Ceiba is located on the main island with access to supermarkets, stores and more. From Ceiba, Vieques is a 35 to 45 minute ferry ride away. It is known for its bioluminescent Mosquito Bay, its coveted beaches and horses that roam freely around the island.

How Many Islands in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico is an archipelago that consists of the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller islands and cays.

In total, Puerto Rico consists of one main island and roughly 140 smaller islands, cays, and islets. However, only a few are inhabited or accessible to tourists.

What are the Best Islands to Visit in Puerto Rico?

Besides the main island of Puerto Rico, there are several smaller islands worth visiting. Vieques and Culebra are the most popular and offer beautiful beaches and nature reserves.

How to Island Hop in Puerto Rico

Commercial flights.

Cape Air has several daily flights between San Juan and Vieques and Culebra.

We did a commercial flight from San Juan to Culebra on a 9-passenger airplane. I actually sat right next to the pilot for the most thrilling flight of my life!

Chartered Flights

You can also charter a flight from Puerto Rico’s main island to one of the smaller islands. These are tiny planes and the cost to rent one out isn’t crazy expensive if you have a group of 6-9 people.

We did a 7-minute chartered flight to and from Vieques and it was such an adventurous experience! Our plane only had 9 seats and we had to be weighed before we got our seat assignments.

The ferry system in Puerto Rico is a cheap way to explore the surrounding islands. Two of the most popular Puerto Rico ferry destinations are Vieques and Culebra.

The main ferry terminal is located in Ceiba, on the eastern coast of the main island, which is about an hour’s drive from San Juan.

Another really great option for doing Puerto Rico day trips is to book a boat tour. You can easily find catamarans to take you to Vieques , Culebra , and Icacos . We did a super cool catamaran party boat to Icacos on our last trip!

Vieques Island, Puerto Rico

Vieques is a dream-come-true for families seeking an unspoiled tropical oasis, offering safe, serene beaches that seem almost designed for building sandcastles and creating lifelong memories.

Years ago, Vieques was used as a bombing practice site by the U.S. military. But, it’s slowly being restored to its former glory.

Things to do in Vieques

See the wild horses.

There are SO many wild horses that roam freely all across the island and you won’t have to wait long to see them.

Apparently, most of them actually have owners who take care of them, but they walk around all over the island (including the airport)!

Stroll Around Isabel Segunda

This is the main town in Vieques and is filled with colorful buildings, quaint shops, local art galleries, and a variety of dining options.

One cool thing is to visit the Fortín Conde de Mirasol. It’s the last fort built by the Spanish in the Americas, and now it’s home to a museum and art gallery.

Relax on the Beaches

Vieques is famous for its stunning, secluded beaches. Sun Bay, Navio, Media Luna, and Blue Beach are among the most popular.

Each beach has its unique charm, so try to visit as many as possible.

Go Night Kayaking in Mosquito Bay

If you’re able to spend the night in Vieques, you might want to visit Bioluminescent Bay (aka Mosquito Bay). This is one of the coolest Puerto Rico adventures you should have on your bucket list.

It’s one of the most incredible natural wonders in the world because it’s home to microorganisms that emit a surreal, blue-green glow when disturbed.

Day Trips to Vieques

If you want to plan your own trip to Vieques, it’s easy to take the ferry or a short flight. But, you can also book an excursion from San Juan.

Vieques Snorkeling Tour

If you want to take the stress out of island hopping in Puerto Rico, you can join a boat tour that will pick you up from your hotel on the main island and goes to Vieques.

You won’t actually get to explore the island itself, but you’ll get to do some of the best snorkeling in the world just off the coast of Vieques. Check the latest rates and availability.

Where to Stay

Vieques is a pretty small island and it’s mostly vacation rental homes. There used to be a W Hotel, but it closed after the hurricane and a new hotel is slated to open in 2025.

For a family of four (or 2 couples traveling together), there’s a great house in Esperanza that has a full kitchen and 2 bedrooms. Plus it’s within walking distance of restaurants, bars, a little grocery store, and beaches. Check the latest rates and availability .

Culebra Island, Puerto Rico

Things to do in Culebra

Often listed as one of the world’s best beaches, Flamenco Beach offers white sand, clear turquoise waters, and excellent snorkeling.

There are picnic areas, food kiosks, and camping facilities available, making it an ideal spot for a day-long beach adventure. Personal tip: Just watch out for the sand fleas if you go near the greenery!

Culebrita Island

Accessible by water taxi or kayak, this small, uninhabited island is home to Culebrita Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in the Caribbean.

Enjoy a hike up to the lighthouse for stunning views and spend the rest of your day on the island’s secluded beaches.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Culebra’s clear waters are teeming with marine life, making it a prime destination for snorkeling and diving.

Tamarindo Beach and Carlos Rosario Beach are among the most popular spots. You might even spot turtles, rays, and a myriad of tropical fish.

Gilligan’s island (cayo aurora).

Even though it’s named after the famous 1960s TV show, there’s really no connection. It’s a small mangrove island off the southern coast of Puerto Rico, near the town of Guanica.

With its serene environment, turquoise waters, and abundant marine life, Gilligan’s Island is a perfect getaway for those looking to relax and escape from bustling city life.

If you’re staying in Culebra, it’s really easy to book a water taxi to take you to the small island of Culebrita.

There’s a great swimming beach with turtles, a hike to a lighthouse, a snorkeling beach, and even tidepools.

We did this on our last trip to Culebra and it was about a 30-minute boat ride and they provided beach chairs and umbrellas.

Caracoles Cay

If you’re going with a group of people, you might want to consider this private boat trip . You’ll get to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters of Caracoles Cay and do a bioluminescent swim in Papayo Bay.

Cayos de la Cordillera Nature Reserve

A really fun adventure is to rent a mini boat to head to Cayos de la Cordillera Nature Reserve. The mini boats can hold 1-4 people and you don’t need to have a boating license to do this. Check the latest rates and availability .

Puerto Rico Packing List for Island Hopping

Packing for island hopping in Puerto Rico should be all about comfort, sun protection, and preparing for various water activities.

Here’s a basic list of what you might consider bringing:

If you’re island hopping via boat, you’ll probably want to wear your swimsuit and layer on lightweight clothes (like a swimsuit cover-up or beach dress ).

You might also want to pack a change of clothes, especially if there are restrooms where you get off the boat.

If you are flying, you’ll probably want to wear lightweight clothing as the plane ride can be pretty warm.

Some boat trips have you leave your shoes before you get on board. But for the rest, flip flops (or sandals that can get wet) will be your best friend.

Sun Protection

Puerto Rico is sunny most of the year, so pack plenty of sunscreen (reef-safe is preferred), a wide-brimmed hat , sunglasses , and lip balm with SPF .

I highly suggest reapplying your sunscreen every hour, especially if you go in the water. The sun is STRONG in Puerto Rico!

Accessories

Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, and possibly a waterproof bag to protect your valuables during water activities.

Snorkeling Gear

If you plan on snorkeling and have your own gear , consider bringing it along. Otherwise, you can choose a Puerto Rico boat trip that includes snorkeling gear.

Electronics

If you plan on taking lots of photos or videos, be sure to pack a portable battery pack to keep your phone fully charged.

The prettiest natural pool… a wonderful day of swimming, snorkeling, and connecting with nature and each other.

Gilligan’s Island nicknamed after the popular tv show is one of islands of Puerto Rico you should consider visiting during your vacation, especially if you’re staying on the west coast .   Cayo Aurora, the cay’s formal name, is   a mile off the coast of  Guanica  on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico.  Gilligan’s Island is part of the Biosphere Reserve of Guanica and is managed by the Department of Natural Resources (DRNA).

Few tourists and travelers get to enjoy this relaxing haven, it’s still one of the unbeaten paths of Puerto Rico.  The few lucky ones that do, get to enjoy this island with very few crowds from mid-August until the end of March.  It only gets busy with locals during holiday weekends and summers.

Cayo Aurora is one of the three cays that make up  Cayos de Caña Gorda (Caña Gorda Cays) ;  Cayo Aurora is on the west side,  Isla Ballena on the east side separated from the mainland by a channel of about 65 feet, and Cayo Honda is the cay in between.

When you arrive at the restaurant that offers the ferry ride to Gilligan’s Island, you’ll be greeted with a view of the coastline and colorful boats giving visitors a great photo background.

Great Tours Nearby at La Parguera, Lajas

The bottom is very sandy and you can swim all around the island with little effort, the current is slow and gentle. Gilligan’s is very child-friendly with shallow water, and picnic tables, barbeque pits, and shaded areas for family picnics.  If you have small children, they’ll absolutely love this island and they’ll keep asking you to bring them back.  If you like bird watching, you will see a variety here.

Along the water, you’ll find intimate spots along with mangrove trees perfect for two.  If you want a quiet romantic atmosphere, get here early during weekdays for the best spots and picnic facilities if you need them.  In non-summer months, you may find yourself sharing the island with just a small group of people, perhaps have it to yourselves.

Cayo Aurora is an excellent place to kayak and there are other small islands next to it to explore.

Facilities at Cayo Aurora / Gilligan's Island

• There are composting toilets on the island, bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
• Picnic tables, get here early to claim one.
• Barbecue pits – bring everything you’ll need and be please sure to clean up after using.
• There are trash bins on the island, use them…and that includes bottle caps. If you find the island beautiful please help us keep it that way.

Facts to Know Before you Go

• There is no beach area, the middle of the island is covered in mangrove trees, there is just enough space for a few picnic tables and gazebos.   The small sandy areas are just wide enough to enter and exit the water.  The waters are so shallow that you can bring your lounge chair and place them right on the water under the shade of a mangrove tree or right in the middle of the natural pool.  Floats are great for Cayo Aurora.
• During the low season and on weekdays you’ll mostly have the island to yourself. During the summer months and high tourist season particularly on weekends.  The island is a popular place for locals and tourists so get there early to grab a spot and picnic table.   Locals like to bring music and it can get loud with young crowds in the summer months when kids are off school.
• There are no lifeguards there so you’re on your own, keep an eye on your kids.
• Food –  There are no shops at Gilligan’s Island, so bring a cooler with everything you’ll need.  The restaurant at the ferry sells food and they’ll take your order and bring it to the island if you wish.
• Bring bug spray, the mornings are ok, by 2 pm mosquitos and sand flies start arriving.

Getting to Gilligan's on your Own by Ferry / Water Taxi

Drive to Gilligan’s Island – Guanica

• From San Juan to Gilligan’s Island, Guanica – Take Highway 52 to the town of Ponce. Then head west (now called Porta del Sol) on Road 2 and south on Route 116 to the town of Guanica. Then take Road #333. Following the turn to Copamarina Beach Resort make a right, shortly you’ll see a parking lot on your right, park there and get your tickets.

Ferry / Water Taxi to Gilligan’s Island – Guanica, Puerto Rico

There is a small private passenger ferry (water taxi) that operates from Tuesday to Sunday.  The island is closed for visitors on Mondays, DRNA rules.

• The first trip leaving to Gilligan’s is from 9 am – 10 am (depending on the number of visitors) and the return trip is at 5 pm.   Regularly the ferry makes trips every half hour. Depending on the number of people, they may leave earlier or later.
• The cost is only $9.59 p/p round trip.  Coolers $5.58.
• Before you make the trip to Guanica please call 787-821-4941 for up-to-date rates and hours.  If the weather is not favorable, the ferry will not make the trip.

1. Step back in time in Old San Juan

Spend a couple of days wandering the blue-grey cobblestone streets, buzzing plazas, and UNESCO World Heritage-listed fortifications of Old San Juan: a unique Caribbean city shaped by five centuries of history. Named after their distinctive, uplifting song, which sounds like “Co-Kee! Co-Kee!”, the amphibians inhabited the archipelago long before the indigenous Taíno people immortalized their image in petroglyphs thousands of years ago. The coquí remains a much-loved cultural symbol for Puerto Ricans today, with the little frogs’ image found on everything from pottery to postcards.

6. Catch some waves in Rincón

A laidback town in northwestern Puerto Rico, with over a dozen beaches and some of the best waves in the Caribbean, Rincón has been a surfing mecca since the late 1960s. Experienced surfers can catch a variety of big breaks around the coast, but there are also plenty of surf schools if it’s your first time on a board and you need some tips. At night, the restaurants and bars around the plaza offer plenty of fun for visitors too.

7. Try the mouthwatering mofongo

Drawing on the territory’s Spanish, African, and Taíno history, the favorite Puerto Rican dish of mofongo features a tight mound of mashed green plantains, traditionally served with meat, seafood, or vegetables. Join an adrenaline-fuelled jet ski tour of the coast, then head to Vittata Gastropub at Rompeolas Beach to replenish with a Cachita Daiquiri, made from rum blended with passion fruit, lime, and coconut foam; alongside their excellent El Mofongo Vittata (fried mashed plantain), served with an earthy porcini broth.

8. Explore the only rainforest in the US

A biodiversity hotspot, El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system and is home to sparkling waterfalls and pools, more than 830 native plant species, wildlife including bats, geckos, and anole lizards, and 97 species of bird including hummingbirds and the endangered Puerto Rican parrot.

You’ll also find 13 of the 17 species of coqui frogs here, and plenty of hiking trails through the soaring tabonuco trees, bromeliads, and ferns.

9. Go on a jet ski adventure in Aguadilla

Get a different view of Puerto Rico’s legendary beaches on a jet ski tour along the coastline with Aguadilla Water Sports . The family-run business has a ‘Top Gun’ fleet of yellow Sea Doo jet skis, and fun guides leading the exploration of the northwest coast’s coves and bays. Ride solo or with a buddy on the back, and don’t forget to pair your phone with the on-board Bluetooth speakers, so you can listen to tunes along the way.

10. Catch a coffee tour in San Lorenzo

With a restaurant, café, and resident peacocks nonchalantly strutting their stuff, Hacienda Muñoz is a serene place to spend a couple of hours learning about Puerto Rico’s coffee-producing past. Surrounded by slopes covered with palms and coffee plants, the family-run hacienda is just 30 minutes from San Juan, and a tour takes visitors through the cultivation process to harvesting, sorting, and roasting, ending with a tasting of some of their award-winning specialty blends in the coffee shop.

11. Search for the endangered Puerto Rican parrot

It’s estimated around one million Puerto Rican parrots inhabited the archipelago at the beginning of the sixteenth century, but the arrival of Spanish colonists took its toll and by 1975, just 13 remained. The Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery Plan has helped bring them back from the brink, and despite the devastation caused by Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017, there are now an estimated 250 of these endangered endemic parrots in the forests of Maricao, El Yunque, and Río Abajo.

12. Swim with turtles in Culebra and San Juan

The warm waters around the islands of Puerto Rico are a haven for marine life, including dolphins, manatees, and whales, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities to swim with turtles on the surrounding reefs. On the island of Culebra, guides lead snorkeling tours of the Luis Peña Nature Reserve, where green turtles graze on the seagrass, while Scuba Dogs at Escambrón Marine Park offers snorkeling and diving a stone’s throw from San Juan, with a good chance of seeing turtles.

13. Explore an underground cave system

Beneath Puerto Rico’s lush mountain peaks and forests lies an equally impressive limestone labyrinth. The Río Camuy Cave Park is the third-largest underground river cavern system in the world. Over 10 miles of caverns and 220 caves have been explored and mapped, but experts believe there could be at least 800 caves waiting to be discovered. There are 18 known entrances and visitors can join tours to see stalagmites and stalactites in the 170-feet-high main cave, Clara.

14. Embrace Barbiecore at Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge

Enter a real-life Barbie Land with a visit to the candy-pink salt lakes of the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Puerto Rico. The rosy hue of the pools comes from a combination of algae, salt, bacteria, and water, offering an other-worldly location for an Instagram shoot, before exploring the hiking and biking trails of the 1,800-acre refuge. Nearby, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse sits high on rugged limestone cliffs, offering epic views of the Caribbean Sea.

15. Live the highlife at classy Condado Beach

Close to the airport, San Juan’s upscale oceanfront district has all you’ll need for a luxe stay, with elegant hotels, beachside restaurants, and big-brand boutiques, plus a long stretch of sand. 17. Enjoy a tropical escape in Vieques

Home to a wildlife refuge, the laidback, beautiful isle of Vieques is easily reached by tour boat or ferry from Puerto Rico’s main island. With the world’s brightest body of bioluminescent water at Mosquito Bay, a herd of Spanish Paso Fino horses roaming free, secluded sandy beaches and some of the best snorkeling spots in the territory, Vieques can also be accessed by plane from San Juan and offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury villas to guesthouses.

18. Ride a horse along the beach in Isabela

The dream of horse riding along a windswept beach is a reality in Puerto Rico. 19. See ancient indigenous rock art in Arecibo

When Christopher Columbus sailed into Puerto Rico in 1493 on his second voyage to the Indies, the islands were home to the indigenous Taíno people, and some of their ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings) can still be seen around the island today. One of the most famous spots to view them is the dramatic Cueva del Indio in Arecibo on the Atlantic coast, an hour west of San Juan, which has one of the highest numbers of these culturally significant artworks.

The ferry operates 7 days a week.  On average the ferry runs every 30 minutes.  During holiday hours schedule may change, please inquire in advance at the ferry ticket booth.

Please Note:   If you plan on using the ferry, we advise you to make a quick stop at the booth hours before your intended ferry ride to confirm the ferry is running and to purchase your ticket in advance.   The ferry is small and during rush hours it can get full with locals commuting.

2. SNORKELING IN PARADISE

Melones & Tamarin do Beach is located on the west coast of Culebra. Upon arrival, our guide will give you complete pre-ride instructions.

Enjoy the breathtaking views along the way: inside and outside of the water!

Snorkeling destination will depend on Rip Currents Conditions.

You will experience a 1-hour Guided Snorkeling Tour.

Chance to swim with sea turtles, sting rays, and vibrant marine life.

3. EXPERIENCE FLAMENCO BEACH! 

Flamenco Beach. Ranked as the second most beautiful beach in the world, no one should ever leave Culebra without visiting Flamenco!

You will be free to enjoy this unique place, beach chairs provided. Have lunch at one of the local food kiosks at the beach. Later, we will take you back to the ferry terminal. There, you will take the trip back to Ceiba Ferry Terminal, while enjoying the views of Puerto Rico’s eastern coast at sunset.

4. FERRY RIDE BACK TO CEIBA

After a full day on Culebra Island, we will take a Ferry ride back to Ceiba.

The travel time of the ferry back to Ceiba is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The ferry arrives at 7:00 pm at Ceiba.

We do not provide private maritime transportation to culebra. the tickets included in our culebra ferry package are for the public ferry. the puerto rico maritime transportation authority (prmta) operates this ferry. we are not affiliated with the prmta. therefore, we are not responsible nor can control the ferry schedule in any way., i ventures promotes a 9:30 am departure from ceiba to culebra, in the event we receive tickets for a later departure you will be notified in advance and/or on-site. your group will be offered the option to confirm an excursion with a later departure, reschedule to another day, reschedule to another excursion, or cancel with a full refund. .

For this reason, we must be at the Ceiba Ferry Terminal at check-in time. Otherwise, you may miss the ferry. In that case, you will not be able to get to Culebra on time for the tour. Finally, the excursion start time is subject to the arrival time of the ferry to Culebra.

Caja de Muerto Island

“Caja de Muerto” Island (Coffin Island) is located in southern Puerto Rico off the coast of Ponce (only 8 miles away). This island is only 1/2 mile in width (at the widest part) and 1 1/2 miles in length. It offers many things such as a lighthouse, an old hidden pirate cave, a few hiking trails, and gorgeous beaches. The whole island is also a well-protected natural reserve. Many believe that it got its name because it resembles someone lying down as in a coffin when seen from a distance. Others believe its name derives from a legendary coffin found inside the island’s cave.

Old Lighthouse

The hiking trails on the island take you among other places to the old lighthouse, which has a wonderful platform for a perfect view of the island. This platform is located right on top of the Almeida Cave. You cannot go inside the lighthouse, but the trek to the platform is well worth the view.

The Legend and the Cave

The legend that surrounds this island has to do with a pirate named José Almeida. He once fell in love with a Basque lady when he visited Curaçao. He married her and took her to sea, where she, sadly, was killed. He buried her in the cave mentioned above and visited her each year to leave some of his new treasure with her. When her coffin was found many years later, the island became known as Coffin Island.

The Beaches

The beaches on this island are idyllic. Pelican Beach has the designation of a Blue Flag Beach. These beaches have particularly high standards and are concerned about hygiene, conservation, and amenities. They are guaranteed to be administered in a way that is safe and environmentally conscious.

Some of the beaches located on the eastern side of the island are blocked off from the public when giant turtles are nesting. These beaches are not ideal to swim at for the most part because of the rough seas.

This island offers no fresh drinking water, so travelers are encouraged to bring their own water, food, and beach gear for their visit.

“Caja de Muerto” Tour

Tours departing for Caja de Muertos started again on November 26, 2023. The island had been closed due to Covid and past earthquakes for a few years. There are currently two companies approved by the Tourism Office of Ponce that conducts tours to Caja de Muertos from La Guancha, Ponce. These are:

While on the island, there are numerous optional activities, such as: enjoy the beautiful scenery, spend time at the beach, and/or go on a walking tour or hike. You may also visit an old lighthouse from 1887, tour the legendary cave, and stop by the island’s tiny flora and fauna educational open-air museum. During your beach time, some companies may allow you to use a kayak and/or a paddleboard.

Make sure your company has the necessary permits to enter the island. Caja de Muertos Island is a very secluded natural treasure visited by few travelers and ready to amaze you.

American tourist dies, U.S. Marine missing in separate incidents off Puerto Rico coast

The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it is searching for a U.S. Marine who went swimming in high surf off Puerto Rico's northeast coast while on vacation, while another American tourist died in a separate incident in the dangerous surf.

Officials identified the missing Marine as 26-year-old Samuel Wanjiru from Massachusetts and said he was visiting the island with his family. He went missing Wednesday afternoon after going into the water at La Pared beach in Luquillo. Video posted on social media by Puerto Rico's Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration showed divers jump from a helicopter in search for the man.

Also on Wednesday, another American tourist died in northwest Puerto Rico after authorities said he rescued his teenage children who had been swept away by heavy surf.

"This month has been deadly when it comes to beach drownings in the area of Puerto Rico," said Capt. Jose E. Díaz, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan. "People need to realize that the situation is serious enough to limit our ability to respond to search and rescue cases with surface vessels without further endangering our crews and assets. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones to the sea, we hope they find strength during this most difficult time." 

A high surf advisory was issued late Tuesday for Puerto Rico's northwest, north and northeast coasts and will remain in effect until late Thursday, with waves of up to 12 feet (4 meters).

Díaz noted that most open ocean beaches in Puerto Rico do not have lifeguards.

Dredging of Puerto Rico's biggest port begins despite warnings it may harm turtles and corals

SAN JUAN – A $62 million project to dredge Puerto Rico’s biggest and most important seaport began Wednesday amid fierce opposition from environmentalists and a pending lawsuit.

Crews with California-based Curtin Maritime will remove nearly 3 million cubic yards (76 million cubic feet) of marine floor to open the San Juan Bay to larger vessels including tankers that will serve a new liquid natural gas terminal on Puerto Rico’s north coast.

The dredged material will be deposited into the Atlantic Ocean 2 nautical miles (4 kilometers) north of the U.S. territory in a move approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, officials said.

Gov. Pedro Pierluisi said the project overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to give a $400 million boost to the local economy, adding that the dredging will be completed by October.

He dismissed concerns by environmentalists who have said the project would endanger wildlife and humans. “This already was authorized at all federal levels, including any environmental impact it might have,” he said.

In August 2022, the Arizona-based nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. government, saying the project threatens to destroy corals and seagrass beds and suck up turtles and other marine life.

The lawsuit is pending at a U.S. District Court in Washington, with a hearing last held in January.

“We are hoping for a decision soon,” Catherine Kilduff, an attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a phone interview.

“The dredging itself causes sediment that can kill corals,” she said. “Those corals have been impacted by diseases and warming waters, and so we’re worried that this dredging project…could be a death knell.”

Kilduff said the center also is concerned about manatees that swim in the San Juan Bay, where they depend on seagrass for food and are struck by ships.

She said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last dredged the bay in the early 2000s, promising they would plant an acre of seagrass.

“They still haven’t done that,” she said.

Kilduff noted that the federal government held a public comment period on the dredging project when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm in 2017, leaving the island without power or passable roads.

A USACE spokesperson did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

As the governor shared details about the project on Wednesday, a dredging vessel began operations in the background.

Officials said it would dig up to 46 feet (14 meters), with some areas in the San Juan Bay currently at depths ranging from 36 feet (11 meters) to 42 feet (13 meters).

“San Juan harbor is an economic engine and vital lifeline for Puerto Rico,” U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Col. Charles Decker said in the announcement. “It’s a phenomenal investment in the future of Puerto Rico.”

The Corps is investing almost $45 million in the project, with the government of Puerto Rico providing the rest.
