The catamaran has four double cabins with private bathroom and two small single cabins in the front ( see layout ). Two double cabins have double beds, the other two cabins have split double beds. If you are single, you share a cabin with split double bed, or, if not available, with double bed. If you are single and you don't like to share a cabin, we have two small, cheaper, single Crew cabins in the front, only accessible from the deck.

Thailand Gay Catamaran Sailing Cruise: Phuket - Ko Phi Phi - Patong Itinerary

Day 1 - Phuket Boarding in Phuket after 5:30 pm. The skipper will welcome you with a welcome drink and show you your cabin. Dinner in the restaurant of the marina.

Day 2 - Koh Yao Yai Koh Yao Yai 20 nm. The first day of our cruise through the tropical paradise of Phang-nga Bay takes you westward toward Krabi Province. At the south end of Koh Yao Yai we have an excellent anchorages for all seasons and we will have dinner in the restaurant of the nice resort on the beach.

Day 3 - Railay Beach, Krabi Railay Beach – 20 nm. The next stop on our Phuket itinerary is just a sail to the mainland, with its gorgeous beaches and secluded bays. Krabi is world-famous for its beauty, and Rai Le Beach is a prime example of what makes this part of Thailand so popular. Catering to more laid-back guys, Railay Beach offers excellent snorkeling on the coral reef and swimming off a pristine white-sand beach lined with coconut palms. Pleasant beachfront restaurants serve simple fare, and you can relax with a cool drink in the shade and admire the sparkling waters of the Andaman Sea.

Day 4 - Koh Puh Our next destination is Koh Puh , also named Koh Sum - a island of many extensive, white sand beaches. We stay away from the more touristy north end; our little hideout is a wonderful beach in the south, with just a few restaurants and beach bars (reggae seems to be the latest "cool" thing here! ) Well off the main tourist track,

Day 5 - Koh Phi Phi Don Koh Phi Phi Don – 20 nm. Sailing nearly due east takes us to the Phi Phi Islands, one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Thailand. Phi Phi Don is the largest island in the group and has the best anchorage and facilities at Ton Sai Bay, where we'll find restaurants and bars with lively nightlife.

Day 6 - Ko Rancha Yai Ko Rancha Yai . After the partycrowd on Koh Phi Phi Island, today we sail to a smal Island south of Phuket Island to relax and recover :).

Day 7 - Patong Patong. Today we sail along the west coast to the popular town Patong. At night we will visit the local gay life.

Day 8 - Patong Day of for the guys who stay two weeks . Have a look at Patong Gay beach and Patong town or book an excursion on Phuket Island. For the other guys, this is the time to hop on or -off the yacht for the one week cruise. At night the last change to visit the local gay life.

For context, I’m a 35yo, white, gay, cis man. I just completed a two week cruise with GaySail in Phuket Thailand. I can’t imagine a better way to experience a country for the first time, have some adventure, meet new friends, and completely relax. At the start of my planning, I was looking for exposure to Thai culture, an opportunity to chill out, and have some fun and excitement with other gay men. I got what I asked for and more. I’m leaving this trip with deep friendships and I cannot wait to book my next GaySail adventure. We were able to see some amazing sights, intimate islands, private/nearly private beaches, big and small communities, and many beautiful places. We also had many spectacular dinners at beautiful resorts and restaurants. You get to know your crew mates very well! Some people were there for two full weeks and others departed after one. The age range of passengers was very wide, but leans older (~21-70); folks seemed to be cisgender men. One of my crew mates had been on 6 GaySail trips, so we had a veteran expert that helped set expectations, build community, and be the welcoming agent. Our Skipper and Cook were a lovely couple who’s expertise was clear from the beginning; they offered us a safe and low key environment with plenty of opportunities to learn about sailing. We were on a catamaran; I had a crew cabin and my travel buddy had a double cabin. The interior cabins seemed to be self contained with storage and electrical plugs. The crew cabin was VERY simple (only a small bed, light, and small fan), but I was able to store my bag elsewhere and I had access to the basics in the shared space. This trip is not for the fussy traveler. There are shared bathrooms, family style breakfast and lunch, and shared chores (mainly dishes). It’s important to note that the Skipper and Cook are expert volunteers and fellow travelers, they are not staff. You’re on a yacht/boat for a significant portion of each day and night, so you must learn to make space for each other quickly. Group dinners seemed to be mandatory and are paid for by the kitty, so it’s best to know that going in. I’d recommend getting to your destination early and expect to stay for a few days after. It’s best to recover from jet lag before getting on the water and to avoid a tight schedule when you depart. Read more Written January 10, 2023

Thailand is one of the most tolerant countries in Asia, shaped by Buddhist values and a mai pen rai attitude that allow LGBTQ culture to thrive. While outward displays of affection are frowned upon and LGBTQ rights are not fully cemented in law, ladyboys and tom-dees proliferate in modern Thai culture. Gay marriage in Thailand is still not formally recognised, but, despite this, many same-sex couples travel to the nation to have their union blessed by Buddhist monks.

Get sweaty in Bangkok alongside Thailand’s most streetwise locals and young backpackers from across the globe. Where East truly meets West, Bangkok melds traditional Buddhist ways of life with outrageous hedonism, creating a vibrant atmosphere ripe for exploration. Despite being one of Thailand’s more expensive cities with its fair share of hustlers, Bangkok is still among the most affordable cities in the world, where tuk-tuks tout for the price of a sandwich and hip boutique stores compete on price.

The veritable capital of ‘Gay Asia’, Bangkok is the first call for gay parties across the continent, boasting an infamous party scene to make even Ru Paul blush. While backpackers abound in cheap accommodations and the red light scene, there is more to the nightlife here. There are countless cabarets, clubs, saunas, go-go and karaoke bars around the city, with LGBT offerings centred in Silom. Outside of Silom, you’ll also find Sukhumvit Road, Aor Tor Gor and Khao San Road ready to welcome you. While some Bangkok gay bars and clubs are more respectable than others, if it’s plush sophistication you’re after, the city can provide. Try a roof-top infinity pool to escape the heat or check into a luxury hotel complete with spa, bar and bistro. 2. Koh Samet

One such day trip from Bangkok is to the glorious Koh Samet, known fondly as Thailand’s gayest island. Just two hours’ drive from the capital towards the southeast, Koh Samet is an ideal location for a weekend escape to the beach. Popular among Bangkok’s middle and upper classes, as much as the international gay community, Koh Samet serves laid-back parties in a tropical paradise, with crowds and prices peaking on the weekend. Like most Thai islands, Koh Samet is similarly gorgeous, with endless sunshine on palm-strewn beaches kissed by turquoise waters. Part of the Khao Laem Ya Ko Samet National Park, Koh Samet has an entry fee of 200 baht ($6USD) but this small amount goes towards protecting the natural environment and wildlife ecosystems on land and at sea.

Choose a beach based on your personality; party people can mingle and undertake water sports on Haad Sai Kaew and Ao Hin Khok; families can have fun on Ao Wong Duean; while shyer beachgoers can enjoy a romantic escape to Ao Wa, Ao Pakarang or Ao Kiew Na Nok. For one of the best beaches in gay Thailand travel straight to Ao Phai, home of the Silver Sands Bar and open-air nightclub and neighbour to Ao Tubtim, Koh Samet’s unofficial gay beach. Ao Tubtim was put on the map by Tub Tim Resort, another of the island’s best gay beach bars. Straighter and more Thai-style than what’s on offer in Phuket or Pattaya, nightlife on Koh Samet is for tourists and Bangkok gays keen on beachside karaoke and Thai pop disco.

If Koh Samet was likened to Baby Spice then Pattaya would definitely be Scary Spice, the wildest of Thailand’s many islands. Famed for its boys, epic nightlife and cheap, cheap luxury, Pattaya is bound to please those who really wanna zigazig ah. The Pattaya gay scene begins on the beach and moves into town come sundown. For gay-friendly beach days, try the popular Dongtan and Jomtien Beaches, before heading to the Walking Street entertainment district for cabarets, clubs, bars and raucous karaoke sessions. The Boyztown district sees the majority of gay bars, massage shops, restaurants and gay-oriented accommodations, seconded only by Sunee Plaza for go-go clubs and more massage. Alternatively, dive into the more exclusive world of Pattaya, splashing a little extra on luxury accommodation, rooftop pools, world-class spas and fine dining experiences.

While Pattaya has seen years of overdevelopment and a sex trade run rampant, most recently the government has begun efforts to restore the island’s natural beauty and crack down on illicit trade. And although the sex industry is very much alive here, there is now emphasis on sustainable development and vanilla-flavoured fun for all.

Another beach paradise with a reputation for naughtiness is the southern island of Phuket, hosting luxurious villas that overlook the Andaman Sea. Equally as affordable as Pattaya yet becoming more expensive each year, Phuket offers much of the same craziness as above. Complete your bingo card of things to do in Thailand; trying a cabaret, club or go-go bar and revelling in the lack of inhibition, or go upmarket to Phuket’s burgeoning luxury resorts, where cocktail bars, fine dining, classy spas and infinity pools lie in wait.

Gay Phuket is centred on the “Paradise Complex” of Patong, an area compacted to a few pedestrian streets with bars, cafés, clubs and restaurants competing to attract the foreign LGBTQ community. The more straight orientated party area runs along Bangla Road. For beachside fun, the rainbow-lined Patong beach is the top Phuket gay beach, running 3.5 kilometres alongside the beach resort town of Patong. Ever popular among gays and the starting point of Phuket Pride, Patong Beach is regularly packed. For a more chilled option, try Karon Beach to the south just below Patong or Bangtao Beach, a short drive north, where the popular gay hangout spot known as Dream Beach Club lies.

5. Koh Samui

Smaller and more stylish than either Phuket or Pattaya, Koh Samui is the east coast’s answer to island utopia with a fair amount of partying thrown in. Blessed with enviable weather, vast beaches and luxury lodgings, Koh Samui is the one to go to if you want to wind down in style. One of Thailand’s partying capitals, a short boat ride from the full-moon parties of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui offers extravagant, gay-friendly nightlife with the added bonus of cheaper drinks and fewer crowds. What’s more, is the island’s myriad daytime activities; from sundown, yachting to waterfall trekking in Angthong National Marine Park.

While affordability is one of Koh Samui’s key selling points, the island is not short of indulgence. Step your vacation game up by booking at one of the best luxury hotels in Koh Samui , where you’ll find everything from infinity pools to full treatment spas. As well as passing through the island’s friendly beach towns, don’t leave without enjoying a romantic dinner by Bophut Beach before sampling the local Alambic rum in Chaweng, Samui’s nightlife centre. Here you’ll find dazzling ladyboy shows and open-air events on Chaweng Beach. Lamai Beach is another one to explore, known as the island’s best gay beach with waterside restaurants and street food options.

Land of the most magnificent seafood BBQ served at street markets across town, Krabi is the number one choice for both foodies and nature lovers. Often considered the jumping-off point to the southern islands including Koh Lanta and Railay Beach – Thailand’s deep water solo and climbing capital – Krabi is a destination in itself for its world-class street eats and wild surroundings. Kayaking, snorkelling, climbing and scuba diving adventures lie just a short minibus ride away but before branching out, take the time to appreciate the authenticity and unkempt beauty of Krabi’s limestone karsts, white-sand beaches and dense rainforest, spending time in slow-moving fishing villages and boating through the province’s arcane mangrove forests.

With just enough development for convenience, Krabi retains its tranquil charm by leaving the partying to nearby Ao Nang and Phi Phi. That’s not to say Krabi is without its fair share of nighttime entertainment; indeed, the neighbourhoods of Tonsai Village and Loh Dalum are packed with bars, pubs and clubs, all boasting a fresh, non-sleazy vibe. Depending on what you fancy, opt for live reggae nights in Krabi’s hippie dive bars or swig alcohol from a bucket at Center Point in Ao Nang.

7. Chiang Mai

The beating heart of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a veritable utopia for ex-pats, packed with things to do without battling the chaos of the capital. Easily walkable within the tourist centre (Old City), Chiang Mai is one for comfort and convenience. While away your days alternating between spas and street-side eateries, staying hydrating on steaming bowls of Kao Soi (coconut curry noodle soup) and fresh coconut smoothies. The largest city in Northern Thailand bordered by misty mountains, Chiang Mai has all you could ever want. Rent a motorbike or book a minivan to explore the rural regions to the northwest, stopping in Mae Hong Son on the Myanmar border for Western hippie enclaves, waterfalls and authentic tribal villages.

Marvel at the scenery on the journey back to the Old City where a very different cultural experience awaits. Much like Bangkok, Chiang Mai caters to all kinks with its array of go-go bars, cabarets, saunas and street events around Thapae Gate and the Night Bazaar area. Save your good clobber for an evening out in Nimmanhaeminda, where upmarket restaurants, bars and coffee shops line the streets beside a multitude of new boutique hotels. Gay Chiang Mai used to be centred on Santitham and Chang Puek, but today the freshest offerings lie along Gay Soi 6 (Soi 6 Charoen Prathet Road), with a smattering of gay karaoke bars, saunas and massage shops remaining in Santitham.

8. Koh Lipe

The remoteness of Koh Lipe – accessible only via Hat Yai airport and Pak Bara speedboat port on the border to Malaysia – is its saving grace, allowing it to dodge the development and over-tourism of the neighbouring islands. We can also thank its inconvenience for allowing the preservation of local ecosystems and healthy coral within Tarutao National Marine Park. On land, Koh Lipe impresses with a nice selection of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels which overlook fine white sand beaches stretching the 3.5-kilometre length of the island. Stay for a romantic beach break interspersed with some of the country’s best scuba diving opportunities before getting swept up in the close-knit yet lively local nightlife.

Named after the turtles that inhabit the region’s clear waters, Koh Tao is certainly a great place to nest, served as it is by impeccable cliff-cradled beaches and everyday sunshine. Located close to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Koh Tao brings a breath of fresh air to the Gulf of Thailand with its bohemian charm and serene natural beauty.

Known for its large number of affordable diving schools, snorkelling sites and dazzling marine life, Koh Tao is a great place to recuperate and learn something new in nature. Lapped by calm waters and affording the best sundown views is Sairee Beach where you can rent a kayak and paddle to Koh Nang Yuan. Chalok Baan Kao Beach is another favourite but venturing off the set path will bring you to the island’s most serene unnamed beach spots, served by a guesthouse or two and caches of untouched coral. Thanks to the island’s regular influx of gay visitors, you’ll be in good company when the evening beckons, particularly in the area around Sairee Beach where most clubs and bars are located.

10. Koh Phangan

Although the above destinations know how to have a good time, Koh Phangan deserves the accolade of the ultimate party island. Home of the infamous monthly Full Moon Party which attract thousands to the region, Koh Phangan goes by its own seasons, with crowds peaking each lunar month. Outside of the full moon, Koh Phangan rests in style, its beaches – notably Bottle Beach, Haad Yao Beach and Salad Beach – catering to a strong gay crowd looking for chilled out fun. The island’s small number of gay bars lie beachside, with more nightlife and gay-friendly offerings in the main town of Thong Sala. If low-key festivity is more your style, the town provides live music events, hippie gatherings and half-moon jungle parties throughout the season. On full moon, however, most will head straight to Haad Rin Beach where neon-clad travellers from across the globe bond over a shared love for DJ-led dance music, fire-wielding circus tricks and all-out hedonism. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Thailand – gay oasis in Asia

Thailand – one of the most wonderful and enigmatic country at South-East Asia. Until 1932, the country bore a name "Siam". The old name, Siam, is still often used in literature, media, Internet and everyday life as a synonym for Thailand. In addition, Siam is often called the "land of smiles," and this metaphor for the Thais is not accidental - they can smile in 13 ways.

Every year thousands gay tourists visit that paradise. Gay travelling is developed in Thailand thus much so many who have visited here back in the Land of Smiles again and again. Trip in the gay Thailand may turn into the most exciting adventure of your life.

Thailand's economy

National currency is Thai Baht. Baht can be exchanged into US dollars, euro and other currencies  (most of South East Asian countries, British pound, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan and etc.) directly at financial organizations inside country. There are a lot of currency exchangers, especially in major tourist centers (Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and others). Also, there are plenty ATM serve the main types of bank cards (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro and others).

The basis of the Thai economy is agriculture industry which provides 10% of GDP and employs half of the country population. There is a misconception that tourism is the mainstay of the economy. But it’s not: the tourist industry approximate occupies only the fifth-sixth place for attraction of budget revenues.

State and Society

Thailand's state system is a constitutional monarchy. But the king, according to the Constitution, has no political power. However Thai people are very fond and respect their king and at most critical moments the last decision taken by the king. A Head of the Thai Government is Prime Minister who must be elected after democratic elections. But the present  Prime Minister has come after a military coup in 2014.

Basis of Thai society is social estates. Religion, traditions and customs are extremely important in the life of Thai people.

Travelling in Thailand

Choosing Siam as the country to travel you can always rely on excellent and cognitive rest. All opportunities for that are established long ago there. It's not surprising that Thailand in 2018 was visited by 38 million foreign tourists.

For lovers of history and culture we recommend Bangkok, Ayutthaya (an ancient capital of Siam) and the northern cities – Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Sukhothai. For lovers of sea and beaches – Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Chang, Krabi coast. For "party" people approach the capital, Phuket and Pattaya. For lovers of asian exotics you can choose any destination in the country.

Thailand is very easy for travelling. You can explore country with any kind of transportation. Lot of airlines work here so tourist can take a plane to many thai cities and countries. Recently in Thailand has opened a several low-cost airlines that make trip very affordable. Finally, hundreds of bus routes open up to any place in the country of smiles.

Gay life in Thailand

Perhaps there is no other country like Thailand where LGBT people are full members of society, not only by the Constitution, but also in fact. Each homosexual in Thailand can position themselves openly and thus to feel a full-fledged citizen. Usually gays and lesbians  don't conceal their true sexuality from parents, neighbors, co-workers. Boys and girls build up same-sex couples and never tell bullshit tales how they rent an apartment with a friend in order to save money. But it's rare to find outside two happy guys who are going take the hands, hug or kiss each others. 

What is the reason for such a peaceful neighborhood LGBT and other people in Thailand? After all, Thailand may not be called so progressive for LGBT rights country like Sweden, the Netherlands or Norway. Based on our observations, we found at least an explanation for that phenomenon.

It‘s a traditional Thai tolerance. The centuries-old tradition of the country, based on Buddhist precepts, has assisted to the fact that Thais relate to others with understanding and acceptance. Differently from other religions, Buddhism teaches people to respect a way of whom the next person is. Such peculiarity of Buddhism has manifested most fully in Thailand. Indeed, the main religion of China or Burma is Buddhism also, however, noone confirms society loyalty to gay-community in these countries.

The society doesn’t put a curse mark on homosexuality. Teenager realizing his sexuality perceives himself as a normal person and accept who he is. In the end, the Thai person naturally comes to that moment when he can say openly to himself and others: "I'm gay!"

Thai gay community features

Everyone who has visited Thailand not just once saw transvestites calmly walking on the streets or the guys who openly show them sexuality. Especially, that usually seen in the large tourist centers (Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket). It seems that things are quite normal here, and gay people feel comfortable and free. But is it really true? 

Having lived here completely for a while, we have understood that it's not so easy at all. Difficulties regard to the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Its are absent practically. A level acceptance of homosexual by society is directly opposite to gay basic legal rights. Homosexuality, of course, is not considered as a criminal offence, but gay rights haven’t got a subsequent development. For example,  transgenders are not able to change them gender de jure.

Gay travel in Thailand

Land of Smiles has been the premier gay destination in Southeast Asia for many years. It offers you a huge selection of hotels, guesthouses and resorts to choose from. Great restaurants, cafes, hotels, saunas, spas and shopping await you, and nothing is better than a relaxing Thai massage after a day of touring the many exotic temples and shopping centers.

Queer culture in the Land of Smiles is developed in several cities, which are main tourist centers at the same time. Certainly, the main gay center Thailand is capital city, Bangkok . In Bangkok, there are several gay areas where gay night clubs, massage salons, restaurants, pubs and go-go bars are focused. The world-famous gay sauna Babylon and nightclub DJ Station located at Bangkok's Silom gay area.

Less stormy blue life rages in Pattaya  city which is in two hours drive from Bangkok. Many years Pattaya occupies the first place in a rating "The best sex resort destination in the world". Probably, Pattaya should be proclaimed as the best gay resort destination as well? Time will show.

Entire gay areas were formed In Pattaya where about a hundred spots are concentrated.And Pattaya has a gay beach, where is possible not only to sunbathe but also to find ton of interesting for guys. The world-famous Tiffany-show and Alcazar show are in Pattaya as well.

The second largest city in Thailand is Chiang Mai. It's located on the north of Thailand. People on the Thai North are especially kind and sympathetic. Besides, the city is surrounded by tremendous beautiful mountains. The most romantic date in your life, probably, happens in this city. Chiang Mai is undoubtedly worthy to be included in the gay travel.

In Thailand there are two large islands gay vacation where you can find your personnal paradise. Of course, we are talking about Phukets and Samui. Tourist infrastructure of islands is getting better by years: new first class and gay friendly hotels and entertainment complexes are appeared. There are even a peculiar gay area Patong and an regular gay-pride in Phuket .

Located in the area of Jomtien Beach, only 2km south of Pattaya city, Jomtien Complex is easily accessible from Pattaya and Bangkok. If you in Pattaya, you can get to Jomtien Complex on the main Baht Bus route for only 10 Baht. If you are in Bangkok, specifically Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) there is a bus directly to Jomtien Bus Station which is only 200 meters away. An LGBTQ Travel Guide to Bangkok

The Land of Smiles directs a most welcoming grin towards LGBTQ visitors and residents alike, and Bangkok , also known as the City of Angels, with a population of approximately 12 million, is one of Asia's most essential, exciting, and rapidly evolving metropolises. The city became host to the first official Asia-set spin-off of RuPaul's Drag Race, " Drag Race Thailand ," which has launched numerous queens' international careers in its two seasons (so far!) including its English-speaking, UCLA-educated half-Taiwanese Bangkok-based co-host, Pangina Heals . Transgender identity is also a thread woven into the society's fabric, with celebrities including pop music stars Gene Kasidit and Belle Nuntita , model Kulchaya "Candy" Tansiri, and filmmaker turned MP ( she was elected to the House of Parliament in May 2019 ), Tanwarin "Golf" Sukkhapisit, who is determined to follow Taiwan in bringing legal marriage equality to Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)'s English language Go Thai Be Free website and campaign is rich with information and resources, including dedicated sections for its major cities and islands, including, of course, Bangkok .

April's Songkran, Thailand's New Year celebration, sees the entire city turn into a jubilant, water-drenched playground, with plenty of queer folks getting in on the action. During this time, Bangkok also hosts the annual gCircuit , a four-day series of jam-packed LGBTQ dances and events, including pool parties for bears, muscle boys, and everyone in between, with an impressive line-up of both global and local DJs. And the city's famed Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 strips remain buzzing LGBTQ nightlife (and all-male massage joint) meccas with their bevy of bars, nightclubs, and drag cabarets.

Bangkok is also home to a significant and visible lesbian population, including the masculine-appearing "toms" (short for tomboys). Women can also get their groove on at the monthly LESLA lesbian party.

The Best Things To Do

There's no better way to get a true sense of place in Bangkok than a cruise along the Chao Phraya River, lined on either side by iconic structures and temples (and luxury hotels!). The gay-owned 40-seat Supanniga Cruise ship is one of the classiest ways to take in the sights and atmosphere and offers a daily choice of a cocktail and champagne cruise (with an optional "afternoon tea" style set) or a full six-course sunset dinner excursion that includes a glass of bubbly and authentic Thai dishes. You're sure to spot both Thai and farang LGBTQ couples enjoying the romance, food, cocktails, and sights, and it's a welcome alternative to the gaudy disco-blasting, buffet-serving vessels that overtake the river after sundown.

Opened in late 2018, IconSIAM is the Chao Phraya's newest addition and the first major, glittery, top-end shopping center on the other side of the river. Home to Bangkok's first Apple store and a ground-level food court, Sook Siam, the shopping center also boasts a mix of major international prestige brands and local artisanal goods alike, including aromatherapy and spa brand Thaan. There are also dozens of restaurants, including the casual, fun, and delicious Thai-Italian fusion restaurant Greyhound Cafe (a big favorite of local and visiting Asian LGBTQ folks, from bears to Toms to drag queens!). Greyhound has multiple locations around the city and is a must.

One of Bangkok's most underrated attractions is its Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA Bangkok . Although outside the city center and requiring a taxi or Uber ride to access, its five floors are dedicated to the stunning breadth of Thailand's contemporary artists—quite a few being LGBTQ—and their work. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Art & Culture Center , located right off the BTS Skytrain and just next to major shopping centers MBK and Siam Discovery, recently hosted Asia's largest art exhibition of regional LGBTQ work to date, " Spectrosynthesis II — Exposure of Tolerance: LGBTQ in Southeast Asia." Resembling New York's Guggenheim inside with its spiral-like architecture, the building is also home to cool local shops and cafes.

The entire sixth floor of shopping center Central Embassy is home to the incredible gay-owned Open House Bookshop by Hardcover , a photogenic, beautifully designed series of shelves packed with mostly art-themed tomes and goods surrounding a fabulous variety of cafes and restaurant outlets as well.

More than just a gay bathhouse, Babylon is an internationally beloved, well maintained gay men's Bangkok institution with sauna facilities, a swimming pool, gym, and full-service spa pampering services. It's frequented by both locals and visitors alike. Also popular, the creative and hipster Ari district's Chakran celebrates its 21st anniversary in 2020, while 39 Underground , just one BTS stop north in nearby Saphan Khwai, draws an almost exclusively local Thai crowd.

Bangkok is also home to a family-friendly, excellent Japanese-style onsen facility, Yunomori . It's a perfect day and night indulgence, with full massage treatments, food (the beer with a sweet ginger shot is delicious), and wet areas (nude and gender-segregated).

While the term "ladyboy" has finally been tossed in the rubbish, one can still see Thailand's talented transgender women perform in a cabaret performance at Calypso .

The Best LGBTQ Bars and Clubs in Bangkok

Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 continue to be hotspots for Bangkok's for LGBTQ nightlife and are extremely friendly to travelers. Sadly, local rumors have it that these iconic strips may be redeveloped entirely in the coming years, so enjoy while you can!

Check out "Thailand Drag Race" stars in action at Soi 4's The Stranger bar, including Jaja, Angele Anang, and the show's English-speaking, wickedly funny co-host Pangina Heals, also known as Pan Pan Nakprasert, who helped popularize the queer dance style, waacking, in Southeast Asia.

See and be seen (with a beverage and even some grub of course) at an outdoor table at Soi 4's 30-plus-year-old Telephone Pub or neighbors The Balcony , Connections , and G's . Just up a flight of stairs, the three-year-old HUGs caters to bears, cubs, and their friends.

For elaborate drag production numbers (replete with choreography and back-up dancers) and dancefloor action, head to Soi 2's long-running, multi-level DJ Station , neighboring Disco Disco , and G (formerly known as G.O.D.).

Although the upscale, chic Maggie Choo's discontinued its weekly gay night in early 2020, promoter Ken Kreangsak Lieng continues to throw new, exciting gay parties and events throughout Bangkok via his G-Spot Entertainment .

If you're wanting a lower-key spot with stunning design, craft cocktails, and mixed crowd, check out the Iron Balls Gin Parlour & Saloon , serving locally distilled Iron Balls Gin, the trendy Thonglor district speakeasy J. Boroski (no menus: just cite your favorite spirit and flavors and they'll whip up something with seasonal market fruits and herbs), and Silom's Vesper .

The Best Places to Eat

Openly gay Thai restauranteur Thanaruek Laoraowirodge, known as Khun Eh, is behind Somtum Der , a buzzy, cute, casual, and affordable Isan-style restaurant near the Silom nightlife—you might even spot a few LGBTQ Thai celebs here! Since 2011, he has since expanded the brand to New York (where it received a Michelin star), Vietnam, and Japan, and other locations across Bangkok. Sister venue Supanniga Eating Room , with locations in Sathorn, Thonglor, and Charoen Krung, takes its menu from his grandmother's Eastern Thai culinary repertoire.

Also a gay-owned favorite, 22-year-old Silom restaurant Eat Me is a consistent presence on culinary "Best Of" lists, thanks to both to New York ex-pat chef Tim Butler's inventive, upscale fusion cuisine (there's a vegan menu as well!), fresh contemporary vibe, and edgy art exhibitions. Local LGBTQ foodies also magnet to locavore and organic-centric (and very LGBTQ-inclusive in both the kitchen and front of house) upscale venues Le Du , Bo.Lan , 80/20 , and one of the hardest tables to snag in Thailand, Sorn . Awarded two Michelin stars in 2020 and included on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list, Sorn is situated in a gorgeously renovated mansion and presents some of the most upscale, time-consuming, utterly delicious preparations of Southern Thai cuisine you'll find in the world.

Where to Stay

The Sathorn district's 403-room W Bangkok is as chic, clubby, and modern (and yes, LGBTQ!) as one expects from the fashion-loving brand, and conveniently located just near the BTS. Its swimming pool is just begging for social media photos, and the AWAY spa a fab way to pamper away the afternoon.

Located just off Lumphini Park and steps from Silom, The SO/Bangkok , formerly the Sofitel So, offers 237 rooms in four different element-themed designs (water, wood, earth, metal). All are fantastic, while savoring a cocktail at either the outdoor Water Club swimming pool or rooftop HI-SO bar are musts... with a park view!

In Thai, the word “hong” means room, and that’s exactly what you’ll find, a naturally formed room of magnificent size.This is a beautiful spot between the sheer cliffs where we will still overnight all alone, or we can do dinner in the nearby beach resort.

Day 6 - Ko Pan Yi Ko Pan Yi . This is a famous fishing village built above the water next to the Island. It is a very attractive village and night we will have dinner in one of the local fish restaurants.

Day 7 - Phuket Yacht Haven Marina Phuket Yacht Haven Marina . Today we have to sail back to the reality and return to the Marina. But you can always come back and book another cruise!

Thailand Moves Closer to Gay Marriage

Thailand's lower house parliament approved a bill to legalize marriage equality, bringing policy in line with public opinion..

Thailand is one step closer to legalizing marriage equality after lawmakers in the country’s lower house of parliament voted to approve a bill permitting same-sex couples to wed.

The bill overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 400-10 in its final reading on March 27.

It now heads to the country’s Senate, where it must be approved, before finally having Thailand’s king sign off on the policy change. The law could be enacted as soon as 120 days after the king’s assent, reports Al Jazeera .

If the bill surmounts those obstacles, Thailand would become the third Asian country to legalize same-sex nuptials, following Taiwan and Nepal.

The bill changes references in current law from gender-specific terms like “man,” “woman,” husband,” and “wife” to gender-neutral terms. It grants surviving partners inheritance rights in the case of one partner’s death and allows same-sex couples the right to adopt.

“I want to invite you all to make history,” Danuphorn Punnakanta, the chairman of the parliamentary committee, said ahead of the vote. “We did this for all Thai people to reduce disparity in society and start creating equality.”

While Thailand is generally considered welcoming to the international LGBTQ community, activists historically have had little success convincing lawmakers to support the effort.

Despite some public polls showing near-universal support for same-sex marriage among the population, the fate of same-sex marriage remained uncertain after the progressive-leaning Move Forward party, which won the most seats in parliament in the 2023 election cycle, failed to negotiate a power-sharing agreement that would give it control of the legislative branch.

Instead, the center-right Pheu Thai party struck a power-sharing agreement with conservative and military-aligned political parties, putting a conservative-leaning government in charge.

However, Pheu Thai leaders had also promised to consider a marriage equality bill, and delivered on that promise in recent months, reports CNN .

In 2020, the country’s Constitutional Court ruled that current laws only recognizing heterosexual marriage are unconstitutional. It also recommended that lawmakers pass legislation to recognize and protect the rights of sexual and gender minorities.

In December, the lower house of parliament approved the first readings of four different draft bills to legalize same-sex marriage, and directed a legislative committee to consolidate them into a single bill.

Nada Chaiyajit, a law lecturer at Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai, celebrated parliament’s passage of the bill, telling The New York Times,  “This is the greatest victory. … This is not only about LGBTIQ, this is about everyone. Equality.”

Don Lemon, the gay former host of "CNN This Morning," has reached a settlement with the network after he was unceremoniously removed from his position following controversial on-air comments.

According to  TheWrap , the 57-year-old Lemon has agreed to a separation deal for approximately $24.5 million, the equivalent he would have earned for serving out the remainder of his final contract, which was set to expire three-and-a-half years after he was pulled from the airwaves.

In April 2023, Lemon, who was featured on Metro Weekly's cover   in 2016, announced on X that he had learned from his agent -- and not from the network, for which he had worked for 17 years -- that he had been terminated.

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon announced that his new digital show on X was canceled following his interview with the app's owner, Elon Musk, as part of the show's inaugural episode.

The Don Lemon Show was set to start streaming on Monday, March 18, on the social media platform. Lemon said that he believed he had a good interaction with Musk, who apparently did not take kindly to the interview.

"We had a good conversation," Lemon wrote in a statement. "Clearly he felt differently. His commitment to a global town square where all questions can be asked and all ideas can be shared seems not to include questions of him from people like me."

No more monkey business: Thai city’s macaques to be put in enclosures

Primates are symbol of Lopburi but residents have had enough as monkeys resort to violence to get food

M ischievous long-tailed macaques are, for many, a symbol of the Thai city of Lopburi. Tourists flock to the city’s ancient temple to feed the macaques fresh fruit and photograph them as they maraud the streets. But, increasingly, residents say they have had enough.

This week, after growing complaints from residents, wildlife officials announced a plan to round up 2,500 of the urban monkeys and place them in large enclosures. It follows an incident in March where a woman’s knee wasdislocated after she was kicked in the back by a monkey that wanted her food. Separately, a man lost control of his motorcycle after a monkey tried to grab a bag of food from him.

“I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” Athapol Charoenshunsa, the director general of the department of national parks, wildlife and plant conservation, said at a news conference.

Some people have fed the monkeys for generations and feel they are part of the city’s identity. Others say the macaque population has grown too big and that the animals are damaging to businesses and properties and are endangering people’s health.

“People say that if there are no monkeys, then it is not Lopburi,” one resident, Phairoth, told the Thai broadcaster Channel 3. “I want people who say that to take a monkey into their own house and look after it. Let’s share them, five per house, 10 per house. I’ll help deliver the food to their house as well.”

The monkeys are infamous for ambushing people and businesses in search of snacks. Some food sellers have resorted to carrying slingshots to threaten the animals if they approach. Shops have installed metal grilles and displayed large toy animals – crocodiles or tigers – to deter the intruders. When the Thai prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, visited the city this year, residents tried to hand him a printed frame of an image that had gone viral on social media of a young girl holding a toy gun to warn off monkeys as she walked through the city.

Athapol said he expected the first phase of the catching operation to start within weeks and that the enclosures would be big enough to contain thousands of monkeys. A small number of macaques would be allowed to remain in the city.

Wildlife authorities began rounding up the most aggressive males last week, catching 37 so far. According to Thai media, four gang leaders are among those that were caught. A fifth monkey, known for stealing underwear and necklaces from a shop, is still free.

Rival troops of monkeys occupy different buildings, including a derelict cinema. Monkeys that were caught would be kept in enclosures for their group, authorities said.

“There are people who like monkeys, while others don’t. I think that, compared to 10 years ago, the population of monkeys has increased significantly,” said resident Job Jirapat, adding that she understood both sides.

The authorities have run sterilisation campaigns, and from 2014-23 neutered about 2,600 macaques.

Female monkeys are able to reproduce twice a year, and the abundance of high-sugar treats given over recent decades has meant they have plenty of energy to do so. Last year, the population totalled 5,709.

“If sterilisation can be carried out consistently, it is a good long-term solution,” said Job. “I have a feeling that the government didn’t take it seriously. It is possible that they were not able to continue because of a lack of funding, which is why the number of monkeys is increasing so quickly. Another thing that we should do is stop feeding monkeys.”

Experts have previously called for greater education about what type of food can be given to monkeys, and how and when they should be fed. The province celebrates an annual “monkey buffet” festival, where the monkeys are given huge feasts of fruit and other treats.

Athapol said the phased roundup of monkeys kwould “solve the problem very quickly” but some people are sceptical. “If the officers only capture a few ones or only the mean ones, then, to be honest, it won’t make any difference,” Panya Phaopahol, a noodle seller, told Channel 7 TV.

Job said that while monkeys may be a symbol of the city, having fewer around would improve people’s quality of life and keep the city cleaner. “And I think Lopburi has more to offer than just monkeys.”
