Long Doha Layover? Go for the Doha City Tour

If you often travel east, there is no doubt, you’ve used Qatar’s airport for your connecting flight. And it’s not uncommon that while chasing perfect dates or low prices, to be forced to have a boring long Doha layover.

To be honest, I enjoy the big international airports. Seeing so many different people from different cultures has always been fascinating for me, but even though Hamad Airport is one of the best airports in the world, spending more than 4 hours there feels like a massive waste of time. After all, my vacation days are limited, and I want to spend them hiking volcanos or exploring new cultures , not sitting on my ass, waiting for a flight, right?

Thankfully the Qatar Airways people have thought of that and offer you the opportunity to go around Doha, learn more about it, and still catch your plane on time. Even though Qatar’s reputation is very controversial, the chance to explore such a unique and interesting culture is not to be missed.

Discover Qatar – Doha City Tour

There are several tour offers, but the most popular one (and also the cheapest ) is the Doha City Tour. On my last long Doha layover, I decided to check it out and see if it’s worth it.

So, what is the Doha City Tour like?

After signing up and getting out of the airport (that may take an hour), you board an AC bus and get a bottle of water. There is also a guide provided so don’t be afraid you’d miss anything worthwhile.

doha layover - downtown

While you don’t have a Colosseum or Eifel Tower to marvel at, you’d start paying attention to the city as a whole. And boy oh boy Doha really is a bizarre place with a distinctive identity.

The first thing that made me quite the impression were the lamps. The whole lamposts are covered with large Arabic words, according to my guide – quotes from the Coran. Lamposts are very important for the city’s identity, and the Doha ones do a good job reminding you that you are now in a strictly Muslim country.

In 15 minutes we reached the first stop of the Doha City Tour:

The Doha Harbor

doha layover - doha city tour - harbor view

The harbor is right next to the Museum of Islamic Art, but since you have only 5 to 10 minutes per stop, you won’t be able to check it out. The highlight of the harbor is not the boats or the pearl statue on the entrance, but the magnificent panoramic view of the city.

And while 5 minutes may seem too little time to enjoy, I found it to be just enough to take some photos and enjoy the sight before getting too hot ( TIL: The whole country of Qatar is built in the desert ).

For our next stop, we went into downtown Doha, so I had the chance to observe more of the daily life of Qatar’s capital. The first thing that struck me as a weird one was the lack of color. Most of the buildings were painted in desert yellowish while 90% of the cars were either black or white.

As per my guide, the reason for that is the desert sand. Using those colors is just a way to make things look cleaner. How come a white car covered in desert dust looks cleaner than a red car covered in desert dust is beyond me, but I guess people who lived their whole life in the sands knows better than me.

Katara Cultural Village

doha layover - katara

Stop number 2 of my Doha layover trip was the Katara Cultural Village . With the idea to position the State of Qatar as a cultural beacon a lighthouse of art, radiating in the Middle East through theatre, literature, music, visual art, conventions, and exhibitions, it did sound like an exciting place to see.

Sadly we didn’t have the time to check any art exhibition but the walk around the oddly fascinating art and mosques were enough to convince me this is a place I should come back to.

doha city tour - katara

Making our way to the third stop, we kept seeing more and more of the city, and I realized that the only people I see outside were immigrants working on construction sites.

It was Thursday morning, and in any other major city the streets would’ve been buzzing with people going to work, but Doha was empty. I guess Qataris didn’t bother going early to work. Such a different world.

doha city tour - the pearl

The third stop of the Doha City Tour was an artificial island called The Pearl . You probably didn’t know ( I certainly didn’t), but before the oil boom, Qatar was one of the significant pearl traders of Asia.

To honor their heritage, the Qatari people (or more like the Qatari sheik) decided to build an artificial island that resembles the shape of a string of pearls, right on top of a former pearl diving site (who need pearls when you have oil, right?).

Spanning nearly four million square meters, it is also the first land in Qatar to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals.

doha layover - the pearl

Besides the security, there were no people around. Not even a single one. You see, I come from a small country, I’m used to not having tons of people around me, but still, having absolutely no one, was a strange feeling that made me watch behind my back more than once, expecting to see some zombies. The dozens of luxury boats and skyscrapers made a good photo background though.

On our way to the last stop, we passed through some diplomatic neighborhoods and were asked not to take pictures. The guide explained all diplomats and Qatari people value their privacy, so they build big walls around their houses. Man, they’re gonna have a tough time during the Fifa World Cup in 2022.

Souq Waqif Market

The last stop of my Doha layover trip was Souq Waqif market. We were given a whole 30 minutes to explore it and buy some stuff (not that any of us got any Qatari money). The market was quite pleasant, and there were some real people there!

It was built in the traditional Arabic way and sold all kinds of stuff from souvenirs and clothing to animals and spices. Unlike the other Arabic bazaars, there weren’t annoying hawkers trying to hijack you into their shop, which made walking around Souq Waqif relaxing and enjoyable.

After a delightful 30-40 minutes (a Chinese guy got lost, so we had to wait for him) we were back on the bus and on our way back to the airport.

While lacking any real attractions and having only 5-10 minutes per stop, I’m happy I took the Doha City Tour. Having this extra journey within my journey, showed me such a different culture that awoke my curiosity about Qatar and its people big time. One thing is for sure though – this long Doha layover was the most interesting one I’ve had by a longshot!

Thank you Richard,

Doha's airport is the only one I'd deliberately plan a long layover too. They have some desert tours I want to try next time.

Doha, the capital of Qatar, has grown rapidly in recent years into a city of glitzy architecture and international influence. It also has a long Bedouin history and the world’s largest museum of Islamic art.

While there’s something for every type of traveler here, it leans toward the luxury type, or those who want a quick intro to the Gulf’s history and artistic masterpieces. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the airport or an hour on the metro, and visitors who book through Qatar Airways can even hop on a free city tour.

  • VISA REQUIRED:  Yes, issued free upon arrival
  • MINIMUM CONNECTION TIME, INTERNATIONAL TO DOMESTIC: 45 mins ‍
  • MINIMUM CONNECTION TIME, INTERNATIONAL TO INTERNATIONAL: 90 mins ‍
  • MINIMUM CONNECTION TIME TO LEAVE THE AIRPORT: 6 hrs

Doha skyline.

Visa info for Qatar

US passport holders and those from 79 other countries receive a free visa on arrival.

Minimum layover times in Doha

To make an international to domestic connection: 45 mins.

You’ll need a minimum of 45 minutes. If you book through Qatar Airways and have a short connection or a flight that’s running late, the airline will send a representative to meet you on arrival and take you to your connecting gate.

To make an international to international connection: 60-90 mins

Typically one hour is enough, though some flights have a minimum connection time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The airport is well organized with many signs and international connections are easy.

To leave the airport and explore for part of the day: 6 hours

You’ll want to give yourself about two hours to get back to the airport and go through security so a layover of six hours only leaves you with about three hours of exploring. For more time to haggle in the souq or have a leisurely meal, 8-10 hours is even better.

  • 45 minutes to deplane and go through immigration and customs
  • 15-30 mins to transit to downtown, depending on traffic
  • 3.5 hours to explore
  • 15-25 minutes to return to airport
  • 1.5 hours to go back through security, get to your gate, and board the plane

Getting from the Doha Hamad International Airport to the city center

  • ‍ BUS : 20-30 mins ‍
  • TAXI: 15-25 mins ‍
  • METRO: 20 mins

There are several ways to reach the Doha city center from the airport.

The bus runs three routes throughout the day, with one 24-hour route. They cost around $1, depending on where you go, and run every 20-30 minutes. The trip takes about 40 minutes.

Karwa taxis are available at the taxi pavillion to the left of the arrivals hall. All taxis are metered and the fare starts at QAR 25, which is about $7. From there they cost QAR 1.20 (33 cents) per kilometre between 5pm and 9pm and QAR 1.80 (49 cents) per kilometre between 9pm and 5am. Taxis only accept cash and only in local currency. The drive into the city center takes 15-25 minutes.

Uber is available from Hamad International Airport. Trips to the city center cost between $7-9 and take 15-25 minutes.

The metro is one of the easiest ways to reach cultural attractions. The station is inside the airport and goes directly to major tourist and business centers. A day pass costs QAR 6, or $1.65 and takes about 20 minutes.

How to spend a short layover at the Doha airport

The Hamad International Airport (DOH) opened in 2014 but is already under construction again in preparation for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. The expanded airport will feature a large tropical garden and the world’s largest airport lounge. For now, the main attraction is “Lamp Bear,” a 22-foot bronze statue of a teddy bear with its head in a lamp by Swiss artist Urs Fischer. It’s on display in the duty-free shopping hall, so you can’t miss it.

Shopping is big at this airport. There are about 50 designer stores spread throughout the atrium and concourses. Food is somewhat lacking, though. There are a few chains, an Italian restaurant, and a nicer restaurant called Caviar House, which serves caviar and champagne. Take a stroll, do some window shopping, drink some bubbles, and take advantage of the free and fast WiFi. If you have extra time, squeeze in a massage or nail treatment at the spa in Concourse C.

How to spend a short Doha layover outside the airport

Museum of Islamic Art.

If you have limited time in Doha but want to experience the best it has to offer, visit the Souq and the Museum of Islamic Art.

Start with the Museum of Islamic Art, which is the largest collection of its kind in the world. It’s big and can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re in a rush. Luckily, the museum’s curators have pulled together short, self-guided tours that take you through highlights based on your preferences.

Next head to the Souq Waqif for a bite to eat and for a taste of history. Once an ancient Bedouin trading market, it later fell into disrepair and then burned, but was rebuilt in the early 2000s. Stock up on souvenirs like spices and textiles, or maybe even a silver dagger. Then eat your way through Qatari, Yemeni, Iranian, Moroccan, and other cuisines. Don’t miss the Falcon Souq within Souq Waqif. Bedouins traditionally used falcons to hunt, but today they’re used for racing and are an important national symbol. Browse the shops filled with falconry tools and ask the owners about the sport.

Walk along the corniche. Start at Souq Waqif and head west toward the skyscrapers for a tour of past to present. It’s a nice walk along the water and will give you a good look at the city’s main sights and architecture.

How to spend an overnight layover in Doha

A longer layover in Doha gives you time to check out the National Museum of Qatar, where you can learn about the country’s history and recent economic boom. Almost as impressive is the building itself, designed by architect Jean Nouvel to look like a desert rose crystal. Art lovers might prefer Katara Cultural Village, the art and culture hub of the city with artist spaces, galleries, and an outdoor amphitheater. There are often festivals and concerts in Katara, and plenty of cafes and restaurants.

Brunch is the thing to do in Doha, so use your morning to blend with local culture at Market by Jean-Georges at the W Hotel. Still have some time? Visit The Pearl, Doha’s man-made island, or take a short dune-bashing tour in the desert.

Stay near the Souq, where there are a range of hotels from budget options to the Four Seasons. It’s convenient and walkable, plus close to nightlife.

Though alcohol is mostly banned in Doha outside of hotels, there is a large expat population and nightlife is easy to find. Visit any of the bars or lounges at high-end hotels and you’ll find people willing to stay up until the early hours. The Club at St. Regis has a jazz club vibe, while Nobu is flashy. And there’s always Irish Harp, your classic Irish pub in the Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel.

Layover tours and free hotel stays in Doha

Souq Waqif.

If you have a six-hour layover, you may be eligible for the Free Doha City Tour by Qatar Airways. For 75 QAR, or about $20, travelers can take a guided group tour of Doha, drive past famous monuments, and learn about Katara, The Pearl, Museum of Islamic Art, and Souq Waqif. Or, for 250 QAR, about $69, you can go on a desert adventure or a city tour with a private car. Other excursions include a golf trip or day use of Souq Waqif hotel. Book online or visit the Discover Qatar Tours desk at Concourse A.

When you book a Qatar Airways flight with a layover in Doha of at least 12 hours (and up to four days), you can receive a four-star hotel room for $14.

Need to Know

  • ‍ CURRENCY: Qatari Rial  ‍
  • LANGUAGE: Arabic and English ‍
  • SAFETY: A+ ‍
  • COST: $$$ (out of $$$$$)
  • BEST TIME TO GO: Nov-Feb

Currency in Qatar

The official currency is the Qatari Rial. You can exchange USD for Qatari Rial at the airport, or withdraw cash from numerous ATMs. There are plenty of banks in Doha with ATM use for tourists as well.

Cost in Doha

A 3-star Doha hotel costs on average $60 per night, while a meal in a mid-range restaurant costs about $55 for two. A beer or cocktail in a hotel is around $12.

Weather & Best Time to Go to Doha

Doha rarely gets cold, but summers can be brutally hot, with an average temperature of 109F in July (though it can reach up to 120F). May through September have average temperatures in the low 100s, and late fall cools to an average of 97F in October and 86F in November. Winters are mild and warm. January and February both have an average temperature of 75F, which rises throughout spring to the 90s. Winter or the shoulder seasons are the best time to visit.

Safety in Doha

Doha is a very safe city. It was even recently ranked the second-safest city in the world. Women and men can feel safe walking alone day or night and violent crime is very low, as is theft.

Transport in Doha

Careem (a ride hailing app popular in the Middle East) and Uber are the easiest way to get around and ensure you’ll get to your destination without issues. Taxis are slightly cheaper, and also very easy. The metro is also easy and cheap.

Food & Drink in Doha

Doha has a wide ranging food scene, from Michelin-starred restaurants to casual street food spots. While you can get Italian, Brazilian, and more, if you have limited time stick with traditional Qatari dishes, which are heavily influenced by India and Iran. Perhaps the most famous dish is Machboos, a spiced rice with vegetables and any kind of meat, sprinkled with rose water and lemon and served with chili sauce. Walima in the Mondrian Doha makes a nice version, as does Al Sufra.

Harees, a cracked wheat porridge with meat, and foul (beans) are also popular. Don’t miss the sweets! Umm ali, a raisin bread pudding, and luqaimat–fried, sticky doughnuts–are Qatari favorites. For a traditional market experience, visit Souq Waqif. The fruit and vegetable market has been updated from its original state and includes restaurants and cafes, but retains some old-world charm.

Qataris speak Arabic, though English is widely spoken as a second language.

The Arabian horses outside the Falcon Souq, bargaining over antique coffee pots or detailed copper plates, and tasting some of the world’s best dates in Souq Waqif.

Don’t bother

Malls are popular in Doha, but overrated. They’re massive, but contain the same stores you’ll find anywhere else, and aren’t particularly interesting to look at otherwise.

The most amazing things to do on a long layover in qatar.

Do you have the option to stop over in Qatar? Here is a guide to the best things to do, whether it be a whirlwind 5-hour stop or a jam-packed 12-hour Qatar itinerary! You will also find essential tips for travelling on a long layover in Qatar, along with the new and updated entrance fees to the museums.

The basics of a long layover in Qatar

Passing through immigration.

When you arrive for your layover in Doha City, you will need to make your way out of the airport. Before you decide on a layover, make sure to check your government’s advice if you need a transit visa. Citizens of over 95 countries are eligible for visa-free entry by using the Qatar ETA . The UK is one of them. You can check if you need a visa here .

After you pass through immigration, you will see an information desk. Here you can grab a map and ask any questions regarding events, transport, food, customs, and traditions.

Withdrawing money

There are a few ATMs and a currency exchange desk in the airport near where you collect your luggage. However, if you’re travelling on a direct ticket, there is no need to collect your luggage to lug it around the streets of Qatar with you.

We withdrew money from the HSBC bank just before going through the nothing to declare area. The exchange rate was reasonable and in line with the XE converter. As a couple, we withdrew 150 Qatari Rials ($41.20), which was enough for a day pass each on the 777 bus, food and drink in the evening, ice cream, a fridge magnet, and a short taxi ride.

Dress code for Qatar

As always, when going to a new country, it’s important to be aware of the local culture and dress code. As we were preparing to leave our home in Vietnam , and as we had never been to the Middle East before, we were left wondering if Katie would need to cover her hair, or if Jake would need to wear long trousers. Turns out neither is necessary! For women, we recommend wearing tops that cover your shoulders and chest (nothing too revealing), and a skirt or 3/4 pants that cover your knees. For men, anything will do. But make sure to wear a top!

Skyline of Qatar and the dress code

Leaving the airport

By taxi or bus.

To get away from Hamad International Airport, you have the option of a taxi or bus. Taxis run to the centre of Doha in around 20 minutes and prices start from 25 Qatari Rials ($6.87). As taxis can be quite costly, we opted for the bus. At just 20 Qatari Rials ($5.49) for an all-day bus pass, you can’t go wrong. The bus was super easy to use and ran every 20 minutes. Note: The last bus back to the airport is at 11 pm.

To catch the bus, after you have left immigration, turn right and follow the signs for buses. You can buy your bus ticket at the vending machine, which you will need the exact change for. Alternatively, you can purchase your ticket directly from the bus driver on the bus.

Individual bus tickets cost between 2.50-7 Qatari Rials ($0.69-1.92), depending on your drop-off point.

Bus number 777 will take you almost everywhere you need to go on this itinerary!

Vending machine for all-day bus pass in Qatar

Via pre-organised tour with Qatar Airways

Until recently, customers flying with Qatar Airways with a layover of 4+ hours were offered a complimentary tour of Doha. Now, who doesn’t like free stuff!? We were quite bummed out to find out that Qatar Airways have now stopped this service and instead charges 75 Qatari Rials ($20.60) per person for the same tour.

If you still want to pay, you can go to the Qatar Airways desk after you exit the plane to book your place, on the Doha City tour . We recommend this tour for anyone who is in a tight time frame. If you only have 4 to 5 hours to explore Doha, this is the quickest and risk-free way of getting around, and back to the airport in time for your connecting flight.

Places to see in Doha on a layover (6 – 8 hours)

Be mind-boggled at the museum of islamic art.

The first stop you will arrive at on the 777 bus, is the Museum of Islamic Art on your right-hand side. The structure of the museum is a work of art in itself. Unfortunately, we didn’t go inside as our layover was during Ramadan and the museum was closed during the day, and we didn’t have much time left when it re-opened at 8 pm. Unfortunately, since 28th March 2019, the museum stopped allowing free entry to foreign visitors. The entrance cost is now 50 Qatari Rials ($13.73) for adults or 100 Qatari Rials ($27.47) for a museum pass that will allow you entrance for 3 consecutive days to all museums in Qatar.

Museum of Islamic Art - Doha, Qatar

Stroll along the Corniche

After wandering around with your mind boggled at fascinating structures in the art museum, it is time to step outside and clear your mind with a relaxing stroll along the Corniche. The Corniche is a 7 km stretch of road that hugs the bay, where the old wooden boat dock and the memorizing skyline pop up. If you’re not down for a long walk, the best spot for photos is by the Pearl Monument.

Take a historical journey on a dhow boat

Hop on a dhow boat to embark on a historical journey along Qatar’s waters. The dhow boats are traditional vessels that were used for everyday life before Qatar discovered the country was rich in oil. A ride on a dhow boat will cost between 30-40 Qatari Rials ($8.24-10.99) per person.

Dhow boats - Doha, Qatar

Feel luxurious along the Pearl Boulevard

Next, hop back onto the 777 bus down to Pearl Boulevard (the last stop). The Pearl is the iconic area that has an unusual shape that sticks out to visitors when flying over the gulf. Along this strip are tons of eateries and places to replenish with tasty juice. As you stroll along the boulevard, get a glimpse of the glamorous lifestyle whilst admiring the marina full of extravagant yachts.

Boats and buildings along the Pearl Boulevard in Doha, Qatar

Step back in time at Souq Waqif Old town

After a replenishing time at the Pearl, jump back onto the 777 bus where you got off, and head down to Souq Waqif. Sadiq Waqif is the oldest part of town. With its stone cream-washed walls, tiny alleyways, and stalls selling Aladdin carpets, you will feel like you have stepped back in time. Along this road, you will find plentiful opportunities to pick up souvenirs and plentiful places to wrap your taste buds around Middle Eastern cuisine.

Souq Waqif - Doha, Qatar

Delve into Qatar’s history at the National Museum

Absorb the history of Qatar from its earliest days to the present day. Stroll around the exhibitions and buck up on your knowledge of this tiny, but rich, country. As with the Museum of Islamic Art, the National Museum is no longer free. It will cost you 50 Qatari Rials ($13.73) to enter, or 100 Qatari Rials ($27.47) for a museum pass.

Head back to the airport for your flight

It’s time to wave bye-bye to Qatar! Take the 777 bus directly back to the airport. The bus will drop you off at the same place you got on. You can enter the airport terminal directly from the drop-off point.

Things to add on an 8 to 12-hour-long layover in Doha

If you have a couple of hours extra to stop over in Doha, or have a car to whizz you around, consider adding these stops to your itinerary!

The 2022 World Cup football stadium

Qatar is the first Arab state due to host the FIFA World Cup in 2022! If time permits, then don’t miss out on the chance to stop by one of the planned venues for the world-famous football tournament. Each stadium, with an expected capacity of over 40,000, and impressive designs, will not fail to amaze the football frenzies out there.

Take a dunes tour

Head 40 km south of Doha to the Singing Dunes. Organise a professional driver to help you discover the famous desert area that is popular for activities such as dune-bashing and buggy riding. You have the choice of full-day tours and half-day tours.

Travelling in Qatar during Ramadan

Will you be on your long layover in Qatar during Ramadan? When we organised our 13-hour layover, it completely slipped our minds that it would be Ramadan at that time. Once we realised this, we were left with quite a few concerns and questions. Would we be able to drink water? Will shops and museums be open? Will public transport still be running?

Eat and Drink – During Ramadan, it’s illegal to eat or drink in public areas, even for foreign visitors! The only exception is pregnant women and children. So, if you do have a long layover in Qatar during Ramadan, you will need to be prepared to go without food and water for a few hours or to fork out for an expensive meal behind closed doors at one of the hotels.

Food time - Doha, Qatar

Shops and museums – As for shops and museums, pretty much everything is closed during the afternoon. On our visit, the museums opened in the morning and closed at 2 pm, and re-opened at 8 pm. However, opening and closing times may vary slightly each year according to the times of sunrise and sunset.

Public transport – Public transport seemed to be running as normal. The buses ran regularly and on time. The roads seemed clear and there was not too much traffic on the roads, even as the time of Iftar (evening meal) approached.

Hotel recommendations for a long layover in Qatar

Budget rooms: Green Garden Hotel – As far as prices go in Qatar, this hotel is one of the cheapest places that is a high rating. The hotel offers comfy double beds and large rooms.

Feeling luxurious: The Torch Doha – Offers stylish rooms and a large swimming pool to cool down from the mid-day heat. The hotel gets its name as it’s shaped like a torch; another unique building among many in Doha.

We hope this post has helped you plan your long layover in Qatar. If you’re heading for Southeast Asia, check out our backpacking Thailand guide to help you get started with your trip.

Essential resources for a stopover in Qatar

Travel Insurance – No matter where you’re travelling to, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re covered for any accidents or losses. We spent days and weeks searching for insurance, but most insurers would not allow us to take out a policy as we were already abroad. Our personal choice is Safteywing . Qatar Layover: The best things to do in Doha While on a Transit

Are you going on a flight with transit/stopover in Qatar soon? Check out the Qatar layover deals with Qatar Airways and you can enjoy so many cool things to do in Doha!

When we talk about Qatar, the first two things that come to our mind is oil and money. I know this very well because I’ve worked in one of the biggest oil industries in Iraq where I’ve met a lot of expats who came to the Middle East for the same thing– career and money. I even lived and worked in Kuwait too!

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover

As I went out of the Airport in Doha, Qatar, everything felt familiar. The Middle East had been my home for quite some time and I feel very much acquainted to the busy atmosphere. The difference is that this time, I’m not here for work or money, I’m here on a 20-hour layover and I’m visiting as a tourist 🙂

Knowing that there’s a lot of Filipinos working here, I also organized a meet-up with our readers. In fact, Ate Analiz and her daughter were kind enough to pick me up from the airport and drove me to the hotel. Anyway, here’s what you can do on a long layover in Doha!

WHERE I STAYED IN DOHA, QATAR

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover7

For this long layover, I was hosted by Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery in a very nice suite. I was received very well by their staff and their king-size MyBed™ totally felt like I’m lying down on clouds! This is perfect since I’ve been traveling non-stop for the past few weeks.

They also have an ala carte Breakfast for all the guests, separate living area, Free WiFi, Two TVs, Nespresso machine, BOSE docking station, spacious desk (which is perfect since I am still working even on vacation), Minibar, separate shower and bathtub, Premium bath amenities exclusive to the hotel, bathrobes and slippers sized for each guest, Makeup mirror and Salon-quality hairdryer.

You can also nourish your mind, body, and soul at their M Spa or burn the stress away at their M Fitness Center. Oh, what about lounging in their pool area? 🙂

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover11

Another thing is that it is located in the heart of the city and is conveniently next to Souq Waqif where you can shop and dine. Oh, have I told you that this hotel is licensed to sell alcohol?? This is one of the best things here, so this place is perfect for expats and tourists to just drink the night away!

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover6

For those whose traveling with the same airline for your onward flight, you might want to check with them if they’d be paying for your accommodation. Other airlines have that! Otherwise, I recommend you book Alwadi Hotel Doha – MGallery .

WHAT TO DO IN DOHA, QATAR ON YOUR LONG LAYOVER

1) Go on a Desert Safari and Camel Ride – Aside from meeting some of our lovely readers in Doha over drinks and dinner, I also went on a Desert Safari and Camel Ride with Ate Analiz and her daughter all arranged by my favorite experience giving website, Tinggly Experience .

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover1

Our tour started with a hotel pick-up and we traveled all the way to Khawr al Udayd, the famed ‘inland sea’ that is an inlet of the Persian Gulf and was once a notorious settlement of Arabic pirate.

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover4

This is a true Arabian experience as we drove up the sand dunes with a 4×4 and learned about the desert’s history from our knowledgeable tour guide. We then had a magical camel ride (too bad it ain’t a magic carpet haha). Seeing this beautiful place as a tourist is something I’d love to do all over again!

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover27

2) For Filipinos, eat at Jollibee!- For Filipinos based abroad (just like me), I know that the famous Jollibee Chicken Joy and Spaghetti is something you always miss from back home. This is the perfect opportunity to have that sumptuous food we’ve always been craving for!

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover4

3) Visit the  Katara Cultural Village, The Pearl, Museum of Islamic Art, and the Souq Waqif- Did you know that when you have a 6-hour layover in Doha with Qatar Airways, you can tour the city with them for just more or less 20 USD?? It’s gonna be one heck of a memorable layover as you embark on this historical tour.

Transit In Qatar The Best Things To Do For A Long Layover3

Katara Cultural Village features wonderful walking areas lined up with pretty restaurants and cafes taking you to a wondrous historical, artistic, and luxurious getaway. Watch out for workshops, events, and concerts that you might encounter while you’re here!

TRANSIT IN QATAR THE BEST THINGS TO DO ON A LONG LAYOVER2

The Pearl is a man-made island and is the most glamorous address in the Middle East. This place boasts luxury in every corner as you see branded stores, yacht-lined marinas, towering residential towers, and upscale hotels. It’s not hard to see why this is also called the Arabian Riviera.

TRANSIT IN QATAR THE BEST THINGS TO DO ON A LONG LAYOVER1

Another stop is the Museum of Islamic Art where you’ll get to see marvelous art pieces from 3 continents which date as far back as 1,400 years ago. Its famous collection includes metalwork, ceramics, jewelry, woodwork, textiles, and glass.

Finally, the Souq Waqif where you can just wine, dine and watch the world go by. This is the perfect place to shop for souvenirs, spices, fabrics, and perfume!

That’s it for this post! I hope you enjoy your long layover as much as I did. To all our wonderful readers in Qatar, thank you for meeting me and thank you for always inspiring me! 🙂

My wife and I will have a 9-hour layover in DOHA on our flight back to Manila, what is the best thing to do while as a transit passenger in DOHA terminal?

I am planning to fly Qatar Airways to visit Chicago (USA) during early June 21 and will try yo get a 11 hour lay over in Doha. Help me plan for the trip within a slim budget for two persons. Do i Have to take out my luggage during this transit ? Thanks

Hi! Do I need a visa if I want to go out of the airport during a layover?

Yes you need a visa.

I have an 8 hr layover in Doha next month and this is what I found out today at the Qatar airways website… https://www.qatarairways.com/en-no/visa-free-arrival.html

Nationals from more than 80 countries* can now take advantage of visa-free entry into Qatar, thanks to our new visa waiver upon arrival. Citizens of these countries will not need to apply or pay for a visa; instead, a multi-entry waiver will be issued at the airport, upon presentation of a valid passport (valid for a minimum of six months) and a confirmed onward or return ticket.

But if you can see, Philippines passport holders is not on the list because we need a visa. Another option for you – you can apply for e-visa (very quick) if you have valid visa USA, Canada, Schengen, Australia etc

Doha City Tour With Discover Qatar: An Honest Review

Beautiful architecture at Katara cultural village

Would you like to learn more about the Doha City Tour with Discover Qatar? Then you have come to the right place!

If you travel east, chances are that you will use the Doha airport for your connecting flight. You might have a long layover in Doha , with plenty of time to kill before hopping on your next flight.

What better way to spend that time than by getting out of the airport to explore a new city that you wouldn’t visit otherwise?

Discover Qatar offers a 3-hour long city tour of Doha which will take you to the city’s main attractions. I took this tour to check out if it was worth it and the answer is YES !

Although Doha might not be a city that attracts many tourists, it does have some beautiful sights. I really enjoyed gazing at the skyscrapers one moment and visiting the traditional souqs the next.

You will find my experience, along with some useful information in case you want to do the Doha Transit Tour in this post.

Doha city tour with Discover Qatar

The places you will see.

After booking the tour and leaving the airport, I boarded the air-conditioned bus with a small group of people who had booked the same tour.

We met our guide, who told us about the country and explained we’d make four stops. These were the following:

The harbour

Doha city tour: the skyline

After about 15 minutes on the bus, we made our first stop at the Doha harbour, which is right next to the Museum of Islamic Art.

You won’t be able to really check this museum out though, as the bus only makes a 10-minute stop in order for you to snap some pictures of the panoramic skyline , which is the harbour’s highlight.

Katara Cultural Village

Kantara village

My favourite stop was the next one: Katara Cultural Village, which aims to promote cultural awareness in Qatar.

Although everything was closed due to Ramadan, the stunning Arabic-inspired architecture literally made my jaw drop. From its amphitheatre to the beautiful Katara Masjid mosque , the cultural village is definitely worth a visit!

We had some time to walk around and take some pictures here, but I wished we could have stayed a little longer. It’s a very beautiful and photogenic place that I would love to visit again one day.

Doha city tour: The Pearl

Stop number three was The Pearl: an artificial island situated off the coast of Doha. It’s full of yachts and luxurious apartments, restaurants and hotels.

The name “The Pearl” was chosen because it was built on one of Qatar’s previous pearl diving sites. Before the oil boom, the country was one of the main pearl traders in Asia .

We walked around The Pearl for about 20 minutes, which was just enough for me. Then, we hopped on the bus to drive to our final stop.

Souq Waqif

Our last stop was the Soup Waqif, where we had an hour to explore the market. Unlike the souqs I have visited in North Africa, the vendors didn’t aggressively try to get you into their shops and sell you stuff, which was a very nice, refreshing experience.

They sell all kinds of things at Souq Waqif, from souvenirs to clothes, spices and even small animals.

The souq dates back at least a hundred years but it was renovated in 2006 after most of it was destroyed by a fire a few years before.

Here, we had the choice to either take the bus back to the airport or stay in the city and return by ourselves later. I didn’t have that much time left before catching my flight so this is when the Doha city tour stopped for me.

Bus Discover Doha city tour

How to book Discover Qatar’s city tour of Doha

You can book the tour in advance on the Discover Qatar website or go to their counter at the Doha airport.

Follow the A gate and take the first flat escalator (I’m not sure what those things are called in English?). You will find the desk on the left side. This is also the place where the tour leaves.

The 3-hour tour of Doha that I took cost 99 QAR but there are other tours to choose from, depending on the time you have and your budget.

I didn’t have to pay a visa fee, but it depends on your citizenship. You can check if your country belongs to the visa-free countries here .

Tips for the Qatar City Tour

  • Bring water and sunscreen.
  • Always take your valuables with you when you leave the bus.
  • Ask for your tour operator’s contact number if you’re taking the bus back after the last stop. You never know what might happen and the bus doesn’t wait in case you get delayed.

Discover Qatar City Tour: Final thoughts

All in all, I had a great time on the Discover Qatar City Tour!

It takes you to Doha’s highlights and gives you an idea of what the city is like. There were places where I would have loved to stay longer but I know this wasn’t possible due to the limited time you have on a layover.

I would recommend this tour and would do it again in a heartbeat! It’s a great way to make the most of your layover and see a little bit of Doha.

I will have an 8-hour layover in Doha next month and am considering this tour. Is there a place to store one’s carry-on bag at the airport? Or do you bring it on the tour with you?

Hi Nadia, I think there must probably be a place to store your carry-on somewhere at the airport, but I took it with me so I’m not sure. Enjoy Doha!

' src=

Hi… I have a long layover in Doha. Want to leave the airport. I have some questions about you leaving the airport.

Did you have to get recovid tested? Do you need a Qatar SIM card or does the airport Wi-Fi have a strong enough connection for the health app?

Hi Mark, I did this before Covid, so I don’t know about the test. The wifi at the airport was good though!

' src=

Hi Laura, would just like to ask if the Pokefi 5g lte will work on an iPhone 8 and a laptop or does it only work on the latest devices?

Hi Ami, I think it would work because you just need to connect the wifi to start using it. But I would ask the Pokefi client service if you want to be sure. 😉

' src=

Hi Laura. I took the city tour from Qatar Airways 2 weeks ago while my transit in Rwanda. The tour was great but unfortunately it ended with one of the worst experiences in my life. The last station was the market and the tour operator gave us 20 minutes to go around. I lost my way back and I delayed 8 minutes to reach the meeting point. After waiting for 15 minutes, I realized that they left without me with my bag in the bus and without any contact to communicate. All my things (passport, money, credit cards, laptop) were in the bus and with just 8 minutes delay they left without me, in the middle of nowhere. After 1 hour of stress trying to find someone to talk, to find my bag and get back to the airport, I realized that they don’t care about their customers safety and there are no ways to be justified. Moreover, the taxi driver instead of 7 usd, he charged me 20 usd to take me back to the airport. I was charged 100 usd for the calls to find my bag and my way back to the airport.

Hi Nicos, I’m so sorry for what has happened to you, I can imagine that must have been a horrible experience! 🙁 It’s true that there should be a way to contact them in case something like this happens. I know it’s not much, and it certainly doesn’t make anything better, but I’ve added some tips at the end of this post that will hopefully prevent things like this from happening again.

' src=

Hi Nicola, did you have to get COVID tested or download any app in order to travel on the transit tour?

' src=

Hi Laura, thank you for sharing your experience and great information. I have a 12 hour layover at night in DOHA, do I need a transit to do the Discover Doha tour?

Hi Mari, I’m happy it’s helpful! 🙂 I’m not sure I understand what you mean with a transit. If you have a 12-hour layover, you are in transit, so it should be fine (I hope this helps). Also, it depends on the tours, but I see that you’re arriving at night, and for this one, the last one leaves at 9:30 pm. Hope your flight will be there in time!

' src=

after reading your review i also want to book this tour. My flight will arrive at 14:40. How long does it take to get to the Discover Qatar desk? Do i have to go through some security checks first? Do you think, taking flight delays into consideration, i can catch the tour starting from 16:00?

Please let me know – Thank you in advance

Sorry, i meant the tour starting from 18:00 because nowadays they want you to show up 2h prior

Hi Thomas, I didn’t have to go through any checkpoints when I landed in Doha and got to the Discover Qatar desk pretty fast! So I think you will definitely have enough time to catch that tour. Enjoy! 🙂

' src=

I’ve been staying in Doha for sometime for now. I guess you need at least one full day to view major sights of Doha city,

How to Book Flights With Long Layovers and See More

When booking a longhaul flight, most travelers will search furiously to book the flight with the shortest layover – even if it means passing up an incredible cheap flight deal . Already faced with the idea of being on a plane for hours, we tend to think that faster is always better. But what if we told you that sometimes it pays to book flights with long layovers?

The beauty of long stopovers is that you can see more without having to spend more. You get to experience an entirely new city on the way to your destination without paying for an extra plane ticket.

Fortunately, learning how to book a flight with long layovers is easy. Read on to learn the two main ways to score a long layover so you can start to see more of the world for less.

Airlines That Offer Free Long Layovers

The first way to score an extended layover doesn’t require any advanced flight booking or travel hacking skills. Some of the world’s most popular airlines actually offer programs that allow you to get out of the airport and see a new city on your layover. In fact, these airlines encourage it so much that many of them actually offer free or cheap hotel stays .

When you take advantage of these programs, it’s like you’re getting a free trip to a brand new city. Who says traveling the world needs to be expensive?

TAP Air Portugal

With TAP Portugal’s stopover option , you can choose to book a long layover in Lisbon or Porto for up to 5 nights at no additional cost for airfare. In addition to waiving the stopover fee, TAP Portugal also offers exclusive deals and discounts at hotels and attractions throughout the city, making this program a great way to see Europe on a budget .

Iceland Air

With the Iceland Air Stopover Pass , travelers flying across the Atlantic can stay for 1-7 days at no additional airfare. With no additional airfare costs and already amazing flight deals, this layover is a great way to see one of the world’s most popular travel destinations.

Qatar Airways

When travelers book a Qatar Airways flight with a long layover – at least 12 hours – in Qatar, they can receive a free visa to enter the country, as well as 1-4 night hotel stay for a minimal booking fee. This long layover is an excellent chance to see this modern city as it gears up to host the 2022 World Cup.

If you’ve ever wanted a chance to experience Madrid, Spain, Iberia’s Hola Madrid program was made for you. Through the program, travelers passing through Madrid can stay in the city for up to 6 days at no additional airfare. Plus, Iberia encourages visitors to fully experience the city by offering steep deals and discounts, including 40% off your hotel booking and three free beers at Mahou.

Air Canada offers travelers to book a long layover in Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto for no additional airfare. Depending on which cabin you’re flying in, you’re also eligible to book a hotel room for free or at a reduced rate. What’s really great about Air Canada’s stopover option is that you can utilize it to and from your destination – giving you the option to see 3 different cities in one trip.

For travelers flying with Etihad, those with a connecting flight through Abu Dhabi can now leave the airport to adventure through this thrilling beachside city. Etihad’s stopover option provides travelers with a free two-night hotel stay and offers steeply discounted rates for longer or upgraded stays.

These are just a handful of airlines that offer an extended layover option. When booking flights to a city you’d like to explore, it never hurts to check what an airline’s stopover policy is.

How to Book Flights With Long Layovers

Whether your airline doesn’t offer a stopover option or there’s a specific city you’d like to visit, you’ll need to book your own long layover. An excellent way to do this is by using Google Flights , similar to any other flight search.

Use multi-city Search

First, perform a general search to your desired destination to get a feel for the best time to buy tickets. Next, choose a potential layover destination and do the same, again making a note of the best time to find cheap flights.

Then, perform a multi-city search by selecting it from the dropdown menu that also contains “round trip” and “one-way” options. Then add a third flight to your trip.

As for how you layout your trip, that’s entirely up to you. Just remember to include your layover city as your middle destination in the multi-city search. You can book your long layover for the beginning of your trip or on the way home. Example : Let’s say that you’re planning a trip from Chicago to Bangkok. As you're booking your flights, you decide that your trip to Asia is also the perfect opportunity to finally visit Tokyo, home of the 2020 Summer Olympics . You could book your trip so that your flight itinerary looks like this:

  • Chicago to Tokyo
  • Tokyo to Bangkok
  • Bangkok to Chicago

When you book a multi-city ticket through Google Flights, the length of your layover is completely up to you. Plus, because Google Flights provides the links to purchase tickets, you only need to perform a single search for all 3 of your tickets.

Fly Through a Popular Airport

We discussed this idea in our post about finding last minute flights as a digital nomad .

When performing searches to your target destination, pay attention to any cities where several flights seem to have a layover and determine if this is a city that you’d like to visit.

Then perform a few searches to see if you can find cheap flights from that city to your target destination. If you can, simply book two one way tickets: one to your long layover destination and one to your end destination.

Note that this option does carry some risk because if your first flight is delayed, you could miss your second flight to your end destination. However, you may also end up saving money, as flights from high-traffic airports tend to be cheaper, so you need to weigh the risk vs. the reward here.

An example of this that we’ve used in the past: Flying from Bali to New York City can be very expensive. Instead of booking this flight directly, one of our flight deal experts saved hundreds of dollars by first flying from Bali to Hong Kong, a very high-traffic airport. After spending a weekend exploring Hong Kong, he then flew from Hong Kong to New York City for only $199.

Time to Book Your Long Layover

Now that you know how to book flights with long layovers, it’s your turn to embrace layovers like a true veteran traveler.

The next time you receive one of our cheap flight deals to your inbox, see if you can add even more value to your trip by booking a long layover and let us know how it goes!

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

  • Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
  • Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
  • These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

Insider Today

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways offers a stopover program in Fiji for those traveling to and from Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations.

Related stories

Hotels and activities like ziplining and beach resorts can be booked through the airline as part of the stopover package.

Finnair allows passengers to book 6, 12, or 24-hour layovers in Helsinki at no additional fare charge and outlines itinerary ideas and information on its website , like transportation, free walking tours, and restaurants.

Customers can book a hotel through the airline and earn Finnair Plus points.

Iberia customers can plan a stopover in Madrid to or from an international destination for one to six nights at no extra cost.

Discounts on hotels, excursions, and transfers in the Spanish capital are available through Iberia.

Icelandair offers a stopover option for one to seven days in its capital city of Reykjavik on transatlantic itineraries for no additional charge.

The airline offers itinerary help and assistance in booking excursions and tours. Hotels need to be booked separately.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines considers itself one of the "most stopover -friendly" carriers in the world.

The stopovers, which trigger at 24 hours, are not limited to JAL's hubs in Tokyo but can be enjoyed in places like Osaka and Kyoto using the airline's multi-city booking tool.

Latam Airlines

Latam Airlines offers stopovers for between one and three days on flights that connect in São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Manaus, Curitiba, and Belem. Only international itineraries that connect in São Paulo.

Hotels and amenities can be booked via Latam, but the stopover booking is free.

Oman Air offers customizable stopover packages to give travelers time to explore the country's capital, Muscat, and beyond. An additional fare charge may be applicable, though the airline does not fly to the US.

Packages and a-la-carte options include discounted hotels for up to three nights, as well as organized tours, meals, and transfers.

Australian flag carrier Qantas offers its stopovers in a similar manner to JAL in that multi-city bookings can be manipulated to add extra days between flights in layover cities, like Bangkok, Osaka, or San Francisco.

This comes at no extra cost on eligible Qantas fares and can be used on its Oneworld partner airlines.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways' stopover program allows passengers with a minimum layover of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to choose from a list of deeply discounted four and five-star hotels. Certain flight itineraries allow for up to four nights.

Nightly hotel rates start at $14 per person for 1 night at four-star standard hotels, with premium five-star beach hotels starting at $30 per person for one night.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines' transit program gives economy and business-class travelers with at least eight and six-hour layovers, respectively, a free hotel room, meals, and transit, assuming certain fare conditions are met.

However, the connecting flight must be the earliest possible — meaning, similar to Emirates, passengers can't intentionally book a longer layover to be eligible for the complimentary perks.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, or SWISS, has a multi-city stopover booking tool on its website that allows passengers to find itineraries with extra days in Switzerland.

The cost of hotels and other perks is on the customer, though.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' stopover program is available via the multi-city tool, similar to other carriers, where travelers can add hotels, transfers, and activities. The stopover can last one to seven days.

Singapore also offers free transit tours to passengers with layover times between five and a half and 24 hours at Singapore's Changi Airport. It's first-come, first-serve and includes sightseeing around Singapore.

TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal allows customers to add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto between one and 10 days, offering discounts on hotels, food, and activities.

It also offers 25% off a domestic flight to a second Portuguese destination, like the Azores or Madeira islands, to take during the stopover.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines' stopover program gives economy travelers a one-night free hotel stay and business flyers a two-night free stay if the period between their connecting flights in Istanbul exceeds 20 hours.

Those traveling from the US in economy class can stay up to two nights in a four-star hotel, while those traveling in business can stay up to three nights in a five-star hotel.
