Senegal and The Gambia: A Cultural and Wildlife Odyssey

Senegal and The Gambia: A Cultural and Wildlife Odyssey

Desert lands, tropical forests and magnificent coasts. On this unique holiday in West Africa we discover two different nations: tropical Gambia and exotic Senegal. We walk through French colonial towns, see prolific birdlife and visit the megalithic stone circles at Wassu. We also explore some of the region's finest wildlife parks, cruise down the Gambia River and venture into the Saloum Delta by traditional pirogue canoe.

Highlights: ♦  Djoudj - one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world ♦ Saloum Delta - explore the river delta by a boat through mangroves and aquatic birds ♦ Isle de Goree - a tranquil island with tragic history and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 1. Dakar Arrival to the capital of Senegal - Dakar. Transfer to the hotel for overnight. -/-/-

Day 2. Dakar - Île de Gorée (Gore Island) - Dakar. We will start the day with a city tour in Dakar: the Cathedral, Presidential lodge, Monument of African Renaissance, National museum, Sandaga market, Kermel market and Simboudioune market. In the afternoon, we will take the ferry to the historical Gore Island where we spend a couple of hours. The island used to be one of the biggest slave-trading centers on the African coast. It is estimated that about 20 million slaves passed through the island during its most active years - between 16th and 19th century. Here we will see The House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) - the place where hundreds of slaves were held before boarding the ships to be exported. Nowadays it functions as a museum and a memorial to these horrific times. There are no sealed roads and no cars on this island, just narrow alleyways with colonial brick buildings. Back to Dakar for overnight. B/-/-

Day 3. Dakar - Mbour - Toubakouta Our first stop for the day is the town of Mbour, about 80 kilometers south of Dakar. It is home to one of the largest fishing ports in the country and fishing plays a central role in the everyday life of the locals. Here we will learn more about the local life, the traditional way of fishing and visit the local fish market. After that, we continue towards the village of Toubakouta, located near the Saloum Delta . The rest of the day is dedicated to exploring the delta - a unique ecosystem that boasts an abundance of wildlife, making it a paradise for nature lovers and birdwatchers. It is home to over 200 species of birds, including the iconic pink flamingos, pelicans, and various migratory birds. Overnight in a camp in Toubakouta or nearby.  B/-/-

Day 4. Toubakouta - Sipo Village - Bird island - Toubakouta Today we will dive deeper into the local culture of the delta. We will start with a short boat ride through the mangrove forests to reach the island village of Sipo, home to a small community of about 100 people. We will walk around the hay houses, enjoy the beach views and soak in the tranquil atmosphere and the slow life of the village. Until just a few years ago, Sipo was the only village in the region that had a female chief - the famed and respected Queen of Sipo. She had been the queen of the island for more than 70 years and was known as a healer in her community, helping local women in childbirth. She was also looking after the Serer prayer places and happily received courtesy visits from travelers, which made her a kind of celebrity in the adventure travel community. When she passed away in 2019, her son inherited the chiefdom and continues to welcome travellers to his community and spread his mother's legacy. We will then continue with a visit to Bird Island, where we can spot many of the bird species the region is known for, including pelicans and migratory birds. We will then head back to Toubakouta for overnight. B/-/-

Day 5. Toubakouta - Georgetown (the Gambia) Today we have a long drive ahead of us (8-9 hours). We will cross the border between Senegal and The Gambia and drive to Janjanbureh (formerly known as Georgetown) where we will spend the night in a camp. B/-/-

Day 6. Baboon Island - Wassu Stone Circles - Tendaba Our first stop for today will be the Wassu Stone Circles, also known as The Circles of Senegambia - one of the largest groups of megalithic stone circles in the world and probably one of the most mysterious sites in Africa. The stones are believed to date back between the 23rd century B.C. and the 16th century A.D. There are many, sometimes contradicting beliefs about the purpose of the stones among the locals. Some believe that they were created by gods at the beginning of time, others believe that even nowadays there are home to evil spirits. The most common explanation, however, shared both by locals and archeologists, is that they were burial markers used by a mysterious prosperous, and highly organized ancient civilization with great geological and technical knowledge. There are some theories that they marked mass graves - probably victims of battles or epidemic diseases. To get to the stones from Georgetown, we need two boat transfers, as well as a public bus, shared with the locals. We will then continue with a boat trip around Baboon Island - one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in The Gambia. Here we will have the chance to see some more of the local bird species, as well as hippos and manatees. Thanks to the efforts of the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Camp project, the islands are now also inhabited by over 100 baboons, some of which, if we are lucky, we can see from the boats in their natural habitat. Since the island is a conservation project, it is not allowed to land on it and it is off-limits even for the staff at the sanctuary. In the evening we are heading to the region of Tendaba in the west of the country, where we will spend the night in a camp.  B/-/-

Day 7. Tendeba - Touba This morning we will have some free time to relax and enjoy the scenery before we head back to Senegal. We will spend the night in the city of Touba - the second most populated Senegalese city after Dakar. The city is a holy place for the Mouride brotherhood - a large Sufi order mainly in Senegal and The Gambia. The order was founded by Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba in 1883 and the city of Touba was built by his son and followers a few years later. Here we will visit the Great Mosque of Touba - one of the biggest mosques in Africa, with a capacity of up to 7000 people. The mosque is home to the tomb of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, which makes it a pilgrimage for followers of the order. Overnight in a hotel in Touba.  B/-/-

Day 8. Tuba - Saint Louis (Senegal)  Today we are driving north to the city of St.Luis - the city was the capital of the French colony of Senegal and was an important economic center during that period. It has preserved a lot of its distinct colonial architecture, and thanks to that it was added to UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. We will have a tour of the historical parts and spend the night in a hotel in the city. B/-/-

Day 9. Saint Louis - Djoudj National Park - Lompoul Our first stop today is Djoudj National Park - a sanctuary for hundreds of migratory bird species, pelicans, and flamingos. Here we will have a short boat trip and learn more about the amazing wildlife of these wetlands. After that, we will continue driving toward the village of Loumpoul - a gateway to the Lompoul desert. From here we will take a 4x4 truck to the desert camp where we will spend the night enjoying the romantic atmosphere and tranquility of the desert.   B/-/-

Day 10. Departure Today we are heading back to Dakar. We will drive straight to the airport to finish the tour.  B/-/-

Special event: Turtles’ nesting Scheduled departures dates from Dakar (day 1): Nov 17th, 2023 Dec 27th, 2023

Minimum 2 - maximum 16 participants

14 Day Senegal, Gambia and Guinea Bissau - Map

A unique itinerary crossing three countries “north to south” to experience a continuous change of climatic ecosystems and human environments.

NATURE Following the “uncertain border” between land and water we move across an incredible variety of natural environments such desert dunes, savannah, estuaries, forest, mangrove swamps, ending with an exciting ocean navigation to discover and enjoy the Bijagos Archipelago. Birds will be a constant presence along the whole journey. Djoudj National Sanctuary in Senegal is one of the main migratory bird sanctuaries on earth and Gambia is a well-known birding destination.

HISTORY, PREHISTORY & TIMELESS VILLAGES We will discover historical sites as: Dakar, contemporary metropolis, large capital and African intellectual center since the time before the independence. Gorée, ancient slave-trade island; Saint Louis, the first colonial capital of “French West Africa”; Bolama, the Portuguese Guinea capital, today forgotten in a remote island; We will experience the encounter with “timeless” people as herders and remote villages. We will discover the largest monoliths site on earth.

ART, CULTURE & MUSIC In the northern Savannah, we will be invited to the camp of nomadic herders, and we will meet the largest religious and peaceful brotherhood that practices an African form of Islam that rejects fundamentalism and violence. In the south, we will be introduced to animistic traditional religions, tribal kings, dancing masks, and remote tribes who still worship ancestor statues: a unique chance to enjoy tribal art in its original contest. In the animistic Casamance region, we will witness the celebrations of Diola mask, the incarnation of mythical spirits… Masquerade is a unique experience that involves the participation of the entire village in an intense mix of magic, music, and dances.

TRANSPORTS We will travel in different kinds of vehicles; each one chosen to optimize the different geographical and cultural environments and have fun. On the land we will travel mainly on comfortable air-conditioned minibus and for short rides we will experience 4WD vehicles, traditional calash, as in option donkey chariot and local taxi. On the ocean, to the Bijagos archipelago, we will sail on modern speedboats.

UNIQUE EVENT Turtles’ nesting. Poilao Island in Bijagos Archipelago is an uninhabited site of great beauty. It is also considered the main nesting site for the great Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Midas) in West Africa. After dark, in silence on the beach, we wait for the magic moment when a female emerges from the ocean and dig the deep hole where she then lays her eggs. With a bit of luck, there are good chances we will be able to witness this natural wonder of nature and/or the hatching! … with the tiny ones coming out of the sand to jump in the ocean and begin a long journey that will take them back to this same island when they reach sexual maturity, 30 years afterward. - Turtle nesting - coinciding departures: Nov 17th & Dec 27th, 2023

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Dakar, the capital - SENEGAL

Arrival in Dakar and transfer to the hotel.

Meals: Free Overnight: Hotel Djoloff, hotel de charme with fine traditional architecture and comfort, or similar (air-conditioned, en-suite rooms).

Day 2: Dakar contemporary metropolis & Gorée, from Dakar to Gorée (transfers in town and ferry) - SENEGAL

Dakar , the large and vibrant African metropolis that was the cultural and intellectual capital of French West Africa. Reflecting that period, the Presidential Palace and the IFAN Museum (Institut Francais d’Afrique Noire), hosting an important collection of African art objects. When it opened, the museum was directed by Theodor Monod, a celebrated Africanist and one of the greatest Sahara scholars. The museum is currently under reconstruction and so the visit will take place if it is open.

We will visit the Musée des Civilisations Noirs. Opened in December 2018, it is the realisation of Léopold Sédar Senghor’s vision (the first president of independent Senegal, a poet, and Nobel Prize winner). The museum represents the historical and contemporary worldwide cultures, art and soul of Black people, which he called Negritude.

We will also see the Cathédrale Notre Dame des Victoires & Place de Souvenirs. The cathedral dates from 1936 and was built in Neo-Sudanese style, a style inspired by the Sahara and Sub-Sahara adobe mosque architecture.

Arrival at Dakar port to board a ferry and spend a night in Gorée, the island where slaves used to be crammed before being shipped to the Americas. Some restored buildings remain to bear witness of those times.

The Portuguese were the first to establish a presence on Gorée in 1450, where they built a small stone chapel. After the decline of the slave trade from Senegal in the 1770s and 1780s, the island became an important port for the shipment of peanuts, Arabic gum, ivory, and other products of legitimate trade. Thanks to the nice breeze, and the many restaurants and shops, Gorée today has become a pleasant and trendy location. In late afternoon and evening, when the other tourists are gone, we will experience the real feeling of this special island.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Hotel “de charme” , capacity of hotels in Gorée is limited. The group may be split in different locations, close each other (air-conditioned, en-suite rooms).

Day 3: Lac Rose and fisherman villages, from Gorée to Lompoul (ferry and drive 170 km – 6 hrs) - SENEGAL

Boats in Senegal

Ferry to Dakar and drive to Lac Rose , a shallow saltwater lake surrounded by dunes, also known as Lac Retba. The water is ten times saltier than in the ocean and thanks to this high concentration the lake often shimmers into pink. Workers here collect salt in the traditional way.

Miles of exciting drive on the beach by 4x4 will bring us to discover the largest fisherman village in Senegal. More than 4500 wooden painted pirogues come to the shore with the catch of the day… We will leave our vehicles for a less intrusive, but fun, donkey chariot to approach the fisherman selling to the local market women, to meet the artisans carving the large pirogues, the painters decorating them with bright colors and if we are lucky the “local saint” for final blessing before sailing…

Drive by minibus to the north. At the edge of Lompoul Desert, some 4WD vehicles will be waiting to cross the dunes and take us at our fix camp. The Lompoul orange sand dunes landscape anticipate the neighbouring Sahara.

Meals: B – L - D Overnight: Permanent tented camp (comfortable tents with beds and en-suite).

Day 4: Saint Louis, from Lompoul to St. Louis (100 km – 2 hrs)– SENEGAL

Saint Louis , known to locals as Ndar, is a charming ancient town which was a French territory from 1673 until 1895 and the capital of all French West Africa colonies from 1895 until 1902, when the capital was moved to Dakar. From 1920 to 1957, it also served as the capital of the neighboring colony of Mauritania.

It has been the former base of the “Aeropostale” airmail pioneer operation between Europe, Africa and South America. Saint Exupéry, the famous writer, author of “The Little Prince”, was one of Aeropostale pilot following this route.

Located on two islands between Senegal river and the ocean at the southern edge of the Sahara, rich in three centuries of history, cultural background, geography, architecture, Saint-Louis is a “bridge” between the savanna and the desert, the ocean, the river, and the inland, between tradition and modernity, Islam and Christianity, Europe and Africa.

Home to a society with a distinctive lifestyle, Saint-Louis has retained its unique identity. "No one comes without falling in love with the city," proudly say its people who consider Saint-Louis as the birthplace of Senegalese Teranga, the Wolof word for hospitability.

The best way to visit the narrow lanes of Saint Louis is by calash, just as locals do, and walk in the fisherman quarters. Time to stroll in the tiny avenues and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this old town.

We will spend the night at the historic hotel of the town - built in 1895 and now fully renovated - it was here that all Aeropostale pilots use to stay.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Hotel de la Poste or similar (Air conditioned, en-suite rooms).

Day 5: Bird sanctuary & Nomadic tribes, from St. Louis to Ferlo desert (150 km – 4 hrs) – SENEGAL

Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary

Depending on the season, considering time of migrations and level of water, the visit to Djoudj may be replace by similar experience in Langue de Barbarie, a thin, sandy peninsula, adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, located in western Senegal, in the neighborhoods of the city of Saint-Louis. The peninsula separates the ocean from the final section of the Senegal River. The Langue de Barbarie National Park is home to an abundant variety of bird species and three species of turtle, including the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle.

In the afternoon continuation to the Ferlo Desert to discover the arid region where nomadic Fulani tribe herds large droves of zebu. The Fulani (also called Peul) are the largest nomadic tribe roaming West African Savannahs, living in a vast area from Senegal to Chad. Their origins are still covered with mystery. They all share a common and aristocratic cult for beauty and elegance. In the afternoon a local guide will join us for a visit to the neighboring villages and shelters. When the herds come back, we might even be invited to witness the milking process.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Camp made up of simple grass huts, managed by a local entrepreneur (all rooms with beds, mosquito nets and en-suite).

Day 6: Tuba Brotherhood, from Ferlo desert to Kabacoto (240 km – 5 hrs) - SENEGAL

Tuba

Amhadou Bàmba founded Touba in 1887. The holy site remained a tiny, isolated place in the wilderness until his death and burial at the site of the Great Mosque, 40 years later. The Great Mosque was finally completed in 1963 and since its inauguration the city has grown at a rapid pace: from under 5,000 inhabitants in 1964, the population was officially estimated at 529,000 in 2007.

The Mourides have a large social and economic impact in Senegal: thanks to their peaceful (and African) vision of Islam, Mouridism, with other brotherhoods following the cult of Marabouts, has become the bastion that protects Senegal from radical Islam.

During the Grand Magal, annual pilgrimage, the town is visited by four million pilgrims.

Mourides welcome any interest in their traditions. Yet since Tuba is a sacred town, all visitors should accept traditional rules. Therefore, we must apply a considerate dress code: not smoke, not drink alcohol and not listen to music during the visit. If we follow these rules, we will be welcomed. A Baye Fall, a member of a colorful branch of Mouridism, will accompany us during the visit.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Kabacoto Safari Hotel or Relais de Kaolak; air-conditioned bungalows, swimming pool.

Day 7: Stone circles, from Kabacoto to Banjul (240 km – 6 hrs) – SENEGAL-GAMBIA

Early departure, we will leave the main road to discover the unique megalithic site of Sine Ngayene , as part of the Senegambian stone circles, which lies in The Gambia and in central Senegal.

According to UNESCO, the Senegambian stone circles are "the largest concentration of stone circles seen anywhere in the world." These sites represent an extraordinary concentration of more than 1,100 stone and related tumuli spread over a territory of 100 km wide and 350 km in length, in Gambia River north bank.

After The Gambia border formalities, we will drive to Banjul area.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Atlantic hotel, private beach facing the ocean, (air-conditioned, en-suite rooms).

Day 8: Gambian birds and sacred masks from Banjul to Ziguinchor (160 km – 4 hrs) – GAMBIA-SENEGAL

Diola mask

Drive to the southern border whit Casamance region of Senegal.

We will leave the main track to join a remote village. We have lunch in the village, prepared by a local family to enjoy the Senegalese gastronomy and improve local community economy.

In the afternoon masks leave the sacred forest to dance for an enthusiastic local crowd. Masks are part of the animistic Diola culture, people fear and respect masks, consider them spirits who play an important role in solving conflicts between villagers.

Evening arrival to our comfortable hotel on the banks of Casamance River where that will be our base for two days dedicated to discover Casamance.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Kadiandoumange Hotel on the banks of the river or similar (air-conditioned, en-suite rooms).

Day 9: Sacred kings, Casamance (150 km aprox – 4 hrs) – SENEGAL

Diola

In a hidden village we will be received by the king of a Diola Kingdom. After the protocol salutations the king, that is also the high priest holding both political and mystical power, will answer our questions on the traditional rules in Diola society.

Late afternoon, return to Ziguinchor.

Day 10: Ancestors, from Ziguinchor to Quinhamel (250 km – driving time 7 hrs.) - SENEGAL - GUINEA BISSAU

Early departure for a long but interesting day. Guinea Bissau border crossing.

On the way to Bissau stop at Bula to meet a Manjaco king and learn about the culture of his tribe.

Many Manjaco households within the traditional homeland have an ancestor shrine made up of carved wooden posts which are collectivist representations of ancestors in general. When the Manjaco people make offerings, they refer to a single ancestor despite the shrines represent the ancestors collectively. It is important to note the way in which the Manjaco people consider and “treat” their ancestors in comparison with other cultures. Rather than revering and treating them as guides of moral superiority, the Manjaco people tend to subjugate and incorporate them back into society as relative equals.

Evening arrival to Quinhamel, late dinner.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Hotel Mar Azul, waterfront or similar (en-suite rooms, simple).

Day 11: From the ghost capital to the Bijagos Archipelago, from Quinhamel to Rubane (speed boat) - GUINEA BISSAU

Bolama Island

Due to the remoteness of the destination, the lack of transportation and the deep attachment to the local traditions, the Bijagos inhabitants have been little influenced by the external world: during ceremonies women still wear the saiya - a traditional skirt made of straw - and the rhythm of life in villages is given by initiations and secret ceremonies – for example young men have to go through a seven-year initiation rite during which they live in a “convent” without any contact with women.

Our first stop will be Bolama Island , the former capital of Portuguese Guinea from 1871 to 1941, before it was moved to Bissau. This transfer was needed due to the shortage of fresh water in Bolama.

When the Portuguese left, native people came to live in the town which is now falling apart and is partly invaded by tropical vegetation. It was originally built following the plans of a «Castrum Romanum» (roman citadel) so today we can witness its large sunny lethargic avenues, its empty squares, its dry fountains, its bush-like gardens and its large administrative buildings in neo Palladian style. In the Governor’s Palace we can still admire columns in the classic style … where now goats graze! The Bissau-Guinean government is aiming for it to be designated the nation's first World Heritage Site.

Bolama, although inhabited, is plunged in the fairy-tale atmosphere of a still inhabited ghost town.

Arrival on Rubane / Bubaque Islands in the at the comfortable lodge that will be our base for three days of discovering Bijagos Archipelago.

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Hotel Ponta Anchaca or Lodge les Dauphins or similar (ocean front comfortable bungalows en-suite).

Day 12: Special event (speed boat) - GUINEA BISSAU

Turtle’s nesting. If the date of the tour is concomitant to the Turtle’s Nesting, special event: visit of the largest village in the archipelago, Bubaque, the only one connected to the continent by a ferry once a week: unpaved alleys, a tiny colorful market, local bars, and traders and the tiny ethnographic museum dedicated to Bijagos culture, sail in the direction of the Southern Island, stop at Meio a pristine uninhabited island where our footprints on the sand will be the only human traces.

Arrival to Poilao uninhabited island, in the night, with high tide the turtles will emerge from the ocean, we must remain silent and don’t use a direct flashlight that can scare the turtles.

Late-night return at our comfortable hotel.

Day 13: Islander life (speed boat) - GUINEA BISSAU

Day to enjoy the archipelago way of life: relax at the wild beach, a walk to explore villages and luxuriant vegetation, excursion to the neighbor Soga Island. Optional not included: day excursion to Orango Island to watch hippos (actual seeing the hippos is not guaranteed).

Meals: B - L - D Overnight: Hotel Ponta Anchaca or Lodge les Dauphins or similar (oceanfront comfortable bungalows, en-suite).

Day 14: From Rubane to Bissau (speed boat) - GUINEA BISSAU

Arrival by speedboat in Bissau, the tiny capital of the country. A vehicle will be waiting for us for a brief tour of this tiny and intriguing capital.

We start walking by Bissau Vehlo, the old Portuguese quarter with an atmosphere reminding us of past Portuguese days and where we can experience the mix of African and Portuguese souls. In old wooden cafés, we can taste Portuguese wines and watch Portuguese news. We continue to the Presidential Palace, the Catholic Cathedral, Fortaleza Amura, Independence Monument, and Che Guevara Square to end in an open-air bar known for the best mojito in town.

In the evening, transfer to the airport for the flight out.

Meals: B – L Day-use: Rooms in day-use (air-conditioning, en-suite rooms)

My friend and I chose to book our 8-day tour of Senegal and the Gambia with Mika at Trip Tour Senegal. We are so happy that we did and had an amazing adventure and experience! From the start of our conversation by email/Whatsapp, Mika was very responsive and helpful. He was also flexible based on our flight schedules and also what we wanted to see. We had a warm welcome at Dakar airport. Then over the next few days we were driven by Samba, who is friendly, reliable and a very safe driver. Mika, our guide, is knowledgeable and speaks many languages! We mostly had our tour in English with a little bit of French so I could practice, and some key words he taught us in Woloff. We focused on seeing a bit of the cities, cultural and wildlife highlights. The local guides that Mika chose were friendly and knowledgeable. Also, we were happy that we were supporting some of the village economy at the places we visited. It's hard to say what our favourite thing was to do. It was a big variety from city tours to relaxing time at the beach to lion and monkey walks, Bandia wildlife reserve safari, Gambia river cruise to Baboon island, trying local food, Wassu Stone circle (UNESCO), Touba Mosque, crocodile pond, and more. He chose great places to stay which were clean and comfortable. The one very basic night was in Wassu, as that is more in the countryside of Gambia. One of our favourite food experiences was a home-cooked Senegalese thieboudienne (fish, vegetables and rice) made by our driver's wife. Wonderful and they were so welcoming! All of the extended family came to say hello and welcome. We felt very special that evening. Thank you Mika and Samba! You definitely deserve the 5-star review! Hope to meet again one day and we will recommend you to any friends who visit Senegal Read more Written March 31, 2024

Before booking, Mika was very flexible and responsive in helping us work out an itinerary that fit our schedules and our desired sights. Once we got there, Mika was an amazing host. His English is perfect, he has lots of local knowledge and connections and is able to adapt on the go and ensure you have a great time regardless of unexpected local events. Samba was a competent, safe and pleasant driver. We had a wonderful time and I'd enthusiastically recommend Mika to anyone travelling to this part of the world! Read more Written March 30, 2024

Our guide, Amadou, arrived promptly at our hotel and was very kind. In fact, when I realized I had left my phone at the hotel, he let me take pictures with his. 🥰 We saw so many animals. We saw a variety of birds, giraffes, antelopes, monkeys, ostriches, rhinos, and my favorite, ZEBRAS. Read more Written January 4, 2024
  • Guide51253593316 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyable but could be better We really enjoyed the safari and the boat trip in the lagoon. We saw some amazing animals and birds and were driven between each place. However, it felt as though our guide Yoyo hadn’t done this tour before. It didn’t feel well organised e.g. we arrived at the wrong time at the lagoon and had to wait 2 hours for the tides to change. For the price, I would have expected lunch and drinks to be included too Read more Written January 4, 2024

He was early for the pickup, the tour was great, and we had a nice lunch together afterwards. We saw a lot of amazing animals in the Bandia reserve, including zebras, giraffes, rhinos, antelopes, etc. No carnivores as expected, but more wildlife than we had thought we would see. Babies too! • Marky1970 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent compant and excellent trips. We booked a few trips with Trip Tour Senegal, both times communication was excellent quick replies from Mika and our guide Abdoulaye. We only had a short time in Senegal so wanted to do as much as we good, seeing Bandia and Pink lake in one trip and Goree and Dakar in another was a perfect way to do this. Pick-up times were spot on and Abdoulaye was a excellent guide, funny and kind and always looking out for us, able to go at our own pace. Bandia was great we had a jeep for ourselves which was perfect, the park guide even took some great photos for us on our phone too so could just use camera. Pink lake while sadly not pink currently was really good and then a jeep ride round lake and onto beach was great, we could have got ATV's and driven ourselves but plumped for jeep to enjot scenery more. Goree on our second trip was a great day out, we forgot our ID which we needed for ferry, but Abdoulaye sorted that out with some smooth talking. To really see both Goree and Dakar fully in same day is maybe a bit much, but we simply did not have time to visit on seperate days, but if we had more time I think that would have been better. But we knew this in advance, so that was our choice for a whistle stop tour of Dakar. The advantage of a private tour as opposed to a group one is ability to do as suits you and this was where Trip Tour Senegal excelled. Read more Written November 29, 2023

Both were extremely friendly and accommodating as they showed me round large parts of Senegal. My trip went to Lac Rose, Lompoul, Touba and Saloum. Particular highlights were the beautiful desert scenes at Lompoul, the peaceful boat journey through the Saloum Delta and a privileged look at the inside of the grand mosque at Touba. • habihabi7 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Joyful day! Felt a bit expensive when I saw the price first, but it's worth it I feel after spending a day with the team. Safari experience in Bandia reserve was very nice. Saw lots of animals, but the best part was the beautiful nature. I think baobabs in Senegal are special. They were truly beautiful, and continue to fascinate you after seeing many. You get to see legendary baobabs including one used as a semetary in the past. Pink lake was out of season, which means the water was not pink, but I'd say it's still worth visiting. Learning about the salt industry was very interesting. The guide found me a friendly salt harvester who allowed me to take pictures close up. (Don't forget to tip just a little bit to these amazingly hard working professionals.) Overall, great tour, perfectly arranged. Thank you, Mica! And to those of you who might be worried about the secuirty in the city after some news coverage of political unrest, the city is totally peaceful, calm, and safe. I thought about cancelling the visit before coming, but I'm so glad I didn't!! Read more Written August 22, 2023

He made you feel secure, safe and involved in all the activities that he did with you. I did 3 tours with him on the trip and every one was of really high quality and he has brilliant knowledge of Senegal. My advice is that if you want a professional guide who will make your experience the best in Senegal. Get Mika and book Trip Tour Senegal (I met his other guides too). He's worth every penny and so are they! He's also perfect for solo travellers, both male and female. My highlight was the family trip where I got to meet Senegalese people in their home and enjoy their culture. Definitely coming back again in future and Mika will be the first to call. Thanks again my friend! Read more Written May 23, 2023

In the afternoon, visit Serrekunda the most densely populated town in The Gambia, here you can see displays of “Tie & Dye” and the beautiful Batik cottons.

Continue to the village of Juffureh where the ancestry of “Kunta Kinte” of Roots fame was traced. The restored original home of the Kinte clan still occupied by the Kinte family can be visited.

Gambia Senegal Safari

Fathala Wildlife Reserve

The reserve consists of thousands of hectares of original and protected African forest. Enjoy the high savannah grass, giant African Mahogany trees, and wild bush.

We drive in our 4WD and see rhinos, giraffes, roan, waterbuck, zebra and red colobus monkey.  We also go looking for Papa’s favorite animal: the great and beautiful western giant eland. The giant eland is the inspiration for our logo.

This tour starts early in the morning. We pick you up at your hotel and drive to the ferry terminal in Banjul.   On the ferry we see lots of people going to or coming from the market in Banjul. Many Senegalese people go shopping in the market in Banjul, where prices are lower that in Senegal.

Crossing the Senegal border

Gambia Senegal safari

The Gambia Senegal Safari tour can be done in one day. If you want more time in Senegal, we can stay overnight in Fathala. This gives us time to visit other parts in the south of Senegal, like the Saloum Delta. This huge delta is one of the top destinations in Africa for seeing water birds like flamingo, spoonbill and royal tern.

Senegal and The Gambia are closely connected West African countries in which Islam is the faith of 96-97% of the respective populations. Contact with Muslim traders from North Africa introduced Islam to the area beginning in the 8th century, with more significant local adoption of the faith by rulers, elites and the populace from the 11th century onwards. Along with nearby Mali and Ghana, this region came to develop a unique Muslim culture and civilization over the centuries, with an indigenous scholarly and spiritual tradition. We will visit a number of important heritage sites from the medieval period and into the early modern era, ranging from the pilgrimage city of Touba where the inspiring anti-colonial figure Ahmadou Bamba is buried, the environs of Kunta Kinteh Island and Gorée Island that factored in the horrendous trans-Atlantic slave trade, and natural environments ranging from rivers, lakes, deserts, and coastal areas. We will encounter the remarkable people of these lands, meet with leaders and scholars, appreciate the local cuisines and handicrafts, and be enchanted by the stunning natural beauty of this region.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

 A rriving to The Gambia

Several airlines provide service to The Gambia and Senegal.  Participants should book "multi-city" flights to Banjul (BJL), and arrive from midday onwards on Saturday, January 6.  The tour program officially begins on the morning of Sunday, January 7 with a group orientation meeting af ter breakfast, followed by a city tour of the capital.  For travelers from the US, this would mean departing from your city of origin on Friday, January 5 (or earlier depending on connecting flights and cities).  Based on your arrival time in Banjul, a transfer will be arranged for you r party from the airport to the hotel, only on January 6 (if you arrive earlier, you will need to make your own transfer arrangements and hotel reservations for any extra nights).

Departing from Senegal

Participants departing from Dakar (DSS) on January 15 will be provided a transfer to the airport several hours before their flight departure time.  Those who wish to remain longer in Senegal after the tour concludes can make their own lodging arrangements for the night of January 15 and beyond, and arrange their own transfer to the airport on their departure date.

Booking Your Flights

Once you've paid your deposit to Bayan Tours, you should research and book your flights as soon as possible to try and obtain well-priced airfare with suitable flight timings and layovers.  We will provide some sample flight itineraries on various airlines to help you determine the same or similar itineraries based on your origin point.  You can use your own travel agent, check airline websites, or use other booking sites to select the flight legs that are best for you.  We recommend that you choose routes with layovers of not less than 90 minutes.

Bayan Tours-3.png

  • Who is leading the tour? Bayan’s vice president and professor Munir Shaikh will be the faculty escort for the tour. He holds an M.A. in Islamic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a specialization in the history of Islamic Iberia (Al-Andalus), and certificates from academic programs in Morocco, Egypt and Spain. He has lived for periods of time in Spain (and Morocco), and is conversant in Spanish. He has taught academic courses on Islamic Spain, Middle Eastern history, Islam, and world history, and led world heritage tours in various countries, including seven previous excursions in Southern Spain.
  • What is the expected group size? Bayan’s tours are focused on providing a well-rounded experience featuring scholarly knowledge, cultural exposure, recreational activities, and free time. Most tour groups are multi-generational and diverse in nature. In addition to historical and contemporary sites of interest, the itinerary includes visits to mosques and other places of worship to accommodate the religious needs of group members. Our group size tends to be in the range of 30-40 participants from North America and beyond. Participants are able to get to know one another and develop bonds of friendship and camaraderie that can last a lifetime. By participating in a tour, you are helping sustain and advance Bayan’s mission as a non-profit educational institution.
  • When is the registration deadline? We are accepting registrations for the tour until March 31, in order to reserve seats on a train, book sufficient hotel rooms, procure entrance tickets to monuments, and ensure other details. You must pay a refundable deposit of $500 per traveler. Deposits are partially refundable through February 15, 2024, however, a cancellation charge of $ 100 per traveler will apply for any cancellation requested 24 hours after time of booking. For other important terms and conditions, please click here. After payment of your deposit, you will receive an invoice for the remaining balance for your party, reflecting any applicable discounts. The balance payment is due no later than April 15, 2024.
  • Is a visa required for U.S. citizens to enter Spain? Bayan’s tours are open to participants who wish to join from anywhere in the world. However, the majority of participants tend to be from the United States. US passport holders do not need to obtain a visa to enter Spain for tourism. This is true for nationals of many other countries as well. However, non-US passport holders are encouraged to check requirements for their nationality and obtain a visa if required.
  • How physically demanding is the tour? Our group will be transported from city to city in a luxury air-conditioned tourist bus. However, in each city, since we will be in the historical centers where buses can't go, we will use the metro or other local public transportation, and occasional taxis, to get around. Even so, there will be a significant amount of walking on most days, on slight inclines and steps. The streets at times will have cobblestones. The walking distances involved at any given time can range from 1/4 to 1/2 mile between rest points. The guides will take into account the differing abilities and health conditions of group members and regulate the pace and intensity of the tour accordingly. Nonetheless, participants should expect to walk roughly 12,000 steps each day (about 6 miles in aggregate) during the first few days of the program, and perhaps 8,000 steps per day during the latter portion of the itinerary. This tour may not be suitable for those with knee, hip or foot pain that could be aggravated by the amount of walking involved. Ideally, all participants should prepare for the tour by walking at least 5,000 steps per day in the weeks leading up to the tour.
  • What type of food will we have on the tour? Spain’s food is a mix of Mediterranean and local traditions. Some dishes, such as paella, reveal their roots in Arab/Muslim cuisines. While the types of vegetarian options have grown in recent years in Spain, most local meat dishes feature pork (we will be sure to avoid any foods prepared with pork or alcohol). During the tour, we will dine at restaurants that serve zabiha halal foods, or at places that offer seafood and vegetarian options. You can expect meals to include Middle Eastern, Turkish and Moroccan dishes at restaurants run by local Muslims, and Italian and other types of dishes more generally. You’ll have the option of sampling various suitable tapas (small dishes) that are routinely consumed in neighborhood establishments..
  • Will you provide more information about the daily schedule and other details? Yes, all participants who have completed their full payment will receive a detailed information packet that includes descriptions of the cities and sites to be visited, the daily schedule, currency exchange, local prayer times, electrical adapters, weather, what to pack, and more.
  • What precautions are you taking with regard to COVID-19? We encourage participants to be fully vaccinated with at least one booster shot for all who are eligible to receive these shots. Travelers may visit Spain for tourism, but must provide either a certificate proving full vaccination, a negative test (PCR or rapid antigen), or a certificate of recovery. Travelers can enter using the EU Digital Covid Certificate or its equivalents. We do not expect to mandate masking during the tour, but we encourage masking whenever possible and according to each individual’s comfort level. For example, when shopping in crowded areas, it would be best to wear a mask. General sanitary practices should be maintained at all times, such as washing hands with soap, using sanitizing gels and wipes, and maintaining a reasonable distance between individuals.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Our African safaris
  • Costa Rica Wildlife

Level 3 – Moderate

Half- to full-day hikes (3-6 hours) over rolling countryside on most days, occasional steep trails. Many of our hotel-based walking tours are in this category, as are our snorkeling adventures.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia
  • Hiking the Spanish Pyrenees

Level 5 – Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Trips with hiking at average altitudes of 10,000 to 12,000 feet are in this category.

  • Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
  • Everest Lodge to Lodge

Level 6 – Very Strenuous

Full-day hikes (5-8 hours), mountainous, steep terrain (hiking up or down as much as 3,500 feet) on many days. Most hikes take place at altitudes above 10,000 feet, with some days ascending as high as 18,000 feet.

River Gambia Tours

Another country & other impressions

This is the perfect day to discover Senegal. In the morning we leave for the ferry  from Banjul to Bara on the north bank. This is an experience in itself, enjoy a true spectacle of vans and cars carrying all sorts of things to transport. On the other side, we continue our journey to Senegal. Wait at the border and wonder yourself about the slow pace. After crossing the border we drive to Fathala Park. We make a two hour trip through the park. Here we can encounter animals, no longer seen in the Gambia, such as zebra’s, rhinos and giraffes. Perhaps even the western giant eland. In Fathala you get an impression of the west African jungle it once was.

Do not forget your pasport, visa and vaccination record!  Yello fever vaccination is obigated.
