The Story So Far are an American pop punk band from Walnut Creek, California, who formed in 2007. They’re currently signed to Pure Noise.

The band’s website loudly proclaims that their work ethic and attitude basically corresponds directly to one of their lyrics - “you don’t deserve what you haven’t earned” - but the band themselves had hardly been slogging it out for years before their own breakthrough came along - the group were not long out of school when they put together the original lineup of Parker Chest Hole Cannon on lead vocals, Kelen Capener on bass, Ryan Torf behind the drums and Kevin Geyer and Kevin Ambrose playing guitar. That same lineup still exists today, although with William Levy having replaced Ambrose on six-string duties.

The band have released two albums to date, and their first, ‘Under Soil and Dirt’, saw them move a step closer to the holy grail for pop punk bands, the Warped Tour, by playing both its UK leg and its warm-up, Road to Warped, in their native U.S. in 2012. They built up enough of a fanbase through events like that - as well as through high-profile support slots to the likes of New Found Glory - to secure them a slot on the tour proper in 2013, around the time they were promoting album number two, ‘What You Don’t See’. They returned to the tour in 2014, alongside the likes of Bowling for Soup and The Devil Wears Prada, and are lined up to be a key fixture on the Pop Punk’s Not Dead Tour of Europe in winter 2014, too.

Live reviews

California has produced some of the best punk bands of all time and The Story So Far is looking to keep that amazing reputation.

Coming out of Walnut Creek, California the band has been on a rocket ship of exposure as they began in the very sought after Warped Tour playing along with the greats such as Less Than Jake and New Found Glory. But I was able to catch them in Portland, Oregon where they brought punk to the home of grunge.

Hawthorne Theatre is not a large arena by any means but you couldn't tell that by the volume of the audience. Hundreds of fans singing along as the band pounded their way through hard-hitting songs. What amazed me is how much the band vibed with the audience. This was not a stiff show with people swaying to the songs they liked. It felt more like being at someone's house with your friends on stage, rocking out. To add to that feeling, the small stage was swarmed with audience members jumping up, running around and then diving into their fellow fans - all while front man Parker Cannon continued to spit lyrics and expertly dodge the oncoming rush of super fans.

By far one of the more intense shows I've been to and who doesn't like a guy jumping off the stage and falling right next to you?

Report as inappropriate

American pop punk outfit The Story So Far have really appealed to the British audience with a sound reminiscent of Fall Out Boy and contemporaries All Time Low. The relatable lyrics and infectious hooks turned the tracks of their first two albums into underground cult hits and it is impressive just how much of the material is known and sang back in force this evening.

The band seems to have quite a jam session style when performing live, at times you feel as though they have forgotten the baying crowd is present at all as the members huddle towards the back of the stage before lead singer Parker Cannon turns and almost launches himself at the front row while expecting them to sing back the chorus of 'Things I Can't Change'. The quintet really does know the material well and despite having only broken from beneath the radar in 2007 there is the impression that they have been practising some of these tracks such as 'Daughters' and 'Roam' for years and years previous. With a strong support base, I would not be surprised to see this band appearing more regularly on UK radio and charts.

One word review - mental - Me and a few hundred people crammed into the New Cross Inn, jumping sweating and singing along to their songs, loads of crowd surfing, plenty of sweaty bodies, in quite frankly a venue not able to contain them.

I hadn’t really heard of these guys before the gig and wasn’t really converted to be honest, I find their music all a bit samey and there are better bands out there IMO. But if you like their music, they do put on a great show and the fans in the place were pretty hardcore, so if you’re into them, you’ll have a great time.

Pop punk badassery, as always. Ended so beautifully with clairvoyant- definitely a highlight. Crowd was lit, the set was great (good mix of old and new songs), sick venue, what more could you ask for? The story so far is one of the best pop punk bands out there in 2018.

Great great show, these dudes play hard and love their fans. I just wish you could heart the singer over the crowd though it was very annoying wanting to hear the singer sing but couldn't because his voice volume was so low compared to the people and instruments

Surprisingly the Friendliest, least weedy show for this type of concert. Wasn't disappointed by one band. Great show! And I am rather fond of the varsity theater. Had a great night.

Great show, awesome atmosphere. Tssf killed it. They played some classics and some off their new album. I couldn't be happier with their performance. I can't wait to see them again.

This was a great show. These guys know how to put on an amazing performance for their fans. I highly recommend seeing them live if you are remotely interested in their music.

It was a great show. I actually went to see Turnover and Basement more so than the story so far but the venue is perfect and the bands were amazing.

The Story So Far

the story so far 2015 tour

The Story So Far have returned with their new album I Want To Disappear. Comprised of ten songs, it contains everything that’s brought them international acclaim and success since their inception. The current lineup features Parker Cannon (vocals), Kevin Geyer (lead guitar, keys), Ryan Torf (drums, rhythm guitar, and keys) and Will Levy (guitars).

When speaking about the record, it’s hard for the band to pinpoint what inspired them in writing its songs, but for the four of them, there was a lot going on both personally and professionally in their lives. “We kind of grew out of our 20s between this record and last” says Torf. “Like a lot of people, you go through so many different things in life and you’re faced with new challenges. As a band, when you go through hardships you realize that some things are more important than music. These can and do take priority over playing, and that can feel divisive. It’s sometimes necessary though, to get to where you want to go.”

“We were waiting for all the stars to align for our individual situations,” adds Geyer, “so that this record could be the priority, and that we had the time and space to make it happen in the way that we wanted to. We went through a lot as people, and as a band, to discover what was working about it, and we leaned into that.”

“If we were rushing it,” says Levy, “or trying to fit in a particular mold, then it would sound as such. But we pushed ourselves. There’s a bar that we have in our minds of what our band should sound like.”

Recorded and mixed by Jon Markson at The Animal Farm studio in Flemington, NJ, I Want To Disappear opens with the frenetic one-two punch of “All This Time” and “Watch You Go”, while songs like “Jump The Gun”, “Big Blind” and “Nothing To Say” contain the trademark urgency of classic The Story So Far songs. The record closes with “White Shores” and “I Want To Disappear”, displaying their growth both as a band and as people.

“We’re always just trying to make something that we love and that feels like it’s relevant to where we are in life,” says Torf. “We’ve already done so much in the past, but we wanted this to feel like the present thing that we are. We tried to make something that we connected with, and that hopefully our fans will like as well. But first and foremost, it’s just something that we’re proud of and feel good about.”

The Least Anticipated Album Tour begins in June

A Day To Remember

A Day to Remember are back in a big way. The band is hitting the road this summer on a headlining tour beginning on June 6 in Write Park, Minnesota running through July 28 in Nashville, Tennessee. Very special guests for the trek will be The Story So Far and Four Year Strong, along with support from Militarie Gun, Pain of Truth, and Scowl on select dates.

Check out the full tour itinerary below.

The trek is dubbed The Least Anticipated Album tour, which leads fans to believe that the group will be confirming a new studio album imminently.

Later this fall, A Day to Remember are set to perform at When We Were Young 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The band will be playing their watershed 2009 album Homesick all the way through. Other featured acts at this year’s installment include Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Pierce the Veil, Jimmy Eat World, Chiodos, Anberlin, Sleeping with Sirens and more. In addition to ADTR doing Homesick , over 50 acts will be performing one of their classic albums in full. My Chemical Romance will be playing  The Black Parade , August Burns Red are performing  Constellations , plus many more.

Additionally, A Day to Remember are slated to appear at Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida in May alongside Mötley Crüe, Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Judas Priest, Falling In Reverse, Greta Van Fleet, Breaking Benjamin, Anthrax, In This Moment, Primus, Architects, and more, as well as the Hang Out Music Festival in Alabama and Sonic Temple in Ohio. On June 22, the band will headline the first day of the 10th annual Four Chord Music Festival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Story So Far and Four Year Strong are also on the bill that day.

A Day to Remember released their last album, You’re Welcome, back in 2021. The record performed well commercially, peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and also cracking the Top 5 on Billboard’s Top Rock, Top Hard Rock, and Top Alternative albums charts. In 2022, the band released a brand new single, “Miracle . “

Towards the end of A Day to Remember’s Re-Entry Tour with Asking Alexandria and Point North in late 2021, bassist  Josh Woodard left the band . In 2020, Woodard denied allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct. At the time, he “decided to pause legal proceedings against the accuser once the post was removed,” but after these allegations recently resurfaced, he said he “must act accordingly” and “will be leaving tour to be with my family and continue to defend my innocence in these matters.”

The Story So Far released their fourth album Proper Dose way back in 2018 through Pure Noise Records. The album hit No. 19 on the Billboard 200. Recently, the band has been in the studio working on the long awaited follow-up, I Want to Disappear . Four Year Strong released their last album, Brain Pain , in 2020.

The Story So Far on burnout, rebirth, and their new Britpop-punk sound

We met the California rockers on their UK tour, to talk the stunning reinvention at the heart of ‘Proper Dose’

the story so far 2015 tour

Juvenile, simplistic and something to grow out of – few genres have an image quite as sullied as pop-punk’s. The softened, Americanised take on punk-rock is plagued by a less-than-savoury reputation – something The Story So Far know better than most.

The one-time poster boys for the pop-punk scene’s turn-of-the-decade resurgence, the five-piece’s fired-up take on the genre captured the hearts of thousands, and drew them the scorn of thousands more. Seen as both essential and egregious, depending on who you’d ask, their love-it-or-hate-it approach reaped dividends amongst a scene of kids that thrived on their outcast image.

‘Proper Dose’, The Story So Far’s latest album’, is a heel-turn. Taking that punk-rock background and fusing it with sonics more akin to a Britpop band (Oasis get several nods, both sonically and in frontman Parker Cannon’s present day on-stage persona), it’s the most accomplished record the Californian group have ever put to tape; evidence that pop-punk can grow up, just like any other genre.

In the midst of a huge UK tour,  NME  sat down with Parker, guitarist Kevin Geyer and drummer Ryan Torf, to talk through how drug abuse and disinterest in their scene led to the reinvention of ‘Proper Dose’.

So, let’s start with the new record. From what I gather, it almost didn’t happen? It sounds like you were pretty burnt out?

Parker: “Yeah, we had just been on a really intense touring schedule, from like 2012 through to 2016. We were just pretty burnt out on playing the same songs all the time. We weren’t too creative – we didn’t really have time for it. We weren’t jamming as much, or writing as much. It came back around – when we had to do another record, we were like, ‘How’s it gonna work? How’s it gonna sound? What do we even like?’”

Ryan: “We just hit this point where everybody had life things going on; we all hit our mid-twenties. It’s this age where we’d been touring since 2012, and you’d come home and the things around you are changing and growing, and you’re just popping back-and-forth. It leads to these weird things, and everyone has to deal with them differently – it makes it hard to do music, at times.”

The first three records were so quick – there was a constant momentum.

Recommended.

Parker: “Yeah, there was definitely the energy there for it, for me – especially lyrically. Just being in that place in my life of being young and… rash. I had the momentum for it, you could say, and I just got to a point where that wasn’t my life anymore. I didn’t feel that way about certain things, and nothing resonated as hard as it did when we first started out. “

Those lyrics were both integral to The Story So Far’s success, and almost part of their downfall. Acidic lash-outs at ex-girlfriends and former lovers, they caught the attentions and captured the moods of a thousand young, worked-up teenagers, both male and female. It didn’t take long, though, for those lyrics to be held up as problematic, and pinned with the same allegations of sexism and slut shaming that plagued much of the mid-00s emo scene. When a widely-publicised incident involving Parker kicking a selfie-taking fan off stage occurred ( only for the girl herself to reject the severity of the allegations ), it was played up as indicative of the frontman’s negative view towards women in general.

It’s little surprise, then, that he feels disconnected from the younger man who wrote those lyrics. “I don’t want to look back on my other stuff and frown,” Parker says today. “I just want to look ahead and be able to smile. These songs can last forever and be… good,” he trails off.

the story so far 2015 tour

When did that view towards your old music change?

Parker: “We were able to come around on music, in a way. We started listening more instead of just worrying about stupid bullshit like touring, or what have you.“

For a while, there was this huge swell of interest in pop-punk again. You were so contained within that scene.

Parker: “Yeah, it was a resurgence, I would say. “

Kevin: “That’s something we tried to shed throughout out career, too – we don’t identify as ‘pop punk’. We are who we are.”

Parker: “We are what we listen to, when we’re touring or whatever. Growing up, especially listening to a band like Title Fight and seeing them evolve – I’ve gotta give them a lot of credit for how we went about things.“

How did you end up in that world? You came from a more hardcore background.

Kevin: “When we started, we were super young. Our first jam ever, Ryan was playing on fuckin’ buckets in my parents’ garage. Our original guitarist, Kevin Ambrose, his brother drummed in Set Your Goals. They were popping off at the time.

Ryan: “And that was that pop-punk, but heavily influenced by hardcore.

Parker: That was the first time we’d heard that, or thought that was possible, or people would fuck with that at all. Being around them was a huge introduction into shows like that; rowdier shows.”

Kevin: “It was an eye-opening experience. Mikey [Ambrose], the drummer of Set Your Goals, would put a bunch of shit on my iPod, and I’d never know what it is. It’d be some random hardcore band, or something.”

Parker: “It definitely exploded from there, in terms of finding bands, or being addicted to going to shows. It’s undeniable – there fever was there. And from that, rose this band. It just really snowballed, man, honestly. We had no illusions of grandeur, at first – we were just jamming and having hella fun. That’s how we got into that whole scene.”

When did you realise that wasn’t the space you wanted to occupy anymore?

Parker: “Once I’d been touring a lot, and partied a lot, and fucking went through it with multiple different relationships… None of them worked out [laughs], so I was like, ‘Well, this probably isn’t the formula for what’s gonna happen or be good.’ Also, it was getting harder to go from playing these crazy shows on tour every night and having so much fun, and then going back home, chilling out and being away from it – it was going from a real high to a real low right away. So I was trying to find some sort of balance in between, and it didn’t work out. It led to me doing some… other stuff, which was not conducive to being in a band.”

As a means of dealing with that relentless up-down lifestyle, Parker turned to tranquilisers. Sinking into a world of Xanax and benzo abuse, he numbed the world around him; a medicated means of slowing down that hectic pace. It was a lifestyle that only exacerbated his situation – sending Parker further away from reality led to an even greater disconnect. The man once renowned for his seeming disinterest and reclusive personality became more distant still.

When the time came for a follow-up, he was trying to kick the habit. Numbed, he struggled to connect to his emotions – for a band known for their heavily emotive lyrical content, this was a problem. “It wasn’t good for writing, or jamming,” Parker recalls, “but then I realised, ‘Well, maybe I can write about this.’”

Already struggling with what he wanted to write about, that drug abuse became a central theme of ‘Proper Dose’ as it took place. “Barely focused anymore / The haze is all that I can see,” he sings on the explosive opener; “My appropriate opiate has me out of it / I can’t believe you’re still upset, get over it,” goes ‘Out Of It’, a to-the-point back-and-forth between his sober and medicated selves. It’s a lyrical sensibility that’s finally seen Parker move his anger away from ex-girlfriends and towards the medication that ensnared him.

Was writing about it an important part of you getting past that drug use?

Parker: “For sure. This is always therapy – it’s always been some sort of therapy for any of us, from whatever it is that you’re going through. Anything at all.”

Musically, the sound has expanded a lot, too. Where did you start?

Ryan: We went in with the expectation that we were gonna try whatever, and not worry if it was going to work out. We had so much time to mess around and grow. Pure Noise [Records] were so good and supportive with that – and it made all the difference for this record. We didn’t feel constricted by what we could try. We ended up with songs that were your core identity from the past, and also things that we’d never tried before.”

Kevin: “With our first three records, it felt hard to grow in an honest way, on a deadline. It forces you to just do what needs to be done. But with this one, we didn’t really have a set deadline. We just wanted to keep working on it. Having those few years to explore… there’s a lot of fuckin’ music in the world! We were all pretty stagnant on ‘the scene’ – none of us were listening to this type of band. For me, it was more like going back to what I listened to early on – Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and stuff. A lot of classic music – since our self-titled record in 2015, to now, that’s kinda been the…”

Parker: “The vibe.”

the story so far 2015 tour

Most notably, Parker found himself stumbling across Oasis, a band that had largely passed him by. The influence the Gallagher brothers had on ‘Proper Dose’ is palpable. From the newly expansive guitar tones – which make The Story So Far of 2018 sound like a Britpop band raised under Cali sun, rather than drab Manchester skies – to Parker’s more refined vocal, which finds him morphing his bark into a more melodic, Gallagher-esque croon. It’s a record that expands the sonic horizons not just of The Story So Far, but the pop-punk scene at large. It’s proof that there’s life outside of those more youthful, yelping creations.

Is it your hope – to get out of ‘the scene’?

Parker: “I don’t wanna throw shade on the scene in general. That’s what made us who we are, and it was so much fun. We just know that the people who are listening to this band, or have been – they’re growing up too. It’s only right to do as such, and make something that can be timeless, rather than a moment in time.”

It sounds like you’ve got a more positive look on things, at the moment.

Parker: “It feels good to be playing again, and playing live especially. These songs, especially live, just sound so good.”

Kevin: “Just being on tour, too – this time around in Europe, it’s the first time we’ve been here that I’ve really appreciated everything. We were walking everywhere, and taking it in. I feel like we were all a little more excited to be there, than we were in the past. We just feel a little more grown up and appreciative of the whole situation we’re in.”

Parker: “We’ve just got some more scope, dude.”

The Story So Far’s new album ‘Proper Dose’ is out now via Pure Noise Records.

Fact or Fiction: This Masters Will Be Won By a Texan, Verne Lundquist’s Best Call

SI Golf’s writers and editors debate whether a two-horse race is emerging, the schism against Greg Norman at Augusta National and more.

  • Author: SI Golf Staff

In this story:

Welcome to the first Masters edition of SI Golf’s Fact or Fiction, where we’ll never stop being amazed at the power of Augusta National’s SubAir system.

We’ll be here after every day’s play with a series of statements for writers and editors to declare as “Fact” or “Fiction” along with a brief explanation. Responses may also (occasionally) be “Neutral” since there's a lot of gray area in golf.

Do you agree or disagree? Let us know on the SI Golf X account.

Bryson DeChambeau, the first-round leader , said in 2020 that Augusta National was a par-67 course for him given his length. He has somewhat walked it back since, but it remains accurate.

John Pluym: FICTION. There’s no doubt DeChambeau is one of the biggest hitters in professional golf. And he proved it in Round 1 of the Masters, averaging 317 yards off the tee. Still, DeChambeau has learned that you can’t always overpower Augusta National . It still comes down to ballstriking, imagination around the greens and a hot putter. He had it going in all three categories Thursday. We’ll find out if he can do it for three more rounds.

John Schwarb: FACT. Let’s face it, most courses are a par-68 or lower for the pros. Doesn’t mean they always shoot it, but still. Going for par-5s in two require a “momentous decision” far less often than Bobby Jones would like. Bryson simply said the quiet part out loud.

Bob Harig: FICTION. It can be a par-67 for the longest hitters on some days, and perhaps Thursday was one of them for DeChambeau . But his comment was made in the context of how far he was hitting the ball and how potentially soft Augusta National would play during the fall 2020 Masters. He learned that there’s far more to hitting long around here, and even if you are accurate off the tee—which he wasn’t—you still need to put the ball in the right spots on the greens. The course yielded some numbers during the first round but only two ended up breaking that magic score Bryson spouted in 2020.

Jeff Ritter: FACT: Bryson hit it in the pines on both back-9 par 5s Thursday and still birdied both of them. If he’s going to hang here through the weekend, he’ll need to continue to shred them.

LIV golfer Bryson DeChambeau

DeChambeau played his best Masters round, shooting 7-under 65 in the opening round.

Katie Goodale, Katie Goodale / USA TODAY

Scottie Scheffler shot a bogey-free 66 and sits one back of DeChambeau with Round 1 yet to finish. This year’s green jacket is going home to Dallas with one of them.

Pluym: FACT. Well, I guess I’m changing my prediction from Brooks Koepka to Scheffler or DeChambeau. I should have just gone with Scheffler, who shot 32 on the back nine Thursday to close on DeChambeau. The best player in the world played like it in the opening round, and I should have known better.

Schwarb: FACT. It’s easy to get hot take-ish after 18 holes in a major, but Scheffler was bogey-free with six birdies while playing in not-insignificant winds. I’m not sure I’d take the field against him right now, so getting DeChambeau is a bonus.

Harig: FICTION. Scheffler seems inevitable but it’s too early to make such a bold prediction. Yes, he and Bryson have a small advantage over the rest but they’ll have some tough golf to play Friday. Let’s see if they keep it going and if anyone else can take advantage.

Ritter: FACT: I mean, if I had to guess at this moment, Scheffler just finished a smooth, bogey-free round and his Las Vegas odds have plummeted. At the start of the week he was the man to beat. Now he’s The Man to Beat.

Former PGA Tour golfer Greg Norman

Norman paid for his ticket to attend Wednesday's practice.

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Greg Norman paid for his ticket to attend Wednesday’s practice round, according to his son Greg Jr. This shows that the pettiness of golf’s schism lingers, regardless of the status of any PGA Tour/LIV Golf negotiations .

Schwarb: FACT. The Masters doesn’t owe anyone anything, but it’s a minor annoyance for this story to occupy two minutes of the media’s attention. Only the Norman family can create silly drama around a ticket to a golf tournament.

Pluym: FICTION. If you have a six-stroke lead going into the final round of the Masters and you lose, you should have to pay for your ticket. In all seriousness, Norman has been about dividing and conquering the PGA Tour, so I think Mr. LIV can afford a Masters badge. Harig: FACT. Norman has every right to attend the Masters if he’s able to obtain a ticket or a badge and the idea that he is here and some kind of distraction is silly. So he watched a few of his LIV guys . And then followed Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler for a time Thursday. So what? He probably would have been best to not do any interviews, but that is not Norman’s style in this setting.

Ritter: FACT. I’m not sure Norman is really a distraction, but the fact that Augusta declined to simply credential him turned it into a headline. Didn’t Jack, Gary and Tom just sit at a dias and appeal to the PGA Tour and LIV to find a way to come together? How’s that going?

Sportscaster Verne Lundquist

Lundquist has some of the memorable calls in Masters history.

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN released a tribute video honoring broadcaster Verne Lundquist’s retirement, which won’t be the last one we’ll see this week. The legend’s best call was “Yes, sir!” when Jack Nicklaus birdied the 17th on Sunday in 1986.

Schwarb: FICTION. Not taking anything away from Verne but his “Yes, sir!” was the second of that historic Sunday—largely lost to history is the fact that Ben Wright said it when Nicklaus eagled 15. The very best call was Tiger’s chip-in at 16 in 2005, which is arguably the best marriage of commentary and video in sports history.

Pluym: FACT. I think it’s the best call in the history of golf. I remember that day in 1986 like it was yesterday, and I still get emotional thinking about it to this day. Jack Nicklaus. Verne Lundquist. It doesn’t get any better.

Harig: FICTION. That is a terrific call, and memorable, but Ben Wright said the same thing earlier in the round when Nicklaus eagled the 15th. No problem. But Verne’s call of Tiger’s chip at 16 in 2005 is better. And the camera work and to stay with the ball and his emotional reaction, of course, make it so.

Ritter: FICTION. I also give the edge to Verne in 2005, which was a special call all his own. Lundquist is a legend, and his voice will be missed.

Zendaya’s Challengers Press Tour: See Every Look So Far

The year's undisputed red-carpet queen, Zendaya , continues to serve look after look on the press tour for her new tennis drama, Challengers , and each outfit has perfectly combined preppy athleticism with classic femininity. It's called commitment to the theme!

The Vogue cover girl 's outfits have been beyond literal during this press tour, with tennis balls on her shoes and other fun details (think: a feathery tail) making the most of every promotional opportunity.

Here's everything she's worn so far:

How! Freaking! Cute! This vintage Vivienne Westwood look is exactly what I want to be wearing all summer long.

What's that? The feathery tail isn't “practical”? Who cares! I'd never sit down while wearing a look like this; I'd simply be too busy posing on a roof somewhere in London like our girl Z.

The star wore her currently honey-blonde hair in a high ponytail that was then braided, bringing to mind the equally fierce and formidable Katniss Everdeen. But while a middle school horse girl would have tied a ribbon at the tip of the braid, Zendaya's white ribbon bow is artfully tied around the base, framing the star's face and giving her a low-key kind of white tiara.

Entertainment | google to stop showing links to california news reports, entertainment, entertainment | so far, jennifer lopez is one of 2024’s big ‘losers’ and maybe ‘everyone hates’ her, fans may be fascinated with j-lo’s ‘persona’ and rekindled romance with ben affleck, but they haven’t rushed to buy her new album or scoop up tickets to her north american concert tour.

the story so far 2015 tour

By many measures, Jennifer Lopez should be in a great place in the first half of of 2024.

After all, the 54-year-old singer/actor/dancer/influencer/entrepreneur isn’t just one of the most famous women in the world, she’s back together with the love of her life, Ben Affleck, rekindling her romance with the actor in 2021 after they dramatically called off their engagement 20 years earlier.

But, career-wise, 2024 has proven to be a challenge for Lopez. In the past few weeks alone, she has faced such headlines as “Why does everyone suddenly hate Jennifer Lopez?” And, on “The Town” podcast this week, entertainment industry experts Matthew Belloni and Lucas Shaw both agreed that she was one of the “losers” so far of the year.

The reason for the “loser” designation? People are not rushing to buy Lopez’s first album in 10 years, “This Is Me … Now” or to buy seats for her North American concert tour this summer, they said.

TOPSHOT - US actress/singer Jennifer Lopez and US actor Ben Affleck arrive for the premiere of "The Mother" at the Westwood Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles, California, on May 10, 2023. (Photo by Michael Tran / AFP) (Photo by MICHAEL TRAN/AFP via Getty Images)

The album peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in February, then disappeared, Forbes reported . Meanwhile, Lopez may have 253 million followers on Instagram, but Belloni, Shaw and others say that doesn’t translate into people clamoring to scoop up tickets to her tour. The tour launches June 26 in Orlando, Florida, and Lopez performs at Chase Center in San Francisco on July 16.

But so far, the concert is facing “weak” ticket sales, which forced Lopez to cancel seven dates last week and to rebrand the tour to apparently broaden its scope, changing it from “This Is Me… Now” to “This Is Me… Live | The Greatest Hits,” Variety reported.

“This is super embarrassing,” Belloni, Puck’s co-founder and The Hollywood Reporter’s former editor, said on “The Town.” Belloni talked about the big “roll-out” Lopez had undertaken to get the public excited about the album and the tour. In addition to a social media blitz, she also released two films, with Lopez sharing that she self-financed her three-part media extravaganza — the album and two movies — for $20 million.

The first film, “This is Me … Now: A Love Story,” is a romantic musical tour of her album. The second has the rather self-important title, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” and is a behind-the-scenes documentary about the creation of the album, with a focus on Lopez and Affleck finding their way back to each other. Lopez is depicted as getting “candid” about her personal growth, her struggle to find a suitable romantic partner and her much publicized habit of cycling through relationships, engagements and marriages. At one point, she acknwoledges that people are probably wondering, “What is this girl’s (expletive) problem?”

But even with Lopez’s big media roll-out, interest in her album and concert are definitely nowhere near Taylor Swift levels, even if some critics would say that Lopez has those expectations. Unfortunately, after rebranding her tour to make it appear to be more of a “greatest hits” event, “it’s still not selling,” Belloni said.

“I asked a big music industry person, like, what the hell is going on with J-Lo,” Belloni continued. “The response was she way overshot. Great person, great work ethic, nice team but they over-reached.”

It’s also debatable whether she has any hit songs, Belloni said, adding, “She was never as big as she was in her own mind. This is a sad situation.”

Shaw, who covers entertainment business news for Bloomberg News, asked, “When is the last time J-Lo had a song that anyone cared about. From a music perspective, I feel like she peaked 20 years.” He compared her to an artist like Shakira, who consistently puts out new music. He said that the public is less interested in Lopez as a musical artist and more interested in her “as a persona.”

On that note, Shaw and Belloni both observed that Lopez is back in demand for her acting, saying that her 2023 Netflix action thriller, “The Mother,” was a hit for the streaming service.

Her new documentary, “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” also has generated buzz because of its focus on her relationship with Affleck, who has become her fourth husband. Since they married in 2022, Lopez and Affleck have been proved to be surprisingly engaging creative collaborators, including on his popular Dunkin’ Donuts commercials . The couple also have put themselves out to the world as exemplars for mid-life romance and for a celebrity brand of blended-family parenting.

The film has garnered plenty of positive reviews but it also have given more ammunition to Lopez’s detractors, prompting Los Angeles Times writer Alex Zaragoza to ask in an essay , “Why does everyone suddenly hate Jennifer Lopez?”

TikTokers came down especially hard on a moment in the film when Lopez is seen in her home gym after a work-out, letting out her hair and shaking it out with her hands, Zaragoza reported.

“I like taking my hair out like this,” Lopez said a 13-second clip from the film that went viral. “It reminds me like, when I was 16 in The Bronx running up and down the block. Crazy little girl who used to be (expletive) wild. No limits, all dreams and (expletive…”

To TikTok users, the moment was seen as a failed attempt by the megastar to prove her humility and force a connection to her roots as a regular “Jenny From the Block” from the Bronx, Zaragoza said

“I understand that you’re trying to milk this whole ‘I’m humble, I’m from the hood,’” one TikTok user said in commenting on the clip. “This story doesn’t really work for you anymore… This whole story of her trying to seem relatable and more, you know, ‘normal,’ it’s not really gonna work for you. Just stop.”

Zaragoza wrote that authenticity and personal narrative have long been a part “of the fame machine,” and performing authenticity “is a razors-edge walk for anyone in the spotlight.” The writer noted that audiences will turn on a celebrity as soon as they become “too annoying, too present, too cute, to anything, particularly if you’re a woman.”
