Natalie Anne Merchant is an American singer-songwriter and musician who was part of the alternative rock band 10,000 Mechanics until 1993.

Merchant's first big break in the music industry came as lead singer and primary lyricist for 10,000 Maniacs, joining in the beginning days in 1981 while she was a student at Jamestown Community College. The group recorded their album 'Human' and Merchant contributed lead vocals and played piano for seven studio albums. After parting ways with the band, Natalie took two years to compose her first solo release 'Tigerlily' which was released through the Elektra label. It charted at #13 on the US Billboard Charts and is now certified as five times platinum selling.

The follow up 'Ophelia' was a far grander affair than the debut, enlisting the help of British composer Gavin Bryars who composed and conducted a symphonic arrangement for the LP. It is her highest charting album at #8 in the US and also performed well around the world, entering charts in countries including the UK and New Zealand. In 2000, Merchant embarked on a folk tour in the United States with many shows being supported by alt-country band Wilco. She became her most experimental on the next release, 'Motherland' which won praise by critics for a developing sound and a boldness in vision.

She continued to release new material continuously and tour the produce across the States and worldwide. Her 2014 self titled album topped the US folk charts and sold over 200,000 copies worldwide, it was her first album made up of exclusive solo material since 2001 LP 'Motherland'.

Live reviews

Natalie Merchant originally of 10,000 Mechanics has gone on to have a successful solo career all of her own on both sides of the Atlantic. Her alt-rock/pop sound has captivated audiences for over two decades with a unique vocal tone and performance style that simply oozes both life and passion for her music.

It feels like a substantial time since Merchant released her top 10 single 'Carnival' yet it is still met with the same deafening cheers as ever much to the delight of the lady of the hour. The highly talented backing band knows Natalie's discography very well and keep the pace going all throughout the show to allow her to simply sing and interact with the audience. She has a completely natural way in which to address the crowds and she is able to handle a crowd of hundreds with ease. They are all very much on side throughout the night and applaud the likes of 'Motherland' and 'Break Your Heart' loudly. She takes a final bow and says her last thank yous to both the audience and her musicians before a slick rendition of 'Kind & Generous'.

Natalie Merchant, Ridgefield Playhouse CT. July 6th. I had not seen Natalie Merchant live in a long time, but her voice still sounds just as beautiful as ever. She is acompanied by a mini orchestra and performs a lot of songs from her new cd "Ladybird" as well as songs from her other solo albums including "Tigerlilly'. Natalie is celebrating the 20th anniversary of "Tigerlilly" and a special documentary is being filmed in honor of this. Natalie's perfomance on stage includes her signature dancing and twirling along with interacting with her audience. She was talking about some people in the front row that were snacking on something during the show. When they left behind their candy wrapper, Natalie immediately started reading the ingredients of the candy and even making up lyrics and singing about the ingredients, lol. Natalie also brought some young girls up on stage during her third encore to help her sing the song "Thank You". I highly reccommend anyone to go see Natalie on this current concert tour.

Despite having a cold, Natalie Merchant marched on and delivered a signature performance including a few 10,000 maniac songs. The musicians created an enormous sound that filled the bowl. A masterful string quartet carried the show with very elegant arrangements. You could sense the crowd wanted to hear more 10,000 Manaic songs but it didn't matter what she sang as her voiced soothed the crowd. Been seeing her performance for over 20 years and she keeps getting better with time. Catch one of her shows if you can. It'll be a time to remember...these are the days.

Great place for a concert which wasn't good in my opinion.

Natalie has an incredible voice and large number of wonderful compositions but a whole concert with voice and classic guitar only was too flat.

In my opinion it needed another instrument such as fiddle or accordion and alternatively an electric guitar as per original 10.000 maniacs arrangements.

Corky dancer with a lot of heart. Her voice has not faded at all with age. Wish she played a bit more of her old stuff that I knew but over all the music was beautiful. The concert has a calm feel to it. We were seated the entire time which was nice.

Natalie Merchant has the most lovely voice and most beautiful soul in the Multiverse .

Just sayin' .

This review was written by Susan Leader Ator. Please feel free to contact me if you disagree. I'd love to psycho-analyze you...

This was one of the finest live concerts that I have ever been to. The chamber orchestra that joined Natalie was one of a kind. Natalie was friendly, spontaneous and warm. Great experience to share with children.

Such a great show !!! ❤ venue has the seats too close. No leg room and you are right on top of each other. But her show was worth the discomfort.

Natalie Merchant Emerges From Darkness With Nothing But Love

Merchant is preparing to tour the new music, with stops in such cities as pittsburgh, boston, cleveland, atlanta, milwaukee, chicago, new york, san francisco and los angeles, by mark kennedy • published april 11, 2023 • updated on april 11, 2023 at 4:49 pm.

As the nation went through a health emergency in 2020, so did Natalie Merchant.

The singer-songwriter had major spine surgery just four days before lockdown, with three bones removed from her neck and an incision made over her vocal cords. She lost her voice and suffered nerve damage in her right hand.

It took nine months to get her voice back and a year to get her hand to behave. And yet out of that came not bitterness or anger, but love: The heart-forward new album “Keep Your Courage.”

“This album sort of grew out of all that. It was a health crisis, but also everything was in crisis in the world,” she says. “We all turned inward and held on to each other. And the only thing that really mattered was love. Love and caring for people.”

Get Southern California news, weather forecasts and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC LA newsletters.

“Keep Your Courage” has some of Merchant's best songwriting, with melodies that veer from Gaelic to Middle Eastern, delving into horn-driven soul, melancholy ballads, pure pop and defiant sisterhood anthems. The last lines are: “Love will conquer all.”

Country Music Icons to Host 58th Academy of Country Music Awards in Texas

“It wasn’t until I wrote the liner notes that I realized how connected all the songs were,” she says from her home in New York's Hudson Valley. “This is kind of a de facto concept record.”

The 10-track collection is rooted in myth and legend, with some songs titled “Come on, Aphrodite,” ”Narcissus," “Tower of Babel” and "The Feast of Saint Valentine.” Joan of Arc graces the cover.

“It’s very valuable to use cultural references because they carry so much meaning and iconic symbolism. During the pandemic, it really felt like we were living in the myth,” she says. “I really turn to mythology not to understand what’s happening, but to see a reflection of what’s happening in our contemporary world.”

Abena Koomson-Davis, musical director of The Resistance Revival Chorus, and Merchant first duetted at a Radio City Music Hall benefit for healthcare workers impacted by COVID-19 and instantly felt something click.

“It was kind of like our voices met and said, ‘Hey, I know you! We’re friends.’ And then our relationship followed,” Koomson-Davis says, laughing. “Our voices kind of introduced us to each other.”

The album kicks off with both women singing “Big Girls” and “Come on, Aphrodite.” Other songs include “Sister Tilly,” a loving ode to the trailblazing women of her mother's generation — "Your Rilke poems and your stacks of Mother Jones,” she sings — and “Song of Himself,” a “love letter” to poet Walt Whitman with the lyrics, “Come sing your song of love bold, brave and proud.”

“I read his poetry like sacred text. It’s really, really helpful to me, helps me,” Merchant says. “It reinforces my hope for humanity, and it makes me pause and notice the miracles all around me.”

She chose an image of Joan of Arc — a photo of a sculpture of the young woman in armor with a sword over her heart — as the symbol of courage, a warrior for love.

“I think women need a suit of armor these days, as we always have. We keep thinking that we’re moving toward a more just liberal society where women can feel safe, and yet sexual violence against especially young women is higher than it’s been in decades.”

Merchant is preparing to tour the new music, with stops this spring and summer in such cities as Pittsburgh, Boston, Cleveland, Atlanta, Milwaukee, Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Merchant first made musical waves in the the 1980s with the band 10,000 Maniacs — with such hits as “These Are Days” and “Trouble Me” — and followed in the 1990s with a successful solo career, beginning with the hit album, “Tigerlily,” which included “Carnival.”

“Keep Your Courage” emerges as a triumph over personal pain. Merchant went under the knife, risking paralysis, a lost voice and possibly death. She recovered in a neck brace, unable to see a doctor in person due to lockdowns, relying on friends and her soon-to-be-in college daughter.

“Music got me through the pandemic, and what I wanted to hear was thoughtful, beautiful music, or I wanted to dance,” she says. “Once I could move around again, I just wanted to dance. My daughter and I would have dance parties all the time.”

That upbeat vibe can be heard in “Come on, Aphrodite” and the funky “Tower of Babel,” with a video of Merchant dancing along.

In addition to Koomson-Davis, there are contributions from the Celtic folk group Lúnasa, Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and a cover of “Hunting the Wren” by Ian Lynch of the Irish band Lankum, a powerful song about patriarchy.

“As someone who cares about justice and someone who cares about young people and someone who cares about older people, I really appreciate the way she lives her life,” says Koomson-Davis. “Being able to sing her music, which is doing the same work, it’s an inspiration for me.”

The title of the album comes from the last song, “The Feast of Saint Valentine,” with the lyrics, “In the deep and darkest night of your soul/When you curse and rue the day that you did dare to give your heart away/Take courage in the thought that you belong.”

“The premise of the song is that love can be a battle that you endure,” Merchant says. “And there’s always the chance that you’ll be wounded in love. But the courage comes from having the strength to make yourself vulnerable enough to love.”

Singer Natalie Merchant has postponed her sold-out San Diego performance tonight at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, along with her Saturday show at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles.

Merchant, who rose to fame in the 1980s in the band 10,000 Maniacs, announced the postponements on her social media pages earlier this week. She has cited an unspecified illness as the reason.

The illness also prompted Merchant to postpone two other California concerts. Both had been scheduled for this week — Tuesday at Masonic Hall in San Francisco and Wednesday at Mountain Winery in Saratoga.

Three of her four postponed performances have now been rescheduled for next spring at the same venues. The new dates are: May 25 at Humphreys; May 29 in Saratoga; and May 30 in San Francisco. No new date has been announced yet for her pushed-back Saturday concert in Los Angeles.

Tickets for Merchant’s San Diego, Saratoga and San Francisco shows will be honored on the new dates. Refunds are available, through Oct. 28, at point of purchase.

Merchant 59, was diagnosed in 2019 with a rare, degenerative spine condition known as OPLL (short for ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament). She subsequently had surgery to replace three deteriorated vertebrae. The operation left her without her singing voice for 10 months.

She returned this year with the COVID-19 pandemic-inspired “Keep Your Courage,” her first full album of original material since 2014. She began her 2023 tour in April. Her most recent performance was Saturday in Portland.
