The 6 Best Horse Farm Tours in Lexington, Kentucky

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Lexington, Kentucky, is known for two things: whiskey and horses. Often referred to as the Horse Capital of the World, the city is home to more than 400 horse farms and the famous Keeneland Race Course (featured in several movies). It has bred more Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners than anywhere else in the world. Race fans and equestrians alike flock to Lexington to see how these horses live and train. With so many venues to interact with these horses, it can be hard to decide where to start. Here is your go-to roundup of Lexington, Kentucky's best horse farm tours.

Jonabell Farm

Courtesy of Jonabell Farm

Jonabell Farm, home to HH Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, is one of the most successful breeding sites globally, producing more than 200 stakes-winning racehorses. This tour takes guests through the history and current-day practices of Jonabell, as well as an up-close viewing of their current stallions. A shuttle tour is also available, featuring a scenic drive over Jonabells’ 800 acres of paddocks to see the mares and foals on the farm.

Three Chimneys Farm

Three Chimneys is one of the most respected stud farms in the business. This tour takes guests through the palatial stables and allows for some facetime with their current horses. The tour continues on to walk visitors through the breeding process and all safety measures that Three Chimneys takes to ensure the health and safety of these prestigious horses. It concludes with a walk around the green paddocks where the horses enjoy acres of land. This scenic farm is an excellent stop for newbies or lifelong fans of the sport.

Claiborne Farm

Courtesy of Claiborne Farm

This 109-year-old farm is often cited as the "Horse Capital of the World." Claiborne Farm boasts 3,000 acres for its prized stallions to run and has been home to 300 sires of champions, 10 Kentucky Derby, and six Triple Crown winners. This tour lets guests view the breeding shed and current horses that call Claiborne home and ends with viewing the famous Secretariat's gravesite. This is a can't-miss for any horse racing fan—in fact, the Queen of England has visited twice!

Denali Stud

Courtesy of Denali Stud Farm

Denali Stud is a world-renowned horse farm that has trained a litany of winning horses and has sold more than $475 million worth of horses since 1990. A Denali tour will take guests through their impressive history and current breeding and training practices. In the spring, guests can get up close and personal with the mares and foals, and on lucky days guests have been able to watch foals be born!

New Vocations

Courtesy of New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

Get a unique view of what happens after the racing stops. New Vocations is the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the United States. Focusing on rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming, this organization saves retired racehorses from an otherwise uncertain future and promotes their use as riding horses, sport horses, or simply great companions. Working with more than 500 horses a year, New Vocations has managed to rehome more than 7,500 horses since its inception in 1992.

While not a farm tour, Keeneland is an absolute must for any equestrian fan visiting Lexington. The famous racetrack is also the largest thoroughbred sale site globally and offers several different tours that take guests behind the scenes of both the racing and sales sides. The horses' morning workouts are free and open to the public, and guests interested in betting during a race can talk to the newly instituted “bet-ologists” who walk newcomers through the wagering process.

'I love these horses': Lexington tour guide puts special touch on 'Unique Horse Farm Tours'

horse tour lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The heart of the thoroughbred industry is in central Kentucky, with many prestigious horse farms sprawling among the Bluegrass. Lucky for us, many of the farms open their gates to the public for tours.

One popular tour company, "Unique Horse Farm Tours," has been offering people a look behind the scenes for years.

Shaun Washington, with his wealth of knowledge and personal anecdotes, has truly found his calling in running a horse farm tour business. He makes "Unique Horse Farm Tours" just that... unique!

We met him at Katie Rich Farm in Midway. He seemed at home here, and he made us feel the same way.

"We probably got 30 yearlings here," said Washington. "As you can well see, this is my favorite, probably."

His love of horses started longer ago than he can remember.

"My grandfather trained thoroughbreds 55 years, so I've been around thoroughbreds my entire life," he says.

Shaun followed his grandfather to Keeneland and other tracks and training centers. As much of a horse person as he is, he's also a people person, having worked for some big farm owners around Lexington over the years.

Put those two together, and he's hit the jackpot.

"I'm excited about going to work every day," said Washington. "My wife is a little hard on me because I work seven days, but I love these tours, and I love these horses. And the horses are waiting on me every day! They can't wait til I show up!"

Washington's "Unique Horse Farm Tours" start at 8:30 in the morning. He does a second tour around noon and sometimes even a third during the busiest months.

They visit a few horse farms, and sometimes, they'll see an equine hospital or make a stop at Keeneland in the morning.

In a way, Katie Rich Farm is home base.

"If I know there was a foal born last night over here, this is the first place we're coming, but we really don't have a set route. We got a lot of options."

"You can see when everyone gets off the bus how much they really enjoy it," said Larry Doyle, owner of Katie Rich Farm. "Shaun's the best. He's just so funny and colorful, and we have a great time every time he comes on the farm."

Doyle named the farm after his two children. It's a nursery farm.

"It's been a lot of fun. I meet a lot of great people," he says. "This industry is really fun."

About 30 foals are born here each year. Doyle enjoys opening the doors to the public to see these amazing animals and all the care that goes into them daily.

And it's people like Washington who help make the connection.

"I'm right where I want to be in my life," he says. "I want to be around these horses and these farms, and I love Lexington, Kentucky."

Bourbon Tour

Kentucky's bourbon tour.

Kentucky bourbon helped shape the landscape and people of this great state. You won’t find better bourbon anywhere and it’s a legacy we’re proud to call our own. Our Kentucky bourbon tour shows you how bourbon is made in three different distilleries.

Refine your Bourbon Education

In order for whiskey to be considered straight bourbon, it has to be at least 51 percent made from corn, aged for a minimum of two years and come from the state of Kentucky. The corn is what gives the Kentucky bourbon its sweetness, but it’s how each distillery imbues it with their own spices and aging secrets that create the full-bodied flavor.

No two bourbons are the same and each distillery has their own secrets and flavor that you’ll get to experience. There is so much that goes into the flavor of bourbon from the strains of yeast, barrel char and age, you’ll be amazed how they do it. The best bourbon distillery tours involve a mix of education and fun. We want your experience to create memories that last a lifetime.

Our Bourbon Tours

All of our Kentucky bourbon trail tours begin around 9 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. Tours must have a minimum of four people and a maximum of 12.

Buffalo Trace Distillery

For more than 200 years, Buffalo Trace Distillery has been a world leader in bourbon. Their bourbon has an aroma of vanilla, mint and molasses and won more than 500 awards and accolades including the 2018 Distiller of the Year from Icons of Whisky America.

The tour will explore the rich history of the distillery and see how the bourbon is filled and packaged by hand. Walk through the rolling bourbon barrels and smell the bourbon aging.

Buffalo Trace Distillery

Woodford Reserve Distillery

Woodford Reserve Distillery produces small batch straight bourbon whiskey that has more than 200 unique flavors from fruit and floral to bold grain and wood. Began in 1812 by Elijah Pepper in the heart of bourbon country, Woodford Reserve Distillery features a 500-foot gravity-fed barrel run and 100-year-old Cypress fermenters.

The tour features a history of bourbon and participants learn about out bottling process and we can’t forget about the tasting.

Castle & Key

Visiting Castle & Key Distillery is like stepping into a time capsule of bourbon history, where every corner of the grounds tells a story of craftsmanship and dedication. Open since 2018, the distillery is housed in the meticulously restored Old Taylor Distillery, a landmark that dates back to 1887 and served as a distillery as early as 1819. The Castle itself, with its original hardwood floors and plaster walls, is a testament to the historic charm that permeates the site, providing a unique backdrop for the magic of spirits production.

Exploring the grounds offers a journey through various historic buildings, each with its own unique purpose and story. From the Springhouse, where Colonel E.H. Taylor selected the site for its quality springs, to the Octagonal Tower that once served as a yeast laboratory, every structure plays a crucial role in the distillery's rich history. The Boiler Room, Taylorton Station, and the Superintendent's Cottage have been meticulously restored to offer a blend of history and modernity. The botanical trail, Sunken Garden, and warehouses provide a picturesque setting for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of Castle & Key.

Lexington Housing Authority debuts five new affordable townhomes in the East End.

Each of the townhomes at the corner of east sixth street and pemberton boasts two bedrooms and one-and-a-half bathrooms. they're designed for families who have been homeless or are at risk of homelessness..

Austin Simms, Executive Director of the Housing Authority, said the new units - sporting blue, yellow, and pink paint - are indistinguishable from housing available in the private market.

"These vibrant colors are a stark difference from the red brick row housing we have become accustomed to," said Simms.

The townhomes are in Lexington's East End, part of Council District 1, which is served by Councilwoman Tayna Fogle.

"When you look at this, it doesn't look like the East End projects," said Fogle. "It doesn't look like really low-income housing that no one wants to live in. It's not built shabby; it's sturdy."

Fogle hopes developments like this one will dispel fears of affordable housing being undesirable and encourage more communities to incorporate housing options for people of varying income levels. She says access to stable housing helps families feel invested in their communities, and is part of the solution to crime and gun violence.

"When your motivation goes up and you live better, you do better," said Fogle. "And you protect where you live."

Sierra Johnson is a Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Specialist with the Housing Authority; it's her job to screen referrals for eligibility in supportive housing programs.

"Our referrals come from the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention," said Johnson. "They get them off the coordinated entry list."

Two families have already been approved to move into the new townhomes. Johnson says the Housing Authority provides them with case management, pays utility services, and connects them with other essential wrap-around services.

“That can look like providing them with resources to the food bank, clothing, Goodwill, Salvation Army, or getting them back into school, if that’s something they want to do,” said Johnson. “Community resources can help them along their journey to get back into living a regular life.

Over the past decade, the city’s Affordable Housing Fund has invested $47 million in the construction and preservation of nearly 3500 housing units with more on the way; the city’s 2024 budget allocates 1% of the past year’s revenue toward affordable housing – over $4.5 million.

Went around 12:30 on a Sunday with a group of 4. A very nice lady took our order. Burgers were very tasty, with unique flavor. My wife LOVED the hashbrown casserole that came with her also very good bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. We will return soon.

Love, Love, Love this sweet spot! We booked this restaurant for our 20 person group and they gave us a great lunch following a horse farm tour nearby. Our graduation party was escorted to an elegant private room with a lovely creative buffet of their specialties awaited. The owners and staff were wonderful. My group loved it!!

Grilled cheese and tomato basil soup was my hubby's choice and he said both were the best he's ever had even his which is saying something! I at the BLT w/ Pasta Salad. Bacon was thick and cooked to perfection! The smash burger was my son's order and it was huge and he ate every bite. Delish!

Locally owned and sourced, I think. We came on Taco Tuesday, and we weren't disappointed. Very fresh takes on Mexican classics. My mom had a burrito minus this and that, and she loved it. I got 3 vegetarian tacos, and they were perfect. Multiple vegetarian options. Also is part-store with nice household items. Make sure you take a ride across the ferry into Madison County and check out Newby Grocery.

No damage was reported as a strong storm went through Lexington early Wednesday, but the city is under an slight risk of severe weather for the rest of the day. Hazards include heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and hail, but forecasters didn’t rule out the chances of a severe storm.

Multiple Western Kentucky counties along with areas in Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee are under a moderate risk for severe weather in the NWS’ severe weather outlook . The moderate risk zone is the second highest risk zone in the NWS’ severe weather outlook.

A tornado watch has been issued for Ballard, Caldwell, Calloway, Carlisle, Christian, Crittenden, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Hopkins, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken Muhlenberg, Todd and Trigg counties, according to the NWS. The watch will be in effect until at least 5 p.m. CST.

At 1:15 p.m. CST the tornado watch was extended to include Adair, Allen, Barren, Breckinridge, Butler, Clinton, Cumberland, Daviess, Edmonson, Grayson, Green, Hancock, Hardin, Hart, Henderson, Larue, Logan, McLean, Meade, Metcalfe, Monroe, Ohio, Russell, Simpson, Taylor, Union, Warren and Webster counties. The watch for those counties will be in effect until at least 9 p.m. CST., according to the NWS.

Forecasters in the severe weather outlook said strong thunderstorms appear likely. The main hazards in the storms are tornadoes EF-2 or stronger, significant destructive winds up to 70 miles per hour and very large to giant hail.

The storms could span a period of several hours, beginning in the later morning hours, according to the NWS branch in Paducah. Forecasters said in the area forecast discussion that an approaching cold front later Wednesday afternoon will ignite a significant risk of a severe weather outbreak in the afternoon/evening hours.

Potential impacts from the storms are damage to homes, vehicles, trees, power lines and injuries to those caught outside in a storm, according to the NWS.

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes is possible through tonight. All modes of severe weather, including damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes, will be possible. Flash flooding is also likely where thunderstorms train over the same locations. pic.twitter.com/fwRbNy6s0I — NWS Paducah, KY (@NWSPaducah) May 8, 2024

Western Kentucky University announced it was closing all of its campuses at noon CST in preparation for the storms.

On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear encouraged everyone to stay up to date on the latest forecast and have a plan for severe weather.

“I’m taking this seriously, this is where my family lives, and I hope everyone else will take it seriously too,” Beshear said.

Lexington weather forecast; no damage from overnight storms

Virtually all of Kentucky, including Lexington, is under a flood watch through Thursday morning. The NWS said flooding from the excessive rainfall is possible in areas near rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

The northeastern parts of Fayette County received over an inch of rain between 8 a.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the NWS.

Lexington and areas of northern and eastern Kentucky are in the slight risk zone of the NWS’ severe weather outlook. Lexington was previously in the enhanced risk zone but the improved forecast lowered Lexington’s chances of experiencing severe weather.

Areas to the northeast of Lexington are under marginal risk for severe weather, which is below slight risk. A slight risk for severe weather, “implies organized severe thunderstorms are expected, but usually in low coverage with varying levels of intensity,” the NWS said.

At 10 a.m. forecasters said the severe weather risk in the early afternoon for central Kentucky is low and it does not seem likely that the storms coming from the west will intensify.

The main threats from the storm now include locally heavy rainfall, cloud-to-ground lightning and small to marginally severe hail, according to the NWS. Despite the improving forecast, the NWS didn’t rule out the possibility of larger hail and stronger storms.

Additional storms in the form of a squall line are expected in the evening. The NWS said all severe hazards are possible with the squall line.

More storms are expected today and tonight. Large hail, damaging winds, tornadoes, and flooding are all possible. Stay weather aware! #kywx #inwx pic.twitter.com/SIg4NkB2to — NWS Louisville (@NWSLouisville) May 8, 2024

A strong storm hit Lexington in the early morning hours Wednesday, according to WKYT chief meteorologist Chris Bailey. No damage was reported but the LG&E & KU power outage map showed 21 outages affecting 382 customers Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday night, Bailey reported a possible tornado near Natural Bridge State Park, but the NWS has not confirmed a touchdown. He later posted pictures on social media of trees down in the area.

There previously was an outage in the Versailles Road area near the Blue Grass Airport but power in the area has since been restored. The Blue Grass Airport’s flight status board shows all flights are running on time.

Beshear confirmed there were several downed trees at Natural Bridge State Park but it is still operational. Beshear added no injuries were reported from Tuesday’s storms.

“I’m thankful for our first responders, who helped keep everyone safe,” Beshear said in a post on X. “Remember to stay weather aware again today as more severe storms are expected.”

We have an update from last night's storms. Thankfully, and most importantly, there were no injuries. Natural Bridge State Park did have several downed trees but is still fully operational. I'm thankful for our first responders, who helped keep everyone safe. — Governor Andy Beshear (@GovAndyBeshear) May 8, 2024
