On the eastern shore of France’s largest freshwater lake, Aix-les-Bans is a chic Savoy resort that radiates old-world glamour. In the 19th century the lake, mountains and curative waters contributed to one of Europe’s most fashionable destinations.

1. Lac du Bourget

Aix-les-Bains is on the east shore of the largest natural lake in France.

Unlike many French lakes there’s no complete perimeter trail, and that’s because the mountains on the west shore plunge almost vertically to the water, which adds to the drama of the place.

But you can ramble to some remote spots to find hides where you can watch the lake’s waterfowl and raptors.

In summer you could have a dip these glacial waters at one of Aix-les-Bains’ three sandy beaches, while the marina can be your hub for water-skiing, diving  and sailing.

There’s also a directory full of companies offering guided or self-navigated canoe, kayak and paddleboard outings on the lake.

2. Musée Faure

In the 1940s the rich doctor Jean Faure bequeathed his stupendous art collection to Aix-les-Bains, and this is still the basis for the Musée Faure.

In it is France’s second best set of sculpture by Auguste Rodin and a top-notch array of impressionist painting.

Cézanne, Sisley, Degas and Pissarro all appear, along with earlier works by Camille Corot.

Johan Jongkind and Eugène Boudin, who are often seen as impressionism’s trailblazers.

There’s also a small display on the top floor about the poet Alphonse de Lamartine’s who lived in a predecessor to this building in the early-1800s.

3. Casino Grand Cercle

To infuse some Belle Époque pizazz into your trip you can play a few hands or spin the wheel at the Grand Cercle Casino.

In the 19th century you would have been in the company of Queen Victoria, the King of Greece and all sorts of other nobility and industrialists.

This was France’s first casino and even if you can’t afford to be a high roller it’s worth going in to get an eyeful of the art nouveau interior design.

This is opulent in the extreme, with gilt statues, marble floors, chandeliers and fine stained glass windows.

4. Esplanade du Lac

Few lakeside ambles could be as scenic as in this 10-hectare park right on the shore of the Lac du Bourget.

There are pollarded plane trees, large lawns for picnics and play areas for children.

But your eye will always be drawn to the opposite shore of the lake where the rugged slopes of the Dent du Chat rise up menacingly.

Pause here to meditate over the view and spot sights like the Hautecombe Abbey where members of the House of Savoy are buried.

5. Mont Revard

Constantly in the background at Aix-les-Bains is this mighty peak climbing above limestone cliffs.

In the winter there’s a ski station at the top, endowed with the largest network of cross-country trails in France (140 kilometres). In summer road cyclists try to tackle the ascent, which has been on the Tour de France route five times, most recently in 2013. There are also mountain biking hiking trails on the cross-country ski routes and a couple of “via ferratas”, guided climbing courses on the cliffs.

It’s been a long time since hydrotherapy was the main draw for tourists in Aix-les-Bains.

But you could make like a 19th-century aristocrat and book an afternoon of treatments at any of the spa centres in the resort.

One, Valvital has large indoor and outdoor pools fed by the local spring waters, which come through at 33°C. These waters are claimed to have therapeutic properties for complaints like arthritis, but are pleasant enough just to soak in for a little while, if you don’t mind adhering to the strict dress code.

Valvital also has an “aquagym” , sauna, hammam and the usual menu of massages and mud wraps.

7. Roman Ruins

These springs drew Roman settlers as long ago as the 1st century, and there are some fascinating clues about their presence around the resort today.

The most complete of Aix-les-Bains’ Roman structures is the Temple of Diana on Place Maurice-Mollard, one of only three intact temples in France.

If you join the “Balade dans Aix” guided tour in summer you can go inside to see the lapidary museum and get a feel for life in Aix in antiquity.

Also riveting is the Arch of Campanus, which may either have been a funerary arch or a grand portal to the ancient spa complex.

8. Belle Époque Architecture

The real golden age in Aix-les-Bains was the turn of the 20th century.

At this time an ensemble of regal hotels were built to cater to the venerated guests.

Most of these are now apartment buildings, but they’re listed as historic monuments and you can still ponder a dozen of them on a walking tour of the resort.

Hôtel Royal on Rue Georges-Ler was amongst the most extravagant and was built in 1914, while Beau-Site, Splendide, Excelsior and the Bernascon are all also majestic examples of the art nouveau style.

If you’re on a family holiday and rain is forecast, the lake’s aquarium will guarantee a couple of hours of entertainment for kids.

The tanks are mostly for freshwater species that occur naturally in the Lac du Bourget, as the aquarium takes part in conservation measures and monitors stocks.

There are pike, carp, blenny, eels, catfish and crayfish in these tanks, but children’s favourite part is the tactile pool.

Here they’ll be able to touch carp and sturgeon, while finding out about their diet and habits.

10. Town Hall

Another sight to cross off your list is Aix-les-Bains’ Hôtel de Ville, which was constructed in the 1500s and is right next to the Temple of Diana.

This building replaced an earlier feudal castle and was constructed for the Marquis d’Aix of the Seyssel House, which was prominent in the court of the Savoy Family.

The architecture here is Gothic, as you might tell from the mullioned windows and the stonework around its main entranceway.

In 1866 the castle was bought by Aix-les-Bains and has served as the town hall ever since.

11. Hautecombe Abbey

You can gaze at it from a distance on the Esplanade in Aix-les-Bains, but you can also cross the lake by boat to visit the old Cistercian monastery at Hautecombe Abbey.

There’s a jetty just in front of the monument so it could hardly be easier in summer, while the serpentine drive around the southern shore of the lake is also an unforgettable way to get there.

At the monastery you’ll be handed a detailed and clear audio-guide, and there’s even recorded content for kids.

The location, on a promontory before dark wooded slopes, is out of this world.

But there’s volumes of history to investigate, most of all in the Necropolis of the Savoy House, where a long line of powerful medieval rulers are buried.

12. Dent du Chat

Probably the best of all the lakeside walks, it will take around 20 minutes to get round to the southwest shore of the lake to begin your ascent on this 1,400-metre peak.

The Dent du Chat’s rugged appearance is a little deceptive as the trail is pretty easy-going, and on the last few metres there are cables to help you make your way through the steepest part of the hike.

If you’re calves and butt are burning at this point the energising panoramas at the summit will bring you back to life.

The lake is stunning from this angle, but if you look up you’ll be able to see as far as Mont Blanc.

13. Musilac

In mid-July the largest pop/rock festival in the entire Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region unfolds on the lake shore at Aix-les-Bains.

The event was set up in 2002 and has grown year on year, now packing in more than 80,000 spectators.

The line up tends to be strong every year, and couples world-famous artists and acts like Muse, Elton John, David Guetta and Placebo with up-and-coming bands from  France and around the world.

Businesses in the town take part in the spectacle; for instance the Lac du Bourget boat company provides special cruises that let you watch shows from the water.

14. Chambéry

In 20 minutes you can be in this medieval city, which has a different and perhaps younger ambience to Aix-les-Bains.

Chambéry’s not a huge place, but thanks to the university the centre is one of the most densely inhabited in France, and there’s nightlife to be found on the labyrinth of streets that scuttle away from the main squares.

For sights you’ve got the Fontaine des éléphants, commemorating the Comte de Boinge, a high-flying general during Napleon’s rule.

The Gothic Château des Ducs de Savoie was where the Savoy line called the shots in medieval times.

15. Gastronomy

When the ski industry took off in Savoy in the 1950s fondue soon followed, and the dish is now a regional speciality.

Fondue savoyarde is made with beaufort cheese, which is really the French version of Gruyère.

Diot, meanwhile, is the name given to a variety of sausages, both cured and served hot in dishes.

Diot with boiled potatoes or polenta is very typical here, and when eaten cold it goes great with Dijon mustard.

Finally tartiflette is a satisfying winter dish composed of potatoes, soft reblochon cheese, onions and lardons, and pairs very well with a glass of Jura’s Chignin white wine.

France This Way review: Aix-les-Bains is a very attractive town and well worth a visit if you are exploring the area. Much of its interest dates to the 19th century, the most prosperous era in the town's history and the time that Aix-les-Bains revived its Roman role as a spa town.

Wandering around Aix les Bains you will see lots of wonderful buildings dating from the Belle Epoque. With the revival of spa towns in the late 19th and early 20th century many grand hotels were built as well as the spa baths, the Casino and the Chateau de la Roche du Roi. (The chateau is on the hillside above the town, and is in a curious melange of architectural styles that I won't even try to describe!).

Start your visit at the Ancient Thermes, the Atrium, that were built in 1776 then enlarged in 1854 and 1932. Their dominant style is of the Art Deco era and the large hall of the Atrium now houses the Aix-les-Bains tourist office.

Another wonderful building in the Belle Epoque style is the Grand Cercle casino, that positively sparkles in the sun. The interior decor contains lots of mosaics, sculptures and large glass windows and you can see the wonderful mosaic ceiling and a theatre in the French Romantic style.

In the Place Maurice Mollard opposite the Atrium, the Arc de Campanus is a roman funeral arch which is nine metres tall: the stone arch was built in the 1st century. Its exact role is not known but it is thought to be either an entrance arch to the Thermes (Aix was a Spa town even in Roman times), or a victory arch or possibly even a funeral arch. It certainly adds charm and interest to the Place Maurice Mollard.

The mairie (town hall) for Aix-les-Bains is housed in the ancient Chateau of Seysset, a lovely gothic castle. Next to here is the site of a Roman temple parts of which can still be seen.

Also worth looking out as you explore the town are the wonderful old hotels built in Belle Epoque style. These are no longer hotels but private appartments and include the Royal, the Splendide, the Beauregard and the Grand Hotel.

In a villa from the same epoch, you can visit the Museum of Doctor Faure to see an interesting selection of paintings from the last two centuries (includes works by Pissaro and Cézanne) and a very impressive collection of Rodin statues.

While it is still very popular as a spa town today, tourist activities are playing an increasingly important role, especially those related to activities on the lake - hence the most popular stroll through Aix-les-Bains is the pretty walk along the edge of the lake, the Promenade du Lac.

The town has the largest inland port in France with beaches and numerous water-based activities from canoeing to water-skiing.

Many towns in France are classified Ville Fleurie (town of flowers) but Aix-les-Bains is one of only a few to have the '4 flowers' level of award as well as national prizes for its flowers. As part of this, there are several large parks and gardens to visit, including the Parc Floral des Thermes, the substantial Parc of Bois Vidal, and the banks of the lake.

Market days in Aix les Bain are all day Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Places to visit nearby

With its olive trees, mimosas and banana palms and lakeside position, the nearby village of Brison-les-Oliviers makes you feel like you have just stepped onto the Mediterranean.

Also close to Aix-les-Bains, the Chatillon castle dates to the 13th century and at Bourget-du-Lac there is a pleasant garden next to a priory: the garden is classed as a 'jardin remarquable'.

Aix-les-Bains is a town and lakeside resort in the French Alps , in the department of Savoie . With more than 30,000 inhabitants, this tourist and thermal spa resort welcomes nearly 200,000 visitors each year. In 2016, the city branded itself "Aix-les-Bains, Riviera des Alpes".

A leading town of the Belle Époque, of international renown, Aix-les-Bains was a vacation destination for nobility and the wealthy. The hot springs made it one of the most famous resorts in the world. Thanks to its historic centre and several squares and listed monuments, the town is labeled "Ville d'art et d'histoire" (City of Art and History)

In addition, Aix is ​​located on the edge of the largest natural lake of glacial origin in France, the Lac du Bourget, and has the largest freshwater port in France.

The town has been granted four Flowers and a Golden Flower (high distinction) at the national Council of flowery towns and villages.

According to a ranking on "Europe's Best Destinations" website, it is considered as the fifth most romantic city in Europe.

The town hosts many cultural events including "Musilac", the largest pop-rock festival in the region attracting tens of thousands of festival-goers for one night each July.

The town is also one of the most sporting in France: about one inhabitant in three is a member of a sports club. More than fifty different sports can be practiced in this town located between lake and mountains.

Aix-les-Bains is accessible by many roads. The A41 motorway serves the north and south of Aix with two exits. The town lies between Annecy in the north and Chambéry in the south.

The town is connected to Paris by TGV, as well as Lyon , Annecy , Chambéry and Geneva by TER.

By plane [ edit ]

The nearest airport is Chambéry-Savoie, a few kilometers south of the town.

Canoe/kayak [ edit ]

The north of Lake Bourget ( Portout , Conjux , Chatillon ), the Upper Rhone and the Savières Canal that connects them, lend themselves nicely to the casual Canoeing. Browse the lagoons in silence, observe the many birds nesting between Chautagne and Marais de Lavours, gettin up close to the fauna of the abundant reed-beds, and even seeing the beavers before their characteristic dive, are among the attractions of this preserved territory. Canoeing activity is regulated by a charter of "good practice" so as not to disturb the ecosystem. If you do not have your own equipment, you can rent it at Camping de Saumont 3 * 73310 Ruffieux.

For more energetic canoe sports, the French Canoeing Federation organises a marathon each spring on the Rhone between Seyssel and Yenne, and the Nautical Station of Lake Bourget also organises multiple events including the now famous "Translac".

Many scuba diving sites are listed either from the edge with access by car or drop off access by boat. Be aware that even for experienced divers, Le Bourget is a dangerous environment and it is better to contact a local club who will be more aware of the hazards.

What to see in Aix-les-Bains, Savoie

Aix-les-Bains is a spa resort in the French département of Savoie  between  Annecy  and Chambéry in the French Alps . Bordered by Lake Bourget, the town enjoys a beautiful spot surrounded by spectacular mountains. On my last visit  to Aix-les-Bains, I was impressed by the elegant houses from the Belle Époque era. You’ll find below the itinerary I followed in the town centre.

Why you should stop at Aix-les-Bains

Aix-les-Bains (pop. 28,500) is ideally situated between two spectacular mountains: the Revard and the Mont du Chat. The town is part of the province of Savoie  and is bordered by one of France’s purest lakes: Lac du Bourget. Aix enjoys a micro-climate which is why you might be surprised to see lush Mediterranean vegetation here and there, from palm trees in front of the Casino to lavender and olive trees in the gardens of exclusive private mansions. While strolling in the town centre, you’ll probably feel (like I did) a kind of Italian feel. The railings of the balconies and the pastel façades did remind me of Italy… after all this is not too surprising considering that before 1860 Aix and Savoie were part of the Italian world!

The waters of Aix have been renowned since Roman times for their healing qualities.

My itinerary to discover Aix-les-Bains

The old town is not very spread out so you should be able to see most of it within half a day. There are covered car parks found near the Town-Hall (Place Maurice Mollard), rue Davat and rue du Casino. Alternatively you can park your car on Place Georges Clemenceau and walk up the shopping street of rue de Genève. This is where I started my discovery walk.

First, walk up rue de Genève.

This is Aix’ main shopping street. You can already spot some fine buildings with elegant balconies that were built in the late 19th century.

Walk straight ahead to Place Carnot.

The pedestrian square was built on the main road from Geneva to Chambéry. During the Middle-Ages it was situated half-way between the two entrance gates. It is bordered by some fine buildings, including the Hôtel Métropole.

Turn left on rue des Bains and reach place des Thermes.

The lovely fountain at the centre of the place des Thermes is topped by a little statue which was acquired by the municipal council in 1928 from a local antique dealer.

The square is bordered by the prestigious Astoria hotel, built by Swiss architects in 1904-1905. This is the last Grand Hôtel still in operation. The others have been converted into flats since 1945.

Cross the square and go under the Arch of Campanus.

The Arch of Campanus

This is a great testimony of Roman presence in Aix, then known as Aquae (this is similar to Aix-en-Provence and Aix-la-Chapelle or Aachen). The 9.15 m high monument was probably built in the 1st century AD when Romans settled there for the local hot springs. The original purpose of the arch is unknown: it may have been erected as a funerary arch, a triumphal arch, or more likely as a monumental door opening onto the thermal baths.

Go to the old thermal baths and enter the hall.

This monumental building of the Thermes Pellegrini is one of the two thermal baths that makes the national baths of Aix-les-Bains. Its façade is divided into large bays comprising three windows with round arches. Have a look inside to see the great hall, a superb example of Art Deco.

You will find inside the building the Tourist Information Centre of Aix-les-Bains where you can grab some touristic brochures and ask for general enquiries about the town and its surroundings.

Enter the public gardens of Parc Thermal for a moment of peace and quiet!

The beautiful floral park has old and rare trees. In summer, the theatre of greenery  welcomes open-air concerts.

Head towards the City-Hall.

It looks like a castle? Well, it is a castle, dating back to the 15th century. Today it houses the City-Hall of Aix.

Backing the town hall are the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple, known as the Temple de Diane (Temple of Diana). It has been converted into an archaeological museum, the Lapidary museum, which can be visited on a guided tour.

Walk down the square du Temple de Diane where you’ll find some typical French-style cafés. Once on place Carnot, turn left on rue Albert 1er.

We are back on the old road that connected Geneva to Chambéry in the Middle Ages. In the past it was known as rue de Chambéry… before being renamed in honour to Albert I, king of Belgium for its heroic courage during WWI. I love this narrow street with its boutiques, cafés and restaurants. 

The Casino Grand Cercle

This is arguably the most opulent building I’ve seen in Aix. It was first built by Pellegrini in 1850 and inaugurated by Victor-Emmanuel, King of Sardinia-Piedmont and Duke of Savoy… at a time where Aix-les-Bains was not French!

You have to enter in to marvel at the extraordinary Belle Époque-style interior design. This kind of decoration (mosaics, sculptures and glass-windows) would be expected in Paris but maybe not in an average-size town in Provincial France. Let’s remember that Aix welcomed the aristocracy in the 19th century: Queen Victoria (on three occasions), a maharajah from India, the Emperor of Brazil, Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary (the popular “Sissi”).

At the rear of the casino are the Japanese gardens.

This exquisite garden was created in 1998 at the occasion of the Year of Japan in France. It symbolises the friendship between France and Japan.

Walk back to the Place Georges Clemenceau via rue du Casinon and rue de Genève.

How to get to Aix-les-Bains and other tips

• By road – Aix-les-Bains is easily accessible by motorway from: Geneva (A1, 70kms), Annecy (A41, 35kms), Chambéry (A41, 19kms), Grenoble (73kms) and Lyon (113kms). Paris is 575kms away.
• By train – The town is serviced by trains from Chambéry, Annecy, Lyon and Paris (3hr journey).
• If you have time to explore Aix-les-Bains, make sure to visit the Faure Museum set in a Roman-style villa. It contains a fine collection of paintings and sculptures. This is where you’ll admire Rodin’s biggest collection after the Rodin Museum in Paris.
• Also have a look at the former Grand Hotel buildings . Although the luxury palaces have been converted into flats a long time ago, the buildings are still majestic to look at: the Splendide, Excelsior, Bernascon, Beau Site… 
• Outside the limits of the town centre, perched on a hill, stands the Château de la Roche du Roi . This is a jewel of the Belle Époque style which is currently under restoration. 
• The lake front is worth a visit – but this will be included in another post!

Lake on one side, mountains on the other, it’s hard not to be dazzled by Lac du Bourget’s almost perfect topography. The drama is heightened by a location sandwiched between the Jura mountains and undulating Upper Rhône vineyards. From le Grand Port , flotillas of bateaux tootle the north-south axis of the submarine-shaped lake and you can gaze across the water to ancient chapels, abbeys, hiking trails and cols. Not only is the lake France’s largest (depending on the season), but it’s also the deepest at 145m. Experts divers can even scuba to see a submerged Nazi Germany fighter plane at a murky depth of 112m.

Big things are happening in a little corner of the city. A five-year project is underway to restore the city’s ancient thermal baths and there's a landmark museum in the pipeline. The city's subterranean historic ruins are soon set to reopen to the public for the first time in decades. Until then, you can see mythological mosaics, the handsome Le Soufre sulphur spring and sneak a glimpse of the original Roman thermal baths — all hidden inside the official tourist office on Place Maurice Mollard. On the same theme, the Musée Lapidaire , an ancient Gallo-Roman temple, houses a treasure trove of archaeological artefacts.

Hautecombe Abbey is the sort of place that makes you want to run away to become a monk. The former 12th-century Cistercian monastery, later a Benedictine sanctuary, was the burial place of members of the House of Savoy — the all-conquering French royal dynasty, which ruled Sardinia, Sicily, Italy and Spain. After the French Revolution, the remaining monks were forced to leave and the abbey was turned into china factory. It has since been returned to its former glory. Walk among the ghosts of the last Savoy king and queens, gawp at the insanely-brilliant Gothic-troubadour architecture, ponder the murals, marble sculptures and cenotaphs, or simply savour the views from the lakeside lawn.

Unlike two of France’s other main spa towns – Dax and Evian – in its heyday Aix-les-Bains was a circus of casinos and luxury hotels. Thomas Cook included it on his Grand Tour of Europe, using the town as a staging post between Paris and Italy, and English aristocrats and Queen Victoria followed suit. She visited three times, and today, you can check out the faded grandeur of the now-closed Grand Hôtel, the first luxury residence to open in the city in 1857 or play roulette and blackjack amid the grand architecture of the still-swinging Art Nouveau Casino Grand Cercle .

There’s Hotel Adelphia , The Institute & Spa Aix-les-Bains Domaine de Marlioz , Mercure Hotel and Spa Aix Les Bains Domaine de Marlioz , Les Suites du Lac and Valvital’s Thermes Chevalley Aix-les-Bains . That's just a small selection – there's almost too many to count, in fact, and all have thermal pools, hammams, saunas and solariums. Indeed, there’s a sense that leaving preened and polished is compulsory.

Aix-Les-Bains: History, sights & thermal spas at the ‘Riviera of the Alps’

The lakeside city of Aix-les-Bains has attracted the rich and well-to-to for centuries. From the ancient Romans to U.K.’s Queen Victoria, the Aix-les-Bains has been famous throughout the centuries for its wondrous natural thermal springs that beckon visitors from far and wide.

Known as the ‘Riviera of the Alps’, Aix-les-Bains is located in the formerly independent duchy of Savoy in the Alpine region of France, near the border with Switzerland and Italy. The town of Aix-les-Bains is just a few miles from Annecy and the French Alps within the Lac du Bourget region, leading to some breathtakingly beautiful natural landscapes all around.

In winter, it attracts skiers from across the world with its snow-covered pistes and picturesque mountain views. And if you’re looking for a summer getaway, this is equally beautiful because you can go hiking and swimming in the lakes in this region.

There is lots to see and do, whether you’re into history or sports, with lots of little restaurants and boutiques to enjoy. So let’s explore the best things to see and do in Aix-les-Bains, shall we? Allons-y!

6. Local specialties

The area around Aix-les-Bains has been inhabited for centuries. The Celtic Gauls established a settlement in the area, which was then inhabited by the and the conquering Romans in the 1st century AD. The town with its Aquae (“water” in Latin and French), was an important settlement to provide water to its soldiers.

In the Middle Ages, Aix-les-Bains was a small village with a population of only a few hundred people. In the 17th century, Aix-les-Bains grew in fame as people became aware of the value of its thermal hot springs. The physician Jean Baptiste Cabias wrote extensively about it, claiming even that King Henri IV loved his thermal baths.

The city was at its height in the 19th century, when the royal family of Napoleon Bonaparte (both his 1st wife and 2nd wife, sister and step-daughter) would regularly make way to Aix-les-Bains.

It would be Napoleon who would claim the Duchy of Savoy (and Aix-les-Bains with it) for France, on his way to conquer Italy. After several wars and back and forth, it was finally annexed by France in 1860.

And as for Queen Victoria, she visited Aix-les-Bains three times upon the advice of her daughter, Princess Beatrice. She made it so famous, the city put up a small bust of her, along with a British flag and a London telephone box to remind visitors of the royal connection.

Other famous royals in Aix-les-Bains have included Empress Sissi of Austria, various members of Belgian and Dutch royalty. Among the writers’ set were Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas , Honoré de Balzac, and George Sand, as well as musicians Edith Piaf and Charles Aznavour all coming to Aix for its famous baths.

These days with a population of around 30,000, it is an enchantingly small town in the heart of the French Alps.

Best things to do

1. arc de campanus.

Right in the heart of the Aix-les-Bains is the oldest monument in Aix-les-Bains. Arc de Campanus is thought to have been erected in 1 AD by the Romans .

The Romans enjoyed hot springs very much, and regularly frequented cities like neighbouring Briançon , as well as Aix-en-Provence and Gréoux-les-Bains in the south, which all have natural hot springs.

It is not clear however what the function of Arc De Campanus was. While some historians believe it to be a funerary arch, others believe that its location near the thermal spas mean that it was a type of city gate.

2. Thermal spas

Spa treatments are very big in France, with thegovernment paying for spa treatments called “the cure”, for medical conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, obesity, etc.

There are a couple of large thermal spa resorts around Aix-les-Bains, using natural spring waters. The water contains calcium sulphide and is rich in trace elements of magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, iodine, zinc, aluminum and copper.

It is advertised as being good for anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic, anti-infectious, anti-allergic and anti-oxidant actions, but as with all things, you have to take it with a grain of salt.

The closest spa to the city center is Thermes Chevalley Valvital , that is in the haute (“high”) part of town. A bit further outside of Aix, on a property covering 10 hectares, is the Thermes de Marlioz .

Both offer all types of cures and treatments, and so reservations do have to be made in advance to get the correct trained professional.

3. Faure muséum

Just outside the city center (about a 10 minute walk) is the small art museum, called Musée Fauvre.

Founded in 1949, the museum is named after Dr Jean Faure, a local art lover, who bequeathed 220 impressionist and pre-impressionist works to the city of Aix-les-Bains.

Today the museum has grown and is considered to have the 2nd largest permanent collection in France of works by Rodin (after the Rodin museum in Paris), and the 2nd largest collection of impressionist paintings from France (after Musée d’Orsay ).

From Degas to Cézanne and Pissarro, many of France’s greatest artists are featured here. It also holds several temporary exhibitions during the year. Tickets are around €5/adult while children under 18 are free.

4. Casino Grand Cercle

For spa goers who need something to do in the evenings, Aix-les-Bains has two large casinos Casino Grand Cercle and Nouveau Casino (meaning “New Casino”).

Casino Grand Cercle is right next to the old district of Aix, and was inaugurated by Victor-Emmanuel II of Savoie in 1850. (A few years later he would give up the duchy of Savoy to become King of Italy in 1861.)

With a ballroom and a theatre in there at one point, the casino today holds nearly 200 slot machines, French roulette, English roulette, blackjack and several other card tables.

5. Lac du Bourget

If you have ever wanted to cycle around an entire lake, here is your chance. Lac du Bourget is around 11 miles (18km) long and has wide cycle paths all around.

With boating and other water sports regularly available in a temperate climate, you may want to bring a swimsuit.

There are also several small sandy beaches along the lake and the nearby Massif des Bauges mountain is a great place for a hike.

The Dukes of Savoy may be long gone, but Savoyard traditions remain strong in Aix-les-Bains. There are many classic French cheeses that originate from this region, like the réblochon and beaufort.

There are plenty of restaurants in the area offering a local speciality called the tartiflette , which involves potatoes topped with copious amounts of cheese.

The traditional recipe include bacon lardons , but you can easily find other vegetarian options such as mushrooms, etc.

Enjoy it with a red  Vin de Savoie , to keep with the savoyard theme. You can also have a traditional  digestif  like the Genepi  to wash it all down after the meal. You can read more about Alpine foods and drinks here.

How to get to Aix-Les-Bains?

Aix-les-Bains is easily accessible by train. From Paris, you can take the high-speed TGV train to Lyon, before switching to a TER train to Aix-les-Bains. The closest airports are in  Chambéry ,  Grénoble  and Geneva.

How easy is it getting around?

The historic center of Aix-les-Bains is a few miles away from Lake Bourget, so you will need a car (or bike) to travel between the two.

How many days should you spend?

One day is enough to see the sights, however if you wish to enjoy a bit of spa time, I would recommend staying overnight.

Where should you stay?

I would recommend staying in the center so that you can walk to all the sights of the city.
