Star trek confirms a forgotten species are its next big bad.

As the Talarians return ahead of Star Trek: Resurgence, the wasted villains have entered a dangerous new age - one that promises to result in war.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Resurgence #2! The Talarians are one of the many hostile species in the Star Trek universe, and a new preview shows the potential the television shows wasted. The Talarians have only made one canonical on-screen appearance, during Star Trek: The Next Generation’s fourth season. Now, in a preview for Star Trek: Resurgence #2 , the Talarians have returned, and they're being led by a familiar face. The issue goes on sale in print and digital December 14.

The Talarians first appeared in The Next Generation 's fourth season, in the episode “Almost Human.” The episode presented the Talarians as a warlike, misogynistic culture - one that had clashed with the Federation in the past. One notable conflict occurred 14 years before the episode, when Talarian forces overran a Federation colony . They took a small boy prisoner, and raised him as one of their own. Many years later, the crew of the Enterprise encountered the boy, now thoroughly integrated into Talarian culture and sporting the name Jono Endar. During the episode, the Federation nearly went to war with the Talarians over the boy, but in the end, he returned to the Talarians. The Talarians were not seen on-screen again, but a new Star Trek video game, Resurgence , is set to position the Talarians as major players in the galaxy - and a preview for issue two shows their potential.

Warp design specialist Leah Brahms has been lost in Talarian territory, and the USS Resolute has been dispatched to find her. The Resolute rendezvous with a Talarian ship - captained by Jono Endar. The Resolute’s captain, Solano, is invited aboard the Talarain ship to discuss Brahm's disappearance. Accepting the offer, Solano transports over. Endar apologizes for the hostile reception, saying the "Talarians stand alone" and have a need to defend themselves. He goes on to reveal that the recently concluded Dominion War took a heavy toll on the Talarians and as the preview ends, he reveals that Talarian society is now "looking inward" to improve the lives of everyone. The issue is written by Andrew Grant and Dan Martin, drawn by Josh Hood, colored by Charlie Kirchoff and lettered by Neil Uyetake.

The Talarians Have Potential to Be Great Star Trek Enemies

The preview ends there, and readers must wait until release to see just what Endar meant by transforming Talarian society - but it's unlikely to work out the way the Federation wishes. The Talarians were shown to be a formidable species, one that struck terror into the hearts of the Federation . The glimpses seen of their society were horrifying as well; they were a culture that condoned violence, kidnapping, child abuse and sexism - all of which makes them the perfect foils for the utopian Federation.

Hopefully, if Talarian society is refocusing itself, it may address the issues that are facing it, and the human Endar may be in the best position to guide the society. However, it's unlikely the videogame prequel will see the Talarians become anything but a major threat, as the marketing has promised the game will find two alien societies "on the brink of war." If the Talarians remain a threat and Doctor Brahms’ experimental warp technology falls into their hands, it could spell doom for the Federation. The Talarains are one of the many underused hostile races in the Star Trek universe, and now they have returned, transformed in a mysterious new way.

The Talarian Republic was a minor interstellar power in the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy , founded and dominated by the Talarian species . The Republic's proximity to the United Federation of Planets , Tzenkethi Coalition and the Cardassian Union brought it into conflict with those powers at various times in its history. The Galen Border conflicts of the 2350s were one such example of strife between the Talarians and their Federation neighbours. However, by the 2380s , relations between the Republic and the Federation had warmed considerably, and the UFP considered the Talarians an ally. • The Enterprise rescues a small group Talarian adolescents, all wearing uniforms. They were on a training mission when they had a radiation leak on board and one of them, Jono (Chad Allen), turns out to be human. Their ship had issued a distress call, but Talarians are fierce warriors and have been known to issue distress calls from observation spacecraft to lure enemies and then blow them up with self-destruct devices. Picard finds that another Talarian spacecraft Q'Maire has answered the call but is several hours away at max warp. Picard asks Riker and Worf to rescue the survivors after Deanna says the life signs on the ship are fading fast. The away team finds 4 Talarians and 1 human as survivors and bring them over to the Enterprise. A medical scan reveals several healed injuries on Jono (2 previously broken ribs, a broken arm and a low grade concussion. There could be neurological impairment as well), leading Dr. Crusher to believe Jono may have been abused & brutalized. Talarians are known to be brutal towards their captured enemies. Jono is a typical rebellious teen but responds well to authority. Only Picard with his stern orders is able to control him. Jono wants to be sent back to his captain, sent back to Endar. Data identifies the boy as Jeremiah Rossa, grandson of Federation Admiral Connaught Rossa (Barbara Townsend). His parents were killed when the Talarians attacked their colony, and the boy was apparently taken prisoner. Although a human, the boy has been fully assimilated into the warlike and highly patriarchal Talarian culture. Therefore, Jeremiah cannot be returned to human society in his current condition. Picard is chosen by the command group to try and convince Jeremiah to stay back and not return to Talarians. Deanna and Beverly cannot do anything as the boy does not respond well to women. Talarian society does not recognize women's right to equality with the males. But Picard is uncomfortable with kids and is very awkward with the boy. He makes things worse. Jono wants to go back. Jono tells Picard that pain does not matter in Talarian society. Passing the test is everything. Deanna speaks to Picard and sends him back to speak to Jeremiah. Deanna says that nobody is born as a good parent, and everybody has to learn along the way. Picard shows Jeremiah's old photos to him to prove he is human When the Talarian Captain Endar (Sherman Howard), who claims Jono as is son, demands the boy's return, Picard refuses. Endar had lost his child to humans on his colony at Caster I, so Talarian custom allowed him to claim the son of a slain enemy, if the opportunity presented itself. Endar says Jono suffered injuries during the normal life on his planet (he was riding a horse like creature when he broke his arm) and to gain the approval and respect of his father. Both sides are willing to go to war over the boy. Picard allows Endar to meet Jono. Jono is clear, he wants to go back. Talarians are no match for the Enterprise, from a weapons capability perspective. Jeremia gets a message from his grandmother, he is confused. Picard takes him for a game of squash. Suddenly all memories of the massacre flood into his brain and Jeremiah collapses, weeping. He remembers wailing at his mother's dead body. Jeremiah is doing well and integrating with the crew, but that night he inexplicably stabs Picard in the middle of the night. Picard speaks to Jono, who tells him that accepting human life made him feel guilt and meant leaving more and more of his Talarian life and brothers behind. He was not prepared to do that. Picard realizes that Jono wants to go back and agrees to the transfer with Endar.

The Talarian Hook Spider is an unusually intelligent arachnid-like lifeform that has perpetuated to many different worlds in the Alpha quadrant due to being a somewhat reliable and controllable form of natural pest control.
