You won’t be treated to any rousing choruses of “Some Enchanted Evening” in Journey to the South Pacific , but this equally exotic Imax entry proves enchanting in its own right. 

Charting a course for the islands along the West Papua, Indonesia, archipelago, this 40-minute giant-screen 3D excursion takes full advantage of the expansive format to immerse the viewer in the vibrant seascape, while making an impassioned statement for the conversation of the region’s rich island culture. The first film to be released under a multi-picture pact between Imax and MacGillivray Freeman Films, Journey to the South Pacific began its rollout in select Imax theaters on Nov. 27.

For veteran large-format director Greg MacGillivray , who has 37 giant-screen productions on his resume, including the Oscar-nominated The Living Sea and Dolphins, the marine setting represents a personal passion.

Here, sharing directing credit with Stephen Judson , who also serves as the film’s writer and editor, MacGillivray makes a convincing case for ocean preservation: A group of Indonesian island kids are about to embark on a two-month excursion aboard the Kalabia, a floating classroom that will give them a hands-on education about their one-of-a-kind coral reef.

Home to an estimated 2,000 species of marine life, including the endangered giant leatherback turtle, the undersea environment is captured with the format’s typically vibrant and gorgeously detailed camerawork (by director of underwater photography Howard Hall ), while above sea level, the region’s pristine, sun-kissed vistas similarly pop, courtesy of director of photography Brad Ohlund ’s fly-on-the-wall camerawork.

Working in tandem, the visuals bring the audience right alongside those swaying manta rays, or, in one of the film’s most stirring sequences, in breathtakingly close proximity as Jawi , a 13-year-old student, goes for a lyrical swim right next to a 40-foot-long spotted whale shark.

And although there’s no Rodgers and Hammerstein on the soundtrack, the ukulele-backed folk songs of the locals and narrator Cate Blanchett ’s comforting tones add a fitting serenity to the proceedings.

Most inspiring are the steps taken toward environmental protection, with locals successfully correcting the once seemingly irreversible practices of overfishing and polluting that were threatening to decimate that wondrous aquatic world. By the time 40 minutes are up, you’re left with the impression that young Jawi and his fellow students will make good on their promise as the conservators of their South Pacific ocean paradise.

Paris 2024 Olympic flame lit at ancient birthplace of the Games

The sacred flame for the Paris 2024 Olympics was lit Tuesday in Greece’s ancient Olympia, birthplace of the ancient Games, kicking off an epic torch relay stretching from the Acropolis to the South Pacific.

Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of high priestess, lit the torch using a backup flame instead of a parabolic mirror due to cloudy skies for the start of a relay in Greece and France . The relay will culminate with the lighting of the Olympic flame in the French capital at the opening ceremony. 

Hundreds of dignitaries and spectators are attending the ritual in the small Peloponnese town in southwestern Greece where the Olympics were born in 776 BCE, and where the ceremony is held every two years for the summer and winter Olympics.

For the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic imposed toned-down events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2022 Beijing Games, spectators are able to attend the torch relay events.

The ceremony, conducted at the ruins of the 2,600-year-old Temple of Hera, was headed by International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo  are among the dignitaries attending the event.

The torch harks back to the ancient Olympics when a sacred flame burned throughout the Games. The tradition was revived in 1936 for the Berlin Games.

During the 11-day relay on Greek soil, some 600 torchbearers will carry the flame over a distance of 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) through 41 municipalities.

Carried by ship

On April 27, the flame will begin its journey to France on board the 19th-century three-masted barque Belem, which was launched just weeks after the 1896 Athens Games.

A French historical monument, the Belem carried out trade journeys to Brazil, Guyana and into the Caribbean for nearly two decades.

France's last surviving three-mast steel-hulled boat, it is expected to arrive in Marseille on May 8.

Ten thousand torchbearers will then carry the flame across 64 French territories.

It will travel through 400 towns and dozens of tourist attractions during its 12,000-kilometre (7,500-mile) journey through mainland France and overseas French territories in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific.

On July 26, it will form the centrepiece of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, which is currently set to take place on the river Seine .

Innovative Course Empowers Pacific Scholars on Their Ocean-Climate Research Journey

The Norway-Pacific Ocean-Climate Scholarship Programme (N-POC) scholarship programme proudly announced the completion of another significant milestone since its inception.

Seventeen N-POC PhD scholars have recently completed and passed the first of their inaugural courses, titled Multidisciplinary Methodologies for Global Challenges: Pacific Research Narratives (NPOC903), which began on the 10th of January and concluded on the 15th of March.

This course was delivered by academics from the University of Bergen (UiB), as a standard requirement of PhD programmes.

The innovative course, spanning five modules, was jointly facilitated by Associate Professor Geir Henning Presterudstuen, PhD scholar Mr Håkon Larsen and Professor Edvard Hviding (N-POC Coordinator), all of UiB. It was designed to equip participants with invaluable skills and perspectives crucial for their PhD research. This course integrated Western scientific perspectives and paradigms with the rich cultural and methodological traditions of the Pacific Islands.

The N-POC scholars were encouraged to explore how to harness Indigenous knowledge and interweave it with Western research methodologies. The highly interactive course has given N-POC PhD students a more precise knowledge of the connections between Indigenous wisdom, how knowledge is preserved and transferred, as well as using academic research methodological skills to ethically capture this knowledge to complement and strengthen their research.

The course concluded with each PhD scholar presenting a three-minute summary of their research to a distinguished panel including Dr Joeli Veitayaki, a former USP academic, Dr Katy Soapi, the

Coordinator for Partnerships and Engagement at SPC, and Mr Aliioaiga Feturi Elisaia, the High Commissioner of Samoa to Fiji, who all shared heartfelt accolades for the important research being undertaken by all of the N-POC scholars.

By using an inclusive and interactive approach for the delivery of this course helps build a stronger foundation for knowledge that can bridge the Ocean-Climate nexus, and enable USP’s researchers make significant contributions to policies tailored to the Pacific context.

This course has also unearthed some special ways researchers can contribute to Pacific story-telling as a means to communicate their research to a wider audience. The N-POC scholars are excited as they learn news ways to grow as confident and proud Pacific researchers, amplifying the voices from the Pacific within and beyond academia.

The NPOC scholars will also complete an additional two courses before mid-2024, with the UiB Summer School in Norway, and then a 10-day programme focused on international environmental diplomacy to be held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The N-POC programme’s mission is to support world-class research on critical issues related to the ocean and climate nexus impacts in the Pacific region, to inform better policies and practices.

The programme continues to make an impressive contribution to the collective knowledge, understanding and wisdom to benefit the Pacific region, for which USP, UiB and the Norwegian government are very proud.
