Kota Bharu Halal Travel Guide

Kota Bharu is the vibrant capital of the state of Kelantan, whose unique culture and dialect are proudly promoted and sustained in all aspects that do not conflict with orthodox Islam. Visitors can experience local culture in the form of the Thai and Indian-influenced cuisine, dress (the state is probably the most famous for batik in Malaysia), handicrafts, some traditional architecture, museums showing the state's cultural legacy, and the sound of the Kelantanese dialect. Speakers of standard Malay may not be able to understand the local dialect, although if you speak standard Malay, local residents will understand you and reply in standard Malay. You can hear Bahasa Kelantan not only in the markets and on the streets but also on local radio stations.

Kota Bharu is a very socially conservative city in a state ruled by the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS). Visitors will hear the azan (call for prayer) from many masjids 5 times a day, and the khutbah (sermon) may also be broadcast from some masjids with loudspeakers. Visitors should be prepared for breaks to be taken in many places including the Pasar Malam (Night Market) during Islamic prayer times.

Travel as a Muslim to Kota Bharu

Buy a flight ticket to and from kota bharu.

Kota Bahru (Sultan Ismail Petra) Airport MRD - Sultan Ismail Petra Airport

Kota Bharu's small but efficient Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) in Pengkalan Chepa receives Flights from Kuala Lumpur provided by Malaysia Airlines and budget carrier AirAsia . Advance bookings especially for AirAsia can be very affordable (with best promotional fares you can end up flying cheaper than going by bus, if you have no check-in luggage).

Firefly , offers seven direct connecting flights between Kota Bharu and Kuala Lumpur via Subang Airport and daily flight to Penang . It's also the first airline to connect Kota Bharu to the southern city of Johor Bahru. Prior to this, most people would make the trip by vehicle or a 10-hour bus journey.

Firefly flies from Kota Bharu directly into Singapore .

Getting to/away: The airport is 20 minutes from the downtown by taxi (fare was RM40 in January 2012). You can also catch a City-Liner bus No. 9 from the local bus station in the downtown (RM1.80, hourly, from 07:00 to 19:00, duration around 20 minutes).

Muslim Friendly Rail Holidays in Kota Bharu

The nearest train station to Kota Bharu is at Wakaf Bharu , some 6.5 kilometers away from the downtown. You can catch public bus No 19, 27 or 43 (Fare RM 1.50, operates from 07:00 to 19:00) from Kota Bharu Central Bus Terminal to get there or just ask your hotel/guesthouse to arrange a taxi for you (RM35 in February 2011). The official taxis at the station have a rate sheet.

Trains run on the Jungle Railway to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore . One attraction is the Jungle Train with its shuttle train service that does stop at almost every station between Tumpat and Gemas, allowing you to enjoy close-up contact with local people as the train travels through the heart of Peninsular Malaysia . The name "Jungle Train" is really an obsolete name, nowadays: there is little if any jungle along the route. This is because the jungle has been replaced by palm trees - thousands of them. There are four day trains (Three shuttle trains and one express train) and two overnight trains (both express trains) making stops at Wakaf Bharu Station on their way southbound. For northbound direction, all the services terminate at Tumpat station, just a station beyond Wakaf Bharu. However, it is advisable to check the "KTM" (Malaysian Railways) timetable for any changes on this schedule.

From Wakaf Bharu station : Two shuttle trains No 81 and 85 depart from Wakaf Bharu Station at 04:00 and 14:17 respectively take you on board down south to their terminus at Kuala Lipis while another Shuttle train No 83 departs at 08.04 only terminate at Gua Musang. The Express train No 15 (Sinaran Timur) however, will take you further south to Johor Bahru and Singapore via Gua Musang, Kuala Lipis, Jerantut and Gemas. This train departs from Wakaf Bharu Station at 07.16 and reaches Woodlands CIQ Station in Singapore at 21:20. If you want to go to Taman Negara, you may board this train and get off at Jerantut.

To Wakaf Bharu station : The same train services with different train number may also get you into Kota Bharu through Wakaf Bharu station. Shuttle train No 82 and 86 that departs from Kuala Lipis, arrives at Wakaf Bharu station at 12.33 and 20:43 respectively. Another Shuttle train No 84 that departs from Gua Musang, arrives at Wakaf Bharu Station at 17:14. The Express train No 14 (Sinaran Timur) departs from Woodlands CIQ station in Singapore at 05.30, also arrives at Wakaf Bharu station at 18:52.

Overnight train

From Wakaf Bharu station : One Express train No 29 (Senandung Wau) will take you to the capital city of Malaysia , Kuala Lumpur . This train departs from Wakaf Bharu Station at 19:02 and reaches Kuala Lumpur Sentral Station at 07:55 the next day. Another Express train No 27 (Senandung Timuran) will take you down south to Johor Bahru and Singapore . This train departs from Wakaf Bharu Station at 20:47 and reaches Woodlands CIQ Station at 10:15 the next day.

To Wakaf Bharu station : The same train services with different train number may also get you into Kota Bharu through Wakaf Bharu station. The Express train No 28 (Senandung Wau) that departs from Kuala Lumpur Sentral station at 20:30, arrives at Wakaf Bharu station at 09.21 the next day. Another Express train No 26 (Senandung Timuran) that departs from Woodlands CIQ station in Singapore at 19:00, arrives at Wakaf Bharu station at 08.44 on the next day.

Other trains

  • Malayan Tiger: This service of "KTM" (Malaysian Railways) uses special coaches donated by the Japanese Government. In July 2012, this train operated thrice weekly between Tumpat and Johor Bahru. This train departs from Wakaf Bharu Station at 17:18 every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday and reaches Johor Bahru Sentral station at 07:20 the next day. On the opposite direction, this train departs from Johor Bahru Sentral station at 22:39 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and arrives at Wakaf Bharu station at 13:11 the next day.
  • To Thailand: There are no train services directly into Thailand . You will have to catch bus No 29 from Kota Bharu Central Bus Terminal to Rantau Panjang and cross the border into Sungai Kolok and proceed from there. The morning train up to Bangkok departs Sungai Golok at 11:20.

Travel on a Bus in Kota Bharu

The state-run SKMK and Transnasional is the largest bus company, and operate all the city and regional buses, and most of the long-distance buses. It operates from the central bus station (city and regional buses) and the Langgar bus station (long-distance buses). All the other long-distance bus companies operate from Jalan Hamzah external bus station. On arrival in Kota Bharu some of the buses will drop you at the central bus station, but they don't depart from there. Transnasional is the easiest to deal with, as it has ticket offices at all the bus stations. Long-distance departures are from Langgar bus station but, just to make thing confusing, a few evening buses also go from central bus station. Ask which station your bus departs from when you buy your ticket, and book as far ahead as feasible, especially for the Butterworth and Georgetown (Malaysia) | Penang buses.

There are several buses to Butterworth (RM30, five or six hours) and buses to Georgetown (Malaysia) | Penang (RM34.70, six hours and 15 minutes) with one long stop (60-75 minutes) at Gerik. Buses to Penang leave in the morning at 09:00 and in the evening. There are also regular buses to Kuala Terengganu (RM16, three hours) and Kuantan (RM33, six hours). Apart from that and there are also buses to Kuala Lumpur (RM40, nine hours), Johor Bahru (RM65, 12 hours), Singapore (13-14 hours), Melaka (RM55, 10-11 hours), Seremban (RM48, 10 hours) and Ipoh (RM35, seven hours). Other destinations are Alor Setar, Jerantut, Jitra, Gerik, Temerloh, Dungun, Kemaman, Kangar and Kerteh. The other bus companies cover many of the same routes and are worth trying.

From the Thai border town of Sungai Kolok and there is a red city liner bus 29 (departs from the central bus station) for RM5, which operates the 36 kilometers stretch. Just wait along the Malaysian side of the border along the covered walkway and flag it.

What to see in Kota Bharu

Markt Kota Bahru - Pasar

Kota Bharu itself offers many museums near Independence Plaza ( Padang Merdeka ). Several of the museums and the nearby Istana Balai Besar (the downtown Royal Palace) were built in a unique kind of elegant architecture that is well worth seeing. Arguably the most amazing building is the central market ( Pasar Besar ). It is an octagonal building in the centre of town and houses a very colourful and active market every day. Nearby is a plain square which turns into the local food market in the evenings ( Pasar Malam = Night Market).

Top Muslim Travel Tips for Kota Bharu

Poly-Chlorinated Biphenyl Beach?|No, PCB Beach isn't named after a nasty industrial chemical: the original name was Pantai Cinta Berahi or the "Passionate Love Beach". Alas, this was a little too daring for State Government, and now the official name is Pantai Cahaya Bulan , "Moonlight Beach".

  • Go to the day and night markets. Have Nasi Kerabu for lunch at the day market and Ayam Percik at the night market.
  • Walk around the downtown area.
  • Bicycle around Pengkalan Chepa area (airport), see old WW2 British pillboxes near beach at Pantai Sabak. For history buffs only but no beach anymore due to erosion.
  • Go to the beach, either PCB Beach or Irama Beach (Beach of Melody). PCB Beach has batik shops, one of which is Citra Batik about 500 m from the beach. Also eat fried seafood at PCB Beach or Irama Beach with coconut water.
  • Beautiful beaches at Bachok - Pantai Perkasa, Pantai Sungai Dua, Pantai Kandis.

Muslim Friendly Shopping in Kota Bharu

Finished wau and wau frame - Wau bulan for sale

  • Hand-printed batik clothes. Kota Bharu Trade Centre (KBTC), which offers a variety of choices and is located just beside Pasar Siti Khadijah. Other places to buy hand-printed batik include Citra Batik at PCB Beach or at the KB Mall in town which has higher prices but is more convenient.
  • Silverware - at the tourist museum in Kota Bharu town.
  • Crystals and gemstones - you can find them at the local wet market or morning market or specialist shops. Emerald (local residents call them zamrud), ruby, sapphire, topaz, tiger's eye, etc. can be found. But beware as there are many fakes sold.
  • Kites - Miniature wau bulan are a local handicraft, but they are expensive and don't fly, so don't get them except for souvenirs. It is better to buy the plastic types for children because those kites can fly.

Halal Restaurants in Kota Bharu

Kota Bharu is full of delicious Kelantanese food, a unique cuisine influenced by Thai and Indian styles, among others. Lots of goodies are to be found in the pasars and in coffee shops throughout the city. Chinese food is also available at various restaurants and food courts.

Among the local specialities are:

  • Ayam Percik, chicken which is roasted over a wood fire and combined with coconut/peanut sauce and delicious local herbs and greens. Yati Ayam Percik (847, Jalan Long Yunus) has got to be the best around (take a bicycle from your hotel to arrive there, it's about 2 kilometers from the centre);
  • Nasi Ulam (locally called Nasi Kerabu), rice with fragrant, fresh-picked leaves and shoots, traditionally dipped into budu (fish sauce), sambal belacan (shrimp paste with hot pepper, et al.) or/and tempoyak (fermented durian sauce); You can find it in the morning at the Central Market first floor foodcourt.
  • Nasi Dagang Kelantan. The slightly glutinous-textured rice is cooked in coconut, and similar to Nasi Dagang Terengganu, except the Kelantanese rice grains have a tint of maroon. Served with either a fish or chicken gravy, it is a local favourite breakfast food.
  • Murtabak, savory or sweet crêpes. Murtabak Raja (Royal Murtabak) is the famous one on Jalan Bayam. They sell takeaway Murtabak and sweets and the staff is really nice and friendly.
  • If you visit around Hari Raya time, don't miss the chance to try Tapai, which is sweet fermented cassava or rice, wrapped in tapioca leaves. If you like tea, wash everything down with Teh O (tea with sugar) or Teh Susu (tea with sweetened condensed milk).
  • Keropok Lekor Losong (the local version is Keropok Gote), originally from Losong village and considered by Kelantanese to be the benchmark of all fish paste sausages. Comes fried or boiled. Kelantan Keropok Gote is not like Terengganu Kerepok Lekor Losong ; it is thicker at about 4 cm.
  • Durian puffs (locally called Lepok Durian or Gelembung Buaya and they are in 3 colours: red, yellow and green), at Kubang Pasu wet market in the mornings - for durian lovers with strong stomachs only. These delicious pastries are sold at the wet market surrounded by fish. Buy from the lady at the junction, not in the middle of wet market.
  • Morning Satay, same lady, but not so delicious. Just for the experience. It also can be found in various restaurants in town. There are a few famous satay sellers like Satay Baung, Satay Suria, etc.

For Thai food, try restaurants in Taman Cemerlang and in nearby Wakaf Bharu town.

Travel Guide Kota Bharu Itinerary - Things to do in Kota Bharu

* This article was originally published on Ummi Goes Where? in 2022.

Kota Bharu, or commonly referred to as KB, is a town in the northeastern part of Peninsular Malaysia, 440 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, close to the border of Thailand. Steeped in culture, the town is home to many museums, religious buildings, royal palaces and craft centers. It is also the gateway to the famed Perhentian Islands as it is only an hour’s drive away from the jetty.

Overview of Kota Bharu, Kelantan

have halal will travel kota bharu

Although known as one of the most conservative regions in the country, that does not make it any less interesting. Kota Bharu is still a popular tourist spot with some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet and so much to offer!

Kota Bharu was established as Kelantan’s state capital in the late 19th century by Sultan Muhammad II. During the second world war, Pantai Sabak (about 10 kilometers away from Kota Bharu), was the initial landing point of the Japanese forces, who then successfully captured the town and later the country.

In 2005, the town was rebranded as the “Islamic City” by the state government. Almost 93% of Kota Bharu’s population is Muslim, with the remainder comprising Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians. The Kelantanese culture is highly distinctive with some influences from Thailand due to its geographical proximity.

Best Time to Visit Kota Bharu, Kelantan

tambatan diraja kelantan

Kelantan is affected by the monsoon season between November and February, where some places may get severely flooded, people evacuated from their homes, islands closed to visitors, and ferry services suspended.

We visited in late February / early March and still, our train got cancelled because some parts of the railway were flooded.

The best time to go is from March to October, when the weather is warmer with less chances of rain.

However, try to avoid school holidays especially Eid. Many Kelantanese migrate to other states for work and will come home during the holidays. Bus, train and flight tickets may be sold out, and you may find yourself stuck in traffic all the way from Kuala Lumpur and back.

How to Get to Kota Bharu, Kelantan

The Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR) is located 20 minutes from Kota Bharu city center and has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Subang, Penang, Kuching, and Kota Kinabalu. If you’re flying from other locations, you will likely have to transit in Kuala Lumpur. Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu take approximately 50 minutes.

There are direct buses from most major cities in Peninsular Malaysia. Tickets can be purchased at bus stations or through online apps like 12Go Asia or Redbus. Buses from Kuala Lumpur depart from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) and typically take around 8 hours, depending on traffic. Tickets cost around RM50.

There used to be direct sleeper trains from Kuala Lumpur, but not anymore. Now, you first have to backtrack south to Gemas, which takes about 2.5 hours and continue on the sleeper train for another 11 hours. The nearest station to Kota Bharu is the Wakaf Bharu station. Tickets can be purchased at the counter or on KTMB official website.

Driving from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu should take you around 7 hours if traffic is good and you don’t make too many stops along the way. From Kuala Lumpur, take the Karak Highway until you reach Bentong town, then merge onto Route 8 until you reach Kota Bharu.

How to Go to Kota Bharu from Thailand

If coming from Thailand, you need to get to the Thai border town of Sungai Kolok and cross the border on foot. Once you have completed the immigration process and entered the Malaysian town of Rantau Panjang, take Cityliner Bus No 29 to Kota Bharu. Journey takes about an hour.

How to Get Around in Kota Bharu

There are public buses in Kota Bharu, but just like anywhere else in Malaysia, they are not always on time. Your other options are taxis and Grab, a convenient e-hailing app that is used in all of Southeast Asia. We used Grab throughout our stay and never had any problem getting a driver in the city center.

Alternatively, renting a car gives you more freedom to go anywhere at your convenience and is a better option if you travel in a group.

Things to Do in Kota Bharu, Kelantan

1. visit museums.

For a small town, Kota Bharu has a good number of museums for you to learn about the local history, religion and culture. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Muzium Negeri Kelantan (Kelantan State Museum)
  • Memorial Peperangan Dunia Ke-II (World War II Memorial)
  • Muzium Islam (Museum of Islamic Culture)
  • Muzium Kraftangan (Handicraft Museum)

2. Learn About the Royal Family

have halal will travel kota bharu

Apart from the above, there are two other museums that are dedicated to the royal family of Kelantan, namely:

  • Muzium Diraja Istana Batu (Royal History Museum) – contains photos of the current and previous Sultans and the royal family members.
  • Istana Jahar / Muzium Adat Istiadat DiRaja Kelantan  (Museum of Royal Kelantanese Traditions) – features interesting artifacts and exhibits of the royal rituals and traditions.

Located nearby is Istana Balai Besar, an old wooden palace that served as the official residence of past Sultans but is now used for official state functions. It is not open to public but you can admire the intricately-designed wooden gate outside.

3. Shop at Pasar Siti Khadijah

have halal will travel kota bharu

Probably one of the most photographed attractions in Kota Bharu, this multi-story octagonal building houses a lively market selling a variety of items.

On the ground floor is fresh produce including local fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood, on the first floor are the dry goods such as grains, spices and fish crackers, while on the second floor are clothes and home wares. An interesting thing to note is that most of the sellers are women. Go in the early morning when it is most active.

4. Stuff Yourself with Local Food

Things to do in Kota Bharu, Kelantan

Eating the local food is our main reason for visiting. Kelantanese food is unique and hard to find anywhere else in Malaysia. Although some of them (like nasi kerabu and ayam percik) are becoming more widely available in Kuala Lumpur, nothing can beat the original!

5. Picnic at the Beach

There are many beaches along the coast of Kelantan that are worth visiting but the closest ones to Kota Bharu are:

  • Pantai Cahaya Bulan – often shortened to PCB, it was previously known as Pantai Cinta Berahi, which translates to Passionate Love Beach. Unfortunately, the Islamic party decided that it sounded inappropriate, so they changed it to the new name, which means Moonlight Beach. The beach is pretty decent but not the prettiest.
  • Pantai Nusuk – this beach was previously covered in dense bushes but was later cleaned and turned into a recreational spot. It’s become more popular now but can still be quite tricky to find. Hence its name, which literally means “hidden beach”.
  • Pantai Senok – dubbed by the locals as “Malaysia’s Nami Island”, this beach has rows and rows of pine trees, making it very popular for photoshoots.

Close to the beach, you can find many seafood restaurants and shops selling fish snacks, traditional kites and batik. Don’t forget to try the coconut milkshake!

6. Watch a Cultural Show

have halal will travel kota bharu

Kelantan has a rich cultural heritage, which includes performing arts like traditional and ritualistic dances, shadow puppetry and group singing. Unfortunately, some of these have been banned by the state government due to religious reasons. Nevertheless, you can still visit Gelanggang Seni Cultural Center for local cultural events, such as top spinning, kite-making, drumming and silat (a Malay martial art).

7. Check Out Local Arts & Crafts

have halal will travel kota bharu

Apart from the Handicraft Museum, you can also walk in to the many craft and clothes shops in the town center to see the local arts and crafts. The most popular ones are hand-drawn batik, silverware, crystals and gemstones, and traditional kites. There are also some batik centers where you can see the process of batik making and maybe try your hand at it.

8. Marvel at Street Art

Street art in Kota Bharu

If you like street art, Kota Bharu has an impressive collection of murals in several alleyways between Jalan Ismail and Jalan Dato Pati.

The images depict the cultural traditions of different ethnicities Kelantan, local food, natural scenery, and even the conflicts in the Middle East.

9. Visit a Mosque

Masjid Muhammadi Kota Bharu

A trip to the most Islamic state in Malaysia would not be complete without visiting at least one of its mosques. There is at least one in every neighborhood, each unique in its own way, but if you only have time to visit one, go for the state mosque, Masjid Muhammadi, located in the city center.

Non-Muslim visitors who wish to enter the mosque will have to enquire first at the International Islamic Information Center at Taman Hijau (about 100 meters from the mosque). Make sure to wear appropriate attire!

10. Go Cafe-Hopping

Instagrammable cafes in Kota Bharu Kelantan

Kota Bharu is no longer just about history, religion, and arts. Now, more and more hipster cafes have cropped up with photo-worthy decors to lure in Instagrammers and coffee lovers. Check out Nasken Coffee, Jubilee Antique Cafe (Kelatefornia), Kopi Mesin and Volt Coffee, among many others.

11. Ride on a Trishaw

have halal will travel kota bharu

Unlike the ones in Malacca that are all primped up with popular cartoon characters and blasting loud music, the trishaws in Kota Bharu are more low-key and are used by locals in their daily lives, not just tourists.

They are human-powered and are meant for short-distance journeys. Sometimes, when going uphill, passengers may have to alight for a minute while the driver pushes the trishaw up the hill.

Probably not the most comfortable of rides, but fun nonetheless!

How Long to Stay in Kota Bharu

Allocate at least 2 – 3 days in the town area to explore all of the attractions. On top of that, you can make a day trip to the beach or stay for another night or two. If you have more time, consider visiting surrounding towns like Tumpat, Bachok and Dabong, as they each have their own unique attractions.

We only stayed in Kota Bharu and didn’t do much sightseeing to be honest, but we still felt that four days were too short, because there were so many delicious foods to try and not enough space in our tummies to fit everything in!

Where to Stay in Kota Bharu, Kelantan

During our visit, we stayed at Aslah Boutique Hotel , due to its affordable rate and excellent location which is right in the city center, within walking distance from all the major attractions. However, at the time of writing, they are no longer taking reservations on Booking.com.

The following are other good options:

W Hotel Cemerlang – This 2-star hotel is located 1.4 km from the Handicraft Village and Craft Museum. All rooms are air-conditioned and fitted with a flat-screen TV, a desk and a private bathroom with free toiletries. Room service is available. From MYR 77 for a Deluxe Twin Room.

Additional Tips for Visiting Kota Bharu

  • Avoid visiting during school holidays, but if you must, book tickets early to avoid disappointment.
  • Kelantan is a conservative Islamic state that adheres quite strictly to Islamic teachings. Shops may close for 15-20 minutes several times a day for daily prayers.
  • Weekend is Friday and Saturday. Shops may still be open, but expect them to close for a couple of hours for Friday prayers.
  • The Kelantanese are known to have a sweet tooth. If you’re watching your sugar intake, make sure to ask for less sweet when ordering drinks.

What to Wear in Kota Bharu, Kelantan

Visitors are expected to dress more modestly. Women should keep their shoulders and legs covered. However, head covering is not compulsory except when entering mosques. Bikinis are not allowed in public areas. This includes beaches and swimming pools. Most local women swim fully clothed or in long swimwear. For men, avoid short shorts; they should go below your knees.

Final Thoughts

have halal will travel kota bharu

If you’re interested in a unique culture that is still Malaysian but completely different from that in the west coast, then Kota Bharu is a place you must not miss.

It may be less popular than other destinations like Penang, Malacca and Langkawi, but I think this underrated place deserves more attention — even if there are some conservative rules that we may not necessarily agree with.

The Kelantanese are friendly and welcoming people who are fiercely proud of their culture, food, religion, state, political party and royal family.

So, be respectful, and avoid touching on these sensitive subjects if you can, so as not to offend anyone.

25 Best Things to Do in Kota Bharu (Malaysia)

Kota Bharu means ‘New City’ in Malay which is a bit of a misnomer as this is actually one of the most traditional places in all of Malaysia. Kota Bharu (which is sometimes also spelled Kota Baru) is the capital of the state of Kelantan on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia and many people simply visit it as part of a trip to the lush Perhentian Islands off the coast. Simply using Kota Bharu as an entry and exit point is a shame however, as there is plenty to enjoy here for a few days and you will get to see a completely different side of the country.

The east coast of Malaysia is known for being far more conservative than the west coast and the central region, but this allows you to get a glimpse of a fascinating culture here. This includes beautiful Islamic architecture in the form of graceful mosques and you can also enjoy traditional museums and a range of toothsome local dishes that are unique to the state of Kelantan.

Here are the best things to do in Kota Bharu:

1. Have breakfast at Restoran Capital

Nasi Kerabu

If you want to kick off a trip to Kota Bharu with one of the best breakfasts in the city then head to Restoran Capital where you can try a local favorite called Nasi Kerabu which includes blue rice and a number of delicious curries that you will only find in Kelantan.

A plate of Nasi Kerabu comes with hard boiled eggs and crunchy prawn crackers and you can also get coffee or tea here if you just fancy a drink.

Bear in mind that this is more of a breakfast venue than anything and if you arrive after 9 am then the nasi kerabu may already be sold out. It’s that good.

2. Relax on Irama Beach

Irama Beach

Many people don’t immediately think of beaches when they think of Kota Bharu, although if you are prepared to explore outside the main city center then you will be rewarded with a number of choices.

One of the most famous of these is Irama Beach which means ‘Melody Beach’ in Malay.

The beach is known for its stretch of sand as well as its little local stalls which will sell you a fresh coconut and make the perfect place to stop off in the afternoon and relax.

3. Ride on the Jungle Railway

Jungle Railway

The Jungle Railway is one of the main reasons why many people travel to Kota Bharu in the first place.

The railway runs along the east coast and through the center of Malaysia and passes through Kelantan where it stops at the city of Tumpat.

When you travel on the railway, you can spend time enjoying the amazing jungle views and the train carriages hark back to another era when one of the only ways to travel here was by train.

4. Tour Istana Jahar

Istana Jahar

One of the best museums in Kota Bharu is Istana Jahar which dates from 1887. As such this is one of the prettiest buildings in the city in its own right and it contains an amazing display of craft objects from the state of Kelantan such as batik pieces which are weaved in the traditional style.

The museum will also take you on a walk through a range of local ceremonies such as a circumcision ceremony using diagrams and photographs, and you can even learn about Kelantanese weddings and funerals.

5. Take a boat ride down the Galas River

Galas River Cruise

The Galas River is one of the main rivers in Kelantan and is also a tributary of the main river artery in the state known as the Kelantan River.

Many people come to Kelantan to take a boat ride down the river and this is one of the most magical experiences that you can have in this part of Malaysia.

The river snakes through thick areas of jungle and you can choose different kinds of tours such as short jaunts up the river or longer trips that can take several days if you are game.

6. Visit Bank Kerapu

Bank Kerapu

Bank Kerapu was built in 1912 as part of the Mercantile Bank of India.

As such it is one of the best examples of colonial architecture in Kota Bharu and during the Second World War it would have been the home of the Kempai Tai who were the secret police force of the Japanese forces.

As a result, the bank is also a War Museum and you can learn all about the Japanese invasion and subsequent occupation of Malaysia in World War Two.

Some of the memorabilia on show includes old photographs as well as some ancient weaponry.

7. Walk along Pantai Cahaya Bulan

Pantai Cahaya Bulan

Pantai Cahaya Bulan means Moonlight Beach in Malay and is one of the premium beaches in the Kota Bharu area.

Interestingly, it used to be known as Pantai Cinta Berahi which means the Beach of Passionate Love, and so the locals, perhaps fearful of visitors to the beach taking this literally, decided to change the name to something more chaste.

Nowadays the beach is usually referred to as PCB and you will find a strip of sand here that backs on to some delightful little restaurants that sell local seafood dishes.

This mostly consist of grilled fish called ‘ikan bakar’ so try and time your visit to coincide with lunch or dinner.

8. Admire Istana Batu

Istana Batu

You will know Istana Batu when you see it as it is painted a pastel yellow and dates from 1939. Istana Batu used to be the official palace of the crown prince of Kelantan who then donated it to the state as a museum.

As such, if you want to see how a traditional Kelantanese price would have lived then this is the place to do it and you will find opulent rooms here as well as family memorabilia and collections that would have belonged to the royal family.

One of the main highlights includes a quirky collection of hats that would have once belonged to the late prince.

9. Stop off at Muhibah Aneka Cake House

Coffee

This is the spot to visit if you want to order a good cup of coffee and you can also choose from the well stocked bakery.

Some of the treats on offer here include traditional cakes, iced puddings and pillowy doughnuts.

Many cafes in Kelantan do not serve a huge selection of coffees and teas outside the usual traditional beverages but at Muhibah Aneka Cake House you can order all manner of delights such as a green tea frappe or an iced cappuccino.

10. Watch a show at Gelanggang Seni

Gelanggang Seni

Gelanggang Seni is the name for the cultural center in Kota Bharu so if you want to see some traditional arts here then you need to make sure that you do not miss this off the itinerary.

There are also kite making, drumming, and puppet shows here and younger visitors can also participate as many of the performances are geared towards children.

The best thing to do if you want to see a show is visit the local tourist office and find out the latest schedule.

11. Eat at Sri Devi Restaurant

Roti Canai

Sri Devi Restaurant is a Tamil influenced eatery in Kota Bharu which serves up traditional banana leaf curries as well as delicious mango lassi which is a drink made with yoghurt.

Other Tamil dishes here include roti canai which is a kind of flat bread which is served with a curry dipping sauce.

This kind of food can be found all over Malaysia in areas with a Tamil community and it makes a nice change of pace from the usual fare found in the local night markets.

12. Visit Wat Machimmaram

Wat Machimmaram

If you fancy a quick trip out of the center of Kota Bharu then think about heading to Wat Machimmaram which is one of the premium temples in the area.

Wat Machimmaram is known primarily for its amazing and ornate art work which is found inside.

This is a Buddhist temple and you will find tableaus that tell the story of different Buddhist visions of heaven and hell.

13. Have lunch at Westlake Eating House

Roast Duck

Westlake Eating House is something of an anomaly in Kota Bharu as it is a Chinese restaurant and is actually famous along the east coast of Malaysia.

Most of the population here is Muslim and the food follows suit accordingly so if you are craving some pork then come here for the toothsome braised ribs.

You can also try roast duck or stuffed bean curd and they also do some delicious vegetarian stir fries.

14. Shop at the Central Market

Central Market Kota Bharu

One of the main attractions in Kota Bharu is its main market which is famed as being one of the best local markets in the whole of Malaysia.

The market comes in two forms and the ground floor area is made up of fresh produce.

This comes in the form of colorful local fruits and vegetables as well as fish, meat and seafood.

When it comes to the upper floor, you will find spices, brassware and textiles and this can be a great place to come and pick up some cheap and authentic Malaysian batik.

As with many markets in Asia you will also find a number of food stalls here if you want to grab a lunchtime snack.

15. Have coffee at Kedai Kopi White House

Coffee

If you are looking for a coffee shop with a difference then take a trip to the Kedai Kopi White House.

16. Visit Muzium Islam

Muzium Islam

The Muzium Islam is located in a villa which is called Serambi Mekah (the Verandah of Mecca in Malay). This tells you all you need to know about the religious fervor in Kota Bharu and this is a top spot if you want to learn more about the history of Islam in Kelantan.

Some of the collections on show here include photographs of Kota Bharu through the ages as well as fascinating Islamic artifacts.

17. Have a drink at Restoran Golden City

Beer

As Kota Bharu is one of the most conservative spots in Malaysia which means that beer, or any kind of alcohol for that matter, is not widely available in the city.

One place that you can get a glass of cold beer however is in the Chinatown area of Kota Bharu such as Restoran Golden City.

This restaurant is actually less of a restaurant and more of a sports bar and you can sip cold pints of Tiger beer during their happy hour which runs from 4 pm to 9 pm.

18. Visit Muzium Negeri Kelantan

Muzium Negeri Kelantan

The Muzium Negeri Kelantan is conveniently located next to the main tourist information center in Kelantan and is known as the official state museum.

The museum tells the story of the state and also of the rise of Kota Bharu and you will find a range of galleries dedicated to history and culture in the region.

Kampung Kraftangan

Another one of the main markets in Kota Bharu is called Kampung Kraftangan and is located opposite Istana Batu.

The market also has an adjoining museum which tells you more about arts and crafts in Kelantan such as woodcarving, batik making, puppet making and brass ware.

20. Take a trip to Gua Ikan

Gua Ikan

Gua Ikan means Fish Cave in Malay.

The locals claim that the reason for this is that there are a number of small streams that bisect the cave and which are the home to cave dwelling fish.

The cave is around five kilometers away from Dabong on the Jungle Railway and it makes a good place to come if you have exhausted all the sights of Kota Bharu and want to see something a little different when you are on your way out of the city.

Other caves in the area around Gua Ikan include Gua Keris which is so called because it has a large stalactite inside that looks like a ‘keris’ which is the Malay words for ‘dagger’.

Top 13 Things To Do In Kota Bharu [2024]

Kota Bharu, Malaysia’s northernmost major city in the state of Kelantan, can often just be a blip on traveller’s radars as they move on to Perhentian Islands and sights further south. This is a shame as there are plenty of activities in Kota Bharu if you have a little more time on your hands.

While Kota Bharu tourist attractions may be low key, this is a nice city to visit where you can see another slice of Malaysia with its traditional Malay heritage and primarily devout Muslim population. Being close to the Thai border, there are also slices of Thai culture around here too.

It’s a city of over 300,000 people which gives it a good energy while still having a compact centre. It definitely has a different feel than other Malaysian cities as this bigger Muslim influence is evident.

Most of the best things to do in Kota Bharu are located within walking distance to each other meaning that even if you only have a day, you can still see many of the places to visit in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Top 14 Things To Do In Kota Bharu [2021]

Learn Kelantanese Culture At Istana Jahar Museum

Istana Jahar

This is the best museum attraction in Kota Bharu where you can learn about Kelantanese ritual and crafts. You can learn about batik weaving, jewellery, clothing and ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and circumcision. You can also see old weapons and a long boat.

It’s an interesting place and it’s housed in a gorgeous traditional building built in 1887, and definitely a contender for the best place in Kota Bharu for history. I could have spent an hour or two here reading about the ceremonies.

Inside Istana Jahar

If you love learning about the traditional culture of the place, this should be your top place to go in Kota Bharu. Signs are in English and Malay. If you are interested in Malaysian history, I recommend this Kota Bharu place to visit for an hour or two.

Current cost for foreigners is RM4 adults and RM2 for kids with Malaysians paying half this.

Have A Coffee At Kedai Kopi White House

Kedai Kopi White House Kota Bharu

When you have finished looking at Istana Jahar, next on your list of Kota Bharu activities is to pop into this Chinese coffee house for a very local experience and a pick me up! Perfectly located by this museum and surrounded by many others, it’s a stop that’s very easy to fit into your itinerary as well.

You can find it just to the right as you exit Istana Jahar and to the right again at the corner. Look for orange brick.

Only open mornings.

Learn The History Of Islam In The State At Muzium Islam

Muzium Islam

Muzium Islam tells the history of Islam in the state of Kelantan via photos and artefacts. It’s housed in old villa which was once the first school of Islamic instruction.

Current cost for foreigners is RM4 adults and RM2 for kids with Malaysians paying half this.

Learn About Royal Life At Istana Batu

Istana Batu Kota Bharu

Housed in a pretty building constructed in 1939 that was once the crown Prince’s palace, this is now a museum about royal life in Kelantan with decorated rooms, family photos and personal belongings.

It also displays the history of the Kelantan Sultanate and gives you an insight into what their life may have been like. Although the history part is only in Malay for the most part.

Istana Batu furnished room Kota Bharu

It’s worth a quick visit to see a different side of life in Kelantan.

See Handicrafts At Kampung Kraftangan

Kampung Kraftangan

If you’re looking for things to do in Kelantan, this small handicraft museum opposite Istana Batu is housed in another great looking building built in the 90s with only locally sourced materials and carvings. There are different types of weaving, batik and embroidery on display and some of the collection is for sale.

If you’re interested in what to do in Kelantan, then this is a good place to learn more about the traditional culture of the region.

Even if you aren’t interested in the museum part, you can enter the grounds and just enjoy the nice surrounds.

Shop At Central Market

Central Market Kelantan Kota Bharu attractions

Located close to the museums listed above, the Central Market is worth a stop as it’s one of the most colourful in Malaysia! Early morning is the best time when it’s likely to be most active.

Although it’s far from a tourist attraction or one of the typical places of interest in Kota Bharu, it was one of the best markets we have seen in this part of Malaysia and a great place to soak up the atmosphere.

Downstairs is all about fresh produce whereas upstairs you can find batik, spice and home wares. There is also a great array of food stalls if you are hungry.

Restaurants at Central Market, Kota Bharu

There is particularly a great area to sit down and enjoy some lunch in the street between the Central Market and the Bazaar next door. We had a great meal here!

Open daily 7:30am – 5:30pm but it’s best to visit before noon.

Check Out Local Handicrafts At Bazaar Buluh Kubu

womens clothing stalls at Bazaar Buluh Kubu, Kota Bharu

Across from the Central Market is the Bazaar Buluh Kubu. This is the place to go to buy batik, clothing and other local handicrafts like handmade shoes, kites and musical instruments.

It’s a good place to go to get a unique souvenir although it was majority women’s clothing stalls when we went.

Open 9am – 6pm except Fridays.

Visit Muzium Negeri Kelantan (Kelantan State Museum)

Kelantan State Museum

Muzium Negeri Kelantan is the Kota Bharu attraction to visit to learn more about the history and culture of the state, and features prominently on the Kota Bharu tourism recommended things to do list.

Unfortunately, this museum is small without many exhibits and the signs aren’t very good. Most are just in Malay and ones in English are often too far away to read them or poorly lit. This makes it hard to get as much out of this museum as you could.

However, there are some cool exhibits like caves, musical instruments and shadow puppets.

have halal will travel kota bharu

What was very cool when we visited and makes this museum a great place to visit in Kota Bharu is that there was a big exhibit on games and old games consoles.

This was all signed in Malay only. However, you can play many of the games and they are so much fun! It was also well air conditioned in this area so perfect if you have some time to kill or have kids. It was definitely hard to get my 7 year old to leave, and is definitely an option I’d recommend if you’re wondering what to do in Kota Bahru with kids – although, I’m not sure if that exhibit is staying.

Entry costs were weird. We were charged RM4 for an adult and RM5 for 2 kids – even though I only had one. So RM9 in total for one adult and one kid and not what their website says. Malaysians should be half price.

Experience Traditional Arts At Gelanggang Seni Cultural Centre

This cultural centre is the place to go for local cultural events like top-spinning, kite-making, puppet shows, drumming and silat (a Malay martial art). Events are held regularly from February to October except during Ramadan.

Admission is free! Opening hours are 3pm – 5:30pm, Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and it’s usually open one evening a week as well. However, these can vary and, sadly, they don’t have the latest opening hours and shows online. It’s best to stop by the Kelantan Tourist Information Centre before visiting.

Check Out Colourful Street Art

Streetart Gallery, Kota Bharu

If history is not you’re thing and you’re in search of things to do in Kota Bahru, then the Streetart Gallery is worth adding to your list of what to see in Kota Bharu – as the street art Kota Bharu is well worth a look.

Located between several connecting alley ways between Jalan Ismail and Jalan Dato Pati (see map below) are these impressions of both happy images of locals living and working and the surrounding jungle as well as pictures of the suffering and conflict in the Middle East.

Streetart Gallery, Kota Bharu

It’s worth the short walk from the markets and museums.

We also found a second alley with street art close to the main bus station. It runs parallel to the bus station a few blocks away when walking towards Istana Jahar.

Both alleys had bird tweets playing on speakers. I’m not really sure why.

Visit Pantai Cahaya Bulan (Moonlight Beach)

Pantai Cahaya Bulan

If you would like some beach time and are looking for more Kelantan things to do, then Pantai Cahaya Bulan is your best choice close to Kota Bharu. It’s about a 30 minute drive from downtown Kota Bharu and, while a nice stretch, there are problems with sand erosion.

If you are heading to other beach areas, I would give it a miss unless you want a good seafood lunch as this is a good place for one. The beach is nice, but there are many much nicer beaches on the Perhentian Islands if that’s where you’re headed, or on other parts of the mainland.

Check Out Wat Machimmaram And The Tumpat Region

Wat Machimmaram

For an excellent half day or full day trip from Kota Bharu, I highly recommend visiting the Tumpat temple area north of Kota Bharu bordering Thailand.

There are numerous Thai Buddhist temples here as well as picturesque villages. It’s an interesting mix of Thai, Malay and Chinese influences.

The best way to visit is via a day tour that your accommodation or the Kelantan Tourist Information Centre can organise. Otherwise, you can hire a taxi for a half day or full day to drive you around to the temples of your choice.

The best starting point is Wat Machimmaram. This 50 metre high seated Buddha makes for quite a sight. Inside the temple are murals in both Chinese and Thai style as are the designs of the temple compound. There is also a turtle pond, amulet shop and food and drinks.

It is open daily 9am – 5pm but shut from 12:30pm – 2pm. Entry is free but donations are appreciated.

Eat Everything At Kota Bharu Night Market

food at Kota Bharu night market

This city isn’t known for its nightlife so the best option for what to do in Kota Bharu at night is definitely this night market!

Located a couple of blocks from the central market and open every night, this is the best place to try the local food and grab some tasty bargains.

Try everything that you can!

One Day Itinerary In Kota Bharu

This itinerary starts with a loop of all the Kota Bharu town attractions. You can walk between them. Most of the attractions do not take long, so I have also included an optional afternoon day trip that you can do if you have time. This really depends on whether you want to enter every museum and see every exhibit and how much you like shopping.

This itinerary starts at the markets, moves on to the Cultural Zone where most the museums above are located as well as some other traditional buildings and then the state museum. Note that on a Friday, many of these attractions are shut.

Kota Bharu Itinerary

  • Start the day at the Central Market. Eat breakfast here
  • If you want to see local handicrafts, take a look at Bazaar Buluh Kubu and then the handicraft museum, Kampung Kraftangan
  • Learn about royal life at Istana Batu
  • Learn about local culture at Istana Jahar
  • Top up with some coffee at the Kedai Kopi White House
  • Optionally, visit the Muzium Islam
  • Walk to the Streetart Gallery
  • Finish with the Muzium Negeri Kelantan

At this point you can:

  • Watch a performance at Gelanggang Seni Cultural Centre OR
  • Head to Wat Machimmaram if you have enough time

In the evening, have dinner at the Kota Bharu night market.

If you just have a morning or afternoon before or after leaving Perhentian Islands, you can still do the first part of this itinerary; just only enter the attractions in Kota Bharu that most interest you.

If you are here in between ferries and flights, you can store your luggage at the central bus station. It’s RM1 for small bags, RM2 for big. Our bags were carry on size and still considered big though.

Where To Stay In Kota Bharu

In my opinion, the best area to stay in Kota Bharu is in the downtown area in or near the cultural zone so you can walk to most the attractions above. Here are my top options depending on your budget.

Hotel Perdana:  Best Hotel In Kota Bharu

have halal will travel kota bharu

This 4 star hotel is my top pick of the hotels in Kota Bharu. This is because it’s a short walk from the museums and markets, has a great range of room types, a good variety of facilities and consistently gets great reviews. It’s also a great price with rooms starting at around RM200.

You can chose between standard hotel rooms, pool view rooms and suites, all the way up to a presidential suite! After a hot and sweaty day sightseeing, you can relax in the pool. There is also a gym, business centre and a range of eating and drinking options.

Some rooms are on the older side and could do with a renovation, but the hotel is still great value and your best choice in Kota Bharu.

Click here for the latest prices.

W Hotel Cemerlang:  Best Budget Option

have halal will travel kota bharu

This 2 star hotel is a bargain about a kilometre’s walk from the Central Market. It’s not as centrally located as the Hotel Perdana but it’s close enough to walk to the cultural zone or you can get a cheap taxi to avoid the heat.

There are single, double and triple rooms as well as suites including a family suite with bedding for four. Rooms come with private bathrooms, desks, wifi and air-conditioning. They are on the small side.

With prices starting at RM100, there isn’t much in the way of facilities but there are restaurants nearby.

Getting To Kota Bharu

Kota Bharu bus station

Kota Bharu is quite easy to get to since it is a major city for this part of Malaysia.

There is an airport with daily flights from Kuala Lumpur and Penang as well as regular flights to Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Melaka and Singapore. You can search for flights here.

There are direct buses from many parts of Malaysia which you can search for here.

A more exciting way to get to Kota Bharu is via the jungle railway. The nearest station is around 10 kilometres away at Wakaf Baharu. The train starts in Johor Bahru and travels through Malaysia’s interior. You can also take a train from Kuala Lumpur and change in Gemas to the jungle railway.

Click here to see the jungle trains route, the schedule and latest prices.

You can also take a private, long-distance taxi here from anywhere in peninsula Malaysia. We can book it for you with a safe and trustworthy local operator.

Click here for more details and prices.

If you are coming to or from the Perhentian Islands, read our detailed guide for how to get there by clicking here. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur, read our detailed guide here .

Getting Around Kota Bharu

There is a decent bus system in Kota Bharu that will get you to most attractions, although it is much easier to get taxis. Use the Grab phone app to order one and set the price.

Many of the attractions are within walking distance to each other so you can cover off many attractions on this things to do list without needing transport once you are in the centre.

Kota Bharu With Kids

Duplo table for kids at Kelantan State Museum

I visited Kota Bharu with my 7 year old. While the city attractions aren’t particularly kid friendly, the games exhibit at the Kelantan State Museum is definitely a highlight. He could have stayed here forever. They even have a duplo table for little ones. I am not sure how long this is staying here though.

Otherwise, my son enjoyed the weapons exhibited at Istana Jahar and the temples in the Tumpat region work well with kids.

Final Words

Many travellers pass straight through Kota Bharu on their way to Perhentian Islands which is a shame – don’t be one of them! There’s definitely plenty to see in Kota Bharu to make it worth staying a little longer.

Kota Bharu is a different part of Malaysia which is interesting to explore, and it’s also a chance to see some of Malaysia that’s off the beaten tourist path and get away from crowds of backpackers. It’s a really easy place to visit a range of attractions thanks to most things being located close together. It is also worth taking the time to get to the Tumpat region to see yet another side of this great country.

Given the more devout Muslim population relative to other places in Malaysia, I had worried about how I should dress as a woman. I wore trousers and a t shirt which covered my shoulders. This seemed fine and I felt perfectly comfortable.

I would not have felt comfortable wearing less than this though – I only saw one (Chinese background) woman who wasn’t wearing a head covering and the women definitely dress more conservatively here than elsewhere with the Indian and Chinese background populations being far less represented from what we saw on our wanderings.

I only saw two other obvious foreigners here which added to the experience – it felt like I had ventured somewhere far away (in a very cool way) when Kota Bharu really isn’t!

So, even if you just have a day or an afternoon/morning you can see quite a few attractions and it’s worth taking the time.

Kota Bharu Guide: Gateway to the Beautiful Perhentian Islands and a Lesser-known Malaysia

have halal will travel kota bharu

From jungle walks to local markets, this Kota Bharu guide tells all about this fairly undiscovered Malaysian city (and how to get to the beautiful Perhentian Islands!).

With a direct flight just 1 hour 15 minutes from Singapore, Kota Bharu is the laidback cultural centre of Kelantan state that offers unexpectedly great shopping, delicious dining, and breathtaking outdoors.

Our 4D3N trip to Kota Bharu was certainly unique — we met warm and friendly locals, ate great Kelantanese food, and got to understand the rich cultural heritage of Kelantan. Fun fact: Kota Bharu’s vibrant Kelantanese Malay culture also has Thai and Indian influences!

The seemingly sleepy town is actually a lot more bustling than you’d imagine, which makes it fantastic for anyone looking for something different within the Southeast Asian region.

Besides being a cultural hub, Kota Bharu is also the gateway to the crazily scenic Perhentian Islands , just a short ferry ride away (but more on that later). So if you’re looking for an affordable, exotic getaway that’s adventurous yet away from the city life, Kota Bharu should be next on your list!

Kota Bharu Travel Essentials

Snorkelling in perhentian kecil - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

Flights: Scoot flies three times a week directly from Singapore to Kota Bharu’s Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (KBR).

Getting around: The easiest way around Kota Bharu is via Grab (Southeast Asia’s Uber equivalent), and short-distance rides within the city cost between RM6 and RM12.

Staying connected: There’s only one telco shop at the Kota Bharu airport, and prepaid SIM cards sell for RM36 for 8GB of data that lasts for 15 days.

Snorkelling gear (optional): If you plan to snorkel in the Perhentian Islands! Alternatively, you can just rent from the resorts there.

Things to Do in Perhentian Islands (Around Kota Bharu)

Perhentian Kecil pathway to windmill point - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

Dubbed the Maldives of Malaysia, the Perhentian Islands are fairly untapped — which is why most backpackers touring Asia would stop by Kota Bharu just for these paradisiacal islands! While the Perhentian Islands are technically located in the state of Terengganu, it’s much easier to get there via Kota Bahru. It’s only 45 minutes by ferry from Kuala Besut Jetty (RM35), so there’s really no reason not to drop by.

Alternatively, you can book taxis, car charters, tours to the Perhentian Islands from Kota Bharu Airport’s arrival hall. Our Grab driver during the trip, Mr. Suhaimi (+60 12-954 1671) also offers charter services. Let him know Edelyn/Isaac sent you his way 😄

Note: Visitors must also pay a RM30 conservation fee before entering the island.

1) 3-point snorkelling in Pulau Perhentian Kecil

Snorkel excursion perhentian kecil - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

The waters around Perhentian Kecil are so clear, it’ll be a shame not to snorkel while you’re there. Either bring your own gear or rent them from the resorts nearby! If you’re a noob like me and would rather frolick around the sea in the presence of experts, almost all the resorts on Perhentian Kecil organise group excursions.

Typically, snorkelling excursions cover these three points — Fish Garden, Shark Point, and Turtle Point. Not a strong swimmer? No worries, life jackets will be provided upon request!

If you’re lucky, you’ll get to spot sea turtles at Turtle Point!

Cost: ~RM60/pax Duration & Timing: ~2 hours. Excursion timing varies (do check with your resort upon check-in!).

2) Jungle walk through Pulau Perhentian Kecil

Perhentian Kecil jungle walk - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

The only way of getting around the island other than via water taxis would be walking through the island’s dense jungle. Proper foot and dirt paths connect places like Fisherman Village, Mira Beach, Sandy Beach, Coral Bay, Romantic Beach, and Long Beach .

Perhentian Island beach jungle walk - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

The walks aren’t difficult but do take note that certain routes are dirt paths that can be slippery due to fallen leaves and loose gravels.

Perhentian Kecil jungle walk to windmill point - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

If you’re more adventurous, walk from Long Beach to Windmill Point ( kincir angin ) for probably the best lookout on the whole island. The walk is a beaten path that’s slightly steeper with less shade from trees (40-min walk), and once you see the windmills, the viewpoint is to the right.

Perhentian island kecil windmill point lookout - Kota Bharu Guide Perhentian Islands

Windmill Point used to be one of the main attractions of Perhentian Kecil, but large waves and weather have badly damaged the pathway and is no longer safe to visit 😞. The vantage point where I took the picture above from is the safest point to get a photo from (not the guy!).

Getting around Perhentian Islands

Pulau Perhentian Kecil

For our trip, we visited the smaller of the two islands, Pulau Perhentian Kecil , which is supposedly less touristy. We advise spending at least three days there — we only did two and had to rush to see everything! Do pack proper walking shoes (on top of your beach essentials, of course) as there are no roads on Perhentian Kecil (footpaths link the beaches and lookout points instead).

Places to Shop in Kota Bharu

3) shop for cheap local buys at wakaf che yeh night market.

Kota Bharu Wakaf Che Yeh Night market - Places to Shop in Kota Bharu

A wholesale and wet market by day, Wakaf Che Yeh turns into a massive night bazaar by night. Dozens, if not hundreds of stalls selling goods from fabric to food line up several streets around the area.

Kota Bharu Wakaf Che Yeh Night market fabric stall - Places to Shop in Kota Bharu

Most stalls sell fabric for baju kurung (a traditional Malay costume), headscarves, clothes, and even knockoff apparels. From what we noticed, the vendors don’t bring in multiple pieces of the same design, so you’ll most likely buy off the racks. Also, prices are pretty reasonable and we were actually turned down by the vendors when we tried haggling for lower prices. 😅

Opening Hours: 6PM – 3PM (Most stalls open at 8PM) Address: 15150 Kota Bharu, Kelantan

4) Siti Khadijah Market

Another market that’s quite an attraction is the Siti Khadijah Market located in the city centre of Kota Bharu. The bustling market was opened in 1985 by the Sultan of Kelantan, and was once known as the “ buluh kubu market”. It was renamed in 1997 to Siti Khadijah, after the wife of Prophet Muhammad, as a sign of respect for women, as a majority of its traders are female.

The four-storey octagonal market is segmented by levels. The first floor has stalls selling mainly fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, and poultry. The second floor is mostly dried goods and spices, while you’ll find fabrics on the third floor.

Don’t miss the main square of the market as the colourful pillars make an unlikely but splendid photo spot!

5) Shop at the largest AEON Mall in all of Kota Bharu, Terengganu, and Pahang

Many Singaporeans consider Malaysia a shopping paradise and if you’re itching for some retail therapy in Kota Bharu, good news! Slightly away from the city centre is the largest AEON Mall in the Kelantan state, as well as neighbouring states of Terengganu and Pahang.

Opening Hours: 10AM – 10PM Address: Jalan Jambatan Sultan Yahaya Petra, Kampung Sirih, 15150 Kota Bharu, Kelantan

Historical Things to Do in Kota Bharu

You don’t have to dig deep to search for Kota Bharu’s history. At the city centre, you can find historical buildings and museums that showcases the rich history of Kota Bharu, of which, the Istana Jahar (former royal residence) and Handicraft Village are two more notable attractions that offer a peek into the history of the Kelantanese.

6) Learn more about Kelantanese Royalty at Istana Jahar

Things to Eat in Kota Bharu

People know Malaysia as a food haven, but in Kota Bharu, there are a few must-eat local dishes that are aside your usual Nasi Lemak or Mie Goreng. Instead, try the blue-grained Nasi Kerabu, or the Nasi Ulam that’s served with raw vegetables at the side for a simple yet wholesome local Kelantanese meal.

10) Kopitiam Kita

Breakfast kopitiam kita toast set - Things to Eat in Kota Bharu

Kopitiam Kita is a popular breakfast cafe among the locals for its toast and coffee. We highly recommend the roti titab special (RM6) — french toast topped with half-boiled eggs and kaya jam! Complete the meal with an order of kopi tarik (pulled coffee, RM3).

EVERY working individual looks forward to the end of the month when they get a regular monthly payment from their employer - as compensation for their unwavering hard work.

Salary has always been an important aspect of any profession (or undertaking) dating back to mediaeval times.

But is it true that the word “salary” comes from the word salt because sodium chloride was used as a wage in the past?

have halal will travel kota bharu

Soldiers in the Roman army were sometimes paid in salt.

The reason was to ensure that the people had sufficient rations, especially during campaigns where looking for the condiment was difficult.

Salt was also very limited, making it an expensive but vital commodity.

The monthly allowance was called “salarium”, in which “sal” derived from the Latin word for salt. Hence, the word "salary" came into being!
