Essential Tips To Know Before Travelling To Singapore

Singapore at a glance, top reasons to visit singapore, best time to visit singapore, top things to do in singapore, shopping in singapore, things to remember when shopping in singapore, foods to try out in singapore, art and culture in singapore.

The island of Singapore was originally inhabited by pirates and fishermen. The Japanese Empire invaded and occupied Singapore during the Second World War from 1942 to 1945. Once the Japanese forces surrendered, British control was established yet again, which led to the merger between Singapore and the Federation of Malaya, thereby causing Malaysia to form in 1963.

Singapore, however, was expelled from Malaysia due to the racial tensions, social unrest, and political problems that took place between Malaysia’s Alliance Party and the People’s Action Party (PAP) of Singapore. Hence, it led to the creation of Singapore as an independent republic in August of 1965.

The food found in Singapore is as diverse as its population, containing Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, Malay, and Western influences. There is a lot of Indian cuisine and influences from Indian cuisine that is present in Singaporean dishes, with Tamil cuisine being quite prevalent in the country. While you’re in the country, don’t forget to visit the hawker centers that will automatically lure you in with the splendid aroma. Let us provide you with some suggestions of the foods you must try out in Singapore:

Hainanese Chicken Rice

The Hainanese Chicken Rice is unofficially the national dish of Singapore. Easily found everywhere, right from restaurants to hawker centers, the dish was adapted from the early Chinese immigrants who inhabited Hainan Island. It’s a dish that is said to be eaten “everywhere, every day” in Singapore.

The dish consists of slices of steamed chicken served with aromatic rice which is cooked in chicken stock and is served along with chili sauce and sliced cucumber. The spices and sauces added to the dish enhance its unique taste.

Char Kway Teow

Char Kway Teow literally translates into ‘stir-fried rice noodles’ and is among those staple items at the hawker centers of Singapore that get sold out in seconds. For this dish, flat rice noodles are stir-fried over high heat with a mix of bean sprouts, blood cockles, sweet dark soy sauce, shives, and Chinese sausage slices.

Lard or pork fat usually forms the heart of Char Kway Teow, but it is often replaced with oil as a healthier alternative, with more vegetables taking the place of proteins. You can usually find it being served on a banana leaf to enhance its appearance.

Although Laksa comes from Malaysia, it is very commonly seen in other Southeast Asian counties as well, such as Singapore and Indonesia. Consisting of flat noodles, cockles, prawns, fish cakes, and coconut soup, Laksa is often eaten along with Otah, which is a fish cake wrapped in leaf parcels.

The spicy noodle soup has a bold red hue and is filled with aromatic herbs. This traditional Peranakan dish is a combination of Chinese and Malay cuisine and is of two types, namely Curry Laksa and Asam Laksa. While Asam Laksa is more common in Malaysia, Curry Laksa is the more popular variant in Singapore.

Fish Head Curry

If you belong to the southern region of India, you have probably had fish head curry several times, and you get to taste the Singaporean version of this dish on your holiday.

As the name states, the dish consists of the head of a fish, which is firstly marinated and cooked in curry sauce and then mixed with various vegetables such as okras and eggplants. It is usually served with bread or rice, along with a glass of local lime juice or calamansi. The dish is extremely flavorful owing to the many spices that go into it, and it possesses a tangy flavor.

Ranked by CNN on the 35th position in the list of the best 50 foods of the world, Singapore’s chili crab is a semi-fried dish made with hard-shell crabs that are cooked in a semi-thick gravy created using a base of tomatoes and chilis.

Once the steamed crabs are partially cracked, they are then stir-fried lightly in a paste which consists of eggs, ketchup, and chili sauce. The dish is usually served with mini mantou buns, and despite having the word ‘chili’ in its name, the dish isn’t too spicy and instead has a tangy, rich, and sweet taste, which is delightfully addictive.

In case you find yourself in Singapore for a couple of days, there are high chances that Kaya Toast will make an appearance on your breakfast table perhaps more than once. Kaya is coconut jam made with sugar, eggs, and coconut milk. Kaya Toast is basically two slices of toast served with kaya and butter and is usually served alongside soft-boiled eggs and coffee.

Best Singapore Package for Family

This beloved Singaporean breakfast food is often served as different variations of itself, such as with brown bread or round buns. Kaya Toast has brown and green variations. The brown one is created using caramelized brown sugar, and the green one is made up of pandan leaves.

Nasi Biryani

Biryani is a dish that is commonly found in various parts of South Asian countries. India, for instance, has a wide variety of biryani available throughout its many states.

The Nasi Biryani found in Singapore will be right up your alley if you’re a biryani lover. It is said that biryani may have originated from the southern part of India, and this dish is made up of basmati rice that is cooked using yogurt, garlic, onions, exotic Indian spices, and aromatic herbs. Toppings of cashews and fried onions can often be found in biryani.

Although the inception of satay can be traced back to Indonesia, it is a popular presence in the hawker centers and restaurants of Singapore. This local delicacy is candied and skewered and is available in the meat of your choice, be it chicken, beef, pork, or mutton. After being marinated with turmeric, the meat is then barbecued and served along with rice dumplings, onions, and peanut sauce. Street food carts often have these in plenty, but make sure to grab yours quickly, as they do sell out fast.

Oyster Omelette

Oyster omelette or orh luak has a Min Nan origin, where an egg omelet is mixed with flour and then fried with small oysters. It is garnished with crispy bean sprouts, coriander leaves, and a sauce that is both sweet and spicy. The omelet can either be made crispy or soft, as per your preference. Owing to the high-calorie count, this dish is consumed occasionally but is a must-have when you’re visiting Singapore.

Roti prata, which is a South Indian flatbread, also goes by the name of the ‘Asian croissant’ and is found in many countries in Southeast Asia. It’s made after stretching the wheat flour into a thin, layered, and large flatbread, after which it’s cooked on the pan for about three to five minutes. This crispy, crunchy, and soft concoction can be eaten with a vegetable curry or a meat-based curry, such as chicken, beef, or fish.

Having originated in Malaysia, Nasi Lemak has made a staple place for itself in Singapore’s cuisine. Made up of coconut rice, anchovies, a cucumber slice, a slice of omelet, and a bit of chili paste, the concoction is either packed in a banana leaf or brown paper. A common dish at restaurants and hawker centers, this is most commonly consumed during breakfast. Certain eateries also present Nasi Lemak along with Redang curries.

Hokkien Mee

Hokkien mee literally means ‘Fujian noodles’ as it originated in the Fujian province of southern China during World War II, and eventually became a part of the cuisine of Singapore. It’s a dish that’s always in demand at the hawker stalls around the country. Comprising of rice noodles and yellow egg noodles that are stir-fried with fragrant prawn stock, the toppings of this beloved dish include tender slices of pork belly, bean sprouts, fishcake, and prawns.

Since Singapore has a significant percentage of Southern Chinese immigrants, Chinese Buddhism is the most prevalent religion in the island country. As there are many South Indian individuals who reside in the country as well, Hinduism is another religion that’s quite commonly practiced. Islam, Christianity, and Taoism are the other religions followed in Singapore.

The country of Singapore has four official languages, namely English, Tamil, Malay, and Mandarin. The language that is most commonly spoken in the country is English, as it was once a Crown colony of the United Kingdom. Hence, English is the language used in Singapore’s trade and commerce, judicial system, and public service and administration. Singaporean English is what is mainly spoken in the country today, locally known as Singlish.

Folk dance and music

The diversity of Singapore’s culture is very well reflected in the dance forms present in the country, comprising of both traditional and contemporary dances. The traditional dance form known as lion dance often makes an appearance in numerous festivals, such as the New Year, and there is also Zapin, which is the Malay National Dance. If you enjoy ballet and opera, then Singapore will provide you with one of the best musical experiences due to the presence of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

What to eat in Singapore

Singapore being a melting pot of cultures and traditions has a varied cuisine. Food makes up for a major Singapore attraction. A rich heritage of foods steeped in Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian and Chinese cultures, make up for the food scene in Singapore. Here are a few authentic dishes in Singapore which are a definite must-try during your Singapore holiday

Laksa: Laksa, being a mash-up of Chinese and Malay elements, is the perfect dish to try in Singapore. There are two main types, the curry laksa and asam laksa. It is traditionally made with vermicelli, coconut milk, fish slices, shrimp and cockles.

Chilli Crab: This is the national dish of Singapore and also featured in CNN’s list of the World’s top 50 most delicious foods. The dish is a simple one consisting of stir-fried crab served in savoury tomato-chilli sauce. If you enjoy seafood, this is one dish you must try on your Singapore trip. Hokkien Mee: This fried noodle dish is one of the most popular street foods in Singapore. It consists of a mix of yellow and white noodles, combined with bean sprouts and fried along with egg and sometimes seafood. Some hawkers serve it dry, some add a gravy.

Carrot Cake (Chai Tow Kway): This popular Singapore snack is made using radish, not carrots! Shredded daikon radish is mixed with rice flour, formed into rice cakes and fried along with eggs.

Wanton noodles: The Singaporean wanton noodles are influenced by the cuisine of Hong Kong and are typically eaten dry, with slices of pork char siew and wonton dumplings and served with a bowl of soup on side.

When in Singapore, trying out its unique food scene is a necessity to experience its varied culture!

Cool things to do in Singapore

Now that you know all about the important places to visit in Singapore, we would also recommend that you take out some time for some authentic and offbeat experiences during your Singapore trip.

Here are some cool and interesting things to do in Singapore, which will elevate your Singapore itinerary beyond the normal to the extraordinary!

Explore authentic local neighbourhoods

No country exemplifies cultural and religious fusion better than Singapore does. Learn a little more about some of these cultures that contribute to Singapore tourism by exploring some of the ethnic neighbourhoods. Explore Chinatown , the vibrant neighbourhood characterized by red Chinese lanterns, scores of eateries and shopfronts, ancient heritage homes and upscale boutiques all co-existing cheerfully. The key Singapore tourist attractions here are the Chinese Heritage Centre, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the Sri Mariamman Hindu temple. Walk around Little India and the Arab Street areas, colourful neighbourhoods known for their celebrations of traditional festivals. The Sri Veeramakaliamma Temple and the Sultan Mosque are important places to see here.

Take your kids on the Night Safari

Nightlife of a different kind! The Singapore Night Safari is the world’s first nocturnal park, and is open only at night, every night. It is one of the most awarded Singapore tourist places and is very popular especially with children. The park can be toured conveniently via tram, and offers the opportunity to see nocturnal animals from different continents such as the Malayan Tiger, Asian Lion, Nile Hippo, White African Lion, Leopard, Giant Flying Squirrel, Tapir, Pangolin, Loris and more. If you are booking a Singapore package with your family, do ensure that you include this place in your Singapore itinerary. Children will also love the “Creatures of the Night” show.

Pick an adrenalin-pumping adventure

This destination offers a ton of options for the thrill-seekers looking to add an element of adventure to their Singapore holiday. At iFly Singapore on Sentosa Island, you will find the world’s largest wind tunnel for indoor skydiving. Also at Sentosa, you can try Bungy jumping with a view of Siloso beach, or enjoy the Giant Swing that takes you 40m high at speeds reaching 100km/hr. For those who love cars, Singapore offers the opportunity to drive Super Cars like the Lamborghini Huracan or the McLaren 12C on the Singapore F1 race route! Water sports enthusiasts can pick from knee-boarding, wakeboarding, and cable skiing at Singapore Wake Park , or enjoy stand-up paddling at Tanjong beach . Snorkelling and Scuba diving are also available at various island sites around Singapore. Add an adventurous twist to your Singapore honeymoon package by picking from any of these experiences!

Go on a Street Food exploration

Singapore is a true haven for the foodie. The Hawker centres here are a Singapore attraction in their own right. Hawker centres of Singapore are essentially groups of street food stalls arranged like food courts, offering everything from snacks to entire meals. A Singapore holiday is incomplete without experiencing at least one of these. Try the Chinatown Complex or the Old Airport Road Food Centre to eat like a local. The Hong Lim Food Centre and Golden Mile Food Centre are not only amazingly good, they also offer some vegetarian options. Alternatively, explore Bugis Street for its various street food options.

Admire the colourful Ann Siang Hill

If you’ve seen the film “Crazy Rich Asians”, this is the place with the gorgeous pastel coloured shopfronts that was featured in the movie. Ann Siang Hill used to be the residential enclave of the wealthy in the 19 th century; it is now famous for its insta-worthy coloured shophouses and its happening cafes, boutiques, clubs and restaurants.

Take a river cruise

Starting from Clarke Quay, a River Cruise is a great and relaxing way to see some of the Singapore tourist attractions. You will experience a ride on the iconic Singapore bumboat – traditional wooden boats that were originally used to ferry cargo and people across the river. Enjoy views of Singapore attractions like the Merlion, Marina Bay Sands, Clarke Quay and the Singapore Flyer. If you take this cruise in the evening you can watch the attractions as they get illuminated. This is a great activity to include into your Singapore tour package.

Go shopping!!

Apart from Singapore sightseeing, a popular aspect of any Singapore travel package should be retail therapy! Visit Orchard Road for the latest in branded clothes and accessories, be it high street brands or haute couture. Alternatively, go to Haji Street to pick up unique finds at the independent designer stores and handicraft shops here. Bugis Street offers a lot of wallet-friendly street shopping for the fashion lovers, while the IMM Outlet Mall offers highly discounted outlet shopping for a range of fashion brands. In Little India, the Mustafa  mall is famous for offering cheap prices on a range of products.

Click your picture with the Merlion

The Merlion Park in Singapore is where the two most famous Merlion statues in Singapore can be seen – the main Merlion and a 2 metre tall Merlion “cub”. However, did you know that there are a total of 7 officially approved Merlion statues in Singapore? You can see a giant Merlion in Sentosa, and another one at Mount Faber.

Visit the world’s largest Orchid garden

The Singapore Botanic Gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places to visit in Singapore if you are a nature lover. This huge garden houses over 10,000 plant species and is Singapore’s oldest existing garden space, a perfect location for a picnic or just a morning out in nature. One of the highlights of the Botanic Gardens is the National Orchid Garden , which has the world’s largest orchid display with over 60,000 plants and orchids available for visitors to marvel at. Another highlight of the Botanic Gardens is the Childrens’ Garden, where children are invited to play and learn about plant life. For a Singapore travel package with kids, this is definitely a fun thing to include in your plan.

Singapore nightlife experiences to add to your itinerary

One of the highlights of Singapore holiday packages is the vibrant nightlife of the city. Here are a few things to do in Singapore, without which your Singapore itinerary is incomplete. If you are looking to book a Singapore honeymoon package, pay special attention!

Sip on a cocktail

Singapore is known for its cocktail scene, replete with unique creations by some of the top-rated mixologists. The very famous Singapore Sling is a classic cocktail - a medley of gin, cherry brandy, benedictine, grenadine, and Cointreau, mellowed with lime and pineapple juice. The best place to have this drink is of course where it was invented – the Long Bar at The Raffles. The Raffles is set to reopen after an extensive renovation in 2019. Another cool version is Nutmeg & Clove’s Barrel Aged Singapura Sling , designed by the Taiwanese bartender Kae Yin. This is a spiced hibiscus-infused Tanqueray London Dry gin with Cherry Heering, a definite must-try! When in Singapore, don’t forget to taste the Benedictine Dom , which is a mix of goji & red date syrup, orange cream citrate and aromatic bitters in a wooden cask. Served out of a porcelain cup, perched on a rattan rickshaw, its serving style adds up to its authenticity!

Spin the dice at the Marina Bay Sands

An oasis of chic, the Marina Bay is one of the most iconic amongst the Singapore attractions.  Dotted with bars along the waters and a few out in the roof, Marina Bay Sands is quite a sight at night!  The Casino here is a huge gambling space spread over 4 levels. There are over 600 table games and 1,500 slots. The Marina Bay Sands is billed as one of the world’s most expensive casino properties. Take your Lady Luck along to try your luck here!

Enjoy the high at a rooftop bar

A drink in one of the rooftop bars around Singapore with a view of the Singapore night skyline is a must-do experience on your Singapore honeymoon package! Enjoy panoramic views from the world’s highest alfresco bar on the 63 rd floor at the 1 Altitude Bar , or head to the Lantern rooftop bar at the Fullerton Bay Hotel for unobstructed views of the water and the light show at the Marina Bay Sands. You could also visit Ce La Vi, the rooftop restaurant and bar at the Marina Bay Sands, one of the most popular places to visit in Singapore for a drink thanks to its amazing views. For something more unique, how about the Supertree by IndoChine – imagine having a drink while sitting atop the tallest Supertree at the Gardens by the Bay! If you are looking for a casual night out, try Loof for local flavours, happy hour deals and DJ music.

Go Bar hopping at Clark Quay

The party hub of Singapore, Clarke Quay is known for its nightlife, earmarked by dazzling lights and a kaleidoscope of night-clubs, pubs and bars along the Singapore River. Post sunset, there is a heightened sense of excitement as the area comes alive. Of all the bars in Singapore, Clarke Quay has some of the best in the business!  The Bar Cocoon, Bamboo Bar, the Forbidden City, Bar Opiume at the Empress Place along the river, and Attica deserve special mention!

Dance the night away at a club

If you enjoy dancing and partying, then Singapore has a lot to offer you. Enjoy the vibrant and colourful party scene in Singapore along with your friends or partner. If you are on a short trip to Singapore then don’t miss Zouk , the best nightclub in Singapore. For beach parties on the weekend, you cannot go wrong with the Tanjong Beach Club on Sentosa Island. Cherry Disco offers hip hop and disco for those who want a change from the usual EDM. For a premium experience, there is the Pangea , a super luxury club at the Marina Bay Sands.

About Singapore

Singapore has been always been a popular vacation destination for people since decades. One of the reasons why it is so famed is because of its ability to keep reinventing itself every few years. Whether it’s in terms of iconic landmarks or beautiful sights and fantastic things to do, Singapore has become a melting pot of culture and is well-known among people for its delicious street food and high-end shopping malls. Singapore is the upper crust when it comes to holidaying in Asia as it offers a cosmopolitan experience unmatched by any other Asian destination.

Singapore has everything going for it – a superb transport system, glitzy nightlife, awe-inspiring architecture, and entertainment options that begin right at the Changi Airport which has consistently been chosen as one of the top airports in the world and for good reason too. Singapore tourists are sure to find themselves spoiled for choice as they come across the many different facets of this city and all that there is to explore.

Facts you need to know about Singapore

  • Singapore is the only island city-state in the world & has a population of approximately 5.5 million people
  • It is the 4th largest financial center in the world; the 2nd busiest port in the world; one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world; one of the highest per capita incomes and standard of living in the world.
  • The tallest indoor waterfall in the world is located in Singapore at the Gardens by the Bay, and it stands at a height of 35 meters

Best Time to Visit Singapore

Although Singapore is a year-round destination, the months from November to January, which are the winter months can be the best time to visit Singapore . The weather is not as hot and humid as it is throughout the rest of the year. Christmas and New Year are celebrated with great gusto here and it’s a complete treat for the senses if you happen to visit during this time. The downside is that this is also peak time and the crowds can be quite a deterrent especially if you were looking for a quiet vacation. Also, since the Chinese New Year falls during this time, it’s very likely that you will find ticket and accommodation prices soaring if you haven’t booked ahead of time.

Another great time to visit Singapore is during the month of July. This is especially if you love shopping or food because Singapore has the Great Singapore Sale and Singapore Food Festival during this time. April is also a good time to visit if you’re looking to save money on flights and bookings while the offseason in Singapore is between August and October. Since Singapore hosts the Singapore Grand Prix in mid-September, you can however expect an influx of tourists. But apart from that, hotel rates during this time are quite manageable.

How to Reach Singapore

The best way to reach Singapore is by flight. Singapore is well-connected to India by several direct flights from various cities. There are numerous major airlines that connect India with Singapore and some of these include Air India, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airlines and Tiger Airways to name a few. Some of the cities from where you can fly directly to Singapore include New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Singapore’s Changi Airport is stunning and offers several facilities like a swimming pool, gym and gorgeous gardens, and even movie theatres, offering passengers an unforgettable experience.

If you’re traveling from Malaysia, then you can reach Singapore by road too. There’s a causeway between Singapore and Johor Bahru and you can rent a car and drive between both countries yourself. You can also opt to hire a taxi or simply take a bus if you wish to travel from Malaysia to Singapore. You can also travel to Singapore by train, and there are two lines. One connects Singapore with Malaysia and the other connects it with Thailand.

Local transport in Singapore is efficient and organized. You can opt for the MRT for which you can take the EZ-Link Card or a Singapore Tourist Pass if you’re staying for more than a week. The buses are also well-connected and alternatively, you can try the trishaws, but you need to have decent bargaining skills, or you’ll end up spending a lot of money.

Places to Visit in Singapore

Singapore is one of the most electric cities that you can find yourself in, a city that is vibrant and alive with culture, technology and the most amazing food you can find. As a city that constantly keeps changing to keep up with the times, it’s also a city that never stays suspended in time. It’s always evolving and yet, there are some places to visit in Singapore  that are perennial favourites. Here are some of them.

Sentosa Island

Universal studios, botanic gardens, gardens by the bay, jurong bird park.

A trip to Singapore simply must include a visit to Universal Studios in Resorts World Sentosa, which has thrilling and exciting rides as well as some spectacular shows. A 49-acre park with seven fun zones, Universal Studios offers the kind of enjoyment that makes adults wish they were back in their childhood. A perfect family outing that includes some hair-raising rides featuring some of the most famous pop culture icons such as Transformers, Jurassic Park, and Sesame Street. Some of the shows here are also extremely thrilling.

Even if you’re not much of a nature enthusiast, you’ll be stunned by the gorgeous greenery of the Singapore Botanic Gardens that is spread out over 82 hectares and has more than 10,000 species of plants and trees. The National Orchid Garden and the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden are wonderful, but the real treat is the interactive rainforest exhibit which is an unforgettable experience with its museums, statues, fountains and a beautiful lake to top it all.

Right in the middle of Singapore, you’ll come across these stunning structures that look like something out a futuristic movie. These Supertree structures which are a part of the Gardens by the Bay are simply fantastical and they are connected by a skyway that allows people to go on a skywalk that looks out over the gardens. The greenhouse is also shaped like a seashell and it is called the Flower Dome and is currently the largest glass greenhouse in the world. The Super trees, the gardens and the conservatories are spectacular.

If you are looking for a bustling look at contemporary Chinese culture in Singapore, then look no further than Chinatown with its heritage red lanterns, authentic and delicious Chinese food, traditional shops and temples and much more. It’s easy to lose yourself in the middle of this cultivated chaos filled with ceremonies and cultural relics that it’s quite easy to forget that you’re in modern Singapore. Food is also one of the big draws here, especially delicious street food that’s cheap and has a wide variety.

One of the most famous landmarks of Singapore is the Jurong Bird Park which is known to have around 5000 birds from 400 different species. There are several interactive shows and exhibits that will keep you enthralled. But the most spectacular sight here is the Waterfall Aviary which is a delight to the senses. The 30m high waterfall is the world’s largest walk-in aviary. Other things to see here include the Penguin Coast, the Pelican Cove and the Flamingo Lake.

Would you believe it that some people make a trip to Singapore, just to enjoy the food? Yes, it’s true. Singapore is rightly considered a feast for the taste buds and a huge number of choices – Malay, Chinese, Japanese, Indian and even continental. There’s something for everyone here. While the range of food in Singapore is quite mind-boggling, here are a few dishes that you must try while you are here.

One of the most popular dishes that you should certainly try when in Singapore is BakChorMee which translates to minced meat and noodles. However, the dish itself is not as mundane as the translation, because it’s a glorious combination of minced meat layered with broth and flat egg noodles, spiced with chilies and a tangy aftertaste.

It’s quite possible that you will have the best dim sums of your life in Singapore. While available all over China and other Asian countries, the dim sum here melts in the mouth and is stuffed with curried chicken, vegetables, pork, beef or seafood. Dim sum in Singapore can often veer into the main course category as people just can’t stop eating them!

This is street food at its best. Strips of meat, be it beef, chicken or pork are skewered and basted with sauce to create a chewy and delicious delight which is often served with peanut sauce and onion rings. This tasty treat is found in most street food outlets and is often sold out very fast.

Drinking Water

Singapore tap water is safe & potable to drink. The water in Singapore undergoes a multi-step purification process, which includes coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The water is then stored in covered reservoirs and distributed through a network of pipes to homes and businesses throughout the country.

Popular Local Cuisines in Singapore

Singapore's multi-ethnic culture and heritage presents a multitude of colourful cuisines, each with its own unique flavor. From Michelin-starred delicacies and international cuisines to scrumptious creations by homegrown chefs and timeless hawker favorite’s, this is where you can taste it all. Savour new flavours, new atmospheres, and discover the obsession that goes into crafting every dish.

  • Chwee kueh: It may not be the prettiest belle at the ball, but we think chwee kueh is in a league of its own. It’s definitely one of our top picks for breakfast foods around the island. Nothing beats the simplicity of chewy rice cakes. And when you slather them in salty chye poh and tangy chilli, you’ve got the perfect bite.
  • Wanton mee: A perfect bowl of wanton noodles should be a medley of wildly contrasting textures. Firm, springy noodles drenched in sauce, soft dumplings stuffed with flavourful meat, and thick char siew (barbecued pork) slices with a good bit of charring. Some of our top picks include Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist and Fei Fei Roasted Noodle.
  • Char kway teow: This fried rice noodle dish may not score major points for presentation, but we guarantee you it’s darned tasty. What you’ll get is a plate of flat rice noodles, stir-fried in sweet dark soy sauce with fishcake, egg, bean sprouts, prawns and cockles. It’s no secret that this doesn’t register high on the health-o-meter, but we just can’t resist digging into a plate at the much-lauded Armenian Street Char Kway Teow.

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

  • I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
  • I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
  • Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Insider Today

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

singapore tour by kesari

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

singapore tour by kesari

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

singapore tour by kesari

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

singapore tour by kesari

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

singapore tour by kesari

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

Shannon Tan to miss Singapore Ladies Masters as she makes a push for the Majors

singapore tour by kesari

SINGAPORE – Shannon Tan will not be defending her Singapore Ladies Masters title in June as the Singaporean golfer sets her sights on qualifying for the Majors.

Tan told The Straits Times on April 11: “This has been a very difficult decision. Winning the Singapore Ladies Masters last year has been one of my career highlights.”

The June 14-16 event at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club clashes with the 20-year-old’s schedule on the Ladies European Tour (LET).

According to the LET website, there is a tentative tournament during that same week in Europe.

She added: “This year marks my rookie year on the Ladies European Tour and as much as I would love to return to defend my title, my focus is to be in Europe to further my ambitions to qualify for the Majors.

“I can’t wait to play in Singapore again when my schedule allows.”

She won the 2023 event as an amateur, becoming just the second Singaporean to triumph on the China Ladies Professional Golf Association (CLPGA) Tour.

A few months later, Tan made history as she secured her LET card , a first for a Singaporean golfer.

Tan, who turned professional in January, made an immediate impact by claiming the first tournament of the season – the Magical Kenya Ladies Open – the following month.

Since then, she has claimed two top-15 finishes in five official LET events and currently sits fourth in the Order of Merit.

Tan is vying for a spot at the two Majors co-sanctioned by the LET and the LPGA Tour – the Evian Championship from July 11 to 14 in France and the Women’s British Open in Scotland from Aug 22 to 25.

The world No. 197 is also in the running for one of the 60 spots for the Paris Olympics. She currently sits 48th in the women’s Olympic Golf Rankings, with the qualification period ending on June 24.

The Singapore Ladies Masters is the sixth leg of this season’s CLPGA Tour and boasts a prize purse of US$100,000 (S$135,000) with US$15,000 for the winner.

Among the notable China golfers for the 54-hole event are Sui Xiang and Ji Yuai, who finished second by a shot to Tan in the 2023 event.

Follow our news, recent searches, no more trishaw rides in singapore after last licensed operator ceased tours mid-2023, advertisement.

Trishaw tours have not run in Singapore since June 2023.

Davina Tham

SINGAPORE: Trishaws have stopped plying the streets of Singapore since June 2023, after the contract of the country's last trishaw operator ended and was not renewed.

The operator, Trishaw Uncle, had run trishaw tours from Albert Mall Trishaw Park on Queen Street since 2010.

Trishaw Uncle executive Tieu Xin Yue told CNA that the company had obtained its licence to operate through a contract with the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

"Prior to the end of our contract term, which (was) last May, we were told that we will have to return the site for other uses," Ms Tieu said on Tuesday (Apr 9).

Trishaw Uncle was the last remaining licensed trishaw operator at the time its contract expired end-May 2023, she added.

STB's director of travel agents and tourist guides Annie Chang confirmed that the site of Trishaw Park at Queen Street was "returned to the relevant agencies for their review on usage of the site".

"There are currently no other trishaw services operating in Singapore," she added.

Ms Tieu said that after Trishaw Uncle was informed it could not continue to use the Queen Street space, it spoke to STB about the possibility of using another site.

Trishaw Uncle shortlisted potential sites in Chinatown, Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay for discussion with STB last year.

But the business was not able to find a suitable place, as it was informed that the shortlisted sites had other uses or that it was not allowed to use the space, said Ms Tieu.

She added that apart from being a site where trishaws can be parked, the company also needs to consider access to tour routes when choosing a site. "It needs to tick all the boxes before we decide that it's a good place," she said.

Trishaw Uncle owned 100 trishaws but scrapped these shortly after its contract ended, as it was unable to find a suitable holding place for them, added Ms Tieu.

The company used to run tours covering popular tourist destinations like Little India, Chinatown, Kampong Glam and the Civic District.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Trishaw Uncle hired about 40 to 50 trishaw riders, most of them on a part-time basis. This dropped to about 20 active riders after the pandemic.

Ms Tieu said the trishaw tours represented Singapore's heritage and were "an icon" of the country.

"If there's an alternative site, of course we will be willing to restart these operations," she added.

STB said: "Many of our local tour operators offer a variety of tours in new and different formats. We are confident that many of these offerings will appeal to both international and local visitors."

CNA has contacted the tourism bureau for more information.
