“Edgy” isn’t really a word that one would think to apply to Leno as a rule. “Affable” fits the man much better. On stage he comes across as genuine and friendly — if it’s all fake and he’s really some raging tyrant backstage, the man missed his calling as an actor.

Leno brought his comedy to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando on Friday night; he’s the first comedian I’ve seen use the new Steinmetz Hall. Turns out, it’s a good spot for comedy with the hall’s intimate feel and good sightlines.

Leno, 71, knows how to pitch his standup show to the demographic filling the seats, though to his credit he only mentioned “the old days” once or twice. He trots out Walter Cronkite and the Sears catalog as cultural touchstones — scoring an easy but hearty laugh at the expense of beleaguered Sears.

Leno on the wonder of ordering from the fabled catalog: “Eight weeks later it was right there!”

He’s careful not to offend on the political front: One Biden joke, one Trump joke, both sillier than truly insulting.

Like a lot of good comedy, Leno’s is based on trying to make sense of the world around him — from the viewpoint of Americans of a certain age. When he approaches the edge of edginess, it’s with the twinkle of an uncle who knows he’s being a little naughty.

He opens with a Harvey Weinstein joke, describes a new app that checks for prostate cancer with that big grin, and references pornography and bacon-flavored condoms in his quips. One of the cleverest jokes of the night involves Kim Kardashian’s posterior — this time delivered completely deadpan.

The edgiest — one that provokes imagery of guns in school.

“It’s very hard to write a school-shooting joke,” he notes, and because he’s the comforting face that millions watched nightly as they settled into bed he gets away with it.

His rapid-fire opening segment gets good mileage out of the COVID-19 pandemic, using it to score laughs just moments apart on topics as disparate as the plastic-surgery prone women of Beverly Hills and the Dollar Store.

And he has other topical fun with Amazon and the Apple Store, in which he describes a typical worker as only a Boomer could.

Soul singer and songwriter Morgan James opened for Jay Leno on Friday in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

He later segues into longer comic stories about his wife and parents — nothing too embarrassing, gently ribbing his family, perhaps, but not mocking or belittling them. It’s a testament to how comedy can be funny without being mean.

On Friday, Leno’s 70-minute set was preceded by singer Morgan James with husband Doug Wamble on guitar. Her soulful voice also sounded great in Steinmetz with the nuances of the guitar coming through.

She showed off her incredible range on a cover of Mariah Carey’s “Emotions,” and delivered original music and hits by Elton John and Aretha Franklin in appealing retro style. Like Leno, she’s fine keeping things old school.

We’ve got the windy city covered., jay leno takes a break from tv for a laughter-loaded hard rock return to stand-up comedy roots.

The moment he took over for Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show,” Jay Leno became the king of late night, and despite moving on from the role, the Television Hall of Famer went on to host the car-themed “Jay Leno’s Garage” and the revived game show “You Bet Your Life.”

In between, the multi-faceted entertainer regularly returns to stand-up comedy, an occasion which filled up the red hot Hard Rock Live Northern Indiana on Veterans Day, where for precisely 90 minutes, he ran through nearly every cultural topic imaginable.

Devoid of being overly raunchy, the headliner compared the pornography of back in the day to now, dissected the side effects of several prescription drugs and spoke up against cancel culture, all with his signature wit firmly in tact.

Along the way, he referenced the disgraced Bill Cosby, “Uber driver” Kevin Spacey and the constantly high Willie Nelson, plus a few minor yet humorous barbs at both President Joe Biden and Donald Trump before quickly backing away and insisting it would an apolitical performance.

Instead, he pivoted to remarking about political correctness, especially compared to how it used to be, rewriting the lyrics to Isaac Hayes’ funky “Theme From ‘Shaft’” to fit modern protocol and recalling how some previous interns seemed to speak a different language all together.

Given the Gary venue isn’t very far from Chicago, Leno even recalled opening for legendary singer/actress Freda Payne at Mister Kelly’s and dining at Mr. Beef where he got into a heated discussion with some fellow Italians over their exaggerated heritage on “The Sopranos.”

“We could not tell these jokes if it weren’t for you my friend,” Leno remarked while thanking the Hard Rock for its hospitality, and in turn, was met with a similar reaction, if only for his uncanny ability to make this increasingly heavy world temporarily feel at least a little bit lighter.

NEVER STOPPED LAUGHING

Saw him May 5, 2018, at the Tuacahn Amphitheater in St George UT. He performed nonstop for 90 minutes. He had just the right mix of humor. Very little political, nothing offensive, so reminiscent of the old Tonight Show. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

The best comedy show I have ever seen. Jay covered a lot of current events and was on his game. His stand-up style is reminiscent of his Tonight Show monologues. He took time to pose for pictures and sign autographs after the show. One of the classiest persons in show business.

Flawless performance from a master stand up comedian. Jay Leno is at the top of his game and like a fine Bordeaux his comedy has more depth with the passing of time. Take your breath away laughter is followed by insightful commentary and heartfelt stories. And Roy Thompson Hall provides a luxurious and intimate experience.

TOTALLY UNDERWHELMED

I attended the Jay Leno show Apr 27 and was totally underwhelmed. I had anticipated, with this mans cache a little entertainment. What I experienced was a man walking on stage with NO introduction door opens Jay walks out and starts..HUH? where was the lead in where was the story where was the "HEEEEERRS Jay Leno. These tickets were 122/piece not cheap..GREAT seats super theater, but where was a little Hollywood? I am not talking the Rocketts and a Van Halen light show, but give me a little more than a 68 year old dude walking out of a door! Yes I did laugh at a number of his jokes, I'm a fan of this legendary comedian, but for heaven sake I got more out of seeing Rickles in 1977 and talk about that show to this day! So there you have it 1 fellow's view, but will not be giving Jay any of my money.....oh sorry to make matters worse I was given the tickets they cost me 0

Comedian Jay Leno has 17 shows all over the U.S. this fall.

Comedian Jay Leno could have ridden off into the sunset on his classic cars following his 2014 departure from NBC’s “Tonight Show.”

Instead, the 72-year-old comedian has steadily hosted “Jay Leno’s Garage,” the revival of “You Bet Your Life” and still travels across North America performing stand-up .

Over the next few months, he’s set to sling jokes at Morristown’s Mayo Performing Arts Center on Oct. 13, Red Bank’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre on Oct. 15, Easton’s State Theatre on April 7, 2023 and Englewood’s Performing Arts Center on April 8, 2023.

Take a Look at Jay Leno's Collection

Jay Leno's legendary car collection now boasts over 180 exotic cars, hypercars and museum-grade artifacts. Put simply, nobody else in the world has a space-age McLaren P1 parked near their antique fire engine.

Yet, over the years Jay has also added several affordable, attainable and dare I say "normal" cars to his collection. These were cars that cost well under $70k new, and yet still managed to grab Jay's attention for some special reason.

So, which mass-market Chevy does Jay use to get groceries? Which handmade English car cost less than a base BMW 5 Series, but can outrun a 600-horsepower M5? Finally, which performance car has "the greatest engine currently being produced in America?"

Let's look at some of the most surprisingly affordable cars in Jay Leno's collection.

1996 Mazda Miata

Original msrp: $18,450 | adj. for inflation: $33,996.

Looking for a fun daily driver? A track day toy? A bonafide sports car that's cheaper to buy, maintain and insure than a Toyota Camry ? Ask any car-focused forum, and you're bound to hear the beloved roadster's unofficial backronym: "Miata Is Always The Answer."

Jay Leno himself seems to agree. "This is all I really need," he said on an episode of Jay Leno's Garage. "Plenty of power, fun to drive, good handling." That comes from a man who put 12,000 miles on a McLaren F1.

Addressing the Miata's top criticism – its lack of acceleration – Leno said, "it's not about going fast – it's about going swiftly. "

Even so, how can a roadster whose fundamentals haven't changed since 1989 continue to outsell the competition? "You can add horsepower, or you can take off weight. Taking off weight's a little better."

2011 Chevrolet Volt

Original msrp: $41,000 | adj. for inflation: $52,014.

Jay Leno may have a stable of Bentley and Lamborghini models at his disposal, but for a time, his daily driver was a humble Chevy Volt .

"It's the car I use to run errands, and when it's raining, bad weather, when I have to go to the airport. It's a great everyday car," he told the press at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Indeed, the first-gen Volt was a smash hit right out the gate. It earned a 9.7 out of 10 in our rankings, lauding its slick, futuristic interior and remarkably solid handling – a quality distinctly missing from the early hybrid market.

A decade later, when a fire risk forced GM to recall every Volt ever made, Leno rushed to the company's defense. "The last days of old technology are always better than the first days of new technology, but we’re beyond the first days of new technology," he told CNBC.

2005 Mazda RX-8

Original msrp: $25,375 | adj. for inflation: $36,452.

Back in 2005, Leno received a surprise 55th birthday gift from Mazda: an RX-8 SHINKA special edition in a subtle-but-handsome black cherry jacket.

In their FUEL newsletter, Mazda claimed the gift was also a thank-you present for Leno's public endorsement of the risky new RX-8 platform. It was also a thank-you for his recent acquisition of the world's first rotary-powered sports car, the 1968 Mazda Cosmo Mark II.

But, despite Leno's support, the RX-8 went on to have a troubled life. Anyone seduced by the car's Ferrari-like 9000 RPM redline was eventually betrayed by the Renesis engine's notorious unreliability. As mechanics scratched their heads – unsure if it was seals or coils causing compression issues – RX-8 sales plummeted 50% year over year.

Still, the RX-8 retains cult status – and if you drive one today, I salute you.

1999 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

Original msrp: $39,171 | adj. for inflation: $67,096.

To no one's surprise, Jay owns several rare and desirable Corvettes , including a 1963 Split-Window, a 2002 Z06 with a Tiger Shark body kit and the very first 2009 ZR1 to roll off the production line in Bowling Green.

But his most modest Corvette – a regular C5 – happens to be one of his favorites, in part because of how he got it. Back in 1999, the organizers of the Indy 500 asked Jay to drive the pace car. He did, and as a thank you, they handed him the keys to a gently-used demo C5.

In his JLG episode dedicated to the C5, Jay summarizes how most Corvette owners feel when they step into the garage.

"It just looks right."

2006 Ariel Atom

Original msrp: $41,995 | adj. for inflation: $59,445.

The Ariel Atom is what you get when you strip all the unnecessary bits from a Miata and feed it a ghost pepper.

Originally handmade in Somerset, England, the Ariel Atom became an international sensation after it melted Jeremy Clarkson's face on Top Gear . Demand quickly rose outside of the UK, and Ariel eventually signed a deal with Brammo Motorsports in Oregon to start producing U.S. models. Jay, naturally, bought #001.

"There's no doors, there's no windshield, there's no windows, there's nothing other than what you need to go fast, handle and stop... and it does its job brilliantly," Leno explains.

Despite the Atom's exotic looks and hypercar performance, the original car sold for less than the base price of a BMW 5 Series sedan.

2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8

Original msrp: $37,995 | adj. for inflation: $50,539.

Jay owns two of the most desirable Challengers ever built: a 2015 Hellcat and a 1970 R/T that he playfully admits "was like the scariest car in the world when I was a kid."

However, slotted between the two is his oft-forgotten, much more attainable 2008 Challenger SRT8. There's even footage of him heading to the local dealership to buy it, joking about the tedious paperwork.

Jay's 2008 Challenger was #004 off the line for the 3rd generation body style - an instant classic design that still endures today. Dodge's general "if it ain't broke" mindset towards the Challenger is clearly serving them, since the Mopar muscle car outsold both the Camaro and the Mustang in 2021.

Still, Jay's SRT8 isn't his favorite, possibly due to a missing third pedal. "It has the automatic transmission... that's OK," he says with a wince.

2012 Tata Nano

Original msrp: ~$1,334 usd | adj. for inflation: $1,679.

Jay's Tato Nano isn't just the most affordable car in his collection (by far) – it's also the most affordable car on earth.

Conceived by India's Tata Motors, the parent company of Jaguar Land Rover, the endearing Nano was designed to give Indian families a major upgrade from a motorcycle without breaking the bank. While Jay's ritzy Nano cost around $2,700, the Nano's very first adopters in India scored theirs for as little as $1,334.

Adjusted for inflation, the Nano's base MSRP is one-sixth the price of the original Beetle and one-twentieth the price of a Model T.

Fun fact: the Nano comes with a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive and was styled in Italy – meaning it's probably the closest Jay will come to owning a Ferrari.

2015 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

Original msrp: $65,620 | adj. for inflation: $79,006.

You know things are getting serious – and the ride is going to get stiff – when car companies start putting "R" in their model names.

But the 2015 Shelby GT 350R represents more than just a stiffer Mustang with carbon fiber wheels. As Jay himself puts it, "This is really the pinnacle of Mustang development. I think this has probably the greatest engine currently being produced in America today."

Having driven a GT350R around Atlanta Motorsports Park, I can attest that the car's greatest draw isn't raw power or performance – it's the sound.

Sure, GT350Rs like Jay's are pretty unattainable now – but you can still get the same glorious engine note from its slightly more tamed stablemate, the GT350.

2000 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson

Original msrp: $32,305 | adj. for inflation: $54,237.

Representing one of America's first attempts at a luxury truck, the 2000 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson edition featured an upgraded 5.4-liter Triton V8, an upscale interior and, of course, a black-and-chrome color scheme with a red pinstripe to earn its name.

And while today's top-trim F-150 Limited can command prices north of $80k, back in 2000, the HD edition cost a "mere" $54,000, adjusted for inflation.

Thanks in part to its relative affordability, the F-150 Harley-Davidson edition went on to become the luxury truck sales hit that the Lincoln Blackwood wasn't. It wasn't too shabby on performance, either, hitting 60 in 6.4 seconds, right behind the SVT Lightning's 5.2.

Technically speaking, Jay's F-150 Harley-Davidson isn't in his collection anymore. He and Ford auctioned it off in 2016, raising $200,000 for MS research in the process.

2012 Tesla Model S

Original msrp: $57,400 | adj. for inflation: $71,344.

"This is the car they said would never be produced," says Jay in his Model S episode from 2012.

Looking back at that walk around, it seems doubtful that either Jay or even Tesla's own Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen could have predicted what a global sensation the Model S would go on to be.

We first reviewed the Model S in 2014, and for lack of a dedicated EV category back then, we gave it the No. 1 spot in the luxury hybrid car segment.

Today's Model S is still a performance beast – especially in P100D form – but competitors are catching up. The Mercedes-Benz EQS is comfier, the Porsche Taycan handles better and both cars are better equipped with luxury features.

But even a decade on, Teslas still have that "it" factor that can't be touched.

JAY LENO DESCRIPTION

Most people are familiar with Leno's every-man style from his work as the host of the Emmy Award-winning "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." His comedy touches on topics that audiences of all ages can relate to, and he doesn't use a lot of profanity.

Before "The Tonight Show," Leno worked as a stand-up comedian headlining in clubs across the country. He performed as an opening act for well known entertainers including Tom Jones and John Denver. In 1977 Leno made his debut on "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson" and was recognized as a permanent guest host in 1987.

Leno started his tenure as the main host for "The Tonight Show" in 1992 and went on to host the show for 17 years. In 2009, he passed the torch to fellow late night comedian Conan O' Brian. Leno's new talk show, "The Jay Leno Show," debuted that same year. After the show ended, Leno returned to star as the host of the "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in March 2010 replacing O'Brien. In 2014 Leno retired from the "Tonight Show" and Jimmy Fallon replaced him.

Jay Leno Thinks The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Is Perfect

That's very high praise from someone who has driven as many cars as Jay Leno.

It's been a few months since Porsche presented the new 911 GT3 to the world, and while customer deliveries won't start until this fall, some lucky journalists have already experienced the pleasure of driving it. Early reviews suggest the new 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 is Porsche's most focused track weapon yet. Now, self-confessed gearhead Jay Leno was invited to check out the 911 GT3 to see if it lives up to the hype.

In the latest episode of Jay Leno's garage, the popular talk show host is joined by Porsche factory racing driver Patrick Long, who provides a detailed insight into the 911 GT3's improvements and advanced aerodynamics.

But then it's time for Leno to take the 911 GT3 for a spin, and he certainly wasn't disappointed. To see how it handles, Leno puts the 911 GT3 through its paces around twisty mountain roads in California. Unusually, the 911 GT3 offers a setup you rarely see in modern sports cars: a naturally aspirated engine and an old-school, six-speed manual gearbox, but the 911 GT3 Leno drives is equipped with the standard seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox, which offers significantly faster shifting times for track driving.

Powering the new 911 GT3 is a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six derived from the 911 GT3 Cup car that produces 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque and screams all the way up to 9,000 rpm. With the PDK transmission, 0-60 mph takes 3.2 seconds before the 911 GT3 tops out at 197 mph.

During his first drive, Leno praised the 911 GT3's linear throttle response and sharp, responsive steering. "Everything is so crisp like a scalpel," he said, adding that the driving experience is "so perfect." Praise doesn't get higher than that from someone who has driven as many cars as Leno. Pricing for the new 911 GT3 starts at $161,100 so it isn't cheap, but Leno's praise suggests it's worth every cent.

The show is an outgrowth of JAY LENOS GARAGE YOUTUBE CHANNEL which Leno produces and has an international following on the Web and has garnered several Emmy Awards and nominations for Outstanding Special Class–Short-Format Nonfiction Programs.

His new product line Jay Leno 'S GARAGE ADVANCED VEHICLE CARE launched in December of 2016 and has been well received by the Automotive Industry worldwide.

Jay Leno is currently hosting “YOU BET YOUR LIFE” and the second season returned in Fall 2022. This comedy game show is co-hosted by Jay's longtime Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks and features strangers teaming up to answer a series of trivia questions with the goal of winning thousands of dollars.

When he's not on TV, Leno performs more than 100 stand-up shows annually across the country and internationally, participates in numerous charity and corporate events, does voice-overs for animated series, pens children's books, and writes a monthly column in various automotive magazines. And in his “spare” time (as if he has any), he enjoys working on his collection of classic cars and motorcycles. In fact, he has built a number of cars, including an acclaimed eco-car in his eco-friendly green garage.

Leno is the recipient of many honors, including Emmy, People's Choice, and TV Guide awards, Harris Poll selection as most popular star on television, the Hasty Pudding Award at Harvard University, The Mark Twain Prize, recipient of the Patriot Award given by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society , a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and being the first person to drive the pace car of all major NASCAR events.

He and his wife Mavis, an ardent human rights activist, live in Los Angeles.

Arsenio Hall became a household name with the success of his Emmy Award-winning late-night talk show “The Arsenio Hall Show.” The versatile actor, comedian and producer first became involved in the arts at “The Cleveland Playhouse” and continued to hone his craft through his Kent State University years.

In 1979, Hall moved from Ohio to Chicago, Illinois where he tried his hand at stand-up comedy and was discovered by jazz singer Nancy Wilson . In the following few years Arsenio toured, he opened for twenty major headliners including Patti LaBelle , Aretha Franklin , Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder . Hall attempted to diversify his career by making numerous appearances on television shows such as “Solid Gold” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson ” and doing his first film cameo in “Amazon Women on the Moon.” In 1987, Hall was asked to replace Joan Rivers on the Fox Network series “The Late Show.” On the strength of his work as interim host, he was signed to a film and television deal with Paramount Pictures, which subsequently led to the opportunity to co-write and co-star in the hit comedy “Coming to America.”

On January 3, 1989, “The Arsenio Hall Show” made its debut. Virtually overnight, Arsenio changed the face of late-night television by captivating young viewers across the country. During his successful five-year run as Executive Producer, Arsenio provided a forum for cutting edge comedy, politics and the television debut of pop superstars.

Arsenio was featured as the comical “Carl Cristall” in Exodus Films' animated feature “Igor,” and was featured in the HBO Sports Documentary “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals.” In 2013, Hall returned to late-night television as executive producer and host of the CBS Television Distribution/Tribune Broadcasting nationally syndicated “The Arsenio Hall Show,” which aired on stations around the country during the 2013 - 2014 season. He also appeared in a cameo role in Adam Sandler 's ‘90s set Netflix comedy film “Sandy Wexler.” In 2017, Arsenio was featured Monday mornings as co-host of the popular nationally syndicated radio program “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and also appeared on the ABC comedy “The Mayor.” He recently enjoyed a triumphant return to his first love of stand-up comedy performing at venues across the country and released his current Netflix stand-up special “Smart & Classy” which can be streamed in various countries across the world.

Most recently, Arsenio brought back his talk show for a 4-night run during the Netflix is a Joke festival in Los Angeles. He can be seen reprising his role as Semmi and other surprise characters in Amazon Prime's Coming 2 America now streaming.

While the critical amongst us could say that the McLaren Elva is little more than a 720S Spider without a windshield, it is certainly much rarer, more expensive, and offers even better performance.

We’ve seen a number of reviews of the car over recent months and to ring in 2022, none other than Jay Leno had the opportunity to sample it. Leno is a noted McLaren enthusiast and has owned a P1 since new. He was also among the first outside of the British automaker to put the P1 through its paces when it was launched.

The headline figures of the Elva include a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that churns out 804 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. This gives the Elva more power than even the extreme 765LT. Making it all the more impressive is the fact that it is the lightest car in McLaren’s range, tipping the scales at less than 1,198 kg (2,641 lbs). Drive is sent to the rear wheels and it can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 3 seconds and 124 mph (200 km/h) in under 6.7 seconds.

While taking a tour of the Elva , Leno speaks with the chief engineer behind the supercar, Andrew Kay. The duo speak about the philosophy of the car which McLaren says is very much a race car first and a road car second. Kay acknowledges that it isn’t the type of vehicle you would take on a long roadtrip.

Towards the end of the video, the duo put on their sunglasses and head out onto the street. Leno is obviously very impressed with the performance and is an especially big fan of the Active Air Management System that uses a carbon fiber deflector on the hood to direct air over the cockpit.

Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis Leno , were all smiles at the Los Angeles premiere of Unfrosted on Tuesday evening.

Just weeks after the 74-year-old comedian was granted conservatorship of the joint estate he shares with Mavis, 77, amid her dementia battle, the couple attended the red carpet event in support of Jerry Seinfeld 's new Netflix film -- which hits the streaming platform on May 3 -- and shared an update on how they are doing these days.

"I feel great," Mavis told ET's Kevin Frazier as she waited for her husband of 44 years to join the interview.

The philanthropist smiled and laughed, leaning on Jay as he explained why they decided to make a date night out of the Unfrosted premiere.

"Thought I'd come to something fun for a change," the former late-night host joked. "Everything is so controversial. Just to come to a funny, silly movie -- it's great. I think people will have a great time."

As for their enduring love, Jay says that the key is being with his best friend and spending as much time together as they can.

"Well, we hang out every day," he said of their close relationship. "We have a great time. 44 years [married], so we're doing good."

Their love has only been fortified further in recent months after Jay filed for conservatorship of their joint estate back in January . At the time, he asked a Los Angeles judge to grant him his bid so that he could "structure her living trust and other estate plans" in the event that he should die before her.

In court docs obtained by ET, Jay and his lawyers wrote that the estate conservatorship -- a different kind of petition than one that would grant him authority over her person and health -- was necessary as her condition continued to rapidly decline.

"Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years," one filing read. "Jay is fully capable of continuing support for Mavis' physical and financial needs, as he has throughout their marriage," but her "current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan."

A month after that news first emerged, ET obtained documents pertaining to Jay's conservatorship petition, in which Mavis' court-appointed legal counsel, Ronald Ostrin, urged the court to grant the bid. In the filing, Ostrin wrote that he had vetted Mavis' advanced form of dementia and spoken with doctors who provided context surrounding the severity of her condition.

The court-appointed legal counsel for Mavis wrote that her neurologist, Dr. Hart Cohen, said she "sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth." According to Dr. Cohen, Mavis often has "a lot of disorientation" and "ruminates about her parents who have both passed and her mother who died about 20 years ago."

Dr. Cohen -- a neurologist at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles -- also told Ostrin that Jay "loves his wife very much" and "treats [Mavis] like gold." He further contended that the former host of the Tonight Show waited to bring about a conservatorship of the estate "out of respect to her."

Ultimately, Judge Brenda Penny -- the same judge who oversaw Brittney Spears' estate battle -- sided with Jay and Ostrin and granted the conservatorship in early April. In a hearing at the time, Ostrin said that he believed Mavis would be taken care of by her husband under the order.

"She is very blessed. [H]aving had a mother of my own with dementia, Mrs. Leno is living in the least restrictive environment and being very well taken care of. They have a good plan of strategy," Ostrin said.

Penny agreed, telling Jay, who appeared via Zoom, "I know this is a hard time when this needs to happen, and I thank you."

Jay politely responded, "Thank you, your honor."

In the weeks since that last update, the couple has kept out of the public eye, even forgoing any major birthday celebrations for the Emmy Award winner, who turned 74 on April 28. Jay and Mavis -- who do not have any children -- told ET at the Unfrosted premiere that they are not big birthday people.

"We just have each other," said Mavis.

"My life is a party anyway," added her husband. "Every day is a good day."

That party has been going since the mid-1970s when they first started dating. Back in 2014, Jay spoke with ET at a Television Academy Hall of Fame event and attested to the strength of their decades-long marriage, saying that after 34 years, he had no regrets.

"I would do exactly the same thing, I would marry the same person," he said. "I'd do everything the same exactly."
