The Mediterranean Sea touches 22 nations and borders more than 28,000 miles of coastline, according to the Europe Environment Agency . From the Greek Islands to Egypt, Croatia to Morocco, and Slovenia to Spain, the rugged coastlines dip into the crystalline waters, providing a connection point to some of the most intriguing destinations on the planet. But, rather than traversing these destinations by car, train, or plane, visitors can see and do more by taking to the water for a Mediterranean cruise.
From seeing historical monuments to experiencing local cuisine, shopping in some of the most luxurious places on Earth, and visiting awe-inspiring beaches, cruising provides stellar connections to Mediterranean countries. These cruises also cater to every type of traveler — from multigenerational families to solo travelers with options for adults only and all ages. Here are 10 of the best Mediterranean cruises to check out for your next vacation.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn

The trip takes guests to seven countries, including Spain, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Monaco, and France, with stops in both major and smaller ports. Those looking to enhance the journey can book with “inclusive value,” which adds one complimentary shore excursion, free Wi-Fi, beer, wine, and soft drinks, visits to UNESCO sites, and more to allow for more time spent traveling and less time worrying about pricing. Guests can also book pre- and post-trip stays in ports of call if they aren’t ready to go home after three weeks on the water.
Azamara is a luxurious option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The cruise line also emphasizes hyper-local experiences to allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, culture, and life of its ports of call, even if they’re there just for a day. The cruise line offers a variety of destinations and cruise lengths, including 10, 12, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in the ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.
Trip to Try: 15-night Pharaoh Kings and Emperors
Make your way through five counties (Italy, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece) on this more than two-week adventure. The voyage highlights destinations ruled by famed pharaohs, kings, and emperors and emphasizes the region’s spectacular history. Shore excursion options include exploring the ruins of Pompeii, seeing the biblical destinations of Nazareth and Galilee, and simply soaking in the ambiance of Capri for an entire day.
Want personalized service at every turn? Book an Oceania cruise. The cruise line prides itself on its low guest-to-crew member ratio, ensuring your every need is easily met. The company offers plentiful options when it comes to Mediterranean sailings, including seven, 14, 21, and even 38-day cruises for those who can’t get enough. With this cruise company, you’re almost spoiled with choice, making it hard to pick just one itinerary. So maybe, think about it as this year’s trip, then the next, then the next, and on and on forever, because there are just so many options available.
Trip to Try: Monte Carlo to Athens
The 10-day trip takes sailors through ultra-luxe ports, including visits to Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez, Florence, Rome, Valletta, Rhodes, and Athens. From the old villages to the glittering casinos, the shore excursions with this journey abound. Though there’s plenty to do onboard too, including wine tastings, guest lectures, and fun-filled trivia nights with fellow guests.
Celebrity Cruises

Travelers vacationing with the entire family — from grandma to kids — should check out Celebrity Cruises. The cruise line offers more options for everyone onboard (think kids club to casinos), as well as varied shore excursions and affordable pricing options to make it a more viable trip for larger groups.

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers onboard. The line offers ships with between 51 to 364 suites, meaning they max out at far fewer passengers than its larger counterparts, which enables more personalized service and higher-end amenities. It also offers all-inclusive packages to reduce the stressors that often come with pay-as-you-go travel.
Trip to Try: Athens to Venice
This 22-day trip tracks its way through 20 ports via five countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, and Turkey. Walk the cobblestone streets on the Greek Islands, see the colorful coastline in Marmaris, admire the glittering lights from the homes that snake their way up Lovćen Mountain, and more. Onboard, dine in one of the ship’s eight restaurants, take a dip in the top deck pool, or lounge in a common space to regale your fellow guests about the day’s adventure.
Holland America
Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line
Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Holland America also offers a varied pricing list to allow people to choose the right price point for them, with rooms ranging from interior staterooms that come with 151 square feet to over-the-top suites with 712 square feet to stretch out in.
Trip to Try: 12-day Adriatic Dream
For 12 glorious days, you can set sail through the Mediterranean with Holland America. The trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). When not exploring at port, make sure to take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa, which comes with the bonus of the soft rocking of the waves to lull you into tranquility.
Princess Cruises
Danny Lehman/Courtesy of Princess Cruises
Princess Cruises is yet another on the list that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but it more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, kids and teen offerings, and the fact that it now has “The Princess Luxury Beds” onboard. The cruise line created the beds in a special collaboration with a sleep expert to ensure every guest leaves feeling fully recharged.
Trip to Try: 14-day Mediterranean and Israel
The two-week trip stops in 10 different ports in Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and so much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with 119-foot balconies so you can let the fresh ocean breeze in.
Cunard Line
Classic, elegant, and forever in style, Cunard Line is the cruise to choose if chicness is your top priority. Its boats are decked out in luxurious styling, including the Queen Elizabeth , which makes its way through the Med with art deco decor, plush sundeck furnishings, and high-end dining experiences included.
Trip to Try: Western Mediterranean
Take the seven-night journey on Cunard’s Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Mallorca, Corsica, Rome, and Naples. Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, shop and eat your way through Rome, walk in the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte in Corsica, and so much more.
Royal Caribbean
Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean is the line to choose for those traveling in groups with varied interests and age levels. Think, the kids who want to play all day, the adults who want to lounge by the pool, the friend who wants to explore a city’s history through tours, or the friend who wants to stay up all night enjoying the onboard entertainment. And, best of all, it’s one of the few in the Med to offer options for those who are short on time or want to tack on a quick sailing to a longer trip.
Trip to Try: 3-night Cyprus Cruise
Spend three perfect days sailing from Haifa, Israel to Limassol, Cyprus, and back again. The quick cruise is the perfect way to get on the water if you just want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. Check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have the perfect place to call home, even for a few days, each night.
Mediterranean cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do
No two Mediterranean cruises are the same. Some bring travelers to the French and Italian rivieras for food, wine and cultural pursuits. Others head east to the Greek Islands, where passengers alternate days sipping ouzo at a beachfront taverna with trips to ancient sites. Each itinerary is a mix of urban tourist capitals — Barcelona! Rome! Istanbul! Jerusalem! — and sleeper gems, such as Portofino, Italy, or Kotor, Montenegro.
If you've never been to Europe, you may feel overwhelmed by destination choices. If you know which ports are on your must-see list, you might be more stumped by which cruise line to choose or which specific itinerary will be the best for you.

Know that you can't see everything in one Mediterranean cruise — even on sailings that run multiple weeks. Once you let go of your need to see and do it all and accept that you're on a sampler tour, you'll be better able to make your cruise selections and enjoy the ports your ship does visit.
Get started with this Mediterranean cruise guide. You'll learn the basics of itineraries, cruise lines, destinations, when to go and when to book your European adventure at sea.
Why cruise to the Mediterranean?
Many of the European countries on your travel bucket list lie along the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt. A cruise lets you hit many of the hot spots (the French Riviera, Barcelona and Venice, Italy) on one trip without having to navigate multiple hotels, transportation between cities and making dinner reservations in foreign languages.
For some people those experiences are a key part of travel. However, for vacationers who want all the attractions without the hassle, a cruise is an ideal way to explore the Mediterranean. This type of European cruise can be especially alluring to honeymooners, families and older couples.
Mediterranean cruises beckon travelers with a love of culture and history. Visit the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, or the Colosseum in Rome; see Michelangelo's David in Florence, Italy; or make a pilgrimage to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Take a tour to a medieval town or marvel at the construction of a soaring cathedral. If you've always wanted to see the pyramids in Giza, Egypt; the ruins in Ephesus, Turkey, and Pompeii, Italy; Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona; and the famous casino in Monaco, you can do it easily on a Mediterranean sailing.
You can also eat your way through the markets, cafes, trattorias, gelato shops and crepe stands in the ports you visit. Sample local wines at vineyards in France and Italy, or sip ouzo or limoncello made on the premises.
When do cruises go to the Mediterranean?
You might be surprised to learn that cruise ships sail the Mediterranean year-round.
The majority of ships, however, arrive in the spring and depart in the fall, choosing warmer climes like the Caribbean for holiday sailings. Only a few hardy stalwarts remain through the winter months. Most of those are European-based lines, such as Costa Cruises , MSC Cruises and Celestyal Cruises , but Viking also braves chilly weather for its destination-focused itineraries in Europe.
Best Mediterranean itineraries
You can find a variety of weeklong Mediterranean cruises, but if you've got the time, nine- to 14-night sailings are not uncommon. Seven-night cruises are best if you're short on time or want to tack on a few days in Barcelona, Rome or Athens before or after your cruise. Longer itineraries are ideal for experiencing a greater variety of destinations and traversing more of the Med.
Here are some the best Mediterranean cruise itineraries you should consider for your European vacation.
Western Mediterranean
The classic Western Mediterranean cruise sails between Barcelona and Rome, and calls in ports in Spain, France, Monaco and Italy. This is your chance to explore Tuscany and the French Riviera, as well as hit up Florence, Monte Carlo, Naples and islands such as Corsica, Mallorca, Sicily and Sardinia. Just watch out: Marquee destinations like Rome and Florence are both located an hour or more from the cruise port, so get ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship.
Greece and Turkey
The classic Eastern Mediterranean cruise sails out of Athens or Istanbul and visits a mix of historic places (Delphi, Ephesus via Kusadasi, Rhodes) and sun-drenched islands (Mykonos and Santorini).
Adriatic Sea
Some so-called Mediterranean cruises actually spend most of their time on the Adriatic Sea, sailing from Venice and visiting ports in Croatia and Greece, and sometimes Montenegro and Albania. You may also find an Adriatic sailing wrapped into longer Western or Eastern Mediterranean cruises.
The most easterly of the Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, Holy Land cruises spend time in Israel and sometimes Egypt, often with overnight stops or multiple days spent in each country to maximize touring opportunities. These sailings may also call in Cyprus or ports in Greece and Turkey.
Best Mediterranean cruise lines
Most major cruise lines send at least one ship to the Mediterranean every year. Even Carnival Cruise Line , known for its affordable cruises out of U.S. home ports, offers some Mediterranean sailings, as does Disney Cruise Line , which typically bases its ships near its theme parks.
If you're looking for a bigger ship, Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are the best choices as they base a handful of ships in the Mediterranean each year, arriving in the spring and departing in the fall. These lines offer a variety of itinerary choices, so you can find the Mediterranean ports you most want to visit. You'll also find lots of restaurant choices and evening entertainment options to keep you occupied at night when the ship is sailing.
Couples or families with grown children looking for longer sailings and a destination focus should consider Viking, which offers eight- to 15-night cruises through the Mediterranean, including three- and four-week voyages for retirees (or workationers?) who have the time for a most thorough exploration of the region.
Which luxury line is best for your Mediterranean cruise will come down to what you're looking for in a luxury ship and a European itinerary. However, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises stand out for including a large variety of shore excursions in their cruise fares. If you're a foodie, these two lines plus Oceania Cruises are notable for their culinary tours in port, plus destination-themed cooking classes on board.
Things to do in the Mediterranean
Sightseeing is a big component of Mediterranean cruises, whether that's exploring a historic site like the Roman Forum or the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia; visiting cathedrals in Florence and Barcelona; or touring medieval villages, forts and old towns. You might want to skip the formal tours and merely wander around the port town, browsing local shops or grabbing a coffee or snack in a local cafe.
Culinary tours are also popular here. You can choose from roving food tours, cooking classes, winery visits and tastings, and meals made with local produce and cheeses in beautiful villa or farmhouse settings.
Travelers looking to stretch their legs might want to sign up for cycling tours in city and country settings, hike around a volcano on Santorini or Sicily, or even take a kayak for a spin in Croatia or Greece.
A beach day is possible in the Greek Islands or along the French Riviera, and many ports will have sightseeing cruises.
Best Mediterranean cruise ports
Everyone has their favorite list of the best Mediterranean cruise ports (as evidenced by the discussion I just had with TPG's cruise team about which to include). Some travelers want to hit all the most popular cities, while others prioritize the ability to walk right off the ship into the heart of the town. Some ports are better for historical attractions, others for cafe culture or outdoor activities.
The following cruise ports are generally standouts, no matter your travel style.
Barcelona: Both an embarkation port and a port of call, depending on your itinerary, Barcelona has much to offer first-timers and repeat visitors. Cruise ships dock at the end of Las Ramblas, the main thoroughfare in the old part of the city, so it's easy to leave the ship and simply wander. Don't miss Gaudi's fantastical buildings or a meal of tapas.
Monte Carlo, Monaco: Monte Carlo is both a fascinating port on its own and a gateway to the French Riviera. In town, you can walk to the casino, palace and stunning oceanographic museum. From town, you can take the twisty-turny Corniche coastal roads to destinations like Nice, Eze, Cannes and Grasse.
Dubrovnik, Croatia: Even if you're not in it for the "Game of Thrones" tour, you will be captivated by Dubrovnik and its famous walled city. Walk the walls or take to the water for scenic views of the old town.
Rome: It's actually a pain to get to Rome from the cruise port of Civitavecchia by bus or train, but it's worth it to experience the Eternal City firsthand. Tour the Vatican and Sistine Chapel at St. Peter's Cathedral, step back in time at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, climb the Spanish Steps, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and meander through the Borghese Gardens. When your feet give out, take a breather with a gelato or plate of pasta.
Rhodes, Greece: The historic port of Rhodes no longer has a Colossus, but that doesn't take away its appeal. Ensconced by ancient stone walls, Old Town is easily walkable, composed of cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and stores housed in structures dating back to the 14th century. If shopping isn't your thing, keep walking until you reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, where you can take a tour, or venture out to one of the city's beaches.
Naples, Italy: Naples is one of our favorite ports because you have so many options of what to do there. It's the jumping-off point for tours to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Or, if you want to explore the city on your own, perhaps sitting down to a lunch of the region's famous pizza, it's a quick walk right into town from your cruise ship.
Ashdod, Israel : Most cruisers don't stick around Ashdod; it makes our list of best Mediterranean cruise ports because it's the gateway to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea. Prepare to be amazed by the sites you will see, but also be ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship touring.
Istanbul: Istanbul is the vibrant city you might not know you need to visit. Serving as both a departure port and port of call on Mediterranean cruises, the city offers something for everything: the cultural icons of the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, intense shopping experiences at the Grand Bazaar, Byzantine palaces, traditional Turkish baths (called hammams), flavorful cuisine, Bosporus day cruises between Europe and Asia, and plenty of neighborhoods to explore.
When to book a Mediterranean cruise
It's a good idea to book your Mediterranean cruise early, even nine to 12 months in advance. You can take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions and have the widest selection of available cabins and suites and dining times (if applicable). An early booking is ideal if you're planning on using miles to book your flights or points for a pre-cruise hotel. Look for fall sales when the current Mediterranean season is winding down.
Another smart time to book a Mediterranean cruise is during January or February when cruise lines run their " wave season " sales, often with lots of extra freebies thrown into the cost of the sailing. You might find last-minute deals on spring cruises to Europe or still be considered early for fall itineraries.
What to bring on a Mediterranean cruise
The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate, but it still gets chilly in the spring and fall and can be brutally hot in the summer. Check the weather before your sail date and pack for the predicted temperatures — with layers, in case the forecasters are wrong and it's unseasonably hot or cold.
You'll likely do a good deal of walking on a Mediterranean cruise, so a good pair of walking shoes is a must. Bonus if you can find cute options you can wear on sea days or sneakers that can do double duty in the ship's gym.
If your tours take you to religious sites, especially in Israel and Egypt, you might need a modest outfit that covers shoulders, arms and knees. Ladies, a shawl is a versatile option you can toss over your shoulders (or hair if need be), use for warmth with your strappy formal night attire or as a blanket on the airplane.
Of course, North Americans taking Mediterranean cruise vacations will need a passport to fly to and from their ship's departure and arrival ports.
Bottom line
The Mediterranean is an amazing region to cruise, and a sailing there is a wonderful introduction to Europe for travelers who have never been. The varied choices of itineraries, cruise lines and ships can be intimidating, but rest assured, you can't really go wrong with any of them. Just know that once you go, you may feel a need to return — either to see a port you loved more in-depth on a land vacation or to sail to the Mediterranean countries you missed on your first go-round.

2. Royal Caribbean International
Royal Caribbean sails several sizes of ships through the Mediterranean with anywhere from 2,700 to nearly 5,000 guests. The ships have an exhaustive list of onboard experiences including nightly live entertainment, specialty dining options, areas to play sports like pickleball, pools, and everything from salsa dancing to jewelry-making classes. 3. Holland America Line
Holland America is marking a major milestone this year celebrating its 150th Anniversary . In the late 1800s, Holland first sailed immigrants looking for a new start from Europe to America. In fact, 10 percent of all immigrants sailed over on what was then called the Netherlands-American Steamship Company. Today, the cruise line hosts Americans, and of course other nationalities, on its ships in the Mediterranean showing off the region’s vibrant and diverse cultures with thousands of unique excursions .
While the experiences off the ship are amazing, passengers also love the delicious cuisine on board . Holland America also has what they call “ Collectors’ Voyages ” allowing guests to book back-to-back trips, so you only have to unpack once, but enjoy twice as many destinations.
4. Celebrity Cruises
Celebrity Cruises describes itself as a “relaxed luxury resort at sea.” The cruise line provides a modern, yet dignified experience on board. Experience distinguished cuisine and cocktails, Broadway-quality shows and live music, plus enrichment and educational options that satisfy even the most inquisitive passenger.
To top it off, Celebrity focuses on exceptional service, leaving passengers wanting nothing more.
5. Norwegian Cruise Line
Norwegian Cruise Line , or NCL, is known for bringing “freestyle cruising” to the industry. That means cruising the way you want, on your schedule, to enjoy your vacation, your way. You can leave your tux at home, there aren’t any set dinner times, and you’re not assigned to dine with the same group every night.
NCL also pays attention to solo travelers with studio rooms specifically designed for them. The set-up helps solo travelers avoid the dreaded single supplement.
Of course, NCL also offers quality entertainment, experiences, and cuisine.
6. Disney Cruise Line
With Disney in the name, you know kids are going to love a Disney Cruise . Stories have been told of parents losing their children to the amazing, kids-only, onboard experiences day after day. While being a kid-at-heart always helps, Disney’s adults-only areas and attention to detail are what keep parents, and even travelers without children, coming back.
It’s obviously not all about Mickey when you’re exploring destinations with such a richness of culture as those in the Mediterranean. Disney’s meticulous service transitions seamlessly to its excursions offered on shore.
7. Oceania Cruises
One of the luxury cruise lines on the list, Oceania Cruises offers personalized service, a refined atmosphere on board, and amazing dining . In fact, they’ve trademarked the phrase “ The Finest Cuisine at Sea .” Famed French Chef Jacques Pepin has been the cruise line’s executive culinary director since 2003 and his attention to culinary detail shows in every dish presented.
Oceania also maximizes its time in port with extended stays, immersive “Go Local” and “Go Green” excursions, and small group sizes. There’s evening entertainment, shopping, and even a casino on board, so you’ll need a variety of outfits to transition from day to night .
Oceania’s ships hold between 684 and 1,250 guests depending on the ship you choose.
8. Princess Cruises
The original Love Boat , Princess Cruises prides itself on its “ Local Connections ” experience — pairing passengers with locals in each port to learn about the region from those who live there. The immersive experience on its Mediterranean cruises continues on board with regional dancers, chefs, and musicians.
There are also plenty of dining, cocktail, and entertainment opportunities on board, including productions from Wicked Composer Stephen Schwartz.

9. Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises is known as a small ship leader in the industry with its vessels holding between a mere 148 and 350 passengers. Their small ships allow passengers time in ports that larger ships can’t access, like Old Town Dubrovnik in Croatia. One unique experience when you sail with Windstar is the opportunity to visit local markets with the ship’s chef. Windstar also partners with the James Beard Foundation, bringing the expertise of some of the most sought-after chefs in the world to your daily dining experience.
Another special treat, Windstar’s Watersports Platform gives you access to the Mediterranean’s beautiful blue water straight from the ship. Kayak, snorkel, stand-up paddleboard, or just jump right in.
Passengers love Windstar’s comfortable elegance and immersive shore excursions.
10. Celestyal Cruises
It may be number 10 on the list, but Celestyal Cruises is number one in the hearts of passengers looking for an authentic Greek cruising experience. The sleek, 2,918-passenger ship claims a culinary “edge” indeed, thanks to 29 onboard dining destinations (overseen by renowned chef and restaurateur Cornelius Gallagher), including main dining rooms dedicated to highlighting regional flavors, such as the Cyprus Restaurant and Tuscan Restaurant. Plus, find unique culinary concepts like Le Petit Chef, which features tabletop 3-D projections of “mini-chefs” from Italy, Spain, France, and Japan who present specialty dishes from their respective homelands. And there’s the Dinner on the Edge open-air venue, where rotating menus, often featuring items sourced from port, are presented on a cantilevered platform floating 13 stories above sea level.
Also based in the Mediterranean from spring to fall in 2023 is the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond , an Edge -class ship that boosts the culinary offerings with a specialty restaurant, Le Voyage, helmed by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, who also serves as the line’s global culinary ambassador.
In port, guests can sign up for special chef-guided market excursions for shopping local markets in locales such as Barcelona and Malaga, Spain, and Livorno and Sorrento, Italy. Finds are later prepared and served by the chef via cooking demos back onboard. Choose from a series of 7- to 11-night Mediterranean Celebrity Edge voyages, running round-trip from Rome or between Rome and Barcelona. Rates on Celebrity Edge from $1,005 /person; celebritycruises.com.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Best mediterranean cruises for culture vultures.
Some travelers head to the Mediterranean for total cultural immersion—whether their interest is art, wine, architecture, or design—and all-inclusive luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises delivers for the culture vulture with carefully curated shore excursions, many of which are included in the cruise fare.
On a 10-night cruise on the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner in July, for instance, you might sip wine at the villa of a family-run farm on Italy’s Amalfi Coast, check out unusual art made from discarded industrial waste in Sicily (part of the line’s new eco-connect series of tours ), or sample Maltese food and wine in Valletta. There’s also the opportunity to shop for crafts in the Italian Riviera, learn about perfume-making in the French Riviera, admire scenery that inspired Vincent van Gogh in Provence, and enjoy tapas and a flamenco show in Spain. Regent recently launched special behind-the-scenes design tours that look at architectural marvels in cities such as Marseilles and Barcelona for a deeper dive into the building of these historic places. The 10-night sailing between Rome (Civitavecchia) and Barcelona on July 13, 2023, starts from $11,299/person; 7-night sailings are from $7,999/person; rssc.com .
SeaDream Yacht Club
Best Mediterranean cruises for beach bums
Do thoughts of sun, surf, and sand along the French or Italian Riviera, Spain, Croatia, or the Greek Isles have your swimsuits crawling out of the drawer to pack themselves? Well, consider hopping between the region’s very best beaches aboard a luxury sailing yacht (billionaire bankroll not required). SeaDream Yacht Club will get you there in style, aboard its intimate 112-passenger SeaDream I or SeaDream II , where you can top off a beach day while luxuriating at a Thai-specialized spa, dining on gourmet cuisine, tippling at the open bar, or sleeping in the line’s signature “Balinese dream beds.” For active types, the ships’ complimentary water-sports marina (lowered when the ship tenders and weather permits) comes equipped with personal sailboats, kayaks, Jet Skis, stand-up padddleboards, and snorkeling gear.
The line runs dozens of diverse Mediterranean itineraries annually: One sample weeklong SeaDream I run between Nice and Rome (Civitavecchia) departing August 19, 2023, follows along the shores of Saint-Tropez, Portofino, Italy, and Monte Carlo (with an overnight stay). Mediterranean sailings take place from May through November (typically from 7 to 11 nights in duration); rates from $5,599/person; seadream.com.
Seabourn extends its emphasis on wellness to port via “Mindful Living” excursions.

Best Mediterranean cruises for spa and wellness seekers
The Mediterranean, with its beautiful beaches and welcoming breezes, is just what the doctor ordered for some rest and renewal. The wellness factor increases further aboard the luxury of intimate, 458- to 600-passenger ships from Seabourn , which schedules dozens of Mediterranean sailings each year (from seven nights in duration, from April into November), most of which feature the line’s signature “Mindful Living” excursions ashore. In Kos, Greece, for example, set out to explore the foundation of modern medicine at the archaeological site of Asklepion, or get your heart pumping with a riverfront bike ride through the orchards and vineyards of Croatia ’s Konavle Valley, outside of Dubrovnik . These wellness-themed excursions are part of the two-year-old “Spa and Wellness with Dr. Andrew Weil” program, a Seabourn exclusive that anchors each cruise with daily yoga, meditation, and fitness classes, along with seminars on mindful living (on topics like healthy aging or spontaneous healing). The holistic approach and teachings stem from Dr. Weil, known as the father of integrative medicine. The onboard spa is a natural extension, where a standard portfolio of treatments (massages, facials, wraps, and beauty treatments) is augmented by alternative therapies like acupuncture, sound therapy, and Chinese herbs. Rates from $3,259/person; seabourn.com .
Get a deep dive into the history of the region with Viking’s educational onboard lectures and discussions.

Viking Cruises
Best Mediterranean cruises for history buffs
With a name like Viking Cruises , it’s no surprise that the cruise line gives a special nod to history on its voyages (its oceangoing ships even have a Viking Heritage Museum onboard, meant to evoke the lives and times of Vikings via replica displays of clothing, weaponry, and more). Through 2023, Viking has three of its ships—the 930-passenger Viking Sky , Viking Mars , Viking Saturn, or Viking Venus —on the popular seven-night “Journey to Antiquities” voyages, on history-rich routes between European capitals of antiquity Rome and Athens. En route, stop off at Naples, Messina (Sicily), Crete, and Kuşadasi, with an overnight in Athens, for excursions that run to spots such as ancient Ephesus, the Minoan Palace of Knossos, Herculaneum and Pompeii, and the Acropolis.
Onboard, a resident historian is available to add color and context to the voyage via talks and roundtable discussions; the library offers history books relevant to the visited ports; and a “cultural curriculum” promises further enrichment via history lectures and destination-influenced programming, such as cooking classes. Rates for the two-week sailing are from $5,498/person; vikingcruises.com .

20 best Mediterranean cruises for a great seagoing getaway
A large number of cruise lines, ships and itineraries operate in the mediterranean. our guide will help you navigate the options.
I t’s no surprise that the Mediterranean is one of the most popular cruise destinations. It’s close enough to the UK to avoid long-haul travel, yet it covers a decidedly different array of cultures and experiences, from sun-kissed coastlines to cities steeped in history. The region is often divided in two, with western cruises visiting the likes of Gibraltar, Spain, France, Italy and Morocco, while eastern Mediterranean itineraries encompass the Greek islands, Turkey and Cyprus. With more ships sailing than ever before, the choice of vessels ranges from sleek superyachts to fun-filled megaships for all the family. These are some of the best cruises in the Mediterranean.

1. Windstar Cruises
Best for unexplored ports of call Windstar steers clear of large ports in favour of tiny harbours and hidden coves that bigger ships can’t reach. The line’s 312-passenger Star Pride can sail up the Guadalquivir, the only major navigable river in Spain , to reach Seville while other vessels have to moor a 90-minute drive away in Cadiz. See a new port almost every day with never more than one sea day.
Best for space The much-loved luxury brand Crystal has been revived under the ownership of A&K Travel Group, which has taken on ocean ships Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, which sail throughout the Mediterranean. The number of suites has been reduced so ships carry 740 and 606 passengers respectively, a drop of 300 and 248. Land experiences curated by A&K include a cookery class at a privately owned villa in Corfu and tour of Cefalu in Sicily, the backdrop of the classic Italian film Cinema Paradiso .

3. ritz-carlton yacht collection.
Best for service Enjoy some of the best service at sea on the Ritz-Carlton superyachts. They were created to replicate the lifestyle and atmosphere of the brand’s upmarket hotels at sea, so there is nearly one crew member to every passenger. Shore excursions reflect the hospitality industry heritage with a visit to Tenerife ’s clifftop Ritz-Carlton Abama to recharge with yoga and relaxation or cocktails on the roof terrace of a five-star Mallorcan hotel built around a 19th-century mansion.
4. Princess Cruises
Best for accessibility This line stands out for its inclusive excursions varying from energetic family fun to fully accessible tours. For a different take on bustling Naples , birthplace of the pizza, search for clues on a guided treasure hunt through Italy’s third largest city. There’s also a dedicated coach tour for passengers in wheelchairs, plus another excursion along wheelchair paths at the ruins of Pompeii, the Roman city buried in ash and preserved after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79.
5. Variety Cruises
Best for the Greek islands This line comes to the fore for an authentic taste of the Greek islands. The fleet of small Greek-owned ships carry 34 to 72 guests and visit the smaller, untouched islands that only local fishing boats usually reach. On Ikaria, known for the longevity of its inhabitants, you can join a cookery class in a village house or, on Levitha, meet members of the one family who live there and run a tiny restaurant for visiting yachts.
varietycruises.com
6. CroisiEurope
Best for a small-ship experience River line CroisiEurope has two ships in its oceangoing fleet. The latest, the 130-passenger La Belle des Oceans, departs from ports such as Nice and will whisk you to the bone-white beaches of the Mediterranean’s fourth-biggest island, Corsica . It switches to sailing the Atlantic in winter, taking you to the sunshine of the Canary Islands on an in-depth itinerary covering six islands. By day, visit the lesser-known isle of La Gomera, home to Unesco-listed Garajonay National Park, and listen to the curious whistling language used by the islanders. By night, look up and discover celestial secrets in the clear skies above La Palma on a star-gazing trip.
croisieurope.co.uk
Best for families From Ajaccio in Corsica to Zadar in Croatia , this line’s encyclopaedic list of ports of call reads like an A to Z. MSC covers the whole of the Med on its big, blingy ships that are family-friendly and come with a staggering choice of embarkation ports. MSC Virtuosa had a starring role in the Channel 5 drama series Good Ship Murder , which was filmed on board the ship that sails from Southampton for the Mediterranean.
8. Star Clippers
Best for tall ships Experience the golden age of sailing — without having to discover new worlds — with Star Clippers. The tall-ship cruise line sails in the Mediterranean with its three recreated clipper ships; Royal Clipper, Star Clipper and Star Flyer. There are chances to explore the Balearic Islands, top up your tan in St Tropez and see the luxury and extravagance of Monaco . Vessels sail under wind power whenever possible and the sight of the creamy billowing sails is a spectacle to behold. Lounge in the bowsprit nets as the ship glides through the blue waters of the Med, or scale the mast to the crow’s nest.
9. Celestyal Cruises
Best for the eastern Mediterranean This line sets sail in the Greek islands and the eastern Mediterranean. It has two vessels, Celestyal Olympia and Celestyal Journey, which carry 1,664 and 1,260 passengers respectively. Expect Mediterranean cuisine and port-intensive itineraries that can include two stops a day — allowing you to pack as many sights as possible into your trip. Celestyal is one of the few lines that welcome tiny sailors from the age of three months — you’ll find plenty of youngsters on summertime sailings.
celestyal.com
10. Costa Cruises
Best for younger children Costa is a fun-loving line that sails in the Mediterranean year-round and attracts an international mix of passengers. Try the 6,500-passenger flagship Costa Toscana for ports of call including Marseilles , Valencia , Ibiza , Naples and Civitavecchia, close to Rome . Youngsters of all ages are made to feel welcome and some ships have dedicated baby pools. Shore excursions from other ships include an activity-filled trip to a Greek farm where kids can meet and feed the animals before burning some pre-bedtime energy at a barbecue party back on deck. Conveniently, there are plenty of different embarkation ports along the way on both its summer and winter sailings.
costacruises.co.uk
11. SeaDream Yacht Club
Best for luxury Make the most of a sun-heated Mediterranean with the watersports platforms on the award-winning luxury cruise with one of two yachts: SeaDream I and SeaDream II — both of which sail here from May to October. Small sailing boats, kayaks, paddleboards and even a floating island are among the grown-up toys carried on board both yachts. Alternatively, chill out on the huge outdoor day beds — just one of the many luxuries on this line where 112 guests are looked after by a crew of 95.
Best for adult-only This adult-only line runs Mediterranean cruises that last from a week up to month or more, with a wide choice of departure points. Viking has a reputation for providing passengers with an in-depth insight into destinations through both its shore tours and on-board lectures by historians and other guest speakers. Unusually for an ocean line, complimentary shore excursions are included in every port — be it the highlights of Athens with a trip to the National Archaeological Museum or a tour of Barcelona with a stop at Gaudi’s famously unfinished Sagrada Familia.
13. Azamara
Best for F1 fans Get trackside at the Monaco Grand Prix on one of Azamara’s voyages that coincides with this world-class sporting event. The line’s French Riviera sailings include the chance to visit this tiny principality, which is a magnet for the rich and famous and, consequently, where people-watching is an irresistible pastime. The glamour continues at the resort of St Tropez — a celebrity hideaway since Brigitte Bardot immortalised the white sands of Pampelonne beach during the filming of And God Created Woman in 1956.
14. Oceania
Best for food Follow in the wake of the world’s great seafarers and explorers with an itinerary departing from Lisbon , the Portuguese capital during the Age of Discoveries. Oceania’s Europe cruises include an itinerary taking in Spain, France, Monaco, Italy and Croatia. This is a line that prides itself on its reputation for fine food and wine, and this theme continues on land; excursions include a market tour in Marseilles , a tapas-making class in Seville and a walk through Naples ’ old town with time to savour calzone (folded pizza), a Neapolitan speciality.
15. Marella Cruises
Best for Adriatic itineraries Get to know the Adriatic with Marella. You can sail to Croatia ’s headline city of Dubrovnik , just-on-the-radar Kotor in Montenegro and enjoy shore tours to Cetinje, once the smallest European city and known as the “Valley of Gods”. Then there’s Venice , where you can tick off the classic sights of St Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge on a tour, topped off by a gondola ride. All ships have children’s clubs apart from adult-only Marella Explorer 2.
16. P&O Cruises
Best for children The Amalfi coast has attracted a star-studded guest list for decades, seducing Frank Sinatra, Jennifer Lopez and every big name in between with its Unesco-listed charms. Follow in their footsteps with P&O, which will take you on a dizzying drive along those winding clifftop roads. The line offers a wide range of cruise sailings on its adult-only ships Aurora and Arcadia, along with itineraries on child-friendly vessels, including special school-holiday sailings packed with activities to keep mini mariners happy.
17. Celebrity Cruises
Best for Aegean itineraries Sail to Turkey and the port town of Kusadasi to discover the gateway to Ephesus: ancient ruins of a city that was once home to 250,000 people. You’ll also stumble upon the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Celebrity’s Aegean Sea itineraries are steeped in history and other options include marvelling at the architectural masterpiece of the Acropolis in Athens and taking a boat ride to Delos — said to be the birthplace of Apollo.
18. Silversea
Best for style This all-inclusive small-ship cruise line, with its Italian heritage, is the top choice for those who want to sail in style. The Grand Mediterranean itinerary from Lisbon to Athens on Silver Spirit ticks off 34 destinations and 13 countries in 43 days. You’ll wander along the gondola-filled canals of Venice , cruise through the striking Bay of Kotor and drop anchor in Malta with a full day ashore where you’ll hear the boom of the noon gun. Back on board, expect spacious suites, all-inclusive gourmet dining and a staff-to-guest ratio you’ll find hard to beat on any other cruise line.
19. Ambassador Cruise Line
Best for a British vibe Aimed at British cruisers, Ambassador has two ships; the 1,400-passenger Ambience and Ambition, carrying 1,200 guests. Round-trip sailings from Tilbury and Bristol to the Mediterranean call at Naples , with views of Mount Vesuvius and the preserved Roman city of Pompeii, and the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar , where you’ll visit the namesake rock and meet the resident Barbary macaques.
Best for older travellers If you’re looking for a fuss-free sailing, try a no-fly cruise departing from Portsmouth on Spirit of Discovery or Spirit of Adventure. The adult-only line sails throughout the Mediterranean to islands such as Mallorca , Corsica and Sardinia and the culture-rich cities of Lisbon and Barcelona . You don’t need to worry about getting to the airport as cruises include a door-to-door chauffeur service.

Your Guide for the Best Mediterranean Cruises
Updated : February 22, 2024
Michelle Palmer
Table of contents, best time for mediterranean cruises, what to pack for a mediterranean cruise, popular mediterranean cruise ports, mediterranean cruise lines, plan your cruise with aaa.
The best Mediterranean cruises look different depending on your cruise style, so it's helpful to take a few things into account when planning your cruise. First off, think about which ports you want to visit. Cruises to the Mediterranean tend to focus on either the Eastern Mediterranean or the Western Mediterranean. The Western Mediterranean tends to be the most popular for first-time cruises and for first visits to Europe. This region includes port cities in Spain, France and Italy. The Eastern Mediterranean tends to appeal to more seasoned travelers. This region's ports include cities in Greece and Turkey as well as countries that border the Adriatic Sea, Croatia and Montenegro. Less frequent, but still available, are cruises that visit Israel and Egypt.
Next you should consider when to arrive for your cruise. You should plan to arrive at least one night in advance. Sometimes flight delays or other problems out of your control happen on even the most well-planned vacations. By arriving one night in advance, you create a buffer that helps ensure you won't miss your cruise embarkation. You can also purchase cruise insurance to protect yourself from unforeseen problems. If your budget allows, consider arriving a few days before your embarkation date. Many Mediterranean cruises start in cities like Barcelona and Rome, which have plenty of fun things to do.
Lastly, decide on cruise duration. Because of the long flight, I always like to have at least two weeks when I travel to Europe, but you'll have to decide what your schedule and budget allow. At a minimum, I recommend taking a Mediterranean cruise that's at least seven days to make the most of your journey.
Another thing to consider is accessibility. If you or a member of your party require accommodations for mobility limitations, research the available excursions. While cruise ships will typically have accommodations onboard, some European cities have cobblestone streets that are difficult to navigate in a wheelchair and multistory buildings that don't have elevators. Consider speaking to a travel agent who can help you plan.
The best time for Mediterranean cruises can be determined by a few factors — choice of ships and excursions, crowd volume and weather.
Peak season for Mediterranean cruises is summer from May to August. During this period, you’ll have the widest range of ships from most cruise lines, and the most varied options of excursions are offered. However, peak season also comes with the largest crowds in port and the most expensive cruise fares.
Shoulder season is a favorite travel season for people who can be flexible with their travel times and don’t need to wait for spring break or summer break from school. (It can also be a more sustainable way to travel .) Shoulder season for cruises to the Mediterranean is spring and fall — March, April, September and October. These months will have fewer options for ships and excursions compared to the summer months, but the fares are reduced. Crowds are smaller, too, making shoulder season a boon for budget-conscious travelers .
The offseason for Mediterranean cruises is the winter months of November through February. During these months, travelers have the fewest options among cruise lines, ships, ports and excursions. While you might be able to find a cruise during this period, the number of ports options on itineraries decrease and options for shore excursion are limited. The tradeoff is not having crowds, with the exception of holiday markets in December, which are popular throughout much of Europe.
Packing for your Mediterranean cruise may be different based on the ports in your cruise itinerary and shore excursions, but here are some guidelines on what to pack.
Things you'll need for every Mediterranean cruise
- Clothes that can be mixed and matched, so they can be worn again. This will help keep your luggage lighter and more manageable when going on longer cruises.
- Clothing for dinner and onboard events. Check your ship’s dress code and your cruise itinerary for formal nights in case you want to participate.
- Comfortable walking shoes for touring port cities.
- Scarf or pashmina. Not only is a scarf nice to have on a chilly evening, but it also is handy if you are touring any churches on a hot day. Many churches that you may tour on a Mediterranean cruise require visitors to have their shoulders and knees covered before entering.
- Backpack or other bag for use as a daypack while in port.
- Prescription and over-the-counter medications. While ships have an on-site aid center, they do not dispense prescription drugs. Over-the-counter medication is easier to get, but it's simpler to have it on hand already if you start feeling seasick or get a headache.
- Phone, other electronics you want with you, their charging cables and a portable charger.
- Plug adapters for your hotel stay.
Pool and beachside
- Swimwear. Pack one swimsuit if you plan only to use the onboard pool or two to three if you are visiting beaches and doing water activities on your shore excursions.
- Swimsuit coverups for when you leave pool and beach areas.
- Waterproof phone case or pouch. While a near necessity on a Caribbean cruise, it’s an optional item for a Mediterranean cruise if you plan on doing water-based activities and want to keep your phone with you.
Traveling in Spring or Fall
- Pants, long-sleeved shirts, light sweaters and jackets for the cooler weather.
- Umbrella or rain jacket. I prefer a rain jacket because I’m less likely to lose it, but choose whichever works best for you as these times of year tend to see more rain than summer.
Shore Excursions
- Water shoes for water-based activities.
- Bike helmet. Helmets are typically provided on bike tours, but you may prefer to have your own helmet if you plan on doing any mountain biking or other such activities.
- Collapsible trekking poles. If you are an avid hiker and plan to do so on any of your shore excursions, consider packing your trekking poles.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is not only a stop on many Mediterranean cruise itineraries but also a frequent embarkation or disembarkation port. If you're excited about seeing Barcelona and the idea of spending the day there just doesn't seem like enough, consider starting or ending your cruise here, so you can spend a couple extra days visiting the Spanish city.
Top things to do in Barcelona on a shore excursion include tours to see Gaudi's art nouveau architecture, the Picasso Museum, culinary tours and cooking classes. You can also find tours where the highlight is visiting FC Barcelona's stadium, a bucket-list item for many soccer fans.
Cannes, France
Most people in the U.S. who have heard of Cannes probably know it from the Cannes Film Festival, but it’s also a popular Mediterranean cruise port. With a few villages close by, beautiful scenery, fancy shopping districts and rich history, it’s no wonder that cruisegoers enjoy this port of call. Fans of old Hollywood will love seeing sights featured in the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock film “To Catch a Thief” starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant. For those who want to spend time shopping, be sure to book an excursion that gives you time to stroll the pedestrian-only zone on rue Meynadier that features boutiques and art galleries carrying luxury goods. If you wish to travel out from the port, book an excursion that visits villages such as Grasse and tour the perfume factory Fragonard Perfumery, or head to Fayence, Seillans or Anibes, or even the Principality of Monaco.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is a historic walled city that is very walkable, so if this is a stop on your Mediterranean cruise, you can opt for touring the city on your own or booking a shore excursion. If traveling during the summer, the beach offers activities from lounging and swimming to kayaking. For those more interested in history, walking tours offer an insight into Dubrovnik's top sights.
Top things to see in Dubrovnik include the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries that date to the 14th century, the Pile Gate and Rectors Palace. Walking tours atop the city walls are also a popular activity. Fans of the TV show "Game of Thrones" will be delighted to find that there are tours focused on taking travelers to the TV show's film locations in Dubrovnik.
Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul is a city with beautiful architecture and culture. Many cruise excursions include a mix of the city’s top sites such as the Blue Mosque (aka Sultan Ahmed Mosque), an example of gorgeous architecture featuring spires and domes. Plan ahead if you visit the mosques, as women typically are required to cover their heads with a scarf, and everyone must have covered shoulders and take their shoes off before entering. In addition to the religious buildings, there are the museums — The Great Palace Mosaic Museum, Hagia Sophia, and the Turkish and Islamic Art Museum. Many excursions also include a visit to the Grand Bazaar, a shopping hub that contains thousands of stores. Purveyors sell spices, produce and other foods as well as clothing, rugs and more.
Rome, Italy
Rome is a popular destination with its mix of ancient and religious sites, including Vatican City, as well as delicious food and cultural offerings. You'll want to plan ahead because the actual city of Rome is about an 80- to 90-minute train ride from the port city of Civitavecchia. Budget-minded travelers may be inclined to book shore excursions on their own to save money, and if this is you, you may want to reconsider. With the heavy traffic in Rome that frequently causes long travel delays, even the best planners may arrive back at the ship late. Ships only delay embarkation for passengers on excursions booked through the cruise line.
If this is your first time, you’ll likely want to see some of the top things to do in Rome , and the cruise line excursions will not disappoint. Many include transportation and tickets to a variety of site like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain as well as the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Other excursions that may appeal to return visitors include tours of Civitavecchia or a pasta-making class.
Santorini, Greece
Santorini is a beautiful island in Greece, but it can get crowded when more than one cruise ship is in port. It’s best to plan ahead to ensure you can get up to the city of Oia and see the sights on your list if touring on your own. Shore excursions may include visits to wineries complete with wine tastings accompanied by an assortment of breads, meats and cheeses. There are also ouzo tastings as well as sightseeing in the villages on the island of Santorini. The picturesque, whitewashed buildings and the black sand beaches make this a favorite port for many visitors. If you wish to avoid the crowds or just spend more time in the water, catamaran tours sail around the island, offering a chance to swim (if traveling when temperatures allow) and view the beaches and caldera.

Flannels or FlipFlops Travel Blog contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. See my disclaimer for more information.
Are you wondering about the best time to Cruise the Mediterranean? You’ve come to the right place!
I am a travel advisor and cruise specialist with extensive experience in cruising multiple times. In this comprehensive guide, I will help you navigate the world of Mediterranean cruises and determine the best time to embark on this unforgettable adventure.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or a first-time cruiser, understanding the ideal timing for your Mediterranean voyage is crucial for a remarkable and memorable experience.
Why Choose a Mediterranean Cruise?
Before diving into the best time to embark on a Mediterranean cruise, let’s explore why this region is a top choice for travelers. The Mediterranean offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, stunning landscapes, and diverse cuisines.
From the sun-drenched Greek islands to the romantic coastal towns of Italy and the captivating beauty of Spain and France, the Mediterranean is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.
You may hear Mediterranean Cruises also called other names, as cruise lines sometimes name the itineraries after one of the smaller seas that make up the Mediterranean Sea.
You may hear Agean Itineraries which include Greece and Turkey, or Adriatic itineraries which encompass Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro.
Rest assured, these are all “Mediterranean” cruises, as are cruises that visit Nice France, and Portugal.
And what better way to explore this captivating region than aboard a luxurious cruise ship?
Understanding Mediterranean Seasons
The Mediterranean region experiences four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each season brings its own unique charm, climate, and set of considerations for travelers.
Let’s delve into the details of each season to help you determine the perfect time to embark on your Mediterranean cruise.
Spring in the Mediterranean (March to May)
Springtime in the Mediterranean is a delightful season marked by pleasant temperatures, blooming landscapes, and fewer crowds.
The weather is generally mild, making it an ideal time for outdoor excursions and sightseeing.
Cruising in the Mediterranean during spring offers the advantage of comfortable temperatures, allowing you to explore ports of call without being overwhelmed by summer heat.
Plus, the vibrant flowers and blossoming landscapes in the late spring add an enchanting touch to your voyage.
✅ Tips for Spring Cruising:
- Pack layers of clothing to accommodate varying temperatures throughout the day.
- Research local festivals or events taking place during your cruise to enhance your cultural experience.
- Take advantage of shore excursions that highlight the region’s natural beauty, such as visiting the Amalfi Coast or exploring the French Riviera.
Summer in the Mediterranean (June to August)
Summer is undoubtedly the high season for Mediterranean cruises. The weather is hot and sunny, perfect for sun-seekers and beach enthusiasts. The summer months offer extended daylight hours, allowing for longer exploration of the ports of call.
It’s worth noting that summer cruises can be busier and the fares will have higher prices due to the high demand.
However, if you enjoy a lively atmosphere, bustling markets, warmer water temperature, and vibrant nightlife, a summer Mediterranean cruise may be the perfect fit for you.
Tips for Summer Cruising:
- Book your cruise well in advance to secure preferred cabins and itineraries.
- Stay hydrated and use sunscreen to protect yourself from the strong Mediterranean sun.
- Plan shore excursions early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day.
Autumn in the Mediterranean (September to November)
Autumn brings cooler temperatures and a more relaxed ambiance to the Mediterranean. The summer crowds have dissipated, allowing for a more intimate and immersive experience.
The landscapes transform into shades of red and gold as the trees change colors, creating a picturesque backdrop for your cruise. Autumn also presents a unique opportunity to witness local festivals, harvest celebrations, and wine tastings in the Mediterranean’s renowned vineyards.
If you prefer a quieter experience with pleasant weather, autumn is a great time to set sail.
Tips for Autumn Cruising:
- Pack a mix of lightweight and warmer clothing to accommodate changing temperatures.
- Research local harvest festivals or wine events in regions like Tuscany or Provence.
- Take advantage of fewer crowds to explore popular attractions and historical sites at a leisurely pace.
Winter in the Mediterranean (December to February)
While the winter months may not be the most popular time in the Mediterranean cruise season, it offers a different perspective on the region.
The temperatures are cooler, but still mild compared to many other destinations. Winter cruises in the Mediterranean often focus on cultural exploration, allowing you to visit iconic historical sites and museums with fewer tourists
Additionally, the holiday season brings a festive spirit to the Mediterranean cities, with charming Christmas markets and captivating decorations.
Tips for Winter Cruising:
- Pack warmer clothing, including a coat or jacket, for cooler temperatures.
- Research local holiday traditions and markets to embrace the festive spirit of the Mediterranean.
- Take advantage of cultural events and performances, such as opera shows in Italy or flamenco dancing in Spain.
Considerations for Choosing the Best Time for a Mediterranean Cruise
Now that we have explored each season’s characteristics, let’s consider a few important factors to help you choose the best time for your Mediterranean cruise:
Weather and Climate
Take into account your personal preferences for temperature and weather conditions. If you enjoy warmer climates and don’t mind crowds, summer might be your ideal choice.
However, if you prefer milder temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere, the shoulder season of autumn or spring may be more suitable.
Budget and Availability
Peak-season cruises tend to be more expensive, so if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn).
Additionally, booking in advance can help secure better deals and ensure availability for your preferred itinerary.
Itinerary and Ports of Call
Research the specific destinations and ports of call you’d like to visit during your cruise. Some destinations might be more enjoyable during specific seasons.
For example, the Greek islands are vibrant and lively in the summer, while Italian cities like Florence and Rome are less crowded in the shoulder seasons.
Cruise line options
It’s important to know that not every cruise line offers year-round itineraries in the Mediterranean. If you have a favorite line, you’ll need to plan your trip around their schedule.
Celestyal, Norwegian, MSC, Viking, and Costa operate in the Mediterranean year-round, although some ports will not be visited during the winter.
Average Temperatures in the Mediterranean
The Mediterranean climate varies depending on the region, but in general, it is mild. Summer temperatures average between 75 to 80°F (24-27°C), while winter temperatures average between 50 to 60°F (10-15°C).

Cruises to the Adriatic Sea
Make your way along island-specked coastlines on one of our Adriatic cruises and marvel at pine-fringed beaches, medieval castles, and terracotta-roofed towns. Experience vibrant, cosmopolitan communities, enchanting seaside villages, and a blend of fascinating cultures.
On cruises to the Adriatic Sea, you’ll enjoy this lovely mélange in the area’s varied cuisine, architecture, and history. Spend balmy summer days on one of the pristine beaches along the Adriatic coastline, or go hiking and wine tasting in the countryside. Uncover the historic sites of the region and wander through captivating city centers. From Italy to Croatia and Montenegro, this region of Europe has a wealth of cultural gems waiting to be discovered.
Adriatic Cruise Highlights
Forts and castles.
Immerse yourself in the history of the Adriatic by visiting its castles, forts, cathedrals, and palaces. In Dubrovnik, stroll along the chunky ramparts that have encircled the city for centuries. In Split, wander through Diocletian’s Palace, still a living community, where the Roman emperor once escaped for rest and refuge. In the handsome city of Trieste, visit the Cathedral of San Giusto Martire, from where you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the Adriatic Sea.
Sparkling Coasts
Discover the Adriatic’s breathtaking coastlines, where sparkling blue water, bleached white islands, and bottle-green pine forests await. From Dubrovnik, hop on the ferry to the wooded island of Lokrum, where you can swim off the rocks in crystal-clear water. In the Bay of Kotor, a deep fjord hemmed in by mountains, swim from small pebble beaches and kayak against a backdrop of tiny islands and coastal villages.
Culinary Delights
Treat your taste buds to new flavors during your cruise around the Adriatic. Taste crisp white Graševina wines, perfect with salty cheese and smoked ham. Try the famous black squid ink risotto and feast on plump peaches and sweet cherries, all grown locally. Enjoy fresh oysters from Ston, near Dubrovnik, and the wide variety of pasta dishes that reflect the proximity of Italy. Learn to drink coffee like a local, sitting in a café for hours while chatting with friends.
Featured Ports
Split, croatia.
The elegant old city of Split has a long history. At its heart is the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace—more a bustling self-contained community than a typical palace—built for the Roman emperor in 4 AD. Wander through the winding alleys and explore the vaulted substructures where musical performances are held. Join a wine tasting, and sample local smoked hams and cheese. Take a trip to Krka National Park, where waterfalls tumble over natural travertine platforms into blue-green pools.
Kotor, Montenegro
Nestled between the Bay of Kotor and the mountains of Mt. Lovcen, Kotor is a lovely old harbor town with a mountainous backdrop and a beautifully preserved medieval center. Explore the Old Town, where al-fresco cafés line sunlit squares. Step into the quirky Cats Museum, which is full of all things feline. Climb the ramparts that snake over the hills behind the city for awe-inspiring views over the rooftops and the long Bay of Kotor.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
Between Italy and Montenegro, you’ll find the spectacular city of Dubrovnik, a heavenly coastal city in Croatia that has risen to the top of many travelers’ bucket lists. Walk around the historic old city walls, where you’ll see unparalleled views of Dubrovnik’s terracotta-roofed buildings and shimmering Adriatic beyond. Explore the area’s forts and monasteries, and take the aerial tram up craggy Mount Srd for the best view of the tangled streets of the old town.
Adriatic Cruise Itineraries
On a cruise to the Adriatic Sea with Celebrity Cruises, choose from seven to 11-night itineraries that depart from Barcelona, Rome, Athens, and Ravenna (Venice). Cruise between April and November and visit ports of call such as Dubrovnik, Trieste, Kotor, and Split.

Best Mediterranean Cruise for Couples
The Mediterranean has been on our bucket list for quite some time now. And we were fortunate enough last year to check that one off our wishlist. For right now this is more of an intro post and we will be doing a more in-depth post later that will include different ports to visit as well. So be sure and subscribe for follow os us on social media below to see that next article.
First of all, there are some unique aspects to consider when you are cruising the Mediterranean with your significant other partner that will make the experience all the more unforgettable.
From the beautiful coastlines of Greece and Italy to the picturesque waters of the French Riviera, here are some ways to choose the best Mediterranean cruise, after considering some key factors.
Choosing an Itinerary
For couples seeking a romantic escape amidst the enchanting backdrop of the Mediterranean, selecting the ideal itinerary involves a delicate blend of passion, intimacy, and adventure. Begin by envisioning shared experiences that ignite the flames of romance: perhaps strolling hand in hand along cobblestone streets illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns, indulging in candlelit dinners overlooking the shimmering sea, or reveling in the timeless allure of sunset cruises beneath painted skies.
Consider destinations renowned for their romantic ambiance, such as the picturesque villages of the Amalfi Coast, where cascading cliffs and azure waters set the stage for intimate moments. Alternatively, the Greek Isles beckon with their whitewashed buildings, secluded coves, and breathtaking sunsets, offering a sanctuary for love to blossom.
Opt for itineraries that prioritize leisure and relaxation, allowing ample time for couples to savor each other’s company without feeling rushed. Look for cruises that offer secluded beaches , private excursions, and onboard amenities designed for romance, such as couples’ spa treatments or gourmet dining experiences.
Furthermore, consider incorporating special touches to enhance the romantic ambiance, whether it’s booking a private balcony cabin for intimate moments overlooking the sea or arranging surprise activities like wine tasting tours or sunset picnics on secluded beaches.
Ultimately, the perfect itinerary for couples is one that fosters connection, sparks romance, and creates cherished memories to last a lifetime. So, set sail together on a voyage of love, and let the Mediterranean’s timeless beauty be the backdrop for your romantic escapade.
Some popular Mediterranean cruise destinations for couples are the Adriatic Sea, the Dalmatian Coast, Italy including Rome and Venice,Cyclades or the Aegean Islands, Corsica and Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands.
Best Time to Cruise the Mediterranean
Choosing the best time to cruise the Mediterranean depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and activities. Generally, the Mediterranean cruise season runs from April to October, but here’s a breakdown to help you decide:
- Spring (April – May): This is a great time for cruising if you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. The weather is usually pleasant, with blooming flowers and lush landscapes. However, the sea might still be a bit chilly for swimming, and some attractions might not be fully operational until later in the season.
- Summer (June – August): Summer is peak season for Mediterranean cruises. The weather is hot and sunny, perfect for swimming and beach activities. However, this also means larger crowds at popular ports of call, higher prices, and potentially scorching temperatures in some areas. Be prepared for more crowded tourist sites and book excursions and accommodations well in advance.
- Fall (September – October): This is another excellent time for cruising, especially if you want to avoid the peak summer crowds but still enjoy warm weather. The sea remains warm for swimming, and the landscapes may feature autumnal colors. Prices may drop slightly compared to the peak summer season, and you’ll likely encounter fewer tourists at popular attractions.
Keep in mind that the Mediterranean region is vast and diverse, so weather patterns can vary significantly depending on your specific itinerary. Also, consider factors such as local festivals and events that may influence your cruise experience. Ultimately, the best time to cruise the Mediterranean depends on your preferences for weather, crowds, and budget.
Which ship to Choose
Choosing the right cruise ship for your Mediterranean adventure depends on several factors including your budget, preferred amenities, itinerary, wether you want a luxury cruise and personal preferences. Here are some considerations to help you make the decision:
- Cruise Line Reputation: Research different cruise lines and their reputation for Mediterranean cruises. Some popular options include Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises. Each line offers a different atmosphere and onboard experience, so choose one that aligns with your preferences.
- Itinerary: Look for a cruise itinerary that includes ports of call and destinations you’re interested in exploring. Some itineraries focus on specific regions like the Western Mediterranean (Spain, France, Italy) or the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Croatia, Turkey). Consider whether you prefer a more culturally immersive experience or if you want a mix of beach destinations and historical sites.
- Ship Size and Amenities: Decide whether you prefer a large mega-ship with a wide range of onboard amenities like water parks, Broadway-style shows, and multiple dining options, or if you prefer a smaller, more intimate ship with fewer crowds and a more personalized experience. Larger ships often offer more entertainment and dining options, while smaller ships may provide a more relaxed atmosphere and easier access to smaller ports.
- Budget: Consider your budget and what’s included in the cruise fare. Some cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages that include meals, beverages, and shore excursions, while others may charge extra for these amenities. Take into account additional expenses like gratuities, onboard activities, and souvenirs.
- Cabin Type: Decide what type of cabin you prefer, whether it’s an interior, ocean view, balcony, or suite. Balcony cabins are popular for Mediterranean cruises because they offer stunning views of the coastline and easy access to fresh air.
- Reviews and Recommendations: Read reviews from past cruisers and seek recommendations from friends or travel agents who have experience with Mediterranean cruises. They can provide valuable insights and tips to help you choose the right ship for your vacation.
Ultimately, the best cruise ship for you is one that meets your preferences, budget, and desired itinerary for your Mediterranean adventure. Take your time to research and compare options before making a decision.
