Shaun Majumder brings The Love Tour to Halifax’s Spatz Theatre

By Jordan Parker

Posted Nov 19, 2022 12:58:00 PM.

A conversation with Canadian icon Shaun Majumder can run the gamut of topics in just 15 minutes. But there's always an under-current to his words.

Majumder thrives on making Canadians laugh, and he'll do so again in Halifax during The Love Tour on November 19.

A This Hour Has 22 Minutes alum who was raised in Burlington, Nfld., Majumder has been seen on Canadian screens for decades. He sees his current tour as a coming-together for audiences after a difficult period.

“This has just been so great and revitalizing. The venues are filled with life, energy, and people are feeling a normalcy,” said Majumder.

“Everyone is thankful and grateful to be in a theatre for a live show, packed shoulder-to-shoulder. We're all laughing, spitting, and coughing together, and enjoying ourselves.”

Majumder's jovial attitude and gregarious spirit shine through as he sheds light on COVID-19, something the nation grappled with – and still grapples with to this day.

“Human beings have been through a traumatic two years. Other cultures and areas have had it much worse. In this world, trauma needs relief and healing. Getting together and laughing is so important. Comedy is the combination or tragedy and time,” he said.

“Depending on the angle, there are certain topics about the pandemic that alienate people immediately or bring them together. It's a pretty nuanced topic to talk about on-stage, but we can all relate to certain experiences.”

During the course of the conversation with Majumder, he was happy to talk about anything and everything, a testament to his quick wit.

From the good form of Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray in his Nov 17 return from injury to Donald Trump's bid for the 2024 presidency, he had an interesting, funny take on current events.

He has loved bringing his takes on everything from his personal life to the world around him to the stage as well. He was headed to Halifax following a successful show in Pictou where he had a special guest come to see him.

“It was just a great show at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. (Former National Defence Minister) Peter MacKay showed up, which was so cool,” said Majumder.

“His wife, Nazanin Afshin-Jam was there with him, and she's doing amazing things for Iran. He's the prime minister that never became prime minister.”

Majumder is excited for his sold-out show at Halifax's stories Spatz Theatre, on a stage he's graced many times before.

“I love it so much. It's one of my favourite theatres. There's an intimate vibe, and we sell out there every time. This show run has been phenomenal,” he said.

“We've sold out every show on this tour. It's a testament to the fact people are hungry to get out, and for them to want to come to my show is humbling and crazy.”

Majumder has found himself busy as of late, co-starring on the popular Paramount+ series From, fronted by Harold Perrineau. It was shot right here in Nova Scotia as well.

He also did a stint on Hudson and Rex again this season, but he'll soon find himself back to Florida after this tour, and off to Costa Rica for a break with his family.

“It's funny, because I used the name, 'The Love Tour' to pull people in, but if people want all happiness, they'll be sorely disappointed,” he joked. “I should have called it 'The Resentment Tour.' There's definitely love sprinkled in.”

He speaks a lot about his family during this tour, and about fatherhood as well.

“I have to say the show is born of love. I have two kids, but it's definitely harder than I thought it would be,” he said with a laugh.

“I'll be putting my kids up for auction during the show. They're just too much work. We'll do it black-market, dark-web style right in the theatre.”

Majumder's massive selling speaking engagements have come with a beautiful sense of community as well. He's been raising money for Hurricane Fiona relief along the way.

“We mainly did it in Newfoundland, where there was so much devastation on the South Shore. For meet-and-greets and merch, it was $10 a photo or whatever people would donate, and it went directly into a pool. It went wherever people needed it most,” he said.

“In Newfoundland, over $10,000 went to Port Aux Basque to the Credit Union, so they could get the money to wherever it was needed most, and right away. In P.E.I., the money went to food banks. We'll be doing it here in Halifax as well.”

Majumder says seeing people come to his shows and enjoy a live performance has been nothing short of beautiful for him.

“You can just feel the energy. The world needs more of this right now. People are bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when they come. I understand the love for Netflix and chilling, but we're social creatures by nature,” he said.

“When we're brought together for a common focus – like watching some guy tell stories about how high his sperm count is – we're reminded about how important it is to be near each other more than ever.”

Majumder plays The Spatz Theatre on Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. There are a few single seats left .

Comedian Shaun Majumder brings The Love Tour to New Westminster Back to video

When: May 13, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Massey Theatre, New Westminster

Tickets and info: masseytheatre.com

The last time Shaun Majumder embarked on a standup tour he was feeling a much different vibe.

In 2019 things like authoritarianism, Donald Trump and white supremacy were front-and-centre when Majumder mounted The Hate Tour. That idea for an overarching theme to his show grew out of a tussle he had with online trolls back when Majumder was still a member of the cast of the CBC-TV show This Hour Has 22 Minutes .

“In 2016 during the election when I was working on 22 Minutes , I wrote this sketch it had to do with Donald Trump and all the stuff being talked about him being a white supremacist. So, I wrote this sketch called Beige Power and it unleashed the trolls online,” said Majumder over the phone from his Los Angeles home recently. “Then I thought I have to use this in my show and then I started developing this idea around The Hate Tour.”

Now a father to girls aged 2 1/2 and four months, Majumder admits his lens is a loft different these days as he readies to bring The Love Tour to New Westminster’s Massey Theatre on May 13 at 7:30 p.m.

“The Love Tour is all about having kids. It’s all about being a parent. It’s about coming out of this sh—y time,” said Majumder. “I’m writing around the theme of being a dad and love and light and not controversial. I’m not trying to kick up a stink. The only controversy may be with my wife, may be with my kids in the future when they watch the show later.”

The last two years has given Majumder plenty of time to study his family. When COVID-19 hit, Majumder and his wife, Shelby Fenner, packed up their infant daughter and drove from L.A. to Majumder’s tiny hometown of Burlington, N.L.

“They had gone zero cases … for four months straight and then the day I arrived Newfoundland gets one new COVID case and it’s my neighbour Kevin. He had come back from Alberta where he was working. He was fine,” said Majumder, who owns a home in Burlington, population about 350.

The trio stayed in Burlington for a year before packing up and moving to his wife’s hometown of Petoskey, Mich. While there they welcomed daughter No. 2.

Now freshly back in L.A., Majumder is writing and working on new projects, and looking forward to shooting Season 2 of the EPIX-TV series From. The series just wrapped its first season and should be available in Canada soon.

From the makers of Lost, From is a psychological drama about a town that doesn’t let people leave. Majumder, now a U.S. citizen, plays Father Khatri, the town priest, and the popular go-to guy for advice.

“I think so,” said Majumder when asked if he gives good advice. “I think I have a good ear. I’m a good listener.”

Remember listening? That seems like an old-time concept whose absence is duly noted in a noisy world where people are quick to anger and quick to cancel others. Comedians know that better than anyone.

“It’s always happened. People have (ticked) off people for years especially with comedy. But I don’t think it’s OK that the person who (ticked) off those people has to have their entire lives shut down and their entire career stopped,” said Majumder, adding: “Standup comedy … still needs to be a place where people are able to say what they are thinking and understand it is through the filter of standup comedy. You may hate them, and you may think this is the most offensive thing in the world, but I also think there needs to be a place for people to do that. The way it is now, though, it’s not going to happen. You can’t do that anymore and that kind of sucks.”

While he was still a cast member on This Hour Has 22 Minutes Majumder felt the long arm of the thought police in a very real way.

“I think it was one of the reasons why I left or why I was let go,” said Majumder, who was on the show from 2003-to-2018. “The producer who was the showrunner, to his credit, he had to deal with the CBC who is a public broadcaster who has to appease a lot more than a regular cable network because they are being publicly funded. There were some things I was really interested in as a writer and as a creator of pushing the envelope and trying to do those things. What is the purpose of comedy? Especially a political satire show, a social satire show. There was a lot of resistance and worry.

“Literally, I went in at one point and he said you can’t (tick) off the social justice warriors. And I went, ‘You’ve got to be f—king kidding me right now.’ I’m not saying be insensitive to groups but that can’t be the place from which we launch. That can’t be the foundation of a political satire show, worrying, first-and-foremost, about offending someone and then secondly being funny.

“I don’t know where the show is at now. It seems like it is doing really well, which I think is awesome,” added Majumder.

Right now Majumder is focusing on the future. He’s writing, pitching and making people laugh but most importantly he is parenting.

“I’m really excited about diving in and trying to understand and listen and be the good dad,” said Majumder. “It’s interesting being a dad to two girls, there is always these old-school tropes and stereotypes about how guy dads are, and I have no interest in any of that. I feel I am as much of a mom as I am a dad, although she is obviously another level of caregiver.

“As dad’s go, if dads could go into a mama kind of nurturing vibe, I think I play it well because I was raised by a pack of women in a small town in Newfoundland, so I was surrounded by female energy growing up. I’m very thankful for that.”

Canadian actor, comedian Shaun Majumder coming to Blyth

B LYTH – Canadian actor and comedian Shaun Majumder will perform at the Blyth Festival Theatre on April 12, bringing his stand-up comedic show, “Hardly Dead,” to rural Ontario.

Majumder spoke with Midwestern Newspapers about his upcoming show and his excitement about being back on the road performing stand-up comedy.

First order of business, however, Majumder laughed, “Now is it rutabaga or turnip, before I get into trouble? I know there’s a lot of divide going on in the world, and there’s political rivalries and whatnot, but this is the topic that I need to be most aware of coming into Blyth.”

All jokes aside, Majumder is looking forward to experiencing small-town Ontario.

“I just love rural. I’m a big fan of rural because I grew up rural,” he said. “I know the voice of rural, you know, and I just have a passion for rural towns and development in small places and culture in small places.”

Majumder said Hardly Dead is a show like no other, at least not like any show he’s done before. “My show is going to be like throwing a box of bullets in the fire; you just don’t know what’s coming.”

On the heels of his “Love Tour,” which was about having kids and the transition between “a couple who loves to party, travel and live the free life to then becoming slaves to our masters, namely two little girls, one named Mattis and one Eslyn,” Majumder said. “And now I’m coming out of that world and wanting to talk a little bit about, you know, I’m in an age where health and wellness has got to be top of mind. I’m talking about death; I’m talking about things to do before you die. I’m talking about the importance of being aware of it all.”

Majumder continued, saying, “When you’re not so aware of it when you’re younger, you know, you’re not consciously aware that someday this is going to be over; you do everything you can, you throw caution to the wind, and you don’t care. And as you get older, especially now that you have kids, it’s really important to be more aware of your health and wellness.

“But along the way, it’s very stressful to get out trying to keep up with everything and reading so many different stories from so many different influencers. Everybody’s an expert, right? So you have to kind of weed through what is good for you and what isn’t. And that’s quite stressful. You know what I mean? But you don’t want to be stressed out. So the point is to be relaxed, but you know, it’s really challenging.”

Majumder said this show will be slightly different from previous shows – this is straight stand-up comedy.

“I’m really excited to get up there and talk about exploring new things on stage,” said Majumder. “That’s the thing about a live show, which is so fun, because my show is never the same twice. Before I have done things that were, you know, using video playback and showing pictures and that, but this is just going to be me on stage talking for an hour plus, and it can be really intimate. And that’s what I love about this.”

Majumder is very impressed with the Blyth Festival Theatre and the Harvest Stage because they remind him of his hometown of Burlington, Newfoundland, and the work he has been doing there to attract tourism.

“More of that is needed,” he said of the Harvest Stage. “You know, it just engages people walking by. It really galvanizes the community ideally, you know, and I’m doing that in my own town in Burlington, Newfoundland, you know?

“The outdoor stage is a big thing that lives on and I think it’s so valuable.”

Majumder is currently filming for an episode in the latest Star Trek – Strange New Worlds. Although he can’t speak much about it, he can say that he is in episode seven of season three, “and all I can tell you is I play an alien that the Star Trek universe has never met before.”

The multi-talented entertainer is also working on a new album, which will be dropping later this year.

“This is going to be a comedy album, and it’s going to be a hybrid of live stand-up and sketch,” said Majumder. “Live sketch, like, sketch meaning almost like theatre of the mind, basically. And it’s innovative in the way that my live stand-up comes to life with actors; we live inside the bit as I’m telling the story. And then you’re inside the world that I’m describing. And then you go from the world back on stage, as I continue the story.”

Majumder’s website describes his career as follows:

“Majumder found early success as a stand-up comedian and host, landing his first gigs with YTV (Canada’s Nickelodeon) as a host/PJ for five years, along with CBC’s Just For Laughs comedy series. He continued to book small roles in film and TV, and in 2003, he joined the cast of CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes, where he spent 17 seasons.

“For the past 20-plus years, Shaun has found success on both sides of the border. A few noteworthy performances include his work as Detective Vik Mahajan in ABC’s critically-acclaimed crime drama Detroit 1-8-7. His role as Andrew Palmer on NBC’s The Firm starring alongside Josh Lucas and Juliette Lewis. As Hassan Numair on FOX’s 24. His comedy roles include starring in the sketch comedy series Cedric the Entertainer Presents, The Farrelly Brother’s Unhitched, ABC’s Married Not Dead, NBC’s Nevermind Nirvana, and CBC’s Hatching Matching and Dispatching.

“He most recently starred alongside Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Eion Bailey in the EPIX Sci-Fi/Horror series FROM as Father Khatri.

“Shaun resides in Los Angeles with his wife Shelby Fenner, his two daughters Mattis Maple and Eslyn Willow.”
