“Dr. Feelgood”: Motley Crue’s Track By Track Guide to 1989 Classic

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

This summer Mötley Crüe will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Dr. Feelgood by playing the 1989 album straight through on Crüe Fest 2. Luckily for them, the tour doesn’t begin until July 19th, because when Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx took Rolling Stone track by track through the disc, they had forgotten obscure gems like “She Goes Down” and “Slice Of Your Pie.” “The next time I do an interview I promise to listen to my own music,” says Sixx. “When you talked to Vince he probably had no idea too. I’ll probably listen to it on the way into rehearsals next month. We’re going to brush off the cobwebs then.” For now, here are their hazy memories of writing and recording Dr. Feelgood :

“Dr. Feelgood” Vince Neil: “I knew it was a classic from the time I heard that very first ‘bomp bomp bomp bomp’ — that intro just kind of grabs you. This song has been popular for 20 years. It was funny because I was watching VH1 and they had the Greatest Hard Rock Songs and ‘Feelgood’ was 15 or something. I was like, ‘Wow, of all time.’ Then you have Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith and AC/DC and ‘Feelgood.’ I was like, ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ It’s our signature song in some ways.” Nikki Sixx: “I remember it had a whole other set of lyrics. I had sort of forgotten that and I found them in a box recently. I was like, ‘oh, wow.’ It had a whole different theme to it. It was called ‘Dr. Feelgood,’ but a whole different thing lyrically. In the end it was inspired by drug dealers. Is there ever just one? A good drug addict always has more than one dealer.”

“Slice of Your Pie” Vince Neil: “That’s one of those … shit, I don’t know. I haven’t heard that song in a while. I can’t really comment on it. I’m going to be playing it soon, so I better start listening to it. Nikki Sixx: “I can’t even remember. I just remember that had a good groove to it.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Rattlesnake Shake” Vince Neil: “I always enjoyed that one. It’s got a good swing beat to it, and we added a horn section in. It’s got a good vibe to it. It’s almost got a little blues to it.” Nikki Sixx: “I can’t really remember what the song was about. There were some really good grooves going on with the music. I think we touched more back into the feels that were having with Shout at the Devil , which had a real sexy Zeppelin backbeat to it.”

“Kickstart My Heart” Vince Neil: “What can you say about ‘Kickstart’? It’s full blown in your face. It’s about Nikki dying.” Nikki Sixx: “That was a song I had written very quickly and had brought into rehearsal. I thought it was a throwaway, something that would belong on Too Fast For Love . It just really took on a life of its own and fit on the album a lot better than it should.”

“Without You” Vince Neil: “That’s a great ballad. I love singing that song. We’ve done that a few times at concerts. For me, it’s a great song to sing. It really lets me go and get my voice out there. I remember shooting the video down in Corpus Christ, Texas. We had a black panther and all kinds of crap. It was a goofy video, but it’s a great song.” Nikki Sixx: “That was a very simple idea for a song, which I had written a lyric about Heather Locklear and Tommy. They were coming over to my place all the time. I thought to myself one day, ‘Without You’ coming from Tommy’s perspective, life would not be the same. It was a good relationship at that time. It was sort of a romantic moment. I apologize for that.”

“Same Ol’ Situation” Vince Neil: “That’s about chicks leaving you for chicks. It happens. It definitely happens. It’s worse than a chick leaving you for a guy because there’s nothing you can do about it.” Nikki Sixx: “That was about a girl leaving a guy for a girl. The subject plagues men worldwide. I love it because when Elektra heard it they were like, ‘Oh, this is perfect for a single.’ In a Mötley fashion, we were like, ‘Wonderful. We’ll tell you later that it’s about lesbians.’ “

“Sticky Sweet” Vince Neil: “Didn’t we do that one already? Oh, no, that was ‘Slice of Your Pie’ … I remember the song — Bryan Adams and Jack Blades and Steven Tyler are on background vocals on it. We recorded this album in Vancouver, that’s where Bryan lives. It just so happens that we were recording Feelgood next to Aerosmith in the same studio recording Pump . Steven would come by and sing background vocals.” Nikki Sixx: “I can’t really remember that song. I think it was another big groove song. It will be cool to play live.”

Mötley Crüe Lose Battle in Ongoing War With Mick Mars

Mötley crüe drummer tommy lee accused of sexually assaulting woman in helicopter, mick mars never wants to speak to mötley crüe again — and 14 other things we learned.

“She Goes Down” Vince Neil: “There’s some sex being done in the background of that song if you listen real closely. We can’t say who’s doing it though, but prostitution is legal in Vancouver.” Nikki Sixx: “I can’t remember the lyric much. I think there’s a line in there like, ‘She goes down on all my friends/She goes down …” I think it’s about that other age old problem of loyalty, not that we were necessarily the most loyal of loyals ourselves — but its always easy when you have the microphone to point the microphone at other people. Robin Zander is on background vocals. Cheap Trick was always one of our biggest influences. We love that band.”

O.J. Simpson Executor Clarifies Stance on Goldmans Receiving Money From Estate

Supreme court justices compare bribes to taking a teacher to cheesecake factory, trump and his team are already lying about what happened in court, trump forced to see mean memes about him shared by prospective jurors.

“Don’t Go Away Mad” Vince Neil: “That’s a great song. We’ve been playing it for years. I love to play guitar and sing that song. It’s kind of a feel-good song. When that song comes on everybody wants to sing along with you.” Nikki Sixx: “I saw that line in a movie somewhere, I can’t even remember what movie. I thought, ‘Great idea for a song.’ A little tongue in check. A little sarcasm there.”

“Time For Change” Vince Neil: “That’s a big, big chorus song. I don’t think we’ve ever done it live. It’s almost gospel-y in parts.” Nikki Sixx: “I can’t even remember what that song is about. At the time we had been traveling a lot and had seen a lot of things around the planet. If I remember correctly, and I probably don’t, it had something to be with that.”

30 Years Ago: Motley Crue Launch Dr. Feelgood Tour With Club Show

With an explosive new album at the top of the charts and millions of fans all over the world, Motley Crue were one of the biggest bands on Earth in the fall of 1989. To kick-start their highly anticipated Dr. Feelgood Tour, the group decided to return to one of its favorite clubs with a performance at the legendary Whisky A Go Go on Oct. 5, 1989.

Motley Crue cut their teeth on the Sunset Strip, playing at such iconic spots as the Roxy and Gazzari’s. Still, the Whisky A Go Go always stood out among the rest and had served as a key predictor of the band’s success. In 1982, they sold out three nights at the iconic club, an achievement bassist Nikki Sixx calls  “one of the highlights of [their] career.”

In the band’s autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band , Sixx recalled telling his grandparents about the shows. “You’re not going to believe it! We sold out three nights at the Whisky. We fucking made it,” Sixx said on the phone call. His grandfather glibly replied, “Made what? Nobody even knows who you are.”

By 1989, everyone knew who they were. Motley Crue rode their electric blend of glam and heavy metal to dizzying heights, scoring hits throughout the ‘80s with songs like “Shout at the Devil,”   “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Home Sweet Home.” Along the way, they also built a reputation as one of rock’s wildest bands, with drug use, arrests and copious amounts of partying going hand-in-hand with their personae.

The Whisky was the location for many of these debauched antics, including the band’s fight with a local biker gang , and an occasion when Sixx abandoned a groupie mid-sexual escapade. “I tied a girl up in the Whisky bathroom with Mick's guitar cable, and then went to get a bump of blow from Tommy,” the bassist recalled to LA Weekly . “I forgot she was in there! I think Vince found her and everything was [fine].”

Fond -- and disturbing -- memories aside, the band knew that opening 1989’s Dr. Feelgood Tour at the Whisky would be a logistical nightmare. The group’s popularity had long outgrown the club’s small confines and advertising a Motley Crue show at their old hunting ground would undoubtedly cause pandemonium. With that in mind, the band booked the performance under its favorite pseudonym: the Four Skins.

Over the course of a powerful 16-song set, the band tore through many of its biggest hits. At one point, singer  Vince Neil paused to thank the crowd. “You guys fucking made it in, huh?” he joked to his adoring fans. “It’s been a long time since we played here, I’ll tell ya. But this is home to us!”

Footage from the performance would later be used in the music video for “Kickstart My Heart,” a track that was played live for the first time during the Whisky A Go Go set. Dr. Feelgood  became one of the band’s most acclaimed albums, scoring two Grammy nominations and selling more than 7 million copies worldwide.

Rumors regarding one last performance at the Whisky A Go Go swirled following Motley Crue’s announcement of The Final Tour  in 2014. "It's gotta be there. It's the only place to end it,” drummer Tommy Lee asserted , insisting that the club was a natural place to wrap the band’s touring career.

Though the idea was “romantic,” it ultimately did not come to fruition. Motley Crue instead played their final show at Staples Center in Los Angeles, about nine miles from their old Sunset Strip haunt. Still, they did manage a return to the Whisky in 2019, celebrating the premiere of their Netflix biopic The Dirt with an after-party at the club.

It's 1989, Yo: Motley Crue, Aerosmith Touring Together This Fall

motley crue world tour 1989

In September 1989, Mötley Crüe were introducing the country to Dr. Feelgood and Aerosmith were packing record stores with some extra Pump. This September, they'll be bringing songs from that era and beyond to concert venues across North America.

That's right: Two of rock's hardest-livin', hardest-rockin' acts ever are hooking up for the colossal, 27-date Route of All Evil Tour.

The bands ended weeks of speculation and Internet rumor Tuesday afternoon (June 20) by announcing plans for their Evil run, scheduled to kick off September 14 in Holmdel, New Jersey. The trek will make stops at outdoor amphitheatres in Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Dallas, before grinding to a halt in West Palm Beach, Florida, November 24.

The first handful of Evil tickets goes on sale Saturday.

With both bands' original lineups intact, the jaunt marks the first time these veteran bad boys have traveled the nation together.

Aerosmith -- who are still supporting their live record from last year, Rockin' the Joint -- will plunge themselves headfirst into the audience during each night of the road trip. The band is erecting a 70-foot-long ramp that will extend from the stage into the middle of the arena, giving fans an up-close-and-personal experience.

Meanwhile, the Crüe -- who're coming off one of 2005's most successful tours -- promise to roll out monstrous new production and tons of additional pyrotechnics so that fans who caught their Carnival of Sins Tour can expect a completely new experience this time around (see [article id="1513565"]"Motley Crue Back For Another Round In '06"[/article]).

motley crue world tour 1989

MOTLEY CRUE in 1989 was enjoying the moment of climax, sending out the best masterpiece “DR. FEELGOOD”. A live album that allows you to fully experience the scene is now available. “Performance in Paris on October 30, 1989” is imbued in this work. It is an excellent audience recording. The “DR. FEELGOOD” era was a big heyday when he pushed on to the biggest world tour of his career with the wind of a big hit. First of all, let’s check the position of the show by overlooking the huge activity scale while mixing our store collection.

● 1989 ・August 12th + 13th: “MOSCOW MUSIC PEACE FESTIVAL” 《“DR. FEELGOOD” will be released on September 1》 ・October 5: Hollywood performance ・October 14-November 6: Europe #1 (18 performances) ← Coco ・ November 16th-December 20th: North America # 1 (26 performances) ← * KANSAS CITY 1989 ● 1990 ・ January 3-April 15: North America # 2 (67 performances) ← *ALBANY 1990 ・ April 27-May 4: Australia (5 performances) ・ May 8-16: Japan (6 performances) ← ※ OSAKA 1990 ・ May 31-August 5: North America # 3 (44 performances) ● 1991 ・ August 14-September 18: Europe # 2 (13 performances) 《“DECADE OF DECADENCE 81-91” released on October 19》

This is the history from the completion of “DR. FEELGOOD” to the departure of Vince Neil. Over a period of two years, the number of performances exceeding 180 is the largest in his career. It is a schedule that conveys the tremendous popularity that can not keep up with demand no matter how many live performances are repeated. Under such circumstances, the Paris performance of this work is “Europe # 1” at the beginning. It was a concert corresponding to the 14th performance. This work, which was vacuum-packed from such a scene, is a masterpiece recording that combines sunny clarity and a strong core. Although it is a sound that seems to be an audience that sucks in real enthusiasm, the core that penetrates the air is powerful, and although it is not a close contact like a sound board, it is a sense of distance that makes you feel “Oh, close!”. And the master freshness is tremendous. After all, this work is a signature product that the person who recorded it digitized from the original master. Of course, there should be no dubbing deterioration, and each sound stretches beautifully without distortion or shaking. Because the air is transparent, the details are clearly transmitted, and the exquisite hall sound creates “beauty because it is an audience”. With such a fresh and clear sound, you can enjoy the wind at its peak with your whole body, while still not feeling fatigued from the tour. At our shop, the standard pro shot “KANSAS CITY 1989” of this tour and the masterpiece “OSAKA 1990” of the Japanese performance are also popular, but in fact, the set of this work is slightly different. Let’s sort it out by comparing.

● Dr. Feelgood (5 songs) ・Kickstart My Heart/Rattlesnake Shake/Same Ol’ Situation (S.O.S.)/Slice Of Your Pie/Dr. Feelgood ● Others (12 songs) ・Shout at the Devil: Red Hot/Too Young to Fall in Love/Shout At The Devil/Looks That Kill/Helter Skelter(★★) ・ Girls x 3: Wild Side / Girls, Girls, Girls / Jailhouse Rock (★) ・Others: Piece Of Your Action(★★)/Live Wire/Home Sweet Home/Smokin’ In The Boys Room * Note: “★” marks are songs that could not be heard in “OSAKA 1990”. In particular, the “★★” mark is a song that is not even in the standard pro shot “KANSAS CITY 1989”.

… and it looks like this. As you can see from the schedule mentioned above, this work is the 14th performance that the tour has just started. For that reason, some repertoires are still being played on a trial basis, and masterpieces such as the cover “Helter Skelter”, “Jailhouse Rock” and “Piece Of Your Action” are also being shown. Of course, it was judged that the shorter one would be tighter in terms of the flow of the show, but there is no need to worry about sagging only for this work. Both the band and the audience are feeling the tension that the tour has started, and the number of songs is pushed all at once. In the midst of all this, equipment trouble is a little interesting. Tommy Lee’s drum solo is a big climax of the show, but the sound suddenly breaks when the call and response hits the highlights. Even if the show is interrupted, “Tommy! Tommy!” After that, the show resumes with “Smokin’ in the Boys Room”, but you can experience the real disquieting mood with clear sound. “Exactly the climax.” Although it is suppressed by the big-boned performance sound, the huge cheers that spread widely radiate the heat of the big hit. The live performance of MOTLEY CRUE, which starts to play it and ignites it more and more, is also intense. This work is a new masterpiece that allows you to fully experience its subtleties and troubles with exquisite sound. MOTLEY CRUE has come back again, but there is no way this heat will return. The site of the climax that the times desired and blessed. Please enjoy this game to the fullest.

★ Excellent audience recording of “October 30, 1989 Paris performance”. It is a famous recording that has both clear clearness and a strong core, and the freshness that the person who recorded it has digitized from the original master is also the ultimate. The strong core reaches straight to your hand, and it is a sense of distance that makes you feel “Oh, it’s close!” “Helter Skelter”, “Jailhouse Rock”, “Piece Of Your Action”, which were not played in Japan, and equipment troubles with drum solos can be experienced at the best full show.

Kickstart My Heart/Rattlesnake Shake/Same Ol’ Situation (S.O.S.)/Slice Of Your Pie/Dr. Feelgood ●その他(12曲) ・シャウト・アット・ザ・デヴィル:Red Hot/Too Young to Fall in Love/Shout At The Devil/Looks That Kill/Helter Skelter(★★) ・ガールズ×3:Wild Side/Girls, Girls, Girls/Jailhouse Rock(★) ・その他:Piece Of Your Action(★★)/Live Wire/Home Sweet Home/Smokin’ In The Boys Room ※注:「★」印は『OSAKA 1990』で聴けなかった曲。
