sausage tree safari camp

Sausage Tree far exceeded our expectations. Food, game drives, accommodations were all superb. I felt very comfortable during the entire stay. The guides and staff went out of their way to make our family feel at home.

sausage tree safari camp

An exceptional location with magnificent views, experiences and staff. You really feel like you’re visiting a long term friend’s house when you’re here, but you’re meeting some other friends (guests) too! The pool is exceptional, the food was incredible, the game drives were always more than expected!

sausage tree safari camp

Fantastic trackers Themba, Polite and Life who were like magicians conjuring animals from the bush and found us the big5 and more. The camp is very small with just 6 tents which gives it a nice relaxed atmosphere, and the other guests were all lovely. Our tent (no3/Elephant Shrew) was in front of a watering hole which had elephants visiting every day.

sausage tree safari camp

The overall experience is great. Staffs are taking good care of us and food are good as well. Really love the game drive experience , and have completed the checklist for big 5. Super nice to stay here !

sausage tree safari camp

What an amazing place, beautiful spot, incredible staff, wonderful food.. every detail thought of and yet super relaxed feel to the whole place. By far the best safari camp I have stayed at. Temba and Polite were the most brilliant guides/trackers.. learnt so much from them and so many great animal/bird sightings. I really hope to return.

We loved the intimacy of the Sausage Tree Safari Camp , the friendliness of the entire staff, the great quality of the food and the perfect location in the middle of the Balule Nature Reserve. A special thank you to Themba and Jimmy for the great morning and evening game drives. It was amazing how close we could get to the wildlife.

sausage tree safari camp

From the moment we arrived we were well looked after and felt part of the Sausage Tree family. All the staff were outstanding, thoughtful and expert. The whole experience was very comfortable and relaxing, the facilities have been upgraded since our last visit. The game drives were outstanding, we learned so much from our expert guides, Themba and Jimmy - we saw 4 of the Big Five and experienced amazing encounters with lion and buffalo. We love the size of Sausage Tree, a maximum of 10 guests in total, so it’s easy to make new friends from other parts of the world, and enjoy a private experience as a couple too.

Safari Seasons

Sausage Tree Camp is open throughout the best game viewing months of April to November. The season begins as soon as the rains are over. The vegetation is lush at this time but as the season progresses the bush dries out, the game gathers and sightings improve.

Low Season 1 April to 31 May

Visiting the Lower Zambezi after the rains is absolutely stunning, the skies are clear and the mountains seem so near. The migratory birds remain in plumage and are preparing to move on. The dense vegetation forces the lions to use the roads and the wild dog are readily seen in the open plains. April is very hot averaging mid to high 30’s (Celsius), but by late May the temperatures will have dropped to the mid 20’s (Celsius). This year we had fantastic leopard sightings in both April and May.

High Season 1 June to 31 October

This really is the very best time of the year in the Lower Zambezi National Park. The game viewing is phenomenal and the early season temperatures are near perfect! This is also a busy time to be in the camp, usually 14 or more guests every night. The Sausage Tree (Africana Kigelia) starts to flower, as does the flame creeper/burning bush (Chifungulu) which transforms the green vegetation to a bright red. Leopard and lion sightings are a daily occurrence, as are the elephant who wander through camp. Later on in the season things really start to heat up in terms of weather as well as game viewing and fishing. Most waterholes have dried up, so game is more often seen on the river banks and islands. Bird watching is also spectacular with summer migrating birds returning - the carmine bee eaters really put on a show along the riverbanks. October is the hottest month with a feeling of build up to the rains.

Low Season 1 November to 30 November

When the first rains come, usually in November, the impala give birth, as do the warthogs and many other species. For any avid fisherman, this is probably the best time to be here.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp

A private lodge in the Balule Game Reserve – part of the Greater Kruger National Park

Safari – a Swahili word used originally in early East African times means “ long-journey ”. Our game drives are journeys where we experience through all our senses ... the sights and sounds of the vast surrounds from our private and unique Camp. What you might not see during the day, you could hear at night.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp is situated in the Balule Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger Park and sanctuary to Africa’s Famous Big Five. With almost 3000 ha of traversing you can look forward to a true safari experience of wilderness and undisturbed biodiversity.

Uniquely positioned in the bush between Marula and Acacia trees with it’s own special view above and beyond the thorn trees, our waterhole, the Olifants River and the majestic Drakensburg range on the horizon, Sausage Tree Safari Camp is a place not easily forgotten!

Sausage Tree Safari Camp luxury tented accommodation

Safari Tents - Remember the old-style safari and sleeping under canvas? Well there truly is nothing like it! The sounds of the night are closer, the smells are stronger, and the feeling of actually being in the bush is so much more intense. Our African safari-styled tents are nestled in between Marula, Knobthorn Acacia and Sausage Trees and overlook a dry river bed, the bush and the Northern Drakensberg Mountains. Each tent is spacious and built in an elevated position with it’s own special view.

The tents are fully furnished and have their own private deck and ensuite bathroom with a bath and outdoor shower. Inverter or Eco based Air-conditioners are fitted in each tent ensuring that you stay cool during those warm summer nights ... and can even be set to warm during those colder nights in winter. Insect gauze on all the windows and doors keep the insects outside where they belong.

Set in the Balule Nature Reserve , which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park, Sausage Tree Safari Camp is not only surrounded by the African wilderness, but also offers spectacular views of the Northern Drakensberg Mountains. This family-owned and operated safari camp prides itself on a warm atmosphere and African safari-styled tented accommodation.

Each morning and late afternoon, an experienced and professional guide will take you on a safari game drive through thick bush and along open plains in search of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) as well as general game species such as giraffe, zebra, warthog, kudu and impala. During the drives there is a lot of emphasis on giving information on everything that is encountered – whether your interest is birding, insects, plants and trees, your guide will happily share his knowledge with you!

Breakfast and lunch is served on an open deck with views of the bush and a water hole frequented by a variety of resident animals. Dinner is mostly served under the stars, in front of the fire in the boma. The camp has a lounge for those lazy siesta’s, and a cosy bar complete with a variety of first class South African wines. The deck pool becomes a remedy for those hot summer days. Should dinner be eaten on the deck on those calm, bright evenings, the fire place is lit adding some romance to those magical African nights.

Game Drives

Experience 360 degree panoramic views while in search for the Big 5 ...

Sunrise and sunset safari’s in open 4×4 vehicles are the highlights of the day, with our professional field guides visitors can go in search of some of Africa’s famous variety of mammal and bird life, such as giraffe, zebra, African fish eagles, vultures and the notorious Big 5. Our rangers can even focus on some of the less noticeable aspects of the bush such as the Rhinoceros Beetle, how to make rope from a Raisin Bush or spend a while becoming aquainted with termites and their mounds.

The Cuisine

Their distinguished Chef Orlando was born in Chokwe, Mozambique, and moved to South Africa with his mother and two sisters when he was nine years old to escape the troubled period Mozambique was experiencing at the time. He was schooled in Bushbuckridge and spent all of his school holidays working and learning in a Lodge kitchen to earn his pocket money. This was where his passion for the culinary arts began. After matriculating, he attended a chef’s training course where he successfully received his qualification. His passion is ongoing and evident in the deliciously different, delectable cuisine he now shares with our guests at Sausage Tree. He is at present compiling his own book of African recipes.

Other than enjoying the amazing Safari cuisine from Orlando’s kitchen, his very special seeded bran rusks will definitely have you looking forward to your first cup of coffee at sunrise ... before your exciting game drive.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Sebastian is Orlando’s right hand in the kitchen and makes a marvelous peanut butter that will melt in your mouth.. absolutely wonderful with breakfast on a fresh piece of toast! The above mentioned Rusks and Peanut Butter can be purchased at the lodge for those who would like to take a souvenir of their safari culinary experience home with them.

Exquisite dining under the stars at Sausage Tree Safari Camp

The Big 5 Reserve

Balule Nature Reserve was established by a group of like-minded private landowners in the early 1990s. From the start, their objective was to create a larger open system with no fences to hinder animal movement thus creating a much healthier habitat for fauna and flora.

The Reserve has since grown from the initial 11,000 ha to 40,000 ha, approximately 150 km of fences have been removed, and it consists of both private and corporate properties. In 2004, the eastern boundary fence was removed and Balule was officially incorporated into the Greater Kruger National Park (established in 1898).

Balule is mostly made up of mixed Acacia and Combretum woodlands, which sustain 94 mammal, 280 bird, 72 reptile and 128 tree species, not to mention the insect, fish, amphibian and other plant species.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp is proud to be part of this massive undertaking, and will continue to help protect and support this very special conservation area for future generations. It is in these amazing wilderness areas where a traveller can still find an authentic safari experience.

What we love about sausage tree camp.

Overlooking a quiet artery of the Zambezi, the serene location perfectly reflects the pace of Sausage Tree Camp. As much as it’s a place to encounter Zambian wildlife, it’s a place to unwind and recharge with someone special. We recommend combining Sausage Tree Camp with a few days at Sandibe in the Okavango Delta , and a stop-off in Zimbabwe to view mighty Victoria Falls .

Getting to Sausage Tree Camp

To reach Sausage Tree Camp, guests can fly into one of three airports: Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (Livingstone), Mfuwe International Airport, or Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka) via Johannesburg.

Each airport is connected to the Jeki airstrip, which is located in the middle of the Lower Zambezi National Park. From here, it’s a one-hour game drive to Sausage Tree Camp. We recommend flying to Lusaka via light aircraft. At just 30 minutes, it’s the shortest transfer time—both other airports take around one hour and 45 minutes.

2 Bedroom Family Tent

Sausage Tree Camp accommodations

Sausage Tree Camp comprises eight luxury tented suites, with one (Kigelia House) being a two-bedroom suite for groups or families. The tents are decorated in a calming, minimalist style, accented by natural materials such as timber and canvas.

Each of the suites has spectacular river views, with an expansive decking area from which to enjoy the wildlife of the Zambezi. The seven single suites feature a king-size bed overlooking an elegant private pool, while open-air showers allow you to bathe surrounded by the sounds of the wild.

Kigelia House, named after the sausage trees that envelope the lodge, has a generous open-plan living area, which divides two master bedrooms. All rooms are served by a private Muchinda (butler), elevating the luxury experience.

The property is unfenced, with the suites set apart to allow the passage of wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see the occasional elephant wandering through the camp on its way to the river.

Sausage Tree Camp amenities

The main communal deck area offers wide-angle views of the Zambezi; its cushioned seating is the perfect place to relax between activities. As night falls over the water, settle down in the open-air dining space for a romantic meal.

Sausage Tree safari camp Zambia prides itself on its gourmet dining, sourcing the freshest local ingredients for its fusion cuisine. Lunch and dinner can be served in the privacy of your lodge.

An 80-foot lap pool means you don’t have to skip a workout. Wi-Fi is available in the lodge.  All rooms gave power 24 hours a day and hot water. The property has 24-hour security, a laundry service, and an onsite library.

Sausage Tree Camp activities

Game drives: While the tranquil waterways are the main draw of Lower Zambezi National Park, there’s still plenty of dry land to explore within its one-million-acre boundary. Much of the larger game live along the valley floor close to the river, so game drives allow guests to see a range of wildlife in a short amount of time. We love that guests are guaranteed a guide and vehicle; they are available both during the day and at night.

The landscape is strikingly lush, fed by the river and the wetlands close to its banks. Although big game, such as lions and elephants, is common, leopards are the undoubtable highlight. The most elusive member of the Big Five feels right at home in the tall trees of the park.

Canoe along the Chifungulu Channel: Sausage Tree Camp Zambia is one of a handful of operators with permission to offer canoe tours within the park. This rarity makes it all the more special. Viewing the game from this perspective, as you glide along the calm waters of the Zambezi, creates an intimacy unmatched by other safari experiences.

Bush walks: Zambia pioneered the walking safari, and Sausage Tree’s expert guides take great pride in their ability to read the land for signs of wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may just come face-to-face with a lion!

Take a boat cruise up the Zambezi: Watch as pods of hippo wallow in the water and crocodiles sun themselves on the banks during a magical cruise along the river. Finish your day with a gin and tonic and a fiery African sunset.

Catch a Tigerfish: Battle the mighty tigerfish (the piranha’s giant cousin) during a day of spinning or fly fishing. The best time to fish is between September to December when breeding season makes the fish far more formidable.

Finding a suitable description for Sausage Tree Camp in Zambia is indeed difficult. Impressive and extraordinary are probably the most appropriate adjectives to describe the luxury safari camp that we were fortunate to travel to in October of this year. (press trip).

Sausage Tree Camp – the epitome of bush chic

Despite researching in advance, your idea of the safari camp can only ever be a fraction of what actually awaits you. When you watch hippos bathing in the nearby river from the terrace of your luxury tent in the ‘Sausage Tree Camp’ in the middle of the ‘Lower Zambezi National Park’ in Zambia. It is hard to believe that it is truly happening, even whilst you are reminiscing about the experiences of the morning safari.

“ The epitome of bush chic, Sausage Tree was established in 1996 as

Zambia’s most luxurious bush camp. “

The camp, named after neighbouring trees with an abundance of distinctive sausage-shaped fruits, is part of the Green Safari Group. An environmentally conscious luxury safari company with a tireless commitment to redefining luxury travel through sustainable practices and eco-technologies. Experienced private guides and ‘muchindas’ (butlers) take care of all the guests’ needs. You can look forward to first-class service, privacy and unique experiences, in addition to exciting wildlife viewing at Sausage Tree Camp.

All inclusive

In addition to the overnight stay, the all-inclusive price includes the transfer from/to the JEKI Airstrip, all meals (breakfast, lunch, teatime and dinner); all drinks except for premium items such as champagne; laundry service, twice daily game drives twice a day and unexpected surprises.  (More on that later.)

“Meals are served in the open air restaurant overlooking the Zambezi.”

We skip breakfast because coffee is brought to the room every morning. At lunch we can choose from a variety of options: from burgers to wraps, quinoa salad or pasta. Afternoon tea includes homemade iced tea or lemonade and freshly baked cakes. The dinner is three courses, from which you choose the starter and main course from two alternatives. South African wine complements the meal. Wonderful, unexpected surprises also await, such as lunch in the middle of the river or an evening barbecue in the middle of the bush.

sausage tree safari camp

Sausage Tree Camp consists of only seven suites and one family home. ‘Suite’ is clearly an understatement, considering what we can call our temporary home.

“One can expect a spacious luxury tent in a cool, minimalist style with a touch of old-school safari look, which can be seen in small details such as the binoculars or the radio.”

Furnished with a king-sized bed with an integrated, individually controlled climate roof, a lounge area and a spacious bathroom with a stone bathtub, double washbasin, indoor and outdoor shower, the ‘tent’ has it all. That’s not all, because the highlight is definitely the large terrace with seating: two sun loungers, a lounge bed and a private plunge pool. Views of the Zambezi River and wildlife are naturally included. Each luxury tent is also assigned a private butler or host. During our stay, Chris arranged our wake-up call, brought us coffee for breakfast, accompanied us back to the tent after dinner and coordinated our lunch. The tents in the camp are laid out in such a way that they offer unrestricted privacy. That is if you don’t include our four-legged friends: less than ten minutes after arriving, a herd of elephants trots past our terrace and crosses the river remarkably close.

Wildlife – Private Game Driving

Sausage Tree Camp stands for exclusivity including a twice-daily private game drive. “In our case, George was our private ranger and contact person throughout the entire stay.”

With George we agree when to meet, which animals we want to see and the really important things, like whether it should be wine or a G&T with the sundowner. During the afternoon game drives a sundowner with snacks and nuts enjoyed in the middle of the wilderness. The breaks during game drives are particularly nice: coffee, tea and rusks are served in the morning.

Good to know about Sausage Tree Camp

Accessibility: the best way to reach Sausage Tree Camp is by plane from Lusaka to Jeki Airstrip. 30 minutes flight time in a small propeller plane, landing on the tarmac. Visa: Austrian citizens do not need a visa. Currency: Zambian Kwacha (ZMW). It’s best to bring US dollars for tips. Climate & travel time: Summer runs from August to April, with October and November being extremely hot. Winter runs from May to August, with cool evenings and very chilly morning game drives. The rainy season extends from November to March. Malaria: We consulted our family doctor and did not take any prophylaxis. Simply spray diligently with mosquito spray on site.

The Green in Green Safaris

‘Conservation is close to our hearts and is one of the most important tasks we have set ourselves,’ said Natasha Parker, Marketing Manager at Green Safaris.

sausage tree safari camp

“Green Safaris is the first and only safari operator to offer silent safaris in Zambia and Malawi.”

The guides and their guests sometimes move through the bush in electric vehicles instead of in vehicles with petrol engines. E-cruisers, e-boats and e-mountain bikes offer a noise-free and environmentally conscious way to explore the wildest parts of Africa, allowing guests to get much closer to the animals without disturbing them and polluting nature. But it is not just the environment that is committed to: Green Safaris provides 2.5% of its invested capital annually to support community development in local neighborhoods through its own foundation. The aim of the initiative is to support conservation, community development and sustainability efforts in the regions where the safari accommodations are located.

Why Do Moscow Mules Come in Copper Mugs?

Oct 18, 2019

Have you ever wondered why the Moscow Mule cocktail is served in a copper mug? In this post, we answer that question in detail. As it turns out, the answer is partly based on historical events and partly based on the extra "kick" that copper brings to this classic cocktail. Let's dive in!

Introduction

Moscow Muled copper mug filled with liquid ice and sliced lime on its rim

A remarkable cocktail is something you notice from across the room, easily identified by the signature drinking vessel it's served in. Few are more distinct than the burnished copper mug of a Moscow Mule.

Great cocktails aren't just alcohol and mixers––they should be something more, a full sensory experience from beginning to end. It starts as you observe the precise convergence of ingredients in a golden ratio that blossoms into flavors and aromas of citrus and spicy ginger. It is then delivered into an ice-filled copper mug and garnished with fresh mint and a slice of lime.  Finally, it is presented before you, shiny and cold, compelling you to taste.

The copper mule mug not only tells the story of the drink it contains, but also is essentially functional to the full experience. You might already know that the cone-shaped bowl of a long-stemmed Martini glass was designed so that olives would stand perfectly upright, and the elegantly curvaceous welled Margarita glass was designed to add ample salt, sugar and garnishes.

But why are Moscow Mules served in copper mugs?

Inquiring minds want to know, so this article will sum up the science and history of why traditional Moscow Mules come in copper mugs, and other legit benefits of serving cocktails in pure copper mugs. This includes:

A Brief History of the Moscow Mule

The science of using copper mugs.

  • How Copper Mugs Amplify the Taste & Aroma of your Moscow Mule
  • The Enhanced Experience of Drinking from a Pure Copper Mug

The origin of this timeless cocktail is the tale of the American Dream. One fateful day in 1941 , three struggling entrepreneurs had a serendipitous meeting at the Cock 'N Bull bar on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood: A bar owner passionate about his unpopular home-brewed ginger beer, a businessman who took a big chance and purchased Smirnoff vodka, and a Russian immigrant with a cache of copper mugs she couldn't seem to sell. That day, the unlikely trio wisely decided to join forces in a bold venture that would not only save their individual businesses, but also create an iconic American cocktail.

Essentially, the Moscow Mule is the most successful marketing campaign in cocktail history. At a time when most Americans had never even heard of vodka, this cocktail introduced them to the traditional Russian alcohol, and established Smirnoff as a necessity in both bars and homes alike.

Thanks to celebrity endorsement, the Moscow Mule soon took the Hollywood cocktail scene by storm, and quickly became the most beloved mixed drink of the 1950's.

It's popularity understandably waned during the Cold War, and it was briefly re-branded as the Smirnoff Mule to distance itself from communism. However, the recent cocktail renaissance of the 21st century has seen the Moscow Mule come kicking back, as evidenced by lists like Esquire's Top 10 Cocktails of 2019 , and Business Insider's 8th Best-selling Cocktail in the World, 2018 .

But the answer to why Moscow Mules are served in copper mugs goes much further than a conveniently clever alliance between co-founders desperate for a big break. The story of the Moscow Mule is both the struggle of the immigrant searching for success, and the flashy lifestyle of the rich and famous.

It boasts a simple recipe , yet a complex flavor profile, encapsulated in a shiny copper mug. And as delicious and refreshing as the Moscow Mule may be, it's the copper mug that makes the cocktail so extraordinary.  Like the drink itself, the pure copper mule mug is a balance of form and functionality.

copper mug filled with ice cubed placed on black table

The most scientific benefit of the copper mug is its ability to regulate temperature. When a drink is served in a copper mug, it gets cold fast––and stays that way.

Copper is a renowned thermal conductor that will keep your beverage frosty in any weather, and is one of the reasons the traditional Moscow Mule has become synonymous with summer. Add a little ice, and the copper chills drinks instantly, and sustains a refreshingly icy rim with every sip.

Because copper is such an excellent conductor, it can keep your cold beverages colder for longer. The downfall of many ill-fated cocktails on a hot summer day is melting ice. Copper mugs stay brisk, and don't disrupt the recipe's ratio, so the simple yet distinct flavors of the Moscow Mule remain strong till the last drop.

Another important feature of the solid copper Moscow Mule mug is the handle. Much like the stem of a wine glass, the copper mug handle keeps the nearly 100 degree body temperature of your hand from impacting the status of your deliciously frosty cocktail.

How Copper Mugs Amplify the Taste and Aroma of Your Moscow Mule

If you want to know what a Moscow Mule tastes like, purists would insist the only way to experience it is in a 100% copper mug. Aside from being a great American tradition, copper mugs offer some unique enhancements to both the flavor and aroma of the Moscow Mule (or almost any finely-crafted cocktail).

Although subjective, most discerning drinkers would agree that copper mugs imbue cocktails with a superior taste. Experts explain that the copper oxidizes the vodka upon contact, thus enhancing the flavor profile and potency of the aromatics.

The intense cold of the copper also creates more stability in the bubbles of the ginger beer carbonation, and balances the tangy citrus of the lime with the earthy spice of the ginger.

For the skeptics out there, the theory of superior taste is easily verifiable. Simply make or order two Moscow Mules––one served in a plastic cup, and one served in a copper mug. Take a moment to inhale deeply, enjoy a big sip, and let your senses be the judge.

The epiphany should take a matter of moments, and you soon realize why a Moscow Mule is best served in a copper mug, and why any other cup or glass is vastly inferior. The difference can be so vivid, you might even consider drinking all your favorite beverages from copper mugs, even hot tea and coffee!

The Enhanced Experience of Drinking From a Pure Copper Mug

Throwing back shots with reckless disregard is a great way to get hammered, but a terrible way to enjoy something delicious. People order cocktails for the full package––observing its creation, revelling in its presentation, and slowly savoring its captivating story and unique taste.

Not only is a cocktail a well-balanced combination of spirits and mixers, it's also about the aesthetic and function of the vessel it's served in. A cocktail should be an object of inspired beauty, presented thoughtfully in a suitable glass or mug and garnished appropriately. It should take time, because it's made by hand.

Although the copper mug has become the symbol of Moscow Mules, it can also pair exquisitely with many other cocktails. Many people seem drawn to the shine and nostalgia of the metal, and Mixologists seem impressed by the scientific properties of the copper mug. Other drinks prominently featured in copper mugs include Dark 'n Stormy, Mescal, Gin & Tonic, and Cuba Libre.

No matter how frosted a beer glass gets, nothing can keep a mixed drink colder than a copper mug. The sensation when one's lips touch the ice-cold rim with every sip is part of the unique experience.

The flavors are heightened, the aromas amplified, and the balance of vodka, lime juice and ginger beer is never watered-down by melting ice. Provided your Moscow Mule is served in a pure copper mug, the last sip should be just as robust and enjoyable as the first.

The benefits of drinking from copper mugs aren't a newfound discovery. In fact, copper has been the preferred metal for drinking vessels for thousands of years.

Gurus in India have been using copper mugs for hundreds of years, and copper goblets called Escra have been found in ancient Irish ruins. Even American settles in 1645 drank exclusively from a massive tankard made of pure copper, known today as the Virginia Tankard .

The Moscow Mule is a classic drink served in a magnificent copper mug because it tells a compelling story, and enhances your consumption experience. It is an unforgettable drink because it's served in a mug that is both more beautiful than and functionally superior to glass.

Three Reasons Moscow Mules Come in Copper Mugs

The reason your Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug is not a fluke. It is not because it's the latest trendy hipster craze. It's not just a marketing ploy (although it definitely started out as one), nor is it a conspiracy by the lobbyists for Big Copper.

Moscow Mules come in copper mugs for three reasons: taste, temperature, and presentation.

The unique experience of drinking a Moscow Mule is a balanced combination of these three elements. It's also the reason this drink is not only the most recognizable, but also consistently one of the most popular drinks in global cocktail culture history.

Taste: The natural properties of the copper oxidize the alcohol, resulting in powerful aromatics and superior flavors. The bubbles of the ginger beer stay fizzy, and perfectly counter the acidity of the fresh lime juice. It's spicy yet refreshing. Simply put, it's delicious!

Temperature: Copper is an ideal thermal conductor, instantly chilling your beverage upon creation, and maintaining a consistently arctic temperature. This prevents the ice from quickly melting and dulling the cocktail ratio, while keeping the rim refreshingly frosty with every sip. The handle also keeps your hot little fingers from fluctuating the temperature with every touch.

Presentation: A glinting copper mug looks authentic and catches the eye. It is vintage, yet modern, and tells a story of creativity, charm and resilience. It is instantly recognizable, and makes for a fine looking beverage. Yes please!

The Bottom Line

The copper mug is iconic, a great American tradition of nearly 80 years, and is the only proper way to drink a Moscow Mule. Cheers!

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

sausage tree safari camp

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

sausage tree safari camp

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

sausage tree safari camp

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

sausage tree safari camp

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
