The Kooks (established in 2004) are a British pop-rock foursome from Brighton, UK who boast a very distinct alternative, indie-rock sound.

Arriving on the British indie rock scene in 2006 were vocalist and guitarist Luke Pritchard, lead guitarist and synth player Hugh Harris, drummer Alexis Nunez and bassist Peter Denton (the original bassist was Max Rafferty, who left in 2008 and original drummer Paul Garred was eventually replaced due to a nerve problem in his arm, making him unable to play live).

The four Brighton boys that make up The Kooks joined the likes of the fresh-faced Arctic Monkeys in releasing their debut album in the mid naughties; theirs recorded in Konk studios, London in 2005 and entitled “Inside In/Inside Out.” Although they were a little overshadowed by Arctic Monkey’s simultaneous release and instant success, the album received great critical acclaim and massive chart success in their UK home, eventually securing the number two position in the Albums Chart for two consecutive weeks. The album was also certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and launched their mainstream success, winning them the Best UK and Ireland Act at the 2006 MTV Awards.

Singles from their debut album such as “She Moves in Her Own Way” and “Naïve” broke the top ten in the UK singles chart and achieved success in charts in Europe too. The latter single being covered in Radio One’s Live Lounge sessions by British songstress Lily Allen cemented the band’s wide reaching appeal and demonstrated their strength in song writing skills. With influences like The Rolling Stones, The Strokes and Bob Dylan, this particular skill certainly didn't happen by mistake.

Their second album, “Konk” (named after the studio in which the first and second album were recorded) was released in 2008 and went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold in the UK and Ireland. Single “Always Where I Need to Be” even achieved chart success in the US, reaching number 22 in the Alternative Songs Billboard chart.

In 2009 The Kooks began working on their third studio album (also recorded on label Virgin Records, as with their preceding albums). However, work was slow and after moving between new producers and writing methods to finally work with producer Tony Hoffer again, front man Pritchard announced in January 2011 that they had finally recorded fourteen tracks. Two months later the release date of 12th September 2011 for “Junk of the Heart” was announced and the album released with a more modern sound than before.

The Kooks then released a new single in April 2014 from their album, “Listen” released the following September. With surprise slots at festivals like Glastonbury, this particular year felt a little like a come back for The Kooks with Pritchard stating himself “that kind of fearlessness when you make the first album kind of crept back in.”

Live reviews

The Kooks are fronted by Luke Pritchard and hail from East Sussex. I found it very surprising they were playing a venue as small as Toads Place. This is a group that's headlined festivals in Europe. For some reason, their sound hasn't translated to similar popularity in the US. Never the less though, they still know how to out on a great show.

The Kooks are on a summer tour in support of their 4th album, entitled Listen. I was late to discovering this album, but it is excellent. The group performed 9 tunes from Listen on the evening, which I was very pleased about. This included opener 'Around Town' to start the show. This got the crowd going from the beginning.

Pritchard really got the crowd into it by playing three of their biggest hits consecutively in the middle of the set. 'Always Where I Need to Be,' 'She Moves in Her Own Way,' and 'Junk of the Heart' all seemed to rattle the old building with some great audience participation.

I believe the best song in the Kooks catalogue is the lead single of Listen - 'Bad Habit.' The audience and backing band members belted out the driving background rhythm, while Pritchard danced and smoothly sang the verses. This is just one example of how dance friendly the album is. No one in the crowd could seem to stand still.

The final song of the night was 'Naive,' giving way to a long ovation for an encore, which I believe turned out to be the best part of the night. Luke first sat at the piano to play of slower tune in 'See Me Now.' This is a very raw number, written and sung by Pritchard to his father. After this emotional ballad, the Kooks turned it up one more time for 'Forgive and Forget' to finish. It was an appropriate closer to a great show!

One of the most surprising and probably best shows of the summer here. Just add the Kooks to the already lengthy list of great bands coming over from England. I'll definitely be on the lookout for them again.

The Kooks. Despite the name, they are anything but kooky. A tried and true band, the Kooks don't need me to tell you they are a good band, but screw that I'll tell you anyway. The Kooks are an awesome-to-the-max band. And with their new upcoming album "Listen", things looks surely to continue at a rampant and amazing pace. With magnificently entertaining songs like "See the World", "Shine On", "Rosie", and "Always Where I Need To Be", the Kooks are an ultimate delight to see live. Deeply satisfying each time a chord is played, and always intriguing when switching from electric to acoustic during songs, you can always feel the 'live' part of the live concert. So yeah, you should really think about seeing them live. Seriously, you should.

But of course, the best selling point of the band is it's frontman and lead singer, Luke Pritchard. A real entertaining character, Pritchard is a natural performer, knowing exactly how to please and sell a crowd. With spectacular dance moves and an intriguing stage persona, Pritchard alone was a delight to watch. And this in a way definitely made everything more awesome. These guys are really a band you will want to rock to, even if you listen to them or not. They have that classic rock feel and vibe, with a modern rock sound. Which turns out to be a stellar combination. The Kooks can be described in many ways, but that will never change the fact their music is among the best. Rock on, Kooks, you deserve it.

Alternating between high energy songs with catchy beats to acoustic sing-alongs is the combination that makes The Kooks so enjoyable no matter if it's a small venue or a huge festival. The Kooks will keep you hooping and swaying with every song change. You'll get excited when Luke grabs his acoustic guitar or when he ditches it all for the mic. No matter what, every time you hear his voice screech you'll want to jump up and touch him. Lead singer Luke Pritchard's voice is what ties all three albums together as The Kooks search for the right mixture of soul, hip-hop and rock. And with new singes like "Down", "Around Town" and "Bad Habit". You can hear the evolution from their first album, raw and Acousticy, to the more Beat and soul driven songs of the new upcoming album. These changes are why fans are excited about their upcoming album. I found The Kooks not from their hit song "Naive" like most people did in 2006 but from there great covers of "Gnarls Barkley - Crazy" and even through all the different changes the band has made throughout the years I think that Luke creative ability has made leaps and bounds since the first album and that is why I keep coming back for more.

I had never even heard of The Kooks before I saw them. I saw them sort of by accident. I was at Glastonbury 2007.

The only band I was excited about when the lineup was released was Arctic Monkeys. I did see them, they were great. But this band, the Kooks, they were something else. I was just walking near the Pyramid Stage and the sound of their set drew me in. It was both exuberant and laid back, which is exactly what I was looking for. I danced around and jammed out to all of their tunes and they were so adorable.

There is just something so sweet about a guy singing his heart out with a cardigan and an acoustic guitar. I didn't know any of their songs, so I didn't know which were the hits but my favorite bit was just as the sun was starting to set. They played this song called Oil. The people around me were big fans and were happy to tell me the name of the song after it was over. By the end of the set, they were my new festival friends. We linked arms and swayed along and they told me everything about the Kooks.

I have seen them 4 times since then and every time has been great but nothing has beaten the first time.

There was a great build up and opening for this gig as a huge curtain covered the stage and ‎the band appeared behind it, their silhouettes playing their instruments before the curtain ‎dropped and they opened up Eddie’s Gun. ‎

The Kooks didn’t let their following down and played all their old hits and the atmosphere ‎was electric all night, I felt they really grew into the show and got better as it went on.‎

The encore of “Around Town”, “Shine On” and of course “Naïve” was sensational as the ‎crowd’s anticipation was met. I sometimes think some of the bands such as The Kooks from ‎that era become victims of the success of their debut albums and their new music doesn’t get ‎the credit it deserves especially given the talent and exposure of new music and new bands ‎around.‎

Take a listen to new songs “Be Who You Are” and the brilliant “Broken Vow” (my personal ‎highlight of the gig) and with new tunes and live performances like this they could get back ‎into the indie elite. ‎

The Kooks concert was AMAZING! I've been a fan of them for about 4 years, but it was the first time I've seen them play live. The concert was a perfect mix of their old and new songs and the crowd was insane. Everybody was dancing and screaming the lyrics. It was great to be surrounded by such hardcore, enthusiastic fans, it really made the night rememberable. Their live performance was awesome. No massive fireworks or anything, just an excellent example of their amazing musical talent. Their music is best described as indie rock, and similarities have been made to Arctic Monkeys and The Killers. If interested, I would recommend their songs; Seaside, Taking Pictures Of You, She Moves In Her Own Way or Eskimo Kiss. The Kooks concert was an amazing night, probably the best concert I've ever been to, and I definatly recommend it to everyone and anyone!! The music is awesome, even better live, insane fans, and it doesn't hurt that the lead singer, Luke Pritchard, is pretty hot.

I'm a fan of The Kooks since 2008~2009, when I first heard them I felt so good, and it has been like this since then. I'm from Brazil and they have played there twice, but I it was not possible for me to go to either of the concerts.

Now I'm currently living in Norway and when Songkick notified me about the concert I felt so so happy, for the first time I would be able to see one of my favourite bands (if not THE favourite one)!

And they didn't let me down, it was amazing, it was wonder! Seeing them so close, singing all the songs that have been making part of my life for around 6 years! It couldn't be better! Awesome concert, from an awesome band and amazing guys! I'm proud being your fan ;)

It was way better than I expected!

I was a big fan of The Kooks for their first three albums. To be honest I do not enjoy their latest album so much. So I went there without a big expectation. Turns out they were incredible.

They are such a great performance everybody was having a really great time. The old songs really bring back memories of me playing their songs with my guitar in my room, brought me goosebumps!

I'm sure someday I'll look back to the day I watched The Kooks and smile.

PS. If you're wondering to watch their show or not, just watch it! Well worth it.

I've been wanting to see The Kooks live since 2008. So, I did not even think it was possible for the show to be as amazing as I had built it up in my mind to be. But,it was. It was easily one of the best concerts I've ever been to and I have been to a lot of concerts.

Go see the Kooks play live! if possible try to see them at a smaller venue. They play their new songs and they play songs from all of their old CDs. They ask for a requests and then they play whatever the crowd is wanting them to play. It was an incredible concert.

The Kooks absolutely blew me away last night. They have been my favorite band for years now and seeing them in person was a very moving and memorable experience for me.

With an excellent set list, The Kooks had the audience all mesmerized by their performance and singing along to every beautiful lyric. The songs chosen for the encore were perfectly selected, drawing the crowd into the performance even more before leaving. Overall, the show was 100% mindblowing and thoroughly enjoyed. Easily one of the happiest nights I can recall.

The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines

Celebrating 15 years of The Kooks' Inside In / Inside Out as well as The Vaccines' new album

The Kooks Announce US Tour with The Vaccines

The Kooks have announced that they’ll be coming to the United States for “the first time in a long time” for a 16-stop 2024 tour with The Vaccines .

Kicking off on February 29th with a performance in Atlanta, the tour will will take the two beloved British alt bands to cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, with The Kooks indicating that they’ll play their seminal debut album, Inside In / Inside Out , in its entirety at each stop in celebration of its 15th anniversary. Watch a video of the band’s Luke Pritchard announcing the tour below.

Tickets for the shows go on sale to the general public via Ticketmaster on Friday, October 13th, at 10:00 a.m. local time, following a Live Nation pre-sale which opens on Thursday, October 12th, at 10:00 a.m. local time (use access code VOCALS ). Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Joining The Kooks for the duration of the tour will be The Vaccines, who are currently gearing up to release their sixth studio album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations on January 12th via Thirty Tigers. On Wednesday, October 11th, they shared the album’s latest single, “Sometimes, I Swear,” a cathartic tune that grapples with the deep questions of life, over a soundscape of guitars, of course.

Speaking about the new single, The Vaccines’ lead singer Justin Young said: “Like many songs before it, ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ began life as Tim [Lanham, keyboardist] and I sat on my sofa in London. I don’t think there are many places on the planet where I feel so at peace as sitting in my own home, but even there I constantly question my place in the world. I think the innate human need to be part of something — to connect with each other in a community or a congregation — is what keeps driving us forward and searching for meaning. It’s something many of us struggle with on a daily basis, but I hope when people hear this song they’ll feel less alone in that struggle.” Pre-orders for Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations are ongoing.

The Kooks at Fairview Park: Stage times, set list, ticket information, how to get there and more

Everything you need to know about the band’s concert on wednesday, june 28th.

the kooks tour song list

The Kooks move in their own way. The band recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of their debut album, Inside In/Inside Out, with a tour playing the coveted record top to bottom and some other hits thrown in, too. The record remains, for many, a time capsule of 2006 in all its post-punk and Britpop glory.

Frontman Luke Pritchard said in a statement announcing the tour: “We wanted to play all the songs from the album along with some fan favourites spanning our entire career as a thank you to our fans for all the love that’s kept the album alive, growing and finding new ears since we put it out in the noughties.”

This week they’re back on this side of the pond to perform the show for their Irish fans. So what can we expect from the concert?

When do they play?

The concert is on at Fairview Park, north of Dublin city centre on Wednesday, June 28th.

Gates open at 7pm and the gig starts at 7.30pm. Organisers have said due to increased traffic and security measures, concertgoers should be there in sufficient time. No queuing is allowed prior to the gates opening.

Who are the support acts?

Fresh from their set with Rick Astley at Glastonbury, indie band Blossoms will be warming up the stage for the lads. Indie rock band The Lathums will also be supporting on Wednesday.

How do I get there – and home again?

Organisers have said fans should allow for at least an extra two hours travel time to and from the venue. As traffic and parking delays are inevitable, you are encouraged to walk, cycle, use public transport and private coach services. There are no car parking facilities on site and fans have been advised not to park illegally in surrounding residential areas.

By Dart: The Dart will run services to and from the concert. If you are planning on using the Dart, you can get off at Clontarf Road station. More information can be found at irishrail.ie .

There will be signs on approach to the concert, which will take place at the Annesley Bridge end of Fairview Park. If you have any accessibility queries regarding accessible toilets, dietary or medical requirements, see mcd.ie for details on how to get in touch prior to the event.

the kooks tour song list

Fairview Park summer 2023 site map

What will they play?

When playing a set at Neighbourhood Weekender music festival in the UK last month, the band played the following songs:

  • Always Where I Need to Be
  • See the World
  • Eddie’s Gun
  • You Don’t Love Me
  • She Moves in Her Own Way
  • Jackie Big Tits
  • Do You Wanna
  • Junk of the Heart (Happy)

Are there any tickets left?

Yes. There are still some tickets up for grabs at ticketmaster.ie . Buy tickets from accredited sources only.

What’s the story with security?

The concert is strictly over-16s; bring your passport, Garda age card or driving licence as evidence of your date of birth. Allow time for security checks on the way in. Bags larger than A4 size will not be permitted and all bags may be searched, and this can be time-consuming, so consider going bagless for easier entry. There will be no cloakroom or storage facilities. No umbrellas, alcohol, garden furniture, selfie sticks, flares, glasses or cans, among other items, will be allowed into the event. There are no readmissions to the concert, so once you leave there’s no getting back in.

Can I take photographs at the concert?

Yes, but only with a smartphone or small camera. Professional cameras with a detachable lens and any other recording equipment are banned.

What’s the weather forecast?

Met Éireann is forecasting scattered clouds and a maximum temperature of 20 degrees. While the day might start with some showers in the area, things should clear up for revellers at Fairview.

The British indie rock band from Brighton founded by Luke Pritchard, Hugh Harris, and Paul Garred have achieved international success.

Classy British group The Kooks have been at the forefront of the alt. Britpop scene since 2004. They were signed to Virgin after three months of bidding and why not? Their supremely catchy and melodic music, sharp lyrics (sometimes laced with a touch of The Smiths) and classic two guitar, bass and drums line-up work so well on stage and in the studio that their radio appeal is a given. Debut album Inside In/Inside Out (2006) has so far been certified as a 4xPlatinum disc in the UK with more precious metal coming from Australia and Ireland, strongholds both. Konk (2008) went one better by hitting the top slot in the UK while Junk Of The Heart and the most recent Listen remain steady sellers. Along the way they’ve released some classic singles including earworm tunes “You Don’t Love Me”, “Naïve” (just the 28 million hits on YouTube!), the 2007 Brit Awards nominated “She Moves in Her Own Way” and the epics “Always Where I Need to Be” and “Shine On”. Apart from updating the boy/girl pop motif with a modern twist on a 1960s sensibility, these Kooks have branched out into ska and funky beats and like such kindred spirits as The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys and The Fratellis they’ve improved on the hoof, gathering in a more dynamic sound as they progress.

Singer/guitarist Luke Pritchard, original drummer Paul Garred and lead guitarist Hugh Harris were all alumni at the BRIT school in Croydon, a vocational establishment rather than a fame academy but a hotbed for aspirant wannabe entertainment stars nonetheless. Max Rafferty joined in 2002 as the original bassist. The band name was borrowed from the David Bowie song on Hunky Dory and a shared affection for The Rolling Stones , The Police and Bob Dylan shaped their early songwriting efforts.

The die was cast when they began gigging in Brighton, on the South Coast. They had a look, a developing sound and freshness and enthusiasm that turned heads and melted even the most hard-hearted.

‘World’s Strongest Man’: Gaz Coombes Flexes His Creative Muscles

‘disintegration’: how the cure perfected the art of falling apart.

Virgin agreed they shouldn’t rush their debut and  Inside In/Inside Out  was all the better for the intervening road work that shaped the songs, and they had plenty of those. Following a support tour as guests of The Thrills our Kooky kids recorded at Konk Studios, owned by The Kinks : where else? Given the album’s wealth of single hits this was the starting gift that just kept on giving: “Eddie’s Gun”, “Sofa Song”, “You Don’t Love Me”, “NaĂŻve”, “She Moves in Her Own Way” and “Ooh La” tumbled off the album and onto the airwaves with the attendant crackle of millions of digital downloads. Produced by Tony Hoffer (Supergrass, Grandaddy, Beck , Turin Brakes, Air etc.) the sweetly retro atmosphere of the whole appealed to music fans across the board from the Skins generation to their parents. The opening track “Seaside” is a lovely thing and the rest just rolls out with perfect symmetry. To hear the songs in raw form try the Acoustic edition, recorded live at Abbey Road Studios and in Osaka, Japan. If you haven’t heard any of the above, start discovering.

Konk was another delicious breeze that soared to the top of the charts in late April 2008 and made #10 on the US Alternative Albums (Billboard) chart. Powered by “Always Where I Need to Be”, “Sway” and “Shine On” Konk was/is a must-hear album from that summer. A second disc called RAK also captures the teenage poignancy these Kooks specialise in and gives further indication of their songwriting prowess and prolific output. Meanwhile, Pritchard’s growing confidence as a vocalist is at the core of a disc where guitarist Harris takes his chance to step forward and impress. Rafferty would leave the band during recording and so enter new bass player Peter Denton.

We had to wait until 2011 for  Junk Of The Heart , an album that divided opinion but sounds absolutely fine to us. True, they had grown up a lot by now but then so had their audience and the change of pace was inevitable even though the Kooks style – short, sharp and to the point – is maintained. The title track, subtitled “Happy” and the deep down “Is It Me” are highlights but this is also worth discovering for “Rosie” and “Eskimo Kiss”, also the iTunes bonus track “The Saboteur (The Magic Shop, NYC)”, their lengthiest performance to that date.

Paul Garred was replaced by new drummer Alexis Nunez in 2012 and the reshaped quartet moved their operation to Los Angeles for production purposes and also worked in London with hip-hop man Inflo who brings loops and a more percussive feel to the table as well some funky, jazz and gospel grooves. Compared favourably to early solo Paul McCartney and the hippy cult hero Shuggie Otis, the songs on Listen are stuffed with hooks and tinged with personal sadness on occasion – “See Me Now” being the most obvious example of Pritchard’s burgeoning writing. Elsewhere social commentary, time and place (“Around Town”, “Westside”, “It Was London”) and a deal more experimentation make this a splendid fourth disc. The Deluxe edition adds four extra songs and the music video to “Down”, a slab of pop-soul that brings them up to date without quite kissing off their Noughties origins or ear for a killer melody.

If you want to dig any deeper then you’ll discover hidden elements of turbulence, the Kooks trip hasn’t been one long joyride by any means; a certain resilience and a usually gentle touch remain redeeming qualities in their makeup. Good to have them around. For further delectation try and catch them live this winter and watch them shine on.

The Vaccines Yearn For Belonging In 'Sometimes, I Swear' & Announce US Tour With The Kooks

Their new album will be released on January 12.

pixeltracker

The Vaccines share “Sometimes, I Swear,” the latest single from their forthcoming album Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations, which releases January 12 via Thirty Tigers.

The album’s opening track sets the tone with a gnawing sense of displacement played out over insistent drums and euphoric guitars. The band also announces their return to the US for a coast to coast tour with The Kooks in spring 2024, including stops in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and more.

Local pre-sale begins Thursday, October 12 at 10am local time, with general on-sale Friday, October 13 at 10am local time. See a full list of tour dates below.

“Like many songs before it, ‘Sometimes, I Swear’ began life as Tim and I sat on my sofa in London,” says lead singer Justin Young. “I don’t think there are many places on the planet where I feel so at peace as sitting in my own home, but even there I constantly question my place in the world. I think the innate human need to be part of something - to connect with each other in a community or a congregation - is what keeps driving us forward and searching for meaning. It’s something many of us struggle with on a daily basis, but I hope when people hear this song they’ll feel less alone in that struggle.”

“Sometimes, I Swear” follows the band’s recent single “Heartbreak Kid,” an instant Vaccines classic that Guitar World hailed as “everything you’d want from a Vaccines song: a catchy chorus, infectious melodies, and searing guitar licks that test the band’s indie rock resolve.”

Produced by Andrew Wells (Halsey, Phoebe Bridgers), Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations is the epitome of what The Vaccines do best: 60’s-inspired classicist guitar pop filtered through a new wave lens, with equal parts euphoria and melancholy.

The album drips with fun while also exploring the ways real life lets us down – the title comes from a misremembered lyric in Don McLean’s “American Pie,” evoking the death of innocence and the American Dream. Though Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations is ultimately about reconciling with that loss, it’s also filled with gratitude for the people and places we once loved.

Torchbearers for British guitar music, The Vaccines have released five UK Top 5 albums, including their debut What Did You Expect from the Vaccines?, which is certified platinum and was the country’s best-selling debut album of 2011. The band has forged a fierce live reputation performing on main stages at Glastonbury, Lollapalooza and Coachella, in addition to touring with The Rolling Stones, Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Muse.

They have received widespread critical acclaim, with NME calling them “A band still at their very best and still brimming with ideas, invention and – most importantly – a knack for writing great songs,” and Paste Magazine declaring “Rock bands just don’t come any more inspiring than this these days, and they just keep getting better and better.”

The Kooks on new album ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’: “A youthful, fresh spirit is what we are all about”

Check out new EP ‘Connection – Echo in the Dark Part 1’, as singer Luke Pritchard tells us about their critical rebirth with a new generation, writing love songs for his new wife, trying to write a sci-fi novel and no longer feeling in a dark place

The Kooks have announced their sixth album ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ by sharing new EP ‘Connection –  Echo in the Dark Part 1’. Check out everything below, along with our interview with singer Luke Pritchard.

Work on the album started in Berlin with local producer Tobias Kuhn before the pandemic, and features collaborations with German duo Milky Chance and Swedish EDM musician Neikid. Although the album was finished with Tobias in London, the European flavour was a deliberate response to the continuing problems for British musicians after Brexit.

’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ is the first album The Kooks have made since Luke got married to singer-songwriter Ellie Rose and the couple became parents to son Julian, who is now 10 weeks old. It also contains ‘Sailing On A Dream’, the first song on a Kooks album to be written by the full band of Luke, guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Alexis Nunez.

The release of the ‘Connection’ EP, also featuring the songs ‘Jesse James’ and ‘Modern Days’, comes as The Kooks begin a delayed 15th anniversary tour for their debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out ’, which starts on Monday (January 31) and climaxes with three shows at Brixton Academy on February 17-19. We spoke to Pritchard about what went into the new music, and what’s to come.

Hi Luke. The Kooks’ new song ‘Connection is an upbeat love song – is it about your wife?

Luke Pritchard : “It is, 100 per cent. It’s about the night we met, at (legendary Soho pub) The French House. We drank martinis all night and then Elle beat me at chess. That’s when I fell in love with her. I didn’t expect to fall in love. I’d given up on love a bit, and then there she was. ‘Connection’ is pretty pure. You can try to be too clever when writing a love song, and I just wanted to write a song about falling in love at first sight.”

As well as getting married since The Kooks’ last album ‘Let’s Go Sunshine’ in 2018, you’ve become a favourite among a new generation of students. Why do you think that is?

Recommended.

“’Inside In/Inside Out’ has got a lot of energy. It’s a coming-of-age album with a lot of angst, which is probably why teenagers still discover it. Really, though, I don’t know. Maybe it’s an algorithmic thing. The world is mad like that, but it’s exciting for us. Coming into this album, we wanted to make an album with a youthful, fresh spirit. That’s what The Kooks are all about. We’re comfortable with who we are and we’re having fun with it. We’re not trying to smash up our back catalogue on this album. There are fresh ideas, but this is an album for our fans.”

What’s the thinking behind releasing ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ as three EPs and then compiling them into an album?

“We’re not trying really hard to be Number One. We just felt like a change, and EPs seemed a fun, modern way of doing that: an EP is not too much and not too little. Ironically, this is maybe the most cohesive record we’ve ever made, we’re just releasing it as EPs instead. It’s called ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ as I like the idea of it being a cassette playlist. That’s an idea that came about from the front covers of old sci-fi novels I’d been reading in the pandemic. So it’s a cassette playlist, but one you can play on Spotify too. I feel like ’10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark’ sounds more like a movie title than an album title too.”

Why did you start making the album in Berlin before the pandemic hit?

“I wanted to work in Europe. We’re such a European band and, after Brexit, I wanted this record to have a European connection. Berlin has got a relaxed lifestyle and I just wanted to chill. London and LA can be very hyper, which is exciting, but I’m a family man now. If I wasn’t in the studio, I was hanging out in cafes. If I’d gone to Berlin five or 10 years ago, it would have certainly been messy. Berlin caters for that too.”

How do you feel about the impact of Brexit on British bands in Europe ?

“It’s really sad. When we started, touring was so easy and gave us a fanbase. It’s been done for, in my view, not a lot of reasons and I predict we’ll re-join in five or 10 years, because the situation now is so unfair. We’ve got to be on our toes in British music. We’ve made some of the greatest albums ever, but that can change quite quickly. We’re in danger of musicians not being supported enough in this country. In 10 years, we could look back and think ‘Why don’t we have another huge band?’ It’ll be because the support isn’t there.”

As a family man, are there any songs about your baby son Julian on the album?

“I wrote ‘Beautiful World’ on the morning I found out Elle was pregnant. I was obviously feeling super-positive and wrote this song about how new life is amazing, even when the world is complete chaos. Milky Chance feature on the song, which is great as they’re both dads too.”

Presumably it’s too early for Julian to be showing any signs of inheriting his parents’ musical talents?

“Well, he listened to a lot of Beatles in the womb and he loves female power pop. His favourite song is ‘Coconuts’ by Kim Petras . That’s definitely a breastfeeding anthem. If he tries to rebel, it’ll be seeing me and Elle and going ‘Yeah, that’s great, but I’m going to be a doctor or an accountant.’ There are obviously guitars in the corner of the house, but we won’t thrust what we do upon him. Hopefully, by the time Julian is 18 we’ll have got out of his way. As a dad, you lose a bit of ego and realise it’s all about the next generation now.”

The Kooks, 2022. Credit: Press

Speaking of kids, where did the children’s choir on ‘Cold Heart’ come from?

“The Pauline Quirke Academy – Pauline [of Birds Of A Feather fame] is the actor, who’s started a singing group for kids. They came to our studio and did an amazing job. The song is about a woman who kept dumping me, getting back together with me, dumping me
The ethos of the album is about the inner child and trying to find compassion. ‘Cold Heart’ ends with the inner child – children talking back to you when you’re an adult, trying to figure it all out.”

You sing about your insecurities in ‘Oasis’. Do you feel insecure as a singer?

“Oh yeah. You have to be vulnerable to be a good artist. There was something missing before this album, an inner peace. Before, I was this edgy, angsty, anxious guy. I didn’t want to be interviewed, didn’t want to talk, didn’t want to do anything. Now, it’s about trying to enjoy the moment. I still drink, but before, it was a crazy circus. I’m not saying I’m there, but I’ve been enjoying trying to be at peace with things.”

Although ‘Connection’ is a straight-up love song, the final track ‘Without A Doubt’ is a much darker ballad about “ Wanting to be someone else ”. What inspired it?

“When I met Elle, I was in quite a bad spot. I’d had bad relationships and was looking for answers in all the wrong places. I was successful. On paper, I should have been happy, but I was completely miserable. The line you’ve quoted refers to a time when, yes, I was ready to walk away from everything. Elle sorted me out and I turned my life around. Meditation has been amazing for me – I think it should be taught in schools. It’s why the universe is mad: you turn a corner, walk into a pub and your life changes completely. It’s an acoustic song, but we made it with the EDM producer, Neikid.”

You mentioned your love of sci-fi earlier. Do you have a sci-fi novel in you?

“I keep starting to write one, so I’m going to say yes. I keep coming back to a story about Element 115. It’s an element with a proven potential reality, which can create universes. It’d be a love story, based within the government covering up universes made with Element 115. That’s the hypothesis so far.”

You made an album with Elle as Duo in 2020. Do you have plans for any more music together?

“Who knows, we might make an album for Julian. We’ve got a little studio in Whitstable and sit in nature, writing tunes. It’s very chill. We will do more music, but we probably won’t promote it that heavily. It’s great to work with your partner. But I don’t know if we’d survive touring together, that might be a step too far.”

The Rolling Stones setlist: Here are all the songs on their Hackney Diamonds Tour

the kooks tour song list

It doesn’t matter that both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are 80.

As long as they’re sharing a stage, the Rolling Stones will continue to defy age and energy.

The band’s 16-city stadium sprint – sponsored, appropriately, by AARP – kicked off April 28 at NRG Stadium in Houston and will play through July 17 in Santa Clara, California. In between, the Rolling Stones will visit cities including Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Chicago.

In October, the band released “Hackney Diamonds,” their first new album since 2005. For this complementary tour, Jagger, Richards and Ronnie Wood – along with durable supporting players Chuck Leavell, Darryl Jones, Matt Clifford, Karl Denson, Tim Ries, Steve Jordan (who assumed rhythm duties after the 2021 death of original drummer Charlie Watts ) and background vocalists Bernard Fowler and Chanel Haynes – shined on stage for two hours.

The 18-song set was stuffed with iconic rock anthems including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Start Me Up,” and “Miss You”, along with a smattering of new songs from “Hackney,” including the Grammy-nominated “ Angry .”

Stadiums, which the band has played for nearly 50 years, still suit their blues-splattered rock and indefatigable frontman Jagger, who still slithers effortlessly, remains an undisputed legend.

Latin superstar Luis Miguel thrills El Paso, Juárez fans

the kooks tour song list

Latin superstar Luis Miguel returned to the Don Haskins Center stage Wednesday night, thrilling thousands of loyal borderland fans.

It was the first of two nights of his Luis Miguel Tour 2024 concert in El Paso and part of the tour he extended from Luis Miguel Tour 2023.

He performs at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at the Don Haskins Center. Tickets are still available and starting at $151, plus fees, available at Ticketmaster.com .

The crooner, now in his 50s, has had a massive following in El Paso and Juárez for many years.

Juárez native Alma Villanueva, who lives in El Paso, attended the concert with her daughter Daniela Perea.

"I have been a fan for a long time and then my daughter just followed suit," she said. "We have gone to see him in Las Vegas and we saw him the last time he came to El Paso (in 2018).

She added, "I love all of his songs from "Debajo de la Mesa," to all of the Romances songs. I think he is the best Latin artist."

Luis Miguel in El Paso: Concert highlights from Don Haskins

Luis Miguel, looking dapper as always in a black suit and tie, never said a word to the audience. But he didn't seem to need to. Fans gleefully held their hands high, waving their LED wristbands, which flashed colorful lights and filled the arena like dancing fireflies in the dark.

El Sol de Mexico started the night with "Sera Que No Me Amas" and continued to take fans through decades of his hits, slowing down the tempo with romantic ballads and bringing back up the beat with his pop hits.

Fans joined in at every opportunity, singing to classics such as "Culpable o No," "Amor, Amor, Amor," and "Entregate."

Luis Miguel has always been known for his signature dance moves, from picking up a leg while dancing to sashaying across the stage. He still has those moves that thrill ladies, reminiscent of an Elvis hip thrust, but he no longer pulls on his hair.

The last 20 minutes or so of the 1 1/2-hour concert kicked up a notch when he brought out his mariachi, a robust 14-member group, that backed him as he sang some favorite rancheras, "La Bikina" and "La Media Vuelta."

Fans sang along while giant inflatable balls bounced on fans in the floor seats.

He ended the night with a medley of his earliest hits, including "Cuando Caliente el Sol," and then soaked in the crowd's love as they hollered "otra." He returned the gesture with closed palms and then threw kisses.

He still knows how to leave them wanting more.
