Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson tours to mark 40 years of Breakfast in America
“What a city,” Supertramp co-founder Roger Hodgson says, fondly recalling his visit to Perth six years ago on a solo tour.
“I’ve been there once but, blimey, it was such a unique place. I really wanted to stay and peek underneath the surface. It was great.”
Supertramp’s only tour of Australia in 1976 skipped WA, not that it would have mattered for Hodgson, who remembers virtually nothing of that visit.
“I’ve got to be honest,” the 68-year-old Brit says from his adopted home in northern California. “Very little.”

While Hodgson left the English progressive rock giants in 1983 and moved his young family away from the Los Angeles music scene, he has spent the past two decades playing Supertramp hits under his own name.
The father-of-two returns to Australia in February on a tour that will coincide with the 40th anniversary of his band’s sixth and biggest selling album, Breakfast in America.
Hodgson wrote five songs, including The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home and the title track, on the 1979 classic, which remains the perfect postcard of Supertramp’s love of symphonic Beatles-inspired pop with lashings of Wurlitzer electric piano, clavinets, clarinets and other instruments rarely found in the rock arsenal.
“I’m still singing the songs I wrote from the album,” he says, “and I never get tired of them. It did capture an amazing spirit and really has stood the test of time very well. I sing these songs 80, 90 times a year and I’m still loving them to death.”
Breakfast in America is testament to the time and energy Supertramp, and especially Hodgson, put into making the album for eight intense months in 1978.
The multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and arranger spent the final few weeks sleeping in Studio B of the Village Recorder in west LA.
I sing these songs 80, 90 times a year and I’m still loving them to death. Roger Hodgson
“I couldn’t let it go,” Hodgson says. “I’m like that. I knew it was a fantastic collection of songs. I felt it would do well, but I did not realise it would do quite as well as it did.”
Breakfast in America topped charts around the world, including Australia where it was the highest selling album of 1979. The album spawned four hit singles, including Goodbye Stranger sung by co-founder Rick Davies, and sold 4 million copies in the US alone.
“I think all that care and passion paid off because the songs really have stood up through the years,” Hodgson says. “If the balance between the instruments was wrong the whole feel of the songs wouldn’t work. Only I knew how it needed to be.”
The late 70s were a fertile period for the prolific Hodgson, whose wife Karuna was pregnant with their first child while Breakfast in America was gestating.
“We had a motorhome, a trailer, so I pulled that down to the studio and parked it outside,” he recalls.
“(My wife) was outside the studio while I was working. I’m not sure if I slept in the studio or just went out to the motorhome and slept, then went back to the studio in the morning. It was pretty manic.”
Hodgson drove that motorhome across the US on Supertramp’s 1979 tour. His daughter Heidi was born in the vehicle moments before the band were due to go on stage in San Diego.
“It was an exciting time,” Hodgson says. “There was a lot going on back then.”
The softly spoken Englishman says he still talks to Davies, 74, who has battled cancer since being diagnosed in 2015 on the eve of a Supertramp tour (without Hodgson).
“He’s been very sick, so we have been in touch,” Hodgson says. “There’s a very strong bond there because of what we went through and what we created, so that’ll always be there.”
But, there’s no chance of a reunion.
“I really don’t see that happening, no. I think that boat has sailed,” he says. “I’m not averse to that but Rick is not particularly well and I think his touring days are over.”
Besides, Hodgson’s solo tours are going gangbusters — his well-drilled five-piece band are due to play five nights at L’Olympia in Paris and two at London’s Royal Albert Hall this year.
He loves seeing generations of fans singing along to The Logical Song or Supertramp’s other hits, such as Give a Little Bit, Dreamer or It’s Raining Again.
“I don’t know about you but I never went to a concert with my dad,” Hodgson laughs. “It’s amazing to have made music that brings entire families together.”
I think all that care and passion paid off because the songs really have stood up through the years. Roger Hodgson
After leaving the UK more than 40 years ago, Hodgson says he misses the English sense of humour but he still prefers his breakfast in America.
“I landed in California at age 24 and I just fell in love with it — the spirit, the people, the openness, the weather, the space, the progressive thinking, the healthy food...
“Coming from England, it was like landing on a different planet. It was exactly what I needed to redefine myself.”
Roger Hodgson plays the Riverside Theatre on February 4. Tickets from Ticketek.

I've known and followed Supertramp from the first album, clearly everything changed after songwriter Roger Hodgson left the band in 1983. The dynamics of the band completely changed; Supertramp in their prime had 5 members... now 10 members this year. Not the Supertramp I saw in the 70s, there just isn't the same chemistry and it is difficult and uncomfortable sitting through other musicians performing Roger's songs just to hear a handful of Rick's songs. Then seeing Roger at the Royal Albert Hall in 2013 re-ignited the feelings and immersive aural experience I once had seeing Tramp in '75 & '79. Roger was a tour de force, nailed the harmonies and a set filled with both classic faves and deep track highlights, it had more depth and authenticity of the Supertramp I once knew. Didn't hesitate to book when I discovered Roger's returning to Albert Hall, I know from the start it will be a more fulfilling show and wouldn't chance another disappointment seeing "Supertramp".

Supertramp, the iconic London rock group who achieved great success in the 70's and 80's are still touring to their legions of devoted fans globally. Packed into the spanning O2 Arena, the audience is a combination of those original fans who are well into their 70s along with those who simply enjoy the band's legacy and style.
As the bombastic guitar riffs begin and the flared lighting illuminates the entire arena the crowd roar in excitement. The veteran rockers launch themselves onto the stage like a band half their age, the singalongs to 'Breakfast in America' and 'Gone Hollywood' are deafening as Roger Hodgson evokes even louder cheers from the baying crowds.
The band were such an important influence on progressive rock and so many of their albums have affected modern music. Therefore the choice in setlist is questionable, yet all the hits are there and the audience cheer for 'Goodbye Stranger' and 'It's Raining Again'. The band leaves their fans with sore throats, tired legs and happy hearts.
I saw both Supertramp and the band's co-founder, Roger Hodgson, on their respective tours in 2010. I can honestly say there is no comparison and I have made it a point to see Roger live several times since. While Rick has some great songs of his own, there is nothing better than seeing Roger singing the songs he wrote - Give a Little Bit, Breakfast in America, The Logical Song, Take the Long Way Home, Dreamer, Fool's Overture, It's Raining Again, School, and so many more. His voice is so unique that absolutely no one else can do his songs justice. It is Roger Hodgson who truly gives me the essence and spirit of Supertramp. I can't wait to see him again this year on his Breakfast in America World Tour.

Supertramp frontman roger hodgson is coming to australia.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Supertramp’s 1979 album Breakfast In America, frontman of the legendary rock outfit Roger Hodgson is heading on an Australian tour.
In addition to his career fronting Supertramp, Hodgson has found success as a solo artist and collaborated with the likes of Ringo Starr in his All Starr Band. As the lead songwriter for Supertramp, Hodgson is to thank for many of the band’s hits, including ‘The Logical Song’ and ‘Take The Long Way Home’ and, of course, ‘Breakfast In America’.
Hodgson will head to Australia next year where he will play three shows, displaying his expansive catalogue and talent, in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. You can expect to hear all your favourite tracks from Breakfast In America , too. Get in quick, this one will definitely sell out.

Concert Reviews
"This concert turns into a time travel through more than 40 years of music history in two hours. The audience enjoyed the great performance just as much as Roger Hodgson and his band did. That could be sensed everywhere."

“ Tonight’s show reinforces the sheer volume of Roger’s back catalogue, as he performs a large number of his Supertramp contributions plus a sprinkling of his later solo works, and the most telling fact here is that, even though it is only his half of the Supertramp catalogue that he perform, if this were a Supertramp show, the setlist would feel satisfactorily complete." Steve Pilkington - Classic Rock Society Magazine
“It is a night with a perfect host. Graceful, showing genuine interest in his guests, radiating fine humour – that's how Roger Hodgson entertains his audience. Hodgson celebrates his music, plays the keyboards, piano and guitar. The “Voice of Supertramp” with his vital tenor, which climbs the heights effortlessly, is supported by excellent musicians." Regina Tauer - Mittelhessen.de Full Article
“He is a consummate musician that takes his craft seriously. Every aspect of his performance was flawless.” Jeb Wright - Classic Rock Revisited

Roger Hodgson wrote and composed the songs listed above on the Breakfast in America Album. Though all the above songs that Roger recorded with Supertramp were credited equally Hodgson/Davies, that does not reflect how it really was. Roger actually wrote his songs while he was alone and many of his biggest hits were songs he had written before he met Rick and co-founded the band. Roger and Rick actually wrote separately, though they continued to share writer's credit. Of course, it would have been Roger's preference if he'd had better advice and had all the songs he wrote in just his name and the ones Rick wrote just in Rick's name so there would not be so much confusion about the difference in artistic, lyrical and musical styles of each songwriter and composer.
Classics Live Review
For most of my life, I've loudly and proudly identified myself as a Supertramp fan. All these years later, I listen with awe to the altogether stunning new Classics Live album only to discover that I am, in fact, first and foremost, a major Roger Hodgson fan. His is the voice that spoke to me as a young man, and speaks to me even more powerfully all these years later. An utterly inspired collection of live performances of the best-loved songs that Roger Hodgson has written and sung to date, Classics Live reminds us in the most vivid way who brought the world such beloved rock standards as "Give A Little Bit," "Take The Long Way Home," "The Logical Song" and "Dreamer," and why these shining songs endure as deeply personal yet somehow universal expression of longing, love and our endless search for human connection. Hodgson's performances on Classics Live were recorded in various venues around the world -- from France to Brazil to Germany to Venezuela. Some of the performances here are acoustic, some with a small rock band; others find Hodgson backed by an orchestra too, and yet the entire album holds together as the deeply felt song cycle of a lifetime from an artist who for too long has been too humble to lay claim to his own remarkable musical legacy. Roger Hodgson may have taken the long way home, but with Classics Live he's back and he has never sounded better.
DAVID WILD Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone
Open the Door is a brilliant solo album by Roger with his same magic touch for melody, catchy hooks, and powerful, dramatic rock that made his work with Supertramp so special. Great songs from end to end. Hodgson's classic falsetto voice remains in pristine condition, his playing & songwriting simply wonderful. Open The Door is a must-buy CD for the Roger Hodgson/Supertramp faithful. Here’s a few songs from this Album to listen too above.

DVD Reviews
Normally I'm not a fan of live albums or DVDs. However, when this singer/songwriter from one of my favorite 70s bands, Supertramp, released this DVD featuring his concert recorded in Montreal in '06, I knew it wouldn't be anything less than stellar. I wasn't disappointed!
Unlike most singers from our musical past, Roger's voice seems to have only blossomed and improved with time. He gives 150% of himself, resulting in a sweet, soaring vocal performance.
Beautifully produced, the audio and visuals are a treat for the senses.
It's a feel-good concert that will leave you smiling (and in my case, cheering!).
"The whole audience went several times into standing ovations as he sang and played as a "One Man Orchestra" either a "12 Strings Guitar", A Piano, An Electronic Keyboard or The Harmonica. This DVD is a GEM as the stage production including lights and sound as well as the quality of the Video (near HD) are excellent."
“I currently have a badly broken leg, so about once a day I put in my hand-signed DVD and watch the concert from Montreal. Roger has such a positive attitude it makes me want to get up and dance! Roger Hodgson: rock on!” VK
You can get your autographed Montreal DVD now at the Roger Hodgson Store

Tourists stunned after getting $100 bill for two hamburgers, fries and a soda at swiss hotel.
Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.
Two Australian travelers were left “absolutely shocked” when they realized they had forked out a whopping $100 for two burgers and fries, and one soda, at their hotel in Europe.
“We thought they made a mistake,” Maria Antoniou told news.com.au.
Maria and her partner Anthony were staying in Grindelwald, a village in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps.
Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world, but is popular among travelers for its incredible natural beauty.
The couple knew it was going to be a costly spot to visit from their research, but Maria says “Actually experiencing the prices was next level.”
“We didn’t really shop in Switzerland so I can’t speak on that, but all the food was excessive in price,” she said.
“If I was in Australia and got told two burgers were $150 [$98.47USD] I would have walked out.”
Maria explained the crazy prices were not just isolated to their hotel.
“We found the street food to be a similar price, unless you were buying from the grocer — which many people were,” she said.
Maria and Anthony, who travelled for four months, said Grindelwald, Switzerland was definitely the most expensive destination they visited, followed by Santorini, Greece – another tourist hotspot.

The couple, who have created a series of travel guides for other Aussies, said despite the pricey food, Switzerland deserves a spot on people’s travel lists.
“One of the most beautiful countries we’ve ever visited,” Maria said. “No photo or video will ever do Switzerland justice. My partner and I can’t wait to go back. Just make sure you save, save, save.”
When Maria shared her experience on her TikTok account – @mariaantoniouu21 – other Aussies agreed they too were stunned at how much food cost when visiting Switzerland.
“We got three large meals from Burger King and it was 210 Australian dollars,” said one woman who had visited Interlaken, a popular Swiss resort town.
“Big Mac meal cost me $35 [Australian, $23 USD] in Zurich,” said another who ate at McDonald’s in Switzerland’s largest city.
“I paid $15 [$10 USD] for a cup of noodles from my hostel gift shop,” shared a traveler on a budget.

A travel company and a Melbourne private school have been charged over the death of a student who became unwell on a school trip.
The Kilvington grammar school student, Lachlan Cook, 16, suffered diabetes complications during a trip to Vietnam in September 2019 and later died in hospital in Melbourne.
His death was found to have been preventable by a coroner in 2023.
A court previously heard the boy had been self-managing his type 1 diabetes when he fell ill and was taken to hospital 24 hours after first showing symptoms. He suffered a heart attack and was flown back to the Royal Children’s hospital in Melbourne, with his life support switched off in October 2019.

On Wednesday, WorkSafe said it has charged the school and the travel company, World Challenge Expeditions Pty Ltd.
World Travel Expeditions has been charged with three counts of failing to ensure that persons other than employees were not exposed to health and safety risks under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The regulator alleges the company failed, so far as was reasonably practicable, to reduce the risk of illness or death to participating students, including those with diabetes.
The school is also facing one charge of failing to ensure that persons other than employees were not exposed to health and safety risks, WorkSafe said.

The case is due to be heard in the Melbourne magistrates court on 30 April.

Taylor Swift has officially reached Forbes billionaire status.
“The most famous newcomer is, of course, Taylor Swift, whose record-breaking, five-continent Eras Tour is the first to surpass $1 billion in revenue,” the business magazine explained in a new article, highlighting celebrities who made their annual list.
“The 34-year-old pop star amassed an estimated $1.1 billion ($1.69 billion AUD) fortune, based on earnings from the blockbuster tour, the value of her music catalogue and her real estate portfolio.”
According to Forbes, Swift is also the “first musician to hit ten-figure status” solely based on her songs and performances.
Other celebrities who made the annual list include NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson and French fashion designer Christian Louboutin.
Swift’s Eras Tour, which kicked off in March 2023, was the highest-selling tour worldwide.
The announcement of her billionaire status comes just one day after the Grammy winner took home the prestigious artist of the year award at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Swift could not attend the Los Angeles-based awards show in person, but thanked fans for their support in a prerecorded video that played on the big screen at the Dolby Theatre.
“To the fans, it’s completely up to you to choose how you spend your time,” the Bad Blood singer said.
“What concerts you want to go to, what music do you want to make the soundtrack to your life, and to anyone who has included me in those choices, I’m so, so, so thankful for that.”
The Love Story singer recently returned home from a romantic vacation in the Bahamas with her NFL star beau, Travis Kelce.
More Coverage
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, also 34, has attended many of Swift’s shows over the past year. He even jetted off to Australia right after his 2024 Super Bowl win to support his pop star girlfriend. The Eras Tour is set to end in December 2024 in Vancouver, Canada.
Up next, Swift’s 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, drops April 19.

Stranded cruise passengers in africa race to rejoin their ship.
Eight cruise passengers left behind in the African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe have been struggling for days to catch up with their Norwegian Cruise Line ship as it makes its way up the western coast of Africa.
The passengers were late getting back to the ship on March 27, according to a statement from Norwegian Cruise Line.
“Eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time,” the statement said.
“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.”
Norwegian Cruise Line said that the passengers’ passports were handed over to local port agents for the guests to collect. The cruise line said that since the guests were on a private tour and missed the specified time, they are responsible for the cost of getting to the next available port of call to rejoin the ship. The cruise line said it was working with local authorities and communicating with the stranded passengers.
According to stranded South Carolina couple Jill and Jay Campbell, who have been in contact with CNN affiliate WPDE about their situation, a group of eight stranded passengers spent 15 hours traveling through six countries to try to rejoin their ship on Sunday in Gambia.
But the ship was unable to dock that day “due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage,” the cruise line said.
The Campbells told WPDE that the group would next try to get to Senegal, where the ship was scheduled to call into port on Tuesday.
The cruise line said it contacted the group about the itinerary adjustment and provided authorization for them to join the ship in Senegal, and will reimburse the guests for travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal.
The Campbells boarded the ship on March 20. The website CruiseMapper.com shows that the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn had arrived early Tuesday at port in Dakar, Senegal.
The Campbells told WPDE that several members of the group are elderly, another is a paraplegic and one woman is pregnant. They said one member of the group has been without his heart medication for five days and had become ill.
A missed all-aboard time
The group’s mad dash started after a tour on São Tomé and Príncipe ran long on March 27.
“We were like, ‘Our time is getting really short,’ and they were like, ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,’” Jay Campbell said of the tour organizers. Campbell told WPDE that the tour operator contacted the captain to say that the passengers were on their way but would be late. The ship was still in port when they got back, but Campbell said that the captain would not let them on board.
“The harbor master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call,” Campbell told WPDE late last week. “We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number, they said ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails.”
The Campbells told WPDE the group was left without their medications and that most passengers didn’t have credit cards that were accepted on São Tomé and Príncipe, so the Campbells spent thousands of dollars on their Visa card for lodging and essentials for the group.
The Campbells said one additional passenger who was not on their tour had a medical emergency and was hospitalized on São Tomé, leaving her stranded as well. The Campbells said they were able to get in touch with that passenger’s daughter back in California to help coordinate her return to North America.
The cruise line later told CNN that the passenger was medically disembarked after being evaluated by the ship’s medical team for “further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital.”
“We attempted to call the guest several times, and as we were unable to reach her, we worked directly with our port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, to receive updates about the guest,” Norwegian Cruise Line said.
The passenger’s daughter, who spoke with WPDE , disputes the cruise line’s account of how her mother’s situation unfolded.
CNN’s Sarah Dewberry contributed to this report.
