Gorillaz Announce September 2023 U.S. Concerts

Gorillaz are making a four-stop tour of the United States this September, with shows in Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, and Boston. Support at the Getaway Shows comes from Kaytranada, Lil Yachty, and Remi Wolf. The band canceled the tour on June 22.

Gorillaz released Cracker Island in February. Since then, Damon Albarn and his cartoon bandits have played a pair of star-studded shows at Coachella , including Bad Bunny and Beck on the second weekend and De La Soul and Thundercat before that. Albarn’s other band, Blur, announced their first album in 8 years this month.

Gorillaz is heading out on the road for a special tour this fall. On Tuesday (May 30), the group announced The Getaway 2023 tour, which is scheduled to take place in September.

The Getaway tour comes on the heels of Gorillaz’s back-to-back performances at Coachella in April. The trek follows the quartet’s 2022 World Tour led by Damon Albarn and a 14-piece live band, which featured multiple guest performers.

Gorillaz Announce ‘The Getaway’ Tour

Limited Run of U.S. Shows with Support on All Dates from KAYTRANADA, Lil Yachty and Remi Wolf

Gorillaz today announced The Getaway, a series of four U.S. shows slated for this Fall, with support from KAYTRANADA, Lil Yachty and Remi Wolf. The Getaway will be the final run of U.S. dates in support of the band’s recently released smash album Cracker Island , and will kick off on Sunday, September 10 at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, with stops at Q2 Stadium in Austin on Wednesday, September 13 and Credit 1 Union Amphitheatre in Chicago on September 16, before wrapping up on Tuesday, September 19 at Boston’s Fenway Park. The Fall dates find 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel on the run in the U.S., having packed into their van following Gorillaz’ recent back-to-back Coachella performances – the first of which inspired The Los Angeles Times to proclaim “Gorillaz rule Day 1,” the second described by Uproxx as “electrifying” – and their highly successful 2022 World Tour led by Damon Albarn and the 14-piece live band, aided and abetted by a varying cast of guest performers.

TICKETS: Tickets will be available starting with a Live Nation presale beginning Wednesday, May 31st at 10 AM local time. The general onsale will begin Friday, June 2nd at 10 AM local time at Gorillaz.com .

'Feel Good' concert of the year? How Gorillaz delivered the euphoria in Phoenix concert

Damon Albarn was enjoying the hell out of connecting with his fans in Phoenix Monday, grinning like a schoolboy as Gorillaz threw themselves into bringing a crowd that stretched from preteens in Gorillaz shirts to fans in their 40s and 50s together as one nation under a groove.

Albarn wandered through the crowd on several occasions, threatening to crowd surf three songs in on "Tranz" and waving his hands in the air (like he just didn't care) with a look of pure euphoria on "White Light."

He donned a captain's hat in the course of a crowd-pleasing version of "19-2000" while leading a smile-inducing singalong of "Get the cool/ Get the cool shoeshine" and took selfies (or possibly videos) with one fan's phone on "Cracker Island."

That enthusiasm was beyond contagious.

And it doesn't hurt that Albarn happens to be blessed with one of the most versatile, distinctive and emotionally captivating voices of his generation, which more than rose to the occasion Monday, especially on songs that played to his more soulful instincts.

Gorillaz' creative mix of rock and hip-hop

Perhaps the most consistently creative mix of forward-thinking rock 'n' roll and hip-hop since the genres started interacting in the ‘80s, Gorillaz have provided Damon Albarn an amazingly elastic vehicle with which to push the boundaries of his artistic vision even further than he's managed at the helm of Blur.

It's a diverse commingling of genres that has blurred whatever artificial boundaries exist between them while giving Gorillaz a cultural currency in 2022 that's left the singer's fellow Britpop veterans of the '90s in the NME Where Are They Now? files.

Albarn and his bandmates are merely vessels performing the works of Gorillaz, the world's most successful virtual band, led by a keyboard-playing vocalist, 2-D, who sounds suspiciously like Albarn; with bassist Murdoc Niccals; a woman known only as Noodle on lead guitar, keyboards and vocals; and Russel Hobbs on drums.

Those Gorillaz drew rapturous applause as animated images from their videos flooded the screen behind the musicians. 

Albarn launched Gorillaz as a side gig in 1998 with Jamie Hewlett, his roommate at the time, whose claim to pre-Gorillaz fame was having co-created and illustrated “Tank Girl," releasing their seminal, self-titled full-length debut in 2001 with art and videos by Hewlett.

The 'Feel Good' nature of collaboration

A large part of what makes Gorillaz work is Albarn’s fondness for collaboration, whether creating a virtual universe with Hewlett or inviting Stevie Nicks and Bad Bunny to join him in the studio for their eighth album, "Cracker Island," due to drop in February.

Fans who caught their concert one night earlier in Inglewood, California, were treated to walk-ons by Thundercat, Beck, Del the Funky Homosapien and Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara in addition to the guests we saw in Phoenix. And that was two nights after being joined by ScHoolboy Q and Tame Impala.

It's the sort of thing that maybe should've taken some small fraction of the shine off this performance.

But it hardly seemed to matter. That's how entertaining this performance was.

Atlanta hip-hop duo EarthGang, who opened the concert with an energetic show of force on such crowd-pleasing highlights as a speed-rapping "Top Down" and a soulful "Strong Friends," returned to the stage for a highly addictive shot of “Opium.”

Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde rocked the mic on several songs, revisiting his rap on the Gorillaz classic “Dirty Harry” as the set was building  returning to kick off the encore with “New Gold” and recent single “Stylo.”

De La Soul led the crowd in a near-euphoric singalong of “Feel Good Inc." after setting it up with Posdnous leading a motivational-speaker-style call-and-response that ended on a hilarious note that anyone paying attention had to know was coming.

"I need you to say I feel strong," he testified. "I feel confident. I feel extraordinary. Actually, I think I might ... FEEL GOOD."

It was ridiculous — the best kind of ridiculous. 

"Feel Good Inc." is a tough act to follow, even when it's not preceded by such glorious displays of showmanship.

But Gorillaz somehow managed to build on that momentum, bringing the encore to a spirited conclusion with “Clint Eastwood,” their iconic breakthrough single, playing it straight at first until the British reggae toaster Sweetie Irie emerged from the wings to lead them in a dancehall remix.

There were also video appearances by Thundercat (on "Cracker Island"), Little Dragon (on "Empire Ants"), Shaun Ryder (on "Dare"), Slowthai (on "Momentary Bliss") and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker (on "New Gold"), as well as animated likenesses of Simonon, Jones, Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed and De La Soul in the video that accompanied a wonderfully wistful performance of "On Melancholy Hill."

An image of soul great Bobby Womack, who joined them live in Phoenix last time they were here and died in 2014, appeared on screen during their first live performance of "Cloud of Unknowing" since 2017.

Relentless grooves, punkish intensity and soul

Much of their performance seemed to focus on grooving as relentlessly as possible with the five-piece Humanz Choir underscoring Albarn’s soulful vocals and occasionally stepping out to take the spotlight.

Michelle Ndegwa pulled in one of Monday's most enthusiastic crowd responses during the gospel-tinged climax of "Kids With Guns."

At least two highlights rocked with a practically punkish intensity — the electrifying conclusion of their opening song, "M1 A1" and the jaw-dropping back half of "Skinny Ape," a new song that worked its way up to the fireworks through several soulful verses recalling the bleary-eyed vulnerability of the Blur song "Tender."

And the changeups were just as effective.

Albarn sat at the piano, reinventing “O Green World” from the post-punk robofunk of the original recording to something surprisingly subdued (that also gave in to those post-punk leanings in the loud parts).

No Clash? No problem

The last time Albarn came to Phoenix, in 2010, Gorillaz' touring lineup included the Clash's Mick Jones on guitar and Paul Simonon (the guy smashing his bass on the cover of "London Calling," who also played in one of Albarn's other other bands, the Good, the Bad & the Queen) on bass. 

This lineup didn't have that sort of history behind it. But that hardly mattered either. 

They were great. And not just great but energetic, tight and also very entertaining.

In addition to Albarn, whose duties ranged from singing and rapping to playing keyboards, guitar and melodica, this version of Gorillaz featured longtime lead guitarist Jeff Wootton, bassist Oluwaseye Adelekan, drummer Femi Koleoso, percussionist Karl Vanden-Bossche and musical director Mike Smith on keys.

That's in addition to those previously mentioned backup singers: Angel Williams-Silvera, Jesse Appiah, Michelle Ndegwa, Petra Luke and Rebecca Freckleton. 

At one point, Albarn pulled out what he told us was a very special golden horn — the sort of horn he only blows on very special nights. 

Of course, this happened to have been one of those special nights. 

It was the sort of thing you know an artist does in every city. But that also hardly mattered, coming at the tail end of a joyous celebration of Gorillaz' catalog where you could see how special it was written in the goofy grin that seemed forever etched on Albarn's face.

Gorillaz Transform Vancouver Into Cracker Island at North American Tour Kickoff: Review, Photos and Setlist

The opening night of the 2022 run included special guests Pharcyde's Bootie Brown, De La Soul's Posdnuos, and Sweetie Irie

Gorillaz kicked off their North American tour on Sunday night (September 11th) to a packed Rogers Arena in Vancouver, BC. The immersive experience demonstrated why the virtual band is one of the most influential acts of the past two decades — and why they’re not to be missed in person (grab tickets to the tour here ).

Co-creator, frontman, and primary contributor Damon Albarn was like a conductor, lovingly leading his sprawling live ensemble and exceptional backing singers. Arranged on glittering risers like an orchestra, they played underneath a big screen showing artist Jamie Hewlett’s iconic animated band members — Murdoc, Noodle, Russel, and 2D — while dancing lights bathed the room in color.

Gorillaz have been masters of experimental storytelling right from the outset, creating vast, multidimensional, multimedia universes for their eclectic music to live and breathe in. Their 2001 eponymous debut , for example, had interactive online features that allowed visitors to virtually explore Murdoc’s Winnebago (the RV has become an icon in Gorillaz mythology), while 2020’s collaborative audiovisual web project Song Machine had songs, featuring artists like Robert Smith, Slowthai, and Elton John, released episodically as music videos.

Gorilla an schulen, das läuft aber was ist eigentlich mit der offenen jugendarbeit zusammen mit unserem neuen partner laureus starten wir in unserem jubiläumsjahr den pilot für eine freestyle tour in der ganzen deutschschweiz. bei zehn jugendtreffs und anderen freizeit-institutionen werden skate-workshops mit jugendlichen durchgeführt. als kick off hat laureus am 5. november den „laureus freestyle day“ organisiert, an dem 100 kinder mit der skate-legende tony hawk und anderen laureus botschaftern skaten konnten..

Skate Legende Tony Hawk ist am Laureus Freestyle Day dabei Die «GORILLA Freestyle Tour» wird ab dem Frühjahr 2023 durchgeführt. Der Kick-off fand bereits am 5. November in der Freestyle Academy in Flims statt, und zwar mit dem Laureus Freestyle Day. Mit dabei waren grosse Namen aus der Freestyle-Szene: Laureus Academy Member und Skate-Legende Tony Hawk und die beiden Laureus Botschafter Gian Simmen (Snowboard Olympiasieger) und Andri Ragettli (Freeski Weltmeister). 100 Kinder und Jugendliche konnten an diesem Tag mit ihren Idolen skaten oder Trampolin springen.

Neue Partnerschaft mit der Laureus Stiftung Das Ziel der Laureus Stiftung Schweiz ist es, mit Hilfe des Sports Kindern und Jugendlichen ein positives und selbstbestimmtes Leben zu ermöglichen. Die Stiftung fördert junge Menschen, die Unterstützung brauchen – unabhängig von Geschlecht, Herkunft, Religion, sozialer Schicht oder gesundheitlichen Einschränkungen. Mit dem neuen sozialen Sportprogramm «GORILLA Freestyle Tour powered by Laureus» wird die Gesundheit Jugendlicher durch Freestylesport, insbesondere mit der Trendsportart Skaten gefördert.

GORILLA Freestyle Tour In den Skate Workshops an ausgewählten Standorten in der Deutschschweiz tauchen Jugendliche im Alter von 13-18 Jahren in die Welt des Freestyle-Sports ein und werden zu mehr Bewegung im Alltag und einem gesunden Lebensstil motiviert. Skaten benötigt Überwindung, es fördert die Kreativität und stärkt die Selbstwirksamkeit. So schafft die Freestyle-Sportart eine wichtige Basis, damit die Jugendlichen Verantwortung für ihr Wohlbefinden übernehmen und ihr Potential entfalten können. Damit die Jugendlichen regelmässig und selbstorganisiert die vorhandene Infrastruktur nutzen und weitere Tricks lernen und üben können, wird im Anschluss an die Workshops kostenloses Skate-Material pro Standort abgegeben. Ebenfalls finden die Jugendlichen Zugang zu einer Video-Plattform, auf welcher sie Tipps und Tricks zum Skateboarden finden und sie zum Dranbleiben motiviert.

Gorillaz have announced a North American tour — their first since 2018 — which will kick off this fall. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

Damon Albarn and Company’s 22-date trek launches in Vancouver at Rogers Arena and culminates at FTXArena in Miami on Oct. 23. The virtual act will include the 14-piece Gorillaz live band along with currently unannounced guest performers. EarthGang is set to open the tour through Oct. 19, with Jungle taking the opening slot Oct. 21 and 23.

Last year, the group dropped a massive 20th anniversary box set of their self-titled debut. It followed 2020’s Song Machine: Season One — Strange Timez , comprising star-studded singles from their Song Machine series.

Albarn also made a surprise appearance during Billie Eilish’s headlining Coachella set in April along with De La Soul rapper Posdnuos for a performance of Gorillaz’ 2005 Demon Days smash “Feel Good Inc.”

Gorillaz announced a short 2023 tour. Here’s how to get tickets today

I n April 2023, Gorillaz performed a show-stopping set at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival that seamlessly blended live-action theatricality with jumbotron-sized animation as well as hip-hop with abstract art rock.

This summer, Damon Albarn aka 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs are doing it all over again.

From Sept. 10-19, the “Feel Good Inc.” group is embarking on their four-concert ‘The Getaway Shows’ mini tour playing stadiums and amphitheaters all over North America along with special guests Kaytranada, Lil Yachty and Remi Wolf.

While they currently don’t have a New York show on the quick run, they will come close when they perform at Boston’s Fenway Park on Sept. 19.

And if you need tickets to hear “Clint Eastwood,” “On Melancholy Hill,” “Dirty Harry,” “Plastic Beach” and tracks from their latest album “Cracker Island” as soon as today, you’re in luck.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, June 2, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

The Absolute Safari

I did the Absolute Safari from Nairobi to Cape Town with Absolute Africa. It was a very long trip but the whole time I knew I did not want to leave. Travelling with Absolute Africa becomes like a lifestyle- you camp, cook, wash and clean as a team. I was fortunate because I was with a great bunch of people and a very helpful and kind tour guide. I really enjoyed my trip with Absolute. I would not recommend Absolute Africa if you are looking for comfortable and easy travelling as there are some challenging days. My highlights on the trip were, in no particular order, the Serengeti, Lake Malawi, Zanzibar, Ngorogoro Crater, Matobo National Park, Vic Falls and the Deadvlei. I can also honestly say that the people on my trip and my tour guide were a highlight too. I will never forget my experiences in Africa, and it was difficult for me to leave. I would recommend Absolute Africa for budget travellers and I would highly recommend Manache Nicklaa as a tour guide. Manache was always very professional and friendly. He will talk to anyone and he always did his best to help anyone who needed it. Manache has a very friendly persona and you can have a laugh with him too. He is very warm and just makes you feel safe and welcome!

It was a very different experience from any travel I’ve done before and was a little outside of my normal comfort zone but both the guides and fellow travelers were awesome, very helpful and very patient.

The lodges we stayed in were super clean and in a purely natural setting. Am very grateful to all the team especially my guide Veronica who was very knowledgeable about Uganda. Solomon who was our driver took good care of us on the roads and we felt safe entirely. Thank you Mukisa Safaris. We got more than we expected. We will surely return for an extension to the North and North Eastern part of Uganda.

Is Serengeti National Park Worth Visiting? Why You Shouldn’t Go to the Serengeti? Tanzania Safaris . The Serengeti National Park Tanzania ranks as one of the most famous Safari destinations in the world. The fact that Serengeti is more than worth it as a tourist destination because it is hands down one of the best safari destinations in Africa. This park is home to all of the big five animals and is also famous for the great wildebeest migration event . If you are coming to Kenya for safari, then Serengeti may be too much of a hustle since you will need to cross the border.

In this article, I will prove why you should consider going to the Serengeti but also give a few reasons why other parks may be more appropriate for you to visit ;

What makes the Serengeti such a great safari destination? and Is Serengeti National Park Worth Visiting?

It’s a variety of animals: From its vastness to the highest concentration of animals, the Serengeti is unmistakably worth it.

A large variety of animals: Serengeti is a safari home to all the big 5 and has 500 species of birds and 300 species of mammals. Most of the animals here are only found in the Serengeti thus making them a great treat for any foreign visitor.

Varied and breathtaking landscapes; The Serengeti is comprised of several different landscapes and this variation adds to the beauty of the park that you will enjoy when you visit it.

The Maasai people; This is a unique traditional tribe that settled in both Kenya and Tanzania. The interesting thing about them is that they still live the same way they lived thousands of decades ago and many visitors enjoy viewing the Maasai People dance and perform ancient rituals.

Animals you will find in the Serengeti

One of the things that determine whether a safari destination is worth visiting?

Well, Serengeti National Park has an almost complete list of all the animals that you would expect to see on an African safari. Although, it has the big 4 of the Big 5 animal species like lions, Elephants, Buffalos, and African leopards the only missing animal from this list is the ‘’Rhino’’. More to that, you should expect to find thousands of common safari animals like wildebeest and antelopes grazing in the vast expanse of the park.

With the great number of wildlife, Serengeti National Park – definitely is worth a visit.

Don’t go to the Serengeti if –

Tips to consider when visiting the Serengeti before visiting other destinations;

If you have visited the Mara; If you’ve already visited the Maasai Mara National reserve   Kenya, Serengeti may not work out for you. Because the Maasai Mara and Serengeti share a similar ecosystem you are likely to observe the same animals and have a similar experience in both parks. However, some prefer visiting both national parks and this decision comes with its logistical challenges.

If wildlife does not fascinate you; If you’re one of the very few people in the world who is not interested in wild animals then the Serengeti National Park and any of the other parks in any African safari destinations may not be worth it for you. Because I don’t think that’s you.

If you are crossing over from Kenya Just for the Serengeti; at this point, you may have already visited several Kenyan National Parks and may be more remarkable in going to the Serengeti instead of the Maasai Mara. Here are my reasons;

Firstly crossing over from Kenya to Tanzania requires additional immigration checks for foreign visitors and this may be a hassle to visit one park.

You are required to present a yellow fever immunization card at the border point.

A number of the animals that you’ve already visited in Kenyan parks is pretty similar to those you will find at the Serengeti. The journey may not be as interesting as you could imagine since you have already had a similar experience in Kenya.

If you are not prepared for insect bites; Like most of the other safari destinations you will visit, the Serengeti has a lot of harm, especially in the wetter seasons- a season of battling with mosquitoes. Additionally, Serengeti National Park is well–known for having tsetse flies whose bites are sharper than those of a mosquito and sometimes experience sleeping sickness. If you fear sleeping around by tiny bugs, then don’t  visit the  Serengeti

If seeing rhinos is on your bucket list for the safari; Fact, the park only has black Rhinos which are also very difficult to view. For this matter, if rhinos are part of your safari bucket list on African safari then Serengeti is not recommended for you. Rather consider visiting Lake Nakuru National Park or Nairobi National Park in Kenya –if you absolutely wish to see the Rhino on your safari.

Lastly, Serengeti is worth visiting especially if you are to adventure the rest of your safari in Tanzania. The journey may not be worth it to those traveling from Kenya but you have to be sure that you are going to enjoy some of the most beautiful and memorable scenery that you will ever see in your life.
