Finding reliable clothing staples to rewear again and again helps us all to become more sustainable travelers—and refrain from overpacking. When building a summer travel capsule wardrobe, versatile and comfortable basics are key: Rather than packing a suitcase full of trendy items or statement outfits you'll only wear once, consider investing in basics you can pair with several outfits and wear from day to night. To lay the foundation, we've put together a list of top summer wardrobe essentials, whether you’re headed to a beach vacation in Mexico or are planning to eat your way through Italy . No matter where your upcoming travel plans take you, these are the pieces you’ll be glad you packed. From crisp white button-downs and packable slip dresses to walking sandals and everyday sneakers , you can count on them to keep your packing list short and your outfit options long.

Below, 13 pieces to build a summer travel capsule wardrobe, with men's and women's styles from brands we love: Everlane , Lulus , Buck Mason , Teva , and more. Keep scrolling to see them all or jump right to your section of choice.

  • The basic tee

The classic button-down

  • The perfect short

The lightweight denim

  • The breathable tank top
  • The midi dress

The exercise dress

  • The white sneaker

The walking sandal

The comfortable heel.

  • The quality bathing suit

The crossbody bag

The basic tee.

Every traveler needs a favorite tee . A basic T-shirt pairs well with almost any pair of shorts, linen pants, jeans, or skirt you pack this summer (sometimes I even throw one underneath a sleeveless dress). For something a little more polished than the fit of a classic cut tee, a seamless bodysuit tucks neatly into every pair of bottoms and looks flattering  on every body type.

Along with a plain white tee, I never travel without a button-down —I wear these with denim, as a cover-up by the pool, or over a slip dress at night if it gets a little chilly. For something ultra lightweight, a linen button-down looks put together and keeps you cool.

The perfect short

Finding a trusted pair of shorts can feel nearly impossible. We chose options that aren’t too short, so you can avoid unwanted chafing while still keeping cool. We turned to a few of our favorite brands, like Buck Mason, Everlane, and Lululemon, to bring you the perfect pair of shorts you'll actually want to wear on a hot day.

summer capsule wardrobe for travel

While not always necessary if you’re traveling to a particularly hot destination, it wouldn’t be a list of essentials without including a pair of tried-and-true denim, like these straight-leg jeans from Madewell and classic Levi’s. These pairs can be worn and washed again and again—they only get better with age.

The linen pant

For something a little more breezy, opt for a pair of linen pants. Whether I'm headed to a barbecue or lunch by the pool, I'm always gravitating toward linen in the warmer months. Lightweight, packable, and chic—it's the ultimate summer pant.

The breathable tank top

Hot summer days mean you’ll need a few basic tanks. Ribbed tank tops are always a smart choice—they're both comfortable and flattering. If you want something that looks a little more put together with a pair shorts or a midi skirt, I wear this seamless bodysuit from Amazon constantly (it’s double-lined and I have it in multiple colors). Nike and activewear brand Vuori make some of our favorite performance tanks for men—they’re available in a variety of colors, too.

The midi dress

One of the most fun items to pack for summer: midi dresses . Staple pieces like this rib tank dress from Buck Mason and Mara Hoffman’s mega-popular wrinkle-resistant popcorn dress are always smart options, but for something with a little more flare, I’m eyeing colorful picks from Lulus and Abercrombie. Whether you’re headed to a dinner party or want to explore a new city in style, these dresses scream summer and are easy to throw on with any pair of sandals.

Ideal for active travelers and especially hot destinations, exercise dresses are supportive enough for hikes and workout classes, while doubling as a chic day-time outfit. I don't always work out on a trip, but when I do a sporty yet feminine exercise dress is the way to go—I'll wear one for a morning walk and still feel put together enough for breakfast at the hotel afterwards. I love that these have built-in shorts underneath so they're just as practical as they are cute.

The white sneaker

When it comes to essential shoes, every traveler needs a crisp pair of white sneakers . It’s always my most-worn shoe on every trip, especially when there’s a walking tour on the itinerary. Some of our favorite comfortable white sneakers come from Veja, Everlane, Allbirds, and Adidas, with men’s and women’s sizes available for all of them.

Summer sandals can be a tricky shoe to purchase: You want a pair that can withstand a good amount of walking without leaving you with blisters, and that still leaves you looking put together. Sandals from Teva fit the bill, with a variety of color options available and some designed specifically for hiking . Our editors also rely on Birkenstocks once the weather turns warm—these classic sandals last for years.

For those summer nights when you need something a little more elevated than your favorite pair of sandals, a comfortable heel is a must-have. Black, ivory, or nude heels match just about any midi dress you toss in your carry-on . The height of these heels is just right—high enough to wear to any destination weddings you're attending, but low enough to actually dance the night away in.

The quality bathing suit

No matter where I’m headed—beach vacation or not—I always pack a bathing suit . You can't go wrong with a supportive one-piece (bonus points if there’s some ruching, like this blue J.Crew suit has). The brand makes comfortable swim trunks for men, too; we also love the beachy board shorts from Fair Harbor.

To carry all of your essentials, you’ll need a versatile bag that transitions well from day to night. The Coach Tabby bag, Cuyana Saddle bag, and Tory Burch Pebbled crossbody are a few great options, whether you’re headed to a museum or are shopping for souvenirs. If you’re planning to be a bit more active, our editors swear by the Lululemon Everywhere belt bag —it has a cult following for a reason.

28 Summer Capsule Wardrobe Staples That Are Just Impossibly Cool

By Talia Abbas

collage of street style and summer wardrobe essentials

Real talk: Warm-weather dressing isn’t always as effortless as throwing on a dress and slippers, but a summer capsule wardrobe can help you stylishly navigate the very hot and humid spaces—and the most refrigerated ones—with ease.

The trick to building out the ideal summer capsule wardrobe is focusing on fabrics and silhouettes. Just as in spring you gravitate towards wardrobe essentials that lend themselves well to layering, for peak temperatures you want breathable, lightweight materials, like linen , cotton, and silk, that move easily and feel good on skin—and don’t trap heat. When it comes to fit, anything loose and flowy usually works. (It’s little surprise that one of the most popular summer fashion trends is relaxed suiting.) And don’t sweat the length: Midi and maxi styles tend to be just as—if not more—comfortable than minis, while tailored shorts (and jorts) read more appropriate than cutoffs in semiformal settings.

Our top picks:

The best part about dressing for the season, though, is all the colorful accessories that come out to play. A great beach bag , a charming woven tote , and stackable summer jewelry —these are small staples that pack a punch with a simple look—and tend to get a ton of wear.

To make the next few weeks as fuss-free as possible (at least when it to comes dressing for the heat), we rounded up all the warm-weather essentials you need for a stylish summer—check them out below.

Precision packing is a true art form. We all know packing for vacation can be stressful. You want to have options for everything on (and off ) your agenda, but you don't want to overpack and overwhelm yourself. Luckily, there's a formula that makes packing a breeze—no matter where you're headed.

Enter the travel capsule wardrobe : your key to balancing practicality with style options to fit your entire itinerary, thanks to versatile pieces that transform seamlessly from outfit to outfit. Of course, how you'll curate this depends on where you're headed and what kind of vacation you're taking, which is where we come in. Ahead, see our guide to building the ideal travel capsule wardrobe for six vacation types , complete with insights from two fashion experts.

Meet the Expert

  • Audree Kate López  is a professional fashion stylist and editor based in New York City.
  • Caroline Maguire is the fashion director at Shopbop.

"It's about choosing the right pieces that are practical yet on-trend/fashionable. I always like to write down my outfits by day to see what I can wear multiple times to save room on packing." — Caroline Maguire, fashion director at Shopbop

On the Road Again

If your road trip finally made it out of the group chat (congrats!), the next step is deciding what outfits you want to wear on your grand adventure. If you've ever spent hours sitting in the car, you know comfort is key, but that doesn't mean style is out of the question. Grab your favorite pair of dad sneakers and pair them with either a matching set or a full-body onesie and oversized jacket ( see a few standout options here )—you'll be enviably cozy while emanating chic athleisure vibes. "I love dressing up, but you will never catch me in tight denim or a restricting top during a road trip," López tells us.

Oceanside Style

Packing for a tropical vacation is slightly easier than a winter getaway, as swimsuits and lightweight dresses take up less space than a puffer coat and snow boots. Still, if you're looking to simplify your packing list, focus on different accessories to change each look. Whether you love a good pair of sunglasses, a bucket hat (we rounded up a few standout options to wear in the sun ), a belt, or jewelry, accessorizing goes a long way.

For a beach getaway, the best travel capsule wardrobe comprises pieces that take you from poolside to dinner with ease. A linen shirt ( check out a few of our favorites here ) doubles as a coverup and looks great tucked into jeans with sandals, while a one-piece bathing suit—a poolside staple—also works as a bodysuit when paired with a miniskirt . "There is no need to pack a ton of extra tops or styling pieces when your swimsuits can be used as a top, bodysuit, undergarments, or layered under a sheer dress," says fashion stylist Audree Kate López.

If you only want to pack one handbag, you can't go wrong with a basket bag to fit all your necessities. "A beach tote can be used during the day at the pool/beach to carry essentials, towels, a book, etc., but can also be used as a carry-on personal item on the plane," López tells us.

Max Elevation

Packing for a mountain getaway may seem daunting, but we have the ultimate outfit formula to stay warm on the slopes and feel chic as you head straight to the lodge for an après-ski hot chocolate. The key to packing for a winter vacation is base layers. "You need to layer up in the mountains, so opt for fleece pullovers and warm hats, plus cute and cozy pieces you can mix and match throughout your stay," says Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire.

For a ski trip or other winter travel, you'll obviously need practical outerwear like a down jacket and snow boots, but don't forget to put thought into your base layers to maximize your style options. A turtleneck bodysuit ( see a few of our favorite bodysuits ) layers well under winter gear, plus you can elevate it for nighttime with chic trousers and a cardigan . As for pants, we love the below moto puffer style by Alo, as it works overtime as both regular cargo pants and a ski option.

Perfect Moment

Take On the City

The key to versatile and stylish packing for a city trip is channeling quiet luxury , proving the trend's staying power yet again. Think Sofia Richie Grainge 's style, including tailored basics and understated accessories. Rather than packing five different bags, choose a style with straps that you can adapt between shoulder and crossbody styles, like the below option from Brandon Blackwood. Pack a comfortable pair of black booties (the lower the heels, the better, since you'll be doing a lot of walking). "Avoid uncomfortable 'trendy' shoes and pack items that you can wear pretty much all day without needing to go back to the hotel and change," López tells us. A good pair of leather boots— like any of these —can go with any look.

Lastly, a city travel capsule wardrobe is best with a good coat and blazer to style with any outfit. Then you'll be able to swap out basics like a white tee, jeans, and a little black dress to create a range of sophisticated ensembles to fit everything on your agenda.

Brandon Blackwood

High Seas Fashion

When you're about to set sail on the trip of a lifetime, what do you pack? While you'll probably be soaking up a lot of sun on a cruise, it's important to remember that after the sun sets, it can get pretty chilly. Thus, a lightweight cardigan (we love these cashmere options ) will be your go-to from day to night when you need an extra layer. Additionally, a lightweight matching set like the one below from Abercrombie is an ideal option for packing light amid changing temps, as you can wear it together or separately to create a whole range of looks. "Pack easy day-to-night styles—things you can lounge in during the day by the pool or on [an] island, and then dress up easily for dinner and a show," Maguire advises.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Reformation

One with Nature

Whether you're an outdoorsy type who loves camping or prefer the glamping experience, you'll want to be prepared to face the elements, and you can absolutely do so in style. A raincoat or windbreaker (ideally a two-in-one jacket) is a necessity, and these days, the market truly has all-weather pieces to fit every taste—the below water-resistant parka from Totême is a sophisticated, versatile option. You'll also need a good pair of sneakers for hiking , and it's a bonus if they're also waterproof.

"I am a glamper myself and love it," Maguire tells us. "You'll need layers for a camping trip. Go for an oversize flannel button-up and your favorite pair of denim —even overalls could be fun here." Look for moisture-wicking items for practicality and layer them with trend-forward pieces like a plaid flannel shacket.

The Ultimate Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Summer Travel Capsule Complete Packing List

One thing I am extremely passionate about is building packing lists to travel more efficiently. If you’re looking to pack light without sacrificing style, a summer travel capsule wardrobe is the perfect solution. I have traveled in a carry-on backpack since my first backpacking trip in 2019 and I want to encourage you to take the leap and start packing lighter. Packing lighter actually takes stress out of your trip when you know exactly what you will wear for any occasion!

Most capsule wardrobe blog posts only show very neutral colored clothes. Personally, I love adding a pop of color to my wardrobe. I believe it is absolutely possible to pack light and still create a capsule wardrobe while adding a few different color options! Of course if neutrals are your thing, then building a capsule wardrobe should be easy.

In this blog post, we’ll share some tips to build a travel capsule wardrobe and a complete packing list. No matter where your next warm weather trip is, you’ll be ready to pack light with this summer travel capsule wardrobe!

What is a travel capsule wardrobe?

Summer travel capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Building a capsule wardrobe makes it easy to pack for a trip, as you only need to bring a few essential pieces that will all match each other!

The best part about building a capsule wardrobe is that you tackle all decision fatigue before you leave for your trip. Have you ever been on vacation and thrown all of your clothes around your hotel room while trying to decide what to wear? That uses both your valuable time and energy that should be better spent while traveling! Instead of deciding what to wear, enjoy an extra poolside cocktail or chapter in a book. Packing light with a travel capsule wardrobe frees up time and space both physically and mentally.

Skyscanner is one of our favorite tools to find cheap flights around the world. Browse your options here!

Tips for choosing your travel capsule wardrobe

Only pack items that you truly love.

Every item in your summer travel capsule wardrobe should be one of your favorite clothing items. Think of packing light for travel like listening to your favorite Spotify playlist – you never want to skip a song! You should look and feel totally confident in every single thing in your bag.

Choose a color palette

A basic color palette will help you narrow down your choices and make it easier to mix and match your clothes. While neutral colors like black, white, brown, gray and navy are the standard choice, feel free to choose a few pops of colors as well! Remember that just because you are trying to efficiently pack for travel, does not mean that your personality should not shine through your capsule wardrobe.

Choose items that match each other

Mixing and matching items is the key to becoming a capsule wardrobe professional. You should be able to turn your few items into multiple outfits by mixing and matching the different pieces of your summer capsule wardrobe! My personal favorite way to choose items that match each other is to pack neutral colored matching sets. These are the best to wear as a set or with any of your other tops/bottoms that you pack!

Choose versatile clothing items

Another huge factor in making the perfect capsule wardrobe is to find clothing items that work for multiple occasions. The best way to find versatile clothes is to look for items that can be dressed up or down. For example, a pair of white linen pants can be dressed up with a nice tank top and sandals for an evening out or dressed down with a t-shirt and sneakers for a morning coffee walk. There are also so many dresses that can be worn for multiple occasions. Keep reading to find some of my favorite versatile pieces to add to your capsule wardrobe!

Sets are my favorite clothing items to incorporate in a capsule wardrobe because you can actually make three outfits with this one outfit! By packing a set, you can wear it as the full set, the bottoms with a different top and the top with different bottoms. Even though all of the color options are not neutral, this Hill House dress is my favorite travel dress. It is so versatile and can be worn to a museum during the day or a formal dinner in the evening. This is a great example of where to add a pop of color to your travel capsule wardrobe because you will not pair this dress with another article of clothing besides potentially an outer-layer. Below are a few other great long or midi dress options to pack!

Lightweight sweater or cardigan: A lightweight sweater is a good option if you’re traveling to a place where it gets cool at night. It is not necessary to choose a beach specific cover-up when planning your summer capsule wardrobe. It is best to choose a versatile dress that works as both a casual dress and also at the pool or beach!

Bags: The most important thing to consider when choosing which bags to pack for your capsule wardrobe is that they are able to be packed flat. They should not take up any additional space in your bag because they can be placed on the bottom of your bag or easily placed on top of your packing cubes! Two bags that I recommended bringing are a basic crossbody belt bag and then a small backpack to carry during a day trip.

Packing Tips for a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use compression packing cubes.

Compression packing cubes are an absolute essential part of packing efficiently. Not only will they allow you more space in your bag, they can also be used to organize your clothes into different categories. These are by far the best packing cubes on the market!

Take pictures of your different outfit combinations.

Take pictures of your capsule wardrobe outfit combinations and create an album in your phone where they are all saved in one place. This saves you time when you are deciding which outfit to wear for an occasion and also ensures that you will not forget any important styling combinations!

Leave any questionable items at home

If you are slightly unsure if a clothing item should make the capsule wardrobe cut, most likely you should leave it at home. If you are unsure about it before you leave, you will definitely be unsure about it while you are traveling! It is ok to leave items at home. Remember that there are shops all over the world with great clothes. You can always add an item to your capsule wardrobe while traveling!

A travel capsule wardrobe is a great way to simplify your packing list, travel lighter and look great while you’re on the go. For some travelers, packing light equates to a vacation of repeated outfits. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be true. By focusing on versatility, you can mix and match items to create countless outfits from just a few items. Keep reading to discover versatile packing at its finest and the importance of a travel capsule wardrobe.

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Written By: Maggie Fogg

As avid travelers, we firmly believe in packing light (as light as possible, in fact). Flying with just a carry-on and packing cubes can save tons of time and energy – and help you side-step some major headaches, including lost baggage and heavy suitcases you have to drag up a flight of stairs.

But when you only have a small suitcase, and as a result – only a few pieces to work with – figuring out what to pack and how to plan outfits can be tricky.

How do you keep your wardrobe incredibly limited without surrendering your style? How do you pack only a few key items, while maintaining versatility in your outfits?

Working from a capsule wardrobe is your best bet. Sticking with basic separates in neutral colors goes a long way for creating a variety of outfits with limited items.

If you are packing for a combination of business and pleasure in the same trip, it becomes all the more important to choose well-made styles that can be dressed up or dressed down with a few accessories.

How do you build a tight wardrobe without adding too many pieces? How do you keep your suitcase lean without choosing only safe, boring and basic options – and steering clear of going too far the other way, packing stylish pieces that you’ll only ever end up wearing once?

Let’s look at a few essential tips…

And don’t worry. A capsule wardrobe doesn’t need to be made of  dull all-black outfits . You can use the guidelines below to create a versatile travel wardrobe featuring a variety of clothing styles ( this  is how to mix and match prints).

Read this to learn how to pack light stylishly  for any destination!

The answer is to follow one simple rule – the rule of 3. This is more than wearing every piece you pack at least 3 times. Pack all items with the intention of wearing each item in a variety of outfits that work in at least three different occasion types.

This could be dressy, professional, and casual. Or it could be sexy, relaxed, and polished. It all depends on your lifestyle and the nature of your trip. When you consider using each piece with this kind of versatility, you’ll be able to build a stylish capsule wardrobe for any trip, and have tens of great outfits on-hand for any occasion.

Choose from one of eight  travel capsule wardrobes to help you plan for your trip!

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1: Necklace | Tank Top | Jeans | Bag | Sandals   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Necklace  |  Shorts | Sandals   OUTFIT 3: Blazer | Necklace | Pouch  | Skirt | Flats

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: One Piece, 3 Ways

Take, for example, a pretty tank top like the wine-colored one shown above. It can be paired with a relaxed skirt and a blazer for a casual business event.

However, just as easily, it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town with a slim pair of jeans and a cool rocker-inspired choker and cross-body bag .

And third, the tank looks just as stylish with a beach babe pair of cut-off denim shorts, boho-inspired travel sandals and a straw hat – on point for a summer musical festival.

Take a look at this post to see how you can make 3 weeks worth of outfits with just eight pieces of clothing!

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1:   Earrings | Bag | Blouse | Sunglasses | Joggers | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Tank | Earrings | Lipstick | Bag | B o o t s OUTFIT 3:   Shirt | Tank | Necklace | Backpack | Shoes

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Guidelines for 3 Uses

Now that you know how to use one piece in three different ways, follow these guidelines to make the most of your outfits.

Be Meticulous With Fit

Stick to flattering, figure-skimming silhouettes. Avoid anything with too tight of a fit, as it won’t appear relaxed or chic. Likewise, avoid anything with a loose fit since it can read as sloppy and unpolished. Don’t be afraid to tailor your clothing, especially when it’s something you absolutely love!

Stick to Classic Styles With a Hint of Trend

Choose fairly neutral colors and simple cuts and patterns for versatility and longevity, but look for unique twists that add visual interest. This could be lace detail, embroidery, funky zippers – anything that expresses your personality.

File Into 3 Occasion Buckets

When you’re shopping for new items or pulling items from your closet to pack, mentally file each item into its occasion bucket. Is it sexy, relaxed, and girly? Or is it business-casual, classic, and refined? Hint: this rule also works really well outside of travel packing for your everyday wardrobe, too.

Don’t Forget to Map Your Outfits

Particularly with separates, make sure you can pair each item with several other items you’ve packed. It doesn’t help you if you can wear a cute embroidered blouse to the museum, a nice dinner, and on the plane but haven’t any bottoms you can pair with the top.

Have Fun With Accessories

Follow the same rule of 3 with accessories, including bags, shoes, jackets, and jewelry. Shop for high-quality, versatile pieces that are fairly classic in design but have a fun flair. For shoes, all you need are three pairs: one for sightseeing, one for a special activity, and a bonus pair.

These are the most cute and comfortable shoes for travel !

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1: Blazer | Dress | Necklace | Crossbody | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Sunglasses | Handbag |  Shoes   OUTFIT 3: Jacket | Earrings | Lipstick | Pouch |  Sandals

For example, this black and white striped dress is modern and airy with a slightly French nod. It can be dressed up for a summer night with bold earrings and a trendy belt. It also pairs well with polished accessories – like a cream blazer and ballet flats – for a cultural outing. Or, pair the dress with white sneakers , a summer hat, and a super-cute canvas tote for a breezy look to wear when visiting a local farmers market.

Ultimately, the accessories help give this dress a different feel for each occasion, but the guidelines above are used for each outfit. Each of the accessories are basic in their feel, but they have a trendy or stylish twist and can be paired with other outfits for other occasions.

Check out our top choices for convertible travel dresses!

With this simple rule, you can streamline your travel packing, change the way you look at your everyday wardrobe, and transform how you shop in the future.

While planned vacations or destination weddings would require special attention and outfit planning, the rest of your summer wardrobe should be as carefree as the season itself. For wearable and, most importantly,  rewearable style, consider preparing a capsule wardrobe this summer. With just a handful of pieces come endless outfit opportunities, and we deemed them essential for the summer season.

12 Style Essentials to Complete Your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobe items should be versatile and classic: After all, the goal is to make getting dressed a breeze and, in this case, to also stay cool from a temperature and style standpoint. The kind of reliable clothing and accessories you won’t mind wearing over and over or paired together, but aren’t totally boring either. Cult buy investments like Prada’s iconic bucket hat or Loewe’s signature basket bags, for example, are perfectly acceptable candidates for an even more stylish capsule wardrobe. Your quintessential summer wardrobe starts with the ten essentials, below.

Seamless Sundresses

For some, the summer capsule wardrobe begins and ends with an easy day dress . It’s hard to refuse a garment that doesn’t cling to the body during hot days, appears very put together, and what’s more, requires only one item of clothing for a complete outfit. You’ll come to find that these sundresses work hard in your wardrobe, wearing just as well for casual outings as they do for more formal occasions.

Every season has its signature shoe type; summer’s, of course, is the sandal . With more options on the market than days you can wear them in the season, the most reliable footwear option for a summer capsule wardrobe is one you’ll happily wear with every item in it. Look for one that’s versatile, comfortable, neutral, or, better yet, all of the above.

Spontaneous summer days call for a bag that can keep up with any kind of plan. Something you can carry from work to drinks or from planes to the poolside, say, a straw basket tote or carryall. Woven raffia or straw bags are a covetable and convenient accessory that’s quintessentially summer.

While a raffia topper can certainly elevate any vacation or beachy look, the extra sun protection one provides is yet another good reason to have one in reach this summer. Consider wearing one just as often for neighborhood walks or park picnics as you would by the pool or on the sand. Look to the runways for inspiration: white dresses and crop tops were paired with colorful bucket hats at Jacquemus, while Adam Lippes paired lampshade toppers with breezy skirt sets and resort-ready separates.

What is a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

Clothes flat lay

So what is a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe? In some ways you could say that all capsule wardrobes whether for travel or not are a minimalist way of buying and wearing clothes.

Any capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several cute mix and match outfits. It basically means that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits. And it is a great way to make sure that you pack light do not overpack for your travels.

A minimalist travel capsule wardrobe takes these a little more extreme and has 10 or less basic wardrobe items that can make multiple different outfits.

Depending on the length of our travels and the destination we also use other packing techniques to create our capsule wardrobes such as:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method).

However this minimalist travel capsule wardrobe aims to have a few key pieces that can be used wherever you are traveling for whatever season and is the perfect base for all your travel capsule wardrobes.

Having said that however if you want to have more seasonal or destination specific minimalist travel capsule wardrobes you may want to check our other more specific travel capsule wardrobes for more specific guidance:

So now you know what a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Red and black clothes flat lay with leather jacket, shoes and jeans

Whenever I am putting together a capsule travel wardrobe I always start with the same principles for narrowing down my selection. The first being:

Select a color palette

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe for travel. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits.

But a color palette does not have to be boring or monochrome in order to create a successful capsule wardrobe.

However for this example of the perfect travel capsule wardrobe for minimalist travelers we have stuck to a relatively muted color palette using neutral colors. That is because we aim to have only c.10 clothing items in this minimalist travel capsule wardrobe. However if you have a signature color or palette you prefer go for it!

Plan out your outfits in advance

Folded Linen Clothes for Travel

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times.

Have machine washable items

Although part of the success to many capsule wardrobe is having fewer but higher quality pieces there is a word of caution to be had when putting together a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe.

We recommend buying items of as high a quality as your budget can afford as you will only be selecting a limited number of clothes. But do check the washing instructions before purchase.

If you are going on a longer trip with a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe you are going to need to do some laundry. It will be easier if you can put items in a washing machine rather than sending them out for dry cleaning constantly.

Avoid lots of patterns

Although I LOVE patterns, and usually have at least one patterned item on my packing lists, I recommend avoid lots of patterns when doing minimalist packing. That is because it is harder to coordinate lots of bold patterns together and can restrict the number of outfits you can take.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic minimalist travel capsule wardrobe. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get heat waves and cold snaps no matter when and where you are traveling and may mean you need to alter some of the pieces on this packing list.

Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe we will look at the essential pieces to include:

Best Pants for Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

Black Pants

No packing list or capsule wardrobe is complete without a pair of black pants in my opinion.

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant which happily come in black as standard (though there are also some great bold colors too).

These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling and including in this minimalist capsule wardrobe.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your luggage and means as a minimalist traveler you may be able to travel with carry on only / hand luggage only.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

A Pair of Jeans

Although a pair of jeans may not be an essential as part of a summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential item for my minimalist travel capsule wardrobe at other times of year.

Although black jeans are super versatile pieces, the fact that you are traveling with a black pant means that you may want a different color.

Personally I prefer to travel with a dark blue pair of jeans as part of this minimalist wardrobe for travel. They are more versatile and hide stains better than light wash jeans. Also you will find in Europe in particular that dark blue are a popular style and more in keeping with more local fashion.

To have a pair of jeans that works in most locations around the world I would personally also go for a style that is more fitted or even a pair of skinny jeans as opposed to ripped or boyfriend style jeans.

I recommend packing your favorite pair of jeans where possible, however if you are looking for the best jeans for travel we don’t think that you can go wrong with the Eddie Bauer Voyager jeans! These jeans have amazing flex that mean they are comfy even on long haul flights, but are also completely machine washable.

Click here to shop the best jeans for travel.

Note : if you are traveling to a warm-weather trip these could be swapped out for a pair of shorts instead.

My final essential bottom has to be a skirt. I recommend trying to stick to a neutral color pallette again. I tend to select something in black, tan or navy.

Although you can go with any skirt style you like, my preferred length when traveling minimalist is a midi length skirt. This is because mini skirts are not allowed at religious sites such as the Vatican, Italian churches and the Sagrada Familia to name but a few.

While a maxi dress or skirt on the other hand can drag on the floor and can become a hazard especially when doing activities such as cycling in Amsterdam .

For this reason we think a midi skirt if the perfect compromise. I personally like these black pleated skirts however tulle skirts are also very popular amongst the digital nomads and travellers today and is great for getting that perfect instagram shot! However this is a personal style choice and you should pack the style you are most comfy in.

Click here to shop best skirts for minimalist travel wardrobes.

Dresses are a hard one to include in a minimalist capsule wardrobe as you will need accessories to style them differently, and they can be quite seasonal.

However one type of dress I love for a capsule wardrobe is the classic little black dress. This is one of those timeless pieces that every woman should have in their wardrobe, for travel or not.

While you can pick any style of little black dress (LBD) that you want, I personal think the most versatile style for a capsule wardrobe has to be the classic wrap dress. I tend to select a midi dress for the same reasons as above.

This can be paired with white sneakers for a daytime look, but can be smarter with some statement jewelry and a pashmina or cardigan etc.

Click here to shop wrap dresses for travel.

Best Tops for a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

So now you know the best pants and dresses to take for your minimalist travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to the best tops to pack for travel.

No capsule wardrobe, no matter the destination or season is complete without a basic tee. Now you could go with a white t-shirt, however these show marks very quickly. For this reason I tend to avoid a plain white tee as part of a capsule travel wardrobe.

Instead opt for something neutral like tan or grey, but if you are looking to put some color in your wardrobe you can add something really bright. And because all of your bottoms are neutral you can really go with any color you like!

You could also pack a black top but I find this personally to be a little to monotone.

Note : you could go with something with a graphic or illustration. Personally I am partial to a band tee. However for Europe you will find that plain t shirts are more in keeping with local styles.

Also you could select a tank top over a tee with a cap sleeve. But as there are places where you have to cover your shoulders i.e. churches and temples I prefer to go with a cap sleeve t shirt.

Click here to shop tees for travel.

Patterned blouse

Although I limit the number of patterned items that I take when putting together a minimalist capsule wardrobe, I like to include a patterned blouse. It is a great way of adding a visual statement to your wardrobe and can be worn for both day and night looks.

White Shirt

Although I don’t tend to pack too many white items in a capsule wardrobe, I think a crisp white button down shirt is a must have statement piece.

Personally I love to have an oversized blouse but this is a personal choice.

Best Layers for your Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Camel cardigan.

For me a camel cardigan is one of those timeless pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe as they are great for year-round capsule wardrobes.

They pair well will denim and black pants and are an elegant top layer for dinners and evenings out.

Click here to shop camel cardigans.

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

But I would also pack some top layers / Jackets. You won’t need all of these but it is best to pick in relation to the weather at your destination.

Best Jackets for a Minimalist Travel wardrobe

As you are traveling in a minimalist way, I recommend packing one of the below. However depending on the destination and type of year of travel / season will depend on which jacket is most appropriate. However here are our favorite jackets for travel.

Leather Jacket

I personally prefer a leather jacket over a denim jacket. That is just because I hate denim on denim and there are always jeans in my capsule wardrobe. However this is just my style.

For the color combinations in this minimalist capsule wardrobe a black leather jacket is most versatile. However if you go for a navy base color then a brown leather jacket would be a great pick.

Click here to shop leather jackets.

Trench Coat

A trench coat is a particularly stylish item that I usually include on my Europe travel capsule wardrobe.

Personally I like to have one that has at least some water resistance.

Shop trench coats here.

Waterproof Coat / Jacket

If you are traveling in the cooler months of late fallthen a heavier jacket or puffer is a good idea for chillier temperatures. In some rare occasion you may need a full coat but this is destination specific.

And dependent on the weather will depend on whether you need something that is water resistant or fully waterproof.

Best Shoes for Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you have the main staple items of our travel capsule wardrobe for minimalists we will turn our attention to the best pair of shoes to pack. I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack . However for my minimalist travel capsule wardrobe I recommend just two pairs of shoes. They are:

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds for vacations that will involve lots of walking. Ecco are another good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However overall the most versatile sneaker for Fall travel has to be plain white sneakers. My current favorite brand is the  Addidas Cloud Foam  as they are just so comfy for walking in and work well worn with dresses, skirts, jeans and more.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing one of the following two items depending on time of year and weather at your destination:

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots or chelsea boots are great for travel in the Winter or shoulder seasons and for destinations that won’t be hot. They look smarter for dinners than sneakers and can also cope with cold and even rainy weather if you pick the right pair.

For the color scheme of this minimalist travel capsule wardrobe I recommend packing a black pair.

Shop ankle boots here.

However if you are going to a warm weather destination, or beach location then sandals should be your choice instead of ankle boots.

Click here to shop comfortable walking sandals.

Note : flip flops really aren’t comfortable shoes for walking in, so I only pack these if I have plenty of room in my case and if I will be spending lots of time on the beach rather than sightseeing in a city.

I like to pick a pair that is good for walking and has arch support for walking too. Brands I love for this are Teva and Birkenstock but you should pick the style and look you are most comfortable with.

What else to Pack for your Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

All of the above are essentials in my minimalist travel wardrobe however the items in this section are nice to haves that can dress up and style outfits differently while not taking up much space in your case.

How much underwear you need to pack as part of your capsule travel wardrobe will depend on how long you are traveling for and what access to laundry facilities you will have. Therefore pack appropriately.

However one item we always include is a flesh colored bra. This will go under any color top and as is an essential in my book.

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect fall capsule wardrobe.

They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

For more information on how to travel with jewelry check out this post.

Crossbody Bag

A  crossbody bag,  the anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in cities such as Rome and Barcelona.

It can add peace of mind for travellers by making you a harder target for pickpockets. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop  crossbody bags here.

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photo.

For Summer I would pack a wide brimmed straw hat for extra sun protection, for the shoulder season a suede type floppy hair is a great idea but for Winter a beanie for added warmth is my go to.

Bathing Suit

Only required if you plan on swimming on your vacation.

Good Deodorant

As the point of a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe is to reuse items to create many different looks it is absolutely essential that you have a good deodorant that works for you. Otherwise you may find yourself short on the top front.

We hope this has helped you put together your own Minimalist Capsule travel wardrobe . But if you have any questions about how to create a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe leave us a comment below and we will do our best to get back to you as soon as we can.

TLDR:  A summer capsule wardrobe features timeless staples that allow you to mix and match to create chic outfits in minutes.

How Many Outfits Does This Capsule Make?

This summer wardrobe features 25 pieces total. But for our calculation, I’ll remove accessories and shoes.

Summer Capsule Wardrobe:

  • Outerwear: 2

Total Pieces: 5 (Tops) + 3 (Skirts) + 5 (Pants) + 3 (Dresses) + 2 (Outerwear) = 18 pieces

Ruffled mini skirt.

Something about a summer midi just exudes effortlessness. I love pairing this summer wardrobe essential with a feminine blouse (preferably cropped) and heeled sandals.

SILK MAXI SKIRT

Embrace the flowy, bohemian vibes of summer with a maxi skirt. If you’re on the petite side like me, opt for a high-waisted style and pair it with a fitted top to create the illusion of longer legs. You’ll thank me later.

LINEN TROUSERS

Ah, linen trousers – my ultimate go-to for achieving that effortlessly chic summer look. Best pairings include a flowy blouse and sandals for a relaxed yet put-together vibe.

WHITE JEANS

White jeans are perfect during the summer months. They give off a fresh and crisp vibe that’s a bit more polished than blue denim. For a casual summer outfit, a monochrome white t-shirt and white jeans look is classic.

Don’t sleep on culottes. This versatile garment is a game-changer when it comes to combining comfort and style. The wide-leg silhouette creates a flowy and relaxed look that’s *chef’s kiss* in the summer.

LINEN SHORTS

When the summer heat is blazing, linen shorts will be your ultimate savior. The lightweight and breathable fabric keeps you feeling fresh and comfortable.

Dresses (3)

Breezy sundress.

Pop on a sundress with sandals and a straw hat for a casual daytime look or dress it up with wedges for a summer date night. As a fan of going sans pants when the sun is blazing, I will sing the praises of the sundress every season.

LINEN DRESS

Capture the unbothered, cool girl look in a linen frock. This style of dress is timeless, making it perfect for those creating minimalist summer outfits. Plus, it’s a great piece to have in a travel capsule wardrobe.

FLORAL PRINT DRESS

Garden party? Brunch date? Whatever’s on your summer agenda, a floral dress is just the thing. The feminine pattern instantly brightens the mood. Sandals and a floppy hat complete the casual summer look

Outerwear (2)

Lightweight cardigan.

A lightweight cardigan is a versatile piece for those cool summer evenings or air-conditioned spaces. Whether I’m throwing one over a sundress or pairing it with white jeans and a t-shirt, a cardigan polishes off a look.

UTILITY JACKET

Calling all summer adventurers. With its structured silhouette and multiple pockets, a utility jacket effortlessly combines fashion and functionality.Yes, you can embrace adventure while staying on trend.

Step into summer with woven espadrilles. Pair them with a flowy sundress or cropped jeans for a laid-back yet chic look that’s perfect for embracing the sunny season.

DAINTY MULES

Lemonade, sunblock, and strappy shoes. What more could you need on a sunny day? These dainty flats exude elegance without compromising comfort.

WHITE SNEAKERS

A crisp white sneaker is the staple that I reach for repeatedly. It may have to do with the fact that they look equally good under sundresses, white jeans, or denim shorts.

STRAPPY SANDALS

A versatile and comfortable pair of sandals makes all the difference as you mix and match pieces for summer weddings and events.

Accessories (3)

Versatile sunglasses.

Sunglasses when it’s sunny out? Revolutionary. This summer capsule wardrobe essential is a no-brainer. Whether you’re lounging by the pool or exploring a new city, pop on shades to protect your eyes and look good while doing it.

This timeless accessory not only provides shade and protection from the sun (hello skincare queens) but also adds a touch of effortless cool to your look. I wear mine on repeat and get lots of compliments.

WOVEN TOTE BAG

How To Build a Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Is your summer 2024 capsule ready to take you through these next months? Read on to make sure.

Summer Capsule Wardrobe Colorful

1. Take Inventory

For a practical and organized summer wardrobe, t ake stock of your current summer clothing.

Pull out the pieces that you love wearing in warmer months. The items you can’t live without will form the base of your summer capsule collection.

2. Clean Out Your Closet

Next, organize your closet by  removing unneeded clothing . Unleash your inner organizing guru and conquer that closet chaos.

Give your closet a thorough cleanout by bidding farewell to those items that no longer fit or suit your style. This way, you create space for a fresh, streamlined summer wardrobe.

3. Pick a  Summer Color Palette

Cohesive closet, here we come. Select a color palette that screams summer or one that you love all year round. My tip-  choose shades that are already prominent in your wardrobe and that play well together.

This way, mixing and matching is simple. Need help picking a color palette? Check out this  guide to capsule wardrobe color palettes  for the essential steps.

4. Fill in the Gaps

It’s time to play fashion detective and identify the missing pieces in your summer lineup.

Depending on where you live and your starting point, you might need to amp up your shorts game, find the perfect sundresses, or snag those breezy tops and lightweight pants that will turn heads wherever you go.

5. Add Layering Pieces

Layers, like a good SPF, are a must-have in summer. Not only will they keep you stylishly covered during breezy evenings but they also allow you to adapt to changing temperatures.

Think breezy cardigans, lightweight jackets, and playful wraps .

6. Choose Accessories

No summer capsule is complete without  adorable accessories . Reach for the obvious essentials like flattering sunglasses and hats that keep your face shielded.

For me, baseball caps are a casual summer capsule essential that get me through many a sunny day . A straw bag, dainty anklet, and a wide-brimmed sunhat are other honorable mentions.

Your Summer Wardrobe Questions

Summer is just around the corner, which means you can finally start dressing how you want as opposed to how to defend yourself against the rain and cold. Warmer weather, more social events and vacations all combine to make this season the most fun when it comes to planning outfits—and if you choose wisely you will be able to fit everything you need for lounging by the pool, wandering around museums and sipping cocktails on a rooftop in just a beach bag. This summer, forget about needing a suitcase as our picks below are all you’ll need to create an elevated travel capsule wardrobe.

We don't like

Featured product.

Why Should I Have a Capsule Wardrobe?

If you are looking for less stress and more fun, then cutting down on the amount of clothing you bring on vacation eliminates a huge amount of hassle. If you are flying there is no need to check in a bag, meaning you save yourself money and buy yourself some time before and after your flight. While everyone else is waiting by the luggage carousel—you get to saunter past and head straight to the hotel. Packing and unpacking takes minutes, leaving you feeling relaxed and in full on holiday mode.

How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

Take the time to do some pre-planning and with a little bit of creativity—putting together a travel capsule wardrobe is well worth the effort. Schedule a couple of hours to go through your closet and see what you already have, do a try on session and then make a list of items you can add to complete your outfits.

Invest in High-Quality Pieces

You want to choose pieces that will see you through not just this summer but many vacations to come. The only way to do that is by avoiding trends and cheap materials. Knowing what suits your shape and what you feel most comfortable is an almost guaranteed way of ensuring you will rewear a piece over and over again.

Consider Versatility

Before investing in an item, think of at least three types of occasions where you could wear it. For example a slip dress can be paired with sandals for the beach, heels at night for dinner or with a white shirt over it for sightseeing. Choose a color palette of your 3 favorite shades so that everything works together and choose a multi-use scarf or sarong to add some vibrant prints. Stick with timeless silhouettes that are unlikely to go out of fashion. Lay out all the different outfit options before you travel and take photos on your phone to save you time deciding when you are finally on vacation.

Pick the Right Fabrics

In addition to selecting the right styles and colors, you want your clothes to be low-maintenance—pieces that need little to no ironing.  Keep an eye out for garments made from lyocell and tencel as they are both eco-conscious and breathable, making them the perfect option for hot weather. Even in Summer, some destinations get chilly at night so including a cashmere sweater will have you covered whatever the temperature. To save space in your bag, wear it on the plane.

Capsule Wardrobe Checklist

With just a few carefully selected pieces and some smart styling you should have enough outfit options for all your holiday activities. We trawled through the spring/summer collections to compile these essential picks to get you started.

Whether you want to spend your days lounging on the beach or strolling through art galleries, you are going to need a mix of both casual and formal clothing. A blazer such as this one from Massimo Dutti ( Oversize Blazer $299 ) is light enough to keep you cool but also smart enough to elevate any outfit. We also love how the cut of this swimsuit from Zara Home ( Swimsuit $70 ) means it can be worn as a bodysuit with either jeans or a skirt. Keep reading to find out what other clothing we’ll be throwing in our travel bag this summer.

Comfort is key when it comes to vacay footwear. Nobody wants to miss out on new experiences because their new sandals are making them wince in pain every step they take. We combed through this season’s offering to land on these gems that will have you looking effortlessly stylish while also supporting you as you wander through the streets eating gelato. These sandals from Castaner ( Prado Sandals $265 ) already have us dreaming of the Mediterranean.

No great outfit is complete without good accessories and they are especially vital when it comes to making capsule dressing work. The right sunglasses and bag choice will take a simple white shirt and shorts outfit from looking basic to elegant in an instant. We fell in love with resort brand Soliel Soliel’s range of pareos and how their selection of prints complete any travel wardrobe with some color.

Frequently asked questions, what is the ideal number of clothes for a capsule wardrobe.

There is no set rule when it comes to the number of pieces for a capsule wardrobe. If you prefer dresses you may be set with just 5 options. On the other hand if you favor separates one pair of shorts, one skirt and one pair of trousers teamed with 5 tops may work better for you while still taking up minimal space.

What is the rule of thumb for a capsule wardrobe?

A good rule of thumb when building a capsule wardrobe is that everything should be able to be worn together. Each top should go with each bottoms and every outfit combo should match with the footwear you are bringing with you.

Plan Your Perfect Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

July 31, 2021.

Get Ready for Your Upcoming Trip with the Perfect Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

We’ve all taken that trip where we show up to our destination, unpack our suitcase, and realize that our brain must have been taking its own vacation while we were packing. Perhaps you went with the last-minute “throw every article of clothing into the suitcase that is remotely cute in our closet” technique. Or, maybe you attempted to create outfits for each day and evening of the trip. That might work well for a one-destination vacation, but I would guess that your suitcase was bursting at the seams. That’s not ideal when you are having to constantly pack, unpack, and transport said suitcase on planes, trains, and automobiles. I have now gone to Europe every year since 2009 (except for 2020) and most of those trips were for multiple months on end. Over time, I have continued to make adjustments to my summer travel capsule wardrobe, and after packing the below pieces for a three-month trip to Europe, I feel confident that these recommendations will serve you well.

This post contains affiliate links. That means I receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking the link at no extra cost to you.

BTW, if you’re looking for a great suitcase for travel, I would recommend the Away Medium or the Delsey Chatelet for hard side luggage, and the TravelPro Maxlite 5 if you prefer soft side. The Away suitcase is the trendiest, the Chatelet is the prettiest, and the Maxlite 5 is by far the most practical.

Make sure to roll each item and use packing cubes to store the pieces you choose to bring on your summer travels. Pack your shoes in travel shoe bags to keep the soles away from your clothing.

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe Items

1. the black brami.

You’ll be sweaty, you’ll be sticky and you’ll be walking 25,000 steps a day. A brami that has built-in-bra support is ideal, but I have struggled to find many that do this. Free People makes bramis with high-quality material though, so you should feel supported throughout the day while sightseeing in any one of these styles. And please share in the comments if you know of a black brami with built-in bra pads!

Check out the three best black bramis from Free People: Watch Out | Tighten Up | Happiness Runs

2. Solid White T-Shirt

It’s the ultimate staple piece. The basic white-tee. And, it’s also a great item to include in your summer travel capsule wardrobe because a t-shirt covers your shoulders from the hot sun and the white goes with everything. Finding the perfect white tee can be a little challenging. You want to find a shirt that isn’t see-through and doesn’t wrinkle easily. I personally have had the best luck with  Topshop t-shirts . I own a regular sized white tee and a white crop tee from Topshop and took both with me on my 3-month Europe trip. Topshop’s material is thick which I really like even if it can be a little heavy in the summer because the shirts aren’t see through, they don’t wrinkle at all, and they don’t get little holes in the bottom of the shirt like my other white Madewell tees do. Inventory might be limited though, unfortunately, since Topshop filed for bankruptcy. Abercrombie has quality white tees and Norstrom, of course, has multiple quality brands of white shirts.

3. Black Jumpsuit

There are pros and cons to wearing jumpsuits or rompers while traveling, but I believe that the pros outway the cons overall. Let’s get the number one con out of the way first. Unless your jumpsuit has snaps in the crotch area (and most don’t), you have to take the whole article of clothing off to go to the bathroom. And, if you are OCD like me and find yourself in a slightly precarious public restroom situation, that might be a problem. Here are the pros. A well-fitting jumpsuit is the easiest thing to slip on and your outfit instantly looks so put together even though there was zero effort involved. A black jumpsuit also transitions perfectly from day to night so if you can’t make it back to your accommodation in time for dinner, you can wear the jumpsuit at the cathedral (with an arm covering) and to the bar later and still look great. I like my black jumpsuit to have adjustable straps and be made of wrinkle-free material like Polyester and Spandex.

Shop Black Jumpsuits at Old Navy | Banana Republic | Nordstrom

4. Skirt and Shirt Set

A matching skirt and shirt set is the perfect way to spice up your travel capsule wardrobe because you can create a whole of host of outfit combinations from it. While most of the other pieces in our wardrobe are basics, you should absolutely look for something trendy and bold. I love the idea of a mustard yellow, emerald green, or rust colored set. And patterns work too! I purchased this awesome mustard colored crop top and maxi skirt with an adorable flower print from Nordstrom Rack . Not only was I able to wear the set together when I wanted a great look for an evening out, but I also wore the skirt with my black and white basic shirts and the crop shirt with my plain black bottoms. Abercrombie has really stepped up their game — I would have never dreamed of going on their website if I hadn’t seen a haul from a fashion vlogger where I fell in love with every item — so I would definitely look to see what sets they have available for the summer season.

Shop Matching Skirt/Shirt Sets on Amazon | Abercrombie | Revolve

5. Soft Pants/Paperbag Style Pants

The holy grail summer outfit item – you will want to wear these pants every single day of your summer trip. It’s not even worth bringing jeans to destinations like the Mediterranean over the summer because you simply just won’t be able to stand the heavy material. But, bring a pair of cropped black pants with some subtle stripes, made in a wrinkle-free material of course, and you will seriously struggle to want to wear anything else. These kind of pants are incredibly comfortable, look stylish, are breathable, and can go with anything if you choose a subtle pattern. I like to buy a style that is high-waisted so I can pair with a brami or crop top or tuck in a shirt that is a regular length.

6. Black Tank Top

I’m not sure how I would get through the summer without my solid black tank from Target. They have changed it up a bit from when I bought my tanks many years ago — mine were made by a different Target brand — but the Universal Thread tanks still have fantastic reviews. They are only $8 and that’s not even the sale price. You will wear this black tank with every single article of clothing you bring on your summer vacation. Old Navy also has classic black tanks for $6 that are much loved.

Shop Black Tank Tops: Target  | Old Navy

7. Blue and White Striped Midi-Dress

You might think that a blue and white striped dress is a fluff piece and shouldn’t necessarily be included in your summer travel capsule wardrobe, but I would beg to differ. Nothing says “I’m spending my summer on the islands of Greece” or “I’m picking lavender in the fields of Provence” more than blue and white. No matter where you go, blue and white stripes are just a vibe. Luckily, you can choose from a huge selection of dresses on Amazon, Nordstrom Rack, or wherever you prefer to shop. I personally prefer midi-style dresses for travel because it can be pretty windy during the summer and I don’t want to have to worry about my dress flying up while sightseeing. You can combat this problem easily with a pair of bike shorts though. And, I don’t like maxi dresses for traveling because I just don’t want it dragging on the ground as I’m hiking up to the Acropolis.

8. White Button Down Shirt

This was an item that I actually did not include in my initial travel capsule wardrobe for summer, and one that I probably needed the most. Two girls that I met during my travels wore one daily and I was straight up envious.

I don’t need to tell you how hot it can get in certain places over the summer. So hot in fact that even if you aren’t at the beach intentionally tanning, the back of your neck and shoulders are bound to turn pink from a sunburn. A white button down shirt prevents your skin from burning due to the harsh rays and is lightweight enough that you can actually wear it somewhat comfortably during the hot summer days. It’s also a perfect coverup if you plan to visit any religious sites and need your shoulders covered. Combine the white button down with the soft pants and you’ll be allowed in every entrance. Plus, you can always tie the shirt around your waist if you decide it’s just too hot to wear at that moment.

9. Black High Waisted Shorts

Like I mentioned above, jeans are a no-go if you are traveling to a true summertime destination. The material is just too thick. And, even if you are visiting a locale where your thighs wouldn’t sweat profusely from jean shorts, would they really be a comfortable option for you? If you have the body type where jean shorts fit you well and don’t ride up, then more power to you. I am envious because jean shorts are a classic! But no matter how hard I try, jean shorts just don’t fit me that well. What does fit me splendidly? Black shorts made of polyester and spandex. Make sure that they are long enough so they won’t ride up or allow for your thighs to burn on hot car/bus leather but short enough so that they still look cute with your outfits.

Shop Black High Waisted Shorts on Madewell | Everlane

10. Swimsuit (1 or 2)

Depending on the nature of your summer travels, you should plan to pack one or two swimsuits. And this is where I differentiate between a trip and a vacation. If you’re taking a trip and spending your time primarily sight-seeing in a big city or meandering small towns in the countryside, then one swimsuit should be plenty. However, if you are visiting an island to vacation, you should pack two or three swimsuits.

I used to be all about the Target swimsuits, but as I get older I’ve realized that they just don’t fit me as well as a swimsuit should. So, I’ve transitioned to purchasing swimsuits from Nordstrom Rack and Saks Off 5th . That way, I get the high quality fabric of a designer swimsuit, without the ridiculous price tag of an item of “clothing” that is literally smaller than the dish towel I use to wash my dishes. If it’s off-season and these stores don’t have great options, Amazon has some great swimsuit brands like CUPSHE available.

Check out the swimsuits at: Nordstrom Rack | Saks Off 5th  | CUPSHE

11. Swimsuit Cover Up/White Dress

You’ll want something to wear heading to and from the beach, so make sure to pack a beach cover up in your summer travel capsule wardrobe. Amazon has a ton of really cute swimsuit cover ups for really affordable prices. Or, if you wanted to pack something that is multi-functional, you could bring a white dress. Wear it as a beach cover up during the day and as a dress in the evening with some camel-colored flat sandals or white tennis shoes. A white dress is definitely a quintessential summer look, just make sure you pack one that is made of a wrinkle-free material.

12. Colored Cropped T-Shirt

Thus far, the only bit of color we’ve added to our summer capsule travel wardrobe is the shirt and skirt set. And that makes sense because ultimately, the goal of the capsule is to mix and match items as much as possible. But, I think it’s prudent to add another pop of color that can be worn with both the high-waisted black shorts and black and white striped capri pants.

Shop Colored Crop Tees at Gap | Amazon  | Free People

13. Raincoat (Optional)

If you are heading to a location that tends to rain or thunderstorm in the summertime, you should pack a lightweight raincoat that rolls up nicely in your packing cubes. I got my rain jacket from Target a few years ago, and it’s thin, but lined and has large pockets for any items that need to be stored if it abruptly starts to rain.

Shop Raincoats on Amazon

14. Bold-Colored Skirt/Dress for Photos (Optional)

If you want to take a lot of professional-style travel photos during your summer travels, you might want to consider packing a bold-colored skirt or dress. The bold-color makes the image pop and a skirt or a dress looks so much better than shorts or pants do in a photo. I’m pretty low maintenance so I wish this wasn’t the case because it does seem a bit ridiculous to pack an additional item specifically for photos, but I do recommend this Amazon skirt if you plan to shoot some professional photos.

Choose a flowy skirt from Amazon: Kate Kasin |  v28 Store  | Chicwish Chiffon

Socks, Underwear, and Bras

Bring a week’s worth of socks and underwear and the necessary bras. Don’t underestimate the number of socks! Your feet will sweat walking all those daily steps and you’ll want to change into a clean pair as much as you possibly can. If you plan on traveling for longer than a week, make sure to book an accommodation like an Airbnb where you can do laundry to wash these items. Pack a few detergent strips in a ziplock to prevent any messes! Or, you can bring some travel-sized Tide packets and wash in the sink. You could also take your clothes to the local laundromat, but I personally advise against because you’ll spend your day or night there instead of out exploring.

Travel Shoes

You’ll want to pack around four pairs of shoes. These include a pair of white tennis shoes, a pair of camel-colored flat sandals (Sam Edelman shoes are my favorite), a pair of running/walking shoes like the Nike Flex Runs, and a pair of flip flops which also work as shower shoes if needed. I personally would not bring any heels. If I am trying to keep my packing to a minimum by creating a travel capsule wardrobe, heels are more suited for a single-destination vacation.

There are foldable travel sun hats that you can pack in your luggage along with your summer travel outfits. I own the Lanzom Panama Roll Up Hat with adjustable strap and I am absolutely in love with it.

My go-to travel purse is the Travelon Anti-theft backpack . It’s not the most stylish option, but it certainly gives me piece of mind that I won’t be pickpocketed and doesn’t exacerbate my lower back pain as much as a crossbody.

I’ve also written up a full list of travel accessories for Europe that might be helpful to you when deciding what accessories to bring on your upcoming travels.

In the fashion multiverse of constant newness, nothing feels quite as relevant as a well-curated capsule wardrobe composed of timeless staples. Think jeans, a white T-shirt, a blazer, a versatile dress, and a cashmere sweater; these are items that will serve you for years and can streamline the daily process of getting dressed. And while you're traveling, it’s important to add efficiencies wherever possible so you spend less time worrying about your clothes and more time enjoying the destination.

The key is to invest in high-quality pieces that will last you for years to come. Think tote bags, blazers, and other fundamentals – invest slightly more now and reap the dividends over the years, all while minimizing valuable time spent wondering what to wear.

Having a capsule wardrobe doesn’t necessarily mean wearing the same basic uniform on repeat – pieces you love can be styled creatively with different shoes, accessories, and colors tailored to suit different occasions. You can remix the same LBD (little black dress) from day to night simply by adding heels and an evening clutch. Once you have the foundations in place, defining your style becomes a simple process.

Ahead, see our top picks for building a capsule wardrobe for travel along with expert tips and the best brands to shop, from accessible options like Everlane and Quince, to more contemporary brands such as Vince and Theory.

Invest in high-quality pieces

Like a beloved Chanel bag that is passed down through generations (or sold for a premium at a vintage boutique), it is worth investing in high-quality staples that will stand the test of time. The better the quality, the more durable and refined the item is likely to be. We suggest looking for quality materials and construction, and if it’s not a brand you trust, check reviews online. Plus, buying one hero piece per category is a sustainable, space-saving option (and we certainly need that when we’re traveling with limited suitcase space!).

Prioritize versatility

The whole concept of a capsule wardrobe is based on versatile, well-made staples, and that generally means neutral colorways and classic silhouettes. You can never go wrong with black, white, or neutral shades that can adapt to suit any ensemble and simple shapes that transcend trendiness. Nicole Wiesmann, Vice President of Design for Banana Republic, advises to “always keep it versatile with a few statement pieces.” Another excellent tip? Planning ahead. “I try on all my outfits before I pack to ensure I am bringing complete outfits, and I encourage my husband to do the same,” she says.

Choose the right fabrics

When building a capsule wardrobe for travel, look for fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant so you don’t need to worry about ironing or steaming your garments on arrival. Lyocell and Tencel are some of the best options. Also, cashmere and denim are great to pack since they rarely crease. It also depends on the climate. “When traveling, I check the weather five days before I leave and continue to check until the day I depart for the trip,” explains Wiesmann. “Weather may force you to change choices,” she adds. “If I see a summer week is turning to rain, I grab a trench for my carry on. For warmer or humid weather, I’ll grab linen pieces. I always pack a seasonless wardrobe with seasonal pieces layered in.”

While your capsule wardrobe for everyday should contain the aforementioned essentials, it will look slightly different for an island holiday in a destination like St. Barth’s, where you’ll need to factor in swimsuits and coverups, or for a ski destination where you’ll need insulating layers and jackets. Seasonality is, of course, a vital factor when packing a capsule wardrobe for travel, but the below clothing categories are relevant for various destinations.

Best T-shirt

Amour vert paris rib tee.

The beauty of this white T-shirt is the stretchy, ribbed fabric that doesn’t crease, making it the perfect addition to your travel capsule wardrobe. It has a slim fit, with an elegant wide hem around the crewneck collar, and the hem hits at the hip. It’s as fitted as a bodysuit, so it tucks into pants and skirts easily and serves as a great layering piece to have in your arsenal.

L’AGENCE Marguerite Jean

L’Agence has some of the most comfortable and flattering jeans on the market, available in multiple shades, shapes, and textures. These are perfect for travel since they have the brand’s durable “super stretch” denim that is comfortable enough to wear on planes, trains, and long car rides, while maintaining their structure.

Best Blazer

Cuyana relaxed blazer.

Everyone needs a classic black blazer in their wardrobe and this iteration from Cuyana is one of the best on the market, with a flattering, versatile cut, and excellent composition. It’s a trans-seasonal piece, made from a luxurious blend of virgin wool, viscose, and elastane, and it can be worn open over jeans and a tee, or done up as a double-breasted blazer with the accompanying sash belt.

Best Cashmere Sweater

Minnie rose cashmere shrunken crew.

Minnie Rose

We love the fit of this cashmere sweater, which is slim enough to comfortably layer under jackets and coats yet relaxed enough to wear without feeling too constricted. It has a slight crop, so it’s perfect for wearing with pants as is (no need to tuck) and it’s available in 14 colors from soft pastels to classic navy and black.

Theory Ballerina Neckline Mini Dress in Good Linen

This LBD could work just as well paired with fresh white sneakers for a concert or a night out as it would accessorized with heels and a chic mini bag. It’s made from the brand’s revered good linen fabric, which has a decent amount of stretch and breathability, perfect for warmer climates. The ballerina-style neckline is flattering on the decolletage, and it has a slight fit and flare style with a mid-thigh hem.

Best Swimsuit

Zimmermann one-piece.

Whether you’re going to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or the Hamptons, one thing you’ll definitely need is a stylish swimsuit. This classic Zimmermann one piece has a shapewear-like effect, accentuating the bust with a sculpted bodice and cinching in the waist. It’s a style that can also double as a top paired with denim shorts or linen pants. The Australian-born brand also has a gorgeous collection of beach dresses and coverups that are perfect for resort destinations.

Best Wool Coat

Vince classic straight coat.

A high-quality wool coat is a wardrobe staple you’re likely to wear on repeat during the cooler months, and this tailored, timeless Vince coat is something that could live in your wardrobe for decades. Although it comes at a higher price point, it’s a piece that is made to last, with an insulating wool blend and sturdy construction that is sure to withstand the elements of urban life in the winter.

Each season brings new shoe trends, but certain styles will always be relevant: classic ankle boots, strappy sandals, sleek pumps, and fresh white sneakers. When packing, keep in mind that shoes generally have the most weight and bulk out of any item, so opt for pairs that are lighter and easier to fit in your suitcase (i.e., leave the platforms at home).

Best Sneakers

Koio capri sneakers.

Fresh white sneakers are always in style and are useful for any season, paired with a flowy dress in the summer, or with jeans and a coat in the winter. This leather style from Koio is as clean as they come, with no visible logos or colors – just a classic style in plain white which pairs well with everything.

M.Gemi The Cristina

M.Gemi’s Cinzia Due was recently named the best dress shoe of 2023 , and the same classic aesthetics with quality features can be found throughout the collection. The Italian brand’s most popular leather boot style, The Cristina, is as elegant as it is comfortable for strolling around cities all day. It’s flattering on the ankle with a secure fit, and it has a 2.2-inch heel that adds a bit of elevation.

Best Sandals

M.m. la fleur slide.

M.M. La Fleur

These buttery soft leather sandals become more comfortable with wear. They have a classic silhouette with a slight cap heel, a wide leather strap, and a square toe. These are perfect for wearing with maxi dresses at resorts where you need something that isn’t too tall, and they also look great paired with capri pants or even jeans.

Scarosso Patent Pump

A classic pointed-toe pump will never go out of style, and these will look just as good paired with dresses for a night out as they do with denim or a suit. We love these sleek stiletto pumps from Scarosso, made in a glossy patent leather with a 3.3-inch heel.

Accessories can add a touch of flair to any outfit. A simple linen dress for a day in Lake Como? Channel the dolce vita vibe with a silk scarf. A classic swimsuit and coverup? A wide brim hat will complete the look. And, for everyday, a good pair of sunglasses is essential, ideally in a black acetate. Another must-have is a well-made leather handbag to hold all your daily essentials.

Best Sunglasses

Celine oval sunglasses.

Nineties-style oval sunglasses continue to be the biggest trend in the eyewear world, and this classic style from Celine is one of the best versions available, with a medium size that suits most face shapes and the brand’s iconic logo embossed in gold along the arms.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Scarf

A simple scarf in a neutral color is a great thing to pack for cooler destinations, and we love this luxuriously soft Mongolian cashmere version from Quince, available in seven different colors.

Sarah Bray Poppy Sun Hat with Natural Grosgrain Ribbon

This elegant Sarah Bray hat at Aerin instantly elevates any summer outfit and maintains its shape while traveling. It has an interior elasticated band, so you can adjust the fit to suit your needs, and it makes any simple dress or coordinating set look resort-ready. We love the wide brim and thick grosgrain ribbon.

Best Handbag

Louis vuitton capucines mini.

Louis Vuitton

Let’s caveat this by acknowledging that, like any designer item, it is an investment, but if you are looking for a forever handbag that is sure to polish any outfit, this Louis Vuitton style is an excellent option. The top-handle style is in fashion right now, but it’s also timeless, and the leather is of the highest quality, sure to serve you well for decades to come.

Best Brands for Building a Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

Using only the finest materials and tailoring techniques, Vince is a go-to destination for building a capsule wardrobe. It has elegant essentials for both men and women, like classic Oxford shirts , cigarette pants , structured blazers , and silky slip dresses . It also has buttery-soft leather bags and a high-quality shoe collection including loafers, fresh white sneakers, sandals, and heels. Another draw is that it is available in an extended size range, going up to 3X.

Renowned for its sustainable basics, Everlane is always a reliable retailer for seasonal separates. In the summer, you’ll find a variety of dresses , blouses , shorts, and skirts available in a range of neutral color options, and in the winter, there are cashmere sweaters, wool coats, and parkas. There are also shoes, bags, hats and leather goods in wearable, versatile styles.

For affordable men’s , women’s, and children’s essentials look no further than Quince. We ranked it as one of the best linen brands for its extensive range of coordinating linen sets, flowy dresses , and classic pants. But it also has a stylish edit of cashmere and leather staples that are incredibly good value.

Bite Studios

For wardrobe staples that infuse the latest fashion trends in a wearable way, look no further than Scandinavian brand, Bite Studios. Everything is made from organic, low-impact materials with exceptional tailoring. Some of our top selects include the sleeveless turtleneck , the signature tee , and the pure wide leg denim.

Reformation

Whether you’re looking for a coordinating linen set or a bombshell dress for an occasion , Reformation has a wide variety of stylish staples at a reasonable price point. We love the mini bags , the mesh Wesley flats , and the best-selling Jessi linen dress .

There are different variations, but generally this rule refers to packing five tops, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes (that includes dress shoes , if you'll need them), two bags, and one of each of a few destination-specific items (e.g. a swimsuit for somewhere warm or a scarf for somewhere cooler). The idea is that you’re not aimlessly loading your closet into a suitcase — you’re packing versatile pieces that pair well together that can be worn for different situations throughout your trip.

It all depends on the individual garment – check the specific instructions written on the label, and if there are none, look up what the care recommendations are for particular fabrics online. Many will be dry clean only, some hand wash cold, and some can easily be tossed in the washer and dryer (like cotton or denim).

With so much luggage getting lost at airports lately, I personally always take enough to survive on in a carry-on (and I'm particularly partial to Tumi’s 4-wheeled carry-on). But for checked luggage, it's best to keep shoes separate from clothing, and put a plastic bag or garment bag around anything you don’t want to get damaged (in case your toiletry bag leaks or you encounter any other spill-related situations). The queen of organization, Marie Kondo, has an excellent method of maximizing space with her famous KonMari fold (a rolling technique that also minimizes creasing) and advises using packing cubes.

Be Super Stylish This Summer With This Gorgeous Capsule Wardrobe!

Summer capsule wardrobe.

IF you are a newsletter subscriber , you know that we have EPIC capsule wardrobe graphics seasonally. These handouts that you can download and print, are so helpful visually when it comes to putting together the perfect capsule wardrobe where everything works seamlessly together. We recently decided to update this Summer Capsule Wardrobe in case you still need some of your basics. All of these pieces are in stock at the time of updating to offer you updated options.

For those of you who don’t know what a capsule wardrobe is…it’s basically a collection of essential items that flawlessly integrate together. That means that you can mix and match and wear all of these pieces in a bunch of different ways. There are a couple of keys to getting your capsule wardrobe right:

How To Build A Summer Capsule Wardrobe

1) pick a color story :.

In this case (below) I chose neutrals like black, white, ivory, beige, and tan. Then I threw in a few fun pink pieces. These colors work well for women of all ages and are very versatile. If you remember the Spring Capsule Wardrobe from a few months ago, I shared even more neutral and pink pieces. If you shopped that capsule wardrobe, all of these new pieces will work well with those too!

2) Choose Basics Wisely :

There’s a reason this graphic takes me 10+ hours to put together… I choose each piece very carefully, weighing fit and versatility as well as quality. You want to spend the majority of your wardrobe budget on basics. 80% on basics. 20% on trends. You can find more really helpful style tips here . Additionally, I’m thinking about sleeves, hemlines, and all of the things that help us ladies over 40 feel more confident.

Shop Our Summer and Spring Capsule Wardrobe

I tried to include pieces that are versatile so that you can wear them over and over again. This wardrobe is for summer, but it could easily transition to fall and beyond! Another thing I want to point out is that you do NOT have to buy new pieces every season. This capsule wardrobe is a springboard for you to create outfits and glean inspiration. You probably already have some similar items in your closet! But, if you’re interested in sprucing up a few of the basics, you can find all of the links to these items below!

By the way, we’ll have a very exciting, SPECIAL capsule coming next week so make sure you subscribe to the newsletter to get early access! 😉

Summer Capsule Wardrobe Essentials

Tops & sweaters.

I own most of these tops or tops from all of these brands and they all run true to size. The white v-neck Free People top is perfect for dressing up or down and is only $108! The white Rails button-down is my go-to for spring and summer. I have it in my regular size to wear normally and in one size up to wear as a coverup (perfect for travel!). Grab the gorgeous pink printed blouse if you’re looking to add a little fun to your wardrobe this summer!

Dresses & Bottoms

I linked my new favorite Agolde denim shorts that run TTS, but we always recommend sizing up one size in shorts for a little extra room and length. When it comes to dresses, think about your personal summer style and what works best in your wardrobe. Your dresses for summer could include maxi, midi, or mini dresses, a shirt dress, a tank dress, a floral dress, or whatever calls to you…just make sure it works seamlessly with the rest of your summer capsule so that you build a summer wardrobe that’s cohesive.

If you have a wedding to go to or just want to add a gorgeous dress to your wardrobe, I love the pink Alexis dress with the cinched buckle waist details…it’s SO flattering and can be dressed up or down. It runs TTS.

If you live in a hot climate, you only really need one lightweight jacket for those cold buildings with the AC pumping. I’d  highly  recommend this Cinq a Sept white blazer (I have it in three colors)! If it’s sold out in your size, you can find more here . The trench isn’t something you’ll use for summer but would definitely transition to fall, winter, and spring. The newest addition to my wardrobe is the super cool cargo jacket by Veronica Beard …it’s like you get two jackets in one because the bottom actually zips off to create a cropped jacket. I’ve worn it both ways and love it!

Accessories & Jewelry

I choose everyday, but impactful gold jewelry that elevates a look without overpowering it.

Elan is one of my favorite brands for affordable swim cover-ups and this one is such a good basic. Find more of my favorite coverups here and the BEST swimsuits over 40 here .

These are ALL neutral-toned, comfortable shoes and fit true to size. Remember to consider your lifestyle and preferences…I love wearing heeled sandals, but I know many of you prefer flats. All choices are completely up to you!

I love all the pieces in the capsule wardrobe, but I never know how to build an outfit that makes me look as polished and pulled together as Erin does. Is it possible to create boards of individual outfits (using the pieces shown here), in addition to the seasonal capsule wardrobe? It would be most helpful! If not for the spring/summer, perhaps for the fall?

Thanks for reaching out! We did create an amazing Lookbook, where we take the spring capsule pieces and create several outfits to take all the guesswork out of ways to style each piece. Hi Kathryn! We’re putting a few suggestions below. We haven’t personally tried these, but Erin loves the first two brands for their high-quality, stylish pieces. How csn I shop the capsule wardrobe?

You can shop all of the items in this post just below the graphic. They’re linked under their respective categories (Tops & Sweaters, Dresses & Bottoms, etc.). Please let us know if you have any other questions! Thanks for stopping by, Sue! ~Team Busbee xo

What is the link to the paper clip pearl earrings? TY!

So sorry about that, Rachel! Just updated the post so they should be linked. But here’s the link to those earrings: https://rstyle.me/+Wwn2xVLrpWGdjH-2Nk2wmg Thanks so much! ~Team Busbee

I appreciate all the time and effort you put into this capsule wardrobe. However, some of us, including myself, are in a financial category that would never allow for these prices. I was very disappointed to click on the links and discover many items cost 100+ and even 1000+. Maybe sometime you could find similar links where the majority of the items are below $50. I know that may sound unreasonable, but that’s where many of us are. Again, I do appreciate your time, because at the very least it gives us examples to search for within our own budgets.

Thanks so much for the feedback, Shannon! We’ll work on featuring more affordable pieces in the future. Is there anything specific on the capsule wardrobe you’d like us to find you a more affordable option for? We’d love to help! Thanks again for the support! ~Team Busbee xo

Thank you for “making” me buy a straw hat for summer! I thought it would make me too hot…however, not only do I look cool, but I feel cooler when I’m wearing the straw hat!

I couldn’t get the one you featured bc it was sold out…but I got another one Nordstrom offered as an alternative…do you still get credit for that…or do I have to purchase the exact one that you linked on you Tube?

Thank you SO much for thinking of me. If you accessed Nordstrom through our links we do get credit, but more importantly… I’m thrilled you love your hat! Such a great summer accessory. So happy you wrote to tell me. Have an amazing end of your summer. xo

I got the Steve Madden sandals last week after seeing them here. I absolutely love them. They are not something I would usually pick up. I stepped outside of my comfort zone. Thanks for suggesting them.

I am SO glad you love them! Erin xo

The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

Steve Jobs wore his trademark black turtleneck. Former President Obama keeps his wardrobe simple to avoid decision fatigue . Forbes even made a list of celebrities who always dress the same . What can we learn from the idiosyncrasies of the rich and famous?

We can learn to keep our wardrobes simple, especially when traveling.

Building a core wardrobe of matching basics will help you pare down your packing list and travel with just a carry on backpack , saving time and money.

Plus, since your clothing is meant to mix and match, a capsule wardrobe makes figuring out what you want to wear that much easier—you can recombine any pieces you like into a fresh outfit.

In this article, we’ll show you how to build a capsule wardrobe that will fit in your carry on and keep you looking sharp wherever you go. Then we’ll look at example packing lists for different types of trips and travelers . Finally, we’ll dig into specific product recommendations that deserve a spot in your bag.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

What Is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of basic, functional clothing that won’t go out of style . Each item should be multi-purpose and compatible with the rest of the wardrobe. Think versatile staples , not this season’s must haves .

An ideal travel capsule wardrobe will also consist of a small number of quality items that can withstand the rigors of life on the go. You shouldn’t need to replace everything on your next trip.

Finally, you should genuinely like every item in your capsule wardrobe. Remember, simple and functional don’t have to mean ugly. You want to feel good about reaching for these pieces again and again.

Woman wearing the Outbreaker Travel Backpack

Choose the Right Bag

A capsule wardrobe won’t go far without the right bag to pack it in. Choose a travel backpack that’s carry-on-sized like the Outbreaker Backpack . The Outbreaker fits a week’s worth of clothes, making it ideal for traveling with a capsule wardrobe.

Your travel capsule wardrobe should follow the principles of packing light .

Pack for One Week

You don’t have to replace your entire closet. Your packing list should include enough items for one week’s worth of outfits. When you travel for longer than a week, do laundry.

Pack Layers, Not Bulk

A few thin layers are more versatile than one heavy layer. Light pieces are also smaller to pack, making them perfect for carry-on traveling.

Choose the Right Fabrics

To avoid breaking out the iron in every place you stay, opt for clothing that’s naturally wrinkle-free .

Merino wool is good at repelling odors and regulating temperature, while synthetic performance fabrics are good at wicking sweat. Avoid 100% cotton, which is quick to smell and slow to dry.

Aim for clothes that are easy to maintain. Vacation is too short to waste on trips to the dry cleaner.

Invest in Quality Materials and Craftsmanship

A high-quality t-shirt can immediately elevate your outfit. You also don’t want ripped seams and lost buttons on the road, so don’t cheap out on the basics. Opt for well-made items that you can count on for many trips to come.

Avoid fast fashion, which won’t hold up in a capsule wardrobe.

Simplify Your Color Palette

Keep your capsule wardrobe within a matching (and ideally neutral) color palette, so you don’t have to decide which clothes to wear together. Leave bright hues and wild patterns as accent pieces or for the rest of your closet at home.

Pick Timeless Cuts

Remember, a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. Go for timeless silhouettes that make you feel comfortable and confident, and don’t waste energy worrying about the latest trends.

Consider Tailoring

Proper fit can make all the difference between looking sloppy and looking chic. Hem pants, shorten sleeves, and take in waistbands to add polish to even the most basic outfits.

You’ll be getting a lot of use out of these pieces, so a trip to the tailor is worth the cost.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Checklists

Our basic capsule wardrobe packing list will work for most kinds of trips. We’ve based this list off of our ultimate carry on packing list , which is designed to last a week in a carry on . You can mix and match items and lists to build one that makes the most sense for you and your travels.

We’ve also included additional packing lists for business travelers , outdoor adventurers, and those heading to extreme climates below.

Women’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts or tank tops
  • 2 blouses for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 light jacket or fleece
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 2-3 bras (including 1 sports bra; stick to smooth, skin-toned fabrics that won’t show through your tops or require delicate cleaning)
  • 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and everyday use
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (flats, booties, fancy sandals, etc.)
  • 1 pair of athletic shorts
  • Optional: 1 pair of exercise shoes (tie or clip these to the outside of your bag to save space)
  • Optional: 1 midi skirt , maxi skirt, or lightweight dress (if you’re traveling somewhere cold, add a pair of tear-resistant black tights )

Men’s Travel Capsule Wardrobe

  • 3 comfortable, casual t-shirts
  • 1 button-up shirt for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of “nice” shoes (oxfords, loafers, etc.)

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for beach vacations , cruises, and other warm-weather trips.

  • 2-3 casual, comfortable t-shirts or tank tops in breathable fabrics (skip long-sleeve tops)
  • 1-2 short-sleeved blouses or button-up shirts
  • 3 bottoms, at least one of which can be dressed up and down (consider breezy pants, shorts, or lightweight skirts )
  • 2-6 pairs of socks (If you plan on lounging at the beach all day, you can cut this number down to two: the pairs you’ll wear on your roundtrip flights)
  • 2-3 bras (sports bra and everyday)
  • 1 pair of flip flops or walkable sandals (if you’ll be doing any sort of hiking or water sports, make sure to get sandals that you can secure to your foot)
  • 1 pair of “nice” sandals or shoes
  • 1 baseball cap or sun hat
  • 2 bathing suits (one to wear while the other is drying)
  • 1 beach cover up (a lightweight sarong, beach dress, or shorts/top combo)
  • 1 lightweight cardigan, gauzy button up, or other layering top (you don’t need a heavy or insulated jacket for hot-weather trips, but should still bring a light cover-up for air-conditioning and unexpected weather changes)

Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list for winter travel, especially if you’ll be spending time sightseeing outdoors.

  • 1-2 comfortable, casual t-shirts for layering
  • 2 long-sleeved base layers for particularly cold days
  • 1 long-sleeved button-up shirt or blouse for dinners, formal outings, etc.
  • 1 sweater , fleece, or hoodie
  • 1 packable puffer jacket for added insulation (depending on how cold and wet your destination is, you may need to bring an additional coat or shell to protect against rain and wind)
  • 3 bottoms , at least one of which can be dressed up and down
  • 1 pair of weather resistant boots (duck boots, Blundstones , etc.)
  • 1 pair of “nice,” closed-toe shoes
  • 6 pairs of tall socks
  • 1 pair water-resistant gloves
  • Neck gaiter or scarf
  • Optional: long johns or leggings to wear under pants on extremely cold days

Business Travel Capsule Wardrobe

If your travel includes regular meetings, in person or online, consider adding the following to items your capsule wardrobe:

  • 2 collared dress shirts or blouses in wrinkle-resistant fabric (having two means you can rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 2 professional bottom-half pieces, like wrinkle-resistant slacks or knee-length skirts
  • 1 travel blazer
  • 2 pairs of dress socks (if you’ll have in-person meetings)
  • 1 pair of comfortable dress shoes, pumps, or block-heeled sandals
  • Optional: 1 pair of earrings (think: simple studs or small hoops that will go with multiple outfits; don’t bring anything valuable)

Adventure Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use this packing list if you plan to spend a lot of time in the great outdoors:

  • 3 t-shirts or tank tops in performance fabrics like merino wool
  • 1 packable puffer jacket or fleece (plus climate-specific gear if necessary)
  • 2 pairs wool hiking socks (yes, in addition to your other socks; you won’t want to spend the evening lounging in the same grimy socks you wore all day on the trail)
  • 2 sports bras (to rotate while one’s in the wash)
  • 1-2 pairs of athletic shorts
  • 1 pair of quick-drying travel pants
  • 1 pair of sturdy, closed-toe shoes like cross trainers, which are lightweight yet can handle rough terrain (if your trip includes serious trekking, consider clipping a pair of hiking boots to the outside of your pack)
  • 1 pair of water-friendly shoes (stick to shoes like Tevas , Keens , or Chacos , which offer much more stability than flip flops)
  • Baseball hat or visor for sun protection
  • Optional: 1 pair of jeans or other casual bottoms (to wear when not actively adventuring)
  • Optional: 1 pair of multi-use shoes for walking and casual everyday use (consider a supportive slip-on style that’s easy to don after a long day on your feet)

Depending on the weather at your destination, make two workout capsule wardrobes: one for cold weather and one for warm weather. Store one at your home base and swap it out when needed.

The Best Clothing for Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Remember that a good capsule wardrobe is made up of a small number of durable, classic pieces. No cheap throwaways. No fast fashion.

This wardrobe is an investment. If something costs more than you would usually pay, that’s okay, as long as it lasts longer and never goes out of style.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe T-Shirts

Merino wool is the ideal t-shirt fabric because it regulates your body temperature and repels odors. You can wear a merino shirt multiple times before needing to wash it.

Smartwool and Icebreaker are the most popular choices. We also like newer brands like Unbound Merino , Wool & Prince , and Outlier .

For non-wool t-shirts, check out brands like Everlane and Uniqlo .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Jackets

Your choice of jacket completely depends on the weather in your destination and your travel style.

Rainy weather is easy. Most outdoor companies make thin, packable rain jackets . Multiple Tortuga recommend the Patagonia Torrentshell ( men’s , women’s ). L.L. Bean’s H2Off and Columbia’s Arcadia II are solid, affordable picks.

Temperate weather and city trips call for canvas, jean, or shirt jackets, which are easy to dress up or down. Just avoid anything too bulky.

Leather jackets look great with just about anything but are heavy. If you’ll wear yours every day (and thus never have to fit it in your bag), a leather moto can make a strong addition to your wardrobe.

For cold (but not frigid) weather or more outdoorsy destinations, go for a packable puffer that you can layer over a fleece or under a weather-proof shell.

Down insulation offers the best warmth to weight ratio. My Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) kept me warm in actual Patagonia and smooshed into the size of a baseball in my backpack. Uniqlo’s Ultra Light Down Jacket ( men’s , women’s ) is a comparable budget option.

Because down doesn’t work well when wet, consider synthetic fill for drizzly destinations. Synthetic fibers dry faster than down and are also generally cheaper. Either way, stick to dark colors, which keep puffers looking sleek.

For very cold weather, invest in a hip- or knee-length water- and wind-resistant parka. While heavy, you can always stick your parka in the overhead bin during flights and leave it in your room when necessary.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Pants, Shorts, and Skirts

Jeans are some of the toughest, most versatile travel pants around. Just remember to wear them in transit as they’re big, bulky, and hard to pack. Go with your favorite style but avoid pairs with rips and distressing, as this makes them difficult to dress up.

Chinos are classics too. Our favorite travel chinos are from Bluffworks , but every brand from Gap to J. Crew to Banana Republic makes its own version. Find a pair that fits you well and isn’t too bulky.

Active brands like Athleta , Outdoor Voices , and Lululemon also offer a good selection of comfortable, travel-ready pants. Go for dark colors and no one will be able to tell that you’re wearing performance fabrics.

Athletic shorts are another versatile option on the road. They can be used at the gym, for outdoor adventures, as a substitute for pajamas, and as swim trunks.

Midi and maxi skirts are perfect for warm climates because they look fancy while also being comfortable, breezy, and modest.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Shoes

Unless all you’ll be doing is ordering piña coladas from a lounge chair, you’ll need more than a pair of flip-flops.

All travelers should invest in reliable, walkable travel shoes . Depending on the activity level of your trip, these can be loafers, ankle boots, cushioned flats, or even a pair of Birkenstocks .

Cole Haan is famous for its comfortable oxfords, with the packable ZERØGRAND line being particularly great for travel.

Sneakers are fine, but avoid pairs with loud colors or logos that will clash with the rest of your wardrobe. Brands like Thousandfell offer classic white tennis shoes in stain-resistant fabrics, while you can toss Allbirds’ Wool Runners ( men’s , women’s ) directly in the washing machine when your trip’s over.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Socks and Underwear

Choose any brand of underwear that looks good and feels comfortable but avoid cotton if you can. You need a fabric that will repel odors and dry quickly. We’re long-time fans of ExOfficio underwear. ExOfficio has a variety of styles for men or women that dry quickly, wick sweat, and repel odors.

For socks, we recommend Smartwool and Darn Tough . Both brands make wool socks that stay up and fit snugly. You can find both men’s and women ’s socks in every style from thick, calf-high hiking socks to thin, low-rise athletic socks.

A capsule wardrobe ensures that you’ll look great, no matter where your travels take you. You’ll also save time and money in shopping for, packing, and maintaining clothing in the long run.

Best of all, a capsule wardrobe reduces decision-making and eliminates stress from your packing list. That means you can get back to focusing on what matters: enjoying your trip.
