  • Lows Falls short on range, regen isn’t aggressive enough, other EVs have better performance for less.
  • Verdict Good at concealing its EV identity, the e-tron SUV and e-tron Sportback prioritize a remarkable ride over maximum range.

What's New for 2023?

Audi makes mild changes to e-tron and e-tron Sportback trims for 2023. Black headliner is now standard on base Sportback SUVs. For e-tron Sportback Prestige trims, new standard equipment includes 22-inch five-spoke wheels, orange front and rear brake calipers, rear side airbags, Audi’s Matrix-design headlights, and the Black Optic exterior package. Both e-tron S and e-tron Sportback S get carbon square inlays and the LED interior lighting package as standard, while Prestige trim levels of those SUVs now get Audi’s Matrix-design headlights.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2023 Audi Q8 e-tron starts at $71,995 and goes up to $90,495 depending on the trim and options.

We like the price point of the entry-level Premium trim level, and pairing it with the sleeker Sportback helps the e-tron garner more attention. This combination benefits from upscale standard features such as 20-inch wheels, blind-spot monitoring, heated front seats, four-zone climate control, leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. We'd add even more desirable equipment with the optional Convenience Plus package that brings black exterior trim, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and a 360-degree camera system. We'd also opt for the Tow package to utilize the e-tron's 4000-pound towing capacity.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

Beneath the e-tron's heavily creased bodywork are two electric motors, one located at the front axle and the other at the rear. Together they provide electronic all-wheel drive, but the rear motor does most of the work. In regular driving situations, they make a combined 355 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque. However, putting the transmission in Sport mode briefly unlocks 402 ponies and 490 pound-feet. Our driving impressions revealed that the e-tron was swift and composed. Its snappy acceleration is typical of electric vehicles, and the smooth and quiet ride quality confirmed its luxury bona fides. Its stopping system expertly blended its traditional brakes with the obligatory regenerative braking system. However, we were disappointed that its regen wasn't aggressive enough to enable one-pedal driving during our test of the Sportback model . Still, the e-tron demonstrates traditional SUV characteristics with the ability to tow up to 4000 pounds. The more powerful e-tron S and e-tron Sportback S boosts output to 496 horsepower and 718 pound-feet of torque. That's possible via its triple motors, and while we haven't tested it yet, Audi estimates it can arrive at 60 mph a full second sooner than non-S e-trons.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The regular e-tron has an EPA-estimated driving range of 226 miles, and the Sportback version is rated at 225 miles. However, both variants still trail rivals such as the I-Pace (234 miles) and the Model X Long Range (up to 371 miles). The e-tron S 496-hp performance model gets an EPA-estimated 208 miles of range on 20-inch wheels and 181 miles on 21- and 22-inch ones, while the similarly-shod e-tron S sportback eeks out 212 and 185, respectively, on a single charge. Every e-tron features an impressive 150-kW fast charger that allows it to replenish 80 percent of its battery in about 30 minutes. By comparison, the Jaguar EV has a 100-kW DC charger that takes longer to recharge its battery. Those using a more conventional 240-volt outlet will be able to fully charge the e-tron in about nine hours.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The e-tron SUV is expected to earn 78 MPGe combined, and the Sportback model is rated slightly lower at 77 MPGe combined. We tested both body styles on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen . The regular e-tron returned 67 MPGe and the Sportback returned 75 MPGe. For comparison, the last I-Pace we evaluated achieved 64 MPGe in the same test. For more information about the e-tron's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The e-tron's most impressive technology is its electrified systems, but the five-seat crossover also has a cutting-edge and practical cabin. Its dashboard is packed with multiple high-resolution screens that include Audi's digital gauge cluster—called Virtual Cockpit—and two flush-mounted touchscreens in the center. Of course, there are a variety of upscale options such as a head-up display and massaging front seats to further round out the e-tron's sophisticated interior, which benefits from a flat floor thanks to its neatly packaged underfloor battery pack. That helps provide the regular e-tron with a commodious cargo area that measures 29 cubic feet behind the back row and 57 with the seatbacks folded flat. The Sportback's sloping roofline reduces both figures by 2 cubes, but we still fit seven carry-on suitcases behind its rear seats—one less than in the regular e-tron.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Every e-tron's infotainment system runs through dual touchscreens, with a 10.1-inch display on top and an 8.8-inch unit below it. While the upper screen provides access to the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps as well as the available Bang & Olufsen audio system, the bottom screen is mainly used for controlling the climate settings. Along with several power points, the system also features a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot; a wireless smartphone charger is optional.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

Audi deploys an array of standard driver-assistance technology on both e-tron body styles, and they're available with adaptive cruise control and self-parking assist. For more information about the e-tron SUV and e-tron Sportback's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Standard lane-departure warning

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Audi provides a competitive albeit unremarkable limited and powertrain warranty.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
  • Electrical components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Audi e-Tron Sportback long-term test: the ten-month verdict

Audi e-Tron Sportback long-term test: the ten-month verdict

► Living with Audi’s electric SUV ► Coupe shape and camera mirrors ► Stay tuned for regular reports

The e-Tron Sportback is good at being an Audi, and quite good at being an electric vehicle. But it’s not perfect, in part because it’s an EV, and in part because it’s an Audi EV.

I’ll explain. Like all the best Audis, it’s ultra-desirable, and looks great, the mix of squared-off rear arches and bigger front intakes endowing it with more presence than the meeker non-Sportback sibling. Interior quality is also top-notch, way beyond what you’ll find in a Tesla.

In our 10 months we loved the space inside too, both up front for tall parents, and in the back where we had two chunky car seats. Despite being a button enthusiast I even got on with the dual touchscreens, and the cameras-for-mirrors concept worked as well.

As an EV, it is ultra-refined (helped by being an Audi), and as quick as I’d ever want my family car to be (and too much for Mrs P when Sport mode ups the ante from 355bhp and 414lb ft to 402bhp and 490lb ft). It doesn’t pollute my neighbourhood, and after 10 months of the swift, silent and serene life I’d not want my family carthorse to be anything other than electric. Speaking of which…

Charging was fine when it was local, where there’s a decent number of options, or when I could use the driveway charging points of the wider family. Occasionally a longer trip meant the need to charge en route. For the most part this was also fine, if you researched ahead, but a couple of bad experiences with out-of-order chargers dented my confidence.

The official figure of 2.5 miles per kWh isn’t great, and our actual figure of 1.9 is frankly off the pace. Only with the recent warm weather has the range shown more than 200 miles (when it should be nearly 250) but until June it never budged above 180.

It was more range frustration than range anxiety, though. We never felt we couldn’t go anywhere we wanted, and didn’t make a trip in anything else for almost a year. In fact, I’ve loved it as a family car, and would happily run it for years to come.

But I couldn’t buy one, knowing something better is always just around the corner. The BMW iX arriving at the end of the year claims a 380-mile range, and EVs are constantly leapfrogging each other, so why you’d do anything but lease any EV for the next few years is beyond me.

Month 9 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: EQC driver takes on the e-Tron

etron vs eqc

Automotive osmosis. Sounds like a French concept car, actually the ability of your daily runner to get under your skin, warts and all. So there’s nothing more corrective than assessing your car through the prism of an arch-rival.

We go for a gentle run through the Oxfordshire countryside. The Audi’s width has me breathing in to squeeze past oncoming traffic. It doesn’t feel as quick off the line as the Merc (and isn’t, sacrificing half a second to 62mph), though it keeps on pushing – whereas EQC punch tapers off past 50mph and the e-Tron makes a louder e-whine than the buttoned-up Merc.

Turning the Audi’s wheel feels a touch light and vague off the dead-ahead, but becomes nicely weighted with speed. I’m over-ridden at the first corner by the lane-assist system, which takes a confident line through the fast sweeper. Doesn’t stop it getting switched off instantly, by one touch of the stalk button. The Merc does the whole stopping thing far better. Use the paddles to select from two gradients of regen braking, or coasting mode: engage what’s best for the conditions and the Merc persists until instructed otherwise.

With the Audi, you have to pull a paddle every time you want to amp up regen, and it’s two tugs for max. Talk about complicated. Add in its less responsive pedal, and the extra 100 kilos of mass, and stopping the e-Tron is a bit sluggish.

Ben finds the Merc really squirrelly under braking: ‘The body goes in about eight directions at once.’ It’s not just under braking: cornering, sudden steering inputs and bumps can upset the soft suspension. While this gives a lovely loping primary ride on smooth surfaces, the secondary ride is often harsh, thumping through dips and jarring over crests. While the Audi has superior body control, both cars crash their 21-inch wheels on B-roads.

For a £92k car, the e-Tron’s cockpit pales into blandness compared with the Merc’s imaginative colours and materials. Additional demerits for the range bar that’s less clear than the Merc’s swingometer, and the lack of a stopper to prevent the seatbelt latch plate hiding at floor level. That said, the LED outline illuminating the buckles is helpful, and the touchscreen’s haptic feedback is welcome compared with the inert Merc’s.

Driving the e-Tron doesn’t make me question my EQC commitment. The Merc is more efficient (2.4 miles per kWh over the 145-mile trip), more emotional and more engaging to pedal. Confirmation bias? Perhaps. Or confirmation that CAR remains a melting pot of unruly opinions.

Month 8 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: turn it off and on again

etron sportback dials

Some electrical glitches this month. First on the blink was our Pod Point home charger. It needed just to be turned off and on (as advised by the customer service team, who were answering calls early on a Saturday).

Next was my trusted BP location near the M3. One of the chargers was out of action (I didn’t think to check, because coming from fossil fuels you don’t) but then the other would only put in £2 of juice before clicking off.

And the Audi’s Digital Cockpit display randomly reverts from my chosen ‘e-Tron’ to ‘Classic’ layout – and sometimes won’t change until you’ve turned the car off and on.

Month 7 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: the price of progress

etron sportback camera mirror

We have long-term test cars to see how they cope with daily use, but after a few months there’s a danger you start to mellow to a car’s quirks. Note-taking, especially during the first few weeks when everything is a new experience, is thus crucial – even if you’re out with the family and haven’t yet paid for the parking because you’re busy scribbling in your pad.

Case in point, the e-Tron’s virtual door mirrors. To begin with they were a MASSIVE DEAL. Now they’re just the mirrors on our Audi. And now I’m used to tilting my head down a little further to see the screen mounted inside the door, whereas initially I kept looking out at the camera arm. I’ve also got used to the images on the screens – but those early notes tell me they’re not as crisp in the daylight as a straightforward reflection in a common-or-garden bit of glass, while at dusk they’re brighter than a real mirror.

So far, not much different from the conventional method of seeing what’s behind you, except £1250 more costly. The plus points are less drag, giving a few extra miles, and the combination of their tiny size and being heated means they’re never misted or iced over.

The cameras-for-mirrors come up short in two areas, though. For one, you can’t just move your head to improve the angle when parking. You know, when you just lift yourself up in the seat to get a better sight line down to the kerb? Yeah, that doesn’t happen in the Audi. Nothing moves, nothing changes, and you feel like an idiot. You have to poke the screen instead, and even then I don’t think the screen shows enough contrast between the grey kerb, the grey road and the grey alloy.

The other problem is that because the cameras aren’t mirrors, cyclists and bikers can’t see you looking back at them. In London that eye contact, from the driver up to someone on two wheels nipping past a line of traffic, is crucial – yet all they’re now greeted with is a lifeless Terminator eye on a stalk.
 Is this progress?

Month 6 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: making sense of an odd idea

etron sportback rear cornering

Remember the neither-fish-nor-fowl BMW 5-series GT, with the wheelbase of a 7-series and a hefty bootlid that let it double as both saloon and hatchback? There’s a distinct resemblance between that BMW and this electric Audi. Which is ace, as I always had a soft spot for the bloated 5 GT. The e-Tron is neither SUV nor estate yet offers raised seating (helpful when, like me, you’re a giant) and gargantuan space, thanks to the 3m wheelbase. There’s no silly double lid this time, but with a big hatchback lid (for shelter) and fixed parcel shelf (for support) the boot is the perfect place to dress a toddler in waterproofs for a rainy walk.

Price £79,900 (£92,470 as tested) Performance 95kWh battery, dual e-motors, 402bhp, 5.7sec 0-62mph, 124mph Efficiency 2.5 miles per kWh (official), 1.8 miles per kWh (tested), 0g/km CO2 Energy cost 9.4p per mile Miles this month 589 Total miles 4180

Month 5 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: no splash, no dash

etron charging

It’s hard to stop talking about charging when it’s all so new (albeit, I accept, not necessarily exciting). On-street charging has become the norm, but our nearest chargers are on a poorly lit street, and last week I did well to avoid some dog poo on the pavement.
I’ve never had to dodge a turd on a BP forecourt before. Speaking of which…

We’ve been to a BP forecourt twice this month to use the Pulse 150kW chargers, as part of two long round trips for baby bump scans. We spent 10 minutes at one charger (all the first-born would allow before a meltdown) and it smashed in 25kW for a tenner, while the follow-up experience was a little longer and calmer.

Both times, though, we’ve met the same problem: actually getting the cable into the plug. The e-Tron’s DC plug is by the driver’s door, and unless you park across the space it won’t stretch. And the cables can’t get longer, BP tells me, because they can’t dangle on the ground for health and safety reasons, and they can’t coil up in case of damage.

Solution? An industry standard plug location, ideally front and centre of the car’s nose. And pigs might fly…

Month 4 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: beating the system

etron night charge

Due to the impossibility of parking near a lamppost charger in my own street, I tend to top up the e-Tron at some nearby Source London 7kW points.

It’s dark when I arrive for the first time, as I’m a cheapskate looking to take advantage of the overnight discount when costs are capped at four hours between 8pm and 7am. There’s another Audi in one of the three bays, but it’s just an A5 nabbing a space while the wardens are in bed.

I tap the charging point’s screen, scan a QR code with my phone, enter credit card details and we’re charging happily. The MyAudi app says we’ll achieve 100 per cent charge just before 1am, but as I don’t make it back until 7.30am, the usual 7p per minute rate takes over. It costs £18.62 for 681 minutes – with £1.82 of that coming from that extra half hour in bed. Even with the cap that’s 50p per kW versus 14p on a home wallbox, so the cost per mile is nearer 20p rather than the usual 6p.

I immediately sign-up to the £4 monthly subscription service – which drops the rate to 3.6p per minute – and get a swipe card in the mail a few days later. The cost of a (capped) overnight charge comes down to under a tenner once a week.

Price £79,900 (£92,470 as tested) Performance 95kWh battery, dual e-motors, 402bhp, 5.7sec 0-62mph, 124mph Efficiency 2.5 miles per kWh (official); 2.0 miles per kWh (tested); 0g/km CO2 Energy cost 7.8p per mile Miles this month 651 Total miles 3078

Month 3 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: lithium-ion ironies

etron sportback socket

Filling up your car with petrol or diesel is a gloriously mundane experience. You can find fuel almost anywhere, the price you’ll pay is clear, and it’s over in minutes. Not so with an EV, and especially not in urban areas – which is painfully ironic because electric is best suited to city life.

But I’ve known living in London with an electric vehicle was going to be an issue since 2017. Way back then our local council, Richmond, had the foresight to canvass residents about future EV ownership and ask where we’d be keen to have charging points installed. Our road was identified for three public points, but just as residents were being canvassed again about going ahead with those three charging points, a celebrity chef opened an eaterie nearby. This would mean an evening influx of diners (and their cars), and local opinion suddenly changed: the mood now was that we weren’t prepared to lose three increasingly precious parking spaces so they could be turned into often-empty EV charging bays.

We did, however, get three lamppost chargers, thanks to the switch to LED street lighting, which frees up enough power to provide 5kW charging. Meantime, other streets didn’t protest quite so much, meaning less than a mile away are three dedicated 7kW Source London sockets.

What’s it really like to live with an electric car?

The other option is fast charging, and the likes of BP are installing 150kW points on forecourts in the capital. Our nearest is over the river in Hammersmith, but the bridge that should get us there is closed for repairs for the next three years.

Charge at home, you say? Like much of London we don’t have off-street parking, which is a sticking point if you want a wallbox installed. There are ways round this – in Oxford, for instance, they’ve been testing different solutions, including digging cable gulleys in the pavement.

For now the focus in my area is on lamppost conversions. Over 200 have been completed so far, another 145 soon, with the request list stretching to over 700.

So I created a spreadsheet – please DO NOT tell my wife – to calculate the different charging costs for the Ubitricity lampposts (£0.24 per kWh, or £0.162 if you buy their bespoke cable at £299) and the Source London chargers (with their three different pricing options). The higher Ubitricity rate was better for little top-ups, while big fills came out cheapest via a Source London full subscription.

But with only three lamppost chargers on the street and no markings to reserve the adjacent space for EVs, I’ve never actually seen a space beside one in the three months we’ve had the e-Tron. So until every lamppost has a charging point, the space beside those that have been converted is gold dust to EV drivers – but just another spot to be nabbed by everyone else. Source London it is, then.

Month 2 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: a long-distance journey of discovery

etron sportback long-termer side

The night shift The night before the journey from the New Forest to London the Sportback is plugged in, so the battery is brimmed by morning.

It knows us so well Battery is fully charged, but the car’s analysis of how it’s been used on previous journeys means a predicted range of 204 miles, 37 below the WLTP figure.

etron range

Even Eeyore would like it Whether via Bluetooth or Android Auto, the connection to Spotify is better than in the Peugeot I ran before, and playback through the B&O stereo is much clearer than the Pug’s Focal system. All the better to listen to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh back-to-back-to-back.

Constant calculation Twenty minutes after setting off we’ve cruised across the New Forest and the claimed range actually ticks up – yay! – to 205 miles. It then drops sharply as we accelerate onto the motorway and join the Sunday crowd heading home. But thereafter it loses range at roughly one mile for every mile we cover.

etron virtual mirrors

Dark art The ‘virtual mirrors’ get their first after-dark outing, and I’m not sure what to expect – a video of inky nothing? Dusk brings some spectacular colours like an Instagram filter has been applied, and as darkness falls the screens project images much lighter than you’d see reflected in glass.

Audi’s Virtual Mirrors: do they work?

Charge to spare We arrive home after covering 90 miles, and with 61 per cent battery charge remaining, or a range of 134 miles. No worries, no stress, and definitely no range anxiety.

Month 1 living with an Audi e-Tron Sportback: hello and welcome

etron sportback long-termer static

This is Audi’s e-Tron Sportback, an electric SUV/four-door coupé – and I don’t think I’ve ever been so fascinated by a long-term test car. Not because of the odd yet attractive silhouette, but because just living with it will be a challenge. A challenge I’m all too aware of, having run a Mk1 Nissan Leaf long-termer nearly a decade ago when public charging points were few (to the extent I never used one) and the range was seldom in three figures.

I’m not an EV naysayer, though. As a London resident I’m all for them, and I’m keen to live with another EV, encouraged by the knowledge that both charging infrastructure and battery technology have changed dramatically in the last nine years. I want electric cars to be viable – and in 2020 they should be – so I see the next nine months as an intriguing little brain puzzle. Plus I reckon I’ve mapped out enough charging options in my life that this will be the best kind of challenge: one you succeed at.

But before that, the e-Tron itself. It’s the Sportback (ie swoopier) version of Audi’s first full production electric vehicle, and batteries and motors aside, both e-Tron and e-Tron Sportback are relatively orthodox SUVs. Why? Because you need lots of batteries for a practical range, thus a big vehicle to fit them in, and so market tastes dictate an SUV rather than anything unconventional that would put off a family already apprehensive over making the leap to electric.

Initially there’s only one Sportback powertrain to pick from, a ’55 quattro’ model (with a motor driving each axle), but a ’50 quattro’ will be on sale by the time you’re reading this, and a more powerful, three-motor S version follows soon too – but as both offer reduced range, the 55 is the one to have.

The peak electrical output of the 55 is 300kW, or 402bhp, though that’s via a Boost mode that also unlocks the full 490lb ft and 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds. The more everyday Drive mode delivers 355bhp, 414lb ft, a still-impressive 6.6sec sprint, and the best chance of achieving the WLTP range of 241 miles.

etron sportback long-termer

Prices start at £80k – in part because trim levels begin with S-line and miss out on the non-Sportback’s Sport and Technik options (which kick off at £60k) – and rise all the way to the top-rung £95k Vorsprung model. Our car is an S-line, which means 21-inch wheels, Matrix LED headlights and LED rear lights, adaptive air suspension and rear privacy glass. You also get heated electric front seats, a powered tailgate, a rear-view camera, keyless go, three HD infotainment screens and a plethora of airbags.

Our car is Floret Silver, which costs the same £750 as all the metallic paints. The only ‘free’ paint is solid black. The other options fitted include some stuff that seems like a no-brainer (acoustic side glazing, for £525), some more questionable choices (£825 for four-zone air-con that my two-year old can’t reach), some kit that should be standard (a £425 electric steering column) and some features I’m intrigued to try (the £1250 virtual door mirrors that have tiny cameras on the outside and screens inside).

There’s a £1475 panoramic glass sunroof, upgraded Super Sports seats (£1050), a Comfort and Sound Pack (£1895 for a 16-speaker/705w Bang & Olufsen stereo, a 360º camera, hands-free boot opening and configurable LED interior lighting with 30 colour options) and a Tour Pack (£1950 of safety tech including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and lane-departure warning).

To complicate matters, we have a few options you wouldn’t otherwise be able to spec on an S-line model, because this is an early-build car for media duties. The orange brake calipers and Audi Beam (which projects the ‘e-Tron’ logo onto the ground when the doors are open) are only available as standard equipment on the Launch Edition and Vorsprung models, while the rear side airbags, illuminated seat buckles and additional ‘Sport’ and ‘e-Tron’ modes for the Virtual Cockpit display are reserved for Vorsprung.

So far we’ve bimbled around the capital in it for a handful of miles, in which it’s been deeply impressive, but now the e-Tron Sportback faces a tough test: a long-ish family journey.

Price £79,900 (£92,470 as tested) Performance 95kWh battery, dual e-motors, 402bhp, 5.7sec 0-62mph, 124mph Efficiency 2.5 miles per kWh (official), 2.2 miles per kWh (tested), 0g/km CO2 Energy cost 6.3p per mile Miles this month 25 Total miles 1222

Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron: interior, dashboard & infotainment

It's very hard to find fault with the q8 sportback e-tron's cabin – it feels beautifully built and there's loads of technology on offer.

Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron - interior

4.0 out of 5

4.5 out of 5

Quality inside the Q8 Sportback e-tron is exemplary. Nothing rattles, nothing shakes and the digital dashboard looks and feels absolutely first-rate – even four years after the car went on sale. Audi has stuffed its first electric car with technology and most of it works seamlessly, fitting into your daily duties without fuss.

This can’t be said of the Sportback e-tron's digital door mirrors, however. They’re standard on Vorsprung cars, and a £1,700 option on the rest of the range. We’d avoid them if you can; while you do get used to them eventually, if you find yourself hopping in and out of different cars, you’ll need extensive (and effective) recalibration of your brain to ensure safe operation. We think they’re a bit of a gimmick; the car is a quiet and refined place to spend time even with the bulkier, conventional door mirrors.

Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron dashboard

The Sportback e-tron's dashboard design is among the slickest in any price bracket. It looks premium without feeling too flash, with a pair of touchscreens allowing access to the infotainment system and climate control settings. These screens are complimented by a fully-digital 'Virtual Cockpit' instrument cluster, which is one of the most expertly-integrated systems on the market. You can switch between trip information and full-screen mapping at the flick of the switch, all without losing sight of things like speed and remaining range.

Quality is another high point for the Q8 Sportback e-tron. Everything feels beautifully built – and so it should for this car’s £70,000+ list price for the entry-level model. Stepping up through the trims brings extra kit, but there are few discernable interior changes between the entry-level Sport and the mid-spec S line and Black Edition models. You do get some S-embossed leather seats and dark matt aluminium inlays, but the standard car is so well-equipped we’d argue it’s not really worth the extra.

Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron - Virtual Cockpit

Equipment, options & accessories

Previously available in Technik, Sport, S Line, Black Edition and Vorsprung trims, the cheapest of those specs was dropped when the e-tron was facelifted and given the Q8 name. The lineup is identical across the conventional SUV and coupe-styled Sportback ranges, with prices for the sleeker version you see here starting from a smidge over £70,000.

Just like the regular Q8 e-tron, entry-level cars come with matrix LED headlights and 20-inch alloy wheels, plus Audi’s 'Virtual Cockpit' digital driver’s display and two central touchscreens – one for the infotainment and another to operate some of the car’s features. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, plus Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant, as standard.

Upgrading to S line gets you 21-inch wheels, adaptive sports air suspension – an upgrade from the standard-fit air springs in the basic Q8 – plus privacy glass and different interior trim. S line, as with the rest of the Audi range, gets slightly more purposeful styling, with body-coloured bumpers and a rear diffuser.

Above this sits the Black Edition, whereby the Sport and S line’s chrome is swapped out for darker trim, while switching the latter’s graphite grey wheels for gloss black rims. Vorsprung throws the options list out the window and ticks every conceivable box; 22-inch wheels, power-close doors, a panoramic roof, four-zone climate control and virtual door mirrors. These models also get a host of safety features including the Tour Pack, City Assist Pack and Parking Assist Pack.

The flagship SQ8 Sportback is available in Black Edition and Vorsprung trims, largely mirroring the kit available on the 50 e-tron and 55 e-tron models. In addition, the Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron Black Edition gets unique 21-inch wheels, different bumpers, black brake callipers and a Bang & Olufsen stereo, plus Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus and a head-up display. Vorsprung doubles down with heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel, plus the panoramic roof, virtual door mirror and 22-inch wheels mentioned above. Prices for this version nudge £117,000.

Audi Q8 Sportback e-tron - infotainment

Infotainment, apps & sat nav

It may not be as cutting edge as the Mercedes EQE SUV’s Hyperscreen, but there’s no denying the Q8 Sportback e-tron's infotainment system is packed with features. The graphics look slick and the menus are easy to navigate. If you don’t like the setup, you can hook up your smartphone using wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (both standard), as well as Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant, for a more familiar range of media and navigation apps.

The only thing we’re not sold on is the haptic touchscreen. Most of the features are hidden in one of the two central displays; one houses the infotainment system, including mapping and audio connectivity, while the lower screen allows access to the climate control and heated seats. However, unlike a more conventional touchscreen, the Audi setup requires a firm prod to activate. It feels like the engineers have tried to marry the feel and functionality of a conventional button with the convenience of a touchscreen, without much success.

Get the best price with What Car?

It may be a very slightly softer version of the Porsche Taycan, but be in no doubt that the Audi E-tron GT is an awesome-handling electric car. It’s also fast, comfortable and practical enough to pretty much meet your every whim. The Tesla Model S is quicker and roomier for families, and we favour (by a whisker) the Taycan's extra agility.

Equipment levels are high, so we don’t see any need to go beyond this entry-level e-tron GT. LED headlights, eight-way electric front seats and a 10.1in infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto come as standard. You’ll also enjoy other luxuries, including 20in alloy wheels, power-folding door mirrors, keyless entry, a powered boot lid with gesture control, privacy glass, a panoramic sunroof, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, adaptive dampers, heated front seats and three-zone climate control. In the RS model the offering is improved to include 21in alloys, 18-way electric front seats with massaging, matrix LED headlights, adaptive air suspension and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Whether you go for the e-tron GT or the RS e-tron GT you get the same 93kWh battery. The power tey offer differs, though, but even the ‘normal’ e-tron GT is extremely fast, covering 0-62mph in 4.1sec (we tested it hitting 0-60mph in 3.9sec). The RS model will do the same sprint in an absurdly rapid 3.3sec, which is there or thereabouts with the 2.8sec Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the Tesla Model S Long Range. The e-tron GT will officially do 295 miles from a full charge (and the RS 280 miles), which is similar to what the Taycan offers but some way off the claimed 412 miles of the Model S Long Range. In our testing we found a real-world range of 230 miles is achievable.

Driver assistance systems

Audi Q8

Share article

Whether parking, in the city or on long journeys – the Audi Q8 supports and relieves its driver in many situations. Audi bundles the individual assistance systems into a total of four packages – Tour, City, Parking plus and plus assist package

For long distances: the Tour assist package The central system in the Tour assist package is the adaptive cruise assist . It assists the driver with longitudinal and lateral control at speeds up to 250 km/h (155.3 mph) – substantially enhancing comfort on long journeys, in particular. It incorporates the functions of adaptive cruise control , traffic jam assist and active lane assist . The system detects lane markings, roadside structures, vehicles in adjacent lanes and vehicles driving ahead. In construction zones, the Audi Q8 automatically adapts its speed to the traffic situation, taking into account the speed limit. If the lane is too narrow to allow side-by-side driving, adaptive cruise assist enables offset driving through narrow stretches.

In combination with the efficiency assist , the adaptive cruise assist slows and accelerates the Audi Q8 predictively by analyzing sensor information, navigation data and traffic signs. It automatically adjusts to the current speed limit, reduces the speed before corners, during turning and on roundabouts. The system always considers a driving style in keeping with the selected driving program, from efficient to sporty, and thus with its predictions optimally supports the advantages of the mild hybrid technology (MHEV).

If the adaptive cruise assist is deactivated, the efficiency assist displays predictive tips in the instrument cluster and also provides haptic feedback through the active accelerator pedal. By so doing the system helps the driver to drive efficiently. This results from the use of the MHEV recuperation and the intelligent selection of coasting or thrust, depending on the events ahead.

The emergency assist ensures safety in exceptional circumstances. It detects within system limits whether the driver is inactive and, in such cases, prompts them via visual and acoustic signals as well as brief activation of the brakes to retake active control. If this does not prompt a reaction, the system takes control of the Audi Q8 and automatically stops it in its own lane. This also activates the safety measures of Audi pre sense and triggers an automatic emergency call, depending on the country.

The Tour package also comes with Audi pre sense front including turn assist and collision avoidance assist , as well as camera-based traffic sign recognition .

For the urban jungle: the City assist package Five systems provide safety in city traffic. The crossing assist uses mid-range radars at the front corners of the vehicle that can measure to a distance of roughly 75 meters (246.1 ft) . If they detect critical crossing traffic in front of the car, the system notifies the driver of the hazard visually and acoustically and applies the brakes if necessary. Audi pre sense 360° also warns of vehicles approaching from the side. The cross traffic assist rear detects approaching vehicles when slowly driving backwards, for example when backing out of a parking spot perpendicular to the road. Exit warning and lane change warning system audi side assist supplement the package.

For maneuvering: the Parking plus assist package The systems of the Parking plus assist package, which will be added in early 2019, helps drivers with maneuvering. Maneuvering assist helps to avoid imminent collisions with small steering impulses and autonomous braking to a standstill, for example when detecting pillars in a multi-story parking garage. Curb warning protects against damaging the rims when parking. Multiple images from the 360 degree cameras allow precise maneuvering down to the centimeter and provide a view of crossing traffic and a detailed view of the wheels. The highlight is the 3D view with freely selectable perspective.

The package also includes the (remote) parking pilot , which autonomously steers the SUV into and out of a parking space. The driver monitors the maneuver but does not have sit in the car – a major advantage, particularly with tight parking spaces. He or she starts and monitors the parking process on their smartphone using the myAudi app. The remote garage pilot offers a similar level of convenience. Thanks to the laser scanner, it can get very close to walls and other obstacles such as bicycles in a garage. It is part of the plus assist package, which combines all three packages.

For special requirements: the individual options Audi also offers a number of assist systems separately. One highlight for driving with a trailer is the improved trailer maneuver assist . It automatically guides the trailer while reversing in the direction the driver set by swiping on the lower MMI display. The camera image on the upper display shows the current and the desired reversing angle. The driver can observe the maneuver accordingly and steer in the desired direction at any time. Audi also supplies

park assist separately, if desired. This steers the Q8 virtually automatically into parallel and perpendicular parking spaces – forwards or backwards. The driver only has to accelerate, select the gear and brake. The night vision assist improves difficult visibility after dark. It uses an infrared camera to detect pedestrians and larger wild animals at great distances and marks them with a yellow frame in the Audi virtual cockpit.

Precision on a whole new level: the zFAS and the laser scanner Behind all of these features is a computer the size of a tablet PC that is mounted under the driver’s seat – the standard central driver assistance controller (zFAS). It continuously computes a differentiated model of the surroundings. This central environmental model enables the assist systems to react precisely and in good time to objects, such as by initiating braking. Navigation also becomes highly precise, because the sensor data fusion locates the driver’s car down to the exact lane.

Depending on the selected options, the zFAS receives the data to do this from up to five radar sensors, six cameras, twelve ultrasound sensors and the laser scanner . Mounted in the left section of the Singleframe, the latter covers a field about 80 meters (262.5 ft) in length and a wide angle of aperture of 145 degrees. Within this field, it detects objects with sharp contours, even in the dark. In bad weather, its covering panel is automatically cleaned and heated.

  • Audi appears to be working on a high-performance version of the Q6 e-tron.
  • The model would slot above the SQ6 e-tron and have more than 600 hp.
  • The crossover will likely be heavily influenced by the upcoming RS6 e-tron.

When Audi introduced the Q6 and SQ6 e-tron last month, they promised more variants were on the horizon. Spy photographers have apparently caught one of them as this prototype is believed to be the RS Q6 Sportback e-tron.

While that’s just a guess, there are a few clues this isn’t your run-of-the-mill electric crossover . The biggest resides up front as the model has an aggressive fascia with a large intake and vertical air curtains.

More: 2025 Audi Q6 And SQ6 E-Tron Debut With Up To 510 HP And 388 Miles Of Range

Further back, we can see a beefy braking system with red calipers. While the prototype eschews drilled discs, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them on the production model.

While the body doesn’t look too remarkable at first glance, the prototype has vertical front fender vents. They blend in with the camouflage, but are notable as they’re not found on the SQ6 e-tron.

SH Proshots

The rest of the design appears to largely carryover, but there could be a few surprises hiding beneath the disguise. That being said, the cabin should be familiar and include an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment system, and a 10.9-inch front passenger display. Besides the usual tech features, we can expect sport seats, carbon fiber trim, and plenty of RS badging.

Little is known about the model at this point, but the SQ6 e-tron has a 100 kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel drive system. The latter produces 483 hp (360 kW / 489 PS), although that figure jumps to 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS) with launch control.

This setup enables the crossover to accelerate from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in around 4.2 seconds. The SQ6 e-tron also has a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h) as well as a WLTP range of up to 372 miles (598 km).

The RS Q6 Sportback e-tron would obviously build on those numbers and likely echo the Porsche Macan Turbo Electric . That particular model has 630 hp (470 kW / 639 PS) and can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.1 seconds.

Updated 2025 Audi E-Tron GT caught on video

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Audi's E-Tron GT is set to come in for a facelift, and a new prototype has been spotted.

The E-Tron GT is an electric performance sedan developed by the Audi Sport division and closely related to the Porsche Taycan, which recently debuted in updated form, receiving more range, performance, and faster charging. Both models use an EV platform referred to internally as the J1.

The updated Taycan debuted as a 2025 model for the U.S. market, and the same will likely be true for the updated E-Tron GT. The covers should come off shortly, as Audi has already started a teaser campaign .

Judging by the prototypes spotted, there will be new fascia designs front and rear, and possibly tweaks to the lights. The front fascia sports a completely new design that helps to visually increase the width of the car. The rear fascia looks similar to the current design but appears to have a new diffuser design.

The interior will likely feature some updates as well, perhaps focused on the infotainment system. The car should also pick up Volkswagen Group's latest matrix LED headlight technology, which is both brighter and less prone to dazzling other drivers than the current technology. The new lighting technology made its debut in the updated 2024 Porsche Cayenne .

For mechanical updates, Audi has confirmed an improved suspension system with new levels of adjustment. This is likely a reference to the dual-valve dampers that were added to the updated Taycan. The dampers allow for adjustment of both rebound and compression, resulting in a wider performance bandwidth when it comes to comfort and handling control.

The updated Taycan's battery has grown from 93 to 105 kwh, and this will likely be the case for the updated E-Tron GT, meaning more range. Charging speeds should also be faster. Looking again to the updated Taycan, the updated E-Tron GT's maximum charging rate should come in at 320 kw, up from the current 270 kw.

Horsepower should get a significant boost as well. There are rumors of Audi adding a new RS Performance E-Tron GT flagship, possibly with a peak output approaching the 938 hp of the Taycan Turbo S. Performance in the E-Tron currently tops out with the RS E-Tron GT grade whose peak output registers at 637 hp with boost mode (normally 597 hp), or enough for 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.1 seconds and a governed top speed of around 155 mph. The regular E-Tron GT's output tops out at 522 hp with boost mode (normally 496 hp).
