Small Town, Big Experience.

There’s something very special about this place..

You’ll sense it when you stand under the oaks at Toomer’s Corner. You’ll feel it when you’re greeted by your future classmates on the red brick sidewalks that snake through campus. You’ll know it when you hear “War Eagle” shouted across Samford Lawn.

Your campus visit to Auburn will feel both familiar and exciting: like coming home again for the first time.

Coosa County high school students enjoy one-of-a-kind visit to Auburn University

Content body.

A group of students stand in front of an Auburn University Regional Airport sign

A dozen Central High School students from Coosa County, Alabama, recently experienced a one-of-a-kind visit to the Plains, courtesy of Auburn University Facilities Management (AUFM) .

On April 25, students were given a unique glimpse into the dynamic world of Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) through an immersive experience that took them on eye-opening tours of several university offices and units. Hosted by AUFM, the students gained valuable insights into various career paths within the TDL cluster by watching presentations and participating in interactive tours in and around campus.

Auburn experts shared industry knowledge and personal journeys with the Sylacauga-area students, and the tour featured presentations in the Auburn University Regional Airport Board Room. Industry leaders from different facets of TDL shared their expertise with the students and high school faculty members.

Those experts included:

  • Arishna Lastinger, director of Auburn University Parking Services , ignited student interest with her presentation on innovative programs like Tiger Rescue and Lyft partnerships. Students gained insights into the team’s structure and various entry-level positions available. Lastinger’s personal journey from education to professional growth inspired the audience.
  • Chris Harris, director of Auburn University Transportation Services , emphasized the paramount importance of safety in transportation professions, sharing insights into ridership, bus routes and accessibility initiatives.
  • Bill Hutto, executive director, Auburn University Regional Airport , captivated students with a live flight-tracking software demonstration and showcased the critical role of the airport in economic development. He also presented many of the potential career paths available in aviation.

Interactive tours spark curiosity

Students actively participated in tours, exploring key facilities, including:

  • Delta Air Lines Aviation Education Building: Students learned about cutting-edge technologies in aviation and logistics from Auburn’s School of Aviation Striped Wing Ambassadors. They explored the flight simulator room, featuring a $500,000 Airbus A320 simulator, classrooms and testing rooms.
  • Dispatch desk: Students gained insight into pre-flight procedures and the crucial role of the dispatch team.
  • Auburn School of Aviation’s maintenance hangar: Students witnessed firsthand the work of Auburn mechanics who maintain the university’s planes.
  • AUFM automotive shop and warehouse: Students explored the inner workings of vehicle maintenance and logistics operations.

Additionally, guest speaker Aziza Hurt, traffic systems technician assistant for the City of Auburn, shared her inspiring story. Her unique educational journey, including attending Southern Union’s FAME Program, emphasized the value of adaptability and diverse career paths within TDL.

Igniting a passion, building a future workforce

AUFM’s Training and Workforce Development Team works diligently to provide students with a variety of opportunities that successfully spark curiosity and ignite students’ passion for exciting and diverse career opportunities within Facilities Management.

  • Campus tours: AUFM offers tours showcasing the diverse career paths available within the facilities management industry. Students gain firsthand exposure to real-world operations.
  • In-class programming: AUFM brings the world of facilities management to classrooms. Interactive presentations introduce students to the various jobs offered at Auburn University.
  • Career connections : This state-recognized best practices program offers high school students a unique opportunity to combine work-based learning experiences with academic credit . Through summer employment opportunities, students gain valuable on-the-job training and develop essential skills in the trades.
  • Electrical, HVAC and plumbing apprenticeships: AUFM’s paid apprenticeship programs provide students with a path to a rewarding career with comprehensive training and industry certifications.

Inspiring the next generation

By combining engaging tours with industry-leading workforce development programs, AUFM is cultivating the next generation of facilities management professionals. Its dedication to fostering student interest ensures a skilled and qualified workforce for the future.

“AUFM is committed to building a pipeline of future employees by fostering interest in young minds,” said Loren Winn, division director of Facilities Management Human Resources. “We applaud the collaboration among the university units, including the airport, parking services and transportation services, with Central High School on this important initiative. We enjoyed giving these students a unique experience and showcasing all Auburn University and the TDL industry have to offer them.”

High school senior accepted into 11 colleges

DETROIT (WXYZ) - A Michigan high school senior has plenty of options after she graduates this spring.

She applied to 11 colleges and was accepted into each one, including five Ivy League schools.

Samarah Saggers has always believed in reaching for the stars.

The senior at Woodhaven High School is president of her class, valedictorian, and she’s never given up on her dream of attending a top-tier college.

“When I first got into my first one. It was like, I don’t even know how to describe it. I was shocked, was overjoyed. I was ecstatic, but most importantly, I didn’t believe that it was real,” she said.

It was real and a dream come true.

“I got into Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Brown and Cornell,” Samarah Saggers said.

When asked how she pulled it off, she said, “I don’t know. I asked myself the same question every day. I don’t know.”

She said she knew early on where she wanted to go and already knows her major.

“I’ve currently decided I will be attending Yale University in the fall,” she said. “I’m planning on studying cognitive science or computer science and psychology and then also getting a certificate in Spanish. And I think that I’d like to go to law school after.”

Her mother Sherry Saggers raised Samarah and her brother as a single mother.

“I saw the potential way back in elementary school, and it followed through all the way through middle school and high school, where she just was so focused. And I nurtured that, you know,” Sherry Saggers said. “I prioritized for her, her education rather than assigning her chores and things like that.”

Samarah Saggers’ story is a reminder that with hard work determination and a little bit of luck, anything is possible, and she has this advice for the next graduating class.

“At the end of the day. It’s not necessarily about what college you go to or what your plans are after high school. No matter what, you still have the power and the ability to make a meaningful impact on society,” she said.

Samarah Saggers will officially graduate from high school next month.

With the spring transfer portal window closed, a look at six college football teams that cleaned up in various ways.

Mississippi

In terms of quantity and quality, Ole Miss killed it. In a Nick Saban-less Southeastern Conference, the Rebels might be the best non-Georgia team in 2024.

The Rebels had good returning pieces at quarterback (Jaxson Dart) and receiver, and then Lane Kiffin went all in behind the Grove Collective to build a contender in the first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff.

The jewels of the class are mostly on the defensive side with DT Walter Nolen (Texas A&M), DE Princely Umanmielen (Florida) and LB Chris Paul (Arkansas), plus WR Juice Wells (South Carolina). The Rebels sprinkled in offensive line help via Washington and topped it off with running back (Henry Parrish, Miami) and secondary (Isaiah Hamilton, Houston) depth in the spring.

The Ducks replaced the most experienced quarterback college football has ever had (Bo Nix) with another sixth-year player. Dillon Gabriel (UCF, Oklahoma) might not develop into a first-round draft pick, but he is more than capable of being a quality triggerman for a prolific college offense.

WR Evan Stewart (Texas A&M) is very likely to develop into a first-round draft pick. The Ducks added two good cornerbacks (Jabbar Muhammad, Washington; Kam Alexander, UTSA) and bulked up an already promising defensive line (Jamaree Caldwell, Houston; Derrick Harmon, Michigan State).

Beating Southern California for Harmon and grabbing S Peyton Woodyard (Alabama) in the spring punctuated the transfer class and has the Ducks ready roll into the Big Ten.

In Year 3 under Mario Cristobal, Miami is looking for a breakthrough.

The Hurricanes made a good case as the winners of the spring transfer window by landing all-Pac-12 RB Damien Martinez (Oregon State), WR Sam Brown (Houston), DT Simeon Barrow (Michigan State), LB Jaylin Alderman (Louisville) and CB Dyoni Hill (Marshall).

That came after adding QB Cam Ward (Washington State), who also considered entering the NFL draft, in the winter.

The Buckeyes’ transfer class had just six players, but they shopped at the top of the market.

S Caleb Downs was one of the best defensive players in the country last season as a freshman at Alabama. RB Quinshon Judkins ran for 2,725 yards in two seasons at Mississippi. Will Howard had 48 touchdown passes and 19 TD runs in four seasons at Kansas State. Plus, they added former Alabama starting center Seth McLaughlin and Crimson Tide five-star quarterback signee Julian Sayin.

All that on top of Ohio State’s mountain of returning talent and coach Ryan Day is well positioned to snap a three-game losing streak against Michigan or face the consequences.

New coach Kalen DeBoer’s most notable portal acquisition was a bounce-back from Iowa.

Offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor, a freshman starter last year, left in January for his home-state Hawkeyes. He then changed his mind and returned to Alabama in the spring window.

DeBoer lured four of his former Washington players to the SEC, including talented C Parker Brailsford and WR Germie Bernard.

DT LT Overton (Texas A&M), CB Domani Jackson (USC) and S Keon Sabb (Michigan) are high-ceiling additions to the defense. And to replace star K Will Reichard, the Tide signed Groza Award winner Graham Nicholson from Miami, Ohio.

Deion Sanders is at it again. After bringing in more than 50 transfers last year, Coach Prime has a transfer class of 39 (and possibly counting).

The Buffaloes badly needed to reinforce their lines after tanking a 3-0 start to Sanders’ tenure in Boulder. With that in mind, CU added nine offensive linemen — including Tyler Johnson from Houston and Payton Kirkland from Texas — and 11 defensive linemen — led by B.J. Green from Arizona State and Dayon Hayes from Pittsburgh.

Colorado notably lost RB Dylan Edwards (Kansas State), but brought in a pair of promising ball carriers in Dallan Hayden (Ohio State) and Rashad Amos (Miami, Ohio).
