Nicaragua

Avianca has dropped the price of their flights from Toronto to Managua, Nicaragua down to $309 CAD roundtrip including taxes.

Actually, that's not quite true. Avianca doesn't include any carry-on luggage in their base fares which allows their prices to appear significantly cheaper than they really are in major search engines.

You need to add around $120 CAD roundtrip to their prices for a more realistic comparison against other airlines.

For a true comparison against other airlines, Avianca's flights to Nicaragua have dropped down to $425 CAD roundtrip.

These are off season flights, during the rainier months of August, September, and October. The dry season starts in November.

However, cheap flights to Nicaragua are quite rare. The last time there were some cheap ones from Toronto was over 3 years ago.

The flights have one stop in El Salvador each way.

- Adjust the trip length at the bottom.

- Look for the cheapest dates ($309 roundtrip).

2. Click through to the Avianca website. The price will be in $USD. You need to select the 'Basic Fare' level and then ignore the usual attempts to sell you a bundle.

And then add your luggage separately in the following steps.

14 Best Weekend Getaways from Toronto

Written by Lana Law and Michael Law Updated Feb 15, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Authors Michael and Lana Law live in Southern Ontario and enjoy visiting destinations within easy reach of Toronto.

Toronto is an amazing place to live, but sometimes it's nice to escape from the familiar, and experience new places. If you want to see more of Ontario, it's easy to plan weekend escapes.

Algonquin Provincial Park

Toronto is also a gateway city, with direct flights from destinations around the globe. Visitors can use the city as a jumping-off point for excursions to nearby towns and natural areas.

You can find some of Ontario's most charming small towns within a couple of hours of the city, and within a five-hour radius of Toronto are world-class cities, peaceful rural areas, cultural hot spots, and amazing outdoor areas.

While most people only think about getaways to other areas of Ontario, Toronto is also within striking distance of Quebec and Upstate New York .

Skiers and boarders will be pleased to know that many ski resorts can be found within a few hours of Toronto , and these are some of the most popular weekend getaways from Toronto in the winter.

For ideas on weekend trips, in both summer and winter, see our list of the best weekend getaways from Toronto.

1. Niagara Falls

2. algonquin provincial park, 3. niagara-on-the-lake, 5. blue mountain and collingwood, 7. prince edward county, 8. stratford, 11. wasaga beach, 12. rochester, 13. montreal, 14. syracuse.

View from shore of Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is perhaps the easiest weekend getaway from Toronto and the most popular. Only 1.5 hours down the QEW Highway, this natural wonder is Ontario's most visited attraction and something everyone should see.

Niagara Falls themselves provide hours of discovery, whether it's just a glimpse over the side and a stroll along the gorge, or a tour down beneath the falls, where you can truly appreciate the splendor and power of the falls as the ground shakes beneath you.

View from below Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls

Other activities to incorporate into your weekend getaway include a Hornblower Niagara cruise to the base of the falls, a jet boat ride through the rapids, or a visit to the sights and sounds of Clifton Hill.

At night, the falls are lit up in different colors. A stroll along the gorge with the cascading water reflecting the pink or blue lights makes for a romantic evening.

Accommodation in Niagara Falls is plentiful and easy to find. Falls view rooms are the best option and definitely worth the higher price. Dining options are extensive and varied, making it easy to find something to suit your taste and budget.

Getting from Toronto to Niagara Falls is easy. You can drive yourself, take a tour, or use public transportation.

Canoes on the shore in Algonquin Provincial Park

If you are craving a bit of peace and quiet, escape the city and head to the wilds of Algonquin Provincial Park. Immerse yourself in nature and recharge. This is the perfect place for families, couples, groups, or adventuresome solo travelers.

Depending on where your interests lie, you can rent a canoe and set out for a paddle, lace up your hiking boots and head out on some of Algonquin's hiking trails , or sit in your Muskoka chair and watch the loons glide by.

Accommodation options include camping under old-growth white pine trees in the backcountry or along the lakeshore at one of the park's campgrounds , staying at a luxury lodge, or renting a rustic cabin.

You can also find interesting things to do in the nearby town of Hunstville , which also has a number of lovely resorts. Huntsville is just 30 minutes from the park gates.

Algonquin park is just over three hours north of Toronto and easily reached by a divided highway for a majority of the drive.

Niagara-on-the-Lake in summer

For a romantic weekend getaway, head to Niagara-on-the-Lake . This charming town, known for its colonial-style architecture, was once the capital of Upper Canada.

Check into a luxury hotel, like the Prince of Wales Hotel , or a historical bed and breakfast. Park the car and wander the main street, do a bit of window shopping, and then stop for lunch or dinner.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

If you are here in season, check out the Shaw Festival . Two theaters in town showcase an impressive roster of shows from April right through until December .

Walkable from town is the Fort George National Historic Site , a reconstructed military base dating from 1812. Interpreters in period costume reenact daily life from the time period; the highlight is the firing of ancient muskets.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is just over 1.5 hours from Toronto .

Elora

The cute town of Elora has just about everything you need for a great weekend getaway close to Toronto.

Historic Metcalfe Street is packed with shops selling clothing, gifts, and one-of-a-kind items from local artisans. Many of the retail establishments are housed in beautifully restored buildings from the 19 th century complete with creaky, old floors.

Cozy restaurants serve innovative local fare with the freshest ingredients from farms nearby. You can either dine on Metcalfe Street and do a bit of people watching, or if you prefer a more sedate pace, grab a seat on a patio overlooking the river.

Looking for that ideal piece of art to hang on the wall? Elora has some wonderful galleries showcasing well-known local artists, along with up-and-coming artists.

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to be sure to visit the Elora Gorge located a short distance from town. Here, the Grand River flows through a narrow chasm with sheer walls reaching up nearly 80 feet.

Blue Mountain Village

Long a favorite four-season weekend getaway destination, Blue Mountain and the nearby town of Collingwood are the ideal places for just about anyone. Families come here to enjoy the extensive list of activities, and couples come here for romantic escapes .

In winter, Blue Mountain Ski Resort and other nearby hills satisfy the need for speed for those who like to swish down the slopes. Spend your days skiing and at night dining beside a roaring fire in one of the many fine restaurants.

Come spring, hikers and mountain bikers take to the trails that crisscross the Niagara Escarpment. In the summer, enjoy the nearby orchards and world-famous Elvis Festival. When cooler temperatures start to creep in again, head to the hills for a kaleidoscope of colors as the trees change.

Blue Mountain Village in summer

Blue Mountain has a pedestrian-only town area at the base of the ski hill. Here, you'll find a small lake, an assortment of shops, and restaurants with outdoor patios in the summer.

In nearby Collingwood , Hurontario Street is where the action is. Great dining, shopping, and entertainment options are just a short stroll from one another. This is also a good place to find more affordable accommodation options.

Around Christmas, Collingwood puts on a good show for visitors. You may even run into some reindeer as you walk around downtown. Check the town's calendar to see what's going on before you arrive.

A lake in Muskoka

A weekend getaway to Muskoka, with its towering pine trees, clear lakes, beautiful beaches , and rocky shorelines, is almost a rite of passage for Torontonians.

Pack up the car and head to one of the many provincial parks with your friends and set up camp or go for a hike. Some of the popular provincial parks in the area are Algonquin , Six Mile , Arrowhead , and Hardy Lake .

Alternatively, rent a cottage for the weekend and enjoy a few more creature comforts, like electricity and running water.

Perhaps the easiest option is to check into a luxury resort and be pampered with fine linens, attentive service, and great dining.

As you drive around be sure to stop in at Don's Bakery in Bala for a sweet treat. Also in town is the famous Kee to Bala performance venue, where top bands perform nightly in the summer.

Weekend getaway activities in Muskoka generally involve water, and things to do include swimming, water skiing, tubing, jet skiing, and just cruising around the lake. A more sedate way to enjoy the water is to take a cruise from Gravenhurst on Lake Muskoka ; one of the highlights is a trip past the sumptuous cottages of Millionaire's Row.

Autumn in Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County is a popular weekend getaway for good reason. Just a two-hour drive from Toronto , this bucolic countryside is dotted with small towns and rolling hills.

Check into a cozy bed and breakfast and let your stress melt away. Go shopping at the galleries in Picton then grab some freshly made cheese at Black River Cheese in Milford.

Dining in Prince Edward County ranges from small, exclusive restaurants, run by chefs relocated from Toronto, right through to the local favorites serving homemade fare.

In the summer, nearby Sandbanks Provincial Park is a fun place to visit. Run down the sand dunes flowing right into the clear waters of Lake Ontario or simply lounge on the beach.

Stratford

Culture vultures will want to head directly to Stratford to revel in the multitude of theater options. This medium-sized town is all about entertainment, with four stages throughout the city hosting productions from the Stratford Festival .

The season runs from April to November . Should your interests lie more towards modern music, Stratford is also the former home of music legend Justin Bieber.

Check into your bed and breakfast, luxury hotel, or other accommodation and then wander around the city, where you'll find a beautiful riverfront area and spectacular gardens. As one of the best small towns in Ontario , Stratford has a thriving culinary scene, just talk to your hotel to find out where the hottest chefs have set up shop.

McKinley Square, Buffalo

To make your weekend getaway a bit more international, cross the border into the United States and head to Buffalo. This welcoming city has much going for it, and some of the recent waterfront improvements in the Canalside area make it a great destination.

The city is a hot spot for dining. Local chefs have been reinventing the culinary scene, and you'll find some great places offering innovative and interesting dishes from around the world.

If you stay downtown, Buffalo is a very walkable city. If the distances are a bit far for your liking, hop on the free tram that runs down Main Street.

A trip to Buffalo from Toronto would not be complete without a bit of shopping. The best shopping can be had at the Galleria Mall along with the shops at and surrounding the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls . Be sure to stock up on your duty free items before heading back to Canada.

Parliament Hill, Ottawa

A bit further afield, but still well within a great weekend or long weekend getaway, is Ottawa. Canada's capital city is chock-full of attractions that every Canadian should see: the Parliament Buildings, the Rideau Canal , Canadian War Museum, and the National Gallery of Canada just to name a few.

Ottawa is a well-laid-out city and very walkable. Stay downtown if you can and park your car for the weekend. You'll be able to wander past all these iconic sights, eventually making your way over to Byward Market area. Here, you'll find the city's best restaurants, shops, and pedestrian-only areas with street performers.

Ottawa is an easy drive from Toronto, it usually takes just over four hours. Alternatively, you can take the train, the travel time is about the same, and it is much more relaxing.

If you are a sports fan and have always wanted to experience a US college football or basketball game, with its passionate locals cheering the team on, check the schedule for the Syracuse University Orange teams. Tickets are cheap, and you'll almost be guaranteed to have a good time.

Wasaga Beach

Fun times are in store on a summer weekend getaway to Wasaga Beach. This beach town has a lively vibe, and every weekend in the summer something is going on. If the weather is nice count on big crowds and incredible people watching.

Wasaga Beach is the longest freshwater beach in the world , and its sandy shoreline and shallow, warm waters are ideal for families. This is one of the best beaches in Ontario .

Wasaga Beach

Off the beach, you'll find a wonderful selection of hiking, biking, and walking trails that wind their way through the sand dunes just back from the beach.

Accommodation in town is generally at independent small hotels and bed and breakfasts. These places book up early on summer weekends, so plan ahead.

Evening in Rochester

Rochester may not be on your radar as a weekend getaway from Toronto, but it should be. This small city will surprise you. Where else can you find a massive 85-foot waterfall tumbling off a cliff in the center of downtown?

The city is bursting with fine museums, including the world-famous Eastman Museum & Mansion, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Strong National Museum of Play, and the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. These are just a few of the things to do in Rochester .

Rochester has an array of fine-dining options along with funky and fun places, too. For dinner check out The Club Room in a beautifully restored warehouse space; grab breakfast at the Highland Park Diner on your way out of the city back to Toronto.

Rochester is less than three hours from Toronto on divided highways the entire way.

Old Montreal

For a bit of Quebec on your weekend getaway, visit Montreal . This world-class city has everything you need to enjoy yourself - a trendy restaurant scene, historical districts, designer boutiques, galleries, and, of course, world-famous bagels.

Stay in Old Montreal , down by the river, where you'll find boutique hotels housed in renovated warehouses dating from the 19 th century. Old Montreal is a wonderful area with narrow, twisty streets that are a joy to wander both day and night. Duck in for a coffee or espresso if it's cold, or if you are visiting in the summer, grab a seat on an outdoor patio.

Old architecture in Montreal

From downtown Toronto, you can take the train to Montreal . The trip takes about five hours and is stress-free. You'll arrive right in the heart of the action in downtown Montreal. Driving is also an option and only takes about 30 minutes longer.

Syracuse

Just over an hour farther along the same highway to Rochester is Syracuse. This college town is a lively place, with a youthful vibe, that always has something going on. Catch a game of football or basketball and cheer on the Orange, enjoy some shopping at Destiny USA shopping mall, or explore the city's museums and other attractions .

Syracuse has a revitalized downtown that is easily walkable, with historic buildings dating from the 19 th century. In this same area are funky and fun restaurants, try Pastabilities for dinner, Modern Malt for breakfast, and grab a donut at Glazed and Confused for the road trip home.

A low-cost carrier from Europe has just kicked off a massive sale on flights from the Toronto area this week, with trips to a handful of exciting destinations starting in the low $200s.

Play Airlines, based in Iceland, is running its spring seat sale from April 15-21, offering 25 per cent off base fares out of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Around an hour outside of Toronto, the Hamilton airport hub is a smaller alternative to the ever-busy Pearson, which itself can be almost the same length of a trek from downtown.

A view over a city skyline with a body of water to the right. A spire towers above the skyscrapers. The sky is turning a bright orange.

By Ingrid K. Williams Photographs by Eugen Sakhnenko

Locals may insist (politely, of course) that Toronto doesn’t belong atop any traveler’s wish list, but don’t fall for that Canadian modesty. Proudly multicultural with an outstanding art scene, fantastic food and a patchwork of diverse neighborhoods to explore, this sprawling city — Canada’s most populous — has more to offer than one could possibly digest in a single weekend. But that’s enough time to sample the local smorgasbord, from the many new restaurants and shops to the latest art exhibitions and a newly revitalized landmark theater. Anyone in town for Hot Docs , North America’s biggest documentary festival, which begins on April 25, will find plenty of reasons to roam beyond the downtown core, from the beaches in the east to drinking and dining hotspots that have sprouted in some unexpected places in the west.

Recommendations

  • Trillium Park , west of Toronto’s inner harbor, is relatively crowd-free despite having an outstanding view of the downtown skyline.
  • Sunny’s Chinese , a popular restaurant hidden inside a mini-mall in the Kensington Market neighborhood, serves fun plates like Hong Kong-style French toast with black-sesame jam.
  • The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto is currently hosting “Greater Toronto Art 2024,” the second installment of its triennial.
  • Cry Baby Gallery is an art space with a cocktail bar hidden behind a curtain in the back.
  • Massey Hall , a landmark theater, reopened in 2021 after a three-year renovation and modernization project.
  • Evergreen Brick Works is a cultural community center with a popular year-round farmers’ market.
  • The Gardiner Museum is dedicated to the artistry and craft of ceramics.
  • The Philosopher’s Walk winds through the leafy St. George campus of the University of Toronto.
  • The Bata Shoe Museum has an unexpectedly fascinating exhibit exploring the history of what we put on our feet.
  • The Beach (also called the Beaches), on the eastern edge of the city, is a neighborhood abutting Lake Ontario with sandy shorelines and a wood-plank boardwalk.
  • The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is a sprawling gallery surrounded by acres of pristine woodland.
  • Zaal Art Gallery has paintings, sculptures and fashion from contemporary Iranian artists.
  • Patois is a festive restaurant serving Caribbean-Asian dishes like jerk chicken chow mein.
  • Bad Attitude Bread is a plant-based bakery with specialties like vegan Cheddar biscuits with Old Bay seasoning.
  • Milky’s , a cool cafe, brews up specialty drinks like a spiced maple syrup latte.
  • Taverne Bernhardt’s is a cozy neighborhood bistro featuring local produce and rotisserie-style chicken.
  • Bowie , a vibey bar beneath a laundromat, offers great people-watching behind an unmarked entrance.
  • Bathurst Local is a laid-back bar with a maze of private karaoke rooms.
  • White Lily Diner is an all-day restaurant serving comfort food, with produce supplied by its own Ontario farm.
  • Easy Tiger Goods is a sunny boutique that sells cute made-in-Toronto ceramics.
  • Issues Magazine Shop stocks rare print titles.
  • Etc Home , a home décor shop, sells hand-crocheted coasters, embroidered tote bags and more.
  • A solid option downtown, the Ace Hotel opened in 2022 in a newly constructed building designed by the Toronto firm Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. Beyond the lobby framed by soaring concrete arches, the hotel features 123 cozy guest rooms as well as a restaurant and a rooftop lounge. Rooms start at around 499 Canadian dollars, or around $367.
  • In the trendy West Queen West area, the Drake Hotel is a longtime favorite for its cultural events, concerts and art-filled interiors. With the addition of a new five-story wing, which opened in 2021, the property now has 51 rooms in addition to a popular lounge, cafe and rooftop terrace. Rooms start at around 360 dollars.
  • On vibrant Dundas Street West in Little Portugal is the family-run Ode , which opened in 2021 with eight private guest rooms, each designed in collaboration with a different local artist. Rooms start at 260 dollars.
  • Look for a short-term rental in the Trinity-Bellwoods neighborhood, which is surrounded by great restaurants, shops, bars, bakeries, breweries and the popular Trinity Bellwoods Park .
  • It's easy to get around Toronto by public transportation — there are subways , buses and streetcars — and on foot . You can also find taxis and use ride-hailing apps , including Lyft and Uber, and there are bike-share stations throughout the city (a day pass is 15 dollars). From Toronto Pearson International Airport, the UP Express train takes 25 minutes to arrive at Union Station downtown. Even closer is Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, a regional hub on the Toronto Islands that is connected to downtown by ferry and a pedestrian tunnel.

A person sits on a low rocky shelf on a pebbly shore. The person is surrounded by mostly bare trees and they are looking out onto calm water.

Trillium Park

Trillium Park , which opened in 2017 just west of Toronto’s inner harbor, remains relatively uncrowded despite having an outstanding view of the skyline. From Queens Quay West, it’s an easy half-hour walk to the park along the popular Martin Goodman Trail. Or rent a bicycle from one of the many bike-share stations and pedal along the lakeshore. After admiring the view of the iconic CN Tower across the water, head back toward downtown, stopping at nearby Inukshuk Park , with its 30-foot-high Inuit stone formation, and at the Toronto Music Garden, a grassy waterfront park where live performances take place during the summer.

Down the hallway of a nondescript mini-mall, a small handwritten sign on a door indicates you’ve found Sunny’s Chinese . Since opening in the eclectic Kensington Market neighborhood in 2022, this buzzy spot has packed its mint green booths with crowds hankering for a spicy, family-style feast. On a recent visit, highlights included the spinach-and-chrysanthemum-stem salad (12 Canadian dollars, or about $9), fiery dan dan noodles (19 dollars), and what a server said “pays our rent”: the sublime Hong Kong-style French toast layered with black-sesame jam and oolong-infused condensed milk (14 dollars). Couldn’t nab a reservation? Try for a last-minute table at nearby Patois , a festive Caribbean-Asian restaurant with a flaky Jamaican-patty sandwich (12 dollars) and jerk chicken chow mein (27 dollars).

Audience members are seated in the red chairs of a grand-looking theater.

Massey Hall

In 2021, Torontonians applauded the reopening of Massey Hall , a landmark theater, after a three-year renovation and modernization project. For over a century, this downtown concert hall has hosted top international performers, including Charlie Parker, Aretha Franklin, Gordon Lightfoot and Jon Batiste. The revitalized theater is now part of a larger performing arts complex, the Allied Music Centre , with a new music venue and recording studios in an adjacent building. But one thing that hasn’t changed: the famously excellent acoustics. To hear for yourself, check the calendar for upcoming events, which include concerts by the Black Crowes, the indie-rock group Waxahatchee and the Canadian singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn.

People sit on the lawn of a park during the daytime. The sky is clear and blue. The trees in the park are bare, and a skyline is visible in the distance.

Grange Park, just south of the Art Gallery of Ontario.

A market stall with jars of honey displayed on a table. A vendor behind the table is in conversation with a person on the other side of the table.

Saturday farmers’ market at Evergreen Brick Works

A former quarry and brick factory have been repurposed as Evergreen Brick Works , a cultural community center northeast of downtown. People flock here on Saturdays for the year-round farmers’ market, which reflects the diversity of the city itself. In addition to the usual market stalls — local cheeses, produce, fish, meat and bread — many vendors sell prepared foods that include Persian baklava , Swedish pastries and Tibetan momos (try the beef ones doused with hot sauce; 11.50 dollars for five). Seating is available between the historic brick kilns, but in fair weather, grab your food to go and explore the trails snaking through the surrounding forested ravines.

Many visitors prioritize the best-known museums, but that would mean missing niche standouts like the Gardiner Museum , which specializes in the artistry and craft of ceramics. Inside, explore ancient figures from Mesoamerican cultures and contemporary sculptural vases depicting polar animals by the Inuit ceramicist Roger Aksadjuak (admission, 15 dollars). Afterward, stroll along the Philosopher’s Walk, a nearby path through the leafy St. George campus of the University of Toronto. Then continue to the Bata Shoe Museum , another oft-overlooked institution, where an unexpectedly fascinating, two-floor exhibit traces the history of what we put on our feet (admission, 14 dollars).

A table displays stacks of magazines. One cover has a picture of a crying baby and has the title "Feels."

Issues Magazine Shop

Little Portugal is packed with quirky independent shops and galleries, many conveniently clustered along Dundas Street West. Start at Easy Tiger Goods , a sunny boutique that sells pastel taper candles and cute made-in-Toronto ceramics. Peruse the rare print titles at Issues Magazine Shop , then shop for hand-crocheted coasters and embroidered tote bags at Etc Home . Consider investing in an artwork at Zaal Art Gallery , a cavernous space that opened last October showcasing paintings, photographs, sculptures and fashion from contemporary Iranian artists. Later, continue farther down the street to Bad Attitude Bread , a vegan bakery, for an Old Bay-seasoned Cheddar-flavored biscuit (5 dollars), and to Milky’s , a cool cafe nearby, for a spiced maple syrup latte (6.50 dollars).

An excellent primer on what’s happening in the city’s art scene is now on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto , in a former factory building in the Lower Junction Triangle neighborhood. The current exhibition, “Greater Toronto Art 2024,” is the second installment of the museum’s triennial and features a range of artworks, performances and installations, including photographs by the American-born artist June Clark of her adopted home of Toronto in the 1970s and ’80s; a site-specific greenhouse installed by the Brooklyn-based Canadian artist Lotus L. Kang; and a series of sculptural drawings, traced from an heirloom Persian rug, from the Iraqi-born Canadian artist Sukaina Kubba (through July 28; admission, 14 dollars).

A tall soft-serve ice cream with sauce and candy, served in a glass dish on a small plate.

Roast chicken and local produce are the winning formula at Taverne Bernhardt’s , a cozy neighborhood bistro on a quiet lane south of Dundas Street West, where date-night couples sip wine at the pewter-topped bar and groups of friends encircle tables along a soft leather banquette. The short seasonal menu recently included tender roasted carrots with herbs and tahini (20 dollars), in addition to the crisp-skinned, rotisserie-style chicken served on a platter with thick-cut fries, coleslaw and pickles, toasted sesame-seed buns, and a side of gravy (37 dollars). And for dessert, there’s a heaping swirl of soft serve in changing flavors, like Earl Grey (14 dollars).

Exploring Toronto’s nightlife could mean ice bathing at Othership , a sociable sauna downtown, or sipping a white stout at Blood Brothers Brewing in the revitalized northwestern warehouse district. But you needn’t venture that far after dinner to find appealing options, if you know where to look. It’s a short walk from Bernhardt’s to Cry Baby Gallery , a white-walled art space where a curtain in the back hides a moody cocktail bar serving spicy mezcal margaritas (the best is the passion-fruit version, 20 dollars). Even closer is Bowie , a vibey, mirrored lounge that opened last year beneath a laundromat. It offers great people-watching and pink Paloma cocktails (16 dollars), and is accessible via an unmarked entrance (down the alley, below the neon bow-tied mouse sign). Later, visit Bathurst Local , where a laid-back bar leads to a maze of private karaoke rooms, each more colorful than the last.

People strolling in the trendy West Queen West area.

A person walks a dog along a boardwalk that follows a shoreline. It is a sunny day and there is a large tree in the foreground that is bare of leaves.

The ocean may be hundreds of miles away, but you can still start the day with a walk on the beach. On the east side of the city, an easy streetcar ride from downtown, the neighborhood abutting Lake Ontario is known as the Beaches (or the Beach, depending on whom you ask ) because of its long, sandy shoreline. Head down to the water to join locals walking their dogs through the sand. From the easternmost edge, it’s a leisurely half-hour promenade along the wood-plank boardwalk to Woodbine Beach, the widest stretch of sand lapped by the lake’s calm waves.

When hunger strikes, hop back on the streetcar headed west to the White Lily Diner , an all-day restaurant in the Riverside neighborhood serving its own brand of comfort food. One must-order is the cheesy patty melt, served with poblano relish on house-made bread (23.25 dollars), which comes with a side salad of crisp greens from the restaurant’s own White Lily Farms , northeast of the city. This snug locale has only five counter seats and seven Dijon yellow booths, so there’s often a wait. But I’d happily queue for even a single bite of the fluffy buttermilk griddle cakes with maple syrup (16.25 dollars).

People admire a large painted canvas on display in a low lit gallery. In the foreground, a neat bundle of sticks are on display.

McMichael Canadian Art Collection

Yes, it’s a trek to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection , a sprawling gallery surrounded by acres of pristine woodland, about 17 miles northwest of downtown. But there’s no prettier place to become acquainted with some of Canada’s most influential artists: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, a collective of landscape painters who rose to fame in the early 20th century with their romantic depictions of Canadian nature. Admire the rural landscape paintings, including glacial mountains by Lawren Harris and placid lakes by A.J. Casson. Then visit galleries dedicated to contemporary Canadian works, including those by Inuit and First Nations artists, such as the brilliantly colorful paintings of Norval Morrisseau . Not keen on splurging for a car ride? There’s an equally edifying collection of Canadian art — minus the sylvan setting — at the Art Gallery of Ontario downtown (admission to the McMichael, 20 dollars; to the AGO, 30 dollars). (The AGO is temporarily closed because of a workers’ strike.)

With Air Canada, a non-stop flight from Toronto to Nassau is just over 3 hours — you'll be there before you know it!

Varadero, Cuba

Why You Need To Go: With lush forests, gorgeous beaches and a dynamic music scene, it's no wonder Cuba is a go-to vacation spot for Canadians.

Varadero is a popular resort town where you'll find one of the most famous stretches of sand, Varadero Beach, and it's also located near the capital city of Havana, which makes for a great day trip.

With Sunwing, a flight from Toronto to Cuba is less than 3 hours and 30 minutes, and you can also find all-inclusive vacation packages to the country.

Miami, Florida

Why You Need To Go: If you want perfect weather, pristine beaches and iconic attractions, Miami is just a quick flight away with Air Canada.

About a 3-hour trip from Toronto, you can look for panthers and alligators in the Everglades, explore coral reefs and enjoy a thriving nightlife scene, all without needing to take a long-haul flight.

One not to miss spot is the nearby Biscayne National Park. Despite its proximity to downtown Miami, the park feels like a completely different world, where you can see mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, sea turtles, and even manatees.

Cancun, Mexico

Flight time: 4 hours

Why You Need To Go: With a flight time of just 4 hours from Toronto, Cancun is perfect if you want a quick trip to paradise.

Located in the Quintana Roo province along Mexico's breathtaking Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is known for its stunning blue waters and white sand beaches.

The city also offers a vibrant nightlife scene, restaurants and opportunities for adventure, whether that's visiting nearby Mayan ruins or snorkelling in crystal-clear water.

You can get there direct from Toronto with Sunwing.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Flight time: 4.5 hours

Why You Need To Go: Jamaica's Montego Bay offers the perfect blend of relaxing beach getaway and adventure-filled vacation.

The city is the third most populous in Jamaica, offering tons of attractions, luxe resorts and hotels, and bustling nightlife, especially on the "Hip Strip," the tourism epicentre of Montego Bay.

Direct flights to Montego Bay from Toronto are only 4 hours long with Sunwing, meaning you can spend less time in the air and more time soaking up the sun.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Why You Need To Go: Another quick escape to the Caribbean, Puerto Plata is just a 4 hour flight away from Toronto with Sunwing.

Unlike its neighbouring Punta Cana, Puerto Plata offers plenty of off-resort sites and activities, including the colonial architecture of its historic district, the breathtaking views from Mount Isabel de Torres or the sheer wonder of the Damajaqua cascades.

This is, of course, in addition to stunning beaches with soft white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water.

Phoenix, Arizona

Why You Need To Go: You can trade Toronto in for the desert with a short flight to Phoenix, Arizona.

Here, you'll find vibrant red mountains, cactus-lined boulevards, and seemingly endless outdoor experiences, all under nearly perpetual sunshine.

Don't miss some of the region's iconic hiking spots , including the Hole in the Rock hike in Papago Park and the Pinnacle Peak Trail in Pinnacle Peak Park.

Flights are just 4 hours and 30 minutes with Air Canada.

St. Maarten

Why You Need To Go: Just 4 hours from Toronto between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea lies the island of St. Maaten, a unique territory in the heart of the Antilles.

With warm weather year-round, the charming island is an ideal getaway spot, whether you want to relax on pristine, white-sand beaches or you'd rather have an action-packed vacation.

On the island, enjoy spas, shopping, hiking, golfing and horseback riding; in the water, take part in snorkelling, windsurfing, sea-kayaking and fishing.

You can fly there direct from Toronto with Sunwing.

Belize City, Belize

Why You Need To Go: You don't need to travel far to experience lush rainforests, Mayan ruins, barrier reefs and swaying palm trees.

About a 4-and-a-half-hour flight from Toronto with WestJet, you can touch down in Belize City, the historical capital of Belize.

Here, you can explore temple ruins, relax at one of the many beautiful beaches in the area, and tour nearby islands.

The nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a great place to explore Belize's barrier reef and snorkel or dive with underwater wildlife.
