With a full belly, you can explore the colourful neighbourhood of Kuzguncuk in Üsküdar. Once settled by Jews, then Greek-Orthodox and Armenian Christians and currently Muslims, this area of leafy lanes filled with brightly coloured traditional houses is a sight to behold. Stop in one of the many cafes for a cool drink before continuing your stroll through the peaceful, pretty streets.

If you’re in town on a Tuesday then you can’t miss the spectacle of the Kadıköy Tuesday Market, where you’ll find everything you need and more. A far cry from the ostentation of the Grand Bazaar, this is where the locals come for their weekly shop.

While exploring the east side, stop at The Fighting Bull statue on Altıyol Square and find out about this bronze bovine beast’s chequered past, before heading towards the water to enjoy views across the Sea of Marmara and sip a strong Turkish coffee at Moda Pier.

If you fancy a break from the city, it’s about half an hour’s drive north of Kadıköy centre to Khedive Palace in the Cubuklu area. Built in 1907, it’s not one of the oldest palaces, but its pretty woodland setting offers a serenity not often found in this city of 15m people.

The baklava here shouldn’t be missed.

The area has its fair share of third-wave coffee shops too, including Walter’s Coffee Roastery, based heavily on the Breaking Bad series. Get your cold brew coffee hit, and buy any number of coffee-making kits to make your own. Walter’s sells their own cheerful yellow mugs too.

The five brothers who own Meshur Dondurmacı Ali Usta offer the best dondurma (ice cream), with 40 flavours from which to choose. Don’t forget to ask what toppings they have available. Chocolate and nuts are a classic combo. Make your choice, then take an evening stroll with the locals down Moda Caddesi.

For a taste of the local nightlife, join the youths on Kadife Sokak, also known as Bar Street for good reason. It’s always crowded here and has a jubilant atmosphere, especially on warm summer evenings. Grab a beer from any of the bars and kiosks along the street and soak up the buoyant Turkish atmosphere.

2. Taste of Turkey on Two Continents: From European Istanbul to Asian Kadikoy

If the tapestry of edible delights on offer on the Asian side of Istanbul is a little overwhelming, allow an expert foodie be your guide as you get a taste for this vibrant part of town. You’ll start with a Turkish breakfast on the European side, before devouring a full ten tastings on the Asian side, including baklava, kebab and mussels – expect to have your cultural curiosity satisfied as well as your appetite.

Shopping on the Asian side of Istanbul

The European side may have the super cosmopolitan Istiklal Caddesi, but the Asian side puts up a glamorous fight with the Istanbulite Champs-Élysées, Baıdat Caddesi. Used for trade and military purposes during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, today you’ll find elegant shops, high-end fashion boutiques, large shopping malls and luxury car showrooms here.

In sharp contrast, you could while away a few hours down Kadıköy’s Tellalzade Street, known as Antique Street, due to the array of shops selling vintage record players, lanterns, telescopes and other jumbled oddities. Further on is the Kadıköy Antiques Bazaar, for a finer selection of antiques.

How to reach the Asian side of Istanbul

The best way to arrive in Asia is by boat. There are regular ferries running from Eminönü Ferry Terminal on the west side of the Bosphorus to Kadıköy. Alternatively, take a 20-30 minute taxi from the Sultanahmet area and they’ll drop you in Kadıköy. The tram/bus combo takes a little longer, as you’d need to take the T1 tram from Sultanahmet to Kabatas, then take the 129T bus from Istanbul Beyoglu Teknik Üniversite to Kadıköy, which takes 90 minutes in total.

Old Istanbul

New Rome, Byzantium, Constantinople… finally Istanbul. The capital of the Eastern Roman Empire has had many names over the centuries. Situated strategically on both sides of the Bosphorus Strait, once the last leg of the famous Silk Road, it reaped unimaginable benefits from controlling trade between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Defended by the sea on one side and the Bay of the Golden Horn on the other, it was surrounded by an additional 40 kilometre long wall – all that making the city an impregnable fortress! No wonder, then, that after the fall of Rome in 476, it became the de facto capital of European civilization, continuing occupying this position until 1453, until Constantinople was finally captured by the Turks. For some, this marked its downfall, while for others it marked the beginning of a golden era. The city remained invincible, it was still a vibrant metropolis where Latin no longer mixed only with Greek, but now also Turkish, Arabic, Yiddish and Ladino. As the capital of the Ottoman Empire, it was thriving, growing larger and more powerful than ever before. Istanbul is rightly called the gateway to Europe… or to Asia, as it is the only metropolis lying on two continents and combines Eastern and Western influences like no other place on earth. And like a lens, it focuses and combines the history of both East and West. 

Our tour will begin in Sultanahmet, the historic centre of the former Greek polis that used to function here. It was here in the majestic Hippodrome that gladiatorial battles and bloody horse races, beloved by the Byzantine emperors, took place. Today on the site of it there is a square with the war trophies of the Roman emperors – old obelisks and the famous Serpentine Column. Right next to it, in a place where the imperial palace once stood, stands the pride and most important building of the Ottoman Empire, the Blue Mosque, the first mosque in the world built with as many as 6 minarets! The construction of this magnificent structure was intended, among other things, to overshadow a building standing opposite, the almost 1,000 years older Christian Temple of Divine Wisdom – Hagia Sophia. After leaving the strict centre, we’ll delve into the narrow streets of the Grand Bazaar, a mediaeval hypermarket, where you can buy almost everything from cashmere shawls, sweet baklava to aromatic herbs and spices. We’ll sink into the hustle and bustle of Turkish culture, so steeped in traditions of commerce, joie de vivre and hospitality – we’ll also be treated to some Turkish delicacies ourselves….

During this 2.5 hour tour you will learn about Istanbul’s history, Turkish culture and have a chance to taste some Turkish delicacies. Among other things, we will see:

Separated from Europe by the mighty Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul’s Asian side often feels like its own distinct city. Away from the bustle of the tourism center, life revolves around weekly markets, cozy neighborhoods, and local traditions. On this Istanbul Asian Side Tour, a professional local tour guide with local knowledge of the area will guide you through the back streets of the hidden city.

We meet in Eminönü and  take the local ferry to Kadıköy, on the Asian side of Istanbul.  Ferries are commonly used by the locals as it allows you to wake up and prepare for a busy day, or relax and unwind on the way back home.  You can also enjoy the magnificent view on the skyline of the old city with its world famous icons, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia Museum and Topkapi Palace.

Kadıköy is one of the liveliest neighbourhood of Istanbul after Istiklal Caddesi (Street) in Taksim, Europian side of Istanbul. It is a well worth visiting neighbourhood with its nice cafes, restaurants, fresh fish and fruit markets, shops and antique stores. There is an Opera House from 1920s in Bahariye Caddesi, one of the most modern shopping promenades of Istanbul. While you are strolling along these lively streets, you will also see some of the Armenian and Greek Churches. Moda is a peaceful place to give a break and taste the home-made Turkish ice-cream.

Üskudar is a concervative neighbourhood of the Asian side, totally different than modern Kadıkoy. There are historical mosques from Ottoman period. We visit the one built for Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Local Market of Uskudar is right at the heart of the square where they sell, fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, dried fruits and nuts, Turkish Delight and more.

The walk between Uskudar and multiethnic  fishing village Kuzguncuk is on the shore and among the parks where people enjoy the sea breeze and amateur fishing. Kuzguncuk is off the beaten path of the Asian side and has a minority history of Greeks, Jews and Armenians.

We take the local ferry back to the European side. Our Asian side Istanbul tour ends.

Loved this tour. I went to another free tour before this one but it wasn't as informative and interesting. History & “Modern” tour

If you have the time, I recommend checking out both the more “typical”, historical tour, which is a great way to get your bearings and get acclimated, and then the tour that takes you across the bridge (Europe side) and to the Asian side for more of a modern, political, and food tour. The tour guides are local and knowledgeable, and are very open and candid with the answers to questions of all varieties. What I liked about the historical tour, is that you got a good overview, but it didn’t waste time going INTO the standard sites, which you can easily do on your own. For the modern tour, we were taken “off the beaten path”, and shown some hidden gems, as well as left with a list of food spots to check out. Do either (or both!) of these tours ... you won’t regret it!

Best Walking Tour in Istanbul We visited Istanbul for 4 days, a week ago. We always combined a walking tour with local guide for few hours than walking by our-self to explore our interest. We pick an 4 hours free tour with that company (10 Euro tip) and we enjoy it so much that we reserved a second tour, to other part of this amazing city, a day after, and of course we enjoy the second tour as well. We went trough a lot of historical as beautiful places and our guide was very knowledgeable with historical information.We decided to return to Istanbul the coming months and to pick that company again.
