Quotes to remember a loved one

While acts such as creating memorials , writing letters or dedicating spaces can be powerful ways to honor the memory of a loved one who has passed away, sometimes an act just isn't enough. Verbal expressions of remembrance can provide emotional comfort and solidarity when dealing with grief. Talking about someone who has passed away in positive terms can help keep their legacy alive and remind you of the good times we shared with them. Verbal expressions may also be more accessible for some people - not everyone is able to create a physical memorial or dedicate space due to financial constraints or other reasons. Whether it's through stories, quotes or unique phrases that capture the essence of our cherished memories, verbal expressions are a way to keep your loved ones close and ensure they are never forgotten. Here are some phrases to build from when thinking of memorial quotes.

  • "Their legacy will live on forever."
  • "Their memory will always be cherished."
  • "They may not be with us in person, but their spirit lives on."
  • "Even though they're gone, their impact on our lives remains."
  • "The world was a better place because of them and we won't forget it."
  • "Though they're no longer here, their love still surrounds us."
  • "We'll miss them every day, but their memory will never fade away."
  • "Their light may have dimmed, but it will continue to shine through us."

  • "It's hard saying goodbye to somebody who has made such an impact in our life, but it's comforting knowing that even though they aren't with us physically anymore, we carry them with us wherever we go.” 14."Every time I think of you, I smile. Thank you for leaving behind so many happy memories.”
  • "Your absence leaves a void in my heart, but your memories fill that space.”

Never forgotten poems

While shorter quotes are useful for something like a tattoo, you may want to consider posting a longer memory to express your remembrance of your loved one. These poems are popular choices when it comes to honoring the memory of a loved one

"Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep" by Mary Elizabeth Frye: "Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow."

"Remember Me" by David Harkins "Do not shed tears when I have gone but smile instead because I have lived. Do not shut your eyes and pray to God that I'll come back but open your eyes and see all that I have left behind. I know your heart will be empty because you cannot see me but still I want you to be full of the love we shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live only for yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of what happened between us yesterday. You can remember me and grieve that I have gone or you can cherish my memory and let it live on. You can cry and lose yourself, become distraught and turn your back on the world or you can do what I want - Smile, wipe away the tears, learn to love again and go on."

"The Dash" by Linda Ellis: "I read of a man who stood to speak At the funeral of a friend He referred to the dates on her tombstone From the beginning to the end. He spoke of the memories they shared"

"An Angel's Handprint" by Bambi Edwards: "When an angel comes around, A handprint may be found. On your heart or in your mind, This print is one of a kind."

These poems offer different perspectives on how you can remember your loved ones after they have passed away, while also emphasizing their enduring influence in you and your loved ones’ lives.

Meaning of 我不曾忘记 (I’ve Never Forgotten) by ChiliChill

The song "我不曾忘记 (I’ve Never Forgotten)" by ChiliChill seems to explore themes of nostalgia, hope, and the enduring nature of love and friendship. The lyrics paint vivid imagery of personal experiences and emotions, creating a sense of longing and introspection.

In the first verse, the narrator references a broken wooden box filled with withered flowers, which could represent past memories and emotions. They express a desire to let go of the past and embrace new aspirations, using the metaphor of flying high and casting a net of dreams to catch echoes of love.

The second verse introduces the theme of loneliness and fear, addressing a lone child and assuring them that the darkness won't last forever. The reference to plucking flowers from a precipice symbolizes taking risks or facing challenges for the sake of someone dear, hoping that each petal removed represents a decrease in sadness.

The pre-chorus suggests that nature, represented by grass and gravel, is honest and genuine, reminding the narrator of their inner light and guiding them through life's journey. This could imply finding solace and clarity in simple things and being true to oneself.

The chorus repeats the question "是你嗎? (Is it you?)" multiple times, indicating a yearning for connection and companionship. It describes the act of lighting up flower buds with moonlight on the way home, playing ancient melodies to drive away nightmares, and weaving rainwater from the sky into a blue roof as promises made between individuals who have yet to grow up.

The third verse alludes to a thousand nightmares exchanged for a thousand thieves, suggesting that past difficulties and hardships may be traded for the theft of sorrow. In a turning point represented by an overturned hourglass, it is implied that good memories can replace bad ones. The lyrics contemplate whether time is eternal or finite in the face of love and lasting connections.

The second pre-chorus touches on the idea of growing up and forgetting dreams and fairy tales but emphasizes a longing to reunite with someone, particularly on rainy afternoons. This intimates that some memories and feelings are deeply ingrained and not easily forgotten.

The bridge introduces a new perspective from the Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. They mention someone crossing a flower ocean and approaching the narrator, who still remembers their unfinished wishes. This indicates an encounter with someone who has a profound impact on the narrator's life, suggesting that the song may also touch on the theme of destiny and the interconnectedness of souls.

The final chorus, sung by Greater Lord Rukkhadevata and Aranaras, expresses a mixture of emotions. It portrays someone wearing a floral crown and holding pristine branches, symbolizing purity and beauty. The line about tearing off a piece of clothing to illuminate the flowers in a box implies offering light or guidance for the narrator. It also alludes to someone who may have disappeared but is still remembered, demonstrating the lasting impact they had. The repetition of "我不會忘 (I won't forget)" reinforces the sentiment of never forgetting significant relationships and experiences.

Overall, "我不曾忘记 (I’ve Never Forgotten)" explores themes of nostalgia, longing, and the enduring power of memories and connections. It depicts a journey of self-reflection, acknowledging past experiences and the impact of others on one's life while looking towards the future with hope.

One such quote on love and loss is by Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet, who said, "The wound is the place where the Light enters you." This profound statement encapsulates the idea that even in the midst of heartbreak, there is an opportunity for growth and healing. It reminds us that our pain can be a catalyst for transformation, allowing us to become stronger and more resilient.

Another quote on this theme is from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, a Swiss-American psychiatrist, who said, "The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not 'get over' the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again, but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same, nor would you want to."

Quotes on Perseverance and Strength

These quotes remind us of the power within ourselves to overcome obstacles and rise above adversity. One powerful quote on perseverance and strength comes from Maya Angelou, an American poet and civil rights activist, who said, "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." These words serve as a reminder that setbacks are not the end of the road but rather opportunities for growth and self-discovery.

Another quote on this theme is by Helen Keller, an American author and disability rights advocate, who said, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Another quote on this theme is from Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Inc., who said, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." This quote encourages us to pursue our passions and find meaning in our work, reminding us that a life well-lived is one that is aligned with our values and brings us joy.

We can set up a small corner with a comfortable chair, a journal, and a collection of our favorite quotes. Each day, we can spend a few moments sitting in this space, reading a quote, and reflecting on its meaning in relation to our lives.

Another approach is to carry a pocket-sized notebook or use a note-taking app on our smartphones to jot down quotes that resonate with us throughout the day. Whenever we come across a quote that speaks to our hearts, we can write it down and revisit it during our moments of reflection.

Sharing Quotes with Others

Quotes have a profound impact not just on ourselves but also on those around us. Sharing meaningful quotes can create connections, spark conversations, and inspire others. Another way to share quotes is by incorporating them into our daily conversations. Whether it's during a casual chat with a friend or a formal presentation at work, we can sprinkle these quotes into our speech, adding depth and inspiration to our interactions. • Poems About Never Forgetting a Loved One

Losing a loved one is an immensely painful experience, and the fear of forgetting them can sometimes be overwhelming. Poetry has long been a way for people to express their deepest emotions, and there are countless poems that beautifully capture the sentiment of never forgetting a loved one. These poems serve as a reminder that memories can be cherished and kept alive even when the physical presence of someone we hold dear is no longer with us.

1. "Remember" by Christina Rossetti

2. "do not stand at my grave and weep" by mary elizabeth frye, 3. "when i am dead, my dearest" by christina rossetti, 4. "she is gone" by david harkins.

"Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay."

Christina Rossetti's poignant poem "Remember" speaks directly to the fear of being forgotten. The poet asks to be remembered after their passing, acknowledging that physical separation is inevitable. Through her powerful words, Rossetti captures the longing for remembrance that many of us feel when we think of those we have lost.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow."

Mary Elizabeth Frye's poem is a comforting reminder that our loved ones are never truly gone. In "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep," Frye beautifully expresses the idea that those we have lost continue to exist in the world around us. The poem encourages us to find solace in nature and to seek the presence of our loved ones in the beauty that surrounds us.

"When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree."

Christina Rossetti's "When I Am Dead, My Dearest" is a gentle reminder that our departed loved ones would want us to find joy and happiness even after they are gone. The poem urges the reader not to mourn excessively but instead to cherish the memories shared and move forward with a light heart.

"You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived."

David Harkins' poem "She Is Gone" beautifully encapsulates the idea that the best way to honor a loved one is to celebrate their life rather than dwell on their absence. The poem encourages us to find happiness in the memories we hold and to cherish the time we had with our loved ones rather than focusing on the pain of their departure.

These poems, among countless others, serve as a reminder that the bonds we form with our loved ones are never truly broken. While the pain of loss can be overwhelming, the power of poetry allows us to hold on to the memories and ensure that those we cherish are never forgotten. Whether it is through words that speak directly to our emotions or those that inspire us to find solace in nature, these poems provide comfort and reassurance that the love we shared with our loved ones will endure.

‘Song of Myself’: A Poem by Walt Whitman

‘Song of Myself’ is perhaps the definitive achievement of the great nineteenth-century American poet Walt Whitman (1819-92), so we felt that it was a good choice for the second in our ‘post a poem a day’ feature. ‘Song of Myself’ is long, but well worth devoting ten or fifteen minutes to reading, whether you’re familiar with Whitman’s distinctive and psalmic free verse style or new to the world of Walt Whitman’s poetry. Below is the 1892 version of the poem, completed shortly before Whitman’s death in the same year.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. Especially on this day in this era, as those of us in America work to keep our foundation and legacy healthy.

When I was a teacher, I used the following passage all the time. Recently I sent it to one son. When I left teaching, students gave me a gift: Leaves of Grass. My son emailed me – “Where did you find this?” so I sent him a link to this page.

Here’s the passage:

I know I have the best of time and space, and was never measured and never will be measured. I tramp a perpetual journey, (come listen all!) My signs are a rain-proof coat, good shoes, and a staff cut from the woods, No friend of mine takes his ease in my chair, I have no chair, no church, no philosophy, I lead no man to a dinner-table, library, exchange, But each man and each woman of you I lead upon a knoll, My left hand hooking you round the waist, My right hand pointing to landscapes of continents and the public road. Not I, not any one else can travel that road for you, You must travel it for yourself.

Finding the right words to express your feelings at a memorial or funeral is often difficult. Fortunately, you don’t necessarily need to rely solely on your own words. For example, it’s not uncommon for people to include inspirational “gone, but not forgotten” quotes in eulogies. Sometimes others can express our feelings more succinctly, clearly, and beautifully than we can.

Jump ahead to these sections:

‘gone, but not forgotten’ poems for mom or dad, ‘gone, but not forgotten’ poems for siblings, ‘gone, but not forgotten’ poems for friends, ‘gone, but not forgotten’ poems for a spouse or partner, ‘gone, but not forgotten’ poems for a child.

“Gone, but not forgotten” poems can serve the same purpose. Along with helping you confidently speak at a funeral or memorial, these types of poems may also offer comfort and wisdom to other mourners.

The following are a few examples to consider. Whether you’re mourning a lost parent, sibling, friend, lover, or child, at least one of them may perfectly embody your thoughts and emotions.

Tip: If you'd like more help navigating the complicated process of losing a loved one, our post-loss checklist is here to help.

Parents shape our lives. Thus, we can’t possibly forget them after they pass. These poems emphasize this truth.

1. "If I Should Go" by Joyce Grenfell

Parents often give their children instructions for living a good life. Thus, this is a powerful “gone, but not forgotten” poem for a parent, as it tells the listener to “weep if you must” but “sing as well.” The best way to remember a lost parent is to keep them in your heart and live a happy life.

2. “He is Gone (Remember Me)” by David Harkins

This popular modern funeral poem encourages mourners to look back and celebrate a life well-lived, instead of focusing solely on the painful feelings a lost loved one’s absence may cause. It’s ideal for a parent’s funeral because it focuses on the loss of someone who lived a reasonably long life and played a significant role in others’ lives.

3. “The Broken Chain” by Ron Tranmer

“The Broken Chain” is another powerful funeral poem for a mother or father because it describes how we may never lose the guidance of someone who helped us grow in life if we remember them and the lessons they shared after they’re gone.

4. "Gone, But Not Forgotten" by Ellen Brenneman

With that title, this poem was certainly going to show up somewhere on this list. The poem itself shares a beautiful message of hope. It states that death is not an ending, but simply a transition to a happier and more peaceful stage of existence. Thus, it’s also an ideal rest in peace poem.

A sibling can be one of your closest friends. Although that makes losing them painful, these poems remind us that we can still keep them in our hearts and memories.

5. “I Fall Asleep” by Samuel Butler

“I Fall Asleep” is a short but powerful expression of the idea that a lost friend or sibling would want us to remember them by keeping their spirit alive in our own “thoughts and deeds.”

6. "The New Life’s Salutation" by Anna Barabauld

This gentle poem admits that feeling some grief after the passing of someone with whom you’ve shared many happy years is understandable. However, after you’ve mourned, you should remember them and assume that instead of saying “goodbye” now, you’ll get the chance to say “good morning” again sometime down the road.

7. “Farewell” by Anne Bronte

This inspirational poem reminds us that part of not forgetting a lost close friend or sibling can involve celebrating the fact that death can never undo the good they did in the world while they were here.

8. "Last Journey" by Timothy Coote

This poem’s metaphor may comfort a mourning sibling. It describes how someone’s death isn’t an end. They’ve merely boarded an earlier train, but eventually, you’ll join them at their destination, and in the meantime, you have happy memories to look back on.

Losing a close friend may feel like losing a part of yourself. However, these poems suggest you may not completely lose a friend if you remember them.

9. "Afterglow" by Helen Lowrie Marshall

Sometimes, the most effective poems are those which quickly but powerfully express simple emotional messages. For example, “Afterglow” by Helen Lowrie Marshall emphasizes the importance of remembering someone who has passed on by reflecting on happy memories of them.

10. “Consolation” by Robert Louis Stevenson

This is a very comforting example of a “gone, but not forgotten” poem, as it suggests that remembering a lost friend should be a happy experience, because you may meet again in another stage of existence.

11. “They That Love Beyond the World” by William Penn

William Penn’s encouraging “They That Love Beyond the World” is another poem that claims lost friends have simply moved on to another place. Because they are immortal, not only can we never forget them, but we can also never truly lose them.

12. "Remember Me" by Margaret Mead

Many comforting poems about death can help us find peace by suggesting a friend’s passing doesn’t erase them from existence completely. For instance, this poem shares the idea that merely remembering someone and keeping them in your thoughts is a way to keep them “alive” in a sense.

Losing a spouse or partner is often a uniquely painful experience, but one you can cope with by looking back on the times you shared with joy and love. These poems can help you remember this.

13. "But Not Forgotten" by Dorothy Parker

This poem’s title isn’t the only reason it earns a spot on this list. In “But Not Forgotten,” the poem’s speaker poignantly explains how the person they’re addressing will remember them with such fondness after they’re gone that they’ll feel the need to share stories about them with future romantic partners.

14. “I Carry Your Heart With Me (I Carry it in My Heart)” by E.E. Cummings

As this poem suggests, while a person may need to move on eventually after a romantic partner’s passing, they may keep them in their heart always, and thus always remember them.

15. “When At Heart You Should Be Sad” by Sir Walter Raleigh

Like many “gone, but not forgotten” poems, “When At Heart You Should Be Sad” describes how remembering a lost love and easing ourselves into stillness can almost make it feel as though they’re still with us somehow.

16. "If I Should Go Tomorrow" by Anonymous

Although no one can seem to determine with absolute certainty who originally wrote this short, moving poem, it’s managed to achieve nearly universal appeal by sharing the idea that remembering a lost love allows them to continue loving us from the heavens. This, in turn, helps us heal.

Few parents can imagine an experience worse than that of losing a child. These poems emphasize the fact that remembering a child and keeping their spirit alive does make it possible to overcome such a tragedy.

17. "Songs of the Death of Children" by Friedrich Rückert

A child who passes at too young an age wouldn’t want their parents to wallow in grief forever. On the contrary, this poem shares the perspective of a lost child who wants their parents to remember them by drowning out the darkness of pain with the light of hope.

18. “No Night Without You” by Helen Steiner Rice

The immense grief a parent feels after losing a child may not go away easily, but this poem reminds us that even the longest nights lead to dawns. A parent can still remember a child and hope they’ll meet again.

19. “A Child of Mine” by Anonymous

This poem may offer comfort to a religious parent mourning a child. It describes how happy memories of a lost child remain a blessing, and faith is key to believing their passing was part of God’s plan, a plan they’ll understand one day.

20. "Turn Again to Life" by Mary Lee Hall

While a child’s loss will naturally cause overwhelming pain, this poem encourages someone who has lost a loved one far too soon to remember them and honor them by devoting their lives to helping and supporting others.

A journey I’ve never forgotten

User Avatar

A journey that I’ve never forgot is the school trip that I went to Italy. I went to Italy 2 years ago with my classmates and it was an amazing experience. First we went to the capital city of Italy, in Rome. Rome is a very romantic city. There, we all ate pizza and then we went to the hotel. The hotel was very big and nice. I was in the room with 2 others nice girls. It was quite late so we went to a fantastic restaurant, where we chose to eat pizza and spaghetti. I ate spaghetti with a red sauce! The food was perfect and I had a very pleasant time. Then we went to the hotel and we all fell asleep. The next day we went to the chocolate factory. I had several sweets and they were all tasty! We went to several places in Italy. We went to Gobbio and we bought a lot of Italian suvenirs and we went to Assizi too. I had a great time and I hope to go on a trip again soon!

Mckenna Grace

Mckenna Grace , the in-demand actor who appeared in “I, Tonya” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” and recently starred in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” is set to lead the upcoming film “ Everything I Never Did .”

The young adult-targeted picture is written by screenwriters D.J. McPherson and Scott Taylor and will be directed by Australia’s Jeremy Sims (“Last Cab to Darwin”).

The film will be produced by Spencer McLaren (“La Brea,” “Dive Club”) of Aspect Entertainment, alongside McPherson and Jack Christian under their newly-launched production banner Filmology Features.

Popular on Variety

Added McPherson, “We are thrilled to finally announce ‘Everything I Never Did.’ It’s a project that is very close to our hearts, and we’re ecstatic to have Mckenna Grace leading our cast. Her profound ability to connect with complex roles will breathe life into this poignant narrative. We are thrilled to see her bring Jenna to life on the big screen.”

Further casting details are yet to be announced. Similarly, distribution and international sales roles have not yet been disclosed.

Though Grace has a busy dance card, production of “Everything I Never Did” is expected to begin later in 2024. The Luminate database shows her in pre-production on Mandalay Pictures’ “Straight Lines” as cast and executive producer, with two other titles in post-production: Lionsgate’s “Anniversary” and Hungry Bull Productions’ “Spider & Jessie,” on which she is again cast and executive producer.

Grace is also set as a producer and cast member on the in-development project “Rabbit Cake” for Amazon MGM Studios, and is cast in Searchlight Pictures’ “Perfect” and Alloy Entertainment’s “99 Days,” both of which are listed as in development. She is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360 and attorney Stewart Brookman.
