Buy a Jetta, Get a Bike: The 1990s VW x Trek Collab

The 1996 Jetta Trek Limited Edition Sedan started under $16,000 and came with either a five speed manual or four speed automatic. The VW Trek bike came with 21 speeds and custom seat, handgrips, and special graphics: a dude on a multi-colored rocket, orbiting the VW logo, and holding…something?

Details on the bikes are a bit harder to find. The 1996 ones had a steel frame, but this one has an aluminum frame, which may be the 1997 version. The OCLV on the rocket stands for Trek’s patented carbon fiber, but it’s unlikely that there’s any of it on this bike. A few parts had been replaced in the past twenty years, including the saddle (which also would have had that rocket boy logo), but it still has the original VW hand grips.

It’s definitely in better shape than some of the Trek Edition automobiles out there: Junkyard Gem .

Update: It’s 2022, and someone is selling a never-used VW Trek bike and branded gear in NJ.

Bike Specs for Limited Edition Jetta Trek Mountain Bike

In the late 1990s the Volkswagen car company partnered with the Trek bicycle company to offer a car-bicycle combo. The Limited Edition Jetta Trek, complete with a mountain bike, was only offered for a few years, but the bikes and the cars are still out there. If you're thinking of buying a Jetta Trek mountain bike, you can expect it to be a bike with middle-of-the-road quality.

Frame Differences

The Jetta edition Trek mountain bike looks much like the frame you'll find on a late '90s 850 model Trek bike. The Trek frames were an aluminum alloy frame, with a fork made from double-welded chromoly. That type of fork made it slightly lighter. The bike doesn't come with rear or front suspension, so the forks are also made from chromoly steel. The frames came in five sizes.

The Jetta Trek's brakes were made by the Shimano company. They're the Altus-style brakes in the cantilever style, meaning the two sides of the brake are attached to their own pivot point. This is a common style of brake for thick tires, as mountain bikes typically have.

Shifting and Drivetrain

The bike's shifters were SRAM grip shift ESP 500 models and are the roll type, meaning you'd be able to roll the shifter on the handlebars either forward or backward with a flip of the wrist. The bike has 21 gears. Trek's 800 series models had Shimano-brand sealed mechanism rear hubsets and aluminum-sealed front hubsets.

Other Features

Since the bike hasn't been made in a long time, the tires may have long been replaced on any bikes you find for sale. The originals, however, were Big Kahuna brand tires that were 26 inches wide and 2.1 inches thick. The bikes were purple in color and had a VW logo on the hand grips as well as on the seat.

1997 Volkswagen Jetta Trek

If an effort to bolster slow sales in the 1990s and rebrand itself as a fun-loving alternative to the rest of the modest budget alternatives, Volkswagen rolled out a new marketing campaign and several special editions of the popular third-generation Golf and Jetta. Probably the most famous is the Harlequin, but there was also the Jetta GT and the Wolfsburg Edition. But the ones that really struck a cord with college students were the K2 and Trek editions, as they came not only with your Fahrvergnügen driving experience, but something to do when you got there as well.

In the case of the Trek Edition, you could get alloy wheels, front fog lights, special interior trim, a sunroof, and a rear spoiler. But the most important part of the package was of course the Trek mountain bike that came mounted to the roof rack. It was a silly marketing gig for what was neither the best car nor the best mountain bike available, but it was fun and cool. And today, it’s pretty rare to find them still attached to one another:

1997 Volkswagen Jetta TREK edition. Special TREK bicycle model. Comes with original Jetta Trek roof rack with original TREK VW bicycle, ski rack with skis and TREK VW mountain bike jersey L. New timing belt, water pump, tries, brakes, shocks, control arms and radiator. Has 131K miles. Clean inside and out. AC works good. Needs heater core. If you like older VWS and bikes, this is a unique collector car.

The Cool White exterior looks in decent shape and is set off nicely by the “Flyer” five-spoke wheels, and the GLX-style spoiler, blacked-out tails, and fog lights help to make these otherwise basic Jettas feel a bit more special. The interior has the signature Trek-logo sport seats and a few other nice options. But the big deal is that the Trek bike is still there. I say ‘big’ in that it doesn’t really matter, but is notable and pretty rare to find. You won’t win any beauty contests, races, or trophies with this car. But if you want a talking point at the next Radwood show and you’re on a tight budget, here’s your ride. This one should change hands for short money and is an interesting footnote in 90s VW history is cheap to buy and run. And when it breaks down….well, it comes with a back-up plan.

Junkyard Find: 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Trek Edition

Back in the 1990s, Volkswagen and Trek Bicycles got together for a co-branding deal that shook the world (if you define “the world” as “a couple of zip codes in Marin County “): Golfs and Jettas with sporty-looking upholstery, roof racks, and matching Trek bikes! 15 years later, all but the most fanatical VW and/or bicycle zealots have forgotten the Trek Limited Edition VWs, which makes this an especially rare Junkyard Find.

The snazzy wheels and bike rack are long gone from this example, found in a Denver self-serve yard last week, but it’s still an even rarer find than a genuine Etienne Aigner Golf .

Rather than the scenes depicting drunk 350-pound dudes blasting seagulls with shotguns in the liquor-store parking lot that one will find embroidered into the upholstery of the super-rare Bakersfield Sportsman Edition Ford F-150 from the same era, the Trek Edition Jetta’s seats feature healthy stick-figure VW drivers doing healthy aerobic activities. There’s basketball, running, and— of course— bike riding.

The upholstery in this car smells worse than the Spandex undies of the winner of the Death Ride , but a good cleaning might render it suitable for use in a Trek Jetta restoration.

• Wjtinfwb I used to and it was a favorite pastime. Spending a few hours and you had tangible evidence of the fruit of your labor. I was still doing it myself when I bought a new '87 Suburban in Dk Cherry Red. It looked spectacular when clean and I loved spending the time to do it. My wife had a metallic gray Sebring convertible that also really popped after a few hours labor. But age crept in, kids came along, lawns needed to be mowed, etc. The Suburban gave way to a black Ford Excursion that was just too big (in and out) to do in a reasonable time. So I didn't do much for about 20 years. Still have the Excursion, it sits outside and really needs a professional job. I got a quote of 3-4k and 3 days to do it. No way. I just got a new Bronco, it's small enough to do wash and detail in about 2 hours and looks great after the time investment. And like others, I've been ripped off so many times that I'll just ignore it until it gets so bad I either do it myself or get a recommendation on someone trustworthy.

Does anyone know or those with a Jetta Trek have power mirrors that were heated? I know some came with power mirrors, but I just want to see if they have the heated option as well? Thanks

Re: Jetta Trek Edition (wrdvento) all MK3 power mirrors should be heated, that's the impression i've been under at least. i have a 97 golf trek, no painted mirrors (mine are manual though) my mother's 97 golf K2 has power/heated mirrors. a 97 trek should have: alloys, sideskirts, smoked taillights, fuba antenna, trek big bolster seats, silver face gauges, fog lights, leather shift knob and steering wheel, and on a jetta a rear spoiler. sunroof optional, power mirrors might have been an option, or just standard on the jetta? the 96 trek didn't have nearly that many options, and the easiest way to tell which it is is the badge on the back (providing it has one) the 96 was a sticker, the 97 was the red badge. jettas were 96 and 97, golfs 97 only. colors varied between years too. i guess that's a lot more than you were asking for, but just figured i'd give you some more info http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Sport Sleeper

So, my wife has never owned anything but a VW. When her '88 Fox GL wagon finally went over the hill, we bought this car, and we love it. The Trek edition is beautiful with the flat 5-spoke 14" rims and the rear deck lid spoiler. Keep wax on it and the Fiesta Red will shine forever. The 2.0L SOHC 8V engine is fantastic. Don't let the uninspiring 115hp fool you. It's the 122lb/ft of torque that makes this car fly. You want a 5-speed. Throw on some Koni adjustable shocks/struts and you've got a European sports sedan.

Jetta Trek...What an amazing car.

I purchased my 97 VW jetta from a private party. It is my first car. I have had it for just over a year now and have put about 5000 miles on it since purchase. This car runs great, very reliable and always fun to drive. Everywhere I go I turn heads, because the car is in such good shape and just a sight to see. I would reccomend a 5 speed VW jetta (esp Trek) to anyone looking for a dependable car with great handling, a smooth ride, and more power than you would espect from a normal 4 cyl. car.

Fun,fast,zippy 4 banger

Good little car. plenty of power and torque for a 2.0 gas engine. great gas econmy 30+ mpg. sporty handling.plenty of room for a small car. now for the cons. not that good in bad weather. cheap plastic parts. power windows have lots of problems. expensive repairs if you have a shop do them. traded in with 170K miles due to bad rust on body but she still run great.

Fun to drive, but not fun to own

We bought our Jetta Trek new in 1997. We've had three of the power windows go out (at 26,000, 30,000, and 34,000 miles), replaced the clutch twice, replaced the brakes three times, replaced the battery four times, replaced both our power front door locks, and now our alarm arms itself at random while we are driving the car. VW customer service also leaves much to be desired. I thought I would love this car, and to be fair it is fun to drive, but I will never buy another VW because of all the problems we've had with the car and customer service.

This car will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first. I love the interior but the cup holders are not good. I have had issues with window motors and transmission but I have recked it two times and its still getting me around with out issues at 130k. Overall this is a nice car and its design is very sporty.
