Pearl Jam Singer’s Criticism of Harrison Butker Didn’t Affect Concert Schedule

College commencement remarks by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker on the roles of women drew widespread criticism, including from Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder. Social media posts falsely claimed Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs play, then canceled concerts by the band. A team spokesperson said Pearl Jam was “never scheduled to perform” at the venue.

Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, made a series of controversial remarks while delivering the commencement address at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, on May 11.

In his over 20-minute address at the Catholic private college, Butker took swipes at President Joe Biden’s position on abortion, the celebration of PRIDE Month, and “degenerate cultural values in media.”

Butker also offered his views on the roles of women.

Butker, May 11: For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.

Butker received a standing ovation at the end of his address, the Associated Press  reported.  But his remarks were also widely criticized — including by the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, a sponsor of Benedictine College, who said they “do not believe that Harrison Butker’s comments in his 2024 Benedictine College commencement address represent the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts college that our founders envisioned and in which we have been so invested,” The Athletic  reported.

Pearl Jam Singer Kicks Back

Butker’s views on women’s roles came under fire from Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam, during a May 18 concert in Las Vegas, Variety reported. Vedder praised the show’s opening act, Deep Sea Diver, which includes two women. “The singer, Jessica, and the keyboard player, Patti, they must not have believed that ‘diabolical lie’ that women should take pride in taking a back seat to their man,” Vedder said, referring to Butker’s remarks.

“There should be pride in homemaking if you’re a man or a woman … it’s one of the hardest jobs and you should definitely take pride in it, but you’re going to benefit by giving up your dreams?” Vedder said, later adding, “There’s nothing more masculine than a strong man supporting a strong woman.”

Social media posts then fabricated a claim about repercussions to Vedder’s comments.

“After Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder went on an anti-Harrison Butker rant, the front office at Arrowhead Stadium canceled three of the band’s upcoming shows. ‘We stand with Harrison and his admirable moral values. Vedder and his band can find somewhere else to play.[‘] The move will cost the band around $14 million,” read a May 20 Facebook post , referring to the stadium used by the Kansas City Chiefs. The post received more than 150,000 likes.

But the post was concocted by America’s Last Line of Defense, a “satire/parody” website that frequently spreads bogus stories and misinformation, as we’ve previously written. The May 20 Facebook post did not include a label identifying the content as satire.

A Kansas City Chiefs team spokesperson told us in a phone interview on May 23, “I can confirm that Pearl Jam was never scheduled to perform [at Arrowhead Stadium] this year. They were not on our concert slate.”

We reached out to Pearl Jam for comment on the claim, but we didn’t receive a response.

Harrison was initially a trainee with Chatsworth [1] ; the two still sleep next to each other at the Roundhouses and generally perform the same jobs.

Harrison usually takes the daily night shift to Tootington to import goods, but after he broke down during the night, Wilson , Brewster and Koko were assigned to take the load the next evening. Even with Koko becoming immobile due to a power cut, leading to Wilson having to pull her back to the Depot , Brewster was able to get the entire night shift to Tootington on time. [2] Some time after this, he participated in the Chugger Championship race, believing he won, only to see Old Puffer Pete ahead and passing the finish line. [3]

At some later point, Harrison was sent back to the Training Yard after failing horrendously to listen to Puffer Pete's advice, during a test run to see if Harrison was fit for pulling the Royal Carriage . Harrison demonstrated his reckless moves to the trainees, leading Wilson (who idolizes him) to imitate him, nearly causing a derailment. Because of this, Harrison saw the error in his ways and promised to be better, especially around younger chuggers. Later that day, Harrison pulled the Prince of Buffertonia around the Depot for all to see. [4]

Harrison is often known to volunteer in many events, even things that don't end up the way they plan. When no one other than Speedy volunteers to clean the Rocky Ridge Mine , he proposed a Chug of War, with Harrison as the opposing competitor. Harrison led his team to be as strong as possible, but eventually lost due to the loss of energy from practicing all day. [5] Not long after, Harrison was supposed to host the annual Chug Quiz, but due to a malfunction in his voicebox, the role was substituted to Hodge . [6] He also demonstrated the Super-Glide 100 at one of the annual rolling stock shows [7] and recruited to assist Brewster in hauling the Tunnel Boring Machine for the Chuggineers , but broke down before he could even reach the Drop and Load Yard . [8]

During the wintertime, Harrison cleared out the Blue Line with Wilson, but accidentally lost track of him in the snow. They eventually found each other thanks to Wilson's signaling in the tunnel he was trapped in. [9] After that, Harrison was clearing the tracks with Koko before getting himself stuck in a huge snow drift. It took every chugger in Chuggington to pull him out of the cold. [10] When he;s not clearing the tracks, Harrison attends and and dresses up for the Festival of Lights . [11]

Not long after that, Harrison had to prepare for an important passenger test with Hanzo ; after constantly thinking about a good place to end his tour for the test, Harrison realized that it would be interesting to show the passengers what goes on around Chuggington behind the scenes, remembering an important piece of advice given by Mtambo . [12]

Personality

Generally, one could say that Harrison believes himself to be "the cat's whiskers"- even his grill moves as if they were. With a massive ego, Harrison usually only cares about himself and will often act selfishly to save his reputation, even when someone is in trouble. For example, when Harrison running a red light caused Olwin to derail, he did stop to see if she was alright, but kept on speeding without a word- leaving Olwin to having to get her own self back on the tracks. [4] Harrison also rarely thinks about the consequences of his actions, especially with his influence on the trainees, specifically Wilson, that can cause him to lose confidence in himself or attempt ridiculous things; such as Harrison discouraging Wilson about his mirrors [1] or Wilson trying to imitate Harrison doing a wheelie. [4]

It is then Harrison learns just how much his actions not other affects others, but just how much of an influence he is towards the younger chuggers. He learns to be more aware of his surroundings and take in responsibility once he knows he's in the wrong. Even with his ego, Harrison does know when to stop and will try to help chuggers in dire situations, even if he may not learn from them occasionally. For example, when Wilson became lost and subsequently trapped in a tunnel, Harrison did feel worried and immediately went looking for him; thankfully, Action Chugger was able to rescue Wilson. [9] Despite his faults, Harrison's colleagues do care about him and are willing to help him if he is in trouble, even if he may not do the same, as they hope that their generosity might finally make him realize the full error in his ways.

Technical Details

Harrison is based on Union Pacific Railroad's M-10003, M-10004, M-10005 and M-10006 , four identical streamlined 2-car power car diesel-electric train sets that were delivered in May, June, and July 1936 from Pullman-Standard, with prime movers from the Winton Engine Corporation of General Motors and General Electric generators, control equipment and traction motors. However, in the show, Harrison is much shorter in length and doesn't have a booster car.

Harrison is painted periwinkle with silver linings.

Harry Styles fans sign up to guided tours of singer’s hometown – including exact spot where he had first kiss

Harry Styles fans can now sign up for guided tours around the Cheshire village where he grew up, including the site where he had his first kiss and the bakery he once worked at after school.

When the pop singer, 30, first shot to fame with One Direction after competing on reality TV show The X Factor , he described his home town as “quite boring”, albeit “picturesque”.

But in the years since, as he achieved further fame as a solo artist with hits such as “Watermelon Sugar” and “As It Was”, the village has grown accustomed to visits from devoted “Harries” (Harry Styles fans).

The not-for-profit Holmes Chapel Partnership has recruited a group of superfans to lead the tours , which will take place through summer.

Organisers hope the tours will improve safety in the area and avoid the small parish from becoming overwhelmed by foot traffic.

The Holmes Chapel Partnership said that more than 5,000 fans visited the village 2023, close to the population of 6,700.

Tickets for the first round of tours, which cost £20 per head, go on sale today (Thursday 30 May).

One of the main attractions is Mandeville’s bakery, where Styles worked as a teenager after school and on Saturdays. A life-sized cut out of the singer in his uniform is on display for fans who wish to take selfies.

Bakery owner Simon Wakefield told the BBC that he was a “really nice lad, so easy and down-to-earth”.

When Styles won an audition for The X Factor, he apparently asked Wakefield if he could take a shift off: “I said, ‘Yeah no problem, go for it’,” Wakefield said.

“And it just erupted from there. It just goes to show it can happen to anyone, at any time.”

Another hotspot is the 180-year-old Twemlow Viaduct, where Styles had his first kiss and where he wrote his name while filming the 2013 One Direction documentary, This is Us.

Fans wishing to leave their own messages are encouraged to write on slate hearts, which they can buy from a local retailer.

Peter Whiers, chairman of the Holmes Chapel Partnership, said the organisation loved the “enthusiasm people have for Harry” when first announcing plans for the tours.

However, he said it was important to balance fan excitement and curiosity with the reality of a “historic village that dates from the 1400s”.

“So this year we are taking a new route to keeping visitors safe by hosting guided tours to popular Harry locations,” he said.

The tour guides will work in pairs and trained to lead Styles fans in groups of up to 16 people through the walking map. They will run on Saturday mornings from 8 June and on weekdays between July to September.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
