Where to see Leopard in Kenya
The leopard is not uncommon. The most numerous of Africa’s big cats, it occurs in all major conservation areas and across most habitats. Nonetheless, its grace and elusiveness make it a unique safari drawcard.
Quick facts about Leopard
The leopard is a powerful and versatile predator that varies greatly in size and habitat. It uses stealth and camouflage to ambush prey at close quarters, typically taking small to medium-sized antelopes, though everything from birds to young giraffes may make the menu. Most active at night, leopards are agile climbers and unique among big cats in using trees as ‘larders’ for prey. Key identification features include a long tail, usually curled at the white tip, and beautiful rosette patterning (unlike a cheetah’s solid spots). Males are around one-third larger than females, with a larger head and more jowly throat. Adults are largely solitary, though cubs may remain with their mothers for 18 months.

Where to see leopards in Africa
Leopards are widespread but good at hiding. By day, you may spy one in a tree. At dawn and dusk, they become more active on the ground. Night drives can be productive.
Top tips for viewing leopards
Leopards occur everywhere from mountains to rainforests but are best seen in savannah and woodland habitats. Highly territorial, they often show up repeatedly in the same area. Classic leopard country includes river loops with large trees and rocky kopjes surrounded by open bush. Even if invisible, a leopard’s presence is often betrayed by the alarm calls of prey, such as baboons, impala or even guinea-fowl. Be patient and you might get lucky. Certain locations, such as Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, are famed for leopard sightings. But all major conservation areas, from the Kalahari to the Maasai Mara , offer a chance, especially where guides know the habitats and whereabouts of individual cats. Night drives increase the chances further. Listen out after dark for the distinctive deep territorial call, which resembles the rasp of a saw.

Leopard Safaris
Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris.
The leopard stirs something in everyone. Not only are they strikingly beautiful, but their golden spotted coats give them a remarkable camouflage ability. The fact that they’re so difficult to spot puts them at the top of most safari lists. Nothing beats seeing these beauties in the wild.
It’s vital to be in the right area to spot a leopard, but there are also specialised leopard parks and reserves where these cats flourish. This is because leopards are highly effective and versatile cats. They have a diverse diet and can survive in a broad vegetation. Leopards are the only big cats whose numbers have actually increased despite shrinking habitat, pressure from poaching and leopard skin trade.
This elusive and beautiful cat is the pinnacle of a safari experience

Where to spot the elusive cat
Tuesday, 3 May 2022
There are many reasons why leopards are at the top of African safari request lists. Breathtakingly beautiful, charismatic, powerful, elusive, mysterious, and endlessly unpredictable – no one adjective can fully capture the wild essence of these impressive cats. Whether draped lazily across a tree bough or concealing themselves for a slow stalk and decisive pounce, no one leopard sighting is ever the same. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite leopard viewing destinations for (almost) guaranteed sightings.
1. The Greater Kruger, South Africa
This corner of South Africa is famous for its spectacular leopard encounters, especially in the southern regions of the Greater Kruger , where leopard densities are at their highest. Private reserves like Sabi Sands Game Reserve have a long history of leopard habituation, and the leopards here are probably the most relaxed on the continent. The guides and trackers in these areas are intimately familiar with the territories and movements of their spotted comrades and will provide a background (and even lineage) of the individuals seen.
2. South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Vying with the Greater Kruger for the highest leopard densities on the continent, South Luangwa National Park is a haven for these elegant cats. The verdant floodplains, oxbow lakes, and riverine forests along the Luangwa River – the region’s lifeblood – are perfect pardine territory. Guests are regularly treated to multiple leopard sightings in a day.
3. Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana
The wetlands, grasslands, and thickets of the Okavango Delta teem with wildlife and predators abound in this rich wilderness. While animal viewing in Moremi Game Reserve is typically at its best during the dry season, wild dog and leopard sightings are the norm year-round.
4. Samburu National Park, Kenya
Unofficially designated as the leopard capital of Kenya, arid and dramatic Samburu’s rocky outcrops and striking riverine trees provide perfect vantage points where leopards can strike the typical photographic pose. And with Samburu being somewhat off the beaten African safari track, chances are you won’t have to share your sighting with a crowd of eager tourists.
5. The Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem, Kenya and Tanzania
Leopard densities in the Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem are high, and, like our first four destinations, a sighting of at least one individual is all but guaranteed. However, what sets this region apart is the magnificent scenery, which has the potential to change the entire character of a sighting. Instead of lurking in the thickets, the leopards of Mara-Serengeti are often obliged to move in the open or through tall grassland. The sight of a leopard dwarfed by the sheer scale of the expansive Maasai Mara or renowned Serengeti is not easily forgotten. Throw in typical leopard unpredictability and the chaos of the Great Migration, and the scene is set for genuinely extraordinary and action-packed encounters.
6. Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa & Botswana
With their effortless beauty, leopards are suited to almost any setting but are perhaps most breath-taking against the ochre and gold palette of the Kalahari Desert . Naturally, the leopard population here occurs at lower densities, and sightings are not necessarily a given. However, the sparse vegetation works to the advantage of eagle-eyed visitors.
7. Laikipia County, Kenya
Laikipia County is one for the leopard connoisseur – those fortunate enough to have travelled and filled many a memory card with pictures of leopards from around the continent. The county, and Loisaba Conservancy, in particular, has recently found social media acclaim with the revelation that it is home to unusual black leopards. These mysterious cats have a rare genetic mutation that results in melanism and are believed to be more common in forested areas where their atypical colouring works to hide them in the shadows. Of course, they are elusive, and there are no guarantees – but isn’t anticipation half the fun of an African safari?
Special mention: Nyika National Park, Malawi
Malawi’s concerted conservation efforts have borne exceptional biodiversity and resulted in a nascent tourism industry offering singular safari experiences. Nyika National Park extends across the vast Nyika Plateau, an enormous granitic dome over 2000 metres above sea level. The rolling hills are home to the highest density of leopards in Malawi, and while the secretive cats are still somewhat shy, sightings are becoming increasingly common, particularly at night. The positive feedback loop of growing numbers of tourists supplementing conservation funding has gone a long way to securing the future of one of Africa’s most unique wildernesses.

Quick facts about Leopards In Africa
Leopards In Africa – Everything you Need to know about the Elusive leopards of Africa.
Leopards lie await of unsuspecting ungulates such as impala, kobs, and zebra. Due to the fear of losing their days catch to the lions and hyenas, leopards prefer to carry their catch high into the trees where they feast on their meal without much interruption. Leopards In Africa, are also been known to use high-standing vantage points to seek out their prey before creeping through the long grass and making the fatal attack.Despite being somewhat difficult to locate due to their solitary nature, leopards In Africa can be seen during game drives in the majority of African safari destinations. At Realm Africa Safaris™ we put you in the right place at the right time to see these big cats and particularly recommend Kenya and Tanzania for fantastic wildlife encounters.

Places to See Leopards in Africa
Places to See Leopards in Africa : Of the four “big cats” in the genus Panthera—the tiger, lion, and jaguar are the other three—the leopard (Panthera pardus) is the brightest, smallest, and strongest climber. Stronger climbing muscles can even attach to specific attachment points on their shoulder blades. Even when they are hunting and feeding, they spend a lot of time in trees. Most of Kenya’s national parks and Reserves provide wildlife safaris where you can see these magnificent animals.
Between dusk and dawn is when leopards are most active. Although they are mostly solitary, nocturnal creatures, each one has a home range that overlaps with its neighbours. Males have a wider range, and the ranges of multiple females frequently overlap with those of a single male. Urine and claw markings are used to identify ranges. After a three-month gestation period, the female gives birth to one litter of two or three cubs. She gives up her nomad way of life until the cubs are big enough to go with her. For the first eight weeks, she hides them, then shifts them around until they reach the age when they can begin learning to hunt. In six or seven weeks, they have their first taste of meat, and after about three months, they cease nursing. For almost two years, the cubs stay with their mothers. Their lifespan is between 12 and 17 years.
Important characteristics for identification are a long tail that is typically curled at the white tip and stunning rosette patterning, which differs from a cheetah’s solid spots. Males have a bigger head and a more jowly throat than females, making them about one-third larger.
Leopards are the most elusive of Africa’s big cats and the most difficult of the Big Five to locate, even though they are the most widely distributed wild cat species, found throughout Southern Africa. This is because they are loners and, being ambush hunters, they stay hidden in places with plenty of trees and dense undergrowth on purpose. The leopard is a nocturnal animal in many areas of its range. There are still several safari locations that are renowned for having strong leopard populations, despite the fact that poaching, habitat destruction, and conflicts with farmers have all contributed to a drop in the species’ worldwide population. Not only should you visit these hotspots for leopards, but you should also schedule night drives, keep an eye up (leopards spend a lot of time sleeping in trees), and listen for the alarm sounds of antelope and baboons, among other prey animals.

2:Southern Luangwa National park
South Luangwa National Park sits in east Zambia, in the Luangwa Valley. The region is also referred to as the Valley of the Leopard, a fitting appellation considering that it is home to Africa’s greatest population of the magnificent spotted cats. One leopard is thought to exist for every two square kilometres, according to estimates. South Luangwa is a good location for leopards because of its remarkable diversity of prey and its thick forest cover, which offers the shelter required for ambush strikes. Known for their audacity, South Luangwa’s leopards are frequently spotted throughout the day, reclining in branches and occasionally hunting right in front of safari vehicles. Drives at night are permitted, which is unusual for a national park and increases your chances of spotting a leopard in the wild. Walking safaris are another popular feature of the park. Visit during the late dry season (August to October) for the finest sightings, as this is when animals concentrate near waterholes and it is easiest to see leopards.
3:Sabi Sands Game Reserve, South Africa
While South Luangwa may have the highest concentration of leopards, South Africa’s Sabi Sands Game Reserve is the most well-known spot in Africa for leopard sightings worldwide. It is situated on the unfenced border that separates it from Kruger National Park on the west. Over forty years of researching the park’s leopards has allowed rangers at the heart of the reserve, Londolozi Lodge, to identify individual resident cats. There’s a strong likelihood of a close encounter because of their extensive awareness of each cat’s behaviours and territories. Although Londolozi’s database only lists 20 named leopards, during an 11-month period, they recorded approximately 50 individuals in the area, including visiting nomads. Night game drives offer some of the best sightings, and rangers are free to drive off-road to improve their position if they discover a leopard. For those who are serious about improving their photography, the lodge also provides specialised big cat photography excursions.
4:Okonjima Nature Reserve, Namibia
To almost certain seeing leopards, visit the Okonjima Nature Reserve located in the northern region of Namibia. Nestled in the Omboroko Mountains’ foothills, The AfriCat Foundation conducts research, rehabilitates injured predators, and implements community education programmes within the reserve. As part of a density study project, rescued leopards wear radio tracking collars and are allowed to roam freely across the 200 square kilometre reserve. While certain aficionados of safari purists would object to the notion of being guided to a sighting via satellite, it’s an excellent method of getting up close and while supporting conservation efforts. A night drive offers the opportunity to witness caracals, aardwolves, brown hyenas, and bat-eared foxes. You can also track cheetahs on foot. Some of the bush villas and camps offer the opportunity to observe leopards from the comfort of your own temporary home, thanks to nocturnal hides and floodlit waterholes.
5: Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana
In Botswana, there are plenty of great spots to see leopards; the Okavango Delta ’s periphery offers the best opportunities. These include the Linyati and Savuti reserves (between the Okavango and Chobe National Park ), but the Moremi Game Reserve is regarded by many as the top travel destination. The Khwai River Region, which is located in the eastern part of the Delta, is home to many animals due to its perennial water pools and dense forest, which enables leopards to approach their prey stealthily. Leopard sightings during the day are almost routine due to the abundance of these animals. You will have to stay outside the reserve on a private concession, such as the opulent Khwai River Lodge, if you really want to see a night safari.
It’s suggested to go on at least one night drive, if only for the excitement of looking around in the dark to see if someone is wearing a spotlight. Along with lions and cheetahs, the endangered African wild dog can also be found in Moremi Game Reserve and the concessions that encircle it.

Tanzania activities
What documents do I need to travel to Tanzania?
A visa is required when traveling to Tanzania. Currently, this can be obtained online, on arrival at airports and border crossings, and is valid for 90 days. A valid passport is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Tanzania.
Do lodges and camps have mosquito nets?
We carefully select the accommodation on safari so that you are comfortable and relaxed and can experience a one-of-a-kind atmosphere during your safari. All rooms/tents during your safari are fitted with mosquito nets or are insect-proofed to protect you against bites. You are also advised to use insect repellent to further protect yourself, especially outdoors in the evenings.
Is Tanzania safe to travel to?
Tanzania is generally considered a safe destination for safari-goers. Visitors should follow the safety guidelines provided and take necessary precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night or leaving valuables unattended.
When does the wildebeest migration take place?
The wildebeest migration takes place in Tanzania typically between the months of November to August, although the timing can vary slightly depending on the weather patterns each year. The migration is a continuous movement of around 1.5 million wildebeest and large numbers of zebras and gazelles across the Serengeti plains in Tanzania in search of fresh grazing land and water. In November and December, the herds of wildebeest can be found in the northern Serengeti near the Kenyan border, where they start calving. As the rains stop and the dry season sets in, the herds begin to move south in search of water and fresh grazing. By April and May, the herds are usually in the central Serengeti. By June, the wildebeest and other herbivores gather at the Grumeti River, where they must cross to continue their journey south. By July, the herds are usually in the eastern Serengeti; by August, they move into the northern region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Is it safe to drink water in Tanzania?
Drinking tap water in Tanzania is generally unsafe, as it may contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause illnesses such as typhoid, cholera, and hepatitis A. Drinking only bottled or filtered water is important to avoid getting sick. You can buy bottled water at most shops, hotels, and restaurants in Tanzania. When traveling in Tanzania, it’s also important to avoid drinking water from sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams, which may also contain harmful bacteria and parasites. Instead, use bottled or filtered water to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth after brushing. Additionally, avoiding ice in drinks and peeling fruits and vegetables before eating them is a good idea to reduce the risk of ingesting contaminated water.
What are the best national parks to visit in Tanzania for a safari?
Tanzania is home to many national parks, but the most popular ones for safaris are Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park.
What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on a Tanzania safari?
Tanzania is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, and many species of birds.
What is the best time of year to go on a Tanzania safari?
The best time to go on a Tanzania safari depends on your preferences. The dry season from June to October is the best time for game viewing, but it can be crowded and more expensive. The wet season from November to May offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices, but some parks may be closed due to flooding.
What kind of transportation will be used during my safari?
Our safaris are in 4×4 vehicles, which are ideal for navigating the rugged terrain of the national parks. Some safaris may also include flights to remote areas or walking safaris.
What should I wear on my safari?
It’s important to dress in layers and pack versatile, easy-to-wash, and dry clothing. Don’t forget also to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small backpack to carry your essentials while on safari. Choose comfortable, practical, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. Lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton or linen shirts, pants, and shorts. Long-sleeved shirts and pants can also help protect you from the sun, insects, and thorny bushes. Neutral-colored clothing such as khaki, beige, or olive green. Avoid bright colors or patterns, as they can scare off wildlife or attract insects. Closed-toe shoes such as sneakers or hiking boots for walking safaris or nature walks. Sandals or flip-flops can be worn around camp but may not provide enough protection for outdoor activities. A hat or cap to protect your head and face from the sun. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the bright sunlight. A light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings and evenings. Swimwear if you plan to visit a lodge or camp with a swimming pool. A rain jacket or poncho if you’re traveling during the rainy season.
What is the tipping etiquette for safari guides and mountain crews on trips like this?
Tipping is highly appreciated at the end of safari/mountain climb. The size of tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. You should prepare an envelope after your trek for your tip money at the Hotel. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ Shillings or a combination of these. Please ask the Safari/Climbing coordinator at the Hotel for advice.
RECOMMENDED TIP:
Mountain Climbs : $25-50 USD per Day per Climber to be shared between guides, chefs and porters.
Safaris : Driver/Guide: $35-50 USD per Day per Car. If it is a camping safari there will be a tip for the cook $10 USD per Day.
THESE ARE JUST GUIDELINES AND TIPS CAN BE GIVEN TO SAFARI STAFF/MOUNTAIN CREW ACCORDING TO SERVICES PROVIDED.

Leopards in Kenya
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is the shiniest, smallest and the strongest climber of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera, the other three being the tiger, lion, and jaguar. Their shoulder blades even have special attachment sites for stronger climbing muscles. They spend much of their time in trees even when stalking prey and for eating. In Kenya, you can spot these sublime creatures while on a wildlife safari in most of Kenya's National Parks and Reserves.
Leopards are most active between sunset and sunrise. They are predominantly nocturnal, solitary animals, but each individual has a home range that overlaps with its neighbors. Males have a larger range, and a single male’s range will often overlap with the range of several females. Ranges are marked with urine and claw marks.
The females gives birth to a litter of two or three cubs after a gestation period of three months. TShe abandons her nomadic lifestyle until the cubs are large enough to accompany her. She keeps them hidden for the first eight weeks and moves them from one location to the next until they are old enough to start learning to hunt. They get their first taste of meat in six or seven weeks and stop suckling after about three months. The cubs continue to live with their mothers for about two years. They have a longevity of about 12-17 years.
Key identification features include a long tail, usually curled at the white tip, and beautiful rosette patterning (unlike a cheetah’s solid spots). Males are around one-third larger than females, with a larger head and more jowly throat.
Their diet fluctuates with prey availability, which ranges from strong-scented carrion, fish, reptiles, and birds to mammals such as rodents, hares, warthogs, antelopes, and baboons.
