MS Titanic 2 Review

Review of ms titanic 2.

MS Titanic 2 cruise ship is among the world's most-anticipated newbuild vessels on order , fascinating and inspiring millions worldwide. The Titanic replica is a stunning shipbuilding project to revive the ocean liner RMS Titanic . The idea for the new ship belongs to one of Australia's richest people - the mining magnate Clive Palmer.

On April 30, 2012, at a special press conference, Clive Palmer astonished and shocked the world by announcing his intention to build a full-scale replica of RMS Titanic. The new 56,000- GT ton ship will have 12 decks , 835 passenger staterooms and max capacity 2435 passengers plus 900 staff and crew.

The maiden voyage of Titanic II is planned to leave not from Southampton to New York (like the original liner), but from Jiangsu China (north of Shanghai ) to Dubai UAE . The new ship is intended to have modern passenger evacuation systems, digital navigation, latest radar systems and satellite communications, Helideck, top-deck gardens. Some relatives of passengers who died on RMS Titanic condemned the project to build a replica ship as insensitive. Blue Star Line was flooded with inquiries from potential customers, some offering up to GBP 640,000 to book Titanic 2's inaugural cruise.

The replica ship was expected to enter service in 2025.

IMPORTANT/NEWS : On March 13, 2024, at a press conference in Sydney NSW, Clive Palmer announced that his company Blue Star Line relaunched the shipbuilding project for Titanic II and plans to contract a shipyard in 2024 and start the project in 2025-Q1. For the delays he blamed the COVID crisis and assured that now he has "enough money to build the Titanic ten times over”. According to the billionaire, shipbuilding tenders would start in June (2024), with shipyard contracts signed by December. The project's estimated value would be between USD 0,5-1 billion. The Maiden Voyage is planned for 2027-Q1.

Titanic 2 ship construction and technical details

The new Titanic 2 ship was expected to be launched in 2018 - 106 years after the original ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. The original plans of Blue Star Line were to launch the replica ship in April 2012, to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking.

The project was first pushed back to 2016, and then to 2018. In September 2018, Clive Palmer confirmed in London England that construction works have been recommended and that the new liner will be nearly identical to RMS Titanic.

The new ship will be 883 ft (270 m) long, just 2 inches longer than the original and 12 ft (3,7 m) wider in order to increase stability. The shipbuilder is CSC Jinling in Nanjing (the capital city of Jiangsu province, central-eastern China). The company is state-owned and has a shipyard with two drydocks.

The boat's external look is an exact copy of the namesake, but as a 21-st century cruise vessel, it will be fitted with top-notch marine systems and equipment to ensure the industry's highest safety standards. The original steam plant (based on coal-fired boilers and steam engines) is replaced by a diesel powerplant and diesel-electric propulsion.

Next video animation shows RMS Titanic's powerplant and how it works.

The new Titanic ship is powered by four Wartsila diesel engines - two model 12V46F (12-cylinder, combined output 28,8 MW) plus two model 8L46F (8-cylinder gen-sets, combined output 19,2 MW), to total power output 48 MW. The propulsion system is based on 3x azimuth thrusters (360-degree rotating propellers) with combined output 30 MW.

The cruise ship has a 2-sectioned Navigation Bridge - forward (designed as an original replica) and aft (high technology wheelhouse). Marconi Room (communication facility on RMS Titanic) will be replicated, but not functional.

A new extra "Safety Deck" between original decks D and C is projected for 18 lifeboats and the safety chutes. It was not decided whether there will be garage or cars on-deck storage on board. New Titanic 2 ship will have all the safety certificates, including of course SOLAS. The building cost of the new liner was estimated to be around GBP 400 million.

Despite the planned maiden voyage in 2016, then in 2018, the vessel's construction didn't start. Blue Star Line's website was closed in 2018 and Clive Palmer abandoned its trademark. In 2017, Palmer was reported to be in ill health, suffering from memory lapses.

Decks and Cabins

Just as the original liner, Titanic 2 is planned to have 3 passenger classes, with the options of guests to sleep 6 nights in a same-class cabin or 2 nights in each class. Surprisingly, the 3rd class is attracting attention globally, being one of the most searched. Bathrooms are designed to be common (shared). There was an idea the ship to provide costumes (typical for each class cabins) complementary to all passengers.

Staterooms as amenities and decorations are planned to be very similar to those of RMS Titanic. The custom-made premium furniture will be made of high-quality woods (mahogany, walnut, sycamore, satinwood). First-Class cabins feature oak paneling. Second-Class cabins are with 2 beds (sofabed and fold-away). All staterooms have a wardrobe, dresser, seating area, steward call buttons.

New lower deck cabins are designed with modern amenities, but all other staterooms and all public premises (deck D and above) are precise recreations of the original ship.

The boat has 12 decks , of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 7 with cabins ( 835 passenger staterooms ).

Shipboard facilities

The new "Safety Deck" houses the Casino Lounge, Retail Shops, Hospital (Infirmary) and the 400-seat Theater (main show lounge). The company V-Ships Leisure is contracted to provide all onboard entertainment. Other planned facilities include 3 dining rooms (including First-Class Dining Saloon colored in white), a la carte restaurant, Cafe Parisien (patisserie), promenade deck (outdoor walking area encircling the ship), glass-dome covered Sun Deck (sunbathing area with 2 swimming pools, jacuzzis, changing cubicles, showers), Spa complex, Turkish baths, gymnasium, squash court, smoking lounge (blue and red-colored), several bars.

RMS Titanic's lounges and public spaces will be recreated with regard to the smallest details, including timber cladding walls, custom-made furniture, original artworks, light fittings, crystal chandeliers.

Shipboard dining

Onboard dining menus were developed by 68 chefs. Clive Palmer hosted gala events in NYC, London and Macau, offering VIP guests the 11-course dinner to be available at the new Titanic.

The list of those meals included:

  • Course 1: Oysters
  • Course 2: Consomme Olga
  • Course 3: Scottish Balik Salmon w Mousseline Sauce, Cucumber
  • Course 4: Saute of Chicken Lyonnaise, Vegetable Marrow Farcie, Parmentier Potatoes
  • Course 5: Aberdeen Angus Filet Mignons Lili
  • Course 6: Eye of Lamb Loin, Mint Sauce and Green Peas, Boiled New Potatoes

Clive Palmer's ship Titanic II

Creator of the Titanic 2 shipbuilding project is Clive Frederick Palmer (born March 26, 1954) - an Australian businessman, managing iron ore, nickel and coal holdings. Forbes Magazine estimated his wealth in January 2013 at USD 895 million.

In late-April 2012, Clive Palmer signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with one of China's largest shipbuilding companies - CSC Jinling - to construct a replica of RMS Titanic. Apart from his "Titanic 2" project, Palmer is also popular for another stunning plan - to create a Jurassic Park (with over 100 animatronic dinosaurs) in his resort in Coolum Beach - on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia. In 2013, he formed the political party Palmer United, to compete for the federal election. He was a candidate for Division of Fairfax and won the election by 36 votes.

The replica cruise liner is planned to be 100% fireproof and with an ice-strengthened hull (ice-class PC6) to withstand icebergs and any weather extremes. The maritime industry's most advanced navigation equipment and all safety standards will be implemented.

"Titanic 2 Ship" project was initially joined by 3 big companies - Deltamarin (marine design, engineering, construction support), Tillberg Design Sweden ( cruise ship design , hotel and restaurant interiors) and Lloyd's Register Group Ltd (marine and shipping services, vessel classification society). The Titanic replica project was supported by an advisory board. The ship model was tested in Germany.

In the period 2015-2018, the project was suspended because Olive Palmer was in dispute with China's state-owned CITIC Group Corporation Ltd over the payment of royalties (hundreds of millions of US dollars) to Palmer-owned companies.

On October 16, 2018, Clive Palmer (current Chairman of the Paris -based "Blue Star Line" company) appointed his nephew Clive Mensink (former director of Queensland Nickel, Townsville QLD Australia ) as project's Director and company's CEO. He is responsible for staff recruitment, crew training and contractor negotiations. Company's headquarter office (in Paris France) is scheduled for opening in March 2019.

On October 30, 2018, as "Global Project Director" ("Titanic II") was announced Ms Baljeet Singh - lawyer and former Blue Star Line employee (Project Director in the period 2012-2015). Her job is to organize and attend planning and development meetings worldwide, liaising with USCG and US Gov agencies, overseeing the cruise company's European Director. Previously, she has worked for Clive Palmer as his mining company's Legal Director.

On December 17, 2018, was announced that V-Ships Leisure Ltd (a subsidiary of V-Group) is contracted as the ship management company for Titanic 2. V-Group is vessel management and support services provider, and industry's first with a dedicated cruise ship division (V-Ships Leisure).

On November 2, 2018, was announced that Deltmarin joins again the project. After reevaluating the project, in 2020 Deltmarin started to look for a shipbuilding yard as an alternative of the CSC Jinling Shipyard (China).

Titanic Ship Hotel in China (Romandisea Resort)

RMS Titanic inspired the Chinese company "Qixing Energy Investment Group" to build the famous ocean liner as a full-scale hotel ship replica. The order was placed with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group.

The Chinese group manages energy factories. It announced the ship hotel project as a theme park - officially called "Romandisea Seven Star International Cultural Tourism Resort". The resort park is sized 6,7 km2 (2,6 ml2). It is located in Da Ying county (Sichuan Province, China) and includes attractions like spa resort (with Turkish baths), artificial beach, amusement park (with medieval castle replicas, Venetian church replica, clock tower, large swimming pool). Next image shows the resort's amusement park.

However, the resort's main attraction is the Titanic ship-hotel in life-size. The project's cost was nearly CNY 1 billion (USD 165 million / GBP 105 million). The construction was scheduled to start in 2014 and the opening was initially set for 2016.

The full-size replica ship is located over 1200 km (745 ml) from the sea (approx 114 km / 70 ml from Chengdu ). It has length 269 m (882 ft) and width 28 m (92 ft). It also has original features - like theatre, ballroom, swimming pool, staterooms.

The hotel is floating (docked at Qi River / moored permanently within a reservoir). China's Titanic replica has a capacity for 1500 guests per day.

Qixing revealed the plan to rebuild the luxury ocean liner in January 2014. Tickets cost from CNY 3000 (GBP 350) per cabin per night. Suites cost from CNY 100,000 Yuan (GBP 11,580). The onboard entertainment includes Vegas-style show productions, ballroom dancing, pool deck parties, food menus with items from the original liner.

China's Titanic ship-hotel was designed in 2 years, with designer and technician services provided by USA and UK companies using the blueprints of RMS Olympic. The groundbreaking ceremony was in March 2015. The shipbuilder started manufacturing parts for the liner in May 2015. The Chinese Titanic had its keel-laying ceremony held on November 29, 2016. The event was attended by Lord Peter Mandelson (British politician). The vessel was re-scheduled for completion in 2018.

On-site assembly was planned for May 2015 but started in late-November 2016. In December 2017, hull's construction at the assembly site was completed. In September 2017, ship's construction was half complete, with built 6 out of all 9 decks. In January 2018 was announced that due to financial problems (increasing steel prices), the project is pushed back until 2019.

Around 50,000 tons of steel were used for its construction – more than the steel used for building an aircraft carrier. The replica ship includes many original features (Atrium's grand staircase, dining rooms, passenger cabins, swimming pool, boiler room 1, engine room, engine replica, mock-up steam engine) plus some new features (ballroom, cinema/theatre lounge). Originally was planned an audiovisual technology at ship's theatre to simulate the iceberg collision that resulted in the sinking, but the idea was later scrapped. Ship's disaster simulator allows "passengers" to feel the shipwreck atmosphere in 6D.

RMS Titanic

The maiden voyage of RMS Titanic started on April 10, 1912, at noon. The intended distance of the journey from England was approx 5350 km. Unfortunately, the liner didn't finish its first and only voyage. On April 14, after receiving 6 warnings for floating sea ice, the crew sighted an iceberg. Travelling near the max speed and unable to turn quickly enough, at 23:40 (ship time) Titanic struck the iceberg. In less than 10 seconds the hull was ripped opened (below the waterline) for a length of 91 m. Titanic sank 2 hours and 40 min later (at 2:20 ship time / 5:18 GMT) on April 15, 1912.

The tragic story of the Titanic ship is described in movies due to the fact that it combines money, ambition, love, courage and loss. The story was dramatized a few times. The first successful movie came in 1958, “A Night to Remember” (IMBD). It was an adaptation of Walter Lord’s book of the same name, published in 1955 and it was based on the stories of sixty-three survivors from the Titanic disaster. Without any doubt, the best movie, based on the Titanic story, was made by James Cameron. The movie “Titanic” (IMBD) came in 1997. The story focuses on the love between two fictional characters from different social classes: Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The exact number of passengers and casualties is still a matter of discussion. Some (mainly business magnates) cancelled their trip just before ship's departure. Some travelled under false names and were added twice in the casualties list. Some died soon after the disaster due to injuries, hypothermia and other illnesses. Officially, Titanic left Ireland with 2224 passengers. About 1514 of them died and 710 were saved.

Exhibitions of different objects from the liner can be seen in museums such as Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, Nova Scotia, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the SeaCity Museum in Southampton.

Next YouTube video is dedicated on RMS Titanic's maiden (and last) voyage.

Next, you can watch "Did Titanic Really Sink" - representing the conspiracy theory that the sisterships RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic were “switched” in an insurance fraud scheme.

Unfortunately, in 2020, the intriguing and most provocative "Titanic Conspiracy Documentary" (2012 movie) was removed from YouTube.

Billionaire Clive Palmer Relaunches Plans to Build a Replica of the Titanic

  • March 16, 2024

Titanic II

The Australian billionaire Clive Palmer and his company Blue Star Line have relaunched the plan to build the Titanic II, a replica of the ship that sank in 1912.

The billionaire and former member of the Australian parliament made the announcement on Thursday, March 13, at a press conference in Sydney.

According to the Guardian , Palmer revealed plans to secure a shipyard and start building the vessel “far, far superior than the original” early next year.

Palmer has already started and stopped the Titanic II project twice before (in 2012 and again in 2018) and blamed the pandemic for the delays. However, this time, he assured the public that he had “enough money to build the Titanic 10 times over”.

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” said Palmer. “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.

“All you need to be happy, I’ve found in my life, is to have someone that loves you, somewhere to sleep at night and enough for a good meal.

“Beyond that, the rest is an illusion – it’s like playing golf.”

Palmer said tenders for the construction of the vessel would go out in June, with contracts signed by December. According to the billionaire’s estimate, the project would cost between $500 million and $1 billion.

He also revealed that the Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin supported the project.

Journalists at the press conference were shown a five-minute video of what all nine decks of the Titanic II would look like, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

The Titanic II will be 269 meters (833 feet) long and 32.2 meters (105 feet) wide with a capacity for 2,345 passengers in 835 cabins. Nearly half of the cabins will be reserved for first-class passengers.

Third-class passengers will dine on stew and mashed potatoes at communal tables in a dining room reminiscent of the original ship. However, a spokesperson noted that alternative meal options will also be available for passengers seeking a less traditional experience.

What Is The Titanic II? Billionaire Clive Palmer Revives Plan For Replica Ship

A mining billionaire and former member of the Australian parliament has again relaunched his plan to build a replica of the Titanic that is “far, far superior than the original” and will carry passengers around the world in "style and luxury."

The Titanic II replica ship imagined by billionaire Clive Palmer.

Clive Palmer, the world's 732nd-richest person as of Thursday, this week held a press conference in Sydney to say his dream of building a ship called the Titanic II is alive and well, and he plans to secure a shipyard and start building the vessel early next year.

Palmer, who has already started and stopped the Titanic II project twice before, said the plan is more real than ever before because "I've got more money now," the Guardian reported .

Plans for the ship from Palmer's company Blue Star Line would essentially recreate the exact ship that sank in 1912, including the famous grand staircase, a smoking room, theater, casino and dining rooms for passengers of various classes, including a third-class cafeteria that will serve stew and mash at long tables for those interested in the most authentic experience.

A comprehensive 3D rendering of the ship and its nine decks shows plans to build 835 cabins—383 for first class, 201 for second class and 251 third-class rooms—and the 2,345 passengers on board would be encouraged, but not required, to dress for the early 1900s.

The maiden voyage of the Titanic II, scheduled for June 2027, would retrace the steps of its predecessor and sail from Southampton, England to New York.

Ticket prices for a trip on the Titanic II have not been announced.

$500 million to $1 billion. That's how much Palmer expects it will cost to build the 56,000-ton Titanic II, according to the Guardian .

Crucial Quote

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” Palmer reportedly said . “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.”

Clive Palmer speaks at National Press Club on July 7, 2014 in Canberra, Australia.

Forbes Valuation

Palmer, 69, is worth an estimated $4.3 billion as of Thursday. He is the 13th- richest person in Australia . Palmer started Mineralogy, an Australian mining company, in 1984 and now has a portfolio that includes Waratah Coal and Queensland Nickel. Palmer owns iron ore tenements in Western Australia that are mined by Hong Kong-based Citic Ltd, and his fortune soared several years ago when a court dispute with Citic ended in Palmer's favor—resulting in a generous flow of royalties. Disputes between Mineralogy and Citic are ongoing . In addition to the mining business, Palmer is a real estate investor and politician. He was a member of the Australian parliament from 2013 to 2016 and has been a large donor to various national campaigns. He founded the United Australia Party , which was registered in 2018 and campaigned for bans on lockdowns and vaccine mandates amid the Covid pandemic. The party was deregistered in 2022.

Key Background

Palmer first announced plans for the Titanic II project in 2012 but it was called off in 2015 amid the dispute with Citic, which the Guardian said "starved" the project of the funding it needed. Three years later, Titanic II was relaunched but called off again, a move Palmer this week blamed on the pandemic and cruise industry shutdowns. This time around, the project has partners in ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin, V.Ships Leisure and Tillberg Design, the company behind ocean liners Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2. Deltamarin is reviewing the plan for the project to ensure it complies with modern-day safety and construction regulations. The onboard experience will be authentic, Blue Star Line says , but modernizations behind the scenes will include upgrades to navigation technology and modern safety procedures. The ship will have a diesel engine but still feature four smoke stacks like the original, coal-powered Titanic.

While Blue Star Line hasn't provided specific route details Titanic II will undertake after its maiden voyage, the ship is physically smaller than the majority of today's trans-Atlantic cruisers but largely on par when it comes to capacity. Celebrity Cruises, for example, has more than a dozen ships that sail on ocean-crossing voyages that have capacities between 2,158 passengers and 3,400. The same is true of Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise liners. Cunard, known for its trans-Atlantic crossings and operator of the Queen Mary 2, mostly sails ships with a capacity between 2,081 and 2,996. Plans call for the Titanic II to be 882 feet long and 105.6 feet wide. Today's largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , is 1,197 feet long and 213 feet across, twice as wide as the Titanic II. The Queen Mary 2 is 1,132 feet long and 135 feet wide.

When is Titanic II going to be built and what will it look like?

It’s 112 years to the day since the Titanic sank in the Atlantic, taking with it around 1,500 lives.

The tragedy has long held a fascination for people across the world, with no fewer than 31 films made about the liner’s doomed voyage from Southampton to New York .

They, of course, include James Cameron ’s 1997 megahit staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet .

Last month, Australian mining billionaire Mike Palmer announced that his plans to build a Titanic replica cruise ship called Titanic II are back on track after delays caused by Covid.

The project, managed by Mr Palmer’s company Blue Star Line, was launched in 2012 but stalled due to financial difficulties.

In 2018, it was announced building work would resume , but when the cruise industry shut down during the pandemic the project once again came to a halt.

In March, Mr Palmer told a press conference at Sydney Opera House they had ‘re-engaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic II to life’.

When will Titanic II be completed?

Mr Palmer said construction would start January or February next year and that the ship is due to be completed by June 2027.

He told reporters: ‘The government lockdowns sent the cruise industry into a long-term shutdown but shipping is back in full business with passenger numbers now surpassing pre-Covid levels.

‘We are getting the best ship-builders, designers and engineers in the world back on deck to build Titanic ll.’

What will it look like?

Mr Palmer said the ship will offer passengers an ‘authentic Titanic experience’ but will be ‘far, far superior’ to the original.

It will feature the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel , but crucially (for anyone worried about the vessel meeting the same end as its predecessor) with modern safety procedures, navigation methods and technology as well as plenty more lifeboats.

‘The essence of this venture is to offer passengers an unparalleled journey back in time, immersing them fully in the opulence and splendour of life aboard the original Titanic, thus bridging a century with a voyage of unparalleled elegance,’ Mr Palmer said.

The ship’s maiden voyage will follow the route the original ship never completed, Southampton to New York, but will then travel the globe.

The vessel will weigh around 56,000 tons, measure 269 metres, feature nine decks and 835 cabins and cater for up to 2,435 passengers.

Just like its namesake, Titanic II will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd class cabins.

The new ship will also boast a replica of the bridge where the boat was controlled, but with 21st century technology.

It will be powered by a diesel engine and will feature four smoke stacks like the coal-powered Titanic.

Mr Palmer said: ‘Millions have dreamt of sailing on [the Titanic], seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true.’

Last week it was reported an optical illusion caused by freak weather  could have played a vital role in the Titanic tragedy.

It’s been suggested a mirage could have obscured the massive iceberg that struck the ship, leaving it impossible to spot in time.

The Titanic II project isn’t sunk yet, but can it float?

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has revived his pet project, a working replica of the doomed cruise liner Titanic, after a favourable court ruling. But given the sketchy details around the project and Palmer’s history of over-reaching, should Titanic II be taken seriously?

titanic cruise new

Back in 2015, it looked like one of the more eccentric ideas in the history of shipbuilding was going to sink without a trace. The Titanic II project, the brainchild of billionaire Australian businessman and politician Clive Palmer, was announced in 2012 and aimed to create an authentic replica of the original Titanic cruise liner, which sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in April 1912, with more than 1,500 passengers and crew losing their lives.

The cruise liner, which was due to make its first voyage in 2016, was planned as a detailed replica of the original vessel, with impeccably recreated interiors and hull form, albeit slightly larger than the original and incorporating modern safety technologies and standards, including more than enough lifeboats and rafts to evacuate all passengers and crew in case history should repeat itself.

While the media clamoured at the ambition of the idea and sceptical commentators wondered if it was anything more than a publicity stunt from a businessman with a history of ego-driven bad ideas , Palmer appeared confident that the vessel would be built. Blue Star Line – its name harking back to the White Star Line that built the original Titanic – was established to steward the A$700m project to completion, and reputable contractors such as Deltamarin and Lloyd’s Register Marine were brought on board to create and review designs for the ship. CSC Jinling shipyard in China was mooted as the site for the construction of the vessel.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty,” Palmer said in 2012. “ Titanic II will be the ship where those dreams come true.”

Three years later, the dream had soured.

Deadlines had already slipped to the extent that the 2016 launch date was already out of reach, but in 2015 a dispute over mining royalty payments between Palmer’s company Mineralogy and Chinese firm Citic reportedly drained the project of funds, putting it on indefinite hold.

The revived Titanic II project

In September 2018, Titanic II seemed to experience a miraculous revival. The Supreme Court of Western Australia ruled in 2017 that Citic was obliged to pay nearly $150m in unpaid royalties, which apparently left enough in the pot to bring Palmer’s passion project back to life.

In late 2018, Blue Star Line announced that Deltamarin had recommenced work on the project, and in December V.Ships Leisure was contracted to support the development of the build.

“We are looking forward to assisting Blue Star Line with our expertise in project support, new build supervision and ship management,’’ said V.Ships Leisure director Per Bjornsen. “This process showcases the full spectrum of ways in which ship management can add value from the very beginning in the management of a cruise vessel, long before the first steel is even cut.”

Palmer also made headlines last year when he announced that the European headquarters would be established in Paris rather than London due to concerns over Brexit, and that the European operation would be overseen by the somewhat worryingly named Clive Mensink.

Should Titanic II be taken seriously?

Even if Palmer’s Titanic II appears to have a tentative green light again, there’s little reason to believe that this project will ever see the light of day. Conflicting media reports over basic information such as whether or not construction on the ship has actually started, and where it will be built – some reports have said construction is already underway , while others have noted that the upcoming build is expected to take place in China , and still others have quoted Blue Star Line as saying the ship will likely be built in the Northern hemisphere .

Blue Star Line is doing little to provide clarity on key details, and appears to have deleted from its website many news releases quoted in media reports about the project. Even a widely-reported new launch date of 2022 was contradicted by the company, which confirmed to The Guardian in October that no dates had been announced, no construction had taken place and no shipbuilders had been contracted.

Beyond the lack of credible confirmation that the project is remotely ready to move forward, there are reasons to doubt that even a ship outfitted exactly as Palmer has described – from the recreated gymnasium to the ballrooms and Turkish baths – would actually find a market. No information on pricing is available, but Blue Star Line seems set on reviving period-specific details that are completely out-of-step with modern cruise expectations.

Air conditioning will apparently be added, but there will be no televisions or internet access, with the idea being that passengers who have no doubt spent thousands will be happier dressing up in period outfits, which will reportedly be provided in every room.

Second and third-class cabins circa 1912 will be incorporated, with narrow bunk beds and wash basins replacing the bathrooms and sea views that modern cruise customers expect, despite Palmer’s insistence is that third class is “where the fun will be”. Perhaps he imagines the cheerful working-class dancing scenes with Jack and Rose from the 1997 movie. By the by, Palmer has also said ‘Palmer Pictures’ is looking to outdo James Cameron’s classic with a Titanic movie of his own, a romance filmed onboard Titanic II .

The ultimate fate of the project remains to be seen. There are certainly viable ways of reviving the Titanic as a non-functional museum or centrepiece tourist attraction, as a theme park in China’s Sichuan province is attempting to do. But with Palmer’s history of over-reaching and the sketchy details of the build, it’s impossible to escape the conclusion that this is the vanity project of a billionaire Titanic obsessive looking to recreate a bygone relic of colonial elegance, without much thought put into whether the rest of the world is as interested as he is. Titanic II might not be sunk yet, but it would be a minor miracle if this project turns out to be seaworthy.

Titanic II luxury vessel to set sail in 2022

A billionaire is setting out to build the ship.

A replica of "the ship of dreams" -- also known as Titanic -- will sail the high seas in the year 2022.

An announcement about the luxury Titanic II was first made in 2013, but work was suspended due to financial constraints. Now that those financial matters have been resolved, building has recommenced on the vessel, according to a media release from Blue Star Line.

“The ship will follow the original journey, carrying passengers from Southampton to New York , but she will also circumnavigate the globe, inspiring and enchanting people while attracting unrivalled attention, intrigue and mystery in every port she visits," Clive Palmer, chairman of Blue Star Line wrote in a statement.

The launch has been a dream of Palmer, an Australian business magnate, for years.

RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that attracted some of the richest people in the world to sail on it. On its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912, the ship left Southampton, England, with more than 2,200 people aboard on its way to New York City. Four days later, it struck an iceberg just south of Newfoundland and sank.

World's largest cruise ship that's 5 times larger than the Titanic set to make its debut

By Li Cohen

July 12, 2023 / 8:38 AM EDT / CBS News

The RMS Titanic was once considered the largest ship in the world before it met its demise in the Atlantic Ocean. Now, Royal Caribbean International has created a "first-of-its-kind" ship nearly five times that size that will soon make its debut.

The cruise ship, called Icon of the Seas, is massive – measuring 1,198 feet long with 250,800 gross tonnage. Capable of carrying 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members, the ship is equipped with 20 total decks, seven pools, and what Royal Caribbean describes as six "record-breaking" waterslides.

low-1687154368-image19.jpg

When the RMS Titanic embarked on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912, it measured more than 852 feet long with 46,329 gross tonnage. Icon of the Seas' tonnage is more than five times that amount.

The new ship will soon be ready for use, starting in January 2024, the cruise company says, after hitting a milestone last month with the successful completion of its i nitial round of sea trials . During those trials, the ship was put on the open ocean for the first time.

The ship is divided into eight primary areas :

  • The "AquaDome" sits atop the front of the ship, offering 220-degree views and a 55-foot waterfall
  • The "Suite Neighborhood" with a Mediterranean restaurant and two-floor sundeck
  • A five-deck-high open-air "Central Park" with living plant walls
  • "Chill Island" with four pools and a swim-up bar
  • "Thrill Island," featuring what the company says is the largest waterpark at sea, called "Category 6"
  • An area dedicated to families called "Surfside"
  • The "Royal Promenade" with ocean views
  • "The Hideaway," which offers 180-degree views at the back of the ship and an infinity pool

low-1683043136-rci-ic-central-park-cgi14-ret-lr-1.jpg

Icon of the Seas first opened up for reservations in October of last year while the cruise industry was still recovering from the downturn it faced during the coronavirus pandemic.  At the time, prices started at $1,537 a person, but they have since increased by a few hundred dollars.

Royal Caribbean now lists the cheapest ticket at $1,851 for an interior room on a seven-night cruise from Miami to the Western Caribbean in September 2024. The most expensive is substantially higher – $10,864 for a suite on the same cruise in March. The ship also offers a seven-day trip to the Eastern Caribbean.

And while many are excited about the chance to ride the ship to the Caribbean, calling it "stunning" and like a "scene from sci-fi movie" on social media, some others have expressed otherwise.

"Every time I see a picture of the Icon of the Seas cruise ship I am filled with an intense dread ," one person said.

" Infection of the Seas by Royal Caribbean," another person jested, seemingly alluding to past COVID outbreaks on cruise ships during the pandemic.

But for Royal Caribbean, it's all about the excitement. The day it opened up tickets for the ship in October, Royal Caribbean said it had the single largest booking day in the company's 53-year history.

"The enthusiasm and excitement for Icon are undeniable in more ways than one," Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, said in October . "The incredible response we have received from our loyal guests, vacationers new to cruising, crew members and travel partners continues to come in, and this is just the beginning. We can't wait to share more of what Icon has in store in the coming months."

When is Titanic II going to be built and what will it look like?

Concept art of Titanic II.

Titanic II

Mr Palmer said construction would start in January or February next year and that the ship is due to be completed by June 2027 .

Titanic II

What will Titanic II look like?

Mr Palmer said the ship will offer passengers an ‘authentic Titanic experience’ but will be ‘far, far superior’ to the original.

It will feature the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel , but crucially (for anyone worried about the vessel meeting the same end as its predecessor) with modern safety procedures, navigation methods and technology, and plenty more lifeboats.

‘The essence of this venture is to offer passengers an unparalleled journey back in time, immersing them fully in the opulence and splendour of life aboard the original Titanic, thus bridging a century with a voyage of unparalleled elegance,’ Mr Palmer said.

Titanic II

The ship’s maiden voyage will follow the route the original ship never completed, Southampton to New York, but will then travel the globe.

The vessel will weigh around 56,000 tons, measure 269 metres, feature nine decks and 835 cabins and cater for up to 2,435 passengers.

Just like its namesake, Titanic II will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd class cabins.

The new ship will also boast a replica of the bridge where the boat was controlled but with 21st-century technology.

Titanic II

It will be powered by a diesel engine and will feature four smoke stacks like the coal-powered Titanic.

Mr Palmer said: ‘Millions have dreamt of sailing on [the Titanic], seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty. Titanic ll will be the ship where those dreams come true.’

Last week, it was reported an optical illusion caused by freak weather  could have played a vital role in the Titanic tragedy.

It’s been suggested a mirage could have obscured the massive iceberg that struck the ship, leaving it impossible to spot in time.

New Titanic Footage Heralds Next Stage in Deep-Sea Tourism

New, high-resolution footage of the Titanic offers a glimpse into the ambitions of the deep-sea tourism industry. Tourists paid $250,000 to take a submersible to view the wreckage.

titanic cruise new

By Amanda Holpuch

New footage of the Titanic wreckage released last week by a commercial exploration company shows the doomed ship in vivid detail and highlighted that the world for wealthy tourists not only extends to space, but also the deep sea.

The one-minute clip was shared by OceanGate Expeditions, a company that takes paying tourists in submersibles to shipwrecks and underwater canyons. For the Titanic expedition this summer, guests paid $250,000 to take a submersible down about 2.4 miles to where the wreckage rests on the seabed.

Since the hulking ship was found upright and split in two sections in 1985, less than 400 miles off Newfoundland, it has captivated historians, archaeologists and others. Stockton Rush, the president of OceanGate, said private exploration was needed to continue feeding this fascination.

“No public entity is going to fund going back to the Titanic,” Mr. Rush said. “There are other sites that are newer and probably of greater scientific value.”

OceanGate has now led two expeditions to the site and has one planned for 2023. The dives last about eight hours, including the estimated 2.5 hours each way it takes to descend and ascend.

Scientists and historians provide context on the trip and some conduct research at the site, which has become a reef that is home to many organisms. The team also documents the wreckage with high-definition cameras to monitor its decay and capture it in detail.

But the high-quality footage of the ship’s bow, anchor and an anchor chain does not impress everyone.

Paul F. Johnston, curator of maritime history at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, was not awed by the footage and said that the OceanGate trips were “people paying a lot to be ballast.”

“I don’t object to this kind of commercial exploitation because they’re not touching or damaging the wreck,” Mr. Johnston said. “And it brings attention to the underwater world and to shipwrecks in general, but in my opinion, there’s not that much to be learned from Titanic that we don’t already know.”

There has been a debate for decades about who should visit the wreckage and why.

More than 1,500 of the Titanic’s passengers died, raising ethical questions about disturbing a site that may also function as a graveyard . About 700 people survived.

Many historians and scientists have also opposed efforts to pull artifacts from the site onto land. Mr. Johnston was one of several scientists to write to a court in support of the United States government’s attempt to stop an underwater salvage company from trying to recover a Marconi telegraph from the wreckage.

In May 2020 , a federal judge granted approval to the company, R.M.S. Titanic, though its plans were delayed by the pandemic. R.M.S. Titanic is now reviewing images from the wreck site to see if its original recovery plans will still work, the company’s president, Jessica Sanders, said in an email.

Don Lynch, the official historian for the Titanic Historical Society, said he did not like for Titanic artifacts to be brought up, but he was impressed with the quality of the new OceanGate footage.

“The more they photograph then probably there will be things we discover that we didn’t see before or something like that,” he said. “But I can’t say there was anything that was a real discovery now. It’s just amazing to see with such clarity.”

Most people who watch the video on YouTube, which has drawn more than 1.7 million views, will not be able to appreciate how detailed the footage is because it is in 8K resolution, which is much higher than the resolution of most televisions and computer screens.

But Mr. Rush, the OceanGate president, said that the high quality of the footage allowed researchers to get an even closer look at the site without having to go underwater. He said it could also be used to create an immersive experience with 30- to 40-foot screens, similar to the Vincent van Gogh exhibitions that project the artist’s work on walls and floors.

Mr. Rush compared the OceanGate trips to space tourism, a growing industry best known for the commercial spaceflights offered by three billionaire-led companies. He said that similar to the space industry, the commercial trips were the first step to expand the use of the submersibles for industrial activities, such as inspecting and maintaining underwater oil rigs.

“For those who think it’s expensive, it’s a fraction of the cost of going to space and it’s very expensive for us to get these ships and go out there,” Mr. Rush said. “And the folks who don’t like anybody making money sort of miss the fact that that’s the only way anything gets done in this world is if there is profit or military need.”

There are still secrets to be found on Titanic. These graphics explore them

It sank 112 years ago Monday, but our obsession with the RMS Titanic continues.

History's most famous ship slipped beneath the North Atlantic at 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912 , but we continue to explore its maiden voyage, iceberg, sinking and undersea decay through a seemingly endless stream of photographs, books , documentaries and movies , and museum exhibits.

Fascination has led to tragedy. A submersible carrying five passengers to view the Titanic imploded near the wreck , killing all aboard, in June 2023.

It also has brought technological advances. In May 2023, a new type of digital scanning, using multiple images, gave us a three-dimensional view of the ship as it would look if it were lifted out of the water .

Why are people drawn to Titanic?

"There isn’t a simple answer," says Karen Kamuda, president of the Titanic Historical Society , which operates the Titanic Museum in Indian Orchard, Massachusetts.

Those who join the society are of "all ages and occupations, and their interests are multivariable," Kamuda says. Aside from their fascination with Titanic and its passengers and crew, their curiosity might include the sister ships Olympic and Britannic, the White Star Line, artifacts, and TV and movies.

"James Cameron’s 1997 film, ' Titanic ,' opened up a brand-new interest," Kamuda says. "The internet has helped spread the story worldwide."

Here are a few things you may not know about Titanic:

Titanic traveled less than 3,000 miles

Titanic was built at the Harland & Wolff shipbuilding company in Belfast, Ireland. After outfitting and sea trials, the ship left port for her maiden voyage.

From Belfast to the fatal iceberg strike, Titanic traveled about 2,555 nautical miles, or 2,940 land miles:

April 2, 1912 | 8 p.m.: Titanic leaves Belfast, sails to Southhampton, England (577 nm).

April 10, 1912 | noon: Titanic leaves Southhampton, sails to Cherbourg, France (88 nm).

April 10, 1912 | 8:10 p.m.: Titanic leaves Cherbourg, sails to Queenstown ( now known as Cobh ), Ireland (341 nm).

April 11, 1912 | 1:30 p.m.: Titanic leaves Queenstown for New York.

April 14, 1912 | 11:40 p.m.: Titanic strikes iceberg 1,549 nm from Queenstown.

April 15, 1912 | 2:20 a.m.: Titanic sinks about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada.

Titanic's lifeboats were not filled to capacity

15-ton piece of wreckage recovered.

The largest piece of wreckage recovered from Titanic, above, is a 15-ton section of the hull measuring 26 feet by 12 feet. It's on display at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas

The hull section was part of the starboard side of the ship , between the third and fourth funnels. It was lifted to the surface in 1998.

Museums keep Titanic's memory alive

A  number of museums offer visitors a look at hundreds of objects recovered from the wreck site. Here are a few:

And if you can't get to a Titanic museum, a traveling exhibit, Titanic. The Exhibition , with 200 items, may be coming to you after it leaves New York.

Icon of the Seas: Inside the world's biggest cruise that's five times the size of the Titanic

  • Cruise ships

titanic cruise new

By Multimedia Producer Rachel Dixon

The world’s biggest cruise ship, which is five times the size of the Titanic , is to take passengers into open waters in January 2024.

Royal Caribbean International’s mammoth 'Icon of the Seas' is 365 metres long (1,200 ft) and will weigh 250,800 tonnes. In comparison, the Titanic weighed 46,329 tonnes.

While the ship's length is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall, it's the onboard extras that make this vessel truly huge.

A look inside the world's biggest cruise ship, The Icon of the Seas

When it sets sail in Caribbean waters next year, it will carry some 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew.

It has 20 decks with eight "neighbourhoods" set up to house its huge passenger load.

The boat is also home to the world’s largest waterpark at sea - which is named Category 6.

It features six record-breaking water slides sitting on the open deck and over 40,000 gallons of water will be used to fill the huge pool.

With an ice rink, restaurants, bars and clubs, the ship has more leisure activities than most British towns.

For the more daring passengers, the ship has a "sky walk" where people will be harnessed and walk along a narrow platform with nothing but the deep water below.

Royal Caribbean International’s website says "when you least expect it, the floor beneath your feet could disappear, leaving you dangling high over the ocean".

Since the huge liner was announced there has been record breaking ticket sales, according to CNN.

The ship was built in Finland, and some 2,600 people have worked on Icon of the Seas each day.

For the sea trials, hundreds of specialists were on board to assess performance over four days.

Royal Caribbean says a second set of sea trials is scheduled for later in 2023.

The firm released a statement after the ship's first sea trials to say everything went to plan.

“During her first set of sea trials, Icon of the Seas traveled hundreds of miles, during which the main engines, hull, brake systems, steering, noise, and vibration levels were all tested,” the statement said.

“Everything was done on time as outlined in the schedule, despite her departure being delayed due to wind conditions.”

The cruise will take its passengers on a seven-night Caribbean holiday from Miami all year round.

The Titanic’s Route – From Shipyard to Sinking (Via Southampton, Cherbourg and Queenstown)

The Titanic has become famous as being the ‘unsinkable’ ship that did unfortunately sink. The Titanic made many successful port stops on her trip before the accident happened where she picked up passengers and supplies.

A common misconception is that the Titanic set sail from Southampton heading to New York and didn’t visit any other ports, this is not the case. In this post we will explore where the Titanic went, what she did in each port and where she was scheduled to go.

Where Did Titanic Set Sail From?

The Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, on April 10th 1912. She was built in Belfast, Ireland, and sailed to Southampton in England for her maiden voyage. She stopped in Cherbourg in France and Queenstown in Ireland to pick up passengers, crew and supplies. Her final destination was to be New York, USA but she never completed the journey.

The Southampton – Cherbourg – New York route had become very popular by the early twentieth century. The crossing should have taken around 6 days in total.

Titanic Route Belfast, Southampton, Cherbourg, Queenstown and New York Map

The return journey should have been from New York to Plymouth in England, back to Cherbourg, and finally to Southampton.

The Titanic’s Scheduled Route

Many modern cruise ships complete transatlantic crossings regularly although the route has changed slightly. To learn more about how modern cruise ships compare to the Titanic, check out this post:

White Star Line (the company that owned the Titanic) planned to offer weekly sailings in each direction, leaving Southampton on Wednesdays and New York on Saturdays.

Both the Titanic and her sister The Olympic were scheduled to sail throughout the year, with trips booked until December.

Titanic’s First Journey – From Belfast to Southampton

The Titanic left Belfast on Tuesday 2nd April at 8pm. She arrived into Southampton at 12:00am on Thursday 4th April.

Work on the White Star Line’s state-of-the-art luxury steamship began in March 1909 in Belfast, Ireland, at the Harland and Wolff shipyards, the Titanic was designed by Alexander Carlisle. It took two years to complete the ship, the hull of which was the largest movable manufactured object in the world at the time.

On 31 May 1911, the Titanic was officially launched, first entering the water at the River Lagan.

After a series of sea trials, the Titanic, with only a skeleton crew, set sail for Southampton on 2 April 1912, seen off by thousands lining the Belfast Lough.

On the journey to Southampton Titanic recorded a record speed of 23.25 knots. The journey to Southampton was 570 nautical miles .

I Was Amazed by The Titanic Belfast Museum

Today, the Titanic Belfast visitor attraction, based next to the Harland and Wolff shipyards, tells the story of the Titanic from its conception and construction.

I visited the museum in 2021 and was blown away by the experience. The museum even has a ride in the middle! A ride! I talk more about my excursion to the museum in the video below:

Titanic’s Second Journey – From Southampton to Cherbourg

The Titanic left Southampton on Wednesday 10th April at 12pm. She arrived into Cherbourg at 8.10pm on Wednesday 10th April.

Around midnight on 4 April 1912, the Titanic arrived in Southampton , where she remained docked for a week. The crew were the first to come aboard.

Most of the crew were from Southampton, of the 685 crew members who died in the tragedy, 549 were from the city. Captaining the ship was the most senior White Star commodore, Captain Edward J. Smith seen below.

A Ship Visit With a Difference

On 5 April, the public had an opportunity to visit the Titanic, she was decorated for the occasion with flags and other pieces.

After the public had visited the ship, passengers were welcomed aboard.

At the time there was a coal strike in Britain which meant that coal had to be borrowed from other ships, including the sister ship, Olympia, so that the Titanic could begin her voyage.

At 9am on the 10th Titanic had her one and only lifeboat drill.

100,000 well-wishers and journalists, watched as the Titanic officially set sail from Southampton on 10 April 1912, at noon. George W.Bowyer was the pilot in charge as the Titanic left Southampton.

In what was later seen as a bad omen for the voyage, the Titanic narrowly missed colliding with the SS City of New York.

The larger ship displaced so much water that the New York’s mooring lines snapped as it rose and fell, swinging it round towards the Titanic. The swift action of a tugboat in towing the New York out of the way avoided tragedy.

This incident delayed the official maiden voyage’s departure by about an hour.

Titanic’s Second Journey – From Cherbourg to Queenstown

The Titanic left Cherbourg on Wednesday 10th April at 8:10pm. She arrived into Queenstown at 1:55pm on Thursday 11th April.

The Titanic sailed into Cherbourg, the world’s largest artificial harbor and dropped anchor near the Central Fort. Due to the fact that the water in the port was not deep enough the Titanic could not dock. Tenders transferred the 281 passengers (151 First Class, 28 Second Class, and 102 Third Class) to the luxury steamship, as well as 24 passengers who disembarked.

Among the passengers who embarked in France were some of the most famous and wealthy on the Titanic. These included:

  • Millionaire John Jacob Astor IV and his pregnant wife Madeleine Talmage Astor
  • Billionaire Margaret Brown.
  • Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff Gordon and his wife Lady Lucy Christiana Duff Gordon

Also brought aboard in France were luxury food items, including champagne, wine, cheese, and mineral water.

Today, the Cité de la Mare Museum in Cherbourg has a dedicated Titanic exhibition in memory of the famous ship, where you visit the Art Deco Luggage Hall.

By 8.10 pm, the Titanic was on her way, she sailed overnight to the south of Ireland and the harbor of Queenstown.

Titanic’s Third Journey – From Queenstown to New York

The Titanic left Queenstown on Thursday 11th April at 1:55pm.

The Titanic arrived in Queenstown (today known as Cobh) to pick up its last passengers before beginning the trans-Atlantic voyage. The ship dropped anchor at Roches Point.

Before the first world war Queenstown was Irelands most important mail and passenger port.

Two tenders were responsible for transporting the passengers from Cork Harbor, the PS Ireland, and the PS America.

Seven passengers disembarked, including Father Francis Browne, a Jesuit trainee, whose photographs are the last ever taken of the Titanic.

At 1.30 pm, to the sound of a whistle blast and bagpipes, the Titanic lifted her anchor and started her journey.

One final stop was necessary. At the Daunt Light-ship to drop off the pilot who had guided the ship in and out of Cork Harbor.

The Sinking of The Titanic

The ship made good time for the next two days but the Titanic was never able to complete her maiden voyage.

On the 14 April 1912, after four days at sea, the Titanic struck an iceberg that tore a hole in the ship’s hull below the waterline. The hull began filling with water, and within three hours, the vessel had sunk. Because of a lack of lifeboats and the proper emergency procedures, only 705 people survived the disaster.

110 Years Later, a Stunning New Photo May Finally Show the Iceberg That Sank the Titanic

Could this actually be the ship’s notorious nemesis? Here’s the evidence.

the iceberg that sank the white star line's olympic class rms titanic

More than a century after the sinking of the RMS Titanic , the identity of the iceberg that actually brought the mighty ship down is still unconfirmed. We’ve long scrutinized two photographs of separate icebergs that possibly sank the Titanic, but now, a newly discovered picture that’s up for auction shows a third frozen chunk—casting new doubt over the true culprit behind the legendary disaster.

The 5-inch by 3-inch black-and-white photograph— see it here —mounted on cardboard and mistakenly labeled “ Titantic ,” captures a potential suspect in the ship’s infamous sinking. Taken by John Snow Jr., a Nova Scotian undertaker, while en route to the North Atlantic wreckage site aboard the C.S. MacKay-Bennett on April 16, 1912—just two days after the Titanic ’s fateful encounter with an iceberg—this image adds another piece to the historical puzzle.

Snow, who was tasked with aiding in the recovery of victims, ultimately retrieved 306 bodies from the icy waters, including John Jacob Astor IV and Isidor Straus.

The C.S. MacKay-Bennett couldn’t handle all 306 bodies, so Snow’s firm embalmed 100 first-class passengers for return in coffins from Nova Scotia, and wrapped second-class passengers in canvas. Tragically, 116 third-class passengers and crew members were buried at sea.

“Nobody can say for sure” that the iceberg seen in the newly uncovered photo was the one that sank the Titanic , auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told The Daily Mail . But the Mackay-Bennett was one of the first ships to arrive at the wreckage site after the rescue ship Carpathia , which lends considerable weight to the possibility—especially since “the undertaker on board decided to take a photo of this iceberg,” Aldridge said.

the loss of ss titanic, 14 april 1912 the lifeboats all that was left of the greatest ship in the world the lifeboats that carried most of the 705 survivors operated by the white star line, ss titanic struck an iceberg in thick fog off newfoundland

The prevailing theory suggests the Titanic ’s nemesis was an iceberg marked with red paint , a telltale sign a ship had recently struck it. The emergence of a third iceberg photo adds to the intrigue. “He must have had his reasons for taking a photo of this iceberg,” Aldridge said. “He captioned it Titantic and mounted it for posterity.”

The photo, which is slated for auction on April 27 and is expected to fetch between $5,000 and $8,500, was in the Snow family until a collector acquired it in the early 1990s. That collector has brought it to auction.

Regardless of which iceberg was responsible for the Titanic ’s sinking, it still took decades for people—including those on board the ship—to fully understand what really happened on the night of April 14, 1912.

The trouble for the White Star Line-owned Titanic started that morning, according to Biography . The ship received a warning about ice in its path from the Caronia, and got another message about dangerous ice from the Baltic in the early afternoon. While Captain Edward Smith relayed the information to the chairman of the White Star Line, no one took action that day.

Later in the evening, after 7 p.m., the Titanic’ s crew overheard a third ice warning, this time from the Californian alerting another ship in its fleet. The crew disregarded a fourth advisory from the Mesaba , and the telegraph operators didn’t record a complete warning that the Californian directly transmitted to the Titanic .

As the warnings piled up unheeded, around 11:40 p.m., a crew member spotted an iceberg in the Titanic ’s path, but it was too late to move. The opportunity to decelerate or divert southward to evade the icebergs had already slipped away. The Titanic collided with the iceberg, sustaining damage to its forward section. The iceberg tore several holes in the ship’s side, and seawater rapidly began to pour in. Shortly after the collision, Captain Smith rushed to the bridge to evaluate the crisis and discovered that the ship was sinking.

The first distress call went out after midnight.

The Titanic didn’t have enough lifeboats to carry all its passengers to safety. Roughly 20 minutes past 2 a.m. on the morning of April 15, the Titanic plunged into the depths of the North Atlantic.

Biography writes that initially, surviving passengers reported watching from the water as the Titanic split apart before sinking. But for 73 years, those survivors’ claims were dismissed, and the conventional wisdom was that the Titanic sank in one piece.

“We rode away, and I didn’t close my eyes at all. I saw that ship sink, and I saw that ship break in half,” said Eva Hart, a 7-year-old Titanic survivor. “For 70 years, people have argued with me about that, but now at last it has been proven beyond all doubt that she did break in half. I know it did, I saw her.”

Biography continues:

It wasn’t until the Titanic ’s wreckage was discovered in 1985 that it was definitively proven that the ship had indeed split. Until that time, the survivors were told they misunderstood or incorrectly remembered what they had seen, largely thanks to testimony from employees of the White Star Line shipping company in the immediate months after the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912.

The true events of that tragic night have remained shrouded in doubt and speculation. And now, with the revelation of a third photograph potentially capturing the iceberg responsible for the sinking of the Titanic , we edge closer to piecing together the ship’s last moments.

Famous figures who had Titanic tickets but didn't make it on board

  • As the Titanic was the height of luxury in 1912, some celebrities had tickets for its maiden voyage.
  • But not all of them ended up boarding the ship.
  • J. Pierpont Morgan and Milton Hershey were among those who missed the disaster.

Insider Today

The sinking of the Titanic in April 1912 still captivates us today, with numerous books, a multibillion-dollar movie , museums , and, controversially, expensive tours of the wreckage available.

Interest in the ship led to another maritime tragedy last year when an OceanGate submersible went missing on the way to the wreckage and was eventually confirmed to have imploded , killing all five people on board.

In the aftermath, stories emerged about people invited to participate in one of OceanGate's trips but decided against it — much like, more than 100 years ago, how people were fascinated with those who had almost been on the Titanic.

Here are seven notable figures, some of whom were among the richest people in the world, who were supposed to sail on the Titanic's maiden voyage but didn't — and four well-known people who were booked to go on a future journey with the ship.

Milton Hershey, the founder of Hershey's, sent the White Star Line a $300 check to reserve a spot on the Titanic, but he ended up sailing home on the SS Amerika instead.

titanic cruise new

As they aged, Hershey and his wife, Catherine, spent their winters on the French Riviera. In December 1911, the couple left for another extended European vacation. For their return journey, Hershey wrote a $300 check from the Hershey Trust Company to the White Star Line to reserve places on the maiden voyage of the company's brand-new ship, the Titanic.

According to Lancaster History , pressing business matters forced Hershey to cut his vacation short, and he left Europe just days before the Titanic would set sail, instead heading home on a German liner called the Amerika, which would later warn the Titanic about the dangerous amount of ice.

Hershey's canceled check is still in the possession of the Hershey Community Archives , and you can view it online.

J. Pierpont Morgan — yes, J. P. Morgan himself — had a personal suite on the Titanic and had attended its launch party in 1911. But he extended his French vacation and missed the sinking.

titanic cruise new

"I've never been able to find an authoritative 1912 source explaining the exact reason why J. P. Morgan canceled his passage on the Titanic," the Titanic expert George Behe told Reuters in 2021. Some speculated that the reasons were that he was in bad health or having issues with customs because of his art collection.

However, we know that Morgan, the cofounder of General Electric, International Harvester, and US Steel, was also the founder of the International Mercantile Marine, which in turn owned White Star Line. According to The Washington Post , he was even on hand to witness its 1911 launch.

"Monetary losses amount to nothing in life," Morgan told a New York Times reporter after the sinking. "It is the loss of life that counts. It is that frightful death."

Guglielmo Marconi, the Nobel Prize winner who invented the radio, opted to head to the US three days earlier on the Lusitania, forgoing a free ticket on the Titanic.

titanic cruise new

You might know that Marconi was considered a hero after the sinking of the Titanic because his invention, the wireless radio, helped ships in the surrounding area find where to look for the lifeboats.

But did you know he was almost on board the ship himself?

His daughter Degna wrote in her 1926 book, "My Father, Marconi," that he was offered a free ticket aboard the Titanic. But because his stenographer got seasick, Marconi opted to sail to the US on the Lusitania because he trusted that ship's stenographer more than Titanic's, Degna wrote.

Henry Clay Frick, the chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company, missed the sailing of the Titanic because his wife sprained her ankle in Italy and needed to be hospitalized.

titanic cruise new

Visitors to New York City might recognize Frick's name from the Frick Collection or the Henry Clay Frick House. He was an important industrialist and a patron of the arts — and he was close to sailing on the doomed voyage.

"The Fricks booked the suite first, and then Mrs. Frick sprained her ankle while they were in Europe buying art and touring and things; so, they stayed behind to get medical attention," the historian Melanie Linn Gutowski told CBS News Pittsburgh in 2012.

"The suite that they booked, that some historians think that they booked, was some kind of savior suite in a way," she continued. "Everybody who booked it managed to survive either by not being on the ship, or jumping into a lifeboat at the last minute."

Eventually, the tickets made their way to J. Bruce Ismay, the chairman and managing director of the White Star Line. Controversially, he was one of the few men who made their way onto a lifeboat and survived. He was criticized for this for the rest of his life.

Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt canceled his ticket on the Titanic at the last minute. He was on board the Lusitania when a German U-boat sank it in May 1915.

titanic cruise new

As a member of the prominent Vanderbilt family, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt was a well-known member of New York society, so there was media coverage when it was revealed he'd narrowly escaped the Titanic.

Unfortunately, just a few years later, he was aboard the Lusitania , a British ocean liner that was sunk by German U-boats in 1915. He was one of the 1,200 passengers who did not survive the attack.

The American journalist Theodore Dreiser was persuaded by his publisher to take a cheaper ship home across the Atlantic.

titanic cruise new

Dreiser wrote about his brush with disaster in a chapter of his 1913 memoir, "A Traveler at Forty." Slate said the section about the Titanic, "The Voyage Home," was "one of the most gripping chapters in the memoir."

Dreiser wrote that he wanted to sail home with the rich and powerful people aboard the Titanic to get a peek at how the other half lived, but added that his publisher convinced him to sail home on the Kroonland, a cheaper ship, two days before Titanic sank.

"The terror of the sea had come swiftly and directly home to all," Dreiser wrote, according to Slate. "To think of a ship as immense as the Titanic, new and bright, sinking in endless fathoms of water. And the two thousand passengers routed like rats from their berths only to float helplessly in miles of water, praying and crying!"

John Mott, another Nobel Prize winner, was also offered a free ticket on the ship, but he chose a smaller ship, the Lapland, instead.

titanic cruise new

Mott, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was the longtime leader of the YMCA, was another near-miss. Gorden R. Doss , a professor at Andrews University, said that Mott came close to death a few times.

First, he skipped the Titanic and opted for the Lapland. Three decades later, in 1943, he narrowly avoided a train crash.

Mott said, "The Good Lord must have more work for us to do" upon hearing about the sinking, according to Sotheby's .

There were other celebrities who had tickets to sail the Titanic in the future, had it not sank. J.C. Penney was set to sail on the ship's next trip from England to New York.

titanic cruise new

According to the Smithsonian Magazine , the founder of JCPenney was set to sail on the Titanic's second  voyage from England to the US.

Frank Seiberling, the cofounder of Goodyear Tires, was booked to return to Southampton on the Titanic's next voyage.

titanic cruise new

The Akron Beacon Journal reported that Seiberling, the cofounder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his wife frequently traveled to England and were huge admirers of English architecture. But one of their trips was postponed when their ship out of the States, the Titanic, sank.

So was John Alden Dix, the governor of New York.

titanic cruise new

Smithsonian Magazine also reported that Dix, the governor of New York from 1911 to 1913, was on the passenger list of the Titanic's return trip to England.

Henry Adams, a historian who was a descendant of President John Adams and President John Quincy Adams, was also booked on this trip.

titanic cruise new

"My ship, the Titanic, is on her way," Adams wrote in a letter on April 12, 1912, "and unless she drops me somewhere else, I should get to Cherbourg in a fortnight." As history tells, Adams was never able to board the ship and was forced to book passage elsewhere, The New Republic's Timothy Noah wrote.

Incredible rusting hulk of China’s abandoned 50,000 ton & 800ft replica Titanic that cost £130m before being left to rot

  • Georgie English , Foreign News Reporter

AN INCREDIBLE full-scale replica of the doomed Titanic has been left abandoned and rusting in a Chinese theme park for years.

The mammoth model ship cost a whopping £130million to create and is almost identical to the famous cruise liner - even being an almighty 800ft long and weighing in at 50,000 tons.

A full-scale replica of the doomed Titanic has been left abandoned and rusting in a Chinese theme park for years

The ambitious plan to build a theme park and museum dedicated to one of the most well-known global tragedies was created by Chinese investor Su Shaojun.

He got the idea after seeing how well James Cameron 's 1997 classic Titanic film did over in China.

The boat has been almost identically modelled off the original White Star ship that set sail in 1912 but unlike the Titanic it never had any passengers step on board.

It has been sat in a theme park in the Sichuan Province since 2016 and has only collected dust, rust and dirt since its bizarre conception.

Anchored in the Romandisea Seven Star International Culture Tourism Resort the ship has luxury banquet halls, theatres, observation platforms and even swimming pools on board.

The design team wanted to "get it as close as we can" to the original cruise that made headlines when it set sail for New York as the world's largest ship at the time.

Guests were set to enjoy a five star evening on the boat despite it only functioning through a steam engine to simulate a journey at sea.

It could even accommodate 2,400 passengers and 900 staff as well as having an interactive museum inside.

But the project faced major scrutiny globally for the idea to give guests a "hitting the iceberg experience".

The replica ship would feel like a sinking vessel out at sea at the end of the stay - something the families of those affected in the 1912 disaster strongly condemned.

Pictures today show the unfinished hulk covered in a copper muse after years of rusting away on land.

The upper deck is empty outside of missing chunks of the cruise and construction equipment left deserted after the plan crumbled to pieces.

To make the process even more undesirable, it took seven long years to get it in the miserable state it is in right now.

The real Titanic - which sunk exactly 112 years ago on Sunday - took just over a year to fully complete.

The ship was set to be the first time a full sized model of the Titanic was ever built as even during the filming for the blockbuster movie the team only had a 90 per cent to scale replica.

The cruise liner now sits untouched in the Sichuan Province, China

CEO of the failed Titanic Su Shaojin said: "For China, the Titanic represents something of universal value.

"Romandisea will become a world-class tourist destination with a noble soul and spiritual pursuit."

To achieve his dream, Seven Star Energy Investment and Wuchang Shipbuilding splashed out £110million on the clone.

More money has been pumped into the project since then to try and get the idea afloat but there has been very little success.

Tickets to stay on the ship would've set guests back £400 for a cabin room or nearly £14,000 for luxury accommodation, said reports at the time.

IMPENDING FAILURE

The Romandisea Titanic was severely delayed by errors in construction and financial woes in 2017 leaving it half-finished.

But this wasn't the only trouble the ship ran in to as locals and onlookers blasted the concept of a replica ship based on a fatal disaster.

Many locals labelled it as a "waste of money" after they had already witnessed several replica ideas fall short of the expectation such as the poor imitation of the USS Enterprise.

But the Romandisea Titanic team's hopes finally sank after severe backlash from furious families of those affected by the 1912 tragedy.

The Titanic tragedy

titanic cruise new

The Titanic was a piece of history when it first set off from Southampton on April 14, 1912.

It was the largest cruise ship ever at the time and carried around 2,224 people on board.

But the doomed ship sank just five days into the journey after hitting an iceberg on its voyage to New York taking the lives of over 1,500 people.

The iceberg was around 100 feet tall and came from a glacier in Greenland.

Musicians famously played for two hours and five minutes as the ship sank.

Only 16 wooden lifeboats and four collapsible boats were carried on board the giant cruise - enough to accommodate 1,178 people.

This meant that only one-third of the ship's total capacity could possibly be saved but in the end only 700 managed to safely escape.

Ever since, the Titanic has been sitting 12,500ft below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean and is reportedly deteriorating at a worrying pace.

Some believe the wreckage could disappear completely by 2030, all because of "hungry" bacteria in the ocean.

The story of the ship has gone on to play a pivotal role in culture across the world.

A film about the tragic tale has grossed almost £2billion worldwide and starred actors like Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

As several mimic ships have been made such as the Romandisea Titanic.

On June 18, 2023, 11 decades after the sinking of the Titanic, a research submersible visiting the wreckage went missing.

The  US  Coast Guard sent out a search for survivors after the vessel vanished  with five people on board but all ended up dead when they ran out of oxygen.

Jean Legg, whose dad was a steward on the boat and one of 705 survivors, said: "My dad lived to be nearly 90 and the sights and sounds of people fighting for their lives stayed with him to the end of his days.

"If he knew this was being replicated, I think he'd be turning in his grave.

"I find it very upsetting, I feel they could have replicated another liner - it's in poor taste."

THE UNSINKABLE SHIP - FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE TITANIC

The Titanic was the world's largest passenger ship when it entered service - measuring 269 metres - and was the largest man-made moving object on Earth.

It burned around 600 tonnes of coal a day and almost 100 tonnes of ash were ejected into the sea every 24 hours.

There were 20,000 bottles of beer on board, 1,500 bottles of wine and 8,000 cigars – all for the use of first-class passengers.

Up to 246 injuries and two deaths were recorded during the ship’s 26-month construction in Belfast.

The last supper served to first-class passengers consisted of 11 courses.

First-class passengers were given a book containing 352 songs, with musicians on board required to know all of them in case requests were made.

James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic about the disaster has grossed more than £1.5bn, won 11 Oscars and is one of the highest grossing film of all time.
