Orlando Announces 74 Million Visitors in 2022, Ranking as No. 1 U.S. Travel Destination

ORLANDO, Fla. – Visit Orlando, The Official Tourism Association ® for Orlando, announced 74 million annual visitors in 2022. With a 25% increase in visitors over 2021, Orlando maintains its leadership position as America’s most-visited destination. By reaching 74 million visitors in 2022, Orlando achieved 98% of pre-pandemic (2019) levels.

“This past year proved to be a key recovery timeframe for Orlando’s tourism industry, with a lot of pent-up demand from our top U.S. and international markets,” said Casandra Matej, president and CEO for Visit Orlando. “Our new international brand launch and strong commitment to strategic sales and marketing initiatives, combined with our destination’s continuous evolution of new unbelievably real experiences, helped Orlando maintain its leadership position and achieve strong visitation numbers.”

Visit Orlando shared the news as part of National Travel & Tourism Week, the annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry, to a gathering of more than 900 tourism and community leaders.

The visitation uptick comes off the back of Visit Orlando’s new Unbelievably Real brand launch, first introduced in May 2022 to domestic visitors followed by an international marketing campaign in the U.K., Ireland, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Peru. The comprehensive campaigns reached 54% of Orlando’s target market households and generated more than $8 billion in additional future direct visitor spending equating to $359 in visitor spending for each dollar of media spent.

In 2022, domestic leisure visitation completely recovered and reached a new record at 61 million, while U.S. business visitation is still in recovery mode:

  • Leisure: 61,201,000
  • Business: 7,940,000

International visitation recovered to 75% of pre-pandemic, reaching 4.9 million in 2022. Canada, U.K. and Brazil were the top three international origin markets to Orlando.

  • Canada: 860,700
  • United Kingdom: 809,000
  • Brazil: 575,000
  • Mexico: 394,000
  • Colombia: 287,000

In 2023, Orlando, Theme Park Capital of the World, continues to grow with an exciting lineup of new experiences for visitors to enjoy - from a new eco-friendly, high speed rail service connecting Orlando and Miami to theme park experiences including a first-of-its-kind diabolical family attraction inspired by the Minions to the world’s first surf coaster. Americans’ top travel destinations and how they’re changing

Mexico was the top hot spot among Americans who booked travel as the COVID-19 pandemic came to a close.

A new Outbound Survey of International Travelers released by the National Travel and Tourism Office shows that 33.5 million Americans went to Mexico in 2022.

Not only does that make Mexico the most popular destination among Americans last year, but that figure also represents a 17% increase over the number of Americans who visited their neighbor to the south in 2021.

The top overseas destination for 2022, meanwhile, was the United Kingdom, which attracted 3.7 million American travelers.

Canada also welcomed its fair share of Americans in 2022. About 9.1 million to be exact, a figure that’s a whopping 334% over 2021.

A total of 80.7 million Americans traveled outside the country last year, which is 64% more than 2021. The 2022 figure amounts to 81% of travel levels from 2019 (when 99.7 million Americans traveled internationally.)

Additional report highlights for 2022 include:

  • American visitation to overseas countries in 2022 (38.1 million) increased 109% from 2021, which amounts to 85% of 2019 levels.
  • The top overseas countries visited were the United Kingdom (3.7 million), France (3.1 million), the Dominican Republic (2.7 million), Italy (2.6 million), and Germany/Spain (both 2.0 million).
  • Top states of residence for U.S. travelers to overseas destinations were California (5.4 million), New York (5.1 million), Florida (4.5 million), Texas (2.9 million), and New Jersey (2.5 million).

The report also revealed a variety of other noteworthy characteristics about Americans who traveled abroad in 2022.

For instance, those who did so were among the most affluent Americans: The average U.S. outbound traveler had a combined annual household income of $148,000. In addition, these same travelers stayed on vacation an average of 17.9 nights.

Two-thirds of those who participated in international travel last year did so to vacation, while 44% were visiting friends or relatives. Business travel continues to lag well behind, accounting for just 9% of international trips among Americans in 2022, not having fully recovered from the pandemic perhaps.

The travel industry’s recovery also continued as 2023 began, according to the SIAT report. For the second quarter of 2023, the number of U.S. outbound air travelers to overseas countries was up 8.9% over the second quarter of 2019.

The top overseas countries Americans are heading to this year? The United Kingdom still leads the pack with 1.6 million Americans headed to the country as of the second quarter of 2023. That’s a 25% increase over 2019.

Additional top destinations for the first two quarters of 2023 (compared with 2019 figures) include:

  • Italy: 1.5 million visitors, up 35%
  • France: 1.3 million, up 22%
  • Dominican Republic: 993,000, up 14%
  • Spain: 867,000 visitors, up 18%

The 15 Best Islands in the Continental U.S. in 2022

The best islands in the United States, according to Travel + Leisure readers, offer plenty of activities in addition to opportunities for waterfront relaxation.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite islands in the Continental U.S.

Americans don't have to go far to find themselves on one of the best islands in the continental U.S., but those who live in the Southeast will have the shortest journeys. Year after year, readers give resounding applause for destinations in Florida, which is home to five of this year's best islands. Four more favorites sit off the coasts of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. It's also worth noting that this category was the most competitive it has ever been, as domestic island vacations were many Travel + Leisure readers' first choice for vacations throughout the pandemic.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

In addition to its natural beauty, Amelia Island (No. 10) has several historic sites, including American Beach, an area that served as a haven for Black families during the Jim Crow era. In Fernandina Beach, visitors can spend an afternoon strolling through the lively town or kayaking. The popular oceanfront Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, has a spa, a standout kids' club, and an 18-hole championship golf course.

Sanibel Island (No. 13) has beaches with more than 250 types of shells and a 6,000-acre national wildlife refuge. The Sanibel Moorings Resort, which consists of 122 suites, has a private beach and a six-acre botanical garden, and guests can go on guided walks with a botanist or a marine biologist.

For all the Southeast's appeal, this year's top spot on the list of the best islands in the continental U.S. was taken by a Midwestern haven. Continue reading to learn about Mackinac Island, which also earned a place on our list of the world's best islands.

1. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Eighty percent of this roughly four-square-mile island on Lake Huron is protected as a state park. The family-friendly downtown has many restaurants, fudge shops, and galleries. There are also several golf courses, one of which, known as "Wawa," lies on a battlefield where the British captured the island from the Americans in the War of 1812. You can explore the island by foot, bike or horse-drawn carriage, but no cars are allowed. Accommodations include the Grand Hotel, which dates back to 1887 and earned the No. 6 spot on this year's list of the Best Hotels in the Midwest.

Score: 89.10

2. Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Located southwest of Charleston, Kiawah, which is also on this year's list of the best islands in the world, is a popular destination for golfers, but you don't need to pick up a club to fall in love. Bike to the pristine beaches for sightings of dolphins and nesting sea turtles, or just watch the waves from an oceanfront room at the five-star Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort — voted by readers as the No. 1 resort in South Carolina the past two years.

WBA Hall of Fame honoree. Score: 88.49

3. Nantucket, Massachusetts

Everything about Nantucket can be described as charming, from the rose-trellised cottages to the cobblestoned streets and scenic bike rides. Both its dining and restaurant scenes are booming. One of the newest lodgings: the 12-room luxury hotel Blue Iris by Life House.

Score: 84.53

4. San Juan Islands, Washington

Each destination in this archipelago between Seattle and Vancouver feels remote in the best possible way, with sweeping vistas and an array of outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, and whale-watching. Those who prefer a more leisurely stay will find indulgent farm-to-table meals, delicious wine from Washington State, galleries, and spas.

Score: 84.43

5. Golden Isles (Jekyll Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island, St. Simons Island), Georgia

Marshlands and nature trails lead to white-sand beaches. Key attractions here include nature trails and wonderful beaches, but these barrier islands also boast museums, golf courses, historic sites, and luxury hotels to keep everyone engaged on a cloudy day. Get off the grid and stay at one of the six cottages at the Lodge on Little St. Simons island, a private-island resort that includes 11,000 acres of undeveloped wilderness.

Score: 83.84

6. Outer Banks, North Carolina

This 175-mile-long chain of barrier islands is a beach-lover's dream. Lay down your towel on Corolla Beach, where, if you're lucky, you will see some of the wild Spanish mustangs that roam the islands.

Score: 83.57

7. Mount Desert Island, Maine

Acadia National Park covers most of this roughly 100-square-mile island. Nature-inclined visitors can spend days biking and hiking. Social options are equally robust, with annual music and food festivals and several picturesque towns, including Bar Harbor.

Score: 83.50

8. Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

There's something for everyone in this popular destination off of Cape Cod. Up Island, there are majestic cliffs dropping down into the Atlantic Ocean, storybook inns, and a quaint fishing village where you can buy shucked shellfish to eat while watching the sunset. Down Island, travelers will find vibrant villages like Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, where evenings are best spent at the lively bars and restaurants.

Score: 83.25

9. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

This Southern oasis is a perennial reader favorite thanks to its beaches, world-class golf courses, 60 miles of walking trails, and cultural offerings that can be enjoyed in flip-flops. Rental houses abound, but there are also resorts that will cater to your every whim.

Score: 82.99

10. Amelia Island, Florida

This small island draws visitors who relish its casual vibe and natural beauty. The northernmost barrier island on Florida's Atlantic coast — easily reached by car — appeals to beach lovers and history buffs, as well as food lovers, who eagerly await its Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, held each May.

Score: 82.98

11. Florida Keys

Passionate fishers, boaters, and divers flock to this string of islands, where they can take advantage of the only living coral barrier reef in the United States. Those who prefer their fun on land embrace Key West, with its relaxed vibe of pastel cottages and plethora of bars. Don't miss the grounds of the Hemingway Home and Museum, where the author's six-toed cat has lived on in future generations cared for by the museum's veterinarian.

Score: 82.88

12. Captiva Island, Florida

Located on the Gulf Coast, this island is known for its low-key vibe and beaches with abundant seashells. Many travelers opt to rent a vacation home, but there are also a handful of family-friendly hotels, including the South Seas Island Resort, which offers a marine-life–focused day camp for kids.

Score: 82.43

13. Sanibel Island, Florida

Captiva's sister island has equally beautiful beaches, but travelers will also find opportunities for offbeat fun, including the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum.

Score: 82.29

14. Block Island, Rhode Island

A ferry ride away from the mainland, this funky island enthusiastically welcomes not only people but their canines (they're allowed in the movie theater!). Rent a bike or moped, pausing for a lobster roll and a beer beachside, before checking in to one of the many bed and breakfasts.

Score: 81.84

15. Longboat Key, Florida

Its initial draw may be its 11 miles of white-sand beaches, but this island located off Sarasota also boasts golf courses and luxury hotels, including the Resort at Longboat Key Club, which has 226 rooms and suites, plus 45 holes of golf, 20 tennis courts, and a spa.

Score: 80.83

ABTA ’s  Travel in 2022  report showed a growing appetite among travellers to visit new destinations in the wake of post-pandemic travel, rather than sticking to their creature comfort destinations.

It’s all about rediscovering that elusive sense of adventure, says online and global platform  ToursByLocals  which is encouraging would-be travellers to favour more alternative locations in 2022 and replace those classic UK consumer breaks. The company offers a wide choice of customisable tours in 194 countries, led by expert guides. Travellers are offered authentic experiences in lesser-known destinations all through the eyes of a local.

Pula Arena, Croatia.

Suggestions include swapping Italy for Croatia,   and visiting the Pula Arena in Pula rather than the Colosseum in Rome.“The bonus is that   travellers won’t be bombarded by selfie sticks and gladiator costumes,” says ToursByLocals. “Nor will visitors need to wait around in laborious lines to view this architectural masterpiece.”

Not only is the landmark the only remaining Roman amphitheatre to have four side towers entirely preserved, it is also Croatia’s best-preserved ancient monument. Local guide  Ana  explains all this and more in her tour of the ancient battleground and the ancient city of Pula.

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid-19 travel insurance plans.

Other alternative suggestions include swapping the blue hues of city and sea in Santorini with the lesser known Chefchaouen, Morrocco, also known as the Blue Pearl City on the sea.

2.    GREEN MAPPING AND PURPOSEFUL TRAVEL

The latest trend predictions within travel and hospitality are included in  Wunderman Thompson ’s  The Future 100: 2022  – an annual trend almanac which offers a snapshot of the year ahead and the most compelling trends to keep on the radar.

‘ Green Mapping ’  is one such trend and one which sees   eco-conscious travellers opting for planet-first options and looking to brands for sustainable choices.

This rise in eco-awareness is endorsed by luxury tour operator  Audley Travel , which says that it remains firmly committed to responsible travel , having strived to work with local people and businesses in the destinations it operates in over its 25 years’ of arranging tailor-made trips.

Alex Bentley, head of product at Audley Travel says: “Responsible travel is very much part of Audley’s DNA. Not only do we feel this gives clients the best experience, it also brings benefits to local communities and motivates local people to preserve what attracts visitors.”

Pumpkin Island, Australia.

Audley Travel’s new additions for 2022 includes a new responsible tourism themed trip to Australia with a focus on eco-properties. The carefully curated itinerary stays away from the tourist hot-spots and is designed to operate with a minimal impact on the environment. Travel from Adelaide to Sydney, for instance, is via the lower carbon footprint option of the Indian Pacific train, while you can explore local boutique wineries by e-bike and kayak to see dolphins.

Getting close to nature at Pumpkin Island.

Accommodation includes the Old Leura Dairy in the Blue Mountains, a retreat that uses recycled materials for its self-contained villas. Pumpkin Island in the Keppel Group of islands in the Great Barrier Reef offers self-catering, eco-friendly units powered by the wind and sun. The resort is ‘beyond carbon neutral' as it offsets 150 per cent of the carbon generated by each guest visit. In the Flinders Ranges, travellers stay at Rawnsley Park Station, a property that commits itself to social and cultural responsibility and environmental sustainability.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba.

Another brand committee to purposeful travel is the  Banyan Tree Group , which has launched its ‘ Stay for Good ’ program, through the Banyan Tree Global Foundation.

One of the world’s leading independent hospitality groups, it is set to double its footprint of 54 properties across 23 countries by 2025 with the introduction of five new brands launching in the next 18 months.

“As a pioneer of purposeful stewardship and responsible tourism, this expanded global portfolio of 10 unique brands will allow us to increase our impact in the countries where it operates, while taking advantage of post-Covid growth opportunities in purposeful travel,” says Banyan Tree.

Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape.

All properties will abide by the ‘ Stay for Good ’ program, which is a structured framework that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. One of the core pillars is named the ‘Environment’,   within which a focus is placed on conserving ecosystems and promoting biodiversity through research and restoration, spearheaded by trained biologists via Banyan Tree Labs.

Guests can also participate in on-site sustainability and educational citizen science programs such as coral or tree planting, with over half a million trees planted since 2007. Additionally, the group’s commitment to annual reductions in energy emissions, water use and waste production is closely monitored by EarthCheck, the travel industry’s leading benchmark certification and environment management program.

3.    KIDS RULE OK

One leading trend identified in the 2022   Trend Report  from holiday rentals community brand  Vrbo  is a renewed focus on family travel .

Dive into family adventures with Vrbo.

“Over the past year, families have transformed their homes into classrooms, offices, and makeshift fitness studios,” says Vrbo. “Our survey showed that when it’s time to finally take that long-awaited trip, parents are more likely to reward their kids with extra-special vacations and give them a bigger say in travel planning. Half of the families said they’re more likely to let their kids decide where they vacation, compared to pre-pandemic times.’

Essentialist , a personalised travel-planning company, agrees and says that f amily travel is leading in popularity for 2022, but with less of an emphasis on multi-generational travel and more focus on reunions with friends and families together.

Top 10 Destinations for Summer 2022

As travel continues to ramp up for the remainder of 2022, most travelers already have their summer vacation plans buttoned up. So far, we have seen almost double the summer bookings for 2022 as we saw in 2021, and we’re so happy that more and more families are able to travel this year!

#1 travel destination in the u.s. 2022

Here are the top 10 destinations we are seeing already booked for summer this year, in order of popularity:

As more people begin to feel comfortable traveling further distances, and popular tourist areas continue to lift restrictions, Hawaii has returned to it’s #1 spot on our summer destination list.

2. South Carolina

South Carolina was RedWeek’s #1 destination for summer 2021—surpassing even Hawaii—but this year has slid down to #2. This is a popular destination for east coasters within driving distance, but is also such a beautiful area that it draws crowds from all over the country.

3. California

A forever favorite among warm weather lovers, California remains one of our most popular summer destinations this year. One of the top coastal resorts continues to be Marriott’s Newport Coast Villas .

4. Caribbean

Though the Caribbean is always in our Top 25 list for the whole length of the year, it tends to take a backseat to California and Hawaii during the summer month. It is still a crowd pleaser this year, though, coming in at #4.

Another destination that travelers flock to during the colder months, Florida is also a trending spot this summer as people get back into the swing of things and return to popular areas.

After a slight dip in popularity throughout the pandemic recovery, Mexico seems to be gaining traction among travelers again in 2022, as it climbed up a spot this summer. As restrictions ease in these tourist-saturated areas, travel increases as well.

7. Virginia

Another popular destination for east coasters who are looking for a relaxing road trip vacation, Virginia remains a summer favorite among RedWeek renters.

8. Massachusetts

A dream vacation for history buffs and lovers of old-town charm, Massachusetts offers fun for the whole family—as well as a lush scenic backdrop for summer recreation.

The under-dog of summer destinations this year is definitely Nevada . A state that didn’t even make the top 10 summer list in 2021 managed to surpass three states this yea— bumping both Colorado and Texas off the list entirely.

10. Missouri

Though Nevada beat this beloved state by one slot this year, Missouri is still a favorite summer destination among many families in 2022.

Haven’t started planning your summer vacation yet? Don’t worry, we still have plenty of rentals for you to choose from!

The buzziest summer travel destinations for 2024, according to Google

Jordan Waller

Looking for inspiration for your next big summer vacation? Or, perhaps you're in search of some suggestions for an exciting city break? Whether you're looking for far-flung travel suggestions in Europe or Asia or something closer to home on U.S. soil, we have you covered.

We might only be just into spring, but now is the time to start planning and booking your 2024 summer vacations if you don't want to risk hotels and flights selling out. But with so many incredible destinations out there, it's not always easy to decide where you should fly.

Thankfully, Google Flights has just released its list of the top destinations for summer 2024. The list is compiled based on the most searched-for destinations by travelers within the U.S. on Google Flights for travel anytime between June 1 and Aug. 31.

This year's list is chock-full of some of the busiest and trendiest destinations among U.S. travelers. While it features a bunch of the usual suspects (we're looking at you, Paris), there are also a few surprises in it.

In third place, however, comes our first surprise in the form of Tokyo , which has risen from the eighth position. Both Madrid and San Juan have also broken into the top 20 for the first time in positions 18 and 20, respectively.

Plenty of popular U.S. destinations like New York, Miami, Seattle and Boston made the list. This year has seen both Chicago and San Francisco drop out of the top rankings.

In terms of the top family travel destinations , Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, all ranked highly. Turks and Caicos, in particular, was shown to also be the most popular destination for couples and the fourth most popular spot for solo travelers .

The Fit Guy’s Guide to a Disney World Vacation

IT DIDN'T REALLY hit me until our last day at the Magic Kingdom. My two-year-old daughter was scaling the 116 steps of the Swiss Family Treehouse for the second time. I watched her legs—once the doughy consistency of a Mickey Mouse waffle , now corded like the ropes of the treetop walkway. My daughter is strong, I thought.

I would’ve realized this sooner, but visiting four Walt Disney World Resort parks in three days—plus hopping on shuttles, speed-walking to dinner reservations, and enjoying so much pool time—hadn’t given me much space to think.

After that second tree-house run, despite my daughter’s squeals of “Do again!” we met up with my wife and five-year-old son , fresh off Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. I saw it in them, too. We were hot and sweaty and overstimulated, yes, but ready for more.

In 2022, nearly 50 million people visited one of the Disney theme parks in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, according to the Themed Entertainment Association . That’s more visitors than at the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Yosemite combined .

Disney World is no longer just a vacation. It is a family rite of passage—which can lead to pressure to “get the most out of your trip,” something you’ll hear from friends, family, and Disney-fluencers. That often means stretching your dollar , avoiding the crowds, and securing breakfast with Cinderella.

When I began planning our trip, I had another concern: Could my family hang? We’re active, but the parks are huge, the lines are long, and Dole Whips beckon everywhere. So I contacted experts who are not only at the top of their fields but had also recently visited Disney World. They equipped us with a training plan, gear suggestions, and an overall strategy to help us maximize fun and minimize stress.

Do you need to train for Disney? Of course not.

But does attaining a baseline of fitness unlock a higher level of possibility? Consider what Jeff Galloway , the longtime official training consultant for runDisney marathons , told me: “The Disney experience can be absolutely wonderful for adults and kids... but with the right training, it can be even happier.”

And with my fit family’s Disney experience as an n=1, you can do as we did and not just “get the most out of” Disney but conquer it.

JUMP TO: 1. Training | 2. The Hotel | 3. Food & Drinks | 4. The Gear | 5. The Schedule | 6. The Comedown

I AMASSED 57,393 steps during our three park days. (My kids got way more.) I pushed a double stroller with and without 75 pounds worth of kids inside. I carried a diaper bag and sometimes a writhing child. Yet the pre-trip fitness prep plan Jeff Galloway of runDisney made for us worked . In 11 weeks, he has parents ramp up their daily step counts, while kids build mileage via walks. Here’s what the first two weeks entail.

  • TUESDAY AND THURSDAY: 3,000 to 5,000 total steps for parents; quarter-mile walk for kids
  • SATURDAY AND/OR SUNDAY: 7,000 total steps for whole family (stroller and backpacks for parents encouraged)

TUESDAY AND THURSDAY: 4,000 to 6,000 total steps for parents; half-mile walk for kids

  • SATURDAY AND/OR SUNDAY: 10,000 total steps for whole family (stroller and backpacks for parents encouraged)

Want the rest of the plan? Click here .

The Mental Training

Gabriel R. Garza, M.D. , a child psychiatrist for Ascension health care in Austin, Texas, gave me the idea include mental preparation in our Disney training walks. “For small kids, in addition to talking about what you might see at the parks, you’ll want to orient them to what else they’ll experience around the trip,” he says.

So we talked about the airport, the airplane, the hotel, the pools , the lines, the heat, the not getting to do everything we want (because it’s just not humanely possibly) and coming home. It helped—and gave us a way to pass the time during our walks and hikes .

YOU DON'T NEED a hotel with a gym. What you really want is a room with a kitchen option so you can cook and eat there, says Charlie Weingroff, D.P.T., C.S.C.S. , a Florida-based physical therapist who has been to Disney World more than 50 times. Proximity to the parks is nice. Routes for a walk are, too. The hotels below have all the above. The rest, really, is about cost and just how much additional Disney! you can handle.

If you don’t have a rental car to pick up groceries , you can also Instacart them to your room. Here’s what worked best for us at the hotel, focusing on protein and fiber from real food to help us stay full and regular (an unsung vacation essential).

  • BREAKFAST: Microwave ¼ cup quick-cooking oats with ½ cup water. Stir in 1 heaping spoonful of peanut butter and defrosted mixed berries. Top with cinnamon, if you want.
  • LUNCH/DINNER: Between two slices of whole-wheat bread, pile pulled pieces of a rotisserie chicken, layer on a slice of Cheddar, sandwich-cut pickles , and mustard or mayo. Serve with tons of fruit on the side.

Strawberries, blueberries, cubed watermelon, more pickles, more rotisserie chicken pieces, string cheese, and electrolyte drink mixes stirred into water for hydration are all great options to keep the whole family full and hydrated.

Disney lets you bring in your own food, so load up. Figure 200 calories for kids (400 for adults) every hour you’ll be at the park. Two expert-backed solid options:

“Sliced apples and grapes are clutch, as they’re easy to pack, sweet, and a good source of fiber.” — Darrell M. Gray II, M.D ., gastroenterologist and cofounder, Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists

“My kids were fans of Uncrustables. Great? Nope. Better than many other options? For sure.” — Brian St. Pierre, R.D., director, Precision Nutrition, and MH nutrition advisor

For hydration, know this: “Even with a train-up, once at Disney, watch out for heat,” says Jedidiah Ballard, D.O., an ER doctor and MH emergency-medicine advisor. Bring big bottles; refill at the parks’ many fountains. A family water jug, stored beneath a stroller, is also smart for on-the-spot refills.

BEYOND THE SUNGLASSES , water bottles , and obligatory Goofy hat, you’re going to need a few key pieces of equipment.

EXPERTS LARGELY AGREE: If you jam-pack your itinerary, especially on day one, you’ll totally exhaust yourself. There’s a calmer, gentler, and ultimately better way.

  • 6 A.M. Or whenever makes sense to wake up, eat breakfast, pack up, and get to a park before it opens.
  • 9 A.M. Target must-experience rides* early, stopping frequently for snacks and water.
  • 11 A.M. Lunch—early, yes, but you beat the rush, and it works with your start time.
  • 1 P.M . Huddle to see if you want to do one or two more rides or head back for pool time/rest/unwinding.
  • 4 P.M. Rehuddle to see if you can handle a second park. (The fitter you all are, the greater the chances!)

*Disney now offers individual Lightning Lane (for two rides daily, price varies) and Genie+ (one ride at a time, all day, $25 and up a person). My wife, who self-identifies as Type A, liked the control offered by both options. I’m more go-with-the-flow and prefer to meander throughout the park without staring at my phone. We did Genie+ for one day, as a compromise.

IT'S REAL. “Give your family a day or two to rest before jumping back into the normal schedule,”says Gabriel Garza, M.D., a child psychiatrist and assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The U.S. State Department has issued a security warning , urging people to “reconsider travel” to Jamaica after 65 people were murdered in one month.

According to the State Department , the most recent “reconsider travel” warning comes due to high crime and lack of medical services.

The crimes have become so prevalent that even people staying at all-inclusive resorts are not safe.

“Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts,” the warning from the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica stated.

“Local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. When arrests are made, cases are infrequently prosecuted to a conclusive sentence,” the embassy’s warning continued.

The amount of murders in Jamaica has caused the island nation to have one of the highest homicide rates in the Western Hemisphere.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force , at least 65 people were killed from Jan. 1-27, 2024.

Jamaica is not the only island nation U.S. officials have issued warnings to tourists about the lack of safety in the region.

The U.S. State Department issued a warning to tourists traveling to The Bahamas, advising them to “exercise increased caution” due to crime.
