9 Best Travel Companies for Walking Tours and Hiking Tours in 2024

Enjoy some of the world's most beautiful landscapes at the speed of your own two feet..

Beth Luberecki

Review: EF Go Ahead’s Food & Wine: Piedmont & Tuscany with America’s Test Kitchen

There’s something extra special about seeing someplace on foot the way you do on a walking tour, hiking tour, or guided trek. Maybe it’s the slower pace and the ability to actually admire sights you might just zip by in a car, bus, or train. Maybe it’s the easy opportunity for connections and conversations with local people. Or maybe it’s being out in the fresh air, enjoying and appreciating the natural setting of the location you’re visiting.

It’s probably some combination of all three that make walking tours, trekking tours, and hiking tours a popular way to travel. Whether you prefer an easygoing amble, a moderate hike, or a challenging summit, there are some great foot-fueled tours from hiking tour companies that explore famous locales and off-the-beaten-path spots all over the world. Here are my picks for the nine best travel companies offering walking tours and guided hiking trips.

Trekking tours travel to remote destinations on challenging terrain that requires both specialized equipment and the ability to rough it.

TOURS FOR TWENTYSOMETHINGS: 7 Best Group Travel Companies for Young Adults in 2024

We've done several hiking tours in Europe with Backroads and love them. We are just wondering if there are other similar "level" hiking tour companies we should be trying. Has anyone done both Backroads and Country Walkers that could compare? Or Backroads and any others we should consider? TIA

I have not done any Backroads trips but have enjoyed a few trips with Inntravel. They are considerably cheaper than Backroads but do give options on the standard of accomodation you stay in and do use some nice hotels. They are also self guided, but we have found that often you meet the same people having dinner in the evenings so there can be some social aspects too.

For an active group trip we found KE's Wild Tuscany excellent - https://www.keadventure.com/holidays/italy-walking-tuscany-garfagnana-pisa-lucca but we had to book our trip well in advance as it was so popular. The food is really good and the scenery magnificent.

Pretty late to chime in, but I've done two trips with Backroads and two trips with VBT (their walking trips are now called Country Walkers) and they were all great. Same great level of service, we just found the hotels to be a bit better quality with Backroads. It wasn't a big deal to us but it was a decent savings, so we would choose Country Walkers in the future.

As a professional mountain hiking guide based in Italy who has guided for REI (when they still sold overseas tours), as well as other major T.O.'s, I would not recommend signing up for guided tours with operators who employ non-professional, uncertified guides. Sure, those tours may be cheaper (although not necessarily so), but when sh*t happens, it's the experience and skills of a pro that makes the difference.

What walking/hiking tours have certified guides?

Tripadvisor staff removed this post because it did not meet Tripadvisor's forum posting guidelines with prohibiting self-promotional advertising or solicitation.

I really wish REI hadn't cancelled the overseas trips. I've done several of those in the 2010s. I did 10 Backroads in the past eight months and highly recommend them. Guides really are so important.

We did a couple of long distance hiking trips with Macs Adventures based in the UK. They were self guided but I believe they also do group trips. Everything was well organized, we had a choice of accommodation levels. Their customer support was excellent. When my husband left hiking poles at the accommodation MACS arranged for delivery to our next accom.

Looks like Tripadvisor removed a reply here. I'd like to know which tour companies have certified, or at least trained, guides. I've done 2 hiking trips with Road Scholar - one in the US and one in Italy and not only enjoyed them, but felt like I was in good hands. The guide as well as the tour leader were excellent.

You did 10 Backroads trips in 8 months?! How is that even possible??
