It's a drill every UAE resident goes through every two years, or maybe three, depending on the type of visa. While most of us remember the month when our residence visa is scheduled to expire, we don't usually remember the date. Then, as the month approaches, it's common to flip through the pages of the passport to check the visa validity.

But we don't always carry our passport with us, do we? So what should we do then? All you need to check your residence visa validity is your passport number and the passport expiry date. So you're good even if you have a photocopy of your passport, or a scanned version saved on your phone.

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship provides this service through its website. A resident can enter passport information to verify if visa is still valid and can check whether the issued visa is authentic or not. Residents can also cross-check the validity of visa through this official government website.

Here's a step by step guide to track the visa validity using your passport:

  • Step 1: Visit this link - https://smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity
  • Step 2: Select the 'Passport Information' radio button.
  • Step 3: Select either 'residency' or 'visa'.
  • Step 4: Enter passport number and passport expiry date.
  • Step 5: Enter nationality from the dropdown on the right. A corresponding number will appear on the box on the left.
  • Step 6: Select the captcha check box and click on search. The page will now display your visa details along with date of expiry.

How we make decisions

We check your application and supporting documents to make sure you have sent us everything we need to make a decision.

The time it takes to process your application depends on the visa you apply for, your circumstances and the information you supply with your application. If your application is not complete you may have to wait longer for a decision about your visa.

When you applied, you set up an online account with us. You can log in to find out if we need more information from you and other information about your application's progress.

You do not need to do anything else once you submit your application. We will contact you if we need more information from you.

Logging in to your account

Find the visa that you applied for and use the 'Apply Online' button to log in to your account.

New Zealand visas

For some of our most popular visas, you can also use the log in link at the top of any page on this site and select the type of visa you applied for.

Visitor visas, Accredited Employer Work Visa or or 2021 Resident Visa

You can check your application status by logging in to Immigration Online using your RealMe ® account. On the 'My Visas' tab go to the 'Submitted applications' section and check the 'Status' column. You can also find out more detail on the progress of your application by selecting the 'view application progress' link.

The 'view application progress' link is only available for applications that were submitted after 30 July 2023. Applications submitted before this date display a status in the 'Status' column, but they do not have a 'view application progress' link.

For more information on application statuses, check the following:

We have received your application and it will start moving through our processing system.

Preparing application

Your application has been entered into our system and we are confirming the details you have supplied.

We will confirm your identity and check the documents you have submitted. We may contact you to ask for other documents or information. The status in your online account will be updated to tell you what we need.

The status will still show until we have received the documents, checked them and entered them into the system. This can take some time, so do not worry if your status does not update after you submit your documents.

Waiting on you to provide travel documentation

This usually means we need you to supply travel documentation to support your application.

We have a temporary measure in place where we are only requesting temporary visa applicants provide high-quality scans of their passport, and not to send their physical passport. You will have received a letter advising you of this. That status will still read ‘Waiting on you to provide travel documentation’, even if no physical passport was requested.

Waiting on your supporting partner

This means we need your supporting partner to supply their completed sponsorship form.

Waiting on your sponsor

This means we need your sponsor to supply their completed sponsorship form.

Why some applications are processed faster than others

Gathering information

Your application details and documentation are almost ready for assessment. We will share your application with other agencies and our health team to confirm your details, where required. This is when we may need any medical information, so we may contact you to ask for a medical examination.

Waiting on you to provide medicals

This means we need you to complete a medical examination.

This status will still show until we have received the information, checked it and confirmed it has been entered into the system. This can take some time, so do not worry if your status does not update after you submit your documents.

Under assessment

Your application and all your documents are ready to be assessed, so we can make a decision whether to approve a visa or not.

Your application will be assessed, but this might not occur immediately. The time it takes to assess applications depends on how many other applications we have received and are assessing.

During this stage, we may contact you if we need any further information.

For AEWV applications based on a reused job token, we will generally only start processing an application when your current AEWV expiry date is within the next 9 months, or as our processing capacity allows.

Further information required

This means we need more information from you before we can make a decision on your application. There will be a letter in your dashboard explaining what we need.

This status will still show until we receive a response and we confirm that no further information is needed. This can take some time, so do not worry if your status does not update after you submit your documents.

Withdrawal requested

You have asked to withdraw your application. Your request is waiting for review before it can be completed.

Your application has been withdrawn. You will receive confirmation of this through your Immigration Online account.

Your application has been approved. You will receive your eVisa and information related to your new visa will be added to your Immigration Online account.

Your application has been declined. Your Immigration Online account will have details on why your application has been declined.

This advice also covers family members included in a 2021 Resident Visa or Visitor Visa application. It does not cover Group Visitor Visas or family members of Accredited Employer Work Visa applicants. For information on checking the status of these applications, see other visas below.

Student visas, other work visas and group visitor visas

Log in using your RealMe® account. If your application's status is 'Submitted' it is ready to be processed. If we need more information, we email you to let you know that we have attached a letter to your online account.

We aim to process applications as soon as possible. At very busy times it may take longer for us to make a decision about your application.

NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)

Some visitors and transit passengers need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before they travel to New Zealand. If you have requested an NZeTA you can check its status.

Check your NZeTA status

Working holidays

After you have logged in to your account, select 'My application' from the right-hand side of the page. Once you've selected this, the status of your application displays.

If your application shows:

U.S. Visa Status Check Online

Tracking your U.S. visa application status is simpler than ever. It’s natural to feel a bit worried, not knowing if your United States visa is approved or still being processed, but with the tips in this article, you’ll find it out effortlessly.

Fill me in

We'll break down the steps, helping you navigate the online platform of the government to do a quick U.S. visa status check.

Whether you're a prospective traveler, student, or worker, this introduction sets the stage for valuable insights into managing your U.S. visa application and checking the status with ease.

Decoding the U.S. Visa application status

It’s now possible to check the status of your U.S. visa online for your convenience. The “U.S. Visa Application Status” refers to the current state of an application for either an immigrant or non-immigrant visa to the United States.

It indicates whether the application is pending, approved, or if any additional steps are needed.

Nonimmigrant vs. immigrant visas

When checking this information, you’ll have to select if you applied for a nonimmigrant or an immigrant visa.

A nonimmigrant visa is intended for people seeking temporary stays in the United States, often for reasons like business, work, or educational purposes.

In contrast, immigrant visas are designed for those looking to establish permanent residency in the United States.

The U.S. Office of Consular Affairs website provides comprehensive information about both immigrant and nonimmigrant visa cases.

How to check your U.S. Visa status online

The easiest way to check the status of your U.S. Visa application is using the website: CEAC Status Check .

CEAC means Consular Electronic Application Center. It’s the official website of the United States government concerning all visa applications.

To use the check status option , enter your:

CEAC barcode visa interview location for nonimmigrant (NIV) cases .

Case number for immigrant visa (IV) cases. Apply now

Checking your U.S. Visa status on iVisa

While the CEAC tracker is easy to use, there are other ways to check your visa status effortlessly, including using our website, iVisa .

If you applied for the U.S. B1/B2 Visa or the U.S. ESTA with us, the process requires just a few steps:

Step 1: Start by visiting our page and logging in to your account. You can also download our [iVisa app] for a smoother process.

Step 2: Click on “Track Your Application”.

Step 3: Enter your visa application file number or passport number.

Step 4: Finally, click the “Search” button to check your visa status.

By following this step-by-step guide, you can easily track and understand your U.S. visa application status, without the hassle.

How to check your U.S. Visa status by phone

Alternatively, you can call the National Visa Center for updates on your visa application status.

The CEAC Case Status Tracker in detail

The CEAC Case Status Tracker provides real-time updates on your case throughout the application process. Here's a brief step-by-step guide to making the most of it:

Step 1 : Visit CEAC Website to get started. Remember, this website is part of the U.S. Department of State and is used to create DS-160 and DS-260 visa applications.

Step 2: Depending on the kind of U.S. Visa, you applied for, either a Non-immigrant Visa or an Immigrant Visa, you need to click on ´Check My Visa Application Status´.

Step 3: : Enter your unique case number or immigrant visa (IV) or nonimmigrant visa (NIV) application ID. You might also need to enter your passport number.

Important: A ‘Case Number’ is a number that only the consulate can give you, and it’s usually used for Administrative processing or 221g. It typically shows the date of application first, followed by the corresponding unique number. You need to enter it correctly with spaces. Otherwise, you will see an error in the system.

Step 4: You must enter a CAPTCHA code to verify you’re a human.

Step 5: If everything is entered correctly and no mistakes are made, your visa status will be displayed.

Understanding the U.S. Visa status

When entering the United States as an immigrant or nonimmigrant, you must apply for a visa first if you’re from an eligible country. The application process includes a visa interview as a last step.

Note that a visa IS NOT an automatic permission to enter the country .

A visa merely confirms that a U.S. consular officer has reviewed your application at the corresponding embassy or consulate and has determined that you’re eligible to travel to a port of entry (such as an international airport, seaport, or land border crossing) for a specific purpose.

To understand the right stage of your visa, you must first learn the following concepts

Status for nonimmigrant visa applicants

When you've submitted your online nonimmigrant visa application (DS-160), a “No Status” indicates that your application hasn't undergone processing yet . Depending on your location, it may persist until your scheduled interview or until your application is ready for review.

This stage reflects that your visa case is open and ready for your interview, fingerprinting appointment, and receiving the required documents. After your interview (if applicable), check back in two business days for an update.

Administrative Processing

It means your visa case is undergoing administrative processing , which may last several weeks. Adhere to any instructions provided by the Consular Officer during your interview.

You might need to submit additional information for this part, but once done, and if your visa is approved, it’ll be processed and either mailed or provided to you within two business days.

Your visa is in the final processing stage . If you haven't received it within 10 working days from the online update, contact the consulate or embassy where you submitted your application.

Your visa application was declined for reasons other than those listed in Administrative Processing.

Your case is ready for the scheduled interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consular location . Once you've booked the interview, gather the documents specified in your appointment letter and show up at the consulate on the instructed date and time. Alternatively, wait until you receive notice of your interview appointment.

Your case is undergoing administrative processing, which may take several weeks.

We suggest following any instructions given by the Consular Officer during your interview. Once ready, your application will be processed and mailed within two business days.

Note that some immigrant visas may not be issued if the annual limit for that category has been reached.

Your visa is approved and issued. Depending on location requirements, it will be mailed or made available for pick-up.

This notification happens when your application registration is canceled. Any petition on your behalf is also canceled.

After one year, your case number may be reinstated if you can prove that your failure to obtain an immigrant visa was due to circumstances beyond your control.

To pursue an immigrant visa, the petitioner should contact the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) USCIS to file a new immigrant visa petition.

Expiring Soon

If you don't proceed with your immigrant visa application within one year of initial application, your application registration and any petition will be canceled.

You can reinstate your application within one year by demonstrating that the failure to obtain an immigrant visa was beyond your control.

Return to NVC

Your case number was returned to the National Visa Center (NVC). Contact the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs for further information.

Transfer in Progress

Your immigrant visa case has been transferred to another U.S. Consular office.

Your immigrant visa case is closed. Refer to the letter received at your interview for the next steps.

A closer look at the CEAC status “Refused”

If your visa application was denied or refused, you’ll see the “Refused” status on the CEAC website. It basically means that you haven’t convinced the visa department of why you need the visa.

There could be many reasons, and the consular office will likely indicate the exact reason for denying your visa application.

In some cases, the refused status would be shown online as soon as the interview is done. But in other cases like H1B Visa, it might show up later.

Here are some steps to consider with the “refused” status:

Review the refusal letter : Carefully examine any documents or letters provided during the interview that explain the reasons for refusal.

Understand the reasons : Clearly understand the grounds on which your application was refused. This knowledge is crucial for any potential appeal or reapplication.

Appeal the decision (if applicable) : Some visa denials allow for an appeal process. If applicable, adhere to the designated timeline and procedures for filing an appeal. Follow the guidelines provided in the refusal letter for initiating the appeal process.

Address the issues : If the refusal is due to specific issues, address and resolve those concerns before considering reapplication.

Reapply (if appropriate) : After addressing the reasons for refusal, you may choose to reapply for the visa. Ensure that you provide all necessary documentation and address any concerns highlighted in the refusal letter.

Notice of FY 2025 H-1B Cap Initial Registration Selection Process Completion and Cap Season Reminders

H-1B Initial Electronic Registration Selection Process Completed

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has received enough electronic registrations for unique beneficiaries during the initial registration period to reach the fiscal year (FY) 2025 H-1B numerical allocations (H-1B cap), including the advanced degree exemption (master’s cap). We have randomly selected enough properly submitted registrations for unique beneficiaries projected as needed to reach the H-1B cap and have notified all prospective petitioners with selected beneficiaries that they are eligible to file an H-1B cap-subject petition for such beneficiaries.

Registrants’ online accounts will now show one of the following statuses for each registration (that is, for each beneficiary registered):

  • Submitted:  The registration has been submitted and is eligible for selection. If the initial selection process has been completed, this registration remains eligible, unless subsequently invalidated, for selection in any subsequent selections for the fiscal year for which it was submitted.
  • Selected:  Selected to file an H-1B cap petition.
  • Not Selected: Not eligible to file an H-1B cap petition based on this registration.
  • Denied – duplicate registration:  Multiple registrations were submitted by or on behalf of the same registrant for the same beneficiary. If denied as a duplicate registration, all registrations submitted by or on behalf of the same registrant for this beneficiary for the fiscal year are invalid.
  • Invalidated – failed payment: A registration was submitted but the payment method was declined, not reconciled, or otherwise invalid.
  • Deleted: The submitted registration has been deleted and is no longer eligible for selection.
  • Processing submission:  USCIS is processing your submission. It may take up to 72 hours for all of your case information to show on the case details page. While it is processing, you will be unable to access your draft.

For more information, visit the  H-1B Electronic Registration Process  page.

FY 2025 H-1B Cap Petitions May Be Filed Starting April 1

H-1B cap-subject petitions for FY 2025, including those petitions eligible for the advanced degree exemption, may be filed with USCIS beginning April 1, 2024, if filed for a selected beneficiary and based on a valid registration.

Only petitioners with registrations for selected beneficiaries may file H-1B cap-subject petitions for FY 2025.

An H-1B cap-subject petition must be properly filed at the correct  filing location (see H-1B Form I-129 Filing Location Change to Lockbox section below)   or online at  my.uscis.gov and within the filing period indicated on the relevant selection notice. The period for filing the H-1B cap-subject petition will be at least 90 days. Petitioners must include a copy of the applicable selection notice with the FY 2025 H-1B cap-subject petition.

Petitioners must also submit evidence of the beneficiary’s valid passport or travel document used at the time of registration to identify the beneficiary.

Petitioners filing for selected beneficiaries based on their valid registration must still submit evidence or otherwise establish eligibility for petition approval, as registration and selection only pertains to eligibility to file the H-1B cap-subject petition.

For more information, visit the  H-1B Cap Season  page.

New Fees and Form Edition

On Jan. 31, 2024, USCIS published a  final rule   that adjusts the fees required for most immigration applications and petitions. The new fees are effective April 1, 2024. Petitions postmarked on or after April 1, 2024 , must include the new fees or we will not accept them. Additionally, there will be a new 04/01/24 edition of  Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker . There will be  no grace period  for filing the new version of Form I-129 because it must include the new fee calculation.

What to Know About Sending Us Your Form I-129.

  • We will accept the 05/31/23 edition of this form if it is postmarked  before  April 1, 2024;
  • We will not accept the 05/31/23 edition of this form if it is postmarked  on  or  after  April 1, 2024; and
  • We will only accept the 04/01/24 edition of this form if it is postmarked  on  or  after  April 1, 2024.

We will use the  postmark date  of a filing to determine which form version and fees are correct but will use the  received date  for purposes of any regulatory or statutory filing deadlines.

As a reminder, we recently  announced  a  final premium processing fee rule  that increased the filing fee for  Form I-907, Request for Premium Processing Service , to adjust for inflation, effective Feb. 26, 2024. If we receive a Form I-907 postmarked on or after Feb. 26, 2024, with the incorrect filing fee, we will reject the Form I-907 and return the filing fee. For filings sent by commercial courier (such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL), the postmark date is the date on the courier receipt.

Online Filing and Organizational Accounts

On Feb. 28, 2024, we launched new online organizational accounts that allow multiple people within an organization and their legal representatives to collaborate on and prepare H-1B registrations, H-1B petitions, and any associated Form I-907. Information on organizational accounts is available on the  Organizational Accounts Frequently Asked Questions page.

We also launched online filing of Form I-129 and associated Form I-907 for non-cap H-1B petitions on March 25. On April 1, we will begin accepting online filing for H-1B cap petitions and associated Forms I-907 for petitioners whose registrations have been selected.

Petitioners will continue to have the option of filing a paper Form I-129 H-1B petition and any associated Form I-907 if they prefer. However, during the initial launch of organizational accounts, users will not be able to link paper-filed Forms I-129 and I-907 to their online accounts.

H-1B Form I-129 Filing Location Change to Lockbox

Starting April 1, 2024, H-1B and H-1B1 (HSC) Form I-129 petitions are no longer filed directly with the USCIS service centers. All paper-based H-1B and H-1B1 (HSC) Form I-129 petitions are now filed at USCIS lockbox locations. This includes cap, non-cap, and cap-exempt H-1B filings.

We will reject H-1B or H-1B1 (HSC) petitions received at a USCIS service center on or after April 1, 2024. There will be  no grace period  provided.

USCIS has specific mailing addresses for cases that are subject to the H-1B cap. To determine the correct mailing address, please see our  Form I-129 Direct Filing Addresses  page.

If a petition is filed at the wrong location, we may reject the petition. Rejected petitions will not retain a filing date. If we reject a petition because it was filed at the wrong location, it may be refiled at the correct location, or online. H-1B cap subject petitions may be refiled at the correct location, or online, as long as the petition is refiled during the designated 90-day filing window listed on the selection notice.

No More Pre-paid Mailers

As of March 25, 2024, we are no longer using prepaid mailers to send out any communication or final notices for any H-1B or H-1B1 (HSC) petitions. With H-1B intake now occurring at the lockbox or online, we will not be able to use any prepaid mailers for H-1B or H-1B1 (HSC) filings.

The process of printing and mailing H-1B petition approval notices by first-class mail is fully automated. For petitions filed online, myUSCIS account holders will also receive an email or text message notification in their myUSCIS account when there is a case status change on a case in their account, followed by a paper notice by mail.

Receipt Notice Delays

When we receive a timely and properly filed H-1B cap subject petition, the petitioner (and, if applicable, the petitioner’s legal representative) will be provided a Form I-797, Notice of Action, communicating receipt of the petition. Due to increased filing volumes typically seen during H-1B cap filing periods, there are instances where a paper petition is timely and properly filed by mail, but issuance of the Form I-797 is delayed. If you are a petitioner and have confirmation from the delivery service that the petition was delivered, but you have not yet received a Form I-797 confirming receipt of the petition, you should not submit a second petition. If you have confirmation from the delivery service that the petition was delivered and you then submit a second H-1B cap petition for the same beneficiary, you will be considered to have submitted multiple H-1B cap petitions. This will result in denial or revocation of both petitions.

If more than 30 days have passed since the confirmation of delivery and you have still not received a Form I-797, you may contact the  USCIS Contact Center  for assistance.

If you receive notification from the delivery service, or your tracking information suggests that there may be a delay or damage to the package or that the package was misrouted, you should follow the Delivery Service Error Guidance on the  H-1B Cap Season  webpage.
