Thanks to our guide Maximilien (Max) who is very well-informed of the rich culture of Belgium and also regarding chocolates. I really enjoyed all the chocolates from various shops and also the waffles. If you are in Brussels, take this tour and don’t forget to bring water!

The first tour we did was the Chocolate Tasting Tour. The tour is centred on the Grote Markt, and explains the history and development of chocolate making in Belgium - very interesting. It was hot, and there were lots of people around. Most importantly, it was great fun.

The guide was entertaining and we all had a great time, ate delicious chocolate and learned a little bit too.

Senna was our tour guide and he was phenomenal! He had so much knowledge about the history of chocolate and the process of chocolate making! I highly recommend the tour!

What is the ticket price for the chocolate museum?

For a self-guided tour, we charge €13 for adults, €11 for youths (12-26 years) and seniors (65 years and older) and €7 for children (3-11 years). The price of the chocolate museum includes the entrance to the museum, the supply of audio guides (available in 11 languages) and the tasting of artisanal chocolate.

What are the opening hours of the Cocoa and Chocolate Museum?

Choco-Story, The Chocolate Museum is open every day from 10am till 6pm (last tickets at 5pm). We are open throughout the year from Monday to Sunday, even on public holidays, and during the school holidays. We are closed on the 25th of December and the 1st of January, as well as from the 8th to the 19th of January 2024 incl.Please also note that on 24 and 31 December, the last entrance is exceptionally at 3pm. As part of renovations in the museum, we may close the museum for a longer period.

How is the museum visit organized?

Our museum invites you to discover the history of Belgian cocoa and chocolate through a fun and interactive tour. The museum tells the story of the origin and evolution of cocoa and chocolate and shows you a unique collection of objects (ancient and modern) related to the world of cocoa and chocolate. The highlight of the visit is a demonstration where you can see how Belgian pralines are made according to traditional methods. In total, the visit to the museum lasts between 1 hour and 1 hour and a half. For a guided tour of the museum in a group, you should allow about 1.5 hours.

Do I have to reserve my tickets in advance?

In order to best plan your visit, we encourage you to book your tickets via our online reservation form, especially during peak periods. This ensures that an audio guide is available and that there are no queues at the entrance to the museum. In addition, reservation is mandatory for our chocolate-making workshops.

What is the address of our chocolate museum in Brussels?

Our museum is located in Rue de l'Étuve 41 in 1000 Brussels, a stone's throw from the Grand Place and the Manneken-Pis. Our museum is in the heart of the capital, so you can easily reach it from anywhere in Belgium. Do you live in Flanders or Wallonia? Located less than ten minutes from the Central Station, our museum is accessible from all major cities such as Liège, Namur or Hasselt.

Would you like to visit us by public transport in Brussels? Don't hesitate, our chocolate museum is near the Central Station, Grand-Place, Manneken-Pis and Grand Sablon stops. For our visitors traveling by car, there are several parkings in the immediate surroundings of the museum. Finally, there are four bicycle stands in the museum courtyard.

Do you love or even adore chocolate? Then you’re in luck, as Brussels is also the capital of chocolate. Specialist boutiques are not the only places where you can discover the delights of chocolate in the city. The Belgian capital also hosts museums, workshops, events and even gastronomic walking tours. Amateurs and enthusiasts will be blown away by everything that Brussels has to offer. Explore the history of chocolate, try your hand at making it, discover its many shapes and forms, and, of course, treat yourself to some! So, find out everything the capital has in store for you, so you can set off on an adventure to learn all about this brown gold, and experience some unadulterated gourmet pleasure.

A little history: when the cocoa bean was transformed into a praline

Brussels’ love affair with chocolate began at the beginning of the century. Pharmacist Jean Neuhaus came up with the idea of covering medicine in chocolate in order to disguise its unpleasant taste. In 1912, he replaced medicine with fresh cream, and the praline was born! In order to protect them, his wife created a carton box, just like a jewellery box, and called it the “ballotin”. One hundred years later, a ballotin of chocolate pralines is still the favourite gift from Brussels, both to give and to receive.

Chocolate museums

Learn more about cocoa and its history at Brussels' museums of chocolate. The  Belgian Chocolate Village  is located in the old Victoria biscuit and chocolate factory, just a few steps from the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Koekelberg. Along an interactive trail, the museum tells you the history of chocolate and reveals the secrets of its production. Its exhibitions include sculptures made by chocolatiers and a tropical greenhouse where the cocoa trees and exotic essences, used in flavouring the chocolates, are grown. Close to the Grand-Place,  Choco-Story Brussels  offers you the chance to watch a demonstration of how chocolates are made, given by the museum’s very own chocolatier.

Workshops: make some creations of your own

Try your hand at being a master chocolatier in the many workshops that offer you the opportunity to make your own chocolates.  Planète Chocolat  gives you the chance to put yourself in the shoes of a chocolatier and learn how to make this famous delicacy in the very heart of its workshop.  Laurent Gerbaud  is another specialist who teaches you how to create your own “mendiants” (small pieces of chocolate with pieces of dried fruit and nuts) and tells you more about different varieties of cocoa during a tasting of ten chocolates. The workshop ends with another tasting, this time of the master craftsman’s collection. They also organise chocolate workshops with beer and wine pairing.

Belgian Chocolate Workshop  also teaches you to make your own pralines and mendiants. What's more, this activity is also perfect for vegetarians as you will be able to make vegan or lactose-free chocolates simply by asking at the start of the workshop. It also includes the sampling of a home-made hot chocolate.

At  Choco-Story Brussels , you can make mendiants, lollies, a personalised chocolate bar and other chocolate specialities. A tasting and museum visit are included in the workshop. If you come in a group, you can learn about, among other things, how to make pralines during a workshop. At the  Belgian Chocolate Village , Brussels’ other museum dedicated to chocolate, why not combine your visit with a group workshop for six to twelve people. Make your own mendiants and pralines in teams, with family or friends, guided by the museum's artisan chocolatiers.

As for  Concept Chocolate , they offer two distinct workshops: one where you can learn how to make your own chocolate bars and mendiants and another giving you an initiation in the food-pairing of chocolate and Belgian beers.

Finally,  The Belgian Chocolate Makers  organise workshops every day of the week, during which you can make your own chocolates to take home: mendiants, truffles, lollipops, etc.

Guided visits: gastronomic walking tours

The guides will share their passion for chocolate with you along with the history of this little brown bean. Belgian Chocolate Tasting Tour

We'll start this delicious Belgian chocolate and beer tour by meeting at 6 pm on the Grand Place in Brussels.

First, we'll stroll through the Royal Galleries of Saint-Hubert to visit the birthplace of the delicious Belgian praline. Of course, we'll taste one of these products and learn about its history. The next stop will be at another centrally located chocolate shop where we'll taste a delicious Belgian praline .

We'll then head to another emblematic establishment in the centre of Brussels to enjoy an artisanal truffle made with a new type of cocoa called rosé. Your mouth will be watering!

After enjoying the flavours of Belgian chocolate, it's time to taste its most famous drinks. Did you know that there are only 12 varieties of Trappist beer in the world? Well, out of those dozen, five belong to Belgium.

The tour will continue by tasting 2 more beers in other well-known establishments in the historic centre of the capital, where we'll conclude our food tour of Brussels at 8:30 pm.

…How about a DIY chocolate tasting in Brussels?

Do not eat beforehand!    Besides an empty stomach, you need a comfy pair of shoes as there’s a bit of walking (about 30 minutes).  Despite being a chocolate lover, I felt that this chocolate walking tour of Brussels made me appreciate the chocolate that I eat. Similarly, it made me elevate my tastes a bit from Leonidas to…Neuhaus ( progress !).

Stops on our Belgian chocolate tour

We started at the Royal Galleries of Brussels. This beautiful pedestrian mall is home of many of the prestigious chocolatiers of Brussels and it’s enjoyable to walk around. (There’s also a great Ethiopian coffee shop if you need some coffee!)

Leonidas (Royal Gallery)

I’m a little ashamed to admit that before this chocolate tour, I thought that Leonidas was the good stuff. It’s still quite tasty—and it’s fitting to start off a self-guided chocolate tour with the most famous Belgian chocolatier, known for popularizing chocolate for the masses.

Leonidas was started in the 1900s by a Greek-American entrepreneur who started making chocolate after showing off his chocolate at the World’s Fair. He made the first mass-produced chocolate for the masses. It remains a fixture of the chocolate world that can be found in  many countries.

Neuhaus (Royal Gallery)

This pharmacist turned chocolatier was the first to display chocolate in an elevated way. The original shop in the Royal Galleries was one of my favorite places to visit in Brussels. The shop is decorated like an old pharmacy although over the years, Neuhaus (a Swiss immigrant) and his family have experimented with yearly varieties that vary considerably.

Mary (Royal Gallery)

Mary was the first female Belgian chocolatier. She worked hard to get her chocolates noticed by the King of Belgium.  Her beautiful hand-drawn boxes are perfect for bringing home chocolate for relatives and I loved the feminine touches to the Mary shop in the Royal Galleries .   They still follow her original recipes.

Wittamer (6 Place Du Grand Sablon)

Wittamer is one of the famous chocolatiers and pastry shops of Brussels. The original cafe down the street is famous for cakes although we only went into the chocolate shop.

Of the Belgian chocolate that we tried on our tour, I loved Wittamer the most as it surprised me the most.   I especially loved the passionfruit chocolate. (I ended up getting extra Wittamer chocolates as a souvenir!)

Pierre Marcolini (Rue des Minimes 1)

Even if you’re not planning to do a chocolate tour in Belgium, I consider visiting this extravagant chocolatier something to put on your list of what to do in Brussels.  Pierre Marcolini was a chef-pâtissier prior to deciding that he’d make chocolate.

Originally from Belgium, Pierre Marcolini produces some of the most expensive Belgian chocolate you’ll find with the most elaborate store displays. However,  he goes out of his way to source his products 100% from sustainable sources and produces chocolate around single-sourced chocolate beans.  As a result, you can eat this artisan Belgian chocolate without any guilt: the farmers who produce his chocolate  are well-compensated for their beans.

I quite enjoyed the chocolates although they were on the pricer side with beautiful packaging.  Pierre Marcolini also makes macarons and ice cream during the summer (covered in chocolate).

Unfortunately, Frederic Blondeel has moved to a different neighborhood, however, he now has a larger factory and shop in the less touristic neighborhood of Koekelberg.

Frederic Blondeel is the other newcomer to the chocolate scene and his chocolates are bean to bar.  Every single  bean is accounted for and he toasts his beans in the same equipment used by his grandfather.  His chocolates were the most experimental of the ones that we tried  If you’re looking for the most affordable high-end chocolate on a budget, you should be buying your Belgian chocolates at Frederic Blondeel. Frederic Blondeel was my husband’s favorite by far as he loved how the flavors were  not  what he expected. We’ll agree to disagree.

I come from a region in Italy that prides itself with some of the finest chocolate made in the whole country (so I’m a spoiled kid), but man did I enjoy Belgium! I visited Brussels over a long weekend with my mother a few years ago, and although we didn’t take a tour we stopped at every other chocolate shop to buy more and more. Heaven!

Will definally do that if I go back. One time when I was there I had to run out the morning we were flying back to buy a full size suitcase. Apperently I had bought to much choccolat =)

So cool! I never did a chocolate tour in belgium, but I did try most of them that you listed. My favorite stilll tho is DELREY in Antwerp where I live. OMG! But Neuhaus seconds it and then Leonidas, just because it is under the Hotel where I work haha ( DelRey is across it HAHA) . But the tour where you get the most chocolate is always the best choice isn’t it? – btw the most tasty chocoate brand you find in the shops here that Iike is: Cote d’ or , with the elephant on it… so gooood

I also did try Cote D’Or, but if you can get neuhaus…well the choice is clear. 😉 I also like this other brand that I’d see in Carrefour. I’m blanking on the name, but they had all kinds of nice flavors, including banana. It’s a small bar.

Thanks for the review – we were a group that booked this trip just because of your post! A note/update regarding your info; we got 9 chocolates (which was the standard) and not 17 which was okay but did leave us a bit dissappointed after reading your post and expecting 8 more. For this option you will not need a guide, you simply enter the chocolate shop and choose the "menu" you are most interested in tasting. I recommend you to do this activity with children , as the chocolate shop is very spacious and serves both inside and outside.

Pierre Marcolini is perhaps the most famous Belgian chocolatier who is still around to innovate and shape his brand. Throughout Belgium, you will find a dozen locations of Marcolini outlets. At least four locations of this chocolatier are in Brussels. The main one is just 5 minutes from the Grand Place and is the one I recommend the most.

Inside you are going to find a tea room to have a Belgian tea and combine it with a selection of hot chocolates. Their hot chocolate is seriously spectacular, thick to the point that it sticks to your lips. The macarons are also quite good; however, I recommend you try the salted caramel . Before I start, I want to point out that chocolate tasting is definitely one of the things you have to do on your visit to Brussels , the chocolate capital of the world, and I'll mention some useful facts about the Brussels chocolate scene. The chocolates here are called pralines , and almost all of them are sold by weight . But if you buy only a few, then the price is per chocolate; usually the limit is between 3 and 4 units .

There is a very famous alley near the Grand Place that is full of chocolate shops, ideal for not going too far from the center. In that area most of the owners and workers speak perfect English. They usually have the habit of giving away a free chocolate after you order something, sometimes even when you come in. You will see how friendly they are in explaining the variety of chocolates they offer. Remember that quality is not synonymous with a very high price, so look carefully and do not get carried away by appearances.

An ideal plan if you are going to see Brussels in 4 days . However, if you are looking for less hustle and bustle and more comfort when it comes to making chocolate tours and visiting chocolate shops, you should opt for an excursion to Bruges , or better yet, to the city of Ghent . Less choice, but more convenience.

Table 128 opens in downtown Des Moines with pork shoulder, fancy beets and those Brussels sprouts

Two years and nine months after Table 128 closed in Clive, chef and owner Lynn Pritchard finally has his 2.0 version of the farm-to-table restaurant.

The beloved restaurant reopened in new space that’s a little sleeker, a little larger and with all the light touches to dishes that Pritchard is known for. Some things remain the same: the focus on farm-fresh ingredients, the clever cocktails, the excellent service. Some dishes returned, such as Lynn's burger, the chocolate chip cookies, and those Brussels sprouts.

Here’s a look at everything you need to know about the new Table 128.

The space at the new Table 128

An assortment of tables with chairs and a banquette that forms an L-shape make up the seating at the restaurant. Diners walk in to the dining room that seats 52 that splays out in front of them and to the left, and a bar with seven seats to the right. Outside sits a large patio with tables featuring blue umbrellas dotting the space that will capture the afternoon sun. Stay tuned for tweaks to that area, with smaller cozy seating areas with couches on the way.

The 2,125-square-foot restaurant is in a new building called Gray’s Landing at 10th Street and MLK Parkway in Des Moines, giving Pritchard a chance to design the space from studs to rafters.

In Clive, customers appreciated the homey feel of the space. "We were hearing things like, 'We feel like we're coming into your home and we're sitting in your dining room,'" Pritchard said. "That was a very intentional piece in curating the design of this property. I wanted to make that warmth continue."

Indeed, it feels welcoming, with tables not too close to each other, a curated collection of art behind the bar, and a soundtrack that feels like Blue Note jazz from the 1950s. As the sun goes down, the dining room takes on a glow from lights lining the banquettes.

“I keep using the word ‘luxe’ and I don't want that to be the driving force of what this is,” Pritchard said while giving a tour of the space before it opened. “I don't want it to be a luxurious restaurant. I don't want it to be pretentious or have this austerity to it. I wanted to be very approachable but elevated and thoughtful and curious.”

And curated is another word Pritchard likes to describe the restaurant. For example, everything from the wallpaper to the carpet to the paint helps with the acoustics in the room.

“With all the furniture and all the finishes, it has a very round feel to me. It doesn’t sound hollow. It doesn’t sound like I’m in an office space, despite the fact that 95% of the dining space is an exposed, rafted ceiling,” Pritchard said.

Pritchard saved the lights from the original Table 128 and hung them overhead for continuity between the two restaurants.

Blues and greens play together in the décor ― velvet high-back chairs in navy surround the private dining room table. Hunter green is found in the quartz on the bar top. The wallpaper has a hint of shimmery green in it. The kitchen staff wears royal navy chefs coats while they’re prepping, as a reminder that they are still learning. They switch to white at service.

Two high-tops sit in front of the kitchen, which looks out to the south. Those may be the two best seats in the restaurant with their views of the action in the kitchen and the outside world on either side.

On the other side of the kitchen is the private dining room with a long table and 10 navy high-back chairs. Two abstract pieces from Sarah Grant from Sticks in the East Village hang on the wall.

Who are the other players at Table 128 that I should know?

Jacob Demars, the former executive chef behind the now-closed Barbarian inside Kinship Brewing Co., is the chef de cuisine at Table 128.  Barbarian closed in November  when the brewery was unable to pay its staff.

Demars came to Des Moines in 2017 to head up Marlene’s at Sevastopol Station on Southeast Sixth Street, then worked as the chef at  Trostel's Dish in Clive  before opening his own  fine-dining eatery R I Restaurant in Windsor Heights  in 2019. There Demars served seafood dishes reminiscent of his youth in Rockport, Massachusetts, melded with Iowa ingredients. Diners will see his childhood reflected in some of the dishes at Table 128.

Demars and Pritchard worked on the menu together, with Demars bringing dishes such as his Cape Ann clam chowder. The plating also leans into Demars' artistic side.

Garrett Dotsch, the former general manager at the East Village restaurant Alba, came on board as the general manager at Table 128.

What to order at Table 128

Each meal starts with an amuse bouche, a gift from the chef, that at the soft opening featured a beet lemonade inside white chocolate.

Every meal ends with a small chocolate chip cookie for each diner, a remnant of the original Table 128.

Brussels sprouts: This warm dish, a popular item on the previous Table 128 menu, comes with prosciutto and Marcona almonds for extra crunch and shaved Manchego and Parmesan cheeses for a nutty bite. Dotsch described it as "from the old days."

Steak tartare: This is not your traditional tartare. Instead, an arrabiata sauce makes this a spicy dish.

Roasted beets: A melding of poached yellow beets and slightly tart Granny Smith apple spirals just melt with a caraway mousse floating underneath.

24-hour pork shoulder: Two pieces of pork — a shoulder and a chop — brine for 24 hours in this dish that Pritchard recommends.

Seared Atlantic salmon: A bed of farro porridge underneath this dish creates soft textures while coffee-cured pancetta and candied walnuts contrast with crispy crunch.

Items are marked as gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan, as appropriate.

Pritchard said he will probably stick to this menu through the end of the month when he will start swapping out dishes, depending on what is in season.

What’s on the lunch menu at Table 128?

Perhaps one of the biggest appeals to lunch at Table 128, aside from the patio, the food, and the new dining room is the abundant parking sans meters. This may well become the spot to meet friends, grab a group of business associates for a quick meal, or broker a deal in Des Moines.

Many of the same items found at dinner appear at lunch as well — the roasted beets, the Brussels sprouts, roasted broccolini, a short rib, a charred Caesar salad.

Look for sandwiches and burgers as well, including maple-cured salmon on rosemary focaccia, a Caprese sandwich, mortadella and marinated tomato, and a Route 128 burger with applewood-smoked bacon and a garlic aioli. Each comes with fries, a side salad, or soup.

What to drink at Table 128

The menu offers a combination of cocktails, spirit-free drinks, beers, and wines by the bottle and glass.

The Intrinsic Travels pairs unexpected ingredients, including rye and sherry with a hint of grilled ciabatta, and Manchego and a raisin as a garnish. Don't think; just trust the process. It pays off.

The fluffy lavender lemonade, a spirit-free drink, gets its froth from evaporated milk.

Who is Lynn Pritchard?

Pritchard is the chef and owner behind Table 128, an upscale modern American restaurant focused on seasonal ingredients and artistic presentations. Before he opened Table 128 Bistro + Bar in Clive in 2013, he operated Tartine in the space for two years.

He opened 503 Cocktail Lab & Tasting Lounge with an ever-changing menu that includes handmade pastas, cheese plates, and his Brussels sprouts salad in the East Village in early 2022.

He also plans to open Hugo’s Wood Fired Kitchen in the Drake neighborhood soon. The restaurant in the same building as the new WesleyLife Meals on Wheels location will serve Mediterranean food in the space named for his son. Expect pizzas as well as dishes influenced by the flavors of northern Africa, Middle Eastern countries Lebanon and Turkey, and the lighter touches of Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal at the restaurant, where the patio is bigger than the dining room. 

Pritchard worked at Red Crow Grille, a white-tablecloth restaurant that specialized in seasonal contemporary American fare, in Bettendorf as the executive chef for more than six years, and before that, worked as the food and beverage director of Jumer's Castle Lodge when it was in Bettendorf.

Pritchard graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.
