Places to Visit in Shillong

Umiam Lake: Umiam Lake, a mesmerizing man-made reservoir, also known as the Barapani Lake. The scenic Umiam Lake is encircled by lush green East Khasi hills that form one of the best panoramic sights for nature-lovers in the country. The lake is popular for boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing. The sunrise at the lake is a treat to watch. The Umiam Lake has a park adjoining it which is a hotspot for picnics.  Shillong Peak: At the height of 6449 ft or 1965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird's eye view.  Ward’s Lake: Also known as Pollock's Lake, the mesmerising lake is a popular picnic spot. In the middle of the lake is a small bridge created to enable the visitors to have a panoramic view of the entire lake or feed the tiny fishes floating around in the water (puffed rice is available at the entrance of the lake for feeding the fishes). The major highlight of the lake is definitely paddle boating. Lady Hydari Park: Named after the first lady of the state and wife of the Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari Park is a japanese styled garden. There is also a small lake with ducks and colourful fishes.  It is an ideal place to visit with children because there is a nice playing area for them. The museum and the mini zoo inside the park premises makes for a good learning experience. Spread Eagle Falls: The Spread Eagle Falls are considered to be the widest waterfall in Shillong. The scintillating waterfall is also known as Sati Falls or Urkaliar because of the belief that Ka Liar slipped into it. The majestic waterfall gushes down steep hills, towering three sides into a massive pool of water which is ideal for the tourists to sit and lounge by. The Spread Eagle Falls, which looks like an eagle with its wings spread wide (hence the name), is a popular picnic spot. Police Bazaar: Police Bazar is the major market of Shillong. In addition to an array of restaurants, hotels and big brand stores, the Police Bazaar also has a flea market popular for its traditional handicrafts stores, exquisite Meghalaya merchandise, regional apparels, junk jewellery and the like. Elephant Falls: Named after an Elephant like stone at its foot, the Elephant Falls are amongst the most popular falls in the North-East, situated next to Shillong. It is a tourists' paradise with three layers of the falls accessible from different vantage points. The first of the three waterfalls is tucked between the dense trees and is very broad. The second waterfall reduces to thin strands of water and is almost negligible in winters due to the receding water levels. The third and the most visible waterfall is the tallest with clear water flowing like a sheet of milk on the dark rocks in the backdrop. Out of the three, the third waterfall tends to strike the visitors as the most impressive.  Mawlynnong: Mawlynnong is a small village situated around 90 km from Shillong in the East Khasi Hills. It is widely popular as the cleanest village in Asia. Mawlynnong offers some of the most picturesque natural beauty with lush green valleys, crystal clear water in the river, an abundance of flowering orchids hanging from the trees and extremely clean roads. Apart from its cleanliness, Mawlynnong is also famous for its living root bridge which is one of the most popular attractions in Meghalaya. Mawsynram: Acknowledged as the wettest place in the world, the mesmerizing village of Mawsynram, located 61 kms south of Shillong is a nature lover's delight and the perfect destination for a weekend trip. Many Shillong tour packages include a day trip or 1 night stay in Mawsynram. The village is well known for its huge formation of a stalagmite, which takes after the shape of a 'Shivalinga'. Cherrapunji: Earlier the wettest place on the Earth, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, also known as Sohra, is known for its double-decker living root bridge. Located around 50 Kms from Shillong, it is included in many Shillong tour packages. Other natural attractions here include cave formations such as the Mawsmai Caves and Krem Phyllut. The misty valleys and the waterfalls in the region make a long drive through Cherrapunji ideal for those who love road trips.  Kaziranga National Park: Home to the largest population of the one-horned rhino on earth, Kaziranga National Park is one of India’s national treasures. Since it is located around 185km from Shillong, some Shillong holiday packages include a trip to this amazing wonder.  Here, a wide variety of fauna thrives including the one-horned rhino, Asiatic elephants, wild water buffalo, leopards and Royal Bengal Tigers. Kaziranga National Park is also listed officially as a Tiger reserve and is home to one of the world’s largest population of tigers.

Things to Do in Shillong

Boating & Water Sports at Umiam Lake: A leisure boat ride should never be missed at Umiam Lake. Boating is one of the most preferred activities in the region and visitors can choose between Group, Family, Couple and Solo boat rides between 9:00 AM and 05:00 PM at costs starting from INR 20. Adventure seekers can satisfy their craving for adventure sports at the Water Sports Complex by the Umiam Lake that has provisions for Solo boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing. Trek to Laitlum Canyons: Perched on the East Khasi Hills, Laitlum Canyons is a less explored but one of the most picturesque tourist and trekking destinations in Shillong. This exotic viewing site offers the best panoramic views of Meghalaya embraced by the majestic hills and valleys. To reach the viewing spot, a short 2-kilometre trek has to be undertaken. One can also choose the longer path to reach the top. There is also a challenging, yet interesting trekking opportunity for the adventure lovers and trekkers down to the Smit village, which is about 6 kms away from the Canyons. There are other small trails and paths that lead to tiny slate-roofed homes, perched at great heights.  David Scott Trail: Named after David Scott, a British officer, the David Scott Trail is an old and one of the most popular trekking routes in Meghalaya. It is a 16 kilometres long trek which stretches from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. The trek can be done from either side, but it is commonly attempted from the Mawphlang side since it makes it a less ascending trail. The trail is not well marked and one can take the help of locals for directions. Mountain Climbing at Diengei Peak: Situated on the western side of Shillong, is 6200 ft in altitude, this peak is just 200 ft shorter than the tallest peak in Shillong, Shillong Peak. For a height of about 1000 ft, the gradient of this peak is very steep and precipitous which makes for excellent mountain climbing. Other adventurous sports like rock climbing and rappelling can be done here. If you are an adventurist, visiting here should be on top of your list of things to do in Shillong. Angling at Dawki: A small border town in the Jaintia Hills, Dawki and its famed river Umngot is a must visit if in Meghalaya. Sandwiched between India and Bangladesh, Dawki is a major center of trade between India and Bangladesh. The city becomes a hotbed of tourist activities especially during the spring months as it hosts the boat riding competition on the Umngot River. The surrounding greenery, the cold water of the river and the beautiful suspension bridge on the River Umngot make Dawki a place worth a visit. Angling is another popular activity to try at Dawki.

Altitude Acclimatization: Shillong's higher altitude can lead to altitude sickness for some travelers. Tour packages are designed to help you acclimatize gradually. They plan your itinerary in a way that you ascend gradually, allowing your body to adjust to the change in altitude safely. This reduces the risk of altitude-related health issues and ensures a more comfortable journey. Transportation: Shillong's public transportation options are limited, and the region's roads can be rough. Tour packages often include private vehicles and experienced drivers who are well-versed in navigating the challenging terrain. Having reliable transportation ensures a comfortable and safe journey, especially on winding mountain roads. Customized Itinerary: Tour operators can customize your itinerary based on your preferences and interests. They consider the challenges and opportunities Shillong presents, allowing you to explore the region while staying safe and comfortable. Whether you're interested in cultural experiences, adventure activities, or scenic beauty, they can tailor your trip to match your desires. Accommodation: Finding suitable accommodation in Shillong, particularly in remote areas, can be challenging. Tour packages typically include pre-booked accommodations, ensuring you have a comfortable place to stay throughout your journey. This eliminates the stress of searching for lodging, especially during peak tourist seasons. Local Guides: Many tour packages provide local guides who are not only knowledgeable about Shillong's history, culture, and traditions but also speak the local language. Having a guide enhances your overall experience, allowing you to connect with the local community and gain insights into the region's unique heritage.

‘One Of The Worst Things I’ve Had’: Food Critic Keith Lee Shocks Fans When Michigan Restaurant Leaves Him Gagging and Repulsed, Owner Defends Recipe Amid Backlash

Food critic Keith Lee and crew have run into their first major meal blunder amid their “FamiLee Food Tour,” which is giving several states a chance at redemption.

The trek has already seen the former MMA fighter revisit California, Las Vegas, and Detroit following last year’s successful excursion to try out local restaurants in major cities across the country.

Recently, while in Southfield, Michigan, Lee was literally gagged by a bite of food that has become a viral clip on social media. In his critique, Lee said that he received a DM requesting he give Lillie Belle Cuisine a try.

shillong food tour

He obliged and spent $90.63. He noted that the hour and a half wait time was “extensive,” considering that his family only purchased three plates, which consisted of lamb chops, turkey chops, fried turkey chops, chicken wings, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, greens, and cornbread.

Even before getting to the moment that has the Internet buzzing, he warned, “I’ve always stood on honesty and transparency, but at some point coming up, I wasn’t able to be as constructive as I would have liked to be, but my intentions were honest, and I repeat as always, I don’t mean no harm. This is one of the most roller coaster reviews I’ve done.”

@keith_lee125 #doordashpartner Lillie Bells taste test 💕would you try it ?💕 #foodcritic @DoorDash ♬ original sound – Keith Lee

Lee proceeded to taste test a few of the meat selections before dipping into the sides, in particular the greens. Almost immediately, an expression of disgust washed over his face, and within seconds, he had opened the car door to spit out the food.

“To be honest with you, that’s one of the worst things I’ve had in a long time. It’s extremely pungent, it’s strong, it’s a taste that don’t taste like greens. I’ve no idea what that is, to be honest with you. I don’t mean no harm, but that’s a zero out of ten if you ask me. To be honest with you, I don’t really have an appetite to try anything else,” said the TikTok star.

His followers were gobsmacked by his reaction. “I’ve never seen Keith repulsed by anything, those greens must have been atrocious,” wrote some in the comment section. Underneath the post, a second user said, “Oh I ain’t never seen him react that way he reacted to the greens bro ended the review early gahlee.”

Another person tweeted , “They might as well close up shop now, because that place is done.” Although a third individual comically wrote , “Baby when they say you put your foot in them greens they do not mean your actual foot.”

@lilliebellscuisine Its all good @Keith Lee thanks for stopping by! Our greens are one of our top selling sides 😉. #foodtiktok #foodreview #badreviews #collardgreens #collardgreenschallenge #foodporn #foodie ♬ Funny Song – Funny Song Studio & Sounds Reel

The establishment mostly appeared to take the poor review in stride, as they captioned a post, “Its all good Keith Lee thanks for stopping by! Our greens are one of our top selling sides.” In the video, a cook is shown placing two large posts of greens on the stove, proving that Lee’s disapproval was not stopping them from fulfilling orders.

In their comments, people inquired about the type of meat they used, and some even suggested that maybe the leafy offering was spoiled. Lille Belle responded to one person who questioned if maybe Lee simply got a bad batch.

“It’s very unlikely. They were cooked that day and we tasted them before they were sent out. Everyone’s palate is different,” they wrote.

@keith_lee125 Familee Redemption Food Tour Talk 💕 would you try it ? 💕 #foodcritic ♬ original sound – Keith Lee

Staff also made it known that after being in the business for some time, they developed “tough skin.”

That remark and others did not go over well with some who perceived their responses as proof of how “pressed” the establishment is for customers. They hit back with, “I believe you’re taking it the wrong way which is ok. It’s ok to engage in conversation. It’s SOCIAL media lol. Some of the comments are thought provoking.”

Lee has more stops to be made, including Atlanta , which notoriously went left when his review yielded death threats for his family. He has already forewarned the Southern city that his family will have armed security, but that he will come in peace.

He had previously been warned by Nigel Douglas, the owner of The Real Milk and Honey, who told a room full of people that he would serve big name celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyoncé before he would serve regular, everyday customers, i.e. being one of the everyday customers.

Former Boy Scout volunteer sentenced to 22 years in prison for hiding cameras in camp bathrooms

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A former Boy Scout volunteer has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for hiding cameras in a bathroom at a Missouri camp.

A federal judge on Thursday also ordered David Lee Nelson, a 41-year-old from Redmond, Washington, to pay more than $60,000, with some of the money going toward counseling for the victims. Some of them described at the hearing being fearful and unable to trust because of what happened.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Nelson placed the cameras in paper towel dispensers in July 2021, positioning them so they would capture a shower stall and other parts of the bathroom at the S Bar F Scout Ranch in St. Francois County.

The camp is about 80 miles (128.75 kilometers) south of St. Louis.

Scouts were cleaning restroom stalls with a leader when one of the cameras was discovered. A search ensued, and another camera was found. Leaders then called law enforcement.

Nelson pleaded guilty in January to two counts of production of child pornography and two counts of attempted production of child pornography.

Once released from prison, he will be on supervised release for life, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

The focus of the art tour in Milan is Lucio Fontana, one of Italy’s most revolutionary modern artists, known best for his slashed canvases. Art historian Olimpia Isidori has created a fascinating tour tracing Fontana’s story from his move to Milan as a child from Argentina, his studies at Brera Academy and his ultimate rejection of his prestigious Art Academy education to forge his own path. The tour includes a stop at a cafe frequented by Fontana, the art supply shop where he got his materials and a walk through the Brera Academy, where he studied in the late 1920s under the symbolist sculptor Adolfo Wildt. Fontana was the first known artist to slash his canvases – which he said symbolised an utter rejection of all art theory.

Prada Foundation, Milan

Continuing with modern art, Fondazione Prada is one of the most beautiful museums in Milan (designed by Rem Koolhaus). The current exhibition features Pino Pascali (on until 23 September 2024), an artist who is not so well known outside of Italy. It is a stupendous retrospective by an artist who had a very short career (he died tragically in 1968 in a motorcycle accident at the age of 32). Considered to be part of the Italian Arte Povera (Italian: literally “poor art”) movement that took place between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, Pascali was hugely influential, and this retrospective demonstrates why. Curated by Mark Godfrey, the show includes 49 works drawn from Italian and international museums, and private collections. Taking place over three buildings in the museum, this is a must see.

Nari Ward installation at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan

Pirelli HangarBicocca , which used to be a Pirelli tire factory, was converted into 10,900 square metres of exhibition galleries in 2012. Currently on show is Nari Ward, the Jamaican born American artist, who has recreated his installation Super Stud which he first made in 1994. Running until 28 July 2024, it is an enormous installation (in an enormous hangar), and features vast, colorful stringed nets suspended overhead, walls of discarded wooden pallets, bits and pieces of buildings, broken pianos, and curtains made of bottles and Budweiser cans. It is a cacophonous work using raw, found and ready-made material, that reminds us of the Arte Povera ideas you can see in Pino Pascali’s work.

'The seven heavenly palaces' by Anselm Kiefer is displayed at the Hangar Bicocca Contemporary Art ... [+] Museum in Milan, Italy.

One of the big draws at HangarBicocca is a permanent installation by the German artist Anselm Kiefer: a gasp out loud kind of work. It was created as a temporary work for the opening of the museum in 2004 but was so beloved by the Milanese that they decided to make it permanent. It consists of seven towers - each weighing 90 tons and rising to heights of between 13 and 19 meters, created from reinforced concrete using shipping containers. The towers symbolise the mystical experience of the ascent through the seven levels of spirituality in the ancient Hebrew Book of Palaces/ Sanctuaries , which dates back to the 4th-5th centuries A.D. Art can sometimes be overwhelming and sometimes, it is supposed to overwhelm. Art can also make one feel small, and again, it is sometimes meant to. Kiefer’s work at HangarBicocca does both those things, with a truly monumental work that is of Biblical proportions.

Milan, Pinacoteca Di Brera, The Marriage of the Virgin, 1504, by Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520), oil on ... [+] panel.

The Brera museum is the largest classical art museum in Milan, whose highlights include The Lamentation of Christ (1480) by Andrea Mantegna, with its famously extreme foreshortening, and a sublime Raphael, Marriage of the Virgin (1504), which places the architectural perspective (a new Renaissance trick) to the forefront leaving poor Mary and Joseph as just bit-players. There is also Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus (1605-6), a masterful demonstration of chiaroscuro and flailing hands, a later copy (by Caravaggio) of the one in London’s National Gallery.

Caravaggio 'Basket of Fruit' at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan

And speaking of Caravaggio, the bad boy of the art world can be found in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, a less visited museum than the Brera but with just as many iconic works, we find his Basket of Fruit (1599), considered one of the first examples of still life in European painting. The hyper-realistic basket seems to teeter on the edge of the picture-space, in danger of falling out of the painting and into the viewer's space instead.

The other great masterpiece here is the largest Renaissance cartoon that has survived to this day and was made by Raphael as a preparatory work for his work The School of Athens (1509-11) in the Vatican.

Finally, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana (your ticket gets you into both) houses the most extensive collection of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, the Codex Atlanticus . A rare chance to see his notebooks close-up on display. And don’t miss Leonardo’s rather lovely portrait of a musician (c. 1483–1487) tucked away in the basement!

The Last Supper

'The Last Supper', 1494-1498 at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan

One can’t do an art visit to Milan without seeing one of the most famous paintings in the world, Michelangelo’s masterpiece, The Last Supper, the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples . On the wall of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the mural was commissioned as part of a scheme of renovations to the church and its convent buildings by Da Vinci's patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Although you can try to book tickets on the museum’s website, they are sold out months in advance. A better option is to book a tour with one of the numerous guides, thus securing access. A good choice is the tour company, Get Your Guide , who offer a Milan Guided Walking Tour plus Last Supper Visit.

Where to Stay

Hotel Principe di Savoia. Milan. Italy.

The chic five star Principe di Savoia , part of the Dorchester Collection, offers a quiet location near the Porta Nuova district, with a free car service to the historic center and the ultimate luxury stay in Milan. Open since 1927, this is one of Milan’s grand historic hotels. The common areas include attractive Art Deco features that will take you back in time while the guest rooms feature an appealing blend of 19th-century décor with contemporary touches including heavy Italian drapes, lavish wallpaper and beautiful ceramic tiling in bathrooms. The spa on the top floor offers gorgeous views across the city and the lavish breakfast is one of the city’s finest.

For smaller budgets, the four star NH Milano City Life is a large business friendly hotel with spacious, airy rooms, a substantial breakfast buffet and a rooftop pool beside a metro. Or, within easy walking distance of the city center’s main attractions, Sonder Missori is a chic choice, with 40 nicely appointed modern rooms.

Where to Eat and Drink

At Principe Savoia, Acanto Restaurant offers a modern Italian menu in an elegant setting. Delicious handmade pasta dishes and highly creative desserts make for a satisfying dining experience.

If you’re looking for a hip venue for cocktails and tapas , the sprawling Moebius in a former textile workshop near Central station, has an industrial chic vibe. It houses a vinyl store as well as two restaurants Sperimentale and Tapa Bistrot, plus live entertainment.

Since 1911, and still in the same family, Jamaica , a bar and cafe near the Brera Museum, has been a favorite watering hole for creatives over the years, including Lucio Fontana, Ernest Hemingway and Allen Ginsberg.

These RI chefs have tasted the world. How you can join them on a culinary tour.

shillong food tour

Food and travel are an intoxicating combination. Imagine how tempting trips planned with local food stars could be on destinations ranging from South Korea to Portugal.

Club Adventures, AAA’s small-group adventure tour operator, has teamed up with Providence and Rhode Island chefs, restaurateurs, and beverage experts to offer curated food tours starting in August and running into next year. The concept is to see the world through a local lens with a guide who knows all the best places to eat and drink.

Of the 13 food and drink trips, some are close to home including New York City and Austin, Texas. Others are to islands including the Azores and Sicily. Mexico, Spain and Germany during Oktoberfest are other destinations. One trip offers a gluten-free and vegan adventure in Italy.

The trips will have an average size of 14 travelers. They range in time from 4 days to 10 days with prices from $1,999 to $7,979.

Bethany Hodge's 15 years in the travel industry have included designing and operating culturally immersive small group trips. Now, as head of product for Club Adventures, she is launching the new tours.

But it was a conversation with Bethany Caliaro, owner/manager of both Oberlin and Gift Horse in Providence , that planted the seed for the program. Hodge was headed to Mexico with her husband Brian and Caliaro had just returned from a trip there. She shared her list of restaurants, bars and specific dishes for the couple to try.

"I’ve been watching the food and hospitality industry in Rhode Island become a national leader in innovation, community, diversity and sustainability – all values that I use when designing Club Adventures tours," she said.

"Every one of her suggestions elevated our travel experience, and I realized that the insight and guidance of a food professional could really turn a fun trip into a memorable adventure," said Hodge.

With consumer interest in culinary travel on the rise, Hodge knew tours that showcased these mutual values could be a hit. She first pitched the idea to Caliaro and Jen Davis, who manages the beverage program at The Eddy and Durk's  Bar-B-Q , both in Providence. They connected Hodge to more of the local culinary community.

"Every single establishment that I spoke with was in," said Hodge.

Each chef/bartender/business owner has been involved in curating the itinerary, leading to an exclusive experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the market.

"While chef-led tours are certainly being done in the travel space, I believe this is a first to ever showcase a city’s leaders in the culinary space all at once as a unified portfolio," Hodge said.

"It really speaks to the community and creativity of Providence," she said.

She hopes to create even more trips for 2025 with more leaders in the Rhode Island hospitality scene, she said.

The trips and guides

The cultural exploration and food adventures will be led by an impressive group including James Beard nominated chef Ben Sukle of Oberlin and Gift Horse. He will lead a September tour to Northern Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.

“I am incredibly excited to join everyone and experience Trieste and its surrounding cities and environs," said Sukle. "All of the nuances of the lifestyles and culture there are behind how I cook and why I love to cook."

Caliaro will lead a fish-to-fork dining adventure in Sicily. Led by Oberlin chef Chris Pfail, the art of making kimchi is on the menu for a South Korea adventure.

Jen Davis leads two trips, one to Austin, Texas, to explore the barbecue and distillery scene and one to New York City to enjoy the city's cocktail scene.

Spain will be part of a Basque Adventure led by The Eddy's Luke Mersfelder and Britt Simons.

Mexico City and Oaxaca will be explored in a trip led by Joaquin Meza of Dolores . Germany’s Oktoberfest will be celebrated with Brendan Kennedy of Proclamation Ale in Warwick.

Robin Dionne & BJ Mansuetti who operate the RI VegFest and GFree Fests will lead the Gluten-Free and Vegan tour of Italy.

Pizza Marvin's Robert Andreozzi is another James Beard nominated chef and he will be on the Portugal & Galicia Food Adventure.

Only one guide is from outside the Rhode Island culinary restaurant world but she is no stranger to locals. Maria Lawton is the host and guide of "Maria's Portuguese Table" which is presented by WSBE Rhode Island PBS. She will lead an Azores Food Adventure and Portugal Wine & Food Adventure.

EXCLUSIVE: Get your first look at the upscale menu in Churchill Downs premium spaces

The premium views of the new paddock at Churchill Downs come with a Kentucky Derby menu meant to both comfort and dazzle guests.

“No matter what happens, if you win big or lose big at the Derby … you’re going to win with the culinary experience," said Robert Lopez, head chef for this year’s Kentucky Derby and senior executive chef for Levy , the Chicago-based food and beverage provider for Churchill Downs.

It takes a culinary team of more than 4,000 people to keep the food flowing at more than 40 premium spaces throughout the historic racetrack during Kentucky Derby week.

“Each space has its own unique feel,” said Kenneth Hardiman , Levy regional executive chef. “We've kind of tailored (the menu) to that particular location.”

The Courier Journal was invited to taste a sampling of a few of these spaces, including the new Woodford Reserve Paddock Club and Club SI, both of which are located steps from the horse stalls in the new paddock. Matt Winn’s Steakhouse , which is open year-round, was also on the tasting tour.

The menus in these more curated spaces aim to highlight locally grown and raised food, including grits from Weisenberger Mills , meats from Berry Beef, cheeses from Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese , and breads from Blue Dog Bakery and Café , to name just a few.

In his first year overseeing culinary operations at Churchill Downs, Lopez said he’s tried to bring his “modern, new-age” style to a time-honored tradition.

“What I like to do is take things and make them into something that no one has seen before…or not seen in that way,” he said. “I like to turn heads."

Here’s what we tried:

What food is served at the Woodford Reserve Paddock Club during Kentucky Derby week?

The most premium space at the new paddock is the Woodford Reserve Paddock Club, where two-day tickets for Oaks and Derby days range from roughly $11,000 to $16,000.

The space holds about 300 people, offering a select group access to the highest tier of dining the track has to offer.

“We only procure hundreds of pounds instead of thousands or tens of thousands of pounds, which some of our other menus do,” Lopez said, leading to the “best ingredients for the best experience.”

The Courier Journal sampled from the menu offered Opening Night through Thurby. One-day-only menus are set for Oaks and Derby days.

A twist on the classic Caesar salad included grilled lettuce dressed with radish, shaved Parmesan Reggiano, pickled white anchovy, and house-made lemon and roasted garlic Caesar dressing and croutons.

The “Louisville rolled oysters” were a fried yet light bite when paired with a zippy cocktail sauce, and the hardwood smoked smothered pork chop was dramatically presented bone-in atop a garnet yam puree.

Bourbon and smoked rosemary chicken “pops” were easily snackable and a farro and baby rocket salad made for a refreshing bite, with its goat cheese, tomatoes, and mustard vinaigrette.

The space features a lower-level speakeasy and a bourbon tasting room that will offer an exclusive bourbon and chocolate pairing session to about 100 people between Oaks and Derby days.

The club serves up its exclusive menu in three different ways. Smaller, sample-sized portions allow for a taste of many of the space’s offerings. Clubgoers can also have larger portions as they make their plates, like a buffet, or order their food a la carte for family-style table service.

What food is served at Club SI during Kentucky Derby week?

Another high-end experience in the new paddock is Club SI, which gives guests an up-close look at the paddock while surrounded by iconic Sports Illustrated magazine covers and photos.

The Courier Journal tried a cool and refreshing sweet corn shooter, an inventive sip that acts as a palate cleanser between bites.

Thinly sliced bourbon barrel smoked beef tri tip was served alongside a Kentucky chop salad loaded with toppings, including white beans, country ham, apple, pickled onion, oven-dried tomatoes, and a sorghum red wine vinaigrette.

Much like the Paddock Club, Club SI ticketholders will have fresh, custom menus for Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby days.

“A lot of people say memories are built off of senses, and I can tell you one thing, there’s a lot of senses going on with this experience,” Lopez said. “Everything from sitting at the glass watching the actual athletes, the horses, 2 feet away from you … all the way until you walk into the club and all the smells hit you. Just creating those memories through taste, through smell, through something that you may never get to taste again.”

What is on the Derby week menu at Matt Winn’s Steakhouse at Churchill Downs?

The on-premises restaurant, Matt Winn’s Steakhouse , opened in 2020 and gives a taste of Churchill Downs year-round.

Elevated custom furniture and finishes fill the restaurant, which is named for Colonel Martin J. “Matt” Winn , the track’s legendary president and general manager for decades in the early 1900s.

The Courier Journal sampled the shrimp and grits, which let the Weisenberger grits and Argentinian red shrimp shine with understated flavors of white wine, garlic, and parsley.

A visit to the steakhouse of course meant beef, specifically, the carved prime rib roast spiced with rosemary and peppercorn served with whipped potatoes, asparagus, and the homemade “Finish Line” steak sauce.

An old fashioned smoked with cedar-wood and bourbon-soaked maraschino cherries and a house-made orange simple syrup accompanied the trip to the on-premises steakhouse.

A sweet trio of espresso chocolate mousse, banana pudding, and berry trifle served in small cups rounded out our visit.

While the specific menu items the Courier Journal tried are tied to Derby Week, Lopez said they are indicative of the level and variety of offerings throughout the year.

Nicki Minaj pulled out all the stops with surprise guests at her New York homecoming 'Pink Friday 2' tour stop but no one expected her grand reveal -- the one and only Cyndi Lauper !!!

The iconic singer shocked the Barclays Center, full of Barbs on Wednesday night, as Nicki brought the house down performing “Pink Friday Girls.”

Cyndi’s style is still as eclectic as ever … she hit the stage with a multi-colored graffiti jacket and her signature spiky hairdo.

Nicki’s record samples Cyndi’s classic “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” and it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment to see her step in with her own golden vocals!!!

When it was all said and done, both artists shared a big hug and a moment of mutual respect and appreciation ... but, ultimately, Nicki bowed graciously to thank her special guest for joining her onstage. She also told the crowd what an inspiration Cyndi had been to her.

Young M.A. , Kai Cenat and Pepa from Salt N Pepa were also in the building.
