chelsea flower show the gardens of england

Our tour starts this afternoon with a walk down Sloane Street for ‘Chelsea in Bloom’. Meet up with your Ross Tour Leader, Robin Powell, in the hotel foyer. Shops and squares are decorated with fresh flower displays. It’s an exciting prelude to opening day tomorrow of the Chelsea Flower Show. Pre-dinner drinks this evening in our hotel will allow us to get acquainted and Robin will give an introduction to our tour; followed by our Welcome Dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Royal Garden Hotel , Kensington

Special members tickets for Opening Day at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show. Enjoy multimillion-dollar show gardens and the smaller artisan gardens. Browse flower exhibits in the Great Pavilion and treat yourself in the shopping avenue! Late afternoon transfer to your hotel. Evening free.

The home and garden of Winston and Clementine Churchill for 40 years, Chartwell is our destination this morning. In its extraordinary setting, overlooking the Weald of Kent, Chartwell is now in the expert hands of the National Trust. Terraced gardens laid out by the Churchills overlook the lake and Walled Garden, built by Sir Winston himself. Walk through the walled garden, cut flower, vegetable and rose gardens, orchard, Butterfly Walk, Marlborough Terrace for a glimpse into the life and times of the Churchill family. The House itself is included in our visit; interiors remain much as they were when Churchill lived here, intimate and well preserved. After lunch travel to nearby Hever Castle that dates back 700 years, with a magnificent suite of gardens. Marshland was drained and gardens were made in 1904 when William Waldorf Astor set about restoring the castle to its former glory. Travel back to Tunbridge Wells.

The Spa Hotel , Royal Tunbridge Wells

Garden set within 81ha (200 acres) of woodland and parkland in Haywards Heath, West Sussex with magnificent views across the Ouse Valley viaduct. The garden has distinct ‘rooms’, each with its own unique style and character. Subtropical Round Dell, the Rose Garden, Italian Garden and Paradise Walk. Lunch included today.

Two influential gardens today! Sissinghurst, loved for its balance and harmony, garden rooms and inspired planting combinations; the result of the partnership between Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson. Cimb the tower for a fabulous view, and peep into Vita’s writing room. Explore each compartment of the garden, walk down to the Moat, herb garden and through to the new Delos Garden, a landscape of ruined stone fragments and Mediterranean plants, inspired by their visits to the Greek island. This garden has been re-created by Dan Pearson and opened in 2021 . Travel on to Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter, overwhelming and boisterous, and densely packed with plants. Now under the carefull stewardship of Fergus Garrett, who will give us his guided tour. Travel on to Tunbridge Wells, historic Spa town in Kent. Check in to Spa Hotel for the next four nights. Dinner is included this evening.

Travel into Sussex today to Nymans, originally the home of Ludwig Messel who bought the Estate in the Sussex High Weald in the 1890 to make a dream family home. Inspired by the magnificent wooded surroundings, he created a garden with plants collected from around the world. The house was partially destroyed by fire in 1947. The enclosed ruined Gothic styled Great Hall has recently been transformed into a small garden that includes many plants introduced to western horticulture by the Messel family and their gardeners, all grown in giant planters and pots. Lunch is included at Nymans before we travel back to Tunbridge Wells. Free afternoon.

We are heading to Winchester today with a visit to Wakehurst, the wild botanic garden managed by Kew Gardens. It’s home to the Millenium Seed Bank, the world’s largest store of seeds from wild plant species. In this ancient and beautiful landscape in the Sussex High Weald this diverse collection of plants from Britain and around the globe thrives within a tapestry of gardens, woodlands, meadows and wetlands. Knepp Estate is next, a brand new “rewilding” project. Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell have brought a failing farm back from financial ruin and in the process created habitat for wildlife. It’s a biodiverse Wilderness Area in the Low Weald of Sussex, one of the most exciting wildlife conservation projects in the UK, and indeed in Europe, bringing back nature; hope for the future. Beautiful and inspiring! Travel on through Sussex and Surrey into Hampshire to our hotel in Winchester for the next four nights.

The Winchester Hotel & Spa , Winchester

We are travelling into the picturesque South Downs today to Uppark, built in 1690 with gardens designed by Humphrey Repton. First is a guided tour of the gardens, then lunch in the old Orangery. Afternoon tour through the State rooms of the house, filled with treasures. On our way back to Winchester we will stop at the ancient market town of Petersfield.

Mottisfont is highly regarded as one of the world’s finest rose gardens. The walled garden is home to the National Collection of pre-1900 old garden roses, which reach their peak in early summer. Lunch inlcuded today. These roses tend to flower just once a year, an extraordinary sight. Created by emminent rosarian, Graham Stuart Thomas in 1970, who selected old varieties that may otherwise have become extinct. Travel back to Winchester with the afternoon free. Option to attend Evensong in the exquisite Winchester Cathedral this evening.

Meet head Gardener, Matt Reese this morning at Malverleys, a private garden that has captured world interest and acclaim, thanks to his skill and dedication. Exquisite long borders, abundant Terrace Garden, shady Stumpery and prolific flower meadow; it’s a triumph! Travel on to Richmond and our Petersham Hotel.

Petersham Hotel , Richmond

Wisley, showpiece of the RHS with an impressive suite of gardens. Glasshouse with gardens designed by Tom Stuart-Smith and Piet Oudolf’s new perennial borders. The afternoon is free to either relax or go exploring in Richmond. Farewell dinner to share highlights and bid farewell as we head home or travel further.

Our tour ends at breakfast this morning. Check out of the hotel at your own convenience.

Testimonial

Thank you for the lovely experience you put together for all of us. The gardens were beautiful and so lush! As much as I enjoyed seeing the gardens in all of their glory, I really loved the opportunity to see so much of the glorious English countryside with the very able skills of our coach driver. He was a delight and terrific! Those verdant, rolling hills dotted with sheep will bring back happy memories for a long time to come.

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1, Monday, May 20 -- Arrival

  • Tour members independently arrange travel to Heathrow Airport, walk to the Hilton London Heathrow Airport hotel just outside Terminal 4, and check into the room booked for them (included in the tour price).
  • We'll gather in a hotel restaurant at 6:30 PM for a Welcome Dinner (included).

Day 2, Tuesday, May 21 -- Garden Museum & Chelsea Flower Show

  • We begin our week at the Garden Museum in the middle of London, where we’ll have lunch in a private room in the museum’s cafe (included). The museum is all about British gardens and gardening, with temporary exhibits and displays from its permanent collection. There is also a new garden, a glass-enclosed courtyard filled with unusual plants. Dan Pearson, the garden designer, calls the space a “Wardian case full of beautiful treasures.”
  • In the afternoon, we travel to the Chelsea Flower Show . Each year, this garden event attracts gardeners and designers from every corner of the globe. The show consistently celebrates design excellence with its Best in Show, Best Fresh Garden, and Best Artisan Garden competitions. The Great Pavilion, where nurseries and plant societies exhibit the best and newest in international horticulture, is not to be missed. We’ll be tired but inspired by the time we leave, having explored what many call the best garden show in the world.

Day 3, Wednesday, May 22 -- Sissnghurst & Great Dixter

  • Today, we start at the iconic Sissinghurst Castle Gardens . These treasured gardens result from the commitment and imagination of writer Vita Sackville-West and her diplomat husband, Harold Nicolson . In the 1930s, he planned the gardens’ architecture, and she filled it with lush, romantic plantings. Besides exploring the series of famous garden rooms, make sure you climb the tower and take in the panoramic views from the top. From this vantage point, it’s easy to see why thousands of garden lovers consider a pilgrimage to Sissinghurst an absolute must. We’ll have lunch (individually) at Sissinghurst’s Granary Restaurant (not included) before traveling to our afternoon garden.
  • This afternoon, we visit Great Dixter , perhaps the best-known and most loved of all English gardens. It exists as a living testament to the late owner, plantsman, and writer Christopher Lloyd’s life and passions. Head gardener Fergus Garrett, who worked for Lloyd during the last years of his life, carries on the tradition of experimentation that Lloyd started. Although this garden’s structure is early 20th century, the spirit of the plantings is most certainly contemporary. Under Garrett’s leadership, the garden is being developed and maintained to such a high level that you are unlikely to find any other garden like it. Great Dixter is a visionary, exuberant plant lover’s haven. Expect to see contemporary planting design at its best.

Day 4, Thursday, May 23 -- Fairlight End & Gravetye Manor

  • Our first garden today is Fairlight End , a relatively new private garden set on land that slopes steeply from the house downward across wildflower meadows to a pond at the bottom. Chris and Robin Hutt , who bought the property in 2004, were baffled by the unwieldy topography and brought in landscape architect Ian Kitson , whose signature gesture is the curve. At Fairlight End, he inserted a single curvaceous corten steel retaining edge to separate the more refined garden close to the house from the wilder areas below. Fairlight End is not the only example we’ll see this week of the current English taste for wild gardens, but it is undoubtedly the most stylish.
  • This afternoon, we travel to Gravetye Manor in Sussex. It’s a country house hotel where we’ll have a special lunch in its Michelin Star restaurant (included) and then stroll the gardens with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Created a century ago by Irish writer, designer, and owner William Robinson , the gardens were used to showcase his ideas about naturalism and wild gardening, contrasting untamed plantings with more structured areas close to the house. Today, the gardens have had an extensive restoration, but don’t expect a historical set piece. After a stint at Great Dixter, Tom Coward is the current head gardener and has boldly added experimental plantings, giving the garden a 21st-century twist.

Day 5, Friday, May 24 -- Folly Farm/Malverleys & Hidcote

  • Our first garden today is Folly Farm, an early 20th-century house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens with a garden by the revered Gertrude Jekyll. One hundred years later, Dan Pearson was asked to make a master plan & update the plantings. The resulting renovation created a magical blending of old and new, and is considered one of England's most beautiful gardens.
  • Lunch today (not included) will be at our afternoon garden, the acclaimed Hidcote Manor Garden . Starting in 1907, Lawrence Johnston, a talented American plantsman with a strong sense of design, created the garden, considered by many to be a masterpiece. A series of hedged, intimate outdoor rooms, each with its individual character, are linked by narrow passageways that eventually lead to lawns and views of the countryside beyond. Throughout, Johnston used a wide variety of plants, many found on his plant collecting trips. It’s noteworthy that Hidcote, with its themed garden rooms, changed how gardens were made in England and still influences garden-makers today.

Day 6, Saturday, May 25 --  Pettifers & Free time

  • This morning, we visit Pettifers , a stylish townhouse garden designed by the owner Gina Price . With little gardening experience, Price started in the early 1990s with a conventional, old-fashioned garden. Gradually, by visiting other gardens and asking for criticism from knowledgeable friends, Price began editing. Today, Pettifers is known for its innovative plant choices, unusual plant pairings, and vivid color combinations, all within a confident structure. Price admits to being influenced by the New Perennials Movement but says she couldn’t have a garden without English prettiness. Pettifers is a garden that’s sure to please.
  • For the afternoon and evening, we take a break from group garden visits to explore Stratford-upon-Avon . The medieval market town is the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Tour members are free to check out the numerous cultural sites connected with Shakespeare, stroll the streets to admire the timber-and-white façaded buildings with thatched roofs, or shop in the many boutiques along the way to pick up a special souvenir. Dinner this evening is at a restaurant of your choice in town or in the hotel (not included). Reservations may be necessary.

Day 7, Sunday, May 26 --  Rousham & Kiftsgate

  • Today, we visit Rousham Garden , designed by William Kent (1685-1748), the landscape designer who popularized a natural landscape style for large estates. Rousham is the only 18th-century garden featured on our tour and is considered by many to be the single best example of a landscape garden in the country. Little has changed over the centuries at Rousham. The views and accents Kent designed are still there for us to enjoy today. Make sure to leave time to check out the walled garden with its long double borders, pigeon house, and kitchen garden.
  • We’ll have lunch at Kiftsgate Court (not included) before delving into its gardens. Kiftsgate exists due to three generations of women in one family who shaped the garden and made it a beloved treasure. The gardens were started in the 1920s by Heather Muir , who boldly employed an intuitive approach to creating gardens instead of using a formalized plan. In the 1950s, Muir’s daughter, Diany Binny , continued the garden’s evolution by introducing a semicircular swimming pool on the lower level, commissioning sculptural features, and opening Kiftsgate for public enjoyment for the first time. Today, Anne Chambers , Binny's daughter and Muir's granddaughter, continues to create the garden. Her new Water Garden is a contemporary oasis and is evidence of her desire to bring the garden into the 21st century.

Day 8, Monday, May 27 -- Wisley

  • This morning, we travel back towards London, stopping at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden , Wisley in Surrey. For more than 100 years, Wisley has been a center of British gardening excellence. Although the garden spreads over 240 acres, we’ll focus on the demonstration gardens, which feature everything from stream gardens to meadows to double borders. In May, plantings of camassia, roses, peonies, rhododendrons, and azaleas are of particular interest. Also not to be missed are the perennial borders near the Glasshouse created by influential designers Tom Stuart-Smith and Piet Oudolf. Lunch will be at a cafe or restaurant of your choice at Wisley (not included).

Day 9, Tuesday, May 28 -- Departure Day

  • Our time together comes to an end, but garden lovers are likely to find inspiration wherever they are. Tour members can choose to return home or carry on the adventure.

Day 1, Thursday, May 18: ARRIVAL

Tour members arrange their own transportation to London and to the Crowne Plaza London Heathrow Airport Hotel at Terminal 4 , where a reservation has been made (included in tour price).

We will gather for a welcome dinner this evening at the hotel restaurant (included in tour price).

Day 2, Friday, May 19: LEONARDSLEE LAKES & GARDENS & HIGH BEECHES

We’ll leave our airport hotel and travel to Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens’ beautiful woodland garden, which should be at its peak in May, awash with countless enormous rhododendrons. Wander this large property’s lakeside pathways, tour the impressive Victorian-era rock garden and even catch a glimpse of the garden’s wallaby colony! There’s a lot to see here.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit another beautiful woodland garden, High Beeches , where the owner will accompany us on a walk through this beautiful and natural landscape filled with flowering trees and shrubs. Here rhododendrons grow as high as a house, covered with countless flowers. Carpets of bluebells complete the idyllic experience.

Day 3, Saturday, May 20: PASHLEY MANOR GARDENS & FAIRLIGHT END

We’ll start our day at Pashley Manor Gardens , a classic English country garden. The 11-acre property’s design is partly formal, partly natural, with spectacular views over the Sussex countryside. Take in its perennial borders, classic hedges and walls, a potager, rose walks, and even a ha-ha.

At midday we’ll spend a few hours in Rye, a medieval town set where three rivers meet a few miles from the English Channel. We’ll find lunch at a local pub and then wander this charming village’s hilly, cobbled streets. You can climb the tower of the 12th-century church for a great view, stop for a cup of tea or shop.

Finally, we’ll end our day at Fairlight End , which is beautifully embedded in the undulating landscape and an excellent example of contemporary English gardening. The owner of this 3-acre private garden will give us a tour and answer our questions about the plants and design, which melds contemporary planting styles and materials, such as Corten steel, with the surrounding natural landscape.

Day 4, Sunday, May 21: SISSINGHURST CASTLE GARDEN & GREAT DIXTER

For our first garden visit, we travel to the iconic Sissinghurst Castle Garden . These treasured gardens result from the commitment and imagination of writer Vita Sackville-West and her diplomat husband, Harold Nicolson. In the 1930s, he planned the gardens’ architecture, and she filled the spaces with lush, romantic plantings. Besides exploring the series of famous garden rooms, make sure you climb the tower and take in the panoramic views at the top. A pilgrimage to Sissinghurst is an absolute must.

In the afternoon we’ll explore Great Dixter , probably the best known and most loved of all English gardens. Head gardener Fergus Garrett, who worked for the former owner, famed plantsman and writer Christopher Lloyd, during the last years of his life, carries on the tradition of experimentation that Lloyd started. Although the garden’s structure is early 20th century, the spirit of the plantings is contemporary. Great Dixter is a visionary, exuberant, plant lover’s haven and has something different to offer in every season.

Day 5, Monday, May 22: PENNS IN THE ROCKS & LONG BARN

Today we’ll be visiting two private gardens. The first is Penns in the Rocks , the home built in the 18th century for the family of William Penn. The gardens were developed by the Bloomsbury poet Dorothy Wellesley in the 20th century. You’ll find plantings intermingled with natural stone outcroppings, walled gardens, a kitchen garden and more here. And don’t miss the Temple of Friendship, a structure Wellesley commissioned in honor of the “poets who loved Penns,” including W.B. Yeats, in 1938.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit Long Barn , the garden where Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson tested garden design ideas and developed their plant palette from 1915 to 1930 before they established Sissinghurst. Now it is a lovingly cared-for country garden, where you still find the original structures and planting style. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and hear stories with the owner of this private garden. A rare treat.

Day 6, Tuesday, May 23: RHS WISLEY & LOSELEY PARK

For more than 100 years, the Royal Horticultural Society Garden, Wisley has been a center of British gardening excellence. Although the garden spreads over 240 acres, we’ll focus on the demonstration gardens, which feature everything from stream gardens to meadows to double borders. Of particular interest is the Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden with nearly 4,000 roses and the Cottage Garden’s soft, romantic plantings. You’ll also want to see the impressive rock gardens and stroll through the woodland garden. It will be a busy morning!

We’ll spend the afternoon at Loseley Park , a classic estate with a beautiful walled garden filled with mixed plantings of bulbs, perennials and flowering shrubs. Elsewhere fantastic trees make an impressive appearance. We’ll also take a tour of the impressive 16th- century house and enjoy an afternoon cream tea.

Garden scenery

Day 7, Wednesday, May 24: MANOR HOUSE & ST. TIMOTHEE

Today we visit two more lovely private gardens. We’ll begin our day at The Manor House , where the famous Gertrude Jekyll designed the flower borders in 1908. The current owners have carefully restored the garden to its original glory, and you’ll have a chance to ask them questions over tea and cake in this beautiful and historic spot.

Starting in 2011, Sarah and Sal Pajwani started St. Timothee’s transformation from an overgrown field, with only a few mature trees in it, into a stunning, year-round garden that won the 2021 Nation’s Favourite Garden award in England & Wales, a competition for gardens that open for charity with the National Garden Scheme. We will see color-themed borders, a wildlife pond, a boxwood parterre, and a rose terrace during our visit to this special place. Sarah will be available to introduce us to the garden and answer our questions.

Day 8, Thursday, May 25: CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW & CHELSEA PHYSIC GARDENS

Our last day together: The Royal Horticultural Society bills the Chelsea Flower Show as The Greatest Show on Earth, and for gardeners all over the world, this is absolutely true! On the former grounds of the Chelsea Hospital you find the latest trends, the newest plants and the well-known garden competition, where every designer dreams of winning the Gold Medal. And walk through the world-famous tent to see the offerings of all the different nurseries. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. When you’re ready for a few moments of down time, steal away to the much quieter Chelsea Physic Garden , established in 1673 as a repository of medicinal plants.

Day 9, Friday, May 26: DEPARTURE

Our time together has ended, but garden lovers always find fresh inspiration wherever they are. Tour members can choose to return home or carry on the adventure. We’ll provide coach transfer to Heathrow Airport at 7:00 AM for those with flights leaving at 11:00 AM or later. Alternatively, you can take a taxi at the time of your choosing from the hotel to the airport.

May 18 – Crowne Plaza London Heathrow T4

May 19-21 – The Spa Hotel

May 22-23 – Audleys Wood Hotel

May 24-25 – Macdonald Windsor Hotel

YOUR TOUR HOSTS

Kristin beane sullivan.

In her 26 years at Garden Gate magazine, Kristin Beane Sullivan has been lucky enough to meet hundreds (if not thousands) of gardeners, tour and photograph countless gardens and learn something from every single gardener she’s met. She comes from a long line of farmers and gardeners, and today tends an ever-expanding urban garden with her husband and three children who are a lot more help in the garden than she was at their ages.

Eric Flynn started as an illustrator with Garden Gate more than 26 years ago, and now he directs all the design for both Garden Gate & Horticulture, as well as Cuisine at Home magazine. Although his roles (and design technology!) have changed through the years, you might still occasionally still see him with a pencil or watercolor brush in his hand. Eric especially prides himself on the containers that fill the porch and deck of his suburban home in every season.

Show Gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023

Take a first look at the chelsea show gardens that will take centre stage at rhs chelsea flower show 2023..

rbc-brewin-dolphin-aw1_1088x612

The Main Avenue is often the star attraction of the Chelsea Flower Show , and many of the UK’s most admired garden designers are included in the line-up of the 12 show gardens on display this year. Gold Medal winner Cleve West is returning to Chelsea for the first time in seven years with the Centrepoint Garden, and Mark Gregory, the most medaled designer in RHS history, is back with a Chelsea first: a ‘plot to plate’ experience. Many of the gardens are exploring environmental messages, whilst others are promoting the therapeutic effects of gardening. Sustainability is a key consideration, and all show gardens from Chelsea will be transferred to another location once the show has concluded, ensuring they can be enjoyed by thousands more visitors.

What are this year’s Chelsea show gardens?

Centrepoint Garden

Cleve West is back at Chelsea after seven years with the Centrepoint Garden . The focal point of which is a part-demolished Victorian house where nature begins to appear in the rubble, an apt metaphor for the work Centrepoint does in helping young people to find homes and jobs and build lives. Much of the planting of the garden is self-seeded, recreating the beauty  nature brings without human intervention. Sculptor Johnny Woodford’s bird boxes will create a soundscape of domestic sounds like a crackling fire, children having fun, and excited chatter, all the elements that make up a home. “It’s daunting because this is not the kind of garden you expect to see at Chelsea”, Cleve explains, “but the main thing is regardless whether anyone likes it or not, is that it gets talked about.”

Myeloma UK — A Life Worth Living

Optimism, hope and resilience are the profound themes of Chris Beardshaw’s garden design for Myeloma UK — A Life Worth Living who are marking their 25th Anniversary this year. There are two distinctive parts to this exquisite garden that opens with a formal planted border which includes Irises and Geraniums, and then leads visitors on a circuitous path into a woodland glade that canopies two opulent neoclassic temples including reflective water pools.

Horatio’s Garden

Mobility requirements and creating a space of sanctuary and hope were at the heart of the brief for Horatio’s Garden , designed by Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg from Harris Bugg Studio . “The planting and the surfaces used in this garden take into account that many of the visitors will be in hospital beds and wheelchairs, but Hugo, I and Olivia Chapple, the founder of Horatio’s also wanted to create a sanctuary that was uncompromising on beauty too”, Charlotte explained. A lovely canopy of trees creates dappled shade, important to protect patients from harmful UV rays; trees like Betula Nigra have a tactile bark which is a lovely contrast to the clinical and manmade materials patients are interacting with in a hospital environment, and water features bring a sense of oasis and calm, whilst also nodding to the industrial stories of Sheffield, the town of the garden’s future home at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre.

Centre for Mental Health’s The Balance Garden

The Balance Garden , designed by Jonathan Davies and Steve Williams of Wild City Studio , is assembled from a variety of reclaimed and repurposed materials that make it a striking climate resilient space. Crushed site waste will facilitate the growth of beautiful wild flowers and grasses, and their planting, including edimentals Brassica and Asparagus, consider wildlife, food provision and authentic nature experiences in an urban landscape.

Transcendence Garden

The grieving process can be a dark and tumultuous time, but designers Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson are creating a spiritual and uplifting space in their Transcendence Garden where bereaved visitors can reflect in an environment of calm and uplifting tranquillity. The eyeline is drawn upward by tall trees which create a cantilevered canopy. The planting in the wider garden is set in gravel and includes evergreen mounds and colourful perennials.

RBC Brewin Dolphin Garden

Brownfield sites tend to have poor soil conditions and offer homeowners a challenging environment to nurture a garden, but designer Paul Hervey-Brookes and Brewin Dolphin have created an oasis which takes inspiration from an imagined young couple who want to create a beautiful habitat outside their backdoor with sustainability in mind in the RBC Brewin Dolphin Garden . Plants have been selected that aid the restoration of the soil and purify the air. Ideas of custodianship abound in this garden that boasts a small garden space for edibles and a pool edged in Welsh slate that future-proofs the garden against flooding risk.

samaritans_-listening-garden-designed-by-darren-hawkes

Samaritans’ Listening Garden

The Listening Garden , designed by Darren Hawkes  for the Samaritans explores the power of connection: “one of the privileges of being a Samaritan is you get to have these really intimate conversations with people and I hope that this garden acknowledges the very real suffering that people are going through in an authentic way”. The garden is entirely constructed of reclaimed resources “which is a metaphor throughout the garden that you can take something that is discarded and by adding attention you can add value and make it precious.” Plants from America, Mexico, Vietnam and the Mediterranean are featured. Spiny and thorny plants in deep reds and burgundies open the garden, but as visitors move through the planting the colours and textures soften.

The Fauna & Flora Garden

The Fauna & Flora Garden , designed by Chelsea Gold Medal winner 2019 Jilayne Rickards , celebrates the success of charity’s mountain gorilla conservation work . The garden maps the journey of an ecotourist on a gorilla trek, among the verdure highlights include a medicinal garden, a tourist kiosk selling local crafts, and a cascading waterfall. After Chelsea, the garden will be relocated to the Biomes of The Eden Project in Cornwall, who will also be supplying the majority of the garden’s plants which thrive at high-altitude and are found in the Afromontane Virunga area in Central Africa.

The Nurture and Landscapes Garden

Sarah Price’s The Nurture and Landscapes Garden takes its inspiration from Sir Cedric Morris, the plantsman and artist, who collected and bred at least 90 named varieties of irises in the grounds of Benton End , his 16th Century home in Suffolk. The Benton Irises in a myriad of beautiful watercolour yellows, purples and mauves create an intriguing contrast with the verdant saplings and grasses, whilst climbers supported by reclaimed timber frame this lush and sustainable tribute to the twentieth-century artist.

Savills Garden

The centrepiece of Mark Gregory’s Savills Garden is a working kitchen where guests can relax under a mature tree in a walled garden that evokes a country hotel setting, and tuck in to meals prepared from the edible planting. It is the first time in Chelsea’s history that visitors can enjoy a ‘plot-to-plate’ experience and once the show is over the garden will be used to teach cookery skills to young people at a residential centre in Nottingham.

the-royal-entomological-society-garden-designed-by-tom-massey

 The Royal Entomological Society Garden

Tom Massey is offering an ‘insect’s eye view’ in his design for The Royal Entomological Society Garden . An outdoor lab, built into the hillside, allows visitors space to study and, cleverly, a moveable projector has been linked to microscopes in a lab which allows for insects to be viewed at magnified scale. Education is at the heart of this garden, and diverse topography from rammed earth floors, to piles of rubble create a multitude of habitats for insects, and the naturalistic planting which mimics a woodland meadow allows pollinators to thrive in the space too.

A Letter from a Million Years Past

Jihae Hwang is back at Chelsea after 10 years with her garden A Letter from a Million Years Past , which evokes Jirisan, a mountain in South Korea. “We hope to convey the meaning of biodiversity and the preservation of species through the growing environment of medicinal plants, in a primitive environment with no human interference.” Jihae explains, “In the East, the human body and nature are not separated – we believe that nature forms the human body.” A 5m-high drying tower in the centre of the garden, handmade by artisan craftsman Alex Gibbon, symbolically demonstrates the inter-relationship between the lives of people, plants and the environment.

Chelsea Flower Show gardens given first ever green audit to reduce footprint

The designs for gardens in the Show and Sanctuary categories – the largest on display – were analysed against a range of sustainability criteria.

english garden tours chelsea flower show

All large gardens displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show have gone through a “green audit” as part of efforts to reduce the event’s environmental footprint.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), which runs the famous show, has introduced a “green garden audit” for the first time ahead of this year’s event in May.

All gardens in the Show and Sanctuary categories – the largest on display – were reviewed by landscape design firm Nicholsons alongside RHS head of sustainability Malcolm Anderson.

Before being built, they analysed the gardens’ designs against a range of sustainability criteria, including material selection, waste, biodiversity and ecology, water and air.

They then worked with the designers and contractors to adjust their plans to reduce the environmental footprint of the projects.

The Terrence Higgins Trust Bridge to 2030 Garden

RHS said the design changes implemented had “a significant impact” after reducing carbon emissions across the two categories by 28%.

The biggest cuts achieved were through new choices on building materials and construction methods, it added.

For example, Matthew Childs, who is designing the Terrance Higgins Trust Bridge to 2030 Garden, reduced his carbon emissions by removing block walling in his original design and replacing it with reclaimed timber.

Meanwhile, Ann-Marie Powell, designer of The Octavia Hill Garden by Blue Diamond with the National Trust, saved a large amount of CO2 by significantly reducing the use of cement.

Liz Nicholson, Nicholsons’ managing director, said: “All of the designers without exception have welcomed the audit and embraced the learnings and worked incredibly hard to adapt and tweak their gardens to reduce the impacts.

“Many design with the planet in mind and very few changes were necessary. But even these celebrated designers discovered one or two new opportunities and were open-minded to tweak their designs.

“Designers felt that this process would affect how they design in future and were keen to take their learnings back to their practices.”

The Octavia Hill Garden by Blue Diamond with The National Trust, Show Garden, designed by Ann-Marie Powell.og

Mr Anderson said the audit was “one step further” following last year’s addition of sustainability criteria to the show’s selection process, which aimed to ensure candidates “thought about the environmental impact of their gardens at the design stage”.

“As the UK’s leading gardening charity, we have been making positive changes across the organisation and at our shows to make our practices more sustainable and this is just one example of the progress we are making this year as we continue to make changes to reduce our environmental impact,” he said.

The move has enabled RHS “to better understand the carbon footprint of the gardens at the show”, Mr Anderson added.

He said the charity also hopes to open up the conversation more widely within the horticultural industry on how to create gardens more sustainably in the future.

As part of the efforts to recognise sustainability at the show, the RHS is also introducing the new “Environmental Innovation Award” this year, which is open to all gardens that have been through the green audit.

Sarah Poll, RHS’s head of shows development, said: “The RHS has a responsibility to take a leading role in encouraging everyone to progress and drive environmental innovation and collaborate with the industry to make positive, sustainable changes.

“We hope by celebrating successes through this new award at our world-famous flower show and showing how small changes can make a big difference through the new green garden audit we will help continue to encourage positive change.”
