1. Indiana Scenic Drives: Indiana Road 62 (SR 62)

• Distance : 223 miles
• Time needed : 4 hours to 1 day 

Crossing almost the entire state, this scenic drive in Indiana passes through a diverse landscape of forests, historic towns, Amish communities, and rivers. 

Beginning on the border of Illinois to Dearborn County near Cincinnati, Ohio , it’s a perfect drive for travelers crossing through Indiana, or you can break it into segments for shorter trips. 

The route will take you through several historic towns, such as Boonville, Mount Vernon, and Corydon. In Corydon, you’ll find the first state capitol building of Indiana, and you can visit the site of the historic Battle of Corydon , where a battle during the Civil War took place. 

Although Indiana is a relatively flat state, this route does experience more change in elevation than you might expect, so you’ll come across some nice lookouts throughout your drive. 

When to visit : Any time of year is good, but autumn is good if you want to see the fall foliage along this Indiana scenic route.

2. Indiana Scenic Drives: Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway

• Distance : 76 miles
• Time needed : 3-6 hours depending on stops

When traveling along this scenic drive in Alabama, we’d recommend planning to set some time aside to visit the historic attractions at the Whitewater Canal. 

At the canal, you’ll have the chance to see the original locks built on the Whitewater River, tour historic homes, or take a horse-drawn carriage ride. 

If you have a bit more time and enjoy exploring the outdoors, then hiking along the Whitewater River Canal trail is a must. This easily accessible trail is a great outdoor activity for families looking for a chance to stretch their legs during a road trip in Indiana! 

The rest of the route crosses between the historic National Road of Indiana and the Ohio River Valley, along which you’ll be treated to idyllic river scenes and rolling countryside. 

When to go : Spring through fall are the best times of year for enjoying the outdoor activities around Whitewater Canal.

3. Indiana Scenic Drives: Lincoln Highway

• Distance : 155 miles
• Time needed : 3 hours to 1 day, depending on stops

The actual length of this highway spans from New York to California, making it one of the most traversed roads in the United States. It’s an excellent route to take when driving in Indiana, both for the views and historic significance. 

This was the first highway to cross across the entire length of the United States, and many of the towns it passes through have interesting historic attractions. 

If you have to pick and choose where to stop, we’d definitely recommend planning to visit the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site . This 86-acre park has a replica of the cabin home of Abraham Lincoln’s father, as well as pleasant pathways and picnic areas. 

History enthusiasts traveling this Indiana scenic route can add another level of discovery by finding the historic mile markers, each bearing a carving of President Lincoln. These can be found in some of the major stops, such as Fort Wayne. 

There’s also a Visitor Center in Fort Wayne with more information about the highway and some awesome historic diners which make for great spots to grab a meal or snack during your road trip in Indiana. 

When to go : Any time of year is good to travel the Lincoln Highway, but keep in mind that during the summer, it can be more difficult to get hotel reservations directly on the route since it’s a popular travel time.

4. Indiana Scenic Drives: Ohio River Scenic Byway

• Distance : 303 miles
• Time needed : 1-2 days, depending on stops

Following the Ohio River through southeastern Indiana, this route combines the natural beauty of the river with a charming historic vibe thanks to the numerous quaint towns along the way. 

The Ohio River Scenic Byway is a particularly great drive in Indiana for families, thanks to the numerous attractions and family-friendly stops along the way. 

There are plenty of places to visit for outdoor adventures. Some of the best stopping points are Harmonie State Park where there are excellent swimming areas and trails for hiking and biking, and the Indiana Caverns which are Indiana’s longest cavern, where you can take a boat ride for a surreal experience through the caves.

• Distance : 620 miles in total, about 140 miles in Indiana
• Time needed : 4 hours to 1 day, depending on stops

As you might be able to guess from the name, the Historic National Road marks an important point in the construction of highways in the United States. Being the first federally funded highway in America, traveling this scenic drive in Indiana is like taking a step back in history. 

There are 32 designated National Register sites along the way, which mark important historic landmarks or natural formations. These make great stopping points to explore some of Indiana’s history. 

Many of the towns along the road have preserved their historic charm with old diners, gas stations, and elegant Victorian-style homes lining leafy streets. Some of the historic mansions offer tours, and in summer, it’s common to spot craft and artisan fairs. 

Golf is also a popular recreational activity, with numerous courses along the route set within the picturesque green landscape of southern Indiana. For families, there are multiple parks for hiking, biking, and swimming. 

Thanks to all the activities and attractions, this scenic drive in Indiana could easily be split into multiple days. Or if you’re just passing through the state, the National Road continues into Ohio and Illinois , making it a great scenic route for road trips through Indiana. 

When to go : Summer is the best time for outdoor activities, but any time of year is good for traveling the National Road. 

6. Indiana Scenic Drives: Heritage Trail

This gently winding scenic drive takes you through six charming towns, including Elkhart , Goshen , Bristol , and Wakarusa , known for their Amish communities and local shops full of character.

Indiana Road Trip: 21 BEST Things to Do in So. Indiana [updated 2022]

Driving through Indiana might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a road trip, but it’s a route that definitely should be considered.  Road trips can be a ton of fun, especially when there are stops all along the way that blends together a mix of fun, good food, adventure, history, culture, and architecture.  Southern Indiana has all of these!  If driven straight through, this Indiana road trip would only take around four hours, but there are more than enough interesting stops to spend a day or more at each of the five main areas.

Each of the places below is only between one and three hours from Indianapolis. If you flying into or beginning from there, here are some fun things to do in Indianapolis .

Columbus, Indiana

1. miller house and gardens.

The Miller House is one of the finest expressions of American modernism — an integration of a bright and open floor plan home featuring stone and glass walls, skylights, and colorful textiles.  The compelling landscaping is concerned with the composition of shaping spaces… The house showcases the work of leading 20 th -century architects and designers: Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley.

2. Zaharokos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

Step inside Zaharakos and you’re stepping back in time to an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with stained glass Tiffany lamps, carved oak, and marble, and a double soda fountain. There’s also a museum where you can learn about soda fountains and mechanical music after you finish their famous GOM spicy sloppy joe and cheese sandwich followed by their Tin Roof Sundae.

Downtown Columbus is perfect for an afternoon stroll.  Stop in at the Bartholomew Public Library, admire the public sculptures and architecture of First Christian Church, or my favorite – peak through the wrought iron gates into the colorful manicured courtyards of the majestic historic homes.

The park is often called “Little Smokies” because of the resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains.  The park encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges, and ravines, and offers 20 miles of tree-lined roads, hiking trails, and scenic overlooks for some of Indiana’s best sunsets.

Known as the “artist colony of the mid-west,” the charming village of Nashville is overflowing with pristine country shops selling original art, handmade crafts, and antiques. It’s one of the many charming small towns in Indiana .

No Indiana road trip would be complete without a visit to Indiana University. Founded in 1820, the Bloomington campus is the flagship campus of IU’s eight campuses statewide, and the heart of the attractive college town.  The campus is beautiful, with historic architecture, rich history, and landscaped gardens and walkways.  Tours available.

The Lily Library is a treasure of rare books, manuscripts, and special collections and well worth an hour or two of exploration.  Rare copies of (my favorite!) Alice in Wonderland are juxtaposed next to other old gems like a first printed collection of William Shakespeare’s plays, and a handwritten letter by Edgar Allen Poe. There was an official Oscar that everyone insisted I should hold (gloved) as it was only appropriate.  What??? I was caught off-guard, and blushed a bit, as you can see.

8. Hoosier Ridge Fire Tower

The Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower stands guard over the Charles C. Deam Wilderness. It was originally built to protect the forest from wildfire.  The 100-foot steel structure was built in 1936 and was the last lookout tower for the Hoosier National Forest, manned until the 1970s.  It is no longer in use, but the adventurous can climb the 123 metal steps to the top for a spectacular panoramic view.

9. Four Winds Resort and Marina

Four Winds is located on picturesque Lake Monroe, Indiana’s largest inland lake, about 15 minutes from downtown Bloomington. The boutique inn offers two restaurants, a private beach, an indoor/outdoor heated saltwater pool, boat and wave runner rentals, fitness center, tennis courts, basketball, and mini-golf. On the premises are also hiking and walking trails, picnic shelters, fishing, and boating.

10. Oliver Winery

Oliver Winery is Indiana’s oldest and largest winery with a distribution of their award-winning, fruit-forward wines to 18 states. They offer daily wine tasting and weekend tours of the production facility and cellar. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful with walking paths to soak in the atmosphere as you enjoy a glass of your favorite wine. An assortment of gourmet picnic items are available, as well as gifts and accessories.

47,000 sq. ft. Dubois Museum houses an extensive collection of regional collectibles, proudly curated by local volunteers who act as guides in period dress. The upper level is dedicated to military and sports, while the lower level hosts a full-size log cabin, agriculture equipment, German heritage, and a wildlife adventure room especially popular with children.

12. Jasper City Mill

Stepping into the replica mill is like taking a step back in time. Visitors are invited to watch the process of corn being ground into cornmeal the old-fashioned way using a water wheel.  The Jasper City Mill is situated on the scenic 2.1-mile paved Riverwalk path along Patoka River, which is the best place to get a view of the working mill’s waterwheel.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to ride the rails as it was during its Golden Age, then climb aboard – for a journey or at least a tour – on the Spirit of Jasper .  The painstakingly restored train takes passengers on a luxurious and romantic dinner excursion through unspoiled Indiana countryside to fabulous French Lick.

14. Schnitzelbank

Named as one of the Top 10 independent restaurants in Indiana, Schnitzelbank is a festive and delicious place to stop for a bite. The eatery has evolved into a destination in itself, dousing customers with its “Olde World” ambiance, delicious German dishes such as goulash, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerbraten. To add to the fun, Sandra Chastain, decked out in traditional German garb, crooned out German folk songs while playing the accordion and then passed out song music we could all sing along.  No one went away hungry or unhappy!

15. French Lick Springs Resort

Established in 1845, this upscale historic hotel is the winner of the 2015 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Historic Hotel. The French Lick Resort is the perfect blend of history with modern amenities and offers golf, spa, hiking, biking, swimming, tennis, or shopping.

16. Monastery of Immaculate Conception

Also known as the “Castle on the Hill,” the Monastery in Ferdinand is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Benedictine women who originally came from Germany to teach and run a boarding school. The highlight of the tour is Sister Christine, who guided us through the exquisite interior from her motorized wheelchair, regaling us with information as well as humorous stories of her youthful misadventures as a young Sister.

17. League Stadium

If you’ve seen the movie A League of Their Own with Geena Davis, Madonna, Tom Hanks, and Rosie O’Donnell, then you’ll recognize League Stadium in Huntingburg.  The stadium, built in 1894 was the setting for this fictionalized account of the Rockford Peaches and based on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League , from 1943-1954.  Park Director Jim Rueger, who was an extra in the movie, told us that Coke, Columbia Studio, and Budweiser each paid one million dollars to advertise on the outfield billboards.

Established in 1872 as “The First and Last Chance Saloon,” Snaps is a favorite with locals.  Snaps claims to hold the oldest liquor license in Dubois County and it was the first bar to be granted the honor one at the end of the prohibition. The fried gator snaps appetizers are a must-try.

Abraham Lincoln, one of the country’s most admired presidents, grew up and formed much of his character and morality in southern Indiana.  The memorial contains a typical 1980’s homestead on land owned by Thomas Lincoln, a visitor’s center with Lincoln exhibits, hiking trails, and memorials.

19. Saint Meinrad Archabby

The Benedictine tradition came to the Midwest in the 1850s when the Swiss Abbey of Einsiedeln sent two monks to Indiana to start a new foundation. Now, Meinrad Abbey is an active community of 90+ monks who pray, work, and live together. Tours of the beautiful grounds, historic buildings, and artifacts are available at reception.

20. Lincoln State Park Beach

Lincoln State Park offers two scenic lakes, ten miles of hiking trails, campgrounds, cabins, and group cottages. The 1,747-acre park was established in 1932 as a memorial to Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks.

21. Holiday World

With sections depicting Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and the 4 th of July on any day, Holiday World in the town of Santa Clause has been voted the Cleanest Park in the World for more than a decade. Live shows with singing, dancing, and diving are held throughout the day.

I have never considered going to Indiana but your post certainly showed a lot of great sites and architecture….OK and food. Top of my list would be the Zaharokos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum for what else? A sundae! The Jasper Passenger train would be cool too.

Clocking in at just under five hours from Indy, Put-in-Bay is a tropical getaway in the middle of Lake Erie just off the shore of northern Ohio. You’ll take a ferry to the island and find live music, nightlife, great shopping and food, as well as plenty of things to keep you busy! Rent a golf cart to tour the island in style! 3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee may be known worldwide for cheese and beer but there’s so much more!  You can keep busy for several days exploring places like the  Harley-Davidson Museum , the  Milwaukee Public Market , and watching the famous wings open on the  Milwaukee Art Museum .  If you love a good festival – Milwaukee has lots and lots of them including the world’s largest music festival each summer.  The city has an endless amount of great food for all tastes, and don’t forget the beautiful views of Lake Michigan.  Take the time to explore some of the historic downtown neighborhoods and don’t leave without buying a bag of fresh cheese curds for your road trip home.

4. Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

5. Parke County, Indiana

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

6. Adventures On The Gorge – Lansing, West Virginia

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most impressive architectural feats in American history. One of the many daring activities offered through  Adventures On The Gorge  in Lansing, West Virginia is called “Bridge Walk”. You can literally walk along the catwalk beneath the third highest bridge in the U.S. It’s not for everyone, but an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers! During your stay at the adventure resort, you can zip line, climb trees, enjoy incredible sunsets, and of course – some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

7. St. Louis, Missouri

The Gateway to the West is more than just the country’s tallest national monument. (630 feet high, in case you were wondering – and yes, you can take a tram all the way up to the top.) Saint Louis is home to Forest Park, which is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and full of free attractions like the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and yes – the award winning Saint Louis Zoo, which is only one of two major zoos in the America with free admission. Enjoy a great meal on “The Hill” – the last still thriving Italian neighborhood in America and take your kids to City Museum – one of the most bizarre, yet incredible places in the midwest. Tour Budweiser, take a stroll at the Missouri Botanical Garden, or try some St. Louis style thin crust pizza or toasted ravioli! Yum!

8. Springfield, Illinois

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

9. Holland, Michigan

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

10. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets!

11. Owensboro, Kentucky

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. If you like the idea of watching local bands in a barn, taste testing bourbon, eating good barbecue, or catching catfish – you’ll love this place. Owensboro is also home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and music legend Bill Monroe. You can even tour his childhood home .

Travel Time: 3h 10m / 197 miles

12. Cincinnati, Ohio

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums – The American Sign Museum is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

13. Madison, Wisconsin

The state capital of Wisconsin is constantly ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S.  Madison is also a fun college town with lots of things to do – though its best to visit in the spring and summer months if you hate cold weather.  My favorite thing to do in Madison is the Dane County Farmer’s Market that wraps around the entire Capitol building. Patrons all walk in one direction to shop for fresh produce and local goods.  Of course, State Street is full of action – all seven blocks between downtown and the University of Wisconsin campus. You can find food (140 restaurants!) unique stores, and plenty of entertainment day or night.

Bill’s Advice:  Tour the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol, and enjoy some time relaxing near the water.  (You can ice skate in the winter months)  For a quirky stop – a short drive to Middleton will get you to the  National Mustard Museum !

14. Nashville, Tennessee

Music City USA has seen a major boom in recent years. Along with the treasures that have always made Nashville great, there are brand new attractions and businesses making it one of the hottest cities in the south.  For country music fans – the Hall of Fame is a great bet, along with a tour of the  Ryman Auditorium  and  Grand Ole Opry.   These days, Broadway is a happening street akin to Times Square in New York City.  Bars, live music, and plenty of good people watching.  Check out an exact replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and be sure to try some authentic Nashville Hot Chicken while you’re in town!

Bill’s Advice:  Nashville is great for a weekend but definitely plenty to do for an extended visit or vacation.  It’s also one of the most popular cities on the list – which means it’s going to be busy.  Brace yourself for crazy traffic, higher than average prices to park your car downtown, and lots of people.  To save a bit of money, consider staying in one of the many communities that surround Nashville or out near the airport.  If you’re a country music fan – the George Jones Museum is a must! If not, you can still check out the rooftop bar on the fourth floor with great views of the river. 

Travel Time: 4h 10m / 288 miles

15. Door County, Wisconsin

One of the prettiest destinations in all of the midwest is Door County, Wisconsin. With its welcoming small communities, abundance of outdoor adventure, and of course – cherries galore – it makes for a perfect road trip. Be sure to check out the goats walking atop the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay, take a sunset cruise from Fish Creek to capture some beautiful photos, and of course if your timing is right – pick some fresh cherries in one of the many orchards in the area.

Bill’s Advice: Be sure to pop into the Wisconsin Visitors Center and pick up a cheese map! You’ll find every location for fresh cheese and cheese curds all of the state. It’s fantastic!

16. Louisville, Kentucky

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

17. Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

Talk about getting your bang for the buck – how often do you get four destinations packed into a single stop?  The Quad Cities is made up of five towns that share the Illinois-Iowa border.  (Yes, “quad” makes no sense as there are five and not four – but believe me, they know.)  It’s best known as the world headquarters for John Deere, and visitors can tour multiple historical spots that tell the story of the famous company.  Take a quick side trip up to LeClaire on the Iowa side to see where the show American Pickers began.

Bill’s Advice:  Try some Whitey’s Ice Cream while you’re in the region because it’s amazing!  It is seriously so good that it’s the first thing I want to do when I pass through the region.  I’ve interviewed the family that owns it – and they’re very nice!

18. Fort Wayne, Indiana

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

19. Indiana Dunes National Park

So let’s be honest, Indiana isn’t exactly a great place to live if you crave frequent road trips to the ocean. Florida? California? Better save some money for gas. However, it’s an easy trip to some of the beaches along beautiful Lake Michigan. Often underrated are the northern beaches of the midwest which are often less crowded, cleaner, and have sunsets that are just as beautiful. You can sit back and relax, rent a paddle board or kayak and watch your kids burn off energy running up and down the impressive sand dunes.

20. Columbus, Ohio

Columbus, known to locals as “C-Bus” is the capitol city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

From March to October, Lucas Oil Raceway's oval and dragstrip are alive with racing action. See the world's largest drag race, the U.S. Nationals, over Labor Day weekend, NASCAR's Kroger SpeedFest in July and the USAC Sprint Car and ARCA Racing Series throughout the year. Experience an outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment phenomenon, Metropolis, with regular live music performances and a Rave theater. For a more relaxing vibe, try shopping in quaint downtown Danville, pick some produce at Beasley's Orchard & Gardens or sample some of the 50 varieties of wine handcrafted at Chateau Thomas Winery.

Nashville/Brown County

Whether it's an excursion to downtown Nashville with all its eclectic shops and art galleries, a mountain bike ride or a trip on a zip line, you can find it here. Brown County State Park is the state's largest with 16,000 acres of trails, forests, shelters, campgrounds, lakes, a nature center and abundant recreational options. The world's oldest, continuously running bluegrass festival, the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, takes place here each June and the Melchior Marionette Theatre calls the area home. And nestled in the mature forests of the area is Getaway Brown County , a series of homey cabins with an onsite trail along a series of small bluffs. These nature-inspired escapes come with everything you need and (nothing you don’t) so you can disconnect from the noise and reconnect to nature.

Santa Claus

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari was the world's first theme park and still has plenty of thrills for the whole family. The park's wooden coasters are consistently voted near the top and the relatively recent opening of Splashin' Safari provides lots of family water rides, action rivers and wave pools. Known for its cleanliness, the park provides free soft drinks, sunscreen, inner tubes and parking in a non-smoking environment. In addition, the world's only Santa Claus Post Office resides here and still receives--and answers--more than 12,000 children's letters each holiday season.

Shelbyville

Put your chips on the table at Indiana Live! Casino or pick your lucky horse at adjacent Indiana Downs. In addition to the table games, you can also bet on finding great eats at the casino's Maker's Mark Bourbon House & Lounge, the Live! Market Buffet and Deli or NASCAR Sports Grille. Spend some of your winnings seeing a true vaudeville show at the BC Supper Club. Come for lunch or dinner and experience a show full of music, dance and comedy.

Lafayette/West Lafayette

Home of Purdue University, West Lafayette has a thriving arts community and a healthy embrace of the region's history. The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette … take in a concert at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Explore the country's largest collection of Amelia Earhart memorabilia and marvel at the Purdue Marching Band's world&'s largest drum! Travel back in time to see how the area's woodlands, wetlands and prairie helped shape life at Historic Prophetstown and the Living History Center and how Native Americans fought to unite against the white settlers at the Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum. And for something truly unique, visit Wolf Park. Learn about wolf behavior and watch them interact with the park's other residents, like foxes, coyote and bison. Be sure to take part in a Wolf Howl, offered every Saturday night, May-November.

Cheer, cheer, for old Notre Dame with a trip north to South Bend Mishawaka. As the home to Notre Dame University a tour of the campus with legendary landmarks like the Golden Dome, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and the Notre Dame Football Stadium is a must. The food scene is South Bend has spawned a Foodie Trail with restaurants singled out by Midwest Living. Three historic museums are on one campus with the Studebaker National Museum, The History Museum, and the Oliver Mansion. You'll want to satisfy your sweet tooth at The South Bend Chocolate Company (they a location is in Indy, but they're based in their namesake). Adventurous types can paddle down the East Race Waterway, the first man-made whitewater rafting course in North America that runs through the heart of the city.

Zionsville/Boone County

Zionsville's brick streets and buildings may have a quaint, yesteryear appeal, but you'll find no shortage of trendy boutique shops and cutting-edge restaurants in the village. Pack a picnic and visit Lincoln Park where Abraham Lincoln stopped to visit in 1861 on his way to Washington, D.C. to be inaugurated. If you plan to eat out, visit The Friendly Tavern for their famous wings and fried pork tenderloin sandwiches.  During the summer months visit the Zionsville Farmers Market from late July to late September and support local Indiana farmers and artists.

Hoops rule in Indiana and New Castle feeds the madness as home to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Thousands of artifacts tell the story of the Hoosier State's proud tradition from its inception with peach baskets to present day championships.

Fountain City 

Visit the new interpretive center and the adjoining  Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site . The Interpretive center opened in December 2016 and has already been highlighted by Smithsonian Magazine as one of the 12 best new museums to visit.

Spartanburg

Travel to Spartanburg to visit the  Union Literary Institute . It was established in 1846 to provide higher education to people of color. Notable alumni include Hiram Revels, who was the first black Senator in Congress.

10 Exciting Weekend Road Trips From Indianapolis, Indiana

Smack dab in America’s Heartland, Indianapolis’ central locale to five different states and local destinations offers endless weekend road trip possibilities.

As a city, Indianapolis has a lot going on. Home to a thriving sports and outdoor-loving culture, top things to do include experiencing the epic Indy 500, catching a Colts game at the Lucas Oil Stadium, and exploring the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. The city’s food and bar scene is poppin’, where fried and meaty dishes are almost always served alongside a cold craft brew.

But when boredom strikes, as it inevitably does, Indianapolis has some pretty exciting weekend road trips that can cure any case of the travel itch. The state is nicknamed the “Crossroads of America” afterall, thanks to its unique location at the intersection of four Interstate Highways. That means it’s all too easy to escape the bustle of the city when needed.

So the next time you’re feeling the urge to escape, here’s a list of the best weekend road trips from Indianapolis.

1. Indiana Dunes National Park

For a bit of fresh air, head on over to Indiana Dunes National Park , a protected sand dune ecosystem along the southern tip of Lake Michigan. The park has about 50 miles of hiking trails that meander through 15,000 acres of protected wetlands, flowering prairies, and forests. In the summer many come to camp out and enjoy the beach, where on a clear day you can catch sight of the Chicago skyline.

If the national park’s Dunewood Campground is full, the neighboring Indiana Dunes State Park offers more camping and recreation opportunities. The state park portion of Indiana’s dunes is also where you’ll find the famous 3 Dunes Challenge, a short but surprisingly tough hike that takes you up and over the area’s three tallest sand dunes.

2. Fort Wayne, Indiana

As Indiana’s second-largest city, Fort Wayne promises a fun and convenient weekend getaway. This northeastern destination, boasts numerous green spaces, waterways, and an extensive network of walking and bike paths, including the beautiful Promenade Park . Other noteworthy attractions include the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, botanical gardens, and the children’s zoo. Not to mention, no trip is complete without stopping by the historic Old Fort Wayne , a military stockade dating back to 1794.

As evening falls, consider booking a stay at The Bradley , an elegant boutique hotel designed by Fort Wayne native Barbara Bradley Baekgaard, co-founder of the famous designer Vera Bradley. The Landing, a haven for foodies, is conveniently within walking distance away along the city’s historic West Columbia Street.

3. Chicago, Illinois

With one of the country’s largest cities right at your fingertips, there are infinite ways to spend a weekend trip to Chicago. If spending time out and about is more your speed, venture to Millennium Park, where you can snap photos of the famous Cloud Gate or Navy Pier for family-friendly fun.

And, of course, indulging in the Windy City’s famous eats is an attraction in and of itself. So strap on your bibs and prepare to feast on deep-dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs, and mile-high Italian beef sandwiches — shout out to Lou Malnati’s , Portillo’s , and Al’s Italian Beef , respectively.

4. Bloomington, Indiana

Bloomington is a vibrant college town through and through, thanks to the sprawling and well-manicured campus of Indiana University that calls the city home. The downtown district is walkable, making the shops and restaurants of Kirkwood Avenue and The Square easy to explore. And on Saturday mornings, pick up locally grown and made fares at the ​​ Community Farmers’ Market .

Just outside Bloomington lies Hoosier National Forest and McCormick’s Creek State Park, where a cascading waterfall attracts thousands of visitors yearly. More outdoor fun can be found on the shores of nearby Lake Monroe and at highly-rated golf courses like The Pfau Course.

5. Saugatuck, Michigan

Just north of Indiana’s border with Michigan lies the quaint beach town of Saugatuck. This charming coastal destination is often compared to Cape Cod and is an excellent place to soak up sunshine on the famous Oval Beach .

Aside from its Lake Michigan beaches, the town is known for its antique shops, mom-and-pop eateries, and artistic atmosphere. So much so that Saugatch considers itself “The Great Art-Doors” due to its many art galleries and beautiful surroundings. During your visit, be sure to make time for the Saugatuck Dunes State Park for 200-foot tall dunes and a hike to the top of Mount Baldhead for lake views.

6. Turkey Run State Park, Indiana

Indiana’s Turkey Run State Park is famous for dramatic canyons and towering cliffs. Hikers will appreciate the 14 miles of exciting trails that take you up vertical canyon climbs, through lush forest, and past historic landmarks like the covered bridge. Plus, the idyllic Sugar Creek passes through the park grounds where you can tube, kayak, and more. The park grounds also feature an Olympic-size swimming pool, numerous picnic pavilions, and an informational nature center.

Weekend warriors who wish to stay immersed in the great outdoors can book a rustic cabin rental or campsite with electric hookups and modern bathroom facilities. The Turkey Run Inn within the park boundaries is another option and is a beautiful redbrick lodge that provides a romantic place to stay.

7. Louisville, Kentucky

Get out of the Midwest with a road trip to the only southern destination on this list — Louisville, Kentucky! And we can’t forget the excitement of the the Kentucky Derby, an event traditionally held in May. However, visitors can experience the derby any time of year with a visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum and the historic Churchill Downs racetrack.

Other classic ways to experience the city are with a stroll across the iconic Big Four Bridge or a steamboat cruise on the Belle of Louisville. Treating yourself to Louisville’s local flavor is also a must. Essential eats include the fried chicken at The Eagle , a BBQ platter from Feast BBQ , and the iconic Kentucky Hot Brown from its birthplace, The Brown Hotel .

This vibrant college town often tops the charts as one of America’s top party schools, and fosters a lively nightlife, particularly in the Short North Arts District . Or get your drink on with a distillery tour at the Middle West Spirit’s Service Bar and a trip down the Columbus Ale Trail.

During daylight hours, some of the best things to do in Columbus are the Columbus Zoo and the Columbus Museum of Art . Packing a picnic for The Scioto Mile, a stretch of greenery along the passing river, is another Columbus tradition. It has plenty to keep outdoor lovers busy with popular pastimes like mountain biking and hiking as well as two little lakes where you can take a dip. And for the kiddos, the park also has a swimming pool and playground.

The best way to soak up the beauty of Brown County State Park is by camping. There are three modern campsites to choose from with sites that are RV friendly. Or skip packing the camping gear altogether and opt for a stay in the park’s outdoorsy Abe Martin Lodge .

10. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A Southern Indiana Road Trip Itinerary Perfect for Families

Our family loves our road trips  ( like our road trip to Florida last year ) so when planning this year’s road trip w e decided to keep it somewhat close. Inspired by my article for Chicago Parent Magazine , we decided to take a road trip through Southern Indiana with stops at Santa Claus, French Lick, and Bloomington. What a great time! We told Santa our wishlists for Christmas, visited a theme park (and ate all the food), visited the “8th wonder of the world” while playing a game of chess, gave the sweetest elephant a bath, learned about Tibetan culture, and so much more! We had such wonderful memories visiting the Hoosier State! Here are some highlights of our Southern Indiana road trip.

Pit Stop: Lafayette, West Lafayette area

In order to keep the kids happy (and to keep us parents sane) we always break up the trip with a stop. For this trip, the Lafayette, West Lafayette area, home of Purdue University was about halfway in between. We stopped by the area on our last trip and decided to visit again this time with a stop in Dayton at Trish’s Red Bird Cafe. We felt right at home here! Must tries include the BBQ pork nachos, cinnamon rolls, and beignets. Stay tuned for all the yummy goodness!

Stop 1: Santa Claus, Indiana

The spirit of St. Nick is alive and well in the small town of Santa Claus, Indiana. Tons of family fun to be experienced in this small corner of southern Indiana.

Things to Do:

• Ride any of the holiday-themed rides at Holiday World . From mild to wild rides, there is something for everyone. For foodies, they have Dole Whip. (Enough said.)
• Splash away at the Splashin’ Safari adjacent to Holiday World. Again choose from mild to wild rides.
• Say hi to Santa (and take a pic) at The Christmas Store where he’s happy to listen to your wish lists. Afterward, scope out their selection of ornaments. Ask about getting it personalized for free.
• Take a scenic ride through the private woods and trail on horseback at Santa’s Stables. Those under 5, can spend one on one time with Foxy the Pony.
• Learn about the history of the town at Santa Claus Museum , then write Santa a letter. When December hits, Santa will write a response.
• Play arcade games at Frosty’s Fun Center , then treat yourself to ice cream afterward.
• Imagine yourself as a young Abraham Lincoln strolling through the forests and Living History Farm as you explore the Lincoln National Boyhood Memorial .

We adored this resort community steeped in history. Plus, it happens to be Larry Birdy’s hometown!

• Admire the beautiful atrium at West Baden Springs Hotel, considered to be the 8th wonder of the world.
• Take the historic train trolley between French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel.
• Enjoy a once in a lifetime experience of pampering an elephant with a spa and see other cool animals like kangaroos at Wilstem Ranch. They even offer cabins to stay.
• Go bowling at the retro style bowling alley at the French Lick Springs Hotel.
• Take surrey bike ride and explore the French Lick Resort property. It’s a lot harder than it looks.
• Try foot golf, a combination of soccer and golf at The Valley Links Course.
• Explore the beautiful Patoka Lake on a pontoon boat. You can even rent a pontoon with slide!

Stop 3: Bloomington, Indiana

This college town may be home to Indiana University, but also offers   tons of family-friendly things to do as well as a chance to learn about the Tibetan culture.

• Take a serene walk strolling through the grounds of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center.
• Walk through the iconic sample gates through Indiana University and through the woods and ponder how beautiful their campus is.
• Lie on a bed of nails or climb the two-story Grapevine climber at Wonder Lab Museum.

• Mother Bear’s has been a Bloomington institution dishing out pizzas for all. We enjoyed our deep dish (more like Detroit style) and fall in love with their special sauce!
• Ice cream, you all scream for ice cream – especially if it’s from Hartzell’s . Such unique delicious flavors (including some with booze!)
• Have a Tibetan feast at Anyetsang’s Little Tibet , one of the only Tibetan restaurants you’ll find around the Midwest. If it’s good enough for the Dalai Lama it’s good enough for you.
• Find your favorite donut at Rainbow Baker y, then be surprised that they were all vegan! Must try the lavender lemonade.

Fourwinds Lakeside Inn & Marina

We only had the pleasure of staying one night and immediately wished we had more time to explore.  The main highlight of this hotel is that it’s located right next to Monroe Lake. We loved waking up and walking out to our extra large balcony and then looking out the window to see the boats docked and the beauty of the lake. 

Stop 4: Indianapolis, Indiana

As we were making our way back to Chicago, we stopped by one of our favorite cities – Indianapolis. Our itinerary was pretty simple – enjoy the largest children’s museum in the world!

• Hang out at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and enjoy their outside area dedicated to sports. Cool off inside and be amazed at the treasures found in their new exhibit Ancient Treasures of Greece .
• Learn all about the Hoosier State at the Indiana State Museum.

• Children’s Museum of Indianapolis cafeteria where we enjoyed Greek food such as gyros and baklava.
• Since we are obsessed with poke we had some at Ali’i Poke.
• There are tons of option to eat in Indy. Here are a few from our past visits. 

JW Marriott Indianapolis

We absolutely love this downtown hotel with its fantastic location right by the baseball stadium, museums, and canal. Even the standard rooms are pretty spacious! We loved the state-of-the-art fitness center, one of the best we’ve seen, and the pool is always a hit with the kids.

We just loved Santa Claus, Indiana but didn’t get to experience Holiday World. I guess we will have to go back because it sounds amazing!

We have temporarily moved from the Chicago suburbs to Southern Indiana for work…. Coming back in a year and a half, but it’s been a while that we’ve been here. We heard about Holiday World, but we figured how great could an “amusement park” in the middle of Southern Indiana be? (I guess we could be considered amusement park connoisseurs/snobs) HOLY COW!!!!! THIS is an incredible theme park! The rides are simply amazing…. You want roller coasters? They have them in spades! Sure, there are areas that are somewhat dated, but that just makes the sections quaint. And then you get into splashing safari. MAN, OH MAN!! This is probably the greatest water park I’ve ever been to. They have so many flume and water coaster rides. They don’t have just one splash pad area, they have a number of them. They have a zero depth pool, they have a lazy river, they have lockers, and quick service food stops galore. Holiday World and Splashin Safari are very unique in the fact that they offer free parking, free soft drinks, and free sunscreen. Should you come down to Southern Indiana strictly for a weekend at this park? ABSOLUTELY !!!! There are area campgrounds and cabins, as well as a number of hotels popping up. You will not regret going out of your way to visit this theme park. In fact, you’ll probably want to come back again and again.

H ey there, Hoosiers! If you’re itching for a road trip but don’t want to spend half your weekend in the car, then you’re in luck. There are countless awesome road trips within 3 hours of Indianapolis just waiting to be explored, and I’ve enjoyed all of these weekend getaways or day trips numerous times! Whenever we don’t have a big vacation planned, we often head out from the city to see what can be discovered.

Whether you’re into outdoor adventures, quaint small towns, or big-city attractions, there’s something for everyone within a short drive from the Circle City. From the stunning natural beauty of Brown County State Park to the bustling streets of Chicago (a city that I never get tired of visiting) , the possibilities for a weekend getaway are endless.

You can hit up iconic landmarks like the Indiana Dunes or immerse yourself in the charming atmosphere of small towns like one of my favorites, Columbus, Indiana. Brown County State Park, less than an hour’s drive from Indianapolis, is a gem for families seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation. Known as the “Little Smokies” because of its rolling hills, this park dazzles with its vast expanses of wooded terrain, vibrant foliage, especially in the fall, and scenic vistas that are a photographer’s dream.

It’s a terrific choice for outdoor enthusiasts, offering miles of hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, and peaceful spots for picnicking. The park also has a lovely Inn (with a small indoor waterpark!) , making it an ideal retreat for a weekend getaway. Its proximity to Nashville, Indiana, with its charming art galleries and quaint shops, adds another layer of appeal, making Brown County State Park a terrific road trip destination well within three hours of Indianapolis.

A few things we love to do ( aside from hiking and shopping of course ) when we visit Brown County are visit Hard Truth Hills and Bear Wallow Distillery for distillery tastings, and catch a show at the Brown County Playhouse !

2. Indiana Dunes National Park

Indiana Dunes National Park, located just over two hours from Indianapolis, is a favorite road trip destination for nature lovers and beach enthusiasts. This unique landscape, where towering sand dunes meet the shores of Lake Michigan, provides a stunning backdrop for a variety of outdoor activities.

You can explore over 50 miles of trails through diverse habitats, enjoy sunbathing and swimming on the park’s beautiful beaches ( it’s always amazing to me how these gorgeous beaches are in Indiana! ), or engage in bird watching and photography. Plus there is fantastic hiking if you enjoy that.

With its easy accessibility and charming nearby communities like Valparaiso or Michigan City offering delightful dining and shopping options, Indiana Dunes National Park stands out as a must-visit road trip destination within a three-hour drive of Indianapolis.

3. Turkey Run State Park

Turkey Run State Park is the park that I grew up exploring. We often met my grandparents here for picnics and hiking. In conjunction with nearby Shades State Park, Turkey Run is one of my favorite places in Indiana to hike .

Some of the trails involve ladders ( always cool as a kid ), canyons, bridges, and more – so quite a few unique features are perfect for a bit of a challenge. There are also picnic areas, a lovely Inn, a swimming pool, and playgrounds. Plus, it’s situated along the Sugar Creek River and such a fun place to kayak or canoe in the warmer weather.

So for this one, pack your cooler full of a delicious lunch and head over to the park for a day of exploration and enjoying nature.

Historic Towns and Cultural Gems

Next, let’s visit some of the wonderful towns with strong history and culture within a short drive from Indianapolis. First up is Madison, Indiana, a picturesque town along the Ohio River, renowned for its well-preserved 19th-century architecture and vibrant cultural scene.

Next, we turn to Columbus, a hidden architectural gem, where modern design seamlessly blends with historical charm. It’s one of my favorite spots for a day trip from Indy – I never get tired of visiting. And finally, French Lick, known for its historic resorts and scenic railway, offers a unique glimpse into Indiana’s luxurious past. Each of these towns presents a unique journey through time, combining the allure of history with the vibrancy of modern-day culture.

4. Madison, Indiana

Madison, Indiana, just about a two-hour drive from Indianapolis, is a must-visit for its charming blend of history and natural beauty. This riverfront town offers gorgeous views and plenty of activities.

From strolling along the scenic Ohio Riverwalk to exploring the vibrant Main Street lined with unique shops and cozy cafes it’s a perfect little weekend getaway. Don’t miss the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site as well as Clifty Falls State Park for a mix of historical exploration and outdoor adventure.

I’ve enjoyed more than one visit to Madison either with my family or girlfriends – it’s the perfect girlfriend’s getaway thanks to the shopping, wineries, and quaint atmosphere.

On the list of my favorite day trips from Indianapolis is Columbus Indiana. This interesting and unique town is less than an hour from Indy, yet with its world-renowned architecture and adorable downtown, feels like a world away.

There are so many fun things to do in Columbus , but you’ll definitely want to participate in some type of architecture tour to fully appreciate the city. There are also several delicious restaurants and coffee shops so plan on exploring those. If your kiddos are along, don’t miss the KidsCommons as well as The Commons downtown.

My favorite place to stay in Columbus is the Hotel Indigo – with a great location and fun atmosphere, it’s always a winner.

6. French Lick, Indiana

French Lick, located just over two hours from Indianapolis, is a delightful destination for anyone looking for a blend of relaxation and entertainment. Famous for its historic resorts, including the grand French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs Hotel the town offers luxurious spa experiences and world-class golf courses.

The French Lick Scenic Railway is a unique attraction, and if your kids are train lovers, they will enjoy scenic tours through the Hoosier National Forest. With activities like horseback riding and hiking trails, plus the nearby Patoka Lake for water-based adventures ( and a tasty winery ), French Lick is an ideal spot for a rejuvenating escape or an action-packed family weekend.

We’ve been down there many times, and I’m just waiting for the perfect winter to head down to enjoy all the Christmas activities. As beautiful as the hotels are, I can only imagine how stunning they are decorated for the holidays.

Thrills and Fun: Top Amusement Parks Near Indianapolis

If you are looking for exhilarating rides and family-friendly entertainment there are several theme parks within a few hours of Indianapolis. These amusement parks, both of which I’ve visited often, promise a day full of excitement and memorable moments.

I’ll be spotlighting Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana, known for its free soft drinks and sunscreen, and Kings Island near Cincinnati, Ohio, famous for its record-breaking roller coasters. Both parks offer thrilling rides, waterpark fun, and attractions suitable for all ages, making them perfect destinations for a family day out or an adventurous weekend getaway.

7. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari, Santa Claus

For several years when the kids were younger, we made an annual summer trip to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari in Santa Claus, Indiana. It took us just under three hours, so to have a full day at the park, we almost always got a hotel room in nearby Tell City, Indiana.

This park is chock full of amazing roller coasters and the holiday themes for each land is a ton of fun. I also really like the water park. We’d typically spend the morning on the coasters and other rides and then hit the waterpark in the afternoon when the hot Indiana summer sun started to really blaze overhead.

Santa Claus, Indiana is another city on my list of places I’d like to visit during the Christmas season. The park will be closed, but can you think of a better Christmas town to visit than Santa Claus?

8. Kings Island, Mason, OH

Kings Island is the theme park I grew up going to. I’ve spent many a fun summer day riding the rides and enjoying the atmosphere. It’s the park that all the high school kids go to the day after prom as it’s just under two hours away, so totally doable as a day trip.

However, nearby Cincinnati is a really fun town with plenty of things to do year-round , so these days I prefer to visit Kings Island as part of a weekend getaway. Kings Island is owned by Cedar Fair, so if you’ve been to any other of their parks you know how awesome they are!

Insider tip: If you love roller coasters, plan a little getaway in Ohio and spend a day at Kings Island near Cincinnati, and then drive up to Sandusky to spend a day at Cedar Point . You could add a stop in Columbus on the way and have a lovely little summer vacay!

Urban Adventures: Exciting City Getaways Close to Indianapolis

Indy is a fun city to explore in its own right, but if you feel like getting out of town, there are several other fantastic cities within two to three hours.

From the riverside location of Louisville to the big city of Chicago to the smaller city charms of Fort Wayne, you can easily enjoy a fun day trip or overnight to any of these terrific Midwest locations.

9. Louisville, Kentucky – Horses, bourbon, and more!

Louisville, Kentucky, is an excellent city to visit within just a two-hour drive from Indianapolis, offering a vibrant mix of culture, history, and entertainment. This dynamic city is famed for the iconic Kentucky Derby, but its appeal extends year-round with a bustling arts scene, beautiful parks, and renowned food culture, especially its delicious take on Southern cuisine and unique bourbon.

When we visit, in addition to the typical tourist sites, we always spend a little time exploring the quirky neighborhoods, indulging in good food and coffee ( Please & Thank You is my personal favorite ), and thrift shopping.

You should plan on exploring the historic Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum , wander through the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory , or enjoy a stroll along the scenic Waterfront Park. For families, the Louisville Zoo and the Kentucky Science Center are huge hits. Whether you’re a sports fan, a food enthusiast, or a culture seeker, Louisville has a diverse array of attractions that make it a worthwhile destination for a road trip from Indianapolis.

Consider a history and food tour like this highly-rated one in NULU to experience Louisville in a whole new way. My teens LOVE taking food tours, so it’s a great option for older kids.

10. Fort Wayne, Indiana – Midwestern charm

Fort Wayne is one of my favorite cities within a few hours of Indianapolis. It takes under two hours ( closer to an hour and a half for me since I live on the north side of Indianapolis ), and we always have a fabulous time whether we visit for a day or a weekend.

Through the years, we’ve enjoyed festivals ( the Johnny Appleseed is a favorite ), explored downtown, and watched a ball game at the wonderful Parkview Field baseball stadium . Other favorites include the zoo – it is a wonderful zoo to visit, for years we took the kids there for a day trip every fall, and the DeBrand chocolate factory tour. Science Central is pretty cool for kids too, while adults love the The Landing area for its unique restaurants and bars.

On your way to Fort Wayne, consider stopping for a few hours in Roanoke . We’ve done this several times, enjoying the quaint town and the super fun tastings at Two EE’s Winery.

I love staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites downtown – it has a terrific rooftop bar with a view of the Parkview Field Baseball Stadium – a really fun time on game days.

11. Chicago, Illinois – “The Windy City”

If you want a BIG city experience, then Chicago is the ideal road trip for you within three hours of Indianapolis. There are so many things to do in Chicago that you could easily spend a week exploring!

When you visit, plan on checking out at least one of the museums – The Museum of Science & Industry and Shedd Aquarium are our favorites although they are all pretty cool. Another fun thing to do is admire the city view from 360 Chicago – you can even step out on a glass floor dozens of stories above the street!

We’ve visited Chicago many times and done something different on every trip – it’s truly a place I never get tired of. If it’s your first visit, consider a Big Bus Tour as a great way to get a feel for some of the highlights of the city. Even though I’m pretty familiar with the area I still enjoy the tour as a way to get around and learn a little bit more about this terrific Midwestern city.

12. Marengo Cave, Marengo – head down under

The last time I visited Marengo Cave was actually on a field trip with my son . It was such a fascinating experience that I’ve been planning a trip back soon. The caves are kind of out in the middle of nowhere, so it was a lengthy bus ride, but when driving it would easily be within 3 hours of Indianapolis.

One of the best parts of visiting a cave is that the temperature is the same no matter what the weather is like outside – so this could be a great option on a rainy day or cold and dreary fall or spring weekend. Make sure to take a guided tour – the history of the caves is super interesting. There aren’t a lot of restaurants nearby so you might consider packing a lunch and enjoying a picnic outside the cave area.

13. Indiana Amish Country – crafts, home cooking, and family fun

Over the last few years, I’ve spent several weekends checking out all the amazing things to be found in the northern part of Indiana which is home to most of the state’s Amish community. Both Elkhart County and Shipshewana in LaGrange County have a large Amish population and therefore some pretty amazing opportunities for learning (and shopping!).

Plan on enjoying delicious homemade food, maybe checking out a concert in Shipshewana, and definitely plenty of shopping! If you want to learn a little bit more about the Amish in Indiana don’t miss Menno-Hof . It’s an educational and fun way to learn more about their history.

My favorite place to stay when visiting the Amish Country is the Hotel Elkhart in downtown Elkhart. It’s classy, comfortable, and has a fantastic location.

I believe that planning your stops is equally important. I like to look for rest areas with playgrounds or picnic spots for a quick stretch and play. For a longer trip, incorporating kid-friendly attractions along the route, like zoos or museums, can break the monotony of the drive.

Snack breaks should be healthy and mess-free, so pack a cooler . And, most importantly, staying flexible with your schedule allows for impromptu stops at interesting sights, making the journey part of the adventure and keeping everyone’s spirits high.

It’s also wise to have a roadside emergency kit on hand, complete with items like jumper cables, a flashlight, and basic tools. I always check to see if I’m due for a tire rotation or oil change before a road trip.

Next, plan your route in advance and be aware of the weather conditions. Use a reliable GPS for navigation but also have a physical map ( I love my Atlas! ) as a backup. Keep an eye on traffic updates to avoid delays or hazardous roads.
