Le Tour de Gironde à Velo

From bordeaux to beaches and vineyards, le tour de gironde à velo is a lovely bike route that takes in all the highlights of the gironde department of south-west france..

Distance: 480km Difficulty: Easy - there are some hills on linking roads and through vineyard areas but this is an achieveable route for all abilities – the coastal sections and the bike path out of Bordeaux are especially flat 

Le Tour de Gironde à Velo is a very special bicycle touring route – and one we can highly recommend it because it's in our own backyard. Freewheeling France lives just east of the route and we know this area well. While we haven't cycled Le Tour de Gironde à Velo in its  entirety, over the years we've ridden a very fine chunk of it on day rides with the kids.

Le Tour de Gironde à Velo basically links parts of the following routes to make a regional loop: Canal des 2 Mers from the Atlantic Coast to the Med , the EuroVelo 3 pilgrims' route  and the EuroVelo 1 Atlantic Coast .  

The full 480km Tour de Gironde à Velo circuit starts in the beautiful city of Bordeaux – worth a day or two on its own on or off the bikes – before heading out along  the magical Roger Lapebie bike path to Sauveterre . Here is our family on a day ride one autumn (or was it late winter?)  

On this section out of Bordeaux, we would highly recommend also taking  this detour (our own route) from Bordeaux to Saint-Emilion  to see the ancient UNESCO wine town.

Saint-Emilion really is lovely and you will see its iconic Roman church and the views from the town square on postcards as you make your way across Gironde.  Try and go early in the day if you're riding in summer (to beat the crowds) or stay overnight so you can enjoy the atmospheric cobbled streets after dark. 

On our day rides, we always make time for a lemonade and a snack in the gardens at  Les Cordeliers  (below).

Back on the main route ...

After Sauveterre, the route sticks to the Bordeaux-Toulouse Canal de Garonne route  (part of the two canals route to the Med) until it reaches Fontet. Here, it heads west to join the EuroVelo 3 route. This is a lovely route through the vineyards and forests of the  Landes de Gascogne, and an area  not often explored by cycle tourists. I expect that to change as the EV3 becomes more popular.

The route passes just south of Sauternes – the sweet white wine capital of France. The roads around here are gorgeous with vines layering the hillsides. Consider staying overnight in Bazas, with its Gothic cathedral and Roman history. From here you can continue on to the Atlantic Coast EuroVelo 1 route via the Bazas-Mios section of the route (save time for oysters in Arcachon and Dune of Pilat, the largest sand dune in Europe).

This stretch up the coast is on dedicated bike paths and forest trails. See here for more on cycling around Lacanau .

Do not ride by the lake at Carcans without taking a short detour for an ice-cream at  Le Salon de la Glace ( 142 Avenue de Maubuisson, Carcans). We have spent many summer days at Carcans and nearly every one of them has involved ice-cream.  

It's then up along the coastal path through the Medoc to the ferry for Royan – don't worry about the vineyards as you head north as you come back via the chateaux of Blaye before taking the local ferry across to Margaux if you are riding the full loop in a clockwise direction. Note that outside peak periods, some vineyards will require reservations for wine-tastings. Not all double as tourist attractions ilike is often the case in Australia or California. Mostly you will meet the winemakers or their families, so call/email ahead if there are chateaux in particular you would like to visit.   

From there it's back into Bordeaux via the lake.

Getting to Bordeaux

Bordeaux is linked to Toulouse, Paris and farther afield by fast TGV trains, and there are also trains down the coast to Biarritz and the Spanish border, as well a north to La Rochelle. The Gironde à Velo route is well-connected by local TER trains, so you can skip sections if you need to. For example you could catch a train to/from Langon, Arcachon or the Medoc and make a shorter circuit  or one-way ride if you did not have time for the entire route.  See here for Nouvelle-Aquitaine train info .

L'avis des voyageurs

Globalement nous sommes plutôt déçu par l'ensemble du parcours (nous n'avons pas fait la remontée du bassin d'Arcachon à Soulac). Peu d'intérêt touristique (seulement 2 belles étapes à vélo), pas d'accueil en camping en logement équipé pour 1 seule nuit, beaucoup de passages sur des routes partagées. Nous pensons qu'il y a d'autres parcours plus beaux à faire en France que le tour de Gironde à vélo. Cependant les girondins sont très accueillant.

Un périple à vélo fort sympathique à travers différents paysages. Nous sommes parti à deux début Octobre et nous avons doublé les étapes. 1ere étape de Bordeaux à La Réole (78km) Piste cyclable à travers champs et forêt. Nous avons dormi en gîte à Fontet. 2 ème étape de La Réole à Salles (94km) où nous avons voulu nous restaurer à Saint Symphorien. Juste un restaurant bar d'ouvert sur la place mais avec un très mauvais accueil... Je ne le recommande pas ! Trajet à travers la campagne de Gironde pour nous poser au camping du Val de l'Eyre. Très bon accueil :) 3 ème étape de Salles à Lacanau (77km) 4 ème étape de Lacanau à Royan (83km) Grandes lignes droites monotones pour cette journée surtout celle de 20km! Nous avons pris le bac à Soulac pour rejoindre Royan où nous avons dormi à l'hôtel faute de trouver un camping ouvert à cette époque de l'année. Accueil chaleureux à l'hôtel Les Croisettes. Nos vélos ont pu dormir au chaud. 5 ème étape de Royan à Braud et Saint Louis (82km) Magnifique paysage de la côte jusque dans les terres. Petit arrêt au village pittoresque de Talmont. Nuit au camping municipal de Braud et Saint Louis avec aussi un accueil chaleureux. 6 ème étape de Braud et Saint Louis à Bordeaux (72km) à travers les vignes du Médoc où nous avons pris le bac à Blaye.Un arrêt à la citadelle s'impose. Un magnifique parcours varié entre la campagne, les forêts de pins, la mer et les vignes.

On s'est régalé. L'une des meilleure boucle que nous ayons faite! Pistes cyclables, magnifiques paysages, hébergements et restaurations faciles à trouver, ... nous nous sommes régalés. Je recommande à tous les cyclotouristes que je croise, elle est facile pour débuter la rando et agréable pour des initiés. Vivement que nous puissions la refaire dans l'autre sens. Routard + EuroVélo 6

Globalement, c'est un joli parcours avec des paysages variés (vignes, châteaux, dunes, plages, Garonne...) et des choses à visiter. C'est accessible au plus grand nombre car il y a peu de relief, sauf autour de La Réole et Talmont où c'est plus vallonné. De plus, on est quasiment tout le temps sur des pistes cyclables goudronnées, à l'écart des voitures. Par contre, l'itinéraire n'est pas toujours bien balisé. Heureusement, il est commun à la Vélodyssée et la Scandibérique. Je conseille de télécharger le tracé en gpx. Nous avons fait le tour de la Gironde en 1 semaine (2 adultes), 551,5 km. Voici nos étapes : 1-Lacanau Lac-Porges : 30.5km. Piste goudronnée sous les pins. C'est roulant sauf quand il y a beaucoup de monde à aller aux plages (je déconseille en plein été). Petites pauses baignades à la mer bien agréables. Nuit au camping La Grigne. 2-Porges-Hostens : 85 km. Après Arcachon, le parcours est assez monotone (ancienne voie ferré), on ne voit pas beaucoup de paysages. ça manque de panneaux pour aller voir des points d'intérêts ou voir le bassin d'Arcachon. A Biganos, on a eu de mal à trouver notre chemin, pas de panneaux Tour de Gironde. A Hostens, il n'y a pas de camping. Nous dormi au centre équestre qui accueille les cyclotouristes. La base de loisirs est sympa, on peut s'y baigner, mais il ne faut pas la louper ! Encore une fois, ça manque de panneaux indicateurs à partir de la voie verte. 3-Hostens-La Réole : 84km. Le parcours devient plus joli à partir de Bazas (jolie ville). On quitte un peu la voie verte, les paysages sont plus variés et on commence à voir des vignes, le canal, la Garonne et de jolis villages mais ça grimpe plus. A voir en chemin : Villandrault, Bazas, Uzeste, La Réole. Nuit au camping municipal de La Réole : parfait pour les cyclotouristes. Peu cher, au bord de la rivière, près du centre-ville pour faire des courses, boulanger qui passe le matin. Très bon accueil. 4-La Réaole-Créon : 57 km. Parcours sur voie verte monotone. A voir : abbaye de La Sauve-Majeure Nuit au camping de Sadirac 5-Créon-Blaye : 81km. Jolis passages dans les vignobles bordelais. La traversée de Bordeaux se fait bien. C'est bien fléché. C'est dommage, Fort-Médoc n'est pas bien indiqué. Ce fort Vauban est pourtant intéressant à visiter. Attention, on ne peut pas rejoindre directement l'embarcadère pour le bac vers Blaye. ça rajoute quelques km et des côtes. Les Bacs pour traverser la Garonne sont gratuit pour les vélos mais pas pour les cyclistes. Pensez à attacher vos vélos avec une sangle ou tendeur car ils sont justes poser contre la rambarde,si ça bouge, ça risque de tomber. Nuit au camping de Blaye : super bien situé, à l'intérieur de la Citdelle, C'est très chouette. Attention : en semaine l'accueil du camping n'ouvre que de 10h à 18h... 6-Blaye-Mortagne : 73 km. Sur cette portion, beaucoup de lignes droites en plein vent, et des chemins en mauvais état (en terre et cailloux) qui obligent parfois à descendre de vélo. Par contre, les petits ports au bord de la Garonne, sont très mignons, avec tous les services (toilettes, eau, restaurants...). Ex : Pont Maubert,Vitrezay... Nuit au camping à la ferme La Gravelle (accueil vélo et accueil paysan): très sympa, accueillants, avec piscine, vente de produits fermiers, restauration... 7-Mortagne-Soulac : 61 km. Quelques portions peu roulantes avec des chemins en cailloux et du dénivelé. Le village de Talmont est très charmant à visiter. Attention, il faut laisser votre vélo à l'entrée. Les paysages avec des falaises blanches sont très beaux dans ce coin. Attention, à Mesher, on ne peut pas faire la route de la corniche dans ce sens. On se retrouve en sens interdit. C'est dommage car cette partie est très belle. Vu la largeur des trottoirs et stationnements, ça serait peut-être possible d'avoir une piste cyclable dans les 2 sens. Le contraste est assez saisissant entre le calme des petits ports de la Garonne et les plages très touristiques de Royan. Autour de Soulac, c'est très touristique. Nous avons eu du mal à trouver un camping pour les cyclotouristes. Nous avons eu la chance finalement de trouver une place au camping municipal. 8-Soulac-Lacanau lac : 80km. On retrouve ici la piste goudronnée sous les pins de la Vélodyssée. Bien agréable quand il fait chaud. La route des phares près d'Hourtins est assez vallonnée. Fin de l'itinéraire. Retour à notre voiture que nous avions laissée sur un parking public à Lacanau lac. La boucle est bouclée. Nous sommes repartis contents de cette balade à vélo qui nous a permis de découvrir les jolis coins de la Gironde.

Réalisé en août 2021 de La Réole à Blaye, à 2 familles ( 4 adultes et 6 ados de 11 ans à 17 ans ). Itinéraire très varié, 3 types d'ambiance : landes de Gascogne, le Medoc océanique et le surprenant estuaire de la Gironde ( sauvage et magnifique ). Très bien fléché, bien aménagé. De belles rencontres de cyclotouristes, de professionnels du tourisme. A faire et à refaire. On a choisi comme point de départ La Réole pour sa gare SNCf qui nous a laissé la liberté d'avancer au rythme de nos envies. 2 adultes sont allés en bus + train de Blaye à la Réole pour récupérer les voitures. Nous n'avons pas réserver les campings pour être LIBRES. A 10 personnes et au mois d'août nous avons toujours trouver un emplacement en camping.

Globalement plat. Bien fléché. Joli parcours.hebergements disponibles avec un excellent accueil et des gens adorables. À recommander.

Seul bémol. Expérience détestable avec le loueur les Cycles du Canal à Castets. À éviter.

Choix de ce tour car c'est une boucle que c'était mon 1er voyage solo et comme je connais du monde en gironde je pouvais être sauvée en cas de galère. J'ai fais le parcours indiqué, visité les lieux notifiés. Les évaluations sont bonnes en kms et en temps.Les lieux remarquables sont sympas.Le fléchage plutôt bien indiqué .J'ai bien aimé le parcours juste un peu monotone de Bazas à Belin Beliet .J'ai bien aimé la remontée jusqu'à Soulac qui mérite qu'on s'y arrête. La passage du bac sympa et la descente vers Blaye très très sympa et variée. A partir de Blaye j'ai choisi le retour sur Bordeaux par la route de la corniche plutôt que de retraverser comme indiqué sur le tour et j'ai bien aimé de jolis paysages,une route avec très peu de voitures,le village de Bourg bien joli.

The genesis of the project

The Gironde is a department crossed by three major routes : EV1-La Velodyssey (EV1), the Canal of the two seas by bike and the EV3- La Scandiberic . These make it possible to capture 1 8% to 20% of bicycle tourists who devote their holidays to discovering an itinerary. In addition, the occasional use of bicycles during the holidays is booming, leading to an increase in local rental and demand.

There was therefore an intermediate niche to position the Gironde as a cycling destination in its own right , particularly on the French market. The creation of a Tour of Gironde by bike could therefore be envisaged by relying on the great wealth of the network of trails developed by the Department for many years: these infrastructures already made it possible to do the "tour of the Gironde by bike" crossing the majority of the tourist areas. .

This new positioning therefore aimed to capture French customers first of all, who choose their destination for cycling over long distances, but also the local customers , including the Girondins themselves, who will want to discover the Gironde in stages, at their own pace. Since then, customers of foreign origin are also present on the course following the promotional operations carried out (Belgium, the Netherlands, and first contacts with American professionals). 

Finally, to facilitate the promotion of the route, 10 must-see sites were identified on the course, including 60% inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO . Their notoriety makes it possible to capture visitors and then make them discover other attractions of the territories crossed. The crossing of the different Bordeaux vineyards is an important factor of attraction for the Tour de Gironde à Vélo (Entre-deux-Mers, Médoc, the vineyards of Blaye and Bourg).

The site France Cycling Tourism allows cyclists to organize their cycling holidays. It highlights all the major routes that cross France. the Gironde Bike Tour is one of these.

The Tour de Gironde à Vélo is regularly highlighted by articles in the form of focus, favourites, or thematic stays. Promotion is also provided in English, German and Dutch.

Tour de France 2023 Route stage 7: Mont-de-Marsan - Bordeaux

It’s the 57th time since 1947 that the biggest cycling contest in the world finishes in Bordeaux. But, remarkably, the last finish dates back to 2010. So that’s 13 editions without a Bordeaux finish on Le Tour. The stage winner succeeds Mark Cavendish, who outgunned Jean Dean and Alessandro Petacchi in 2010.

Eddy Merckx is the rider with the most Tour de France stage wins in Bordeaux, namely four in the years 1970-1974.

The route of the 7th stage is a sprinter’s dream. The only hurdle is the Côte de Béguey – 1.2 kilometres at 4.4% – with its summit almost 50 kilometres before the finish.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

Jonas Vingegaard’s Tour de France defence in doubt after Basque crash

The Tour de France champion, Jonas Vingegaard, was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone after a serious crash on stage four of the Itzulia Basque Country.

Vingegaard also suffered several broken ribs from the high-speed accident that also included Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic among a group of 12 affected riders. “It was a nasty crash, but fortunately he is stable and conscious. He remains in hospital as a precaution. Thank you for all your messages,” Vingegaard’s team Visma-Lease a Bike said in a statement.

Six riders went to hospital after the incident, including the Australian Jay Vine, who was diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine. “Fortunately, there were no neurological problems and there are no other serious injuries or skull injuries,” Vine’s UAE Team Emirates said in a statement.

Evenepoel’s team Soudal-QuickStep revealed the Belgian must undergo surgery on a fractured collarbone and fractured scapula. Roglic was the least affected of the big-name trio involved and he headed for the team car having received medical attention. The incident took place when the peloton was descending around a tight right-hand bend with less than 40km of the stage to go, one riding sliding out of the road and on to the bank, sparking a chain reaction as more followed.

The race was then neutralised until the finish, with only the six riders who had been at the front being allowed to sprint for the finish to try to win the stage, victory eventually going to the underwhelmed South African Louis Meintjes, who admitted it was a hollow triumph.

“It’s a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery,” Mattias Skjelmose, who took the overall race lead from Roglic, said at the finish. “My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader’s jersey.”

Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 but with this year’s event starting on 29 June, doubt now hangs over his ability to defend his crown.

Tour de Houston bicyclists urge for long-term measures to improve rider safety on city's roads

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Thousands of bicyclists took off from downtown Houston Sunday morning for the 17th annual Tour de Houston , a ride that travels through some of the city's most scenic areas.

Participants were in good spirits as they were greeted with beautiful weather at the starting line on Avenida de las Americas, right next to Discovery Green. Mayor John Whitmire joined Apache Corporation, the event's sponsor, to send off each of the three groups, riding in the 20, 40, and 60-mile routes.

The ride almost didn't take place this year.

Back in January, the Mayor's Office of Special Events preliminarily canceled the 2024 event due to a lack of funding. Whitmire said this was done without his consultation and when he found out, he explored other options to keep the event going.

The longest route takes participants through Houston's historic neighborhoods, vibrant districts, and parks before going all the way down to Clear Lake Park in Seabrook. The intersections along the way were not closed, but manned by traffic officers.

While the event allowed bicyclists to ride safely on Houston's roads on Sunday, some riders shared with ABC13 some of the long-term measures they'd like to see to make the city more bike-friendly.

"If they could connect the bike trails together to make even long trails, that would be the best thing the City of Houston could do to improve biking in the city, in my opinion. Connect the widest trails, like White Oak and Spring Creek. Those kinds of mega trails," Ulises Martin said.

"A clearly marked lane for bikes. We do know that we have to share with cars because the City of Houston is so car-oriented. Make a better effort of campaigning to let motorists know to be aware of cyclists," Phi Nguyen said.

Data obtained by ABC13 shows 13 cyclists died in accidents in Harris County in 2023. ABC13 asked the mayor where city officials stand on the issue of bicyclist safety.

"We're growing at a rapid rate. Our general mobility is very important. We've done great things along Allen Parkway. We need to make sure that there's a safe passage in Memorial Park. So there's a lot of things we still have to do," Whitmire said.

Meanwhile, organizers said proceeds from Tour de Houston will go towards the city's RE-Plant Houston Program, which helps plant thousands of trees and reforest parks and greenspaces.

Jonas Vingegaard has been taken to hospital along with leading Australian rider Jay Vine after some of the world's best cyclists suffered injuries in a mass crash at high speed in the Itzulia Basque Country race in Spain. 

The reigning double Tour de France champion Vingegaard was reported to have suffered a broken collarbone and several broken ribs but was "conscious" after the alarming crash that threatens his hopes of a famous treble in July.

Vine, last year's Tour Down Under winner, also ended up crashing heavily in a concrete ditch and was taken away by ambulance.

The 28-year-old was later diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine, with no other major injuries or head trauma. 

It was a disastrous day for another modern-day great too, with Remco Evenepoel, the 2022 world champion, managing to walk away from the crash despite suffering what his Soudal-Quick Step later confirmed was a fracture to his right collarbone and to his right shoulder blade.

He will need surgery on Friday in Belgium.

Giro d'Italia champ Primoz Roglic, who had been the overnight leader, also abandoned the race after giving a thumbs-up to cameras from the team car to show he was OK.

In all, 12 riders near the front of the peloton were involved in the crash, which happened with about 35 kilometres left of the fourth stage between Etxarri Aranatz and Legutio, in northern Spain.

The leaders were making a sweeping right-hand turn on a slight but swift descent, with some sliding off, sending others off the road into the ditch.

Denmark's Vingegaard, who has been in spectacular form and was favourite for the 2024 Tour de France, had to be carried to the ambulance in a neck brace and needed oxygen after treatment at roadside by doctors.

The race was then neutralised until the finish, with only the six riders who had been at the front being allowed to sprint for the finish to try to win the stage, with victory eventually going to the underwhelmed South African Louis Meintjes, who admitted it was a hollow triumph.

The crash, which featured three of the world's most outstanding riders in Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Roglic, was also a huge blow for 25-year-old Vine, who has graduated from riding a turbo trainer in his living room to being a peloton star.

He had begun the week-long race on Monday with an exceptional time trial that had left him second behind only Roglic at that stage and revealed afterwards that the Itzulia had been only a late addition to his schedule.

Earlier on Thursday, Roglic's teammate at BORA-Hansgrohe, Lennard Kamna, was reported to be in a "stable condition" in intensive care after he had collided with a car during a training ride in Tenerife.

Juan Ayuso wins accident-plagued Tour de Basque Country in northern Spain

EIBAR, Spain (AP) — Spanish cyclist Juan Ayuso won the Tour of Basque Country after taking the lead during the sixth and final stage on Saturday.

Ayuso, who is considered the rising star of Spanish cycling, started the stage just four seconds behind overnight leader Mattias Skjelmose. Ayuso won the race by 42 seconds over stage winner Carlos Rodríguez while Skjelmose completed the podium.

Rodríguez finished the 137-kilometer (85-mile) mountainous ride that started and finished in Eibar in 3 1/2 hours, with Ayuso just behind.

The race in northern Spain was plagued by accidents that knocked out several of cycling’s top riders, including two-time reigning Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard.

Vingegaard broke a collarbone, several ribs and suffered a collapsed lung in a crash with other riders on Thursday. As of Friday, Vingegaard remained in a hospital in the Spanish city of Vitoria. His Visma-Lease A Bike team did not update his status on Saturday.

Belgian Remco Evenepoel also broke a collarbone and his right shoulder blade and was scheduled to undergo surgery from that crash during stage 4.

Another crash on Friday resulted in Mikel Landa, the race’s runner-up from 2023, breaking his right collarbone and two ribs.

Ayuso was second in the Tirreno-Adriatico last month and third in the 2022 Spanish Vuelta.

Gironde : le maire de Pauillac agressé dans un restaurant alors qu’il dînait en famille

Un homme a été conduit au CHU de Bordeaux après une altercation avec Florent Fatin, le maire centriste de Pauillac, samedi soir.

L’altercation s’est déroulée à deux contre un, samedi soir. Florent Fatin, le maire centriste de Pauillac, une commune du Médoc (Gironde), dînait en famille dans un restaurant qu’il avait privatisé quand deux individus ont surgi sur le seuil de l’établissement pour lui chercher querelle aux alentours de 20 heures. La voiture de l’édile, de marque Tesla et aisément identifiable dans ce village de 5000 habitants, stationnait au coin de la rue, selon nos sources.

Sur le pas de la porte où le tenancier les retenait, les deux hommes ont commencé par insulter et menacer l’élu, jusqu’à ce que le politique sorte dans la rue pour les sommer de quitter les lieux. Alors qu’il venait de franchir le seuil du restaurant, l’un des deux individus s’est jeté sur lui, lui saisissant le bras avant de le frapper violemment au visage. Le second, lui, a fondu sur le politique, les poings serrés.

Le maire s’est alors emparé d’une chaise en plastique sur la terrasse pour parer le coup, avant de frapper son agresseur avec. Un geste pour lequel il fait désormais l’objet d’une plainte en gendarmerie de la part de cet habitant. Ce dernier, qui tentait encore d’en découdre quand il a été maîtrisé par l’élu, a été conduit au CHU de Bordeaux, le visage en sang, quelques dizaines de minutes plus tard.

Plainte contre plainte

Une enquête a été ouverte par la gendarmerie de la Gironde pour préciser les circonstances exactes de cette rixe, tandis que le parquet a été saisi afin de déterminer les poursuites pénales qu’elle devrait engendrer.

Le maire de Pauillac, lui, a demandé la protection fonctionnelle auprès de la préfecture de la Gironde et a déposé plainte contre ses agresseurs pour menaces et coups.
