Rummikub is a rummy-like game that you play with tiles instead of cards. The game consists of tiles in 4 colors. Each color has 2 sets of tiles from 1-13, so it's similar to playing with 2 decks of cards. You also have 2 joker tiles. To win the game, play all your tiles before anyone else does by making sets of groups and runs.

Setting up the Game

Step 1 Choose a tile from the bag to see who goes first.

  • You can also mix them in the tile bag if your game has one.

Step 3 Stack up the tiles in groups.

  • If your game has a tile bag, you can leave them in that instead of stacking them on the table. You just need a common pool of tiles to draw from.

Step 4 Give each player a tile rack and 14 tiles.

Starting the Game

Step 1 Try to find 3 tiles of the same number in different colors on your rack.

  • You cannot continue a run from 13 to 1. For instance, you can't play "13, 1, 2." [3] X Research source

Step 3 Begin with the first player and move in a clockwise direction.

  • To play, just lay the tiles down on the table in front of you. Once they're there, anyone can move them around and play off of them.

Step 4 Create your initial meld.

  • You can't play off other sets on the board for your initial meld.
  • You receive points based on the number on the tile. The color doesn't affect the number, so a blue 11 is worth the same amount of points as an orange 11. A joker is worth the number of points on the tile it's replacing.

Step 5 Play your turn within 2 minutes.

  • Be sure to use your joker because if you get caught with it in your hand at the end of the game, it counts for 30 points against you.

Step 7 Take a tile at the start of your turn if you can't play.

Playing off Tiles on the Table

Step 1 Use at least one tile from your deck to manipulate the table.

  • For instance, if there's a run of "3, 4, 5" in blue, you can add a blue 2, a blue 1 and 2, a blue 6, a blue 6 and 7, a blue 2 and 6, etc. to continue the set.
  • If there's a group of a red 6, blue 6, and black 6, you can add an orange 6. However, you couldn't add a blue, black, or red 6 unless you manipulate the set by taking a tile to build another set.

Step 3 Take a tile from a set of 4 to build a new set.

  • For example, if there's a set on the table that's a run of "5, 6, 7, 8" in red, and you need the red 8 to complete a set of 3 8s, you can take it. However, you couldn't take the 6 or 7, because that would leave the set incomplete.

Step 4 Add to and split a set to play tiles from your hand.

  • For example, if there's a run of "6, 7, 8" in blue, you can add a blue 5 to the run. Then, you can take the blue 8 to add to a red 8 and a black 8 to make another set.

Step 5 Split a run to play a duplicate tile.

  • For example, if the run on the board is "8, 9, 10, 11, 12" in blue, and you have a blue 10, you can make the runs "8, 9, 10" and "10, 11, 12" instead.

Step 6 Split up more than one set to make new sets.

  • For example, say the board has "1, 2, 3, 4" in blue, "2, 3, 4" in red, and "2, 3, 4, 5" in orange. You can make a group of 2s, a group of 3s, a group of 4s, a run of "1, 2, 3" in blue (with tiles from your hand) and a group of 5s (with more tiles from your hand).

Step 7 Don't take tiles from a set with a joker.

  • Rules from different versions vary on how you can reuse the joker. In some games, you may be able to pick up the joker only if you can use 2 tiles from you hand to form a new set with the joker.
  • In other versions, you can split or manipulate a set with a joker. Check your game rules, or decide on a rule for your group. [11] X Research source

Ending and Scoring the Game

Step 1 Use all your tiles and say

  • For instance, if a player has the tiles 3, 5, 9, and 13 left, their negative score will be 30.
  • Remember, a joker counts for 30 negative points.

Step 3 Add up all the other players' scores to get the winning player's score.

  • For example, if the other players got -30, -14, and -22, add those scores up to get -66. The winning player gets a positive score of 66.

Step 4 Play the game again, keeping track of each round as you do.

  • The player with the most points wins the game.

  • Get rid of big numbers first so you're not stuck with those points at the end. If you get a joker, use it to help you play the bigger numbers more quickly. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0

Rummikub is a rummy-like game that you play with tiles instead of cards. The game consists of tiles in 4 colors. Each color has 2 sets of tiles from 1-13 in orange, red, blue, and black as well as 2 joker tiles. To set up the game, start by choosing a tile from the bag to see who goes first. The person who draws the highest tile goes first. Flip all the tiles face down and then mix them around. Then stack the tiles in groups of 3 to 5 tiles in the middle of the table. Give each player a tile rack and 14 tiles. To play the game, try to find 3 tiles of the same number in different colors on your rack. All 3 tiles must be the same number but different colors. You can also find runs of 3 in the same color - a run is 3 consecutive numbers in a row like 5, 6, 7. You cannot play a run from 13 to 1 - for example, 13, 1, 2 is an invalid run. Your turn consists of drawing a tile or playing tiles. You can old play tiles after you've made your initial meld. Your initial meld begins when you lay your first set on the table in front of you and must consist of at least 30 points across 1 or multiple sets. Points are calculated by the numbers indicated on the tile. You must complete your turn within 2 minutes. If you exceed the 2 minute timer, you must return your tiles to their original positions and take a tile from the pool for your turn. Jokers replace any tile in the game and can be played as any tile in the game. If you cannot make a valid move, take a tile at the start of your turn. To play off tiles on the table, you must use at least 1 tile from your rack to manipulate the table. The easiest way to play off a set on the table is to build off of it. For example, if there is a run of 3, 4, 5 in blue you can add a blue 2, and a blue 6 to continue the set. You can also manipulate the table by taking a tile from a set of 4 to build a new set. Remember that you cannot take a tile from a set of 3 or else it would leave the set incomplete. Once you use all your tiles, you say "Rummikub!" After Rummikub is called, count up each players' remaining tiles for their score. A joker counts for 30 negative points. Add up all the other players' scores to get the winning player's score. Take the negative away to create the winning player's positive score. Play multiple rounds to decide on an ultimate winner for the game. Rummikub Word Review

rummikub word travel game

Anyone who has dipped a toe into my Zatu Blogs will know that I am a Rummikubber. I love the way the age-old set collection, card game, Rummy, has been switched up into a tile laying game. Because, quite frankly, who doesn’t love tile laying games?!

If you weren’t aware, Rummikub has actually been around for more than 90 years. It also won the lofty Spiel des Jahres Game of the Year award back in 1980. But fast forward a few years to 1983 (and yes, I was alive way back then, but only just!), and the designers decided to swap the numbers for letters. Welcome to Rummikub Word !

S Is For SET!

In Rummikub Word, just like its numeric cousin, your objective is to get rid of all your tiles. You do this by making complete words (“melding”) consisting of at least 3 letters or adding your tiles to existing words already on the table (“manipulating”). You don’t have to add tiles just to the ends of existing words – you can break them up and re-jig them and basically insert your tiles wherever you can fit them.

All you have to ensure is that by the end of your turn, you have added at least one tile from your rack to the table, and all the words make sense. Oh, and just one more thing; the longest new word on the table has to include at least one tile from your rack (or more if you can manage it – using all the tiles on your rack in one turn get double points!).

If you can’t lay, you pick up a tile and add it to your rack. If there are still tiles in the bag at the end of your turn, you draw back up to 7 tiles. Two smiley face Joker tiles are wild and can represent any letter – these can be super helpful to offload some tiles on a given turn. But of course, they can also be re-used by other players if they can swap it for the letter, it currently represents. Plus, at the end of the game, if you are still holding it, that is a 30 point penalty at end game scoring! Ooft!

With a lawyer and an engineer in the house, words v numbers are often a battle we face. I love writing. My husband loves maths. But, when it comes to puzzles, we both love a good Su-Doku as much as a crossword.

Okay, so I punish myself with the cryptic clues whereas he prefers the more literal quiz. And he goes straight for the killer-dokus whilst I mosey through the intermediate options. But we both love Rummikub and Rummikub Word is a really interesting twist on the solid gameplay of the original.

Like a very flexible Scrabble (and I mean VERY flexible), you’re using your own letters and your opponents’ letters to make new words for points. But there’s no restrictive grid or high scoring letters to worry about. Each one is worth a point, and you only score the longest word you make anyway.

Final Thoughts

Rummikub will be an ever-green game for us. The tension caused by number crunching is inversely proportionate to its simplicity, and we love that brain-cracking feeling. But Rummikub Word has its merits too. Mini-Meeple really enjoys making words and breaking up existing words to form his own. And that mixture of fun and development is golden for a parent gamer like me!

It also feels more relaxed and chilled out than its numeric counterpart. Although, having said that, you can ramp up the challenge by setting a timer per turn, or even theming a game so that only certain words can be played and/or scored.

Ultimately, if you love word games where you can meddle and mess with other players’ efforts, but not in a way that feels overly restrictive, then Rummikub Word could be a good addition to your collection!

Learning should be fun and on Wordgames.com you can find lots of games like Rummikub that make practice a joy. Play now one our our best board games!

Come and play a round of Rummikub on Wordgames.com, and see who can score the most points in this classic and popular family game. With its blend of strategy and luck, Rummikub is a game where one move can decide the course of the whole round. This keeps things tense, but also incredibly fun. And due to the fact that you can play Rummikub either online or against an opponent that is controlled by the computer, you can always find someone who will play with you. What's more, you can even customize your experience with your particular preferences and invite other people to play by these custom rules. And when you play against the computer you can define how long a turn takes, the number of opponents, as well as the difficulty level.

Each round of Rummikub starts with you receiving a number of random tiles from a stack. You have to use these tiles to create all sorts of combinations, like putting them in consecutive order or, if you have three or more of the same type, you can place them on the table. Of course, the other players have no ideea what tiles you have. What really sets Rummikub apart from other similar games from this genre is the fact that you can use other player's tiles as well, if they are on the board. And, of course, they can also use yours. This really adds an element of unpredictability to Rummikub, and it really increases the challenge, but also the fun. It's really fun to be able to score points with everything that is on the table. There could be times when you are stuck and you can't make any valid moves, but one of the other players places some tiles on the board, which give you a shot to reenter the game. If you really can't make any moves when it's your turn, you can always get a new tile from the stack, and hope that it's something that you can use. Or, if you get really lucky, you can get the Joker tile, that can act as a substitute for any other tile. But remember, your opponents can also make use of this special tile. If you ever do forget about the rules of Rummikub, you can always play the tutorial round that the game provides.

Have fun on Wordgames.com with another classic family game and play Rummikub.

The object of the game is to be the first player to place all their tiles on the table. The game includes 106 tiles: 104 colored number tiles, plus 2 jokers. Each tile displays a number ranging from 1 to 13, in four colors: black, blue, yellow and red. All tiles appear twice, except for the jokers. To begin playing, all tiles appear face-down on the table. Each player receives 14 random tiles, which are placed on the player's rack, while the remaining tiles form the tile pool. The game now begins, starting with the "Initial Meld" move (explained below). Tiles must be placed on the table in sets of either "Groups" or "Runs": Groups include at least 3 tiles of the same number – each one in a different color. Runs include at least 3 tiles with consecutive numbers in the same color. Please note: The number 1 can only be used as the lowest number in a run, and cannot follow the number 13. A joker may be used to replace any specific tile. In order to begin placing tiles on the table, each player must first achieve the Initial Meld: sets (Groups or Runs) with a total sum value of at least 30 points. The points are calculated by adding up the numbers on all the tiles used in the Initial Meld. If a joker is used, it receives the value of the tile that it is substituting. Manipulations are not allowed during the initial meld! Players who have achieved the Initial Meld may – in subsequent turns – use tiles from their rack to create new sets, build upon existing sets on the table, or completely rearrange (manipulate) existing sets on the table – providing all sets created are valid at the end of the turn and no unused tiles remain. If a player cannot or does not wish to place tiles on the table during a certain turn, the player is required to take a random tile from the tile pool. Each turn ends when the player has finished placing new tiles on the table (press the v button to approve) and/or manipulating existing sets – or alternatively if the player takes a tile from the pool. A time limit per turn may be set, if players so desire – for example, a time limit of 15, 30 or 60 seconds per turn. If a player does not complete their move within the time limit, the player must return all tiles to their previous position and take a penalty of three tiles from the pool. (The default is no time limit). If the game has not yet been won but all tiles in the pool have been used, each player has just one more turn. The game will then end and each player adds up the value of their remaining tiles on their rack. The player with the lowest score wins. Manipulation Manipulation is the most exciting part of the game, as players try to place as many tiles as possible on the table by rearranging or adding to existing sets. And again: Manipulations are not allowed during the initial meld! Following are examples of manipulations. Important: At the end of each turn, all sets on the table must be intact, with no unused single tiles remaining. The computer will signal if any of the sets or tiles have been placed incorrectly. Manipulation Examples: 1. Adding tiles to an existing set 2. Removing a fourth tile from a set and using it for a new set 3. Adding a fourth tile to a set and then removing a different tile from the set to create a new set 4. Splitting a run and adding a tile, to create two new sets 5. A combined split 6. Multiple splits Using a Joker • All rules apply to both jokers, regardless of color (red or black). • Either joker can be used to complete any set. • Two jokers CAN be used in a single set. • A joker on the table may be replaced with a suitable tile from the table or from the player's rack, and the player may then use the joker in another set. • However, a player can only retrieve a joker from an existing set on the table after completing the initial meld. • In the case of a group of three identical numbers, the joker can represent either of the missing colors (as there are four colors in the game). • Once a player retrieves a joker, it must be used it in the same turn. • Sets containing jokers may be split and manipulated like regular sets. • Although each tile appears twice in the game (with the same number and color), a joker can be used to represent the same tile a 3rd time. • If a joker remains on a player's rack at the end of the game, its penalty value is 30 points. At the end of each game, scoring will be calculated as follows: The winner receives the score equivalent to the sum total of all tiles remaining on the other players' racks. Each losing player receives minus the sum value of all tiles remaining on their own rack. Strategy Tips The beginning of each Rummikub game may seem slow, but as the table builds up with sets, more and more manipulations are possible. In the early stages of the game it may be a good idea to keep some tiles on your rack, so that the other players "open up" the table and provide more manipulation opportunities for you. If you have a set of 4 tiles, it is sometimes useful to only place 3 of the tiles on the table, keeping the 4th tile to be used during your next turn – instead of having to draw a tile from the pool. Keeping a joker on the rack for a number of turns may also be a good strategy – but you will risk receiving 30 penalty points if another player finishes the game before you.

I think the one you’re not sure about is also Mayakovskaya) I really, really like this post, cuz the metro is awesome. I’ve always loved to feel the idea of so many lives squashed right next to each other on a moving train.

There’s a whole story about it but I’m sure it’s not Mayakovskaya. It’s about three or four stops down. And thanks! I love that too, just wish that feeling was more evident in the pictures.

I think the fourth and seventh from the bottom do a good job of capturing that. Ah, okay)) What’s the story, do you know??
