Review: Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas is an action-packed adventure on water

Those who longed for a vacation during the peak of COVID-19 wouldn’t be stranger to the concept of “cruise to nowhere”. After all, if we can’t fly or even drive to neighbouring countries, the next best option is going out to sea. So successful was this concept that it reinvigorated a newfound enthusiasm for cruising in Singapore, which is why the Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas cruise ship couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

The vessel, Asia’s largest and most innovative ship, made its first dock here recently to prepare for its one-year stint in Singapore starting 11 April 2022, and if our sneak peek was anything to go by, it’s going to be a busy 365 days for all 1,500 crew members on board.

Read on for our full review of Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas cruise in Singapore

The cruise ship.

royal caribbean spectrum of the seas singapore review

In today’s competitive cruise industry, Royal Caribbean International knew it had a lot to do to stand out from its competitors, namely Genting’s Dream Cruises. Thankfully, it had plenty of space to play around with; the hulking vessel is Asia’s biggest and most expensive cruise ship at the moment, and spans an impressive length of about 347m.

In fact, there are so many things to see and do, that the three- and four-night Ocean Getaways will probably not be enough for you to tick off your checklist. Because the ship is relatively new (it last did its rounds in Hong Kong before restrictions tightened further), expect everything to be clean and in top shape.

best cruise singapore review

Where do we even begin? Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas is chockfull of activities and facilities that will keep anyone completely occupied, whether you’re 10 years old or 100.

You’ll get access to signature experiences such as Ripcord by iFly, a gravity-defying simulator that lets you float weightlessly as you attempt skydiving manoeuvres — if you dare. An instructor is on hand to guide you through, and because it’s on one of the ship’s highest points, you’ll get a killer view to boot too.

For an even better view, book a session on the North Star, an all-glass observation capsule that’ll take you 300 feet above sea level for panoramic sights of the sea and beyond. We were told that a pod of dolphins were spotted near the vessel just a couple of days ago, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled whilst up there.

Other big highlights include the FlowRider surf simulator that’ll get your adrenaline pumping, as well as the SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity complex at sea. The latter is a transformable space that can not only host basketball and futsal matches, but also bumper car battles come sundown. Around the space are table tennis tables, foosball tables, and an archery area, which guests can use at any point in time.

best cruise singapore review

Those keen on getting some sun during this trip won’t be disappointed; a decent-sized pool sits at the heart of the Spectrum of the Sea’s top deck with plenty of sunbeds around, but if that gets too crowded for you, there’s another one in the air-conditioned Solarium and a jacuzzi in an adults-only section just further back for you to soak in. Bars are dotted everywhere so you won’t have to walk far for a piña colada — just sayin’ .

If you prefer to soak in the atmosphere of the ship, Spectrum of the Seas keeps you entertained with plenty of live performance options. The Two70 is an open area “living room” by day that offers panoramic views of the waters and neighbouring islands, but come sundown, the space transforms with the help of intelligent robotic lighting, state-of-the art projectors, and very enthusiastic performers. Expect lots of dancing, live singing, and even contortionists to keep you entertained. Other venues on the cruise ship also offer live bands and pianists. If you want to channel your inner God of Gambling, the casino, of course, awaits.

best cruise singapore review

Because Royal Caribbean International designed this ship for the Asian market, expect Asian cuisine to be a big theme around there. Highlights include restaurants such as Sichuan Red, Hot Pot, and Teppanyaki, the latter of which is the most entertaining option of them all. Here, the passionate chefs cook up a storm on the hot plate whilst singing and teasing guests, so bookmark this restaurant if you want a meal to remember.

best cruise singapore review

For your caffeine fix, head to the contemporary Leaf & Bean, where you’ll find everything from original Chinese teas to classic coffee creations, then head to the Bionic Bar to watch robots shake up a cocktail for you. There’s a Jamie’s Italian by Jamie Oliver if you’re craving pasta, but head to Wonderland if you’re feeling adventurous. The multi-sensory experience here is bolstered by a whimsical setting, visually-enticing dishes, and ‘magical’ cocktails to make for a highly entertaining and Instagrammable meal.

royal caribbean spectrum of the seas dining

Otherwise, there are also free dining options everywhere. The Windjammer offers a massive buffet spread three times a day, while the Dog House and Sorrento’s Pizza let’s you binge on hot dogs and pizzas to your heart’s content. The Main Dining Room is a smart-casual affair, and serves up decadent dishes like Moroccan-spiced ahi tuna and fluffy Grand Marnier soufflés.

For the best experience, we recommend booking the Silver Junior Suite and up. The suite life onboard Spectrum of the Seas not only means a bigger room, but also generous balcony space (with sunbeds!), and access to exclusive dining lounges and facilities throughout the ship.

Here, the rooms are contemporary and impeccably clean, with a plush king-sized bed that will tempt you to hit the snooze button time and again. The room opens up to the balcony via floor-to-ceiling sliding doors so you can let the fresh sea breeze in. You’ll also enjoy creature comforts like L’Occitane toiletries, a bathtub, a Lavazza coffee machine.

If you’re travelling with a big family and demanding kids, the Ultimate Family Suite is a two-storey option that boasts an in-suite slide, a flights of piano stairs, your very own cinema, an air hockey table, and table tennis on your balcony. A Royal Genie will be your personal butler for the trip, and you can count on him to give you exclusive access to the best that Royal Caribbean has to offer on your Spectrum of the Seas cruise.

royal caribbean spectrum of the seas

With air travel opening up rapidly, the biggest question that remains now is whether a cruise to nowhere from Singapore is still the best option around. While we’re all for exploring new destinations, Royal Caribbean’s Spectrum of the Seas was a surprisingly delightful distraction from the rest of the world for a few days.

Like a little city on the seas, the smooth-sailing cruise left us with no time to be bored (or hungry). Service is outstanding here, and you won’t find a crew member without a smile. Walk past any of them and you’ll get a greeting, and if you have a request, they’ll go out of their way to help you — something you don’t always experience on land (or even in the skies).

royal caribbean spectrum of the seas review

Royal Caribbean International’s new ship might still be cruising with no ports of call for now, but the Singapore Tourism Board has stated that it was working with potential destinations to make this happen by year end. And while that would be one extra thing to look forward to, you’ll be having so much fun that you might not even want to leave.

However, certain times of the year are considered the best for a cruise tour in Singapore, depending on your preferences and budget. In this article, we'll look at the best time for a cruise tour in Singapore.

The peak travel season for Singapore cruise tours is from December to February. The weather is relatively cool and dry, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities and sightseeing. However, prices for flights, accommodations, and activities are generally higher during this time, and popular destinations such as Thailand and Malaysia can be crowded with tourists.

If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, consider traveling during the shoulder season, from March to May or September to November. During these times, you can enjoy lower prices for flights and accommodations, and the weather is generally mild and pleasant. However, you may encounter occasional rain showers during these periods, so it's a good idea to pack for various weather conditions.

For those looking to avoid crowds, the best time for a cruise tour in Singapore is from June to August, which is the low season. During this period, prices for flights, accommodations, and activities are at their lowest, and you can enjoy a more relaxed and uncrowded experience. However, you should be prepared for hot and humid weather conditions, which can be uncomfortable for some. It's worth noting that Singapore is a year-round destination for cruise tours, and each season has its unique attractions and activities. Singapore: Everything about the 40-minute SG River Cruise

Riverside point clarke quay. singapore river cruise review

Singapore River Cruise review: When I hear Singapore, there are always Marina Bay Sands in the backdrop, the lotus-shaped Art Science Museum, and the dreamy skyline. While there are a thousand things to see , I’ve always wondered what the boats circling the river felt like – and I finally got on one!

When I was younger, I visited the Singapore Zoo , Sentosa, and even Jurong Bird Park (now called the Bird Paradise Park) but never the boat cruise. My parents thought it would be ‘boring’. Looking back now, I guess they were right and wrong. After all, it’s simply a slow riverboat ride.

However, I loved it when I took the ride by myself – it opens up another perspective to look at of the city. With the tickets at a dear price, I’d to put this Singapore River Cruise review out.

Best time to Visit SG River Cruise

The river cruise timings are 10 am to 9 pm on the weekends while it starts at 1 pm on the weekdays. The weekends – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday can be crowded but any weekday is fine to avoid the wait. More people tend to visit in the evenings to get a night view of the city.

Thus, the best time for the Singapore river cruise depends on you. Either way, the landscape makes it all worth it be it day or night. Singapore’s attractions are bound to be amazing everywhere. My priority was avoiding waiting anywhere I went, so I went for the afternoon cruise. When I got there, I realized I was too early on a weekday (around 11:30 am).

That gave me enough time to have a subway at Clarke Quay Central for lunch and take a few shots of the river and the colorful shop buildings and pathways. Getting on one of the first river cruise trips of the day, the boat was half empty and was a comfortable ride throughout.

Singapore River Cruise Review: Ticket Price

On the Clarke Quay river cruise stand, the on-spot tickets here are a flat S$26 for adults and S$17 for children. I tried my luck asking if there was a student concession like they had for the SG National Gallery . But they didn’t.

Anyhow, I bought the ticket and was told to wait until the boat arrived at the dock. It costs the same via the offline counter or any website. Yet I’d recommend getting your tickets for the river cruise on Klook.com.

Klook, being a big and reliable travel site (especially in Singapore), it’s useful to get discounts when you book multiple attractions across Singapore.

For travelers like me, another great option is to get the Klook Pass which includes a list of attractions in SG that the ticket is applicable. You have the option to choose the number of attraction passes and get a bundle of SG attractions tickets for lesser.

SG River Cruise vs River Cruise by Water B

The 40-minute river cruise is a round-trip ride that drops you back at the start point. In case you didn’t know, there are two cruise operators. The popular one is at Clarke Quay (the dark brown boats) and the other point begins from ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands (the modern red and green ones).

Singapore River Cruise vs River Cruise by Water B: Both rides traverse through the same river routes and don’t differ much. They even have similar pricing and both have indoor and outdoor seating.

Here are the updated pricing difference between Clarke Quay and Water B Cruises as of today on Klook.com. They aren’t that different, it comes down to your preference. Grab your ticket on Klook.com today!

But I recommend the Singapore river cruise operator (the one I went in) as it’s a traditional bumboat with its wooden interiors and low ceilings giving off a more rustic experience.

How to Get to SG River Cruise Point?

With Clarke Quay being famous for being a historical riverside quay and nightlife venue, there are many ways to get here. The closest MRT stations here are Fort Canning (Downtown line), and Clarke Quay (Northeast line). The Fort Canning Station is to the river cruise while Clarke Quay station is on the other riverside.

I, however, got off at the Clarke Quay bus station on bus no.32 via nth Buona Vista Rd. as I’d to get there from the National Gallery of Singapore. Not knowing where to get my tickets, I glanced at the Water B Fort Canning stand and ended up there at first looking stupid.

But someone helped me out to the right spot. Here’s the exact spot from Google Maps. The cruise ticket booth is right beside Hooters – you’ll know when you get there ;)

A Couple and Old People

Talking of the people that actually get on the boat – at least when I went, most of them were senior tourists. That’s what I loved most about SG. They cater to all sorts of tourists. There’s Sentosa , SG Zoo and River Wonders , and so on for kids, but they are a whole lot of things for old people as well (such as the Hippo bus). And River cruise is one of them.

Apart from the elderly, there was a couple on honeymoon along with a guide, and some solo travelers like myself. With the photogenic structures in the backdrop, the guide took a bunch of pictures of the couple.

singapore skyline river cruise

With around a dozen occupants, the boat was barely half-full and we all sat at the outdoor seating at the back. To our good luck, it wasn’t too sunny, making up for a peaceful ride.

Things to Spot on the SG River Cruise

The high-rising skyscrapers fascinated me so much, I missed taking pictures of historic structures here like the Old Hill Street Police Station. Keep in mind these structures and spot them on your bumboat ride!

Clarke Quay and Riverside Point

Quite obvious, isn’t it? You’ll begin at Clarke Quay. On one side are the colorful dine-in restaurants and on the other bank side has the Riverside Point shopping complex.

Boat Quay and its shophouses

Boat Quay, similar to Clarke Quay, is another line of Singapore’s live music restaurants, pubs, and nightlife venues. Even the shophouses are similar and show a world apart from the skyscrapers right opposite on the other riverside.

Asian Civilisations Museum

While not wholly visible, any local guide (if with you) will point out its noticeable historic build. While it stands as a museum today, it was previously a government building in the 1980s – known as the Empress Place Building.

Fullerton Hotel

The 5-star hotel today opened only 21 years ago . But the neo-classical structure’s construction started almost a century ago which began as a General Post Office Building in 1924. Its columns and decorative build itself is a breathtaking view from the SG river cruise.

Singapore Merlion!

After the Esplanade Bridge’s underpass is where the river widens, giving a grand welcome to Singapore’s skyline and Marina Bay with the official mascot – Singapore Merlion! I’d been on the shores by the Merlion over a decade ago and it felt nostalgic to see it again.

The Skyline

Following the SG Merlion is Singapore’s skyline and Marina Bay view. The cruise takes a slow circle around the skyscrapers, DBS towers, and Marina Bay Sands. It never gets dull to have a look at the buildings and the river cruise’s close proximity makes it even sweeter.

Marina Bay Sands and ArtScience Museum

Circling by the Marina Bay Sands , it’s majestic up close. I walked by the bay later on, so I gave it little attention. What caught my eye were the Sands Expo & Convention Center, and the Apple and Louis Vuitton stores in front of Marina Bay . These stores were on the water and looked distinguished.

Though not as big as the other structures, they were just retail stores after all – and huge ones hovering over the water by the bay.

Last but not least, is the theatres on the bay Esplanade. This is one of Singapore’s largest performing arts centers and a popular venue for live concerts. Most people call it the durian building for its shape though it wasn’t intended by its architects.

Tailpiece: Singapore River Cruise review

Coming to the end of my Singapore River Cruise review, I’d say I’ve learned a lot more while writing this review. The Singapore river passing through Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Marina Bay witnessed history and the nation’s achievements over the years.

Secretly, it also proudly smiles at how far the country has come with its growth and looks at the world-class architecture around it. The River Cruise recognizes this and made it possible for the world to see in one trip.

Instead of spending an entire day, to catch a glimpse of each historical landmark, this cruise takes a smooth sail within an hour. Or if you wish to walk through all the landmarks here, the river cruise can make a sweet end to your day by taking you through time once again.

Either way, that’s what makes the cruise worth paying for. That ends my post on the Singapore River Cruise review. Let me know what you think about it below :)

Cruising Experience with Genting Dream by Dream Cruises

Check out my experience on board with Genting Dream Cruise – what activities you can do, restaurants to try, and list of entertainments including shows and casino!

I did the cruising twice, one was 5D4N Singapore – Surabaya – North Bali – Singapore , the second one was 3D2N cruising from Singapore – Port Klang – Singapore .

When was the last time I did cruising, nearly 18 years ago!

Yep, I was still a little kid at that time.

I could only recall a few things, things that of course a kid would love – swimming pool, circus, and casino.

Wait, casino? How was a kid supposed to know about casino?

Easy, that’s where my parents would go right after me and my siblings fell asleep.

And now, 18 years later, I had a chance to be back on cruise again – this time with Genting Dream Cruise .

So, let’s jump in to my Genting Dream Cruise review!

Getting on Board with Genting Dream Cruise

Entering the port, I saw this big building on distance, and it wasn’t a building.

It’s the ship that I’m going to board, man it’s huge!

The port was busy, with guests from the cruise hopping down on shore to get souvenirs or just to stay on land.

While some other local audiences just hang around the port to marvel this big ship, something that can be rarely seen.

We cleared the registration ( make sure you bring your passport ) and headed up to the room.

I had a double room with a balcony outside . It’s bigger than I thought.

The bed was super comfy, seriously I had perfect sleep throughout the night.

There’s a sofa to lay down when I’m not wearing my pajamas, complete set of sandals and bathrobes, oh and I love their shower gel, smells good.

The little balcony is perfect to chill or to watch sunset.

I’m super ready to explore Genting Dream Cruise!

Eat while you can

One of a friend told me; before you start cruising, measure your weight and after you’re back home, you’ll be surprised!

Now I understand why.

There’s no way to not stuffing yourself with all these yummy food.

With restaurants serving high quality food, ranging from Asian to Western Cuisine, you’ll forget all your dietaries rule and, just feed yourself.

The inclusive restaurants in Genting Dream are Lido Restaurant and Dream Dining Room .

Lido Restaurant serves more varieties of food with buffet style while Dream Dining Room serves Chinese cuisine.

I had my breakfast normally in these restaurants.

The other restaurants that I also tried were the Hotpot, Bistro by Mark Best, Blue Lagoon, and Umi Uma .

blue lagoon restaurant genting dream cruise review

If I had to choose one of my favorite restaurants ,  I think I’ll go for Bistro by Mark Best and Umi Uma ( sorry, I can’t decide between these two ).

I think the food at the Bistro is just on another level for fine dining.

The tenderloin steak was soft and juicy with seasoning on point and the mouth-watering matcha mousse just melt when you take a spoon of it.

Thinking of it now makes me regret, why didn’t I order more food?

Tenderloin steak the Bistro Genting Dream

My other favorite restaurant in Genting Dream Cruise is Umi Uma Restaurant .

You can guess from its name that it’s a Japanese Restaurant, meaning that there’ll be sushi, sashimi, bento, udon ( I love them all!).

The highlight of this restaurant is the teppanyaki performance .

You’ll be sitting around a table with a chef cooking right on your face.

The chefs are very entertaining.

They pull off some fun attractive moves such as singing, juggling, like, spinning the eggs and throw them to the chef’s hat while cooking your food.

I really enjoy the interactions between the chefs and the guests, the atmosphere in the restaurant is full of excitement.

You definitely have to go to Umi Uma.

Other activities and entertainments in Genting Dream Cruise

Frankly, I was thinking what could I do inside the ship for such a long time.

But after all the experiences in Genting Dream Cruise, clearly there’s nothing to worry about.

There are so many things to do and you won’t get bored for sure.

Again, the ship is huge. Sometimes I still forgot the direction back to my room.

Let’s have a look what’s inside Genting Dream, shall we?

1. Zodiac Theater

Every night there will be show scheduled in Zodiac Theater.

With shimmering outfits and stage, the talented performers will stun you with their dancing skills and acrobatic movements.

Voyage of the Lovers Dream is a must to watch in Genting Dream Cruise.

The theatrical show will take you to a fantasy world of the unique love story between the mermaid and the astronaut.

Some dances can be powerful, some features remarkable ballet moves. For me it’s a night to remember.

entertainment in genting dream cruise

2. The Bridge Tour

See what it’s like to be on a captain seat with the Bridge Tour.

The Bridge is the most important area of the ship where the captain and his officers control and ensure that the ship runs safely on the sea.

The crew, as a guide will explain how to see the numbers on screen telling the depth of the sea, the speed, etc.

You may also have a conversation with the friendly officers.

the bridge captain room

3. Pool, Water Slide, and Sportplex

Pool and sportplex area always get busy during the day.

There’s always be activities prepared by the crew such as games, aerobic, and many more.

I didn’t try the water slide but I bet it’s gonna be fun.

There’s even a basketball court on the ship! I did the wall-climbing, rope course, and the flying-fox.

The flying-fox is one of my best experience on the ship, it’s nerve-wrecking.

Imagine you’re zip-lining from one end to another with wide open sea below, and it’s like 35 meters high!

playground dream cruise

4. Crystal Life Fitness and Spa

You may eat a lot but at least gotta burn some calories, agree?

Head to the Crystal Life Fitness Center in Genting Dream Cruise and do some cardio workout or weight-lifting, even better.

Believe me, doing workout facing the sea is not things you can do regularly, except on the cruise-so make it count!

Then you can spoil yourself with the spa treatment, what a life!

5. Bar Hopping!

Need a bit of alcohol intake to make yourself a bit more relax?

Bars are just on every corner of Dream Cruise.

If you’d like to drink while getting your tan line under the sun then Pool Deck Bar or Sun Deck Bar is the place for you.

Champagne lovers? Straight to the Bubbles Champagne Bar .

I prefer the Johnnie Walker House as a fan of whisky ( sounds like an old man, eh ).

Look at this gorgeous Whisky Constellation Wall, offering a comprehensive index of Scotch whisky distilleries.

johnnie walker house dream cruise

6. Zouk Club and Zouk Beach Club

Surprisingly, my favorite club, Zouk is inside the Genting Dream.

I was a regular at the Zouk Club Kuala Lumpur and knowing that there’s another Zouk inside the cruise reminds me of that old nights.

The DJs were great, also the lights and lasers are sick, surely meet the Zouk’s standard.

If you wanna chill a bit you can go next door to play bowling or billiard.

Another best moment in the Dream Cruise.

7. Genting Casino

Like my parents, cruising is a fun way to spend your money and bet for your luck in the casino.

Get the chips ready and hit the table, who knows you’ll bring a suitcase of dollars back home.

I don’t really see many tables on board. However, there’re some slot machines that you can play with.

The minimum bet for casino tables in Genting Dream Cruise ranges between SGD 100 – 200 .

For the machines, it shouldn’t cost that much, maybe around SGD 10 .

8. Party and Fireworks

The last night on the ship was full of blast! Everyone’s just dancing and had fun in the main pool deck.

No matter young or old, people just dance to the music and follow the movements by the crew on the stage, like a flashmob.

Looks like everyone enjoying their time, including me.

Before calling it a night, we watched the fireworks on the sea and time for sweet dreams.

Second time with Genting Dream Cruise

Far flung in the middle of the sea, a ship – immensely built and designed to award holiday-seekers with its most luxurious experience – sailed across the Malacca Strait from Singapore to Malaysia.

The art piece on the both sides of the vessel is tastefully crafted to leave a strong impression to anyone who lays eyes on it.

Genting Dream Cruise Singapore , set on its journey to entertain more than 3,000 passengers on board, including myself.

That could be a nice narrative for an intro or trailer of a movie, can you imagine that? haha .

I think I’m trying to hard to put a nice words – which I love to try for learning and practicing my writing.

So, recently I just had a trip with Genting Dream Cruise ( again! ) and I’m very excited to share it with you guys.

As you might have known, this was my second time, as always, it never failed to please me.

My Genting Dream Cruise Singapore Experience: Enroute Singapore – Port Klang – Singapore

The route that I had this time was an easy and fun 3D2N, cruising from Singapore to Port Klang and back to Singapore .

It’s also the most popular since it’s do-able for weekend trip.

Once I arrived at Marina Bay Cruise Centre , the giant ship was waiting calmly before embarking to its destination, Port Klang in Malaysia.

I couldn’t stop myself from admiring, even though it’s not my first time – either Genting Dream Cruise is too good-looking, or maybe I just missed her.

Same procedure, checking-in, clearing the immigration and custom, and lastly getting on board!

I won’t really go into details this time, cause I’ve written about it on my last post.

It’ll be more about my experience and things that I had not experience before, let’s get started!

Privacy at The Palace Suite

One thing that I noticed being in a large cruise ship was, obviously, in contact with a bee-swarm of other passengers who would likely use the facilities provided.

It can be quite overwhelming for those who prefer to enjoy the cruise peacefully.

Elevate your cruising experience by staying in The Palace – part boutique hotel, part private clubhouse – meticulously shaped to ensure absolute comfort.

Indulge in between these four different types of room or suite in The Palace: Palace Suite, Palace Deluxe Suite, Palace Penthouse, and Palace Villa .

palace suite genting dream cruise

An additional benefit for staying at The Palace is the exclusive facilities, privately accessible only for The Palace’s guests including the swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, even dining area.

On the second day on Genting Dream Cruise, we had a chance to explore the swimming pool area, no one was there.

It might be too early for people to swim at that time but it’s  a good timing for us to hit every corner and get the best angle to capture nice picture.

If only I had the whole day just relaxing, putting all the itineraries prepared for us on the side, I probably could spend the rest of the day swimming and sun-bathing here on this deck.

There are two jacuzzis just right in the front facing the ocean.

The sun, blue sky, ocean, and fancy cruise, couldn’t ask for a better way to enjoy life!

chilling genting dream

Dine, Spa, and Entertainment in Genting Dream Cruise

One thing I worried the most, and I knew it would be hard for me to handle while I was with Genting Dream Cruise.

Guess what? It’s to hold the temptation to eat all the food served at the restaurants.

Every time I stepped into a restaurant, I needed to remind myself to control my eating, or else all the diet and workouts that I had done would be useless.

You all know what happened next, don’t you? Screw the diet, I’m on holiday!

The sound of clattering spatula hitting the iron plate table jumbled with the sizzling sound of the ingredients.

Occasionally, a gleeful voice shouting in a high pitch jacked up the chaos inside the room, a good chaos.

Umi Uma Restaurant was filled with happiness, laughter, and admiration thanks to the Kungfu Chef.

Here in Uma Umi Restaurant, the food that you order will be made on spot by the chef.

On top of that, with a good sense of humor, the chef entertains everyone as a starter before the food is served and enjoyed.

I ordered the Dream Ocean from the menu, the shrimp and scallop are the rock star, served with fried rice, miso soup, and refreshing salad.

I finished everything to the last bite.

That was my first sin, the second one was lunch at Bistro by Mark Best – which wasn’t so bad in a way – that the portion was still acceptable for my diet.

It’s a fine dining anyway, a small but punching food could take me literally to heaven, cause it’s so yum!

First, they brought us a basket of bread and a plate full of salami and prosciutto.

Next, for the appetizer, a bowl of thick cauliflower soup with a drop of caviar, all the flavor exploded in my mouth!

Then the main came, pan-seared cod  with a special creamy puree and to wrap everything up, a delicate green tea cake.

umi uma restaurant genting dream

Meanwhile, when we had a bit of free time, exploring the cruise on our own was the only thing to do, better than staying inside the room.

Deck 16 and 17 were the area in Genting Dream Cruise that we hung around the most.

It’s the open area and for sure, people would love to enjoy the sun and do outdoor activities.

Everything is free to use, from swimming pool, playground, flying fox, basketball court, and outdoor beach club.

playground genting dream experience

I did try a one-hour massage here in Crystal Life Spa .

The appearance of the furniture, decoration, and the choice of color was very nice, soft and relaxing.

Before entering the room, a form was given to me and I could choose which part of my body would get more attention later on, I chose neck and shoulder, my favorite area.

The full body massage began from my back, down to my legs, and ended up with a massage in my head.

It was good, the masseuse was attentive and questioned if the strength was good enough.

I fell asleep not long before the massage finished.

Crystal spa genting dream

In my previous trip with Genting Dream Cruise, I didn’t get the chance to watch China Got Talent .

That’s why I was very excited to see the show.

It felt like we’re the audience and the judges were projected on big screen, giving comments to the performers. Some acts were thrilling, some were creative.

It goes without saying, all these performers show their best talent to entertain everyone on board.

Go watch them yourself, I don’t wanna be a spoiler!

chinese got talent performer

Sadly, everything has come to an end. Three days were too quick.

I definitely wanna check other routes by Genting Dream Cruise, maybe to Japan, or Thailand.

Or maybe it’s sister cruise, World Dream Cruise, will see!

I sailed on Royal Caribbean's 2 largest cruise ships. They were shockingly similar for the $1,000 difference

  • Royal Caribbean operates many of the cruise industry's biggest ships.
  • Icon of the Seas  launched in January, dethroning its predecessor, Wonder of the Seas, as the world's largest.
  • Here's how the two mega-ships compare in size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Insider Today

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship darling, was deemed a success before it was even built.

In January, the highly anticipated vessel — complete with more than 40 bars and restaurants, a six-slide waterpark, and a waterfall — set sail, dethroning its less than two-year-old precursor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise ship.

Before its debut, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, had already repeatedly called Icon its "best-selling product" yet. The company experienced its largest booking day ever when reservations opened for Icon of the Seas more than a year before its launch, it said

Despite all of this fanfare, you might be surprised by how similar it is to its predecessor.

I've sailed on both ships. Let's see how Icon and Wonder compare in six categories: size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Both ships stunt the size of their competitors.

best cruise singapore review

Wonder of the Seas debuted in 2022 as the then-world's largest cruise liner, measuring 235,600 gross-tons, 1,188 feet-long, and 18 decks-tall. The ship can accommodate up to 9,288 people, including 2,204 crew.

Icon of the Seas is, comparatively, 13,063 gross-tons heavier, eight feet longer, and two decks taller. It can sail up to 9,950 people, including 2,350 crew, although it's 52 feet less wide than its predecessor.

Both vessels feel more like amusement parks than traditional cruise ships.

best cruise singapore review

Royal Caribbean invited me on complimentary, non-revenue sailings on both ships: two nights on Wonder in late 2022 and three nights on Icon in January.

I spent most of my time lost, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

It's no surprise both ships are operating weeklong itineraries this year. Any less, and you might not have time to experience all the activities and restaurants on your list.

Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Wonder and Icon have eight 'neighborhoods' that serve separate purposes.

best cruise singapore review

The new ship shares three of Wonder of the Seas' neighborhoods : Central Park, Royal Promenade, and Suite.

Icon's other five — Thrill Island , Surfside, Hideaway, Chill Island, and AquaDome — are a first for the cruise line.

Many of the ships' amenities overlap, but in differing quantities.

best cruise singapore review

Wonder has three waterslides. Icon has a six-slide waterpark complete with rafting and racing options.

Both have increasingly popular cruise amenities like decks-long dry slides, mini-golf courses, rock climbing walls, and playgrounds.

But instead of Wonder of the Seas' zipline , Icon of the Seas has Crown's Edge, a thrilling agility course with a small zipline that leaves travelers dangling 154 feet above the ocean.

Wonder’s Boardwalk neighborhood was my go-to.

best cruise singapore review

Boardwalk delivered exactly as it had promised: an open-air space grounded by wood-planked floors, a hot dog stand, a sweets store, and kitschy, colorful decor.

Icon of the Seas' Surfside , designed for families with young children, felt like its closest dupe.

Both neighborhoods had a carousel, an outdoor playground, and family-friendly dining. But Surfside was more toddler-friendly, as suggested by the children's water play area and nighttime story readings.

On to entertainment: Both mega-ships have ice skating performances and exciting multi-disciplinary shows at the AquaTheater.

best cruise singapore review

But travelers who enjoy musicals at sea will want to stick to Icon.

Unlike its predecessor, the new ship shows a rendition of Broadway hit "The Wizard of Oz" — Munchkins, a puppet Toto, and a 16-piece live band included.

The layout of Icon's amenities were better than its cousin.

best cruise singapore review

Some of Wonder of the Seas' enticing outdoor amenities — like the surf simulator, zipline, and mini-golf course — are clustered on the deck above and away from the pools and water slides.

This layout might be difficult for parents with children who bounce from one activity to the next. Wouldn't it be easier to have all of these outdoor extras near each other, or at least on the same deck, for parental supervision purposes?

This is where Icon of the Seas excelled: All its exciting open-air activities were adjacent.

best cruise singapore review

The rows of pools flowed perfectly into Thrill Island's waterpark , rock climbing walls, mini-golf course, and Crown's Edge.

The best part? The adult-only Hideaway — which flexes an infinity pool club with a DJ — is right behind Thrill Island, creating a clear separation between parents and their children without being too far from each other.

'Free' options like the buffet and build-your-own tacos and burritos bar are available on both ships.

best cruise singapore review

But you won't find the larger vessel's five-stall food hall or mini-golf-adjacent finger food stand on Wonder.

As expected, Icon of the Seas has more dining options than its predecessor, although there are some overlaps.

best cruise singapore review

Wonder of the Seas has 11 bars and 21 dining venues (9 complimentary and 12 upcharged).

Icon of the Seas has eight more bars, four more complimentary restaurants, and three more specialty dining choices.

Nor will you find the new ship’s plush $200-a-person Empire Supper Club on any other cruise liner.

The multi-course dinner, paired with cocktails and live music, stunts the cost of either vessel's other dinner options.

But if you love Johnny Rockets, you’ll be disappointed by Icon of the Seas.

Restaurants like the popular burger chain and Southern comfort-inspired Mason Jar are only on Wonder of the Seas. Fine by me: My fried chicken at Mason Jar was as dry as a desert.

The younger ship doesn't have Wonder's robot bartender-armed bar either. It does, however, have new watering holes with dueling pianos and live jazz.

Surprisingly, Wonder of the Seas has 65 more cabins than its new cousin.

But several of Icon's 28 stateroom categories are a first for the cruise line.

This includes the new family infinite balcony cabin, which has a small bunk bed nook for children.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony stateroom on both ships.

My Wonder of the Seas' cabin was 20 square-feet smaller than the one on Icon. But my bathroom on the latter was so tiny, I accidentally elbowed the walls at almost every turn.

Sailing on the world's largest cruise ship doesn't mean you'll have the world's largest cabin after all.

Wonder and Icon are both operating seven-night roundtrip itineraries from Florida to the Caribbean.

In 2024, Wonder of the Seas is scheduled for year-round sailings from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , starting at $700 per person.

Icon of the Seas is spending its first year in service operating nearly identical itineraries but from Miami instead. The cheapest 2024 option is $1,786 per person.

That's a difference of more than $125 per person per day.

"Bookings and pricing for Icon of the Seas can only be described as 'iconic,'" Naftali Holtz, the CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in February.

Icon of the Seas’ name speaks for itself.

If your family is looking for a jam-packed kid-friendly cruise with enough amenities to stay entertained for a week, both ships are a great option.

But if you're a seasoned mega-ship-cruiser looking to experience something new, Icon of the Seas is your best bet.

They may be similar, but no other behemoth cruise liner has a waterpark for children and a pool club for adults just dozens of feet from each other.
