Camp in Luxury at Walden Retreats’ Hill Country Safari Tents
Get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life: Stay in a luxury safari tent overlooking the Pedernales River at Walden Retreats in Johnson City. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp
Glamping, the mix of a wilderness escape and a luxury retreat, has found its way to the Highland Lakes. Located five miles from Johnson City, Walden Retreats has equipped its 500-square-foot safari tents with claw-foot bathtubs, leather lounge chairs, and plush bedding. Currently, two tents are available, both with one bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. [image id="28086" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] The 500 square-foot safari tents at Walden Retreats are a ‘glamping’ (glamorous camping) experience, offering five-star comfort in the great outdoors. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp The tents are hidden on 96 acres of relatively untouched wilderness in the Texas Hill Country. Rugged roads lined with prickly pear lead the way to the facilities, which are perched on a cliff overlooking the Pedernales River. The nearest Wi-Fi signal is miles away in Johnson City. Cellphone service is spotty at best. The closest neighbors are wild turkeys, deer, armadillos, and other wild creatures that call the Hill Country home. [image id="28077" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] A short, steep hike down to the natural spring-fed pool at Walden Retreats serves as a cool respite from the Texas heat, even when the rest of the river is dry. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp “Texas looks a lot like the safari experiences in East Africa, so choosing safari-style tents seemed like a natural fit,” said Walden Retreats CEO Blake Smith, who spent two years living in Uganda. “We’re giving people the opportunity to cook and build a campfire on their own but in a very refined and sophisticated kind of setting.” Smith considered other options for his Hill Country haven such as yurts, teepees, and geodesic domes. In the end, he felt safari tents were the most fitting for the weather and geographical landscape. [image id="28083" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] Walden Retreats provides a Field Guide for its guests with information on the grounds, camping basics, and things to do in Johnson City. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp “What we’re trying to do is marry the DIY camping experience that you would traditionally have at a campsite with nicer rooms and pre-setup accommodations,” Smith said. “Guests don’t have to worry about the drudgery of setting up a tent, blowing up an air mattress, or even cutting their own firewood.” With top-tier amenities such as Aesop bath products, a Tivoli bluetooth radio, Wüsthof knives, and a thermal-drip coffee maker, guests can relax in luxury while enjoying the beauty and quiet of a primitive setting. [image id="28085" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] With fine linens, plus bedding, and air conditioning, Walden Retreats has everything you need for the most luxurious camping experience imaginable. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp The creative touch behind the interior design, Sarah Contrucci Smith, is founder and lead designer for Ara Collective, which collaborates directly with master artisans from around the world. “We wanted the tents to feel well-designed and thoughtful — simple, but luxurious,” Contrucci Smith said. “Bringing in a lot of Latin American accents makes the space feel collected. There are the items I sourced on my trips to Mexico and Guatamala specifically for Walden and vintage pieces from Ara Collective’s line that I knew I wanted in a specific spot.” [image id="28075" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] The tent interiors are bright and airy. The textures and small details throughout the space make it feel like a home away from home. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp The handmade rugs, blankets, baskets, and pillows make the space feel cozy and personal. Each tent has a different design and color palette as well — an artisan world apart from a carbon-copy hotel room. “I think that people are looking for more personal experiences with the places they’re staying,” Contrucci Smith said. “That’s the difference between Walden and a hotel. You don’t get that personal element with a hotel.” [image id="28074" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] ‘We all need to slow down,’ said Contrucci Smith, who designed several sitting areas for guests to post up and relax with a book in hand. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp Hotels aren’t nestled in the wilderness either. Here, the Pedernales River snakes around the edge of the property, and a natural spring-fed pool stays cool and full even when the river has dried up from drought. The water’s edge is a 10-minute hike down a steep but well-groomed path. Guests can enjoy their time by the water swimming, fishing, canoeing, or just relaxing in the sunshine. The property is a beautiful and quintessential representation of the Texas Hill Country. [image id="28078" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] The Pedernales River cuts through the property, offering the opportunity to hang out by the water. Guests can take out the canoe and cast a line or relax on the shore and catch a tan. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp In creating a sanctuary for guests to relax, Blake Smith found Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden” a perfect fit for the retreat’s name. Thoreau wrote about living away from society and spending time with nature. “‘Walden’ sets the tone for what type of place we’re trying to create,” Smith said. “I spent a lot of time thinking about the name because I wanted it to communicate what type of experience you would have.” [image id="28079" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] Guests can brew a fresh a cup of coffee and slide into the beautiful clawfoot tub — an excellent spot to soak, read, and relax. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp Although he started small with two safari tents to prove his concept, Smith plans to eventually expand to 16 tents. They will be spread across the property so each maintains a feeling of space and privacy. Hiking and mountain-biking trails are also planned as well as a swimming pool and a pavilion for a central gathering point. An expert in the hospitality business, Smith seeks to provide comfort, luxury, relaxation, and a good time. [image id="28076" title="Walden Retreats, Johnson City"] Thoreau’s ‘Walden’ is about the author’s pursuit of refuge to reflect on nature, the earth, and humanity. He offers a simple concept of getting away from society, even if just for a little while. Staff photo by JoAnna Kopp “That’s what I love the most about Walden,” he said. “The guests come out here, and I know they’re going to have a really great time. That gives me a lot of personal satisfaction.” Visit waldenretreats.com to book a weekend in the wilderness. Contact (830) 321-0295 or [email protected] for more information.

Savannah’s Meadow, Celeste
A hot commodity in North Texas, Savannah’s Meadow offers two tree houses: The Bare Creek Hollow Treehouse and Majestic Oak Treehouse, both of which could’ve been plucked from a children’s fairytale book. Bare Creek Hollow is about three stories off the ground and has a living room, balcony, kitchen, and full bathroom, while Majestic Oak, also about three stories off the ground, has a hot tub and pool below, plus a kitchen, sky lounge, and a deck. A living tree runs through the middle of Majestic Oak, giving the space a real woodsy feel. Savannah’s Meadow is open from March 1 through November 1, and reservations go fast, so be sure to book far in advance.
The Retreat on the Hill, Cottonwood Shores
Courtesy of The Retreat on The Hill
Overlooking Lake Marble Falls and Lake LBJ, The Retreat on the Hill is a “glampominium” site with safari tents, teepees, and luxury tents, all with private decks. The Stardome Suite is about 100 feet over Horseshoe Bay, offering stunning views from the clear-domed suite with a private deck, fire pit, private restroom, and indoor and outdoor showers. The Bird’s Nest is a bit more primitive option, with an open concept that’s not completely waterproof. Plus, it has “The Egg,” which keeps you dry during rain. Other options include a luxurious suite made from a shipping container, and Sunset Cliff House, an A-frame oasis with a 15-foot cathedral ceiling, clear side walls, a glass-sided tub, and a stargazing balcony.
Cypress Valley, Spicewood
Courtesy of Cypress Valley
After playing lawn games like bocce ball and cornhole, or taking an afternoon nap in a hammock, find peace and quiet at one of the tree houses at Cypress Valley . Yoki Treehouse is perched in a cypress tree above a ravine and includes a king-size bed, deck, private bathroom, kitchenette, and a small loft for a third person. The Nest is a bit larger and suitable for a family, and it features round walls, a green roof, and pallet walls that support up-cycling. Willow and Juniper tree houses are solar powered and come with a porch, but have a shared community space with shared bathrooms, picnic tables, and a swimming pool. There’s also Lofthaven, a yurt constructed around the trunk of a cypress tree; the bathhouse and kitchenette are connected to the bedroom by a suspension bridge.
Collective Retreats, Wimberley

So What Exactly is Glamping?
Several people have asked me, “So what exactly is glamping? What does glamping mean?”
Well, think of glamping as fancy or luxury camping. If you are like me and enjoy nature but prefer to shower and sleep in a real bed every night, you might like glamping.
Glamping allows you to enjoy all the joy of being in a small town and nature that comes with camping without giving up the good stuff that comes with being comfortable, like a king-size bed, electricity, air conditioning, and a bathroom.
Glamping accommodations range in style and amenities. You can glamp in a cabin, a yurt, a teepee, a wagon, an Airstream, or even tents.
Some sites are fully furnished and include a private bathroom and a great outdoor space with a hot tub under the stars. I don’t know about you, but a hot tub under the stars and a king-size bed sounds great!
While others are more primitive and could include tents with a shared bathroom and outdoor fire pit, making them a true glamping retreat.

The Lone Star State has many options to consider when planning your luxury camping getaway.
This state has almost every glamping type, including yurts, teepees, safari tents, bubbles, canvas tents, cabins, treehouses, old railroad cars, and more!

Glamping in Texas: Texas weather
I often describe the weather in Texas as bipolar. You know, if you don’t like it wait a little while because it will change.
The weather will vary depending on where you are in the state (and remember, it is a HUGE state).
South Texas is notorious for long, hot, humid summers and mild winters; while northern areas can get colder in the winters, it is also hot and humid in the summers.
If you choose Texas as a glamping destination in the summer months, we recommend being near swimming holes to cool off and escape the heat.
If traveling in the winter, consider the Texas Hill Country for mild, enjoyable weather conditions.

My days of crawling in and out of a two-person tent are in the distant past. Glamping sounds like something I'd embrace. Mind you, I love the idea of staying in a cell block not only because of what must be an interesting backstory but I do like seeing old buildings repurposed rather than destroyed.
Sunday 25th of July 2021
I am with you, Anne. No more sleeping on the ground for us!! And yes, we love it when places repurpose old buildings also. They make for such a cool experience.

Sandwiched in between Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park is Basecamp Terlingua , a Chihuahuan Desert gem with a variety of glamping options including casitas, Lotus Tents, and even “bubbles.” The casitas are stunning adobe dwellings complete with outdoor showers and firepits, and the Lotus Tents are onion-shaped tents that are a bit more rugged, as they’re not sealed or insulated, but come with an evaporative cooler in the summer months and a space heater in the winter. Bubbles are surely the site's more unique offering — vinyl, see-through domes placed away from other accommodations for privacy and stargazing.
Stay Onera, Fredericksburg
Modern design meets natural beauty with Stay Onera , located just a few minutes from Main Street in Fredericksburg , Texas. Perfectly placed between — and in — the trees, you’ll find aesthetically gorgeous digs with private soaking tubs, fire pits, yoga decks, efficiency kitchens, hammocks, private bathrooms, and plush beds. The Live Oak Lodge accommodation has its own plunge pool, while Pecan Haus, Cedar Haus, and Juniper have rooftop decks for those glorious Texas sunsets.
Palo Duro Glamping, Canyon
Horned frogs, coyotes, turkeys, longhorns, bobcats, and a variety of birds call Palo Duro Canyon State Park home, and visitors love coming here for the wildlife plus geological formations like hoodoos. Located in the Panhandle, Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon system in the U.S., and exploring here means hiking, horseback riding, and of course, glamping. "Glampsites" at Palo Duro Glamping are canvas-covered tents with covered porches, air conditioning, hammocks, fire pits, games, fridges and coffee makers, and gas grills. Hiking trails are nearby, and cabins are a short walk from the Palo Duro Trading Post, where you can pick up a burger kit. Amenities include free breakfast, complimentary ice cream, s’mores kits, linens, towels, and wagons for hauling your gear to your glampsite.
Laughing Hen Silos, La Grange
Eight miles from the town of Round Top, Texas, you’ll find Laughing Hen Silos , where three converted silos offer rustic decor, chandeliers dangling from high ceilings, air conditioning, private front porches, mini fridges, and coffee makers. All three silos have private bathrooms and views of the 11-acre property.
Lucky Arrow Retreat, Dripping Springs
Lucky Arrow Retreat in Dripping Springs offers an array of glamping experiences, including cabins, safari tents, yurts, and porch houses. The 16 Courtyard Cabins are grouped together in fours around a courtyard with two hot tubs and a fire pit, while the Breezeway Cabins have their own hot tubs and large breezeway. Porch Houses have their own private chiminea fire pits and wraparound covered porches, while yurts offer a more rustic experience — there’s no private bathroom, but a common shower house is nearby. Three safari tents all have clawfoot tubs and a record player, and everyone has access to the communal BYOB beer garden, heated pool, and ax-throwing area.
Walden Retreats, Johnson City
Set on 96 acres along the Pedernales River in Texas Hill Country, Walden Retreats turns the dial all the way with its glamping accommodations. Luxury safari tents make you feel as if you were on an actual safari adventure with handmade textiles, white linens, and wood paneling that creates an elevated-yet-comforting feel. The tents have wraparound decks, private outdoor showers, king beds, private ensuite bathrooms, clawfoot tubs, and private fire pits. Suites have an added living room and a cast iron wood stove.
StarStruck Glamping, Alpine
Lots of people come to the Big Bend region of Texas to hike through endless desert terrain or kayak along the Rio Grande. But visitors also flock to the area for its protected dark skies, which allow you to see the Milky Way and lots of celestial activity. If you're looking to stargaze, book a few nights at StarStruck Glamping . Located within the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, the largest Protected Dark Sky Reserve in the world, StarStruck offers geodesic domes that allow you to see mountains, stars, and incredible sunsets and sunrises, all from the comfort of your bed. Every dome has a private outdoor lounge, a shaded dining and cooking area, a bed and bathroom, a fire pit, heating and cooling, a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and even telescopes.
Wahwahtaysee Resort, Kingsbury
Located on more than 100 acres in Kingsbury, Texas, Wahwahtaysee Resort offers posh safari tents that were custom made in South Africa. Tents include plush beds, ensuite bathrooms, a deck and outdoor shower, air conditioning and heating, and a kitchenette with dining area. Golf carts for explore the land are also provided. Grill up some dinner on your included Green Egg or gas grill, pick pecans in the 150-year-old pecan orchard, or find a private beach along the San Marcos River for a day of solitude. The resort also has walking trails, bocce ball, and beach volleyball.
Living Waters on Lake Travis, Spicewood
If you don’t want to stay in the blush-colored main house at Living Waters on Lake Travis , they also have some fun glamping options, including the Firefly Room, a safari tent for two with a private bath and a gorgeous deck for taking in sunsets on Lake Travis. There’s also the Love Shack, a smaller glamping tent, and funky eco-cabins that still give glamping vibes. The Romantic Red eco-cabin has a detached bathroom and private wine deck, and The Loft has a private bathroom and deck. On-site amenities include walking trails, yoga, swimming, and even a floating cabin for lake hangs.
Atop a ridge with stunning views of Hill Country is Collective Retreats in Wimberley. These safari-style tents might seem basic from the outside, but take a step inside and you’ll find gorgeous chandeliers, wood-paneled details, and comfortable furniture that’s also aesthetically pleasing with clean lines and comforting pillows and throws. Tents include wood-burning stoves, private decks, and ensuite bathrooms. Collective Retreats also offers in-tent massages, sound meditations, campfire s’mores, hiking, and even a Texas barbecue experience, where a curated box is delivered to your tent with all the ingredients you need for a Texas dinner.
