Worsham most recently released his 2021 EP  Sugarcane . Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer  Jay Joyce  (Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town), it’s an emotional homecoming for Worsham. What began as personal reflections from a daily writing exercise, grew into something much more universal — six songs that celebrate the love, perseverance, struggle and joy experienced through life and the people who are there through it all.

Sugarcane  features single “ Fist Though This Town ”, which  Billboard  declared “compelling from the first note”, while  Music Row  praised “Super powerful…the hard-times lyric and its blue-collar attitude grab you by your coat lapels and command you to pay heed. Brilliance all around.”

At the end of 2022, Apple Music Country launched  Pickers Radio , hosted by Worsham. The 12-episode feature has most recently seen him chatting to Vince Gill and Dierks Bentley, who Worsham will be joining on his Gravel & Gold tour across the US in his band this summer.

Charlie Worsham Talks Finally Performing In The UK & His Love of Playing

unspecified-22

Originally, Mississippi native and criminally underrated country artist Charlie Worsham was meant to make his UK debut last November, on the Mississippi to Manchester Tour. However, just a few short weeks before the selection of shows was due to take place, the tour was abruptly cancelled, with Charlie initially citing clashes with recording plans for his hotly-anticipated sophomore album. “Several things were happening at once,” he told us during an interview conducted at the recent C2C Festival in London. “I changed management, and I couldn’t really talk about that [at the time] but now that’s done, everything is cool.” What’s more, he says, work on his new record unexpectedly demanded immediate attention. “We found out that if I stayed in Nashville a few more weeks and worked really hard in the studio, we could get a jump on the progress of the record.” It was a difficult decision, but ultimately one that had to be made. “It broke my heart. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever missed a show before. . . much less a tour.”

Following the unfortunate announcement, Charlie did his best to make it up to fans. In addition to a public apology, he wrote to those who had purchased tickets personally, apologising again and including little gifts. It was a move that cemented the fandom of many, and served to gain yet more fans as the news spread across social media. “Well I knew, even though I’ve yet to perform – the legend of how great English, British country music fans are has already spread and so I knew everyone was loyal and did not want to let them down,” Charlie explained of his decision to give back to the fans he had let down. “I remember growing up being a country fan myself, just meeting someone [that you love], what that does to you – you never forget it. . . I just want to do the right thing by the fans, you know.”

However, as it turns out fans didn’t have to wait long to see their favourite in person. It was soon announced that Charlie would be heading over to play C2C Festival on the pop-up stages, just four months after the cancelled tour. As many are aware, he ended up playing in the opening slot on Frankie Ballard’s headlining European tour the following week, performing in various cities around the UK and Germany. Still, this wasn’t always the case. “Originally, this trip was just going to be for C2C,” Charlie noted. “I was at my label, at Warner Brothers, talking to a friend who works with myself and with Frankie [also on the label]. We were talking about, ‘Man, I just wish I could play more shows in England,’ and she goes, ‘Well, you know Frankie Ballard is coming over there for his first time?’ So I said, ‘You tell Frankie that I’m a cheap opener.’ Frankie was so sweet and so cool, he was very receptive to the idea and let us tag along; he lets me play an extra seven, eight shows that I work around.”

unspecified-21

It turned out to be a solid decision. Charlie was featured on the line-up for C2C’s unofficial kick-off event, the CMA Songwriters Series, alongside the likes of Ashley Monroe, Lori McKenna, Shane McAnally, and Charles Esten (Deacon on Nashville). The fan reaction to his songs was so intense that one of the songs he played, a totally unreleased track titled ‘Lawn Chair’, actually resulted in mass sing-a-longs during the tour with Frankie Ballard, just a few days later. When we interviewed him it was prior to the Songwriters show, but Charlie was still prepared for the love and respect of British fans. “I’ve been told [about the UK] that sometimes it’s weird at first, because the audience can be very, very quiet while you’re singing the song,” he explained. “Which you have no idea how much that means to me, having experienced the opposite. That’s not going to weird me out at all. Then I hear that the minute the song’s over there is just a roaring applause.” True to form, this was indeed the case at every stage he played throughout the week.

Amazingly, however, Charlie was not always a singer or a songwriter. The son of a banker and a teacher, he initially found a love of music through playing guitar and banjo. He smiles when he notes that he was terrible at sports, thereby solidifying the kind of direction he would go in at school. “I always was a player, and that’s what I was always drawn to first,” he says. “I kind of started writing songs and singing out of necessity. Being in a band that had to play four hours, we needed material and we needed somebody to give the other singers a break.” He admits that since those early days he has fallen in love with both singing and songwriting, but playing is at his core. “I’ve been fortunate to make a living playing music, even before I went for the solo career. And that’s thanks to my friends in the music community; they had me play on their demos, and later on their records or on the road with them, and it’s just such a universal language.” It’s fitting that one of his biggest inspirations is Vince Gill, who equally initially came to recording music through playing, rather than singing or writing.

unspecified-20

Charlie’s music is a mix of country, singer-songwriter pop and good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, and the music that he listens to on his own time reflects that. “I grew up on the Beatles and the Stones,” he muses. “My first concert was the Rolling Stones in Memphis, and when they broke into the first verse of ‘Honky Tonk Woman’ and said “Memphis Beach”, [we all] freaked out.” In addition, he cites Ed Sheeran as a new discovery, exclaiming “His writing is so good,” and also highlights a buzzy new name coming up through the ranks. “I don’t know if she has made waves over here yet or not, but Aubrie Sellers just put out one hell of a record.” Aubrie is Lee Ann Womack’s daughter, and her debut album evokes a sound that has been described as “garage country”.

It’s safe to say that Charlie Worsham charmed everyone when he arrived on UK shores. Smart, respectful and refreshingly humble, he stunned audiences with his excellent picking skills and heartfelt songs. So it’s perfectly fitting of his time in Europe and the impression he made, that he finished our interview by quipping, “Well, in the famous words of Minnie Pearl, I’m just so proud to be here, I really am, thank you.”

unspecified-19

It has been recently been announced that Charlie Worsham will be opening for Kenny Rogers on the European leg of his farewell tour, this coming November.

Charlie Worsham Learns To Pray At C2C

It’s the opening night of C2C , the weekend where country music takes over the O2 in London. The CMA Songwriters Series is the traditional kick off for the festival, with some of the crowd heading to the show straight from the airports, their stetsons tied to their suitcases. The premise of the evening is simple: four amazing solo artists take turns sharing a story and a song across two hours to celebrate the best of country music. This year’s host is CMA nominated singer songwriter Charlie Worsham , who’s very pleased to return to these shores.

Charlie Worsham - CMA Songwriters Session @ C2C: Country to Country Festival 2024

Charlie Worsham - CMA Songwriters Session @ C2C: Country to Country Festival 2024 (Luke Dyson/CMA)

“This was my first gig in the UK,” Worsham reveals. “I’m very honoured to say I’m the first songwriter who’s been invited back. I grew up travelling, and came to London as a thirteen year old kid, and loved it since then. But my first time to play here was at C2C in 2016 or 2017 at the Songwriters’ Series . I remember playing brand new songs I’ve never played then having a show the next day at the Plaza, and people were singing along with every word. I was thinking, “Man! These are my people!” It’s been true ever since. I come every chance I get to tour in the UK.” It’s definitely the way that we in the UK respond to Worsham’s music that really connects with the singer. “I don’t mean this as a knock to anyone,” he apologises in advance, unnecessarily, “but the thing about audiences in the UK that I love…even when you’re playing in a bar, with people standing up, you can hear a pin drop. Not that they won’t get rowdy if you want them to, and they will, but they listen intently. At the end of the night, when I’m signing CDs and stuff, the questions I get are very different. I get questions like, “I noticed you worked with this other producer, and they put you with this different rhythm section, why is that?” I love that! I’m a nerd, a music nerd.”

Charlie Worsham might be most recognisable from his biggest hit, How I Learned To Pray , which has amassed a staggering eleven million streams on Spotify. He smiles bashfully when this achievement is mentioned. “The original version has about half that many, and it’s been out for ten years now on my debut record, Rubberband . It was one of the first songs I first played when I came to England, to C2C . I guess one of the reasons that song has taken off is part of this new project, Compadres , where I’m singing duets, and having Luke Combs on it doesn’t hurt for sure!” He laughs. “What I love about having the chance to reimagine that song is, ten years ago, when I first put that record out and that song was part of that record, I didn’t know Luke at that time, but he’d just moved to town. It turns out that record was inspiring to him! That song in particular, we joke about How I Learned to Pray has changed so much for us over the last ten years, because we’ve both become new dads. You’re just kinda praying that you get enough sleep that night, or that they don’t do something to greatly injure themselves. I love having Luke on that song, it really makes it come full circle.”

Compadres , as Worsham mentions, is his latest EP which was released in autumn 2023 made up of duets with his friends. “That really came from my work as a session musician,” he elaborates. The 38-year-old is a born storyteller, his points meandering across time, but always compelling. “I had this moment one day, driving to the studio…I love playing music, and my favourite way to do that, for me, is to write songs on my own, make my own records, play my own shows, and get to be the one to play all the guitar solos and whatever! But my other favourite way to do it is just to be a part of playing music and making music. In Nashville we’re so fortunate that we are the ‘world’s capital’, in a sense, for session work, for going into a recording studio at 10am and by 1pm you’ve recorded one to three songs with a full band: drums, bass, guitars, steel guitar, fiddles, everything. For many many years, especially in my early years when I was just getting to town and struggling, that’s how I was paying bills, by playing on records. I worked my way up from demos of not-so-great- songs to mostly playing on big records. I remember one day, towards the end of the pandemic times, just driving to the studio and thinking to myself, ‘the only way this day could be better is if I was making my own record’. I thought, well, I’ve been a part of all these folks’ stories, why not invite them to be a part of mine? I reached out to Lainey [Wilson] , reached out to Luke [Combs] , and Elle King , and Dierks [Bentley] …these days I play in Dierks’ band, in the summer months. Everybody said yes, the songs naturally found their way to the right person, and it’s a mixture off old songs, new songs, and there’s even a cover of my favourite Patty Loveless song on there. That was really the inspiration: this is who I am, how can I tell this story in a way that the fans will enjoy?”

At IndigO2 that night, Worsham performs Creek Water Clear, originally his duet with Elle King , solo. Under the echoing blue spotlight of the theatre stage, the song appears from the dim backdrop of his guitar like a spectre, all wistful and faded, outlined by the simplicity of memory, as soft and meandering as the streams he evokes. Years Go By feels more tense when it’s played live with delicate tweaks on the high notes, weaving present and past in late summer nostalgia. Stephen Wilson Jr , seated on the opposite side of the line of artists, silently joins him on guitar, his deeper notes building a piling, falling clap from the crowd. Another fan favourite, Kiss Like You Dance , is an optimistic play on classic country whirling chords, glowing with hopeful devotion, and Lawn Chair Don’t Care has a peppy quality that slips into mellow appreciation of life’s small pleasures. His brief shared set is a joy, summarising one of the most interesting newer voices in Country.

Charlie Worsham - CMA Songwriters Session @ C2C: Country to Country Festival 2024 (Luke Dyson/CMA)

Perhaps the most familiar face Worsham has shared a stage with was Taylor Swift on her 2011 tour, and it was a big turning point for the Jackson, Mississippi-hailing musician. “Taylor was the first person to take me out on tour, and it’s emotional to talk about! It’s not just the tour, which was amazing, but it’s a big reason why I got my record deal. She looked back over her early years, and she pinpointed people who had given her a leg up, and she made a point on the Speak Now tour that every night, somebody that needed a leg up got it. The first opening slot she divvied up among how many of us there were. I got ten shows, starting with Nashville and ending with Dallas Cowboys stadium. I got to play two stadiums on that tour: it’s funny, my first time playing a stadium gig was at Arrowhead Stadium, which is where her boyfriend plays football now. Who knew? My publisher has been the first to sign her to a publishing deal, that was her connection there. I was the only one on that tour who didn’t yet have a record deal and it made record labels take notice. Being on tour with her was great, it was a first class education in how to be as a person, as an entertainer, as a professional. Her whole team was great, they let me ride on all the buses so I’ll forever be thankful to Taylor . ”

While touring with Swift might have been a huge boost to Worsham’s career, he was already on the way to a life in music long before they crossed paths which started when he was very young. “The original ‘this is what I want to be when I grow up’ moment was actually my dad. My dad, who has made his career is a banker and is semi-retired now…I’ve always known him as ‘my dad the drummer’. And we’ve always had a drum kit set up in the house. But my earliest memories of music were sitting on his lap as a toddler and banging on the drums. He’d let me tag along to local gigs he played. Before my bedtime I’d get to see the lights go down and the stage lights go up and watch him play. He would let me bang on the drums through the speakers at soundcheck and I thought ‘whoah, you can be this loud and powerful!’. But the moment that got me, this band of his, the guitar player picked up his guitar and played the solo with his teeth, and the grownups went crazy! And I thought ‘grownups on stage are acting like kids, and I’m a kid, and I don’t ever want to not be a kid, and they seem to have this power over other grownups to make them act silly, this power must be mine one day!’” He widens his eyes and laughs at the memory of being so impressed as a kid. “I struck out at T-Ball, so I was never gonna be a sports guy. I was oddly enough good in school, having a mom who was a really good teacher and in the same school district didn’t hurt my chances there. It was all just to get to the music. I would go for runs, when I was in high school, and just practice my acceptance speeches in my head. It’s always been the thing that made sense to me, and I’m grateful to say it’s the only job I’ve ever had since high school. Before then I was playing in bluegrass bands, in middle school and grade school, and selling records out of the trunk.”

Charlie Worsham - CMA Songwriters Session @ C2C: Country to Country Festival 2024 (Luke Dyson/CMA)

The power of country music runs deep as Worsham explains. “I think country music is particularly good at reaching in and finding the blue collar in all of us. It’s my favourite way to play any and all forms of American folk music in one, because you can’t have country music without the blues. Growing up in Mississippi – and I call it the ‘Spinal Column of American Music’ because from New Orleans to Memphis , you get everything you need, all the great American music that Black Americans gave us to work with. Country music is this tightrope that people walk back between Saturday night and Sunday morning, that’s the human condition. Rock n Roll is part of country music and there’s so much crossover. For the last few years I was in the room for the medallion ceremony (it’s like Easter Sunday in the Vatican for country music, it’s when we induct people in to the hall of fame), and I’ve experienced that night in every way you can: in the audience, performing as the singer onstage, helping induct people, then I came back and played in the medallion all star band which inducts people. What I’m getting at here is that Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles , they’re in the Country Music Hall Of Fame , as they should be, because country is a little bit rock and a little bit bluegrass. Country is the best way to express your heart, it’s the simplest way to get to do that, and it’s the best way to indulge all your creative curiosities.” It’s this philosophy which explains the enduring success of C2C as the UK’s biggest country music event, and what makes Charlie Worsham’s music such a shining star in the galaxy of fantastic entertainment which the weekend offers. By the end of the weekend he’s bound to have won many new fans with his heartfelt and open music, even if they ask him detailed ‘music nerd’ questions as soon as he finishes his set.

Worsham most recently released his 2021 EP  Sugarcane .

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Charlie Worsham ’s anticipated new EP, Sugarcane , is out today via Warner Music Nashville . Stream/purchase HERE .

Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town),  Sugarcane  is an emotional homecoming for Worsham. What began as personal reflections from a daily writing exercise, grew into something much more universal—six new songs that celebrate the love, perseverance, struggle and joy experienced through life and the people who are there through it all.

Recent critical acclaim for Sugarcane …

“compelling from the first note”— Billboard

“ Sugarcane  brilliantly showcases Worsham’s inventiveness as a songwriter, his radiant genius as a guitarist, and his evocative skills as a vocalist”— No Depression

“With each song, the artist introduces another face of both his artistry and personal life. With poignant intentionality, he ruminates on what is gained from times of struggle and all the many ways to perceive the idea of success in one’s life.”— American Songwriter

“Super powerful…Brilliance all around.”— MusicRow

“ The most talented musician in the genre… as well as being a gifted vocalist and songwriter, Worsham is also a jaw-dropping musician and he’s widely respected for his incredible talents.”— Entertainment Focus

“ a beloved triple threat in Music City and beyond”— Sounds Like Nashville

“ one of the most talented people in all of Nashville”— Whiskey Riff

“ one of the finest in the business … a simple and elegant collection of songs that absolutely showcases the quality within.”— Rock N’ Load Magazine

In celebration of the new music, Worsham will perform a special EP release show at Ole Red Nashville next Thursday, July 22 at 8:30 pm CT, which will also be simultaneously livestreamed across Worsham, Ole Red and WSM Radio’s respective YouTube and Facebook pages.

Sugarcane follows Worsham’s 2017 album, Beginning of Things , and furthers his reputation as an artist with “undeniable musical talent” (NPR Music). Released to overwhelming critical acclaim, Beginning of Things landed on several “Best of 2017” lists including Rolling Stone , Variety , PopMatters, Nashville Scene and Vulture, who praised, “a multifaceted talent—a warm, thinking singer, hook writer, and picker—and one of the most well-regarded underdogs in Nashville.” Moreover, The Wall Street Journal proclaimed, “arguably the most blatantly talented multi-threat younger man in country music…a fiery guitar picker; a rangy, affecting song interpreter as a vocalist; and a witty yet compassionate collaborating songwriter” and American Songwriter declared, “one of country’s most formidable dark horses, a quiet contender worthy of the attention and airplay claimed by his less cerebral contemporaries.”

Since the release of his 2013 debut, Rubberband , Worsham has established himself as one of Nashville’s most beloved and well-respected artists. In addition to his own music, he’s a frequent collaborator including work with Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Brandy Clark, Luke Combs, Vince Gill, Kacey Musgraves, Marty Stuart, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban among several others. He also earned a nomination for Specialty Instrument Player of the Year at the 55th ACM Awards and has toured extensively across the world including numerous shows performing as of part of Old Crow Medicine Show as well as dates with Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Kenny Rogers, Lee Ann Womack, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Interview: Charlie Worsham on his UK tour, Nashville residency and new music

Laura Cooney

Charlie Worsham has become one of the most popular live country acts in the UK, with loyal and passionate fans regularly turning him out to see him perform here.

That loyalty has been rewarded with Worsham visiting at least once a year, most recently when he supported Lucie Silvas on her UK tour last November. Now, after his second album Beginning Of Things featured on year-end best-of lists from Rolling Stone Country, CMT and Variety, he’s back over here next month to play a string of solo shows, support the legendary Lee Ann Womack and perform at The Long Road Festival.

I recently caught up with Charlie to talk about the tour, his Every Damn Monday residency in Nashville, the song he wished he’d written and his plans for new music.

Hi Charlie! The last time we spoke to you was almost a year ago – what have you been up to since then?

Oh my goodness! Well, I’ve been up to a lot of things. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get back to y’all sooner than now, but better late than never. But other than that – I’m getting married, I’ve been writing a lot of songs this year, a little bit of touring in the States. But really focusing on writing, I’m focusing on the residency I do in Nashville every summer and the work we do with Follow Your Heart. But I guess the big one is getting hitched. I mean it’s hard to top that.

You’re coming over to tour the UK next week. What can we expect from those shows?

Y’know, it’s become tradition now – I think I try out everything first in the UK, and this trip will be no exception. I remember bringing bootleg copies of my last record with me on one tour and giving everybody Beginning Of Things before it was out in the world. And before that I remember trying the songs that became that record on my first trip to the UK at the CMA Songwriter Round – Lawn Chair Don’t Care I sang for the first time at The O2 in London. So I’ll be doing that again. I’ve probably written about 70 songs since I’ve started working on what will be the next record. I love the fans in the UK so much I wanna test everything out and see what they think first [laughs].

Is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to visiting on this tour?

I’m always really excited to discover a new place, so seeing Leeds and Newcastle on the itinerary has me very excited. But all the other folks, all the other places I’m going to see, I mean… gosh I’ve got friends I look forward to catching up with in London, and I have a day off in Glasgow this time so I’m excited to explore that city more than I’ve had a chance to in the past. Really I can’t pick any one place, I just love the whole country [laughs].

Will UK audiences get to hear some of the new music as well?

Oh, absolutely. I mean I’ll play whatever folks wanna hear in the shows for sure, but my goal is to give y’all a heavy dose of the new material and see what y’all think. So as long as everybody’s cool with that. Or maybe there’s some songs that have been posted on YouTube. And so if there’s one that anybody wants to hear in particular I encourage everyone to Instagram me and tweet at me and all of that. I’ll be posting soon about the tour and asking for requests.

Are there any new songs you’re particularly looking forward to playing live?

There’s a song I wrote for my mom, and we’re actually gonna dance at the wedding to it. It’s called The Other Side Of The Lens. I’m really proud of that one. It’s really personal but I think it’s relatable. It’s just about how she’s always made sure to capture our family memories as they were happening, and I think there’s someone in every family that does that, and for me it’s my mom. So I’m excited about that one. There are others that I’m excited about but I’m not sure yet how everyone’s gonna like ’em. Obviously I’m exploring all my feelings – falling in love, frustration with business, all of it. It’s all coming out.

You posted on Instagram recently that it was five years since your debut album Rubberband came out. Do you feel your music has evolved a lot since then?

Yeah. I think my music has evolved, and I think that’s important. All my favourite artists that I look up to, they don’t make the same record twice. And that’s something that I strive to do. I do think that certain things about Rubberband still hold true today as far as my music and my style. Certain things are never gonna change, y’know? I mean there’s certain ways I sing and stuff that are kind of built in. But yeah, the way that I play and the way that I think, just in terms of… y’know, I’ve spent countless hours on stage and countless hours in the writing room since Rubberband, and I’ve learned a lot. So hopefully I can always say that whatever record I made five years prior that I’ve learned a lot since then.

You’re playing The Long Road Festival as part of this tour. Do you find festival crowds are different from other shows?

Well I’ve yet to play a festival in the UK. I definitely think that a festival crowd, it’s a different atmosphere for sure. For one, if you’re playing a show with your name and maybe one other name on the ticket, there’s no doubt everybody came there that show, that night to see you. And of course at a festival you’ve got folks who are there to see you but they’re there to see a lot of their favourites. And the bonus of that is that people are really excited. If they’re there to see one show, you’re getting unplugged from reality for maybe a couple of hours. But at a festival I know a lot of people are gonna camp out, and so it’s kind of a high-energy type thing and I love that. I’m fortunate as well that when I was on tour with Lucie Silvas last year she introduced me to some incredible musicians that live in the UK, and I’ll have a band which will be really fun thanks to the folks she introduced me to. So I’m excited to experience that energy of a festival with a band behind me.

You’ve mentioned your Every Damn Monday residency in Nashville – have you got any favourite memories from that?

Ohhoho! Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I saw the video of that, it was incredible…

Oh, thank you. Man, the cool thing about that residency – y’know of course we’re raising money for music education, which I think is so important, and it’s in my home town too, the programme that we support which is really dear to me. But what we get out of it – what myself and the musicians and the guests get out of it – is I pick the themes based on stuff that if we said to our 12-year-old self, ‘hey, you’re gonna get to do this in front of a big crowd’ that we’d geek out over. And Lynyrd Skynyrd is a part of my DNA, how I learned to play guitar, what I wanted to look like when I saw the video footage of them performing. And the same is true of everybody that was in that band. Y’know, John Osborne and Sadler Vaden, they had the same growing up as far as Lynyrd Skynyrd goes. So to get to really honour those songs and to learn them correctly, I think Lynyrd Skynyrd especially is one of those bands that get poorly covered a lot, y’know? [laughs] So to cover them and do them justice meant a lot. And to do that with my friends, that’s really the benefit of those things for us that we sort of get to be 10, 11, 12 years old again, y’know?

Is the residency something you’d ever consider doing in the UK?

Big time. I’d actually hoped to do an Every Damn Monday residency in the UK this year and stay longer and do some writing, and that’s still a hope that I have for the future. And even if I’m unable to do it that same that I do in the States where it takes a month, it would be really fun to do. There’s something cool about a residency and UK fans are tailor-made for residencies because they’re so dedicated. You build up this camaraderie – I mean I think this year I saw people in the fifth week that had been there every week, and they’re collecting posters. There’s this sort of sense of excitement. You don’t know who’s gonna get surprise announced and I would love nothing more than to bring that to the UK.

You’ve mentioned Follow Your Heart a couple of times. The Foundation has raised almost $50,000 in its first year – what does the future look like?

Well I think the long-term goal for Follow Your Heart… My home town has about 20,000 people in the county, and the way that I grew up it was sort of luck of the draw that I, number one was born into a family that could afford instruments and lessons and the time that it took to drive me to lessons because nobody in town had lessons. And number two, that they were willing. A lot of families, they may be able to afford it but they may not have the time, the way their job works. If their kid doesn’t play football forget it, because you can’t do it at school. And so I just believe music education made me who I am and saved my life in so many ways, and I would love to see what happens to a small town in Mississippi 10 years down the road if every single kid who expresses interest in music gets the opportunity to explore that.

So I think what it looks like is we continue to raise funds, we continue to provide a scholarship for students who are headed off into the world if they wanna study music or any kind of arts endeavour that we can support them fully. But that any kid at any age can get a guitar and learn, and hopefully have a permanent home. That’s the real crown jewel, if you will, that we’re hoping to acquire at some point a brick and mortar space that’s dedicated to Follow Your Heart. Y’know, there’s a guitar classroom and a keyboard classroom and a drums classroom. Maybe in the basement they’re learning how to dance and in the attic they’re learning how to cook or something, who knows? But just to see what happens to a community if the arts are made available.

What’s the one song you wish you’d written?

Ohho! Oh man! Oh… You know what’s interesting, I’ve been going back and listening to The Beatles a lot lately, and I don’t want anyone to read this and roll their eyes but the thing about it is that was really important music to me, and it holds up over 50 years later. So I’d probably pick something from the Beatles’ catalogue, or Dolly Parton. And if it was Dolly Parton I’d do I Will Always Love You. If it were the Beatles… I think that we need something along the lines of All You Need Is Love right now, especially here in the States, y’know? That’s such a message for our time. But that’s such a hard question to answer because I think the answer can change by the season, y’know? But right now I’d pull from the Lennon and McCartney catalogue.

What do the next few months look like for you?

Yeah, we’ll get hitched and I’ll come back to play some European dates in October, and dedicate myself to writing through the year. And the goal is to have the songs I need by the end of the year to go into 2019 ready to start chipping away at a record. That’s the ideal situation and I think of course it’s not entirely in my control. I can’t just pick when that magic song is gonna float down from the sky and land in my hands. But I think as soon as I get that song, and I’m confident I can get it by the end of the year, I can put that magic song, the lead song, the first single with everything else I’ve been writing and start to put it on the tape.
