12 Astrological Houses – Astrology Lesson 4

1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | 9th | 10th | 11th | 12th

The 12 Houses of astrology are arranged on a circle-shaped chart, or wheel.

Do not confuse the wheel of Houses with the zodiac wheel. They are 2 different wheels.

  • The zodiac wheel is based on the sun’s apparent yearly rotation about our Earth, along the ecliptic.
  • The wheel of Houses is based on our Earth’s 24-hour rotation about its own axis.

The 2 wheels join together at points derived by calculations involving your exact birth time and astronomical birth coordinates.

Then, the planets are described in 2 ways: as being in a zodiac sign , and also as being in a House .

For example, two people may both have a Libra Sun sign, but one may have the Libra Sun in his 12th House, while the other may have his Libra Sun in his 1st house. This could make for two very different types of people.

(Another reason why the popular daily Sun Sign Horoscopes are a bunch of silliness: they are written assuming everyone has their Sun in the 1st House.)

The 12 Houses of astrology are symbolic of the all the departments that make up human life. The planets and zodiac signs will manifest themselves most strongly in the sphere of life represented by the House in which they fall on your chart (and also in the House which they rule; more on House Rulerships below ).

Remember, the houses are not “energies” like the elements or planets, nor do they color the expression of energies like the zodiac signs do. The houses are WHERE these energies are most likely to manifest. The houses are the fields of experience , not the experience themselves.

Notice how the order of the Houses follows the developmental path of a human’s life, from the original impulse of individual being (1st house), to learning what is “mine” and how to use what one owns (2nd house), to learning how to communicate within the limitations set by our environment (3rd house), etc. The following description of the Houses are short and topical, directed at beginners.

The most important houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses. These are called the " angular houses " because their cusps coincide with the 4 special angles: ascendant, I.C., descendant, and M.C.. Planets in the angular houses will influence you the most.

1st Astrological House

The first House is the House of self. This includes self-awareness, the physical body, personality, appearance, personal views on life, self-identity, self-image, early environment, and beginnings; how we initiate, how we’re impulsive. Any planets in this house will greatly influence your personality and how others perceive you.

2nd Astrological House

The second House refers to your own money and possessions, what you value, your hidden talents, sense of self-worth, self-esteem (how you value yourself , instead of describing your personality as in the 1 st House). Possessions include anything a person owns (except the house/home which is ruled by the 4 th House): cars, furniture, clothing, moveable property, investments and securities, etc. The 2nd house specifies how you gain and spend your own money (as opposed to other's money in the 8th house), your attitude towards wealth and material possessions, and your potential for accumulating it/them.

3rd Astrological House

The third House is that of communication, which by extension includes one's immediate environment: siblings, neighbors, short journeys, and all forms of transportation. The 3rd house also includes the intellect, the lower mind (details and small bits of information as opposed to the higher mind in 9th house), thinking patterns, and early education (before college). Communication includes messages, deliveries, gossip, phone calls, visits, reading and writing.

4th Astrological House

The fourth House refers to the home and everything associated with it (both the childhood home & the current home):  family, land, personal foundations (inner emotional security), your roots. Astrologers are divided over whether this house is associated with one's mother or father. What is clear is that a person's upbringing is associated with this House.

On a deeper level, the 4th house is the base of consciousness or the center of our concrete existence. See how the cusp of the 4th house is the I.C., the lowest point on the chart, representative of things below the surface of Earth. Due to that, the 4th house was believed to rule the conditions at the end of life, and graves. As the root or base of your real self, the 4th house rules where you go when you "die" but also where you came from. For those who believe in reincarnation, the 4th house would give clues to your karmic lesson for this lifetime. It shows what karmic baggage you brought with you into this life. Even if you don't believe in reincarnation, you're likely to be surprised by what you find in your 4th house for it may move your soul.

Any planets in the 4th house affect your home life, your emotions, your subconscious, and possibly your relationship with your parents.

5th Astrological House

The fifth House refers to children, creativity, and the pursuit of pleasure. This includes personal interests, love affairs, sports, hobbies, speculation, risk-taking, teaching, drama, creative self-expression, love given, gambling. The 5th house is all about you being yourself and enjoying it.

Romance, dating, love affairs, and sexual relationships are ruled by this 5th house, yet marriage is assigned to the 7th. Why? Because, until very recently, marriage was not entered into for pleasure, for love, nor for personal fulfillment. Marriage was hardly even entered into by choice, but rather for the purpose of raising kids to preserve the values of a particular culture or religion. And these marriages were most often arranged according to class and financial status, a partnership befitting the 7th house.

Nowadays, it's common to marry for love. To avoid confusion, remember: affairs of the heart are in the 5th house, but cooperative partnerships are in the domain of the 7th house.

6th Astrological House

The sixth House refers to daily work, service, diet, health and physical sickness, physical ability to work, employees. This includes volunteer labor, civil service work, caretaking, and mundane daily tasks. The 6th house really involves the quality of your work, the quality of the jobs you perform, as opposed to an actual career (career is represented by the 10th house). Daily mundane tasks include personal hygiene and our method of responding to everyday crises.

7th Astrological House

The seventh House is sometimes referred to as the House of marriage, but it encompasses all one-to-one relationships: marriage, business partnerships, contracts, cooperative relationships, and also divorce, separation, quarrels, open enemies, and law suits.

The difference between the love affairs of the 5th House and love relationships of the 7th is that the 7th House refers to more permanently binding relationships, whereas the 5th House refers to affairs that may be temporary. When the 5th House affair progresses into a serious relationship, we can say that the relationship has "moved into the 7th House."

7th house relationships are about cooperation and sharing, and they generally serve some functional purpose in the larger social community (i.e. a marriage). This is different from a 5th house love affair, whose only qualification is "butterflies in the stomach."

The 7th house includes the way you relate to those closest to you. Planets in this house will influence your manner of relating. They also give clues to issues that arise in your relationships.

8th Astrological House

Simply put, the 8th house is the polar opposite of the 2nd house. Whereas the 2nd rules your own individual possessions, the 8th house rules what a relationship owns (joint finances).

The 8th House is one of the most misunderstood Houses. This is probably because the things represented by the 8th House seem to have nothing in common with each other, or they seem to be negative. This House governs death, regeneration, taxes, inheritances, wills & legacies, sex (the actual act of sex), latent occult ability, joint resources, your partner’s money and possessions, spouse's money, bankruptcy, losses, personal sacrifices, alimony, clairvoyance.

On a positive note, this House is about transformation and healing. But transformation and healing require some type of death, loss, or injury first. This House rules those processes and things by which we transform and become more powerful. Yes, this includes the act of sex.

9th Astrological House

The ninth House refers to philosophy, religion, law, learning, higher education (as opposed to early education by the 3 rd House), ethics, morals, long journeys, travel, foreign countries and interests, spiritual urges, dreams, visions, higher mind, ideas, understanding and wisdom, books, publishing, ceremonies, and rituals. This is the House of big thoughts and big ideas.

9th house "understanding" is more complex than 3rd house "knowledge". The act of "knowing" belongs to the 3rd house because it implies simply the direct contact of a person with something in his environment. Understanding involves the synthesis of known data.

While the 3rd house refers to an individual's need to understand his close and personal environment, the 9th house is an area in which one seeks to discover the significance of larger fields of social existence which one may not experience directly but which his mind may explore through the use of analogy, generalization and abstraction. The 3rd and 9th houses symbolize the 2 polarities of the human mind, the concrete and the abstract.

In summary, the 9th house includes experiences that we encounter when we search for the meaning of things. Whatever expands your field of activity or the scope of your mind – long journeys, contact with other cultures, great dreams, and even experiences with fortunetellers.

10th Astrological House

The tenth House is the House of status, honor, community power, prestige, reputation, and professional career. In our society, this includes financial success, but only as it relates to community power and prestige. It's not about gaining "material stuff" as it is in the 2nd house. The 10th house wants success for the sake of honor and social status.

This house includes social foundations (as opposed to personal home foundations in the 4th), recognition, personal achievements, social responsibilities, sense of duty, authority figures, politicians. This House encompasses the most public areas of one's life, and the career that you grow into, as opposed to daily work and odd jobs ruled by the 6th House.

As with the 4th House, astrologers are divided over whether the 10th House rules one's mother or father. Those that say the 4th House rules the mother, say the 10th House rules the father, and vice versa. What is clear is that the 4th House rules the nurturing, home-body parent, while the 10th House rules the public, success-focused parent (the parent who "wears the pants").

As with the other angular houses, any planets in this house are very important. Planets in the 10th house, the sign on the cusp of the 10th house, and its ruling planet will greatly influence your career and your general reputation in public.

11th Astrological House

The eleventh House is the House of community, large groups, and friends. It refers to memberships, hopes, goals, ambitions, wishes, social groups, associations, humanitarian interests. It also refers to self-realization, liberty, legislation and regulation.

12th Astrological House

This is probably the most misunderstood house of all. The twelfth House refers to the subconscious, the hidden self that exists apart from our physical everyday reality. This includes the unconscious mind, subconscious memory, subconscious habit patterns from the past, mental illness, karmic debts, self-deception, escapism, spiritual realization, limitations, frustration, and ultimately our self-undoing.

On a physical, material level, the 12th house includes things that take us away from everyday life: institutions (such as hospitals, prisons, government offices), places of confinement, secrets, secret relationships, hidden enemies, and self-sacrifice for others. It also refers to sorrow, tribulations, widowhood, grief, funerals, exile, seclusion, bribery, subversion, murder, suicide, kidnapping, and endings.

For those who believe, the 12th house is also considered to refer to the collective unconscious of all humanity.

“Natural” Houses of the Planets & Signs

Each planet and zodiac sign is naturally associated with a House, the House that most corresponds to its archetype. The planet, then, is said to be the “Natural Ruler” of that House, or more often, it’s said to be “at home” in that House.

The House/planet associations were adjusted with the discoveries of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The following table lists the current House rulers, along with the traditional rulers. The traditional rulers are still considered to be co-rulers of that House (along with the new planet that rules the House).

Note: in your own birth chart, the rulers of your houses are determined by the signs that fall on the cusps of your houses. However, the natural rulers, listed here, give a subtle influence.

Table of Natural Ruling Planets of Each House

Take Note:  The qualities of the zodiac signs are not exactly the same as those of the Houses which they are associated with. There are subtle differences between the qualities of the signs and Houses. More on the zodiac signs later; but first, learn about the star players, the Planets. See Lesson 5-The Planets .

How to Predict Foreign Travel in Astrology: Concept and Examples

  • By Neeraj Verma

Foreign Travel in Astrology

Vedic astrology, at the very roots and basics, is all about Houses, Signs, and the Planets. All the planets, houses, and signs are connected to different significations of the world. If you take Houses then foreign travel in astrology should be checked from the 3rd house, 9th house, and 12th house. These are the houses for the only houses one needs to see in a birth chart for travel. For seeing travel-related events in a chart you can also consider the 7th and 11th house. However, traveling abroad is long travel so in astrology we will take the 9th and the 12th house. The 9th house is of long journey whereas the 12th house is of foreign lands.

Basics is Important in Astrology

As every time I say – Basics are very important in Vedic Astrology for the advance predictions also. If you want to learn Vedic Astrology and master it don’t leave the basic concepts. So, in this article, we will talk about one of my astrology researches although there are so many combinations of foreign travel in astrology.

Every technique has some unique circumstances and every combination comes from different types of energy combinations of house, planet, and signs. But, some basic concepts of astrology will never change. The 4th house is the house of your homeland, and this house is very important for foreign travel in astrology, or to see abroad settlement. Because until this energy will not allow you to leave the homeland you can’t leave your homeland or the birth country. Here, we have to keep in mind that the 1st house also belongs to your birthplace, and actually, everything belongs to the native. The 12th house is the house of a foreign land or foreign travel in astrology.

Combination for Foreign Travel in Astrology

I have talked about all the concepts related to this in one of the videos on our YouTube channel so for more insight you can visit there also after reading this article. So, we have to take the 4th house first. Mars is the planet that will support us to leave the homeland and you know that’s why Mars is a very important planet for marriage also especially in the female Kundali.

Now, let’s delve deeper into our concept of the technique. The technique is – When Mars is strong and this Mars will make a connection to the 12th, 4th, or 8th house: and, alongside, the 4th house lord and 4th house, Jupiter and Moon will be weak, then person will travel abroad. In the appropriate time activation by the Dasha, transit, or the planets, we will see how the event of foreign travel in astrology comes true.

See the yoga should be activated with the appropriate Dasha sequence at least otherwise this yoga can create a prison-like situation abroad or native will not travel to foreign land.

Let’s take some examples to understand the technique.

How to predict foreign travel in astrology

Take the lagna lord first and you can see that the lord of the lagna lord is in the 12th house of foreign journey. Now, the 4th house is the house of homeland and the lord is Mars only which is situated in the 12th house with exalted Jupiter. Mars is a debilitated planet and this is Neech Bhang Raj yoga in the 12th house.

To get more idea about this example on foreign travel in astrology you can take the reference of this video . Jupiter is also the 8th lord here and Mars is the lord of the house of long Journey which is the 9th house. Venus is the lord of the 12th house from the 4th house that is the 3rd house which shows the exit from the homeland.

All the combinations which are placed in the 12th house, aspected by retrograde Saturn which is the lord of 6th house and the 7th house. One more point can be a concern that I told also in the Basic Astrology class that the Rahu Ketu belongs to a foreign element. You can see Rahu is aspecting the Lagna from the 5th house and sitting in the 9th sign which is the 9th house of Kaal Purush Kundali. This native is female and is well-settled abroad. So, this is a perfect example of travel abroad astrology.

Example 2:

How to predict foreign travel in astrology

In this birth chart you can see that again Mars is in the 12th house. Mars is the lord of 12th and 5th houses. Mars is with Jupiter which is lord of lagna and 4th house. Lagna lord connected to the 12th house shows that person will be connected to some foreign energy. Again Saturn is aspecting the 12th house being the 3rd house lord.

After looking at the 1st example this example is very simple to understand. This native goes abroad for education purposes and in the video suggested to the student that he will be settled abroad with his family you can watch that in the video.

More examples on foreign travel in astrology are in the class video so don’t forget to watch. If you want to join the Basic course in which I am talking about the Planets in all houses, you can join by clicking here https://shatabhishaastrology.com/basic-astrology-course-planets-in-all-houses/

Planetary Combinations for Foreign Settlement Astrology

How It Will Effects on All Zodiac Signs

Planetary Combinations for Foreign Settlement Astrology

Foreign settlement in Vedic astrology can be a dream come true, particularly if you have been working hard to improve yourself outside of your home country. In today’s world, young people want to leave their hometown to establish a stable career and family life.

In the realm of Astrology, all houses, planets, and their combinations have their own significance and a role to play. The attributes and circumstances of everything and anything in life shift as a result of these factors. Planets and houses have such significance in foreign settlement Vedic astrology.

If we look at specific aspects like career, marriage, business, and numerous other dimensions of life, then astrology may play a key role in predicting the possible future. Similarly, the challenges and uncertainties related to a person’s settling abroad astrology can also be analysed through the lens of Indian Vedic Astrology.

Some specific planets and houses have an effect on a person’s chances of going out of the country. For example, we can know if one is going to travel abroad for entertainment, settlement, or business purposes. This is where Vedic astrology foreign settlement, as well as foreign travel horoscopes, comes into the picture.

Let us look at how Abroad Settlement in Astrology can be connected!

Planets Associated With Abroad Settlement in Astrology

There is no unique planet that encourages people to fly internationally or do foreign settlement astrology. The meaning of travelling abroad is ruled by a constellation of planets with specific ownerships.

You may not believe this but sometimes,  travel destinations are based on your zodiac signs.  And you never know where life takes you.

Even then, if a planet is to be chosen as the primary planet for international travel, it is the ‘Rahu.’ Because, by nature and symbolism, Rahu is alien and exotic. When Rahu is in the ninth house (long-distance travel) or the twelfth house (foreign land), the native is compelled to travel abroad.

The other planet is Ketu which is in charge of international travel. Ketu has the power to compel a native to leave his homeland and relocate abroad. When Ketu afflicts the house, the native may  travel abroad  rather than staying in the homeland.

Now, as far as abroad settlement in astrology is concerned, Rahu, Ketu, Moon, and Mars are some of the important planets that help in foreign travel. Besides this, the lords of the significant houses also take part in a major role in settling abroad astrology. One can get permissions associated with a student visa, business visa, or work visa because these planets and certain other combinations with the houses can aid one in foreign travel and settlement in astrology.

There are certain measures that one can take to solve their problems related to foreign settlement Vedic astrology.  Talk To An Astrologer  who can assist you further!

Houses Affiliated With Foreign Settlement in Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology foreign settlement is guaranteed by some houses, which is why when an expert astrologer sees a Kundli, they look for such planets and houses that are more favourable in such cases.

When your foreign settlement is for a short journey, then the 3rd house is involved as per the foreign travel astrology. This  3rd house  is 12th from the 4th house and usually denotes short distance journeys.

The 4th house in the Vedic astrology chart puts emphasis on your motherland or native place. If there is any sort of affliction in the  4th house  then, a person may have a good chance to foreign settlement in Vedic astrology from his/her native place. Also, a highly disturbed 4th house may indicate foreign settlement.

To add further, the  8th house  also functions as a crucial factor. As this house is 12th from the 9th house, it signifies sudden gain in a foreign land like in investments, which in turn increases the possibility of travelling abroad to a foreign land.

The  9th house  specifically heralds long journeys over water. This house provides opportunities for long journeys, as per foreign travel and settlement in astrology, which is why this house is essential in knowing if a person is going to travel out of the country.

The 11th house is affiliated with the fulfilment of wishes. If a person may have a strong desire and get fulfilled, it may be because of a strong  11th house . This is the house for wish fulfilment. Whatever the purpose of travel, the 11th house always remains important in travelling.

The 12th house, again, also plays a major role with respect to Foreign Land and settlement as it points out travel and PR in a foreign land.

Foreign Settlement in Vedic Astrology and Zodiac Signs Related to It

The movable, common, and fixed signs are the three main types of signs.

  • Aries, Libra, Cancer, and Capricorn are all movable signs.
  • Pisces, Sagittarius, Gemini, and Virgo are the common zodiac signs.
  • Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius, and Taurus are the signs of the zodiac that are fixed.

All movable signs have the best chances of foreign settlement astrology, while common signs only travel abroad for a short time. Fixed signs, on the other hand, have a slim chance of settling outside permanently or even temporarily. Furthermore, movable signs with the 12th and 9th Houses get more assistance while settling abroad.

Furthermore, all water signs (Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio) that have their signs in the 9th and  12th Houses  have the best chances of beginning their work outside. Scorpio, despite being a fixed sign, has the ability to fly abroad due to the 9th and 12th Houses in their sign. As a result, star signs have an effect on international travel and career opportunities.

Favourable Planetary Combinations For a Foreign Visa

Certain combinations of houses and planets can lead to going out of your country. Not just this, these houses or planets can also tell as to what house is associated with what particular kind of objective too!

Whatever travelling purpose, it is, in any case, the 4th house and its lord must be affected in a way that it may promote foreign travel. This is because the 4th house is concerned with taking a person away from its native or motherland.

As far as higher studies abroad are concerned, if the lord of the 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th house, and their respective lords make a combination with the 12th house, then the person may get the opportunity to get a Student Visa.

Furthermore, the 8th house indicates Research; hence, if there is any combination of the lord of the 8th house with the 9th and 12th one, the individual may pursue research work in a foreign land. If the Lord of 6th house and 10th house make a combination with the 9th and 12th house, then the probability of the individual to go abroad for work/ job purposes increases.

Travelling abroad is one of the most cherished dreams for a lot of people and for some, it’s a vision to settle there, check if your  chances are high to go to foreign.

If the lord of the 7th and 10th house makes a combination with the 12th house, then the person may go abroad for business-related objectives. If the lord of the 9th house and 11th house make certain interactions with the 12th house, then the possibility of the person to go to a foreign for leisure/tourism purposes also solidifies.

Apart from the houses, planets like Saturn and Rahu, along with their placement in the 12th house, may also indicate foreign travel. Therefore, with such houses, planets, and their specific combinations, an individual may get the opportunity to go abroad, and this can be very much foreseen with the help of settling abroad astrology!

How Can We Know About Vedic Astrology Foreign Settlement Yoga in Horoscope/Kundali?

When several Yogas appear in a horoscope, they cause the native to move from his homeland to a foreign country.

For instance, Rahu’s position in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, and first houses will provide opportunities for the native to travel abroad. If the native’s ninth and eleventh houses are related, he or she will be able to travel abroad.

Between Mercury and the Sun, an arc is formed. The greater the angle, the greater the likelihood of a native travelling abroad. When Ketu afflicts the second, fourth, and seventh houses, the native has the opportunity to foreign settlement Vedic astrology.

Saturn requires the native to go abroad if he or she works in the houses associated with a foreign country. Aside from these planetary combinations, there are plenty of other planets that can lead to effective international travel based on foreign settlement astrology.

Astrological Houses – An Overview

A lesser known area of someone’s birth chart is that of the astrological houses.

People that know a bit about their charts might are aware of their sun signs and maybe some planets , but only people that have had a proper chart analysis done will know about their astrological houses.

If the signs of the zodiac show “how” planets express themselves, the houses of the natal chart reveal “where” these energies of the planets play out.

Another way you can look at it could be the planets and signs are the energies and the houses are the focus of those energies.

Each of the twelve houses of a chart rule certain areas of life, types of people and relationships, ideas, and life circumstances.

As with the 12 zodiac signs, there are 12 astrological houses, and each house is an analogy with one of the signs.

However, contrarily to signs, which spread invariably over 30 degrees of the zodiac circle, house sizes in Astrology may greatly vary from one house to the other.

House calculations are based on the exact birth time.

  • 1st House: Aries
  • 2nd House:  Taurus
  • 3rd House:  Gemini
  • 4th House:  Cancer
  • 5th House:  Leo

  • 7th House: Libra
  • 8th House:  Scorpio
  • 9th House:  Sagittarius

Calculating Astrological Houses

Note:  When calculating the houses, it is necessary to know the exact time, date, and location of your birth chart . In natal astrology, some astrologers will use a birth time set for noon or sunrise if the actual time of birth is unknown.

An accurate interpretation of such a chart, however, cannot be expected.

The cutting of the chart into 12 houses, referred to as “House systems”. There are many different variants of house systems that are used from one astrologer to another.

For the purpose of this website, we use the house system Placidus – the most ancient one.

Emphasizing the type of house containing planets in a natal chart helps one to see the chart as a whole. One familiar way of defining the houses is to separate them into the classifications of angular, succedent, and cadent.

The Houses are important because they give focus and direction to planets which fall within them.

Below is an overview table that we will look at in further detail.

An image of Astrological Houses and Astrological Houses 1. A Guide To The Meaning Of Zodiac Astrological Houses

List of Astrological Houses Meanings

House ruler sign.

Many astrologers assume that the houses relate to and have a natural affinity their corresponding signs. For example;

  • First House = Aries
  • Second House = Taurus

An example of this could be someone who has their Venus in the first house, may come across affectionately on first impressions, whereas someone who has their moon in the first house may be very visible with their emotions.

The house rulers are the general theme which governs the house. These are similarly related to the ruler signs and what those signs represent.

An example of this would be Communication , which is the ruler of the 3rd house. This is due to the influence of the sign Gemini . The sign of Gemini is ruled by Mercury , which is the planet of communication, ideas and how words, ideas are expressed.

The angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) are associated with a self-activating quality and have an immediate impact on the structure of one’s life. The keyword for the angular houses is ACTION . These houses are representative of the cardinal signs .

These houses are often given more attention in a chart than other houses because they form the angular aspects (AC, IC, DC, MC) , which are almost as important as the planets.

The succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11) are associated with individual desires and the areas of life we want to control and consolidate. The keyword for this type of house is SECURITY . These houses are representative of the fixed signs.

The cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12) are areas where there is input, exchange, and distribution of thoughts and observations. The keyword for these houses is LEARNING . These houses are representative of the mutable signs.

Empty Houses

Empty Houses in Astrology refer to houses in someone’s birth charts that do not contain any planets.

Even though some people worry about empty houses, it simply means that the areas of life that those houses represent do not have significant ‘pull’ or focus in someones life.

Intercepted Houses is when there is a house that skips a sign. For example;

  • 10th House In Libra

We wrote an article specifically for those people who have intercepted houses.

There are numerous principles given in the Astrological texts for this but here we will discuss only the most effective and important astrological principles for Travel abroad. So lets see what are planetary combination or Yogas in Kundli that takes a person away from homeland or own country.

Signs which are Most important for Foreign Settlement in Astrology

Signs are of thee types as per their activity-Chara rashi or Movable sign, Sthira Rashi or Fixed Sign and Dual Sign or common Sign.

Chara Rashi or Movable sign-Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn

Sthira Rashi or Fixed Sign-Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

Dual Sign-Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces.

For considering foreign Travel in Astrology Chara Rashi or Movable signas are of Prime importance. Movable Sign means-the changing tendency is high in these signs. So when Planets are placed in these signs, they give a changing tendency to the native like changing of residence, changing of job, changing of country etc.

Sthira Rashi or fixed Signs are not helpful in regards to Foreign settlement in astrology. Planets in these signs gives a tendency to stick to particular place. So those who have more planets in Fixed signs, they do not change their residence or job too much. Going abroad means change of country or change of residence. So planets in fixed sign blocks the chances of going abroad.

Common Sign or dual Sign can give short term foreign travel. Like if you have multiple planets in Dual sign you may go to abroad frequently but for very short duration may be like one month.

The signs are further divided according to quality or Tatwa of the Rashi. They are -Fiery sign, Earthy Sign, Airy Sign and watery Sign.

Fiery Sign-Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

Earthy Sign-Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

Airy Sign-Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

Watery Sign-Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

Watery Signs like Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are specially Very important for Traveling Abroad. For going to foreign countries we need to cross seas. So watery signs are so much important.Cancer is both Movable and Watery sign. More over it is the natural 4th house of the zodiac. So it has special importance for foreign travel in astrology.

Planets Like Rahu, Moon, Saturn, venus in watery Sign are good indication of Foreign Travel.

Planets That are important for Foreign settlement in Astrology

There are four main planets which helps a person to travel abroad or going out of own country-Rahu/Ketu, Moon, Saturn, Venus. We have to see these 4 planets and their dignities and connection with proper houses in Horoscope for going abroad.

Rahu is the Most important planet for travel abroad. If Rahu is well placed, it can give Foreign Travel in its Dasha. It can give foreign things but it can not guarantee satisfaction. When Rahu is conjunct with 7th lord, 8th lord, 9th lord or 12th lord, it can indicate foreign travel in astrology. Rahu in Lagna or 7th can also give travel abroad.

Moon being the natural 4th Lord, Moon is also equally important when judging Foreign settlement in astrology. According to classics when Moon is placed in Kendra(1,4,7,10) the person can travel a lot within country as well as outside of country. Moon in Watery sign specially when conjunct with Rahu can give foreign travel in astrology. Moon in 8th, 9th or 12th, specially exalted Moon in 12th can indicate foreign settlement in astrology.

Sun also plays interesting Role. Sun represents royalty. It bring native in contact with dignities. When Sun is placed in the 5th house from Ascendant, it is a helpful disposition for Diplomats and traveling abroad.

If Mercury is placed in 4th, the individual changes his residence frequently and travel lot of places. The result will be more prominent if Mercury is placed in Movable signs.

We have to see Few Nakshatras also like Ashwini Nakshatra, Bharani Nakshatra, Ardra nakshatra, Swati Nakshatra, Pussya Nakshatra, Hasta Nakshatra etc while judging the foreign travel in astrology. Moon or Rahu in these Nakshatra will increase the chance of going abroad.

The Houses in Horoscope which are most important for Foreign Travel in astrology

In earlier days, It was seen as a Curse to Leave own country and to go to a foreign country. But with time this curse has turned into Blessing. The Main house for Foreign journey is 12, 9 and Ascendant or Lagna.

12th house is the Foreign land. So This is the Most important House for Foreign settlement in astrology. If Moon is placed in 12th house along with Venus, this is a indication of Foreign Travel in astrology. If Rahu also Joins this conjunction, it becomes a very strong indication of foreign journey. if there is planet like Saturn in 12th house, the individual will have a strong inclination towards foreign country. 9th House Signify fortune, Luck, Long Journeys or long distance travel etc. So this is another important house for foreign travel in astrology. When 9th Lord is placed in 12th house or Vice versa,it indicates that your Fortune is in Foreign land. A group of Planet like 4 or 5 planet in 9th house of 12th house is a strong indication towards foreign travel in astrology.

The Next important house is Lagna or Ascendant. Lagna is the self. Without the approval of Lagna nothing can happen in a Horoscope. So if Lagna lord makes a relation with 12th lord or Lagna Lord sits in the 12th house, it is a strong indication of foreign travel in astrology. If this relations happen in Watery sign Like cancer, Pisces etc or Movable signs like Libra or Capricorn the chances is very high.

In a nutshell we have to see Conjunction, aspect, Exchange between Lagna Lord, 9th Lord and 12th Lord. If these relations involves watery signs or Movable signs, the indications are strong.  The more and strong the relation will be, the more will be the chances of foreign settlement in astrology.

But there is another important house which we have to Look and without the indication from this house traveling abroad is not possible. 4th House is the Home Land or own country. So any Affliction to 4th House or 4th Lord can give Foreign settlement. If the 4th house is Placed in 6th, 8th or 12th and 4th Lord is equally afflicted and there is relation between 9th and 12th house or their Lords, we can predict that there is high chance of foreign settlement in astrology. If there is planets Like Rahu/Ketu, sun or saturn in 4th house, the chance of Going abroad in astrology increases.

when the 4th house or the Lord is not afflicted or weak, the person can not leave his Own country. If there is relation between 9th or 12th but 4th house is very strong, chances for foreign journey will come but the native will not be able to go due some reason. If the 4th house is strong and connected with 5th and 10th house, the person will get good opportunity in own country and do not feel the need to go to abroad.

The are two more houses which also needs some attention. The 7th house and the 3rd house. 7th House also Deals with Foreign Travel. When 7th house is involved with 12th or Planets like Rahu/Ketu there can be Foreign journey due to Business purpose or Business Trip.

3rd House shows short Journeys or short travels. It is not directly connected with foreign travel always but it gives a tendency or inclination towards travel. If there is Planets Like Moon or Ketu is in 3rd house, the likes to travel a lot. If the 3rd Lord makes a relation with 12th lord and 9th lord by aspect, conjunction or Exchange it is strong Yoga for foreign Travel.

One thing we must remember that there is a difference between Foreign travel and Foreign Settlement. For Foreign Travel relation between 3rd, 7th, Lagna, and 9th in a watery or Movable sign is sufficient but foreign settlement in astrology can not happen without the involvement of 12th house or 12th lord.

But we must remember Jupiter should not aspect these combination. Jupiter aspect will block the chance of going abroad.

Methods to predict Foreign Travel from Horoscope

Now Lets see which Planetary combinations Promise Foreign Travel & Foreign settlement in Astrology. The Below is a effective way of how to see the Yogas for Foreign Travel in a Horoscope.

  • The fourth house or the fourth lord has to be afflicted from Lagna.
  • Rahu/Ketu should be connected via conjunction or Nakshatra exchange with 4th lord or 4th house.
  • Whenever 4th House is afflicted and 4th Lord is placed in Dusthana Like 6, 8 or 12th house, the native leaves his or her homeland to settle abroad.
  • We need to see all these factors from Lagna as well as Moon and also in Navamsa and chaturthamsa or D4.
  • If the 9th or the 12th house of a Horoscope falls in Moveable or Watery signs or the 9th & 12th lord is placed in Movable or watery signs Foreign Travel is indicated. For example If the 4th Lord is placed in the 9th house with 12th lord and the sign is also Movable or watery signs, it is a indication of Foreign Travel for higher education.
  • When 4th lord is placed in 12th house then native will find more auspicious living in abroad rather than at his native place.
  • Association of 5th, 9th, and 12th lords in the Dasamsha indicate traveling abroad for professional reasons. These persons are usually employed as skilled professional like (scientists, professors, etc.)in abroad.
  • Please note if Rahu is in 12th house with 9th lord specially in a watery sign will surely give foreign Travel in its Dasha-Antardasha. Planets Like Rahu or saturn in 12th house can give foreign settlement.
  • If the lord of the house of marriage or the 7th house is associated with 8th, 9th or 12th house or its Lords, it indicates foreign travel after marriage.
  • If the Lagna and Lagna lord both are in moveable signs or dual signs then it would indicate foreign travel. Lagna indicates self. So when the sign which indicates self and the lord of that sign are in moveable or dual signs which indicates movement it can create Yogas of foreign travel in astrology for the person.

Timing of Travel abroad in astrology

When there are sufficient chances in the natal chart for going abroad, the native may go for foreign travels during any of the periods mentioned below

  • Dasha-Antardasha of the 9th lord or the 12th lord, or the planets that are connected with the 12th lord or 12th house.
  • Dasha of Venus, Rahu/Ketu, Moon , saturn if these planets are connected with 12th house
  • During Transit when Planets like Rahu or saturn comes in 8th house or in Moon Nakshatra, that is also a good time for Abroad travel.
  • Dasha of Rahu is very special for foreign travel in astrology as Rahu is the Significator of foreign. Saturn period is also equally important.
  • Those who go for foreign countries for vacation once in a year or like that, they generally do not have any major combination of foreign travel in their Kundli or Horoscope but in transit, their 4th house gets afflicted due to some or other reason.

Great Luck In Foreign Countries

The Grass is always green in other side of the Road. But it is not always true.  Lets see which planetary combination or yogas give beneficial result in foreign country.

The 11th house is the financial gain, and so if a person has the 11th house lord placed in the 6th house, the person has great luck to go abroad and work in foreign countries. We should not forget about 11th House from Arudha Lagna also. Arudha Lagna is our Maya or how other people see us. So quite often if you go to abroad people think you as a wealthy and rich person. So your 11th house from AL should be very strong for getting good fortune in Foreign countries.

If you have the 11th house lord in the 12th house you will have friends abroad.

If your Lagna lord or Ascendant lord is in the 7th house you will constantly travel abroad for your business purpose or for work.

In case you have few of the above mentioned Yogas, you can be lucky during foreign travel in astrology.

But if Malefic Planets like Rahu, saturn, Mars occupy the 12th house in Horoscope, though you will be able to go abroad but you will not enjoy the stay there. If Rahu is placed in 12th house, it is a strongest indication of working abroad, but it will be full of stress.

If Some one is having 4th lord conjunct with 5th lord and with Lagna lord and 4th house has lot of benefic aspect, such person will not be interested in going abroad. He will get lot of opportunity in his home land.

There are specific periods of time (ranging from months to years) in which a person has a peak time in foreign countries. After the ruling periods (dasha) of such planets end, your stay abroad will end and you will come back to your home country and will have to start all over again in your homeland. But by doing remedies you can prevent such things to a great extent.

Purpose of Foreign Travel in Astrology

Now Lets understand the answer Why a person will go to abroad ? Will the native go for education or Job or something else ? Lets find out the answer.

If there is a strong connection between houses and Lords of 5th, 10th, 7th, 9th and 12th house, the person may go to foreign Land for higher education. 5th is the house of intelligence and education and 9th is also the house of long distance travel as well as higher education. The related planets should be in Movable sign or in watery sign. The individual should run correct Dasha also. Connection between 4-5-7-8-9-10-12 needs to be checked with Rahu, Saturn and Moon for checking Foreign travel for education purpose. What i have seen in practical cases that Jupiter involvement or presence of Saraswati Yoga is very beneficial in this regard.

Read: What is Saraswati Yoga

Now Lets understand in what Planetary combination a person goes to abroad for diplomatic service. For this we have to see the connection between Lagna-5-7-8-9-10-12 house and their Lord along with Rahu, Moon and Sun. Various Raj Yoga and Dhana Yoga should also be present in the Horoscope. Dasha of the connected planets can take them to foreign land.

When 7th house and its lord is connected with 9th house and 12th house as well as with their Lord there is chance of going to abroad after marriage. 4th house should be afflicted. Rahu and Significator of marriage Venus also plays an important role in this case of foreign travel in astrology after marriage. 8th house also to be considered and if it is a Love marriage, we have to include 5th house also. Venus is connected with 12th house or 8th house and Rahu in Rashi chart and Navamsa Chart (D9) this is a strong Indication of Foreign settlement after marriage astrology.

Some Specific Rule exclusively for foreign Settlement in astrology

As we told earlier that there is a difference between Foreign travel and foreign settlement. For Foreign settlement in astrology the role of 12th house and 4th house is most vital. In a most simple words i would like to say that a strong 12th house and a weak 4th house is needed for foreign settlement in astrology.

As it involves transfer of residence, the 4th lord must have affliction from two or more malefic planets like Rahu/Ketu or Saturn or sun etc. We have to check the chartuthamsa or D4 chart also and should see the condition of 4th house and 12th house and their lord. Generally Rahu Dasha is most effective for foreign travel in astrology as rahu is the Mlechha Karaka or Foregn planet. Generally if we see a connection between the house or Lords of 12-9-8-6 in a movable or watery sign, we can predict that there is high chance of foreign settlement in astrology.

Secrets to foreign travel and settlement through your horoscope

travel house in astrology

These days each individual is keen to move abroad either for education or employment and tourism purposes. India’s population living abroad is the largest in the world i.e. about 30 million up to 2018.  We, astrologers, are getting a number of queries from the natives- with regard to visits in Canada, the USA or the Middle East and Australia. The rise in the number of international migrants reflects the increasing importance of international migration.

Ancient classical books explicate that a person who stays abroad would be considered as unfortunate. Now the present scene has been totally changed. With the development of modern technology, today people can enjoy travel without missing their family. Mobile Phones and social media are chains between foreign countries and the home country. Now distances have been short, therefore, people are more drawn to foreign visits. At the present natives consider overseas settlement is considered as an achievement and success.

Most natives travel foreign countries for the following reasons.

  •  For Admission in higher studies i.e. for e ducation purpose.
  • Settlement in abroad
  • For marriage purpose
  • For short tours.

Foreign settlement

Astrological houses responsible for foreign travel

The whole zodiac is 360 degrees and for the purpose of astrology, it has been divided into 12 parts of 30 degrees each. Out of the 12 houses, some important houses which are responsible for abroad visits are following:

First House:   It represents self, the native and personality of an individual. Connection of this house to 7 and 12 indicate foreign travel.

Third House: This house signifies short journeys, because it is 12 th from the 4 th house. 4 th house symbolize motherland house.

Fourth House: 4 th house represents a place of residence, a home. For foreign settlement, one of the conditions is malefic planets or aspect of these planets on this house is necessary. Thus affliction to this house is necessary for departing from the country.

Seventh House: This house signifies, travel, partnership business and spouse. Its connection with the 12th house is also essential for foreign visits. It is also observed that spouse may be from foreign country.

Eighth house: This house has also a key role to go out of the country.  It indicates Sea Travel. In modern times it is also called as the house of Occult and research house.

Ninth house : 9 th house represents a long journey. This is the most important house which signifies foreign travel. Well placed 9 th house lord indicates the person will prosper in a foreign land. This house also represents spiritual learning as well as higher education. Its connection with the 12 th house is a strong combination for the foreign journey.

Tenth house: 10 th house represents occupation. This is also the house of Karma. Its relation with 9 th , 3 rd or 12 th houses shows that natives will travel abroad for occupational purposes.

Some of the important combination for foreign settlement

I have analy z ed a number of horoscopes of different people and for the purpose of study, I hereby give the important combinations:

  • Affliction to the fourth house necessary. It means there should not be any beneficial planet in this house. If it is so, the aspect of a malefic planet is necessary.
  • 4 th house is the house of motherland- if it is afflicted and connected with 12 th house or exchange with it- chances of foreign travel will be there.
  • Connection of 3rd house or it’s lord with 7th, 9th, and 12th houses indicate foreign tours. 3 rd house is the 12 th house from the 4 th house.
  • 5 th house is a house of education, intelligence, and creativity. A connection between 5th, 9th, and 12th house represents that the native is likely to visit abroad for educational purpose. He may also go for presenting any paper to a foreign country.
  • If the 1st, 7th and 12th house is connected to each other, then native will go abroad for a business deal. This combination also indicates native can go abroad after marriage.

travel house in astrology

  • The 9 th house is the house of advance education, luck, and long travel. Its connection with 5, 9, 12 and 7 indicates that natives will travel abroad for getting an education or religious needs. He may also settle or stay longer in a foreign land thereafter education in case of afflicted 4 th house.
  • If more planets are in Moveable and dual signs, it also indicates foreign travel frequently.
  • 10 th house is a house of profession and career. Its connection with the 12 th house- indicates a career in a foreign country.
  • In addition to the above, Moon, Saturn, Rahu and Lagnesh in 12 th also indicate foreign travel or settlement.
  • If there is no yoga in D-1 Chart, we should also go through the D-9 chart for foreign combinations.

Effective remedies for foreign settlement

Some time natives go again and again for the visa interviews. But despite yoga for foreign settlement in the horoscope they repeatedly get rejected. To remove these obstacles, I would recommend reciting Mantra of planets of 3 rd , 7 th , 9 th , and 12 th houses.

Mantra for each individual differs depending on the Dasha, Mahadasha, and Antardasha they are going through.

Presume 9 th lord is Saturn, in 12 th house- it will be better to recite Saturn Mantra- (Om pram prim prom sah shancharaya nama ). Similarly, if 7 th lord is Mar and is in the 12 th house- Recite Mar Mantra- Om kram krim krom sah bhomaya nama . The reciting of these mantras will remove some obstacles to getting the visa.

What Houses In Your Birth Chart Mean and How to Find Them

By Aliza Kelly

a galaxy image with the words The Astrological Houses over it

If you've ever had your chart read or hung out with astrology nerds, you've likely heard about the Twelve Houses . For many of us, horoscopes are the gateway into greater astrological curiosity. As we begin following them, we become more familiar with — and interested in — the many moving pieces of our birth charts . You've likely heard about signs and planets, for instance, but what the hell is a House?

Each planet, asteroid, or celestial point exists within a House, and that placement offers invaluable insight not just about your own personality, but also how you coexist with the world around you. Moreover, the Houses are a roadmap for understanding your past, present, and future. As the planets in the sky move across these domains, different events — both tangible and emotional — are triggered. Each house is associated with a different sign. For instance, the Seventth House of Partnership is associated with Libra energy: Libra is the sign of relationships and is all about balance, love, and fairness, so it makes sense that it corresponds with partnerships.

If this all sounds rather extraordinary, well, it is. The Houses are truly what makes astrology so spectacular. Each one signifies a component of life, but none of these subsections exist within a silo: The Twelve Houses also operate as a single unit, a collective that comprises the entire 360-degree wheel. Their geometric rhythm is a symbolic representation of an individual’s complete cosmology. To understand the meaning of the Houses in your own life, calculate your birth chart by simply plugging your time, date, and location of birth into astrology software, like what Astro.com offers , and follow along below.

What are the Houses in astrology?

The birth chart is divided into 12 equal sections, which comprise the Houses. The number 12 surfaces often in astrology — after all, it's a perfect numerical . However, do not get confused, as the Houses are not the same as the zodiac wheel, which is based on the sun's yearly rotational movement. Instead, the Houses reflect the earth's own 24-hour rotation around its axis. Accordingly, when reading a birth chart, astrologers fuse these two systems together. Since the Houses rotate every 24 hours, it is essential to use your correct time of birth when calculating your chart. Each house represents two hours of the sun's apparent movement each day. So when you get your crush's birth time, make sure it's correct!

Why is that a big deal? "The Houses in an astrology chart represent different facets of your life, based on the time and location of birth, and show the gifts or obstacles you will face in this lifetime," astrologer Lisa Stardust tells Allure. In other words, if the birth time is incorrect, your entire astrological cosmology will be inaccurate, and that's obviously a bummer.

The Language of the Houses

When you look at your chart for the very first time, it's hard to know exactly where to direct your focus. There are certain areas that are filled with symbols, while others are entirely empty. Which way is up? Which is down? And what do those symbols mean?

To get started, you first need to find your anchor: the Ascendant . Also known as the rising sign, the Ascendant is the furthest left point of the central horizon line and quite literally reveals which zodiac sign was emerging from the eastern horizon at your exact moment of birth.

Horoscope wheel chart blured on white paper

While the sun exposes our truth and the moon reflects our emotions , the Ascendant reveals major themes we will encounter throughout our life. For instance, communication will be a central theme in the life of a Gemini Ascendant , whereas innovation, progress, and nonconformity will define an Aquarius Ascendant's experience. The ascendant also is the "mask" one wears for the world, the image often portrayed through social media.

The Ascendant also reveals the chart's ruling planet . Someone with a Sagittarius Ascendant, for instance, is ruled by generous Jupiter, whereas a Pisces Ascendant is living in an empathetic Neptunian world.

We use the Ascendant not only to gauge our individual terrain but also to create the chart’s distinctive architecture. Birth charts are read counterclockwise with the Ascendant's horizontal line delineating the First House . We follow the sections, or Houses, and on the right side of the horizon line at the Descendent , we start to make our way to the top of the chart. Finally, we conclude the cycle with the Twelfth House , the section that borders the Ascendant to the north.

As you trace your birth chart, you may find that you have many planets in certain houses (in fact, four or more planets in a single house is called a stellium ), while others may be completely empty. That's absolutely normal. The birth chart is simply a snapshot of the sky at your moment of birth, and since most celestial bodies travel in clusters, they often stay close together. While the empty areas don't signify deficiencies, the locations of the planets do reveal important information.

Interpreting the Houses in Your Own Birth Chart

After you've anchored yourself at the Ascendant, you can begin to identify which Houses the planets occupy in your birth chart. To begin this process, think of each planet's specific function: For example, Mercury is a messenger, Venus is a matchmaker, and Mars is a warrior. The way in which the planet operates, however, is influenced by its zodiac sign. Mercury in serious Capricorn, for instance, will communicate logically and rationally; Venus in elusive Scorpio adores mysterious romance; Mars in protective Cancer tends to have an indirect approach to battle, and so on.

Once we identify the way each planet and sign work together, we look to the Houses to discover exactly where that energy is manifesting. Is Venus-Scorpio in the Second House of material objects, which would make an individual especially drawn to financially stable lovers? Or is Venus-Scorpio in the Ninth House of travel, which would signify a penchant for long-distance romance ? The planets within the Houses reveal the full scope of our experience and the nuances of our personality.

Although our natal planets in the birth chart remain stationary, the planets in the sky are constantly moving across our different Houses. Each planet has its own orbit, but since we follow the sun's 365-day cycle, we go through a complete solar cycle of all the Houses every year. In other words, everyone will experience the energies of each house throughout their life. Even if you aren't a Cancer, because Cancer is associated with the Fourth House of Home and Family, at some point, these areas of life with command your attention.

Now that you understand the importance of the Houses in astrology, let’s delve into each one.

Every Astrological House, Explained

Defined by the Ascendant, the First House defines you. It represents the body you were born with, your physical appearance, and your general temperament. Natal planets that occupy the First House tend to have a very strong influence in that person's life (for instance, Mercury in the First House is a sign of a chatterbox, while the moon in the First House reveals someone who wears emotions on their sleeve). Since this is the first stop in the cycle, when planets in the sky transit into this house, our goals are manifested, and new projects, ideas, or perspectives finally take form. This House corresponds with Aries energy .

The Second House is related to our personal finances, material possessions, and the concept of value. While it does rule money, it also covers our emotions, which live inside of us (and often affect us even more than money does). Natal planets in the Second House tend to seek security through their material world. Planets transiting the Second House reveal changes in resources or self-esteem. This House corresponds with Taurus energy .

Communication, transportation, and local community are all governed by the third house. Natal planets in the Third House are motivated by expression and often help guide you to build close relationships with their peers, [including siblings, coworkers, and classmates. Communication is the solution to most problems, and the basis of all successful relationships , so make sure to honor and nurture this sector of your chart. When planets transit the Third House, we often receive important information about our immediate network. This House corresponds with Gemini energy .

The Fourth House sits at the base of the chart and symbolizes home and family. Natal planets in the Fourth House reveal an individual's relationship with the maternal figure, as well as their unique outlook on domesticity. Planets moving across the Fourth House often encourage us to invest in our infrastructure by creating more private, nurturing spaces that make us feel safe, loved, and cared for. The Fourth House also rules your relationships with people (and pets) who are family, either blood or chosen. This House corresponds with Cancer energy .

This playful zone of the Fifth house is linked to creativity, romance, and children. Natal planets in the Fifth House are linked to your intrinsic artistic expression, while planets transiting the Fifth House often deliver eureka moments that boost our confidence. The Fifth House is all about what makes you feel good, whether it's orgasms , attention, or the fulfilling work of a creative project. This House corresponds with Leo energy .

The Sixth House corresponds with health, wellness, and daily routines, including odd jobs. Where the body you're born with exists in the First House, the choices made over a lifetime create the body found in your Sixth House. Naturally, our environment and life choices affect our health, such as self-care, having a good work-life balance, and whether you spend enough (or too much!) time in the sun, so let this house remind you to pay attention to your physical and mental well-being. Those with natal planets in this zone are often fueled by organization and structure and tend to focus on time and calendar management. Planets transiting the Sixth House help us form habits and redefine our schedules. This House corresponds with Virgo energy .

The Seventh House (the Descendent) sits directly across from the First House Ascendant and represents life-changing partnerships. Up until now, all the Houses have explored an individual's immediate world: their money, home, and friends. In the Seventh House, however, the concept of perspective is introduced. Simply put, the Seventh House symbolizes your "cosmic plus one," and yes, that refers to romantic partners, as well as other important relationships in your life. Those with natal planets in the Seventh House tend to be very focused on relationships, gravitating towards partnership in all areas of life. Planets moving through the Seventh House help us close deals, securing our bonds by signing contracts, and making things official. This House corresponds with Libra energy .

What do sex, death, and transformation have to do with one another? Well, they're all animalistic instincts. Those with natal planets in the Eighth House are often attracted to supernatural or occult topics, have intense romances, and will likely go through several fabulous makeovers within their lifetime. The Eighth House reminds us that it's okay to give in to our desires, we're going to die one day after all, but to always be adaptable and ready to let go of the past to make room for the present and future. Planets transiting this area help us understand the underbelly of any situation and serve as a reminder of life’s complexities. This House corresponds with Scorpio energy .

Travel, philosophy, and higher education all define the ninth house. In medieval astrology, this region was linked to places and people outside of your village. Now, we interpret this area as both literal and intellectual exploration. Those born with natal planets in the Ninth House are extremely curious and inquisitive, with deep-rooted wanderlust. When planets move across the Ninth House we often begin studying a new topic, move to a foreign location, or adopt a completely different perspective. The Ninth House encourages you to keep an open mind and be willing to learn new things as your world changes and expands. This House corresponds with Sagittarius energy .

The Tenth House, located at the very top of the birth chart, is the apex of your unique story, and yes, is basically the House of popularity. The Tenth House also governs public image, professional aspirations, and career achievements. Natal planets in the Tenth House reveal an ambitious individual, and changes in the profession often occur when planets transit this zone. This House corresponds with Capricorn energy .

As the houses begin their descent, the Eleventh House helps us remember the purpose of our hard work, and with who we share the joy of our accomplishments. The Eleventh House is linked to humanitarian pursuits, as well as our personal network. This covers our dear friends and support system who help keep us moving forward. Technology and innovation also exist within this zone, so those born with planets in the Eleventh House are often defined by their revolutionary ideas. Transiting planets through this domain help us broaden our reach as we define our role within society. This House corresponds with Aquarius energy .

In the sky, the Twelfth House exists just beneath the horizon: It's quite literally the darkness before dawn. Likewise, the Twelfth House is considered the "unseen realm," and governs all things that exist without physical forms, like dreams, secrets, and emotions. Those born with planets in the Twelfth House are often highly intuitive, perhaps even psychic . We attract karmic people into our lives when planets transit the Twelfth House, but during this time, we must also remember that not all relationships are meant to last. This House corresponds with Pisces energy .

The 12 houses in astrology and what they represent

Gain a comprehensive understanding of the 12 houses in astrology, decipher their cosmic language, and empower yourself with astrological knowledge.

Author picture of Kate Porter

Houses play an important role in astrology. And no, they don’t refer to the physical dwellings we live in. Rather, this set of 12 symbolizes the areas of life present in our birth charts.

Do you ever feel like you don’t have control over certain areas in your life? That’s where the houses come into play. In astrology, the 12 houses represent different aspects of your life, like relationships, careers, and health. Each house stands for a specific area of experience.

Need help to determine what each house means? Let’s explore what each house can tell you about your life:

What are the 12 houses?

What are the 12 houses?

The 12 houses in astrology represent various areas of life and experience, such as money, career, relationships, home life, creativity, etc. You find these houses in your birth chart, and they’re usually spelled using Roman numerals. 1

The first six houses are called the personal houses, representing areas in your life that relate to your inner self. This includes money, home life, family, health, relationships, and personal growth. 2

On the other hand, the second six houses are interpersonal, representing areas of your life that relate to the outside world. This includes your career, reputation, people’s thoughts, and how you interact with others.

It is believed that planets move through the houses, and depending on which house the planet is located in, it can have a positive or negative effect. Your birth chart allows you to learn more about yourself and your relationships while helping you make better decisions.

How do I find my 12 houses?

Finding what your 12 houses are requires you to generate your birth chart. You only need your birth date, time, and location. Once you have that information, enter it into an online astrology calculator.

Essentially, your Ascendant or Rising sign is the starting point of your birth chart, so it serves as your first house. From there, you can identify the other 11 houses.

An example of this is as follows:

  • If someone’s Ascendant or Rising is Scorpio, house one will be Scorpio.
  • House two will be Sagittarius, and so forth, until you reach the twelfth house, which would be Libra.

the 12 houses of the zodiac in astrology

What are the houses in astrology?

The zodiac wheel is a 360-degree circle, divided into 12 segments, or houses. Each house represents a different essential aspect of our lives. In the Movie of You, the houses are like the different sets or stages where the planets (actors) play out their roles (given by the zodiac signs).

You must know your time of birth to accurately determine the houses in your chart. If it wasn’t recorded on your birth certificate, you may have to work with an approximation, as in “My mom says it was sometime right around 4:30.” Or find an astrologer who does rectified charts. This intuitive, investigative reading can suss out what your closest birth time may be.

If you use the Placidus method (which we prefer and recommend), you may notice that the houses of your chart are different sizes. This takes into account the Earth’s tilt. The further from the equator you were born, the more unequal your houses will be in size.

How do you know which planets are in your ninth house?

Each house is like a movie set of your life where different types of action are taking place. When a planet is in that house, it’s like an actor on that set. To find out if you were born with planets in your 9th house, run a free birth chart here on our site. Then, look to see if there are any planet glyphs occupying that segment.

Here’s a handy guide to the planet glyphs for checking out your own chart:

What do the planets mean in the houses?

First and foremost, there is no “right answer” to this question. In fact, you could speculate on at least ten ways a planet is influencing a house at any given moment. This impact will also evolve over time.

To get you started on reflecting, below are some key words for each planet.

  • Sun : Self-expression, ego, creativity, vitality, leadership, passion, what excites you
  • Moon : Needs, desires, intuition, what comforts you
  • Ascendant/Rising : The first impression you make, initial instincts, appearance, attractions
  • Mercury : Communication, curiosity, thought processes, what you like to talk and learn about
  • Venus : Romance, seduction, fashion sense, what brings you pleasure, what you’ll spend money on
  • Mars : Instincts, turn-ons, lust, drive, motivation, pursuits, what you’ll fight for (and about)
  • Jupiter : Luck, inspiration, adventure, risk-taking, travel style, expansion, what you like learning about
  • Saturn : Time and karma, caution, challenges and struggles, boundaries, what you learn the hard way
  • Uranus : Innovation, originality, idealism, where you’re a rebel and a revolutionary
  • Neptune : Dreams, the subconscious, fantasy, glamor, addiction, healing, boundless imagination
  • Pluto : Secrets, wealth transformation, evolution, the unconscious, power (struggles)
  • North Node : Destiny, soul evolution, dharma, the new “language” you are learning to speak

How does each planet influence my ninth house?

If you were born with any planet in your 9th house, it will influence the following areas of life:

  • Expansion/broader horizons
  • Truth-seeking
  • Tactlessness
  • Publishing and media making
  • Cross-cultural connections
  • Self-development
  • Higher education
  • Inclusivity
  • New horizons
  • Spiritual beliefs

When a planet is transiting (orbiting) through your 9th house, these subjects will likely arise.

These areas of life are thoroughly described in the 9th place planet links above.

Another example using Kylie Jenner’s birth chart

Kylie Jenner has driven Mars in her 9th house of independence and entrepreneurship. Although born into wealth, she is arguably the most enterprising of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, becoming the youngest self-made billionaire in 2018 on the success of her Kylie Cosmetics brand which began with her legendary Kylie Lip Kit when Jenner was only 18.

Planets in the Zodiac Signs

There’s one more layer to this! The zodiac sign that the planet is in directs the role that it plays in your life. For example, if motivational Mars was Lady Gaga (the “actor”), Mars in dreamy, artistic Pisces would cast her— far from the shallow—as Ally in A Star Is Born. Mars in calculating, status-hungry Capricorn could turn her into Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci .

Or, in the case of Kylie Jenner, Mars is in Libra, the sign that rules fashion and beauty, the industry that made her a billionaire through her entrepreneurial efforts. In addition to becoming a beauty product mogul, the youngest Kar-Jen sister has unapologetically modified her own look through cosmetic surgery (Mars rules knives and metal surgical instruments).

What if my 9th house is empty, has no planets in it?

Empty houses still play a role—and we think of them like blank canvases where you might even have a little more freedom to say what goes. In some ways, this might even be a relief!

But no house will ever stay empty for long. The moon transits (orbits) through all 12 houses in the span of a month. The Sun visits each throughout one year. When a planet transits through a house, it lights it up with its energy. That area of your life will feel the influence!

For example, if the moon is in your 9th house, you may be inspired to reach out to family that lives out of town or to have a candid conversation with a close friend. Saturn transiting the 9th house may give you the discipline to write a book, start a business venture or plan a major trip that’s been on your bucket list for years.

Astrological Aspects Influencing Travel

Transits and progressions.

Transits and progressions play a vital role in determining travel opportunities and experiences. When a planet transits the 9th house or makes significant aspects to the 9th house ruler, it can trigger travel-related events. Positive aspects may indicate exciting travel prospects, while challenging aspects can signify delays, obstacles, or even changes in travel plans. Similarly, progressions, which reflect slower inner changes, can also reveal important periods for travel or shifts in one’s travel preferences.

Aspects with the 9th House Ruler

Aspects made by planets with the 9th house ruler can provide additional insights into one’s travel tendencies. Harmonious aspects may bring about enjoyable travel experiences, as well as opportunities for personal growth and expansion. Challenging aspects, on the other hand, can suggest the need for caution, potential delays, or disruptive experiences during travel. Understanding these aspects in the birth chart can help individuals navigate their travel journeys with greater awareness and insight.

Combining Aspects for Travel Predictions

Astrologers consider a combination of factors, including transits, progressions, and aspects, to make accurate predictions about travel. By analyzing these astrological influences in relation to the individual’s unique birth chart, one can gain a deeper understanding of the timing, nature, and potential challenges associated with travel. This comprehensive approach allows for more accurate travel predictions, aiding individuals in planning their journeys and making the most of their experiences.

Timing and Duration of Travel

Transiting planets in the 9th house.

The presence of transiting planets in the 9th house can indicate travel opportunities. When a planet transits this house, it activates the energies associated with long-distance travel, expansion, and exploration. Positive influences from planets like Jupiter can signify favorable travel endeavors, while challenging aspects from malefic planets may bring about delays or obstacles during the journey. Understanding the influence of transiting planets in the 9th house enables individuals to plan their travel timing more effectively.

Retrograde Planets and Travel Delays

Retrograde planets can have an impact on travel experiences and may sometimes cause delays or disruptions. When a planet is in retrograde, its energies become more introspective and inward-focused. This can manifest as a need to revisit past travel experiences or reassess one’s approach to travel. Retrograde planets in the 9th house or making challenging aspects to the 9th house ruler can indicate the need for patience and caution during travel, as well as the potential for unexpected detours or delays.

Travel Based on Solar Returns and Progressions

Solar returns and progressions offer additional insights into the timing and duration of travel. Solar returns, which occur when the Sun returns to its natal position each year, provide a snapshot of the coming year’s themes, including potential travel opportunities. Progressions, on the other hand, reflect slower inner changes and can indicate significant periods for travel based on the progression of the individual’s birth chart. These timing techniques can help individuals plan their travel adventures based on astrological influences and optimize their experiences.

Travel Challenges and Remedies

Legal issues and travel.

Sometimes, legal issues can arise during travel, leading to delays, disputes, or even potential problems with immigration authorities. Challenging aspects involving the 9th house, its ruler, or key planets in the birth chart may indicate potential legal hurdles during travel. To mitigate these challenges, individuals can take proactive measures such as researching and adhering to local laws, ensuring necessary documentations are in order, and seeking legal advice if required. By being well-prepared and mindful of potential legal implications, travelers can navigate their journeys more smoothly.

Cultural Differences and Language Barriers

Traveling to foreign countries often involves encountering different cultures and language barriers. The 9th house governs cross-cultural experiences and encourages individuals to embrace diversity. However, cultural differences and language barriers can pose challenges during travel. To overcome these hurdles, it is essential to engage in cultural sensitivity, respect local customs and traditions, and make efforts to learn basic phrases in the local language. By fostering open-mindedness and genuine curiosity, travelers can bridge cultural gaps and create meaningful connections with the locals.

Precautions and Astrological Remedies

Astrology offers various precautions and remedies to enhance travel experiences and mitigate potential challenges. For instance, using protective crystals associated with travel, such as amethyst or black tourmaline, can provide a sense of grounding and protection during journeys. Additionally, performing travel-related rituals or prayers before embarking on a trip can help harmonize the energies and invite positive experiences. Astrologers may also recommend performing specific remedies based on the individual’s birth chart, such as wearing specific gemstones or carrying talismans associated with travel and protection.

Carrying Your Home in Your Chart

Homing instincts and travel styles.

While the 9th house is strongly associated with travel and exploration, it is equally important to consider an individual’s homing instincts and travel styles. The 4th house, which signifies home, family, and roots, complements the 9th house in this regard. Some individuals may have a stronger desire for travel, while others may prefer the comforts of home. By understanding the balance between these two houses in the birth chart, individuals can identify their unique travel styles and balance their thirst for exploration with their need for stability and grounding.

Finding a Sense of Belonging Abroad

For those who feel a deep connection to a foreign land or seek a sense of belonging outside their home country, the 9th house’s influence can play a profound role. Moving or temporarily residing abroad can bring individuals closer to their desired sense of belonging, as they immerse themselves in different cultures and create lasting connections. The 9th house encourages individuals to seek experiences that make them feel at home, even if they are physically far away from their place of birth.

Astrological Tips for Creating a Home on the Go

Creating a sense of home while constantly on the go can be challenging, but astrology provides valuable insights for achieving this balance. Understanding one’s moon sign and its placement in the birth chart can shed light on the emotional needs and comfort zones. This knowledge can help individuals create a personalized travel routine that incorporates elements of home, such as carrying sentimental items or maintaining spiritual practices. By cultivating a sense of familiarity and security, travelers can create a home on the go, fostering emotional well-being and a sense of rootedness wherever they may be.

Travel Horoscopes and Navigating the World

The importance of the ascendant.

The ascendant, or rising sign, plays a crucial role in travel horoscopes as it represents the individual’s outward expression and approach to the world. The ascendant helps determine one’s travel style and preferences, influencing the experiences sought during travel. Each ascendant has its distinct qualities and characteristics, which shape one’s perception of different cultures, landscapes, and travel experiences. Understanding the influence of the ascendant in a travel horoscope can provide valuable insights for navigating the world and optimizing travel experiences.

Houses Ruled by Mercury and Jupiter for Travel

The houses ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication and curiosity, and Jupiter, the planet of expansion and travel, offer additional insights into travel tendencies. For example, if Mercury rules the 9th house, it further highlights an individual’s curiosity and intellectual approach to travel. The house ruled by Jupiter provides insight into the areas of life in which one may find opportunities for growth through travel. These houses enhance the understanding of how travel fits into one’s overall life journey and personal development.

Transits and Progressions for Travel Horoscopes

Transits and progressions remain essential tools in travel horoscopes as they help determine the timing and nature of travel experiences. Analyzing transiting planets and progressed aspects to the 9th house and its ruler can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the travel opportunities that may arise during a particular period. These insights allow individuals to plan their travel adventures when the celestial energies are aligned with their travel aspirations, facilitating enriching and transformative experiences.

In conclusion, astrology offers valuable insights into the 9th house’s significance in travel. From its association with expansion, exploration, and higher education, to its influence on spiritual journeys and cultural exploration, the 9th house shapes our travel experiences and personal growth. In astrology, the placement of planets in the houses of a birth chart is determined by the exact time and location of a person’s birth. The ninth house in a birth chart is associated with higher learning, philosophy, travel, and expansion of the mind. To determine which planets are in your ninth house, you need to create your birth chart using your birth date, time, and location. Here’s how you can do it:

You’ll need your exact birth date, time of birth, and the location (city and country) where you were born.

You can use various online astrology websites or software to generate your birth chart. There are many free options available. Simply input your birth information, and the software will generate a detailed chart showing the positions of the planets in the different astrological houses, including the ninth house.

Once you have your birth chart, locate the ninth house. It’s typically represented by a numbered section of the chart. The cusp, or beginning, of the ninth house is usually indicated by a horizontal line that separates it from the eighth house.

Look for symbols representing the planets within the ninth house section of your birth chart. Each planet has its own symbol, such as the Sun (☉), Moon (☽), Mercury (☿), Venus (♀), Mars (♂), Jupiter (♃), Saturn (♄), Uranus (♅), Neptune (♆), and Pluto (♇).

The planets in your ninth house can provide insights into your approach to higher education, philosophy, travel, and spiritual matters. The specific planet’s characteristics and aspects will influence how these areas of your life are affected.

Neptune In Astrology

An Astrologer and Travel Agent Share Where To Travel This Year, According to Your Zodiac Sign

travel house in astrology

  • Maria Sofia Marmanides , astrologer, tarot reader, and intuitive
  • Tom Marchant , owner and co-founder of the Black Tomato luxury travel agency

While there is an entire focus in astrology that considers how geography interacts with your specific birth chart called astrocartography , it's also possible to get a simpler star-aligned travel suggestion, according astrologer to Maria Sofia Marmanides . All you have to do is consider your ninth house. In astrology, there are 12 houses that govern different aspects of life, and the ninth house focuses on travel. "We can take a lot of cues about what appeals to us while away from home and out of our comfort zones based on the sign and planet that is ruling that house," Marmanides says.

"We can take a lot of cues about what appeals to us while away from home and out of our comfort zones based on the sign and planet that is ruling [the ninth] house." —Maria Sofia Marmanides, astrologer

Just be sure to read for your rising sign (not your sun sign, which is what you'd typically read for your horoscope), since your rising sign is what's connected to the placement of houses. "Your rising sign determines where all the houses or areas of life are set up in your birth chart, so reading for your rising sign gives your horoscopes, if they’re reliably written, a dead-on accuracy that you just can’t get from sun signs," astrologer Mackenzie Greer previously told Well+Good .

Your rising sign will always be the sign in your first house, so to determine your ninth house placement, count to the ninth sign ahead of your rising sign. For example, if you are a Leo rising, Leo is your first house placement, and Aries—nine signs away from Leo—rules your ninth house of travel. (Not sure what your rising sign is? Input your birth time, date, and location into a free natal chart generator like this one .)

Below, Marmanides and Tom Marchant , founder of the Black Tomato travel agency, offer specifics for where to travel this year, according to your zodiac sign.

Check out below for where to travel, based on your zodiac sign

  • 09 Sagittarius
  • 10 Capricorn
  • 11 Aquarius

Aries: t he Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

travel house in astrology

Sagittarius rules Aries's ninth house, and since one of the archer’s core traits is seeking change, this means Aries wants to expand their horizons when they travel. “A yoga or meditation retreat may be just the thing that relaxes their fiery nature while also allowing them to have a spiritual and adventurous experience,” Marmanides says.

Marchant says the  Yucatán Peninsula region of Mexico is a good bet for self-reflection and relaxation. Marchant recommends seeking out sunrise yoga, enjoying spa treatments, diving in natural cenotes , or swimming in a saltwater lagoon for a healing vacation you won't forget.

Taurus: Svalbard, Norway

travel house in astrology

Taurus loves nature, and Capricorn ruling its ninth house means the bull will enjoy travel that includes picturesque, snowy destinations in the mountains where they can do lots of physical activities.

Scenic and unique, Svalbard is a winter wonderland filled with pleasing views. “Days can be spent cross-country skiing between mighty glaciers and vast peaks, with nights beneath the blaze of the midnight sun ,” Marchant says.

Gemini: Patagonia, Chile

where to travel zodiac sign

Gemini wants to experience something their friends haven’t, so Marmanides says any destination “that has the potential to be the next coolest place to travel” is their ideal vacation spot.

The remoteness and beauty of Patagonia make it one of the next “it” travel destinations, Marchant says: “Its rugged wilds, dense forests, and turquoise-tinted lakes will leave visitors breathless in the best possible way.”

Cancer: Paros or Folegandros, Greece

travel house in astrology

Cancers want to escape and unplug, so they’ll look for a vacation that’s as remote as possible to maximize their chances to relax. Breezy Pisces rules Cancer’s ninth house, which Marmanides says means they want to return from vacation “refreshed, reenergized, and ready to reset.”

The Greek islands are ideal for rest and relaxation, especially the locales that are a less trodden with tourists. “Avoiding crowds is easy in the secretive Byzantine coves of Paros  and the isolated quietude of Folegandros , a tiny, gem-like island that once served as a place of political exile,” Marchant says.

Leo: Diamond Circle, Iceland

travel house in astrology

Leos love anything grand, and that extends to how they vacation. “Anything where they can cross something off their bucket list and share it on social media will make them feel like this vacation was one for the record books,” Marmanides says. Aries rules their travel house, so this means they’ll want a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that involves activities.

The Diamond Circle driving route in the northeast area of Iceland is a “true bucket list item off the beaten path,” Marchant says. The major sites on the route, harbor town Húsavík (known for its whale watching), Lake Mývatn, the Dettifoss waterfall and the Ásbyrgi Canyon, show off the rustic and wild wonders Iceland is known for, he adds.

Virgo: Lake Como, Italy

travel house in astrology

Virgos want simplicity while on vacation, and they also like to plan. All-inclusive options with everything in one place is often a star-aligned option. Taurus rules their ninth house, so they’re also into luxury, Marmanides says.

Located in Northern Italy, Lake Como is a glamorous destination known for its luxe offerings. Marchant recommends a stay at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo , which he says offers “five-star service with classic and elegant Italian charm.”

Libra: Beijing

travel house in astrology

Libras, whose ninth house is ruled by Gemini, want beautiful destinations with lots of history. “They won’t mind choosing a place that is so full of things to do that they’ll have to come back, and they might enjoy visiting the same place a few times, so their ideal locations are big cities,” Marmanides says.

No traveler on vacation would be able to do everything in Beijing, China's massive and sprawling capital city, which Marchant says "fuses modernity with tradition." Ancient landmarks include the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven.

Scorpio: Egypt

travel house in astrology

Scorpios pursue depth, so they want that on vacation, too; this means going places where they can dive into an immersive culture and history. “The more ancient the better,” Marmanides says.

Marchant recommends heading to Egypt. Home to some of the best-known wonders of the ancient world, he says there's "no shortage of sites for exploration, including the grand temples and its meandering River Nile."

Sagittarius: Cartagena, Colombia

where to travel zodiac sign

Sags want their trips to be epic and filled with fun. Outgoing Leo rules their ninth house, which Marmanides says means “destinations known for nightlife, from restaurants, bars, and clubs, to other places where they can be seen.”

According to Marchant, Cartagena , the seaside jewel of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, has Latin America’s best party scene. The bars don’t close until dawn and clubs pulse with vibrant dancing and music. Marchant suggests dancing the night away and eating and drinking at Café del Mar .

Capricorn: Miami, Florida

travel house in astrology

Organized Caps like to get as much out of their time off as possible by researching an itinerary and packing trips with lots of well-vetted activities. Practical Virgo rules their ninth house, so a “global city where they can keep their schedules tight” ensures they’ll never need to run out of things to do and places to see in one trip.

Miami is a bustling city, with myriad activities and global influences, allowing Capricorns to move from one thing to the next. Marchant recommends taking in peaceful ocean views in luxury at The Setai . Visit the Art Deco District’ s art galleries and hit the Lincoln Road shopping district before setting out for some late-night food and dancing around Ocean Drive.

Aquarius: Stockholm, Sweden

travel house in astrology

Fashionable Libra rules Aquarius’s ninth house, lending the creative sign a love of shopping. “They want to find something unique and memorable to bring back home as a souvenir or memento,” Marmanides says.

Stockholm is growing fashion capital, which Marchant calls “a trendsetter’s heaven.” It's known for its focus on sustainable and modern design. Check out the fashionable Södermalm district in downtown Stockholm.

Pisces: The Great Blue Hole, Belize

where to travel zodiac sign

Scorpio rules Pisces's ninth house, lending a dose of depth and intensity in terms of travel. This can manifest as Pisces wanting relaxing and unwinding to be top travel priorities. It’s fitting that the zodiac’s fish wants to be anywhere near water, which “allows them to relax and enjoy the soothing and cleansing effects of salt water on their skin,” Marmanides says.

This year, Pisces may embark on a dreamy Caribbean vacation in the clear, blue waters in Belize. Marchant recommends scuba diving in the Great Blue Hole , which researchers think is the largest sinkhole of its kind in the world and a part of a collapsed cave system that’s believed to have formed around 10,000 years ago.

A Full Guide to Your Astrology Birth Chart and How to Read It, According to an Astrologer

Astrologist Lisa Stardust gives the rundown on everything you need to know about reading your birth chart

Astrology offers us a unique understanding of our conscious and subconscious selves, primarily through our birth charts.

By exploring our birth chart, we can better understand our personalities and desires, leading to greater self-appreciation, acceptance, and acknowledgment.

An astrological birth chart serves as a snapshot of the planets at the date, time, and location of our birth. It is a highly personal tool that enables us to understand ourselves better.

By examining the chart, which many call a “cosmic map to our soul,” we can gain insights into our individualistic connection with the universe.

Here's everything you need to know about your birth chart and how to read yours.

How do you figure out your birth chart?

To generate your birth chart, you'll require three significant details: birth date, birth time and birth location. These details should be verified with official documents like a birth certificate or a baby book — even a parent’s testimony works.

In earlier times, people used to calculate the information manually by creating an ephemeris based on the stars at the time of birth, which is not necessary anymore. You can easily calculate your birth chart online like Astro.com , which will generate a precise birth chart wheel.

Your birth chart may appear overwhelming at first glance due to the use of symbols to represent planets and signs. However, there is an easy way to understand the meaning of everything. With some practice, even a novice can become an expert by analyzing their birth chart and comprehending the symbols in the diagram.

Don't let the complexity of astrology discourage you from exploring it; it's a discipline that is accessible to everyone. Remember, practice makes perfect!

What are the astrological houses in a birth chart?

The birth chart is divided into 12 distinct areas, known as houses, each representing an essential aspect of our being. Each of these houses contains a wealth of information, and as you navigate through the chart starting at the mid-left side and all the way around, you'll find that each section represents a unique and significant slice of life.

The first house: This section of the birth chart is also known as the ascendant or rising . It is representative of the energy we're putting out into the world, what people notice about us, first, our identity, and the way we represent ourselves.

The second house: This house represents our legacy, material possessions, our relationship to money, and our values.

The third house: This sector of the birth chart signifies communication, early childhood education, siblings, roommates, and the local community.

The fourth house: This part of the birth chart relates to the relationship we have with our family, our home life, our ancestors, and our aspirations.

The fifth house: The fifth house signifies the prospect of taking risks in gambling, investing, exploring creativity, and pursuing casual romantic relationships, hobbies, and children

The sixth house: This house embodies our health, daily activities, habits, wellness, colleagues, and employees. Also, how we can be of service to others.

The seventh house: This area of the birth chart relates to interpersonal relationships, contracts, marriage partnerships, and open enemies.

The eighth house: This is the house of sex, death debts, taxes, transformation, other people's money, and intuition.

The ninth house: The ninth house is the sector of our charts focusing on exploration, travel, philosophy, adventure, higher education, morals, and the law.

The 10th house: This area of the chart represents our public image and standing, as well as our career and achievements.

The 11th house: This place showcases the humanitarian and charitable work being done, as well as our friendships, social lives, hopes, and aspirations.

The 12th house: This is the house of clandestine matters, mental health, secret enemies, all things hidden from the public, solitude, and our subconsciousness.

What are the planets in a birth chart?

It is necessary to take a step forward and explore the planets occupying the houses in the chart. This will bring a unique essence and depth to the overall atmosphere of the house.

For instance, having Mars in the first house would make one an enthusiastic go-getter who is always eager to make things happen. On the other hand, if the moon is in the second house, there would be an emotional attachment to material possessions. Similarly, Mercury in the third house would make the person more curious and informed about every aspect of their life, as well as those around them.

The planets will be shown in each house via glyphs, which are astrological symbols. Here are the planets and a brief synopsis of their cosmic meanings:

Sun: One’s identity, will, and ego.

Moon: Memories, comforts, and emotions.

Mercury: Communication, siblings, transportation, and intellect.

Venus: Romance, values, artistry, aesthetics, and confidence.

Mars: Action, desire, and passion.

Jupiter: Long-distance travel, abundance, worldly inspiration, exploration, and luck.

Saturn: Discipline, hard work, maturity, duty, structure, and responsibility.

Uranus: Rebellion, revolution, innovation, breakthroughs, breakdowns, unconventionality, and growth.

Neptune: Illusion, delusions, spirituality, imagination, idealism, and fantasy.

Pluto: Personal evolution, sudden change, and rebirth.

The North or True Node: The karnic destiny we are moving toward in our lifetime.

The South Node: What we are leaving behind from a past life.

What are the zodiac signs in a birth chart?

Your passion and enthusiasm are evident in all your endeavors. And if Taurus rules your second house, you could be conservative with spending, someone who wants to save money and plan for the future.

How does this inform your birth chart?

Once you've crafted your birth chart and learned about the houses, planets, and zodiac signs, you can integrate everything.

For instance, if your seventh house is ruled by Cancer, and Pluto is present in the same house, this indicates that you are someone who is constantly changing your approach towards relationships. You seek growth and development in your relationships, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.

On the other hand, if you have the Sun in the 11th house, which Gemini rules, you are someone who always seeks to connect with different kinds of people to gain a better understanding of the world. You thrive in social situations and find it to be a valuable tool in discovering more about yourself.

When interpreting your birth chart, remember that your perspective is the most important. You can think of yourself as an artist, using your birth chart as the brush strokes and the houses, signs, and planets to add color, flavor, and emphasis wherever you feel it's necessary. What matters the most is what you relate to. If it's in your chart, it's in your heart.

As you dive deeper into astrology and explore your birth chart, you'll better understand yourself and your place in the world. Taking your time and approaching the process with intention can help you truly absorb the knowledge and apply it in meaningful ways.

With your birth chart as a guide, you can gain insights into your strengths, weaknesses, and one-of-a-kind qualities, which can ultimately help you connect more deeply with yourself and those around you.

Homeless Californians built a house complete with rock walls, a garden, a barbecue grill, a hammock, decorative string lights, potted plants and working electricity on a strip of land wedged between a busy freeway and the Arroyo Seco in Los Angeles.

The impressive and seemingly sturdy structure stands out among the dozens of makeshift shelters, tents and tarps that those without a home have constructed along the drainage basin, as filmed by local news station KTLA.

Makeshift home on strip of land between the 110 Freeway and the Arroyo Seco

The number of encampments built above the “dry river” has increased in recent years as 46,000 Los Angeles residents are experiencing homelessness, the station reported.

The people who live in the makeshift home on the edge of the 110 freeway would not speak to the station, but neighbors who did gave mixed reactions.

“They don’t bother me,” one nearby resident said in Spanish, noting that most of the encampment inhabitants keep to themselves.

But neighbor Mike Ancheta, who was biking by, said he “admired” the work they’ve done, though the shelters shouldn’t be there.

“This doesn’t belong here. This is public property,” Ancheta told KTLA. “But this is not what it’s supposed to be used for. This is dangerous. As you can see, someone is cooking out there, an open fire. They are stealing electricity. I mean, come on.”

The house-like encampment, however, does have two fire extinguishers in its “yard,” photos show.

“It sucks that some of these people are here,” Enrique Rodriguez said. “I do wish better for those people. [But] I cannot be sorry for the mistakes that they made.”

Yet another resident blamed Los Angeles’ rental costs.

“It’s messed up,” Ulysses Chavez told the local station.

“They should lower rent. They should lower all kinds of stuff, especially in LA.”

Why The Astrology World Can’t Stop Talking About The Jupiter Uranus Conjunction

rebecca-mitchell-writer-australia-journalist-ELLE

You would think the year’s biggest moment in astrology would be an eclipse or a series of ruthless retrogrades . But in 2024, the biggest astrological happening is the simple conjunction of two planets: Jupiter and Uranus.

In astrology, a conjunction is when two planets align in the same part of the sky, under the same zodiac sign . It’s a frequent occurrence among other astral combos, but these two planets have the ability to see big disruptions, changes or manoeuvres on a macro and micro scale.

The conjunction of Uranus and Jupiter is set to occur on April 21, 2024 (or April 20, if you’re in the northern hemisphere), following an already significant month of eclipse seasons and mercury retrograde .

travel house in astrology

According to astrologer Emma Vidgen, known online as @emma_vee , the Jupiter Uranus conjunction is “probably the big moment of the year that everyone’s going to be talking about from an astrology perspective.”

So, let’s dive in, shall we?

What Is A Conjunction In Astrology?

First thing’s first: what is a conjunction?

When two planets are “conjunct” it means they are in (or around) the same place, in the same sign. If you think of the sky like a large circle divided into 12 sections or ‘houses’, with each house ruled by a different star sign. Then imagine Jupiter and Uranus are lining up at the same degree in the Taurus sector as they both track their usual orbit.

In astrology, each planet represents its own themes and features, and the relative closeness of these planets when conjunct, sort of represents a collision or melding of these themes.

Conjunctions happen all the time between many combinations of planets. However, some specific combinations may be more rare than others. The last conjunction between Jupiter and Uranus, for instance, was in 2011, and the next one will be in 2037.

uranus-jupiter-conjunction

What Does The Jupiter Uranus Conjunction Mean?

As with all planetary happenings, they mean different things to different people. The Jupiter Uranus conjunction will, according to Emma, be a big moment for society at large.

As Jupiter moves its period of time in the sign of Taurus, it will meet Uranus towards its finale in the sign.

Uranus is the planet of rebellion, uprisings, defiance and revolution. Jupiter, being the planet of belief and big picture, this collision is going to be huge, Emma says.

“Jupiter/Uranus conjunctions are historically a time of big revolutions,” Emma explains. “So, there’s the possibility of this rising-up of people based on belief.  It will be a very significant moment from a more macro perspective.”

astrology-houses

What does the Jupiter Uranus conjunction mean for you?

While you will certainly witness or feel the effects of these macro-level changes, on a personal level this planetary conjunction is an invitation to shake off any self-imposed restrictions.

If you know where Taurus is in your chart, consider how the planet of defiance might lead to bigger things for you in that area. For instance, if you have Taurus in your 5th house of romance, play and creativity, the Jupiter Uranus conjunction might be a good time to take a chance on a new idea or lover.

“Look for those spontaneous opportunities to say yes to things you might not otherwise,” Emma encourages. “Accept the invitation you normally wouldn’t, go on the date with that person who is a bit outside your remit of what you would normally consider.”

“It’s really about breaking free of these constraints that we tie ourselves up in. It’s really exciting.”

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

travel house in astrology

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

This house, designed by architect Fyodor Shekhtel, was built for Alexander Levenson, the proprietor of a famous Moscow typography, in 1900. The house had space for printing machines, as well as living premises. The highlight of the house is a fascinating roof lantern. Recently, the house was scientifically restored and is now for sale. The 1,000-sq.m. building’s price tag is 1.1 billion rubles (approx. $14.4 mln).

What seems an ordinary house from the outside is really one of the poshest mansions of 19th century Moscow, built for Nikolay Zimin, a major Russian tobacco trader. Built in 1896 according to the project by Edmund Yuditsky, it still houses the original interior decoration. Russian cinema buffs might recognize it from the movie ‘Brat-2’, directed by Alexey Balabanov.

This house looks like a palace right out of a Russian fairytale, but it was actually built in 1895 (designed by architect Nikolay Pozdneev), at the order of Nikolay Igumnov, a textile tycoon from Yaroslavl.

The bricks were shipped in from the Netherlands, the fascinating porcelain facade tiles made following a special order at the Kuznetsov porcelain factory, the most famous in Russia at the time. The cost of the house was allegedly around 1 million rubles (when 150 rubles was a solid year’s salary). Inside, the 40 rooms of the house were decorated in a variety of styles – from traditional Russian to art nouveau.

This mansion, commissioned by textile industrialist Nikolay Vtorov, was built in 1913. It takes its English name, Spaso House, from Spasopeskovskaya Square, where it is located. It’s a neo-classical recreation of a classic upper-class city mansion of the 1820s, with palladian windows and a perfectly symmetrical interior plan.

Vtorov’s family lived in the house for just 4 years before the Revolution, after which the house was expropriated by the new Soviet government to serve as a reception house for the All-Russia Central Executive Committee.

In 1933, the house became the residence of William C. Bullitt, the first U.S. Ambassador to the Soviet Union, and has stayed the residence of the U.S. ambassadors ever since. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan all stayed there when they visited Moscow.

This mansion, again built by Fyodor Shekhtel, this time for millionaire Stepan Ryabushinsky in 1900-1902, is probably the architect’s most famous work in Moscow. Apart from all the fascinating art nouveau interior decoration and the famous stairwell with a jellyfish lamp, the mansion also housed a secret chapel – the Ryabushinskis were Old Believers, outlawed in Russia until 1905. “I believe that in the whole of Europe there is no house like this,” Ryabushinski said when examining the newly-built mansion.

After 1917, when the Ryabushinsky family fled Russia, the house became the state’s property and, in 1931, writer Maxim Gorky and his family started living there. Gorky didn’t like the mansion at all, calling it “awkward, but fit for working at least”. After Gorky’s death, the mansion became Maxim Gorky’s personal museum, which helped preserve the unique interiors of the house to the present day.

Constructed in 1897 by Pyotr Boytsov, the house was commissioned by a businessman named Sergey Berg. It comprises different styles – gothic, baroque and art nouveau. Berg’s mansion was one of the first Moscow homes to have electricity installed – lighting and an electric doorbell. It was here that the first “electric ball” was held.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
