A trip to Amritsar must include a visit to the Wagah Border of India. It’s the boundary separating India from its neighbour Pakistan. And every evening, at sunset, a flag ceremony is held here, following which the gates are closed for the day.

This Wagah Border Retreat ceremony is no less spellbinding than a theatrical play. Soldiers march in sync and bring down the national flag ritualistically.

Before the event, women and kids dance to patriotic songs, increasing the nationalistic fervour among the spectators. From shouts of patriotism to the display of army discipline, Wagah Beating Retreat Ceremony is a moving event.

Thousands of people, including foreign nationals, line up at Wagah Border Attari to watch the show. It’s a show of national pride, and also a source of entertainment for everyone.

Where is Wagah Border located?

Wagah Border is on the Grand Trunk Road. Wagah is a village in Pakistan on the way to Lahore. The Wagah Border with Pakistan is about 30 km from Amritsar, near Attari village in India.

History of Wagah Border Amritsar

Wagah border history goes back to when British rulers left the Indian subcontinent in 1947. It came into existence as the country was divided into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Wagah Border between India and Pakistan is an army outpost today.

Relations between the two countries have been tense throughout. But the daily ceremony has been in practice by the army since 1959. Attari-Wagah is also one of the main access points to Pakistan.

The show is jam-packed with patriotic and enthusiastic Indians. All cheer the soldiers and sing the national anthem as the event ends.

1. Enjoy the Beating Retreat ceremony – Beating Retreat is the focus of a Wagah Border tour. The Beating Retreat ceremony is a once-in-a-lifetime entertaining experience. You can enjoy a choreographed parade between the soldiers of India and Pakistan during the event. And the songs, dance and loud cheers can fill anyone with a patriotic spirit.

2. Get a peek into Khalsa College – On the way to the Attari-Wagah Border crossing, you pass by Khalsa College. It’s an ideal mix of British, Mughal and Sikh architectural styles. You can get a good look at the building from the road itself. To explore this magnificent building, step into the sprawling campus and get permission from the college staff.

3. Visit War Memorial & Museum – It’s another splendid place to visit on the way. It showcases the rich history of Punjab and the brave hearts of Punjab who participated in different wars. The gallery contains numerous illustrations, artefacts and weapons. You can also see a 45-metre stainless steel sword commemorating the martyred Sikh soldiers.

4. Explore Pul Kanjari village – Pul Kanjari is a historical village near the border. It has a war memorial and a heritage site from the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. You can also see the border fences from the village across the green fields. Visiting Pul Kanjari is a surreal experience.

5. Have a traditional Punjabi dinner – After the ceremony, stop by a local restaurant for an authentic Punjabi meal. You can also check out Sadda Pind resort for a more traditional experience. It’s a themed resort where you can enjoy fun games and dine in a classic Punjabi village setup.

Wagah Border Ceremony Details

The Wagah Border parade ceremony is a 30-minute event. The event begins with a parade. It’s performed by soldiers of both countries: The Indian Border Security Force and the Pakistan Rangers. Soldiers march by lifting their legs as high as possible.

The soldiers for Wagah Border march past are carefully chosen. And they’re trained specially for the Beating Retreat ceremony. Each soldier treats it with absolute seriousness and keeps their movements coordinated.

The ceremony is an elaborate show of power and friendship. Prior to it, women and children wave the national flag and dance to patriotic songs. Spectators cheer them with loud calls of “Jai Hind” and “Vande Mataram.”

And following the parade, the flags of both nations are lowered in perfect sync. As the flags are lowered and folded, the border gate is opened.

The ceremony ends with a brief handshake between soldiers from both sides. Then, the gate, and thus the border, is formally closed until sunrise. People stand in their place to sing the National Anthem and applaud the army. You can feel a sense of pride filling the environment.

Wagah Border Timings and Entry Fees

Wagah Border visiting hours are from 10 AM to 4 PM. The ceremony timing is 4.15 PM (in winter) and 5.15 PM (in summer). And the entry begins at around 2-3 PM. Seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

You don’t need to buy any entry passes or tickets.

It’s a formal event between two nations you can experience on any day, including holidays. Entry is closed sometimes when the relations between the two countries are cold.

Best time to visit Wagah Border Amritsar

It’s best to plan a visit to Wagah Border Amritsar in the winter months. Winter starts around November and lasts until march. It’s the best time for outdoor activities in winter. The weather remains comfortable throughout the day.

Time to explore Wagah Border Amritsar

The Wagah Border evening ceremony lasts for about 45 minutes. Also, you should arrive early to get the best seats. So, you'll need around 2-3 hours for the ceremony. You can even plan a day trip to Wagah Border and explore other places on the way.

Things to keep in mind when visiting Wagah Border

• Entry might be closed sometimes due to political reasons.
• Arrive at least an hour early for the ceremony.
• Keep an ID card (passport, if available) with you.

By bus – You can get a Wagah Border bus easily from Amritsar. Most buses stop at Attari, from where you’ll need to take an auto-rickshaw or cycle-rickshaw to the entry gate.

By taxi/cab – You can book taxis from the top car rentals in Amritsar to visit Wagah Border Amritsar. They’re the best way to visit the place. You can also hire a Wagah Border cab for the day and visit all the tourist places nearby.

Wagah Border, Amritsar Overview

Located at a distance of 22 km from Lahore, Pakistan and 28 km from Amritsar in India, the Wagah Border marks the boundaries between Indian and Pakistani borders, running along the Grand Trunk Road. Wagah Border parade timings vary during summers and winters. In summers, the parade starts at 5:15 PM while during winters it starts at 4:15 PM. The ceremony lasts for 45 minutes. However, the Wagah attari border entrance is open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, so its best to visit the place atleast 1 hour before parade as everyone do not get to attend the ceremony easily.

Wagah Border : Beating The Retreat Ceremony

Our Journey to the Wagah Border began in the vibrant city of Amritsar.  I had seen footage of the Wagah Border Ceremony many years earlier, watching Michael Palin’s travels through the Himalayan countries and I knew that if we ever visited Amritsar then this unique ceremony would be a must.

I had no idea what to expect, I did remember that there had been tensions at the border over the years and honestly wasn’t sure that it would be safe to visit the Wagah Border.  However, what we learned was :

• Yes it is currently safe
• It’s a must see ceremony for anyone visiting the Punjab regions in Pakistan or India
• It’s easy to visit from Amritsar

Read on and we’ll share with you what we learned and help you work this trip into your Amritsar Itinerary because it’s a unique experience that you will not wish to miss. 

Where Is The Attari-Wagah Border?

The Attari-Wagah Border is a land border crossing between India and Pakistan, located near the towns of Attari on the Indian side and Wagah on the Pakistani side.

The crossing is 30 kilometres from the Golden Temple and the centre of Amritsar and 27 kilometres from Lahore. It is the only road border crossing between the two nations. 

Known as the Radcliffe Line, the border was decided by Sir Cyril Radcliffe, a British lawyer, in 1947. It was an arbitrary line that divided the Punjab province and the Indian subcontinent into two independent nations; India and Pakistan.

The actual Attari-Wagah Border wasn’t created until 1948, after India and Pakistan separated and gained independence. When we visited the Partition Museum in Amritsar there was a display which suggested that two soldiers arrived at the designated border and determined where the actual line would exist.  They drew a line in the earth and marked it with two oil barrels (which apparently still exist, although we didn’t see them).

What Is The Wagah Border Parade?

The Attari-Wagah Border Parade is a must-see spectacle if you are visiting near either Amritsar in India or Lahore in Pakistan.

Relations between the two countries are oft times tense but the daily Beating the Retreat ceremony has been in practice by the army since 1959 and has grown to symbolise the complex but nonetheless important relationship between the two countries.

The Wagah Border Parade is a daily military ceremony with colourful and energetic displays of patriotism and national pride and offers a fabulous opportunity to witness both the unique camaraderie and rivalry between these two neighbouring nations.

As the sun sets over the border, an elaborate display of power much like peacocks displaying their feathers, the ceremony includes much singing, children waving national flags, women dancing to patriotic songs, soldiers marching and spectators cheering with calls of Jai Hind (long live India) and Vande Mataram (praise you motherland).

You’ll witness much posturing, fast paced walks and high kicks.  It’s like nothing we’d ever seen, sometimes a little camp, other times akin to John Cleese and his ministry of silly walks.  However, don’t be fooled. This ceremony is far from silly.

Behind the show, the soldiers are specially trained and they treat their role with absolute seriousness.  Their movements are highly choreographed for maximum effect and precision.  This is not a pantomime, regardless of the atmosphere, the soldiers themselves take great pride in their performance.  The Attari-Wagah Border Ceremony has huge cultural significance on both sides of the border and an energy that defines this patriotic spectacle.

Attari-Wagah Border Ceremony Times

The Wagah Border ceremony is a daily military exercise that the Border Security Forces of both India (Border Security Force) and Pakistan (Pakistan Rangers) have followed since 1959.

Whilst you can visit Wagah Border daily between 10:00am and 16:00pm, the Beating Retreat Ceremony takes place just before sunset.  The times of the Border Ceremony change depending on the season :

• 4:15 PM in Winter
• 5:15 PM in Summer

Your hotel or tour guide will tell you the timing of the ceremony and what time you need to arrive to ensure you get your seat.  During peak season it’s very busy and you will need to arrive early, so do make allowances for this in your schedule.

How To Get To The Wagah Border From Amritsar?

We visited the Wagah Border from Amritsar, we’ve been told that there are tours and taxis offering similar transport options on the Pakistan side of the border but we can’t personally confirm this.

There are several transport options for visiting the Wagah Border, depending on your budget.  We initially booked a tour but our hotel offered us a driver and the cost was 1500 Rps.

The Attari-Wagah border is just 30 kilometres from Amritsar but with city traffic the journey can take a while.  Your driver will know the best time to leave the city, so make sure you follow his advice and arrive at the pick-up point on time.

Amritsar To Wagah Border Bus

There is a hop-on hop-off bus that you can take from the centre of Amritsar.  It’s a very affordable option and the bus also can take you to other destinations within the city.  But the bus does get very crowded and a seat isn’t guaranteed.  If you wish to use this option then make sure you arrive early to grab your place.

Amritsar To Wagah Border Taxi

As you walk around Amritsar there are many many taxis and tuk-tuks offering rides to the airport and the Border.  Personally we found them expensive and I would suggest that you ask your hotel for their recommended taxi.

You can use UBER but you will want to be sure that your driver is waiting for you at the end of the ceremony.  For this reason we recommend either an organised tour or a taxi booked through your hotel.  The cost for a one-way taxi should be around 750 RPS.

This journey is hugely popular so taxis are very used to making this journey; probably every day.

Amritsar To Attari-Wagah Train

Whilst there has historically been a train running between India and Pakistan, the Samjhauta Express was suspended in 2019 following increased tensions and security concerns at the border.

Today the closest train station is Amritsar. 

Amritsar To Wagah Border Tuk-Tuk

It is possible to book a tuk tuk to take you to the border and this is a great option if your budget is tight; especially if you can share with others.  You will need to allow plenty of time to reach the border and make plans to ensure a driver is waiting or available for you when the ceremony is over. 

A tuk-tuk will cost around 400 RPS for a one way trip. 

Wagah Border Ceremony Guided Tours

Before leaving home we booked this tour to the Attari-Wagah Border .  I knew that the Border Ceremony was a must-see attraction for us, I’d read that these tours sell very quickly and I wanted to be absolutely sure that we had a driver booked.

The cost for this tour is very reasonable and you have the advantage of arriving with a driver who acts as your guide.  They will walk you through the security area and lead you to the entrance where foreign nationals can enter without queueing.  The driver/guide makes the entire process so easy that I do recommend this option.

As a bonus you also get to visit Khalsa College and the original Attari Village. And you’ll be collected and returned to your hotel in the same vehicle so you can safely leave bags in the car.

Best Time To Visit The Wagah Border?

There is no best time to visit to the Attari-Wagah Border.  The flags are lowered every day but of course, sometimes the ceremony is busier than others and sometimes the weather will be a factor.

We visited in November and the weather was just about perfect.  Not to hot and not too cold.  Winter starts around November and lasts until March,  The temperature is comfortable throughout the day and cooler in the evenings.

The Punjab is hot in the summer and the stadium is quite exposed so if you go in warmer days make sure you take sun hats and sunscreen (and plenty of water).  The rainy season is July and August and as umbrellas will not be allowed in the stadium, we recommend taking a waterproof coat or poncho.

Do You Need Tickets For The Wagah Border Parade?

You do not need tickets ; it’s first come first serve and no seats are allocated. However, foreign visitors are given the VIP treatment and you skip the queue and are escorted to a special area closer the border gates. 

I recommend that within this VIP area, if possible, you choose to sit further away from the border gates. You’ll get a better view of both sides of the border, although there is a big screen to ensures you don’t miss the action.

How Much Does The Wagah Border Ceremony Cost?

The entrance is free .  You pay for the guide or transport only.

There are opportunities to buy Indian flags, hats, snacks and drinks before you enter the stadium.  We bought a small flag and it was great to be able to wave along with everyone else.

Security For The Wagah Border Parade

When we visited it was safe.  It felt safe.  However there have been times when this is not the case.  There has been a terrorist attack and security is always taken very seriously. 

In 2014, 60 people were killed and another 110 injured in a suicide attack on the Pakistan side of border.  In 2016, following military confrontation between the two nations, whilst the border closing ceremony continued, members of the public where not allowed to attend. 

Following the terrorist attack security was increased and you should expect strict screening before you are allowed to enter the area.

Is It Safe To Visit The Wagah Border In India?

This is a question that can only be answered at the time of your visit. But for us, we felt very safe.  Indeed, safety was not a concern at all.  It felt like a carnival. 

The Attari Wagah Border parade is a huge tourist attraction and on the Indian side there is a 25,000 seat stadium.   If there is any doubt on security, your hotel or guide will know in advance.  But safety concerns are extremely rare and safety was not an issue for us when we visited.

However, I do suggest that you keep an eye on your belongings as pick-pockets are not unheard of.

What To Take To The Wagah Border Ceremony 

Bags are not allowed.  Security is taken very seriously and you cannot enter with a bag.  Instead, carry a few personal items in your pocket or your hands.  You will go through screening before you enter but we had sunscreen, water, passports, money, our phones and a camera.

You will need to show your passport at the security check-point and again as you enter the stadium.  Make sure you take them as you will not be allowed to enter without. Gerry kept ours in his money belt for security and ease of carrying.

There are opportunities to buy inexpensive souvenirs and items like flags and hats.  There are also street food stalls, popcorn and soft drink stands.  We took water with us and we bought popcorn, and a flag, which came in handy during the celebrations.

If you wish to make any of purchases it will be much easier if you carry smaller notes , as no-one ever has change; indeed this is true throughout India!

It is ok to take a camera and a phone. I took my camara and had no issues. 

There seemed to be no restriction on the photos that you could take, although at the very end of the show as we were leaving, one of the security staff moved me along saying ‘no photos’.  I can’t even remember what the photo was and I think he was more intent in moving us on, than the photo I was taking. 

It was also ok use your smartphone although don’t expect a phone signal as they are blocked at the border.

Prohibited Items : What NOT To Take To The Wagah Border Ceremony

Security at the border is taken very seriously.  You will go through a security check-point before you are allowed into the stadium and your passport will be checked.  There are some items that are never permitted and they will be taken from you or you will be turned away if you are carrying them.

• Bags : Bags are not allowed and are restricted to help make crowd movement more manageable and for security concerns.  Take what you need in your hand.  We carried a camera, phone, a bottle of water and sunscreen.  Leave your bag in the car or in your hotel.
• Alcohol, Cigarettes, Drugs, Matches or Lighters : None of these items are allowed and the consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
• Knives, Scissors or any Sharp Object : It goes without saying that these are not allowed.  In the unlikely event that you’d have something like this in your pocket be aware that you’ll lose it or be turned away. 
• Power Bank/Charging Wires/Electrical Items :  It’s generally a good idea to leave all electronic gadgets behind; they may be picked up during the security checks and not allowed.  Smartphones and a Camera is ok but nothing more.
• Outside Food and Drinks : We took water and you can buy food within the complex.  We were advised to take nothing else. 
• Cameras with Large Lenses :  For security reasons  professional-grade lenses may be prohibited, along with tripods.  This is partly for security and partly to assist with crowd control and safety.  I had a small zoom lens on my camera; it was visible at all times (around my neck) and I had no issues.   
• Fireworks or Firecrackers : The use of fireworks or firecrackers is not allowed.
• Flags or Banners :  I have read that flags may be restricted although we did buy an India flag once inside the security area.  It has been suggested that large flags could obstruct viewing of others which is why they are not allowed, but I suspect it is also to prevent any unwanted or inappropriate messages during this joyous parade.
• Laser Pointers : For obvious reasons these are not allowed and will be confiscated.
• Drones :  The use of drones or other aerial devices is prohibited for both security and safety concerns.
• Political or Controversial Materials :  The Border Ceremony reflects both the tensions and the Camaraderie between Pakistan and India.  For obvious reasons, political or controversial materials will be prohibited.  
• Large objects : Items such as umbrellas, sticks, or other large objects which could cause a disturbance maybe prohibited. If you need a walking stick this would be acceptable but taking an umbrella may not be.
• Hazardous materials : Any items considered hazardous, such as explosives, flammable substances, or sharp objects, are strictly prohibited.

This may seems like a large list but security and safety is at the forefront of the authorities concerns; it should be seen as a positive move that safety is taken so seriously.

My advice would be keep things simple.  Take your phone or camera.  Take some water and sunscreen.  Take a hat if it’s very sunny, a coat if it’s chilly.  We had no issues going through security and if you stick with the rules you’ll be fine too.

How Do You Find Your Seats At The Wagah Border?

There are no allocated seats.  Once we passed through security our driver walked us to the main entrance; he didn’t go in with us but we didn’t need him at this stage.  We showed our passports again and we were directed to the VIP area.  We’re not VIPs but all foreign visitors are directed to a separate seating area. 

Don’t worry.  The stadium is large but you’ll be directed to the place you need to be.  Inside the stadium there are soldiers and security staff directing; it is impossible to go to the wrong area. 

Once at the VIP area you will be directed to your seats.  It is hard to get this wrong as there are so many folks there to assist.

Top Tip : Once in the VIP area, choose a seat furthest away from the border gates.  You may not have a choice (we didn’t) and in reality it doesn’t make a huge difference but if you can choose, don’t opt to be right beside the border.  Sitting further away makes it easier to see what happens on the Pakistan side of the border.  However, don’t worry, there are huge screens around the stadium, so you won’t miss anything.

What To Expect At The Wagah Border Ceremony

I wasn’t sure how much to include here; I don’t wish to spoil the surprise.  So instead, here are a few things you should expect :

• Expect crowds and expect to arrive early and wait in your seat. 
• Don’t expect to pick up a mobile phone signal.
• Expect food and drinks to be available within the complex and expect Indian memorabilia like small flags and hats for sale.
• Expect music, ceremonial uniforms, and much dancing. 
• Expect an opportunity for ladies to join the throng and go sing and dance with the crowd. 
• Expect a Master of Ceremony, who will encourage cheers and singing and shouts.
• Expect elaborate dance-like manoeuvres with high kicks, patriotic music and cheering crowds with  considerable pomp on both sides of the border.
• Expect a joyful camaraderie and festive atmosphere with considerable national pride and flag waving!
• Expect to be asked to remain seated. If you’re standing you’ll be asked you to sit down.
• Expect a huge crowd as you leave. Make sure you arrange in advance where you will meet your driver. 

It’s no secret that we absolutely loved this event.  It was such a surprise.  I had some idea of what to expect but Gerry had none.  It was joyous and fun and should be a must for anyone visiting the area.

How Long Does The Wagah Border Ceremony Last?

We left our hotel in Amritsar at 3pm sharp and we returned around 7:30pm.  In summer the sunset is later and the crowds are bigger so you should expect timings to adjust to reflect this.

The actual parade lasts for around 45 minutes, but the singing starts much earlier and the entire show lasts for well over an hour. 

After The Wagah Border Parade Finishes

When the parade is over, and flags have been lowered and borders closed, people will rapidly start to leave their seats.  The solders and security staff do an excellent job of keeping people moving little by little, without causing a rush.  Follow their lead.

When we visited in November, I would guess the stadium was only 70% full but it is often 100% full with folks being turned away. There is a slow and steady stream of people leaving the stadium and the exit is very orderly. 

We agreed a spot with our driver and he was there waiting.  Do make sure that you are very clear where you’ll meet as there aren’t too many defining features on the walk back to the car park.

We bought popcorn and a drink on the way back to the car.  Just as with the exit from the stadium, the car exit was also well managed although there was some inevitable waiting.

We arrived back in Amritsar at around 7:30pm in time for dinner. (We even had time to return to the Golden Temple to watch the Book Closing Ceremony).

The History And Significance of the Wagah Border Parade And Spectacular Ceremony

The Attari-Wagah Border is an historic demarcation that witnessed heart-wrenching events during the partition in 1947.  Its story is deeply intertwined with the tumultuous partition of India in 1947 and the enduring political complexities between these two nations.  Whilst today, this border is known for is dazzling Wagah Border Ceremony, its history is much darker.

The arbitrary drawing of borders led to mass migrations and it is estimated that 18 million people were displaced. Attari and Wagah, two neighbouring villages on either side of the line, became separated into different conflicting nations when the Punjab was split in two. 

In five short weeks citizens had to move to or from their homes to their new countries; Muslims to Pakistan and Hindu and Sikh communities to India. There was appalling and widespread violence with over a million people losing their lives. Wagah, once a sleepy village, became a symbol of the painful division that left an indelible mark on this subcontinent.

The Attari-Wagah Border is more than a geographic boundary.  It serves as a poignant reminder of the shared history and conflict between the people of both nations and also carries a message of peace and reconciliation.

There has always been a lowering of the flags ceremony at the border.  We were told that it was once a simple lowering of flags at sunset, much like any military barracks around the world.  Over time, people came and sat on the grassy banks around the border and watched; the crowds and the ceremony grew.

Now, and almost every day since 1959, the Beating Retreat Ceremony has been performed and grown into the elaborate display we can see today.

Given the history of this border, the ceremony is a symbolic gesture of two nations’ need for a peaceful coexistence.   Tensions often run high and there have been times when the ceremony has been suspended.  Flags may still be lowered at sunset, without the pomp and the public are not allowed to watch.

Despite the underlying tensions, the Wagah Border Ceremony offers a chance to witness the unique camaraderie among spectators from on both sides along with their military. Cheers, applause, and good-natured banter creates a wonderful lively atmosphere.

Fun Fact : The flagpoles on the border are amongst the tallest in the world.  The Indian flagpole in Attari is currently 18 feet taller than its Pakistan counterpart in neighbouring Wagah. While the Pakistani flagpole reaches a height of 400 feet, the Indian flagpole is 418 feet in height.  My guess is that the Pakistan Flagpole will soon be made taller to match its ‘twin’ on the Indian side of the border.

Our Tips For Visiting The Wagah Border

I hope my enthusiasm for this event shines through.  Despite the serious political nature of the border between India and Pakistan, this ceremony is wonderful and at all times we felt safe.  If you are visiting the Punjab then I thoroughly recommend a visit.  And if you’re in Amritsar then it’s so easy to work this into your itinerary.

Our top tips for visiting the Wagah Border Ceremony include :

• Book a taxi or a tour in advance; it’s not expensive and the extra hand-holding from the guide is worth it
• Arrive at least 1 hour before the ceremony to get a good seat although foreign visitors are given their own VIP area.
• Carry your passport .
• Do not bring a bag and keep what you carry to bare essentials , camera or phone, sunscreen and water.
• Be respectful of the soldiers and the national flags and people of both countries.
• Join in the fun ; dance and sing and just relax and watch the event unfold.

Updated 2020 from my second visit: Amritsar in Punjab is not a city that all travellers visit, especially on their first trip to India but if you want to see more than the cities of Rajasthan, Amritsar has to be on your North India itinerary!

What to do in Amritsar? Is what I’m sure you’re thinking. Well, there’s not that many things to do in Amritsar so you don’t need that long in Amritsar as it’s only a small city in terms of the tourism center. 1-2 days and 2 nights is enough time in Amritsar.

Tips for visiting the Golden Temple in Amritsar

The Golden Temple, also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib is one of the most important Sikh Temples in the World , because of this up to 100,000 people can visit per day on busy days and it is mainly visited by Indian tourists and Sikh people around the world!

Where is the Golden Temple in Amritsar? 

t’s located right in the middle of the tourist part of the city at the top of Golden Temple Road and you really can’t miss it!

How much does it cost to visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

Entrance is free however there are donation boxes around the temple and seen as you usually have to pay to go into monuments and temples in India you may feel like leaving a donation.

When is the best time to visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

I’d say the morning and the evening so you can avoid the crowds in the middle of the day and the heat. The Golden Temple in Amritsar’s opening hours is nearly all day. Online it varies but it’s said that it’s open from 4:30 am to 11:00 pm. In fact, you really should try and see the temple during the day and at night and it’s totally different in both lights.

What to wear in the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

Knees must be covered, even men with shorts above the knees should try to wear something longer. Shoulders are allowed out but I’d say you’re best off wearing a t-shirt. You need to cover your head but they provide head scarfs at the entrance to the temple or you can take your own. You need to take your shoes off too and there is free and safe storage at each entrance.

Can you take photos inside the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

Yes, there are no restrictions on cameras, but of course, be mindful that this is a holy place and people are bathing in the water who may not want to be on camera.

What is there to do in the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

As a tourist, the thing to do in the Golden Temple is to walk around the lake and observe what is happening. Inside the lake is that actual Golden Temple. You will most likely see huge queues to get in here because it is where the Holy Book is kept. As a tourist and non-Sikh you’ll most likely not want to queue to go in and that’s fine.

Another popular attraction at the Golden Temple in Amritsar is to watch the ceremony of ‘putting the book to bed’ where the book is taken from the Golden Temple and put away at about 22:00 each night. The other thing you must do in the temple is to go to the langar kitchen and there are tips on that below!

Can you stay overnight at Amritsar’s Golden Temple?

Yes, you can. This is mainly for Sikh people and a lot of people do stay overnight but you can also stay overnight and help volunteer as a non-Sikh and foreigner.

Tips for visiting the Golden Temple Kitchen / Langar Hall, Amritsar

Where is the kitchen in the golden temple in amritsar.

The Golden Temple kitchen is called the Langar Hall , it is accessed from inside the temple where the Ramgarhia Bunga is. As you enter the main entrance of the Golden Temple it is on the next side to your left as you walk around to the left. You’ll see a yellow sign pointing you to the Langar Hall at the entrance.

What time does the kitchen serve food in the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

The kitchen is open 24 hours which is incredible so you can go any time of day. You may arrive just as a seating is starting and need to wait for the next seating but generally, it’s very quick. Remember they can serve up to 100,000 people in here a day !

Is the food in the Golden Temple in Amritsar free?

Yes, the meal here is totally free! But again, if you wish to leave a donation there are boxes as you walk out and where you hand in your dirty plate.

What food do they serve in the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

The food is all vegetarian and from my experience (visiting 3 times!) you are given 2 roti’s, daal, curry and a rice pudding type dish, plus water (but as a foreigner I’d suggest being careful of this, I’m not sure if it’s filtered), and they come round offering you more if you’re still hungry! It’s a healthy and delicious meal.

How do you get food at the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

You go where the yellow sign points you, walk through some water, on your left you’ll see the building where people are handing out plates, bowls and spoons, get all 3 and follow the crowds either upstairs or to the right to a room downstairs. You may need to wait to go in or you’ll go in straight away. Take a seat on the floor and wait for the food to be brought to you!

I was a bit intimidated going on my own the first time, especially as the queue was big, everyone was pushing to get in and I was the only foreigner. I doubted whether it was worth it, but I sat down, surrounded by Indian families and the actual eating experience was really peaceful and nice and I did not feel uncomfortable at all.

BOOKING TRAINS IN INDIA

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. For an EASY option of booking trains in India use 12GO to search and book trains really easily. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

BEST ACCOMMODATION IN INDIA

I always use Booking.com to book my hotels in India and Hostelworld to book my hostels . India has a great range of accommodation with brilliant hostel chains like Moustache, Zostel and Backpacker Panda as well as homestays to luxury hotels.

How to do a kitchen tour in the Golden Temple in Amritsar?

You may have seen YouTube videos where people go inside the kitchens on a langer food tour to see where the food is made which looks like an incredible experience because they cook such huge quantities of food, and this kitchen is said to be the most organised kitchen in the world which can be seen in the washing up process especially! I read each plate is washed 5 times to ensure good hygiene standards.

If there’s a group of you I believe you can prebook a kitchen tour by contacting them in advance. Alternatively, a guy I met in my hostel went in a group of a few foreigners and they offered them a tour after they’d eaten. I think the people that run the kitchen know that foreigners especially like to look at the kitchen and them so they seem willing to do kitchen tours.

Tips for Visiting the Wagah Border Ceremony from Amritsar

Now onto the Wagah Border, one of the top things to do in Amritsar! Every single evening there is a Ceremony at Wagah Border which is the border between India and Pakistan. It’s also known as the Attari Wagah Border.

The Ceremony is to show rivalry but also brotherhood between the 2 countries and it’s quite an experience so here’s how to visit the Wagah Border from Amritsar!

How to get to the Wagah Border from Amritsar?

The border is about 30KM from Amritsar and about an hours drive. You have a few options to get there:

1. Go with your accommodation. Hostels especially will arrange trips to the border and this is much less expensive if you are travelling solo. GoStops Amritsar Hostel can organise a tuk-tuk for 1000Rs and an air-conditioned car for 1500Rs so you can split the cost but of course this depends on other people joining!

2. Hire your own Tuk Tuk or Taxi. I was quoted 700Rs for a tuk tuk and 3 of us paid 1300Rs for an air-conditioned taxi. The taxi was really nice, it was comfortable, quick and the driver parked so close to the ‘stadium’ whereas the tuk-tuks need to park further back on the road. 

I found a really nice taxi driver in Amritsar, he can take you to the Wagah Border, pick you up from the airport or drop you off, his name is Swaran Singh and his WhatsApp number is +91 98146 50454. I really recommend him and tell him Ellie gave you his details!

3. If you’re on a budget and can’t get anyone to share a tuk-tuk or taxi with you there are plenty of shared rides to the Wagah Border. Outside of the Golden Temple on the Golden Temple Road, you will hear men saying ‘Wagah Border’ over and over again all morning and afternoon.

On my first visit to the Wagah Border I decided to get a seat in a shared car, it was 300Rs in total, 200Rs upfront and 100Rs to be paid on the way back. This was a bit of a nightmare there were loads of us squished in the car and they tried to charge me more on the way back. However, I did meet a nice Indian family and went to the ceremony with them and it was the most budget-friendly option at the time.

Is the Wagah Border Ceremony Free?

Yep! You just need to pay for transport there and snacks if you want any. Popcorn was 100Rs and Ice Cream 50Rs.

What time does the Wagah Border Ceremony start?

The ceremony starts at around 5:00 pm so the best time to leave Amritsar for the Border is 3:00 pm so you can get a good seat. There’s dancing and crowd entertainment before the ceremony starts at 5:00 pm to keep you entertained!

What is allowed in the Wagah Border Ceremony?

No big bags are allowed inside, you can take a very small handbag or bum bag though. With that being said you can take pretty much everything inside apart from food, drinks and battery chargers. You can take your camera, phone, passport and purse in your hands, pocket or a small bag.

In terms of what to take to the Wagah Border Ceremony, I’d recommend a cap if you are sensitive to the sun as the sun is on you for a lot of the ceremony as it sets on the Pakistan side.

Should I bring my passport to the Wagah Border Ceremony?

Yes, it is advised for foreigners to take their passport as there is a foreigner seating section which offers a great view of the gates and you’ll need to show your passport to get in here.

Can I see the Wagah Border Ceremony from Pakistan?

Just like in Amritsar, in Lahore, you can visit the ceremony and sit on the Pakistan side but of course only if you have a visa for Pakistan and visit from Lahore, not from Amritsar!

Things To Do in Amritsar

In regards to other tourist places in Amritsar, there are not that many, the above 3 things are the highlights of things to do in Amritsar however there are 2 other places you should also see:

Jallianwala Bagh  is a public garden with an entrance along Golden Temple Road and inside is a memorial for the people who were massacred by the British in 1919. It is free to enter although it does not take too long to walk around.

The Partition Museum is really interesting, it is the world’s first Partition Museum which was built to document and remember the partition of India and Pakistan. It’s good to understand the history of this area and of Punjab. It costs 250Rs for foreigners to enter.

I'm so glad I found your blog on Amritsar! I am looking to travel there (from Dharamshala) in November this year and will be doing this section alone. I will probably look to arrange a private driver / shared transport between the two places - do you have any thoughts/comments on what the road is like between the two places? Also, do you think it is better to go to the Wagah Border Ceremony independently or as part of an organised tour group? Although I'm well travelled, I guess I'm feeling a little nervous about this part as I really don't know what to expect - did you feel safe? Thanks for your advice :)

Hi Kelly. I’m so glad you found it too. I did it the other way so I got a tourist bus from Amritsar to dharamshala which I’d recommend, you definitely don’t need a private driver but to make it a bit easier I’d recommend a tourist bus over the local bus. It does take a good few hours and is quite windy leaving dharamshala but it’s not too bad. You’ll be able to book the bus online or when you get to dharamshala (side note - I stayed in McLeodganj and loved it there, I have a blog post on the town it you haven’t seen it already :) )

When you get to Amritsar there are loads & loads of people selling transfers to the border, I got squished in the back of a car with an Indian family which wasn’t comfortable but I ended up staying with them and had a great time with them so that was a plus. I’d just wait until you get there and either book a transfer with your accommodation if they offer it or with someone in the street. But you could get a tuk tuk there by yourself and you’ll be totally fine going alone too. It’s a huge crowd that goes but I felt fine there.

I honestly had no issues in this area. Dharamshala is sooo zen (well the mcleodganj & dharamkot area)! I love it and I’ll be going back in October actually, it’s like no where else in India, and Amritsar is nice too. It’s not big at all and the people there are nice. It attracts a lot of Indian tourists of course because of the temple & border so the crowds can get intense but you learn to get used to it and in no way did I feel unsafe!.. just overwhelmed at times but that’s India for you! Lol.

Experience what it is like to stand at the Indo-Pakistan border at the iconic Wagah! Here is everything you should know about the Wagah border before you plan to visit it.

 The Wagah border plays a major role in maintaining the diplomatic relationship between India and Pakistan.  Lots of people assume that Wagah is in India, but actually, it is a tiny village in Pakistan. It is a goods transit terminal and a railway station between the countries. However, the main attraction is the Wagah border ceremony! Wagah border is 24 kilometres away from Lahore and 32 kilometres away from Amritsar. Also known as the Attari-Wagah border, citizens from both nations visit the border from their sides to witness the evening ceremony that takes place every day. Attari village is a village in India, three kilometres away from the border. 

What is the historical significance of the Wagah border?  

The border is named after the Wagah village of Pakistan and was created by the Radcliffe Line. The Radcliffe Line was the boundary demarcation created by Cyril Radcliffe , the Britisher who was responsible for defining the boundaries during the partition of India.

What happens at the wagah border ceremony  .

Every day, the border patrols of both nations raise their respective national flags in the morning. In the evening, before the sun sets, the lowering of the flags takes place in an elaborate ceremony with spectators from India and Pakistan. The ceremony is also known as Beating Retreat, and this military practice has been jointly followed by India and Pakistan’s security forces since 1959.  

Before the flag is lowered, the security forces put on a display of showmanship and skill, challenging each other to perform the best. This healthy competition is a symbol of the countries’ history of rivalry and brotherhood. With citizens of both nations cheering for the troops, t he enthusiasm and fervour of an India-Pakistan cricket match are what one experiences during the Wagah border parade ! To watch the disciplined troops in their uniform as they march about the border is truly iconic.  

Indo-Pakistan borders like Mahavir/Sadqi border (near Fazilka) and Ganda Singh Wala (near Firozpur) in Punjab also hold similar ceremonies on the border.

Can people cross the Wagah border from India to Pakistan?  

The border can be used to enter Pakistan from India and vice versa. There are a series of procedures that take place when someone needs to cross the Wagah border. An important thing to remember is that you’ll need an issued visa before attempting to cross borders. Indians also need a visa. They are not granted visa-free entry or a visa on arrival.  

Best time to visit Wagah border:  

The border is open all year round. You can visit it any day of the week between 10 am to 4 pm. However, the parade timings change from season to season according to the sunset timings. In the summer the parade starts at 5:15 pm and in the winter the parade starts at 4:15 pm. It lasts roughly 45 minutes. You don’t need to pay for a ticket to witness the parade, it is open to all. But it is recommended that you reach an hour early so that you can catch good seats and you can be denied entry if there are too many people attending the ceremony on a particular day.  

How to reach the Wagah border:  

As Amritsar is right on the way to the Wagah border, you’ll find most accommodations in the city. Home to the iconic Jallianwala Bagh and the famed Golden Temple, Amritsar is very close to the Indo-Pakistan border.  The Attari-Wagah border is located 32 kilometres away from Amritsar. Reaching Wagah Border is not an easy feat but it can be achieved this way.  

By air  

The Amritsar airport, also known as Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport , is 10.7 kilometres away from the city and takes only 20 minutes to reach by cab. The flight from Delhi to Amritsar is an hour-long journey and it costs around INR 3,000-4,000.  If you are flying from Mumbai, then the journey will be three hour-long and cost around INR 7,000-8,000.   

By train  

Amritsar Junction is the railway station of Amritsar and it is right in the city. The train journey from Delhi is roughly six to seven hours, depending on the train you take. The ticket price range varies from INR 300-1,815. You can also take trains from Mumbai, however, it would take 28 hours to reach and the journey would cost around INR 700-4,500.  

By road  

The border is well connected by roads and it is on the Grand Trunk Road, one the greatest historical roads in Asia. Delhi is 502 kilometres away from the border and driving down takes nine hours. Mumbai is 1,400 kilometres away from the Wagah-Attari border and can take more than two days to reach via road.

Wagah Border India – Parade Timings, How to Reach, Transport and Tips

Amritsar had been high on my “Must Visit Places” list so when I finally got to visit the place, I was looking forward to visiting the holy Golden temple, historic Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and the ‘Beating the retreat ceremony’ between India and Pakistan at Wagah border (Also known as Attari Border Ceremony).

After offering my prayers at the Golden Temple, I returned back to the hostel I was staying at. The hostel staff intimated about the group trip being organized the next day for the Wagah border and I immediately joined in.

So, the next day we began our one hour journey towards the Wagah border in a minibus along with a staff person from the hostel who had frequented this place many times.

The Wagah-Atari border is famous for the ceremony called ‘beating the retreat’ ceremony where the Border Security Force from India and Pakistan Rangers from Pakistan, put up a coordinated show together.

This Post is about my visit to the Attari Wagah Border near Amritsar in Punjab State of India.

If you are in Amritsar, I would highly recommend visiting the Holy Golden Temple.

Where is Wagah Border situated? Wagah border is situated at the borderline of India and Pakistan and is located at a distance of around 32 km from the city of Amritsar on the Grand Trunk road between Lahore and Amritsar From this border, Lahore is just 22 km away. I made it a point to click pictures at the milestone bearing ‘Lahore 22 km’.

What is the Beating the Retreat Ceremony?

The ceremony starts with an intensely fierce parade by the soldiers from both the countries and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations’ flags. It is called the Beating Retreat Border ceremony.

This tradition is being followed since 1959 and displays more of a sportsman spirit rather than a formal ceremony.

Being a person with Army background, I was very excited to watch the whole ceremony. I had deliberately not seen any videos about this ceremony, so I was not sure what exactly to expect. I wanted it to surprise me and so it did.

After walking for a few hundred metres from parking place, we entered the stadium kind of place through a huge gate named ‘Swarn Jayanti Dwaar’.

We reached the stands at 4.15 pm. As we had a VIP pass we got the best seats in the area.

What is VIP Pass for the Wagah Border Ceremony?

When this trip was being finalised, our guide asked if any of us had a family member or friend serving in defence forces.

One of us had a friend serving in Indian Army who was contacted regarding this a day before the trip.

He asked for the details of all of the group members and contacted the authorities for pass.

While on our way to the Wagah border, we stopped midway at a BSF establishment in Khasa.

There, we contacted the officials regarding our pass. We were given a serial number which we intimated to the officials on the entry gate at Wagah border.

No pass is required to attend the parade. VIP pass just helps you with better seating arrangements. Without pass, you would have to sit in unreserved general area.

Participating as the flag bearer at Wagah Border

It was sheer luck that as soon as we entered the stadium, we noticed a lady officer asking girls to queue up. Our guide encouraged us to move fast and join. She had told us earlier that there is a ceremony in the beginning where women get to hold the flag and run in the arena.

Soon, many women lined up behind us.

We were three girls in the group excluding our guide. All three of us were in the first batch of five women given the Indian flag.

They handed one flag to each of us and told us to run till the rope barrier, take a u-turn to the starting place.

We ran with child-like enthusiasm with the song “Meri jaan tiranga hai..’ playing in the background.

After finishing the round, we handed over flags to the officers which were given to the women standing next in line.

This continued for around ten minutes till all the women standing in the line had their chance.

Pro-Tip: If you would like to be a part of this ceremony, I would recommend you to keep an eye on the women officers standing near the entry gate ‘ Swarn Jayanti Dwaar’. This is where they ask lady volunteers to queue up. You won’t be allowed to stroll around or wait near the gate before actually asked to make a line. So, as soon as you notice any such movement, just run and join in.

Any female can volunteer for this but I didn’t notice any child running with the flag. The length and weight of the flag could be the reason for this.

I was elated with this experience but it seemed unfair that males could not participate. I really felt bad for the male members of our group. When we returned to our seats, they showed us our pictures and videos they had captured while we were having fun. It was so unfair to them.

Dancing & Singing at Wagah Atari Border

On the Indian side, a BSF officer anchored the whole show and kept the energy and fervour high among the visitors.

Females in the stands were invited by him to dance together in the arena and I was not going to miss this opportunity.

Along with young girls, many older women dressed in bright colourful attires joined in and showed some traditional dance moves.

The energy and zeal was contagious. People in the stands were not able to stop themselves from dancing at their seats when songs like ‘Jai Ho’, ‘India wale’, ‘Sabse aage honge hindustani’ were played back to back.

The Pakistani Side of Wagah Border: As seen from Indian Side

Visitors sitting on the other side of the border (in Pakistan) could be easily seen from this side.

The crowd on the Indian side outnumbered the crowd on the Pakistani side.

A man was beating the ‘dhol’ to cheer up the crowd on that side.

After this, a group of Indian soldiers marched down to the stadium and went till the border gates.

The group was led by two women officers and it was indeed a proud moment to watch.

Similarly, soldiers from Pakistan march towards the gates. When the soldiers from both sides came face to face, it looked like a ‘face off’ game was being played. To be honest, it looked quite amusing to me.

While marching towards the border gates, soldiers from both sides raise their legs higher than normal showcasing their strength and aggression.

On reaching the gates, they stand in different poses as if challenging the soldiers on the other side. They stomp the ground hard with their feet and exhibit pride and fierceness on their faces.

It looked like they were challenging the soldiers on the other side playfully and some undeclared competition was going on.

Meanwhile the anchor was busy keeping the ‘josh’ high among the audience and encouraging them to clap more, cheer for the soldiers and shout slogans like ‘vande mataram’ and ‘bharat mata ki jai’.

To some people, the ceremony parade may seem stretching longer than required and over dramatic.

At sunset, after a formal handshake the flags of the countries are taken down and folded respectfully to be returned to their places. Gates are closed from both sides. With this, the entire ceremony comes to an end filling each one of the audience with a sense of pride and respect for the nation and its soldiers.

When is the best time to reach to witness the beating retreat at Wagah Border?

It’s best to reach as early as around 3 pm to get the seats closer to the border gates. Front seats near the gates are the best to get a better view of the ceremony. If you are able to secure a VIP pass with your contacts in the defence forces, it gets a lot easier as these stands are not crowded.

There are separate areas assigned for foreign tourists, VIPs and general public.

Eating and Drinking facility at the Wagah Border

There are stalls outside the stadium selling soft drinks, water and snacks. Even during the ceremony vendors come to the stands to sell eatables, drinks, flags, caps etc to the visitors.

Toilet Facility at the Wagah Border

Paid toilets are located outside the stadium a few hundred metres away from the main arena of the ceremony. Despite charging a fee to use them, they were not as clean as they should be.

Is photography of the parade allowed?

It came as a surprise that photography/videography of the whole ceremony and even taking pictures with the soldiers was allowed. We wanted to have a picture with the officer anchoring the event and we managed to get it. Due to security reasons, you won’t get mobile network in this area.

Are bags allowed at Wagah Border?

Bags (including ladies’ purse) are not allowed inside.

We left all our belongings in the van with the driver and carried with us our phones, some money and Identity proofs.

Cigarettes and similar items are strictly prohibited. If you have any with you, you have to get rid of it at the security check.

Security check may be more strict on occasions like Independence Day, Republic Day etc.

If there is any tension going on between the two countries, the ceremony may be canceled for that time.

Can Non Indians attend the Wagah Attari Border Parade?

Yes, anyone can attend this parade. Non-Indians must carry their passport with them for attending this parade. There is a separate queue for foreign tourists at the security check and a designated seating area. The area designated for foreign tourists is usually not crowded.

Wagah Border Ceremony tickets and parade timings

There is no ticket for this ceremony. It is free for all. The ceremony begins around 4:15 pm during winters and 5.15 pm during summers and lasts for about an hour. The timing changes depending on the season so make sure you double check before you go.

Pro Tip: The front rows at the stands are not covered or shaded. Only the top few rows at the back are covered and most of the seating area is open. It is good to carry sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat to stay safe from the sun.

What is the distance from parking to entry point?

One has to walk around 500 metre from the parking place to the main place where the ceremony is held. There is assistance provided for the physically disabled person for which the staff can be contacted at the premises.

Amritsar to Wagah border bus fare / Shared autos

Buses, shared and private cabs are easily available from the Golden temple for wagah border tour. Travel agents can be found shouting for this tour and one can ask hotel/hostel staff to arrange for this too

Bus and shared auto costs around Rupees 100 per person. Hop-on hop-off tourist bus would cost around Rupees 250.

Amritsar to Wagah border taxi fare

Hiring a private taxi would cost approx Rupees 1500 onwards for a round trip. Taxi and cabs are easily available from Golden temple, Amritsar Railway station and bus stand.

One can also book  a cab through apps like Ola, Uber etc. for Wagah border from any location in Amritsar.

It’s economical and convenient to hire a taxi for two or more people.  

When is the best time to go to Wagah Border?

When is the best time to go to Wagah Border? To enjoy the ceremony, it is advisable to visit Wagah border during winters between the months of October and March. During the rest of the months, the sun is very harsh .

I have heard many people wonder if the Wagah border is the same as the Atari border? The Pakistani side of this border is known as Wagah Border and the border at Indian side is called Atari border. Both terms are often used interchangeably by people.

This place is also called Wagah-Atari border.

This border falls on the Radcliffe line that divided India into two countries (India and Pakistan) in 1947.   With the demarcation of this border, many hearts and families were divided along with division of places between two countries. A divide that has kept rising with time.

‘Wagah’ became a part of Pakistan after the partition of India in 1947. ‘Atari’ is a village in India which is also the nearest railway station to this border.

How To Visit The Wagah Border Ceremony

Late last year, as Autumn was drawing to a close I travelled to two incredible countries. Two neighbouring countries in Asia with very different ways of life. One a predominately Muslim country and one predominantly Hindu.

Everyday at the border between these two countries there is a bizarre but passionate ceremony to mark the closing of the border. It’s called the Wagah Border Ceremony .

This is an article outlining how to visit the Wagah Border Ceremony, including a brief history, timings and costs involved.

The History of the Wagah Border

If you haven’t guessed by now the two countries I am referring to are India and Pakistan. Prior to partition in 1947 these two countries were under the rule of the British Raj. When Britain agreed to leave India, Gandhi had hoped for India to remain united as one country but this was not to be. Jinnah failed to believe that Muslims, as a minority, would be fully represented in India and eventually the separate nation of Pakistan was born.

The partition museum in Amritsar tells the story of how the physical border came to be where it is now. The task of defining the border in this region was given to two officers in the British Indian army. One Muslim and one Hindu. They were friends who were soon to reside in separate countries.

They met on a baron piece of land and simply drew a line in the ground. One side would become India and the other Pakistan. It was as simple (and brutal) as that!

The Wagah-Attari Border Ceremony – What’s it all About?

Today this place is known as the Wagah-Attari Border. Since 1959 military forces on both sides have practiced a daily ceremony to lower the flags and close the border. In this ceremony border forces, dressed in their respective uniforms, perform drills characterised by furiously paced marching and high leg kicking. Moves that might be more at home in a Monty Python sketch – think Ministry of funny walks!

The ceremony has grown so much in popularity that the border now has custom made stadiums to house all the spectators that come to watch.

Although the drills are performed on both sides, the Indian stadium is much bigger and boasts more of a party atmosphere.

I read an article by someone who didn’t want to recommend visiting the ceremony, as they believed it promoted animosity between the two nations. However I disagree. On the surface it appears that one side is trying to better the other with their respective chants and performances but it is exactly that – just a performance.

These two countries certainly have their differences but this ceremony is all very tongue in cheek and at the end of the day all spectators leave with a smile on their face.

How to Visit the Wagah Border Ceremony

Between the hours of 10am and 4pm the border is open and functions as a regular, albeit quiet border between India and Pakistan. The largest cities either side of the border are Lahore in Pakistan and Amritsar in India. Visitors can view the ceremony on either side . If planning to cross the border it is best to cross before 3pm.

You are able to cross the border and then stay to watch the ceremony, however bags are not permitted inside the stadiums. These have to be stored in lockers outside the border complex (50 INR). Lighters, cigarettes and anything that might be perceived as a weapon are not allowed at the border ceremony. Cameras and mobile phones are permitted.

As a foreigner you are not required to show your passport to view the ceremony but it is best to bring it just in case.

The best option to see the Wagah Border Ceremony is as a day trip from either Lahore or Amritsar.

From Lahore

Your hotel in Lahore can arrange a private taxi to the border. We were offered one for 2000 PKR. However we spoke to a local travel agent who arranged an Uber for 600 PKR.

From Amritsar

A private return taxi to the ceremony can cost as little as 1000 INR. Taxi touts will hassle any foreigners walking around the pedestrian area in Amritsar, so just be prepared to haggle.

The cheapest option for visiting the Wagah Border Ceremony is by shared minibus. The minivans can hold up to 15 people and it costs 100 INR. Tickets can be bought be the same taxi touts that hover around.

To visit the ceremony, we opted to take the open top bus. This cost less than 300 INR each for a return trip. The bus departed at 2:30pm and returned by 8:00pm. We enjoyed joining locals on the bus and getting into the party mood!

Times for the border ceremony will change in the winter, so just check with your hotel.

The Wagah Border Ceremony From the Indian Side

From the Indian side, after clearing the security screening you begin the long walk towards  the stadium. As a foreigner you are ushered towards the designated seating area which has prime view of the border gates.

At around 4pm the party really begins to wind up. A border official/PA guru starts to get the crowd suitably excited with chants of Hindustan, which is matched by chants of Pakistan on the opposing side. Then the crowd have a chance to get involved as they are invited to run along the parade area carrying the Indian flag. As the Bollywood music breaks out, ladies are then invited to demonstrate their best dance moves.

After yet more chanting, countless selfies and excessively loud music, the ceremony finally begins. Border officials dressed in elaborate outfits march along the parade area towards the border gate. At the end of their comical fast legged march, the officials throw some impressively high kicks and finish with a challenging pose.

This is repeated several times by both sides and finally the guards come together to lower the flags and slam the gates shut for the night. A completely bemusing but highly entertaining tourist attraction!

General Information for Your Visit to Amritsar

Where to stay in amritsar.

We stayed at a beautiful   boutique hotel close to the Golden Temple called Hotel Krishnas by Urban Galaxy . The family were really sweet and helpful. No breakfast was included but the rooms were clean and reasonably priced.

Where to eat in Amritsar

Amritsar’s most famous dish is the Amritsari kulcha. A sort of Paratha stuffed with cottage cheese or potato. Kulcha Land, which has been operational since before partition, is the best place to try this local delicacy. For more information on local Amritsar cuisine take a look at this site.

The Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is a must for any visit to Amritsar. This beautiful Sikh Temple is open to visitors from all religions and is free to enter. Include a visit to the kitchen which provides free food to any who need it. Visit at dawn or dusk (times vary depending on the time of year so check with your hotel) to see the holy book being carried into and out of the temple.

Everyone who enters The Golden Temple (or any other Sikh Temple) is required to wear a head scarf. You can pick them up for a few rupees in the streets outside. This applies to both males and females.

Partition Museum

This museum is great for providing some context before a trip to the Wagah Border Parade. It was the world’s first museum dedicated to partition. The museum, which is based in the town hall, contains videos, original artefacts donated by refugees, photographs and government documents.

Jalianwala Bagh

A historic garden housing a museum, gallery and several memorial structures dedicated to one of the darkest days in British army history. On April 13th 1919, British Indian Army soldiers opened fire on unarmed civilians who were celebrating a Sikh festival.  Without warning, soldiers were ordered to fire on anyone present and to keep firing until their ammunition ran out.

Brigadier General Dyer wanted to punish Indians for not obeying a notice that banned all meetings in public places. This horrific event became known as the Jalianwala Bagh Massacre. 

Final Thoughts On The Border Closing Ceremony

The India Pakistan Wagah Border Ceremony certainly is a very unique tradition. A tongue in cheek spectacle to end an otherwise boring formality. And a visit to Amritsar to view the Golden Temple is in itself worth the long journey north in India.

You also need to go through a security check before entering the premises. You can choose to sit on either side of the border, depending on your nationality or preference. There are separate seating arrangements for men and women on both sides.

Some tips and advice for watching the ceremony are:

1. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as you may have to walk a long distance from the parking area to the seating area.

2. Carry water bottles and snacks, as there are no food stalls or vendors inside the premises.

The distance and time may vary depending on the traffic and road conditions, but generally, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to reach any of these places from the Wagah Border. The opening hours and entry fee may also vary depending on the season and day of the week, but generally, they are open from sunrise to sunset and charge a nominal fee or no fee at all.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Wagah Border is during the winter months, preferably in January, February, or March . The weather is pleasant and comfortable during this season, and the ceremony is more enjoyable. The summer months can be too hot and humid to visit the Wagah Border, and the ceremony can be exhausting.

If you want to witness the Wagah Border ceremony , you should arrive at least two hours before the parade starts to secure a good seat. The ceremony is very popular and attracts thousands of visitors from both sides of the border.

How To Reach

There are different ways to reach Wagah Border from Amritsar, depending on your preference and budget. Here are some of the options:

You can get a bus from Amritsar to Attari, which is about 4 to 5 km from the Wagah Border1. The bus fare is around Rs. 50 per person. From Attari, you can take an auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw to the entry gate of the Wagah Border. The rickshaw fare is around Rs. 20 to 30 per person.

By taxi/cab:

You can book a taxi or a cab from Amritsar to Wagah Border , which is about 30 km away. The taxi or cab fare is around Rs. 800 to 1000 for a round trip. You can also share the taxi or cab with other passengers to reduce the cost.

You can take a local train from Amritsar to Attari railway station , which is the nearest railway station from the Wagah Border. The train fare is around Rs. 10 per person. The train timings are 8:10 am, 9:30 am , and 2:30 pm from Amritsar , and 6:30 am, 12:45 pm, and 6:45 pm from Attari. From Attari railway station, you can take an auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw to the entry gate of the Wagah Border.

By personal conveyance:

You can also drive your own car or bike from Amritsar to Wagah Border, which is about 28 km away. The road is well-maintained and easy to navigate. You can park your vehicle at the designated parking area near the entry gate of the Wagah Border.

You can take a taxi or an auto-rickshaw from the railway station to reach the border. The travel from the railway station to the border takes around 20 minutes. If you come from outside India, the nearest airport is Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar.

The airport connects major cities like Dubai, London, Toronto, and Singapore. Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to the border. The journey takes around 40 minutes.

Another popular way to reach the Wagah border is a guided tour. Many tour operators in Amritsar offer guided tours to the border, including transportation to and from the border. These tours usually include visiting other popular tourist spots in and around Amritsar, like the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh, located near the Wagah border.

Once you reach the border, you must pass security checks and show your identification documents. Visitors can enter the viewing area on both the Indian and Pakistani sides of the border. The ceremony occurs every evening, where both sides compete to lower their flags.

Wagah Border Ceremony, Amritsar: A Complete Guide (2024)

The Wagah Border Ceremony (or Beating Retreat Ceremony) is a spectacle that cannot be missed during a visit to Amritsar , the city that’s famous for its Golden Temple of the Sikhs in the Indian state of Punjab.

This ceremony takes place every day at the only open land border between India and Pakistan, which connects the cities of Amritsar and Lahore . Although few people actually cross the Wagah Border , thousands of people gather here every day to watch the military parade.

You will find everything you need to know if you want to attend the famous Wagah Border Ceremony in Amritsar in this guide. This ceremony is unlike anything I have ever seen, and considering the tensions between India and Pakistan , it’s quite a unique spectacle, to say the least.

The Wagah Border Ceremony: What You Should Know

The Wagah Border Ceremony: Why is it held?

When India was partitioned in 1947, forming West Pakistan (now Pakistan), India and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh ), the Wagah Border was established to mark the boundary between India and West Pakistan.

Ever since 1959, a military parade, known as the Wagah Border Ceremony has been held here. This ceremony stands as a symbol of the rivalry between both countries and aims to emphasize the countries’ cooperation and brotherhood at the same time.

This being said, rivalry and pride can be sensed a bit more than brotherhood, if you’re asking me. Soldiers on both sides will compete by raising their legs in the air as high as they can while people cheer for their country. On top of that, there’s an ongoing battle for the tallest flagpole at the Wagah Border (I kid you not).

The guards who participate in the ceremony have carefully been chosen too. Not only based on their abilities to perform the drill but also based on their height and how imposing they are.

Wagah Border Parade timing

The timings of the Wagah Border Ceremony depend on the season. During the winter , it’s held between 4:15 pm and 5:30 pm, whereas in the summer , it starts at 5:15 pm and ends at 6:30 pm.

Buses and rickshaws to the Wagah Border leave about 2 hours before the ceremony starts. This is at 2 pm in winter and at 3 pm in summer.

It takes about an hour to get to the border, and you will still have to walk for about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the tribunes from the parking lot.

How to get to the Wagah Border from Amritsar

The Wagah Border is 30 km (18.6 mi) from Amritsar and 25 km (15.5 mi) from Lahore and getting from Amritsar to the Wagah Border is super easy. It takes about an hour to get there, but this may vary a little according to your chosen way of transportation.

You will find plenty of people selling tickets for a ride to the border in the streets near the Golden Temple. It’s hard to miss them as they will approach you all the time.

The main ways to get to the border are the following (the prices I’ve mentioned are to go to the border and back):

• Tourist bus: This is the way I would recommend. The double-decker tourist bus costs 350 INR and you can either sit in the AC department inside or in the open-air department on top of the bus. You will find a ticket booth for this bus on the roundabout with the statue of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. This is a 10-minute walk from the Golden Temple.
• Rickshaw: A rickshaw ride to the border and back will cost around 800 INR. If you’re with a group of 3 or 4 people, this is probably the best way to get there. Do make sure to take an auto-rickshaw and not a CNG, as these are very slow.
• Shared rickshaw: Taking the shared rickshaw is the cheapest way to get to the Wagah border (it costs about 150 INR), but it will be a bit cramped. There are about 8 people per rickshaw, so it won’t be the most comfortable ride. You will find people selling tickets for shared rickshaws in the streets surrounding the Golden Temple.
• Private car: A private car is definitely the most comfortable way to get to the Wagah Border, but it is more expensive too. You can expect to pay around 1800 INR.
• Tour : If you don’t want to organize things by yourself, you can book an Amritsar sightseeing tour that includes the Wagah Border . This is an easy and comfortable way to attend the ceremony and see Amritsar’s highlights at the same time.

Either way you choose to get to the border, your driver will wait for you at the parking lot and bring you back to Amritsar after the ceremony. I would recommend exchanging numbers with your driver just in case you can’t find him when you’re ready to head back.

Where to sit during the ceremony

The tribunes on the Indian side of the border have a capacity of 25,000 spectators and they were pretty full when I was there.

There are three areas where you can sit: the “VIP” seats close to the border, the middle section and the upper section. It works on a first-come-first-serve basis, and it’s not possible to book seats in advance.

The best seats are the ones close to the border gate. This is where most of the action will happen. To get there, you will have to walk through the passway in the middle of the tribune building. There will be guards standing there, however, and they prioritize foreigners, women and children.

❗ Watch out for the following scam: When you sit down, some guys will hand you a drink and walk away to make it seem like it’s free. If you open it, they will come back and ask for a ridiculous amount of money.

Facilities: Drinks, snacks and Indian flags

It’s good to know that you can find some drinks and snacks in the streets leading up to the border. These are mainly water, juice, popcorn and chips.

There will be people selling drinks in the VIP tribunes too before the ceremony. Some of them are known to scam people, though, so it’s better to buy your drinks before reaching the tribunes .

Additionally, you can also buy Indian flags and caps, and there will be people walking around with Indian colours to paint on your face too (they will expect a tip).

Although I’ve heard they’re very filthy, it’s good to know that there are toilets at the Wagah Border.

Tip: You can buy drinks and snacks at the border but don’t forget to bring sunscreen as there’s little shade in the tribunes.

The Wagah Border Ceremony: What to expect

The Wagah Border Ceremony is a synchronized parade of Indian and Pakistani soldiers. The soldiers will march towards each other and compete by lifting their legs as high up in the air as they possibly can.

On the Indian side, the atmosphere is loud and cheerful. Women will be invited to dance to loud Indian music and run with the Indian flag. Meanwhile, the public will cheer and shout “Hindustan” or “Bharat mata ki jay” (meaning “long live mother India”).

Meanwhile, the Pakistani side of the parade is much quieter, with fewer people attending the ceremony. While the Pakistani side always had fewer attendants than the Indian side, the number of attendants has decreased recently. It’s believed that this is due to Pakistan’s soaring inflation because of the country’s crisis of 2022-2024.

After a while, the border gates that separate the nations will open. The marching continues a little longer and then, the flags of both countries will be lowered simultaneously.

At the end of the ceremony, an Indian soldier will shake hands with a Pakistani soldier before the gates are closed again. After the ceremony, hundreds of people will line up to take selfies with the soldiers.

Best Time to Visit Amritsar

The best time to visit Amritsar is between November and March , which are the winter months. At this time of the year, the weather will be most pleasant (13.5°C to 26.9 °C or 56.4°F to 80.4°F).

Do note that it tends to get quite cold in January , as temperatures average 11.5°C (52.9°F) during this month. If you prefer warmer weather, the months of November and March will be better.

If you can, then avoid summer ( April to June ) as it can get up to 39.2 °C (102.6°F) at this time of the year, which is not ideal for exploring.

The monsoon season starts in July and ends in October . There will be quite some rainfall and it will be hot and humid at this time of the year. Although this is not the most ideal time to visit Amritsar, it’s better than the Summer.

Where to Stay in Amritsar

During a visit to Amritsar, the best place to stay is within walking distance of the Golden Temple. This is where you will find most of the tourist attractions, restaurants, shops and hotels.

I stayed at Hotel Shine Star , a nice and clean budget stay in a quiet street just 10 minutes from the Golden Temple. The one downside I encountered here is that some of their rooms don’t have a window. However, if you’re out and about exploring all day, I don’t think this is a big deal.

Yes, it’s completely free to attend the Beating Retreat Ceremony. You will only need to arrange your transport to and from the Wagah border. This can be done cheaply if you’re on a tight budget.

It’s not possible to book tickets for the Wagah Border Ceremony. The seats in the tribunes are on a first-come, first-served basis. You can, however, book your transportation to the border in advance (which I recommend doing) or book a tour that combines the ceremony with Amritsar’s highlights.

A Foreign Visitor's Guide to India's Wagah Border Ceremony

27km from the Indian city of Amritsar, Wagah Border is the only border crossing between India and Pakistan that is open to foreign visitors. What is interesting about it is a colorful daily border ceremony performed by the border guards located on both sides before they lower the flags and close the gates. Traveling to India and Wagah Border? You probably need to read more of the guide before going.

What is the Wagah Border Ceremony?

Patriotic songs are played, with entertaining folk performances as pre-ceremony excitement. The actual ceremony starts with a yell and passionate battle calls echoed by the crowd from each side, The Indian border guards then appear in khaki uniforms and plumage-like hats, while the Pakistan soldiers dress in black. After the patriotic scream-offs, both stern-looking guards march towards the border gate, stomping heavily and kicking high in an attempt to outdo their counterparts in the opposite direction. When the gates are opened, the march ends with an exchange of the soldiers' silent death stares. It is rumored that the level of fury staged marks the current Indo-Pak relations. The guards salute each other and exchange brisk handshakes before lowering the flags and closing the gates. The whole procession is truly inspirational, everyone, even foreign visitors, will find themselves fully engaged in the aura of celebrations.

Things foreign visitors should know before going

When to attend.

The daily ceremony is normally held at around 4:30 p.m. in winter and 5:30 p.m. in summer throughout the year. To get a good seat, it's suggested to arrive at least half an hour ahead of time. In this case, summer is not a good time to go as there are no shades at all, and the sun remains very fierce in the afternoon. October to March produces cooler days. Try to avoid weekends, when the periphery can be packed with thousands of people.

Wagah Border can be easily accessed by buses and cars, but none of the modes of transport is allowed to get the gear at the border gate, which is 500 meters from the entrance. It means all visitors must stop at the entrance and walk in on foot.

The event doesn't need any tickets to join. Foreign visitors are required to show their passports to enter. So remember to bring it along! If you are traveling with Odynovo, your private guide and driver will escort you to the entrance and wait for your return at the agreed meeting point at any time. Basically, you don't need to worry about language when inside as the border officers speak understandable English and are willing to offer help.

Seating Arrangements

There is a foreigners' section which allows mixed genders to sit together. The distance is less than 50 meters from the border gate, a pretty good place to watch the ceremony. Domestic spectators are divided into men and women with children arranged in separate areas, which are located around 80 to 100 meters from the border gate.

The scene can be chaotic sometimes. Please take good care of your children if you are taking them to the ceremony, as it needs extra attention to possible pushing, jostling, or stampede.

It is a well-known fact that the relations between Pakistan and India are not always peaceful. Fortunately, both countries are happy to produce a motivational and passionate joint ritual every day at the border. With tight security, it is safe to watch the event. In the past three decades since the ceremony started, no spectators were hurt by border issues.

Prohibited Items

Watchers must go through a strict security check before entering the visitor areas. Bags, cigarettes, and lighters are not allowed inside. When traveling with Odynovo, you may leave your bag in the car, only carrying the valuable belongings. Allowed items include males' wallets, cameras (without the bag), and mobile phones. Note that signals are banned inside, though. Food, snacks, and water are also OK, but try to put them in transparent bags like plastic bags. The actual security restriction depends on the situation of the day.

Things to Watch Out for

1) As the noise can be very loud, a pair of earplugs would help a lot.

2) Keep an eye on your belongings as pick-pockets happen around the area. If you lose anything important, report to the border police station.

3) When the ceremony ends, more than 1,000 people leave the border in the meantime. Expect to see unorderly crowds and traffic jams along the road back to Amritsar.

4) There are vendors selling copies of the ceremony and procession. Just be aware of pirated or poor-quality ones.

In contrast, the Attari border crossing is approximately 3 kilometres from the Wagah border on the Indian side. The main difference is that Wagah is the only border crossing open for pedestrian traffic. In contrast, the Attari border is open for vehicular traffic, primarily used to move goods and commodities between India and Pakistan. Men and women sit separately in stadium-style seats on the Pakistan side, where the atmosphere is more serious. But on the Indian side, it’s a celebration of national pride. Females dance in the street as the music plays over the speakers while spectators wave Indian flags.

By Train :  Amritsar is well-connected by train, and you can hire a taxi from the Amritsar railway station or take a local bus to reach the Wagah Border.

By Air :  Amritsar has an international airport, Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, about 30 km from the Wagah Border.
