Understanding Visa Requirements for Cruising

Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • September 11, 2018

Do I need a Visa to cruise? It’s a common question when traveling internationally. You might wonder which documentation you need to enter and depart foreign countries. Many people are unaware that some countries require a visitor or tourist Visa and a passport when visiting.

Stunning view of Lindquist Beach on Saint Thomas

Visitor visas often involve an application process along with additional fees. When you are going on a cruise , this should be factored into your plans. Sometimes, the rules are different, which can further complicate the process. The first step that you need to take is to research the rules.

We have gathered the basic information that you will need to help you determine whether you need a visa for your cruise and how to apply for a visa.

Do I need a Visa to cruise now?

It depends. You will not need a visa if you are a North American visiting a popular cruise destination like the western or eastern Caribbean, the western Mediterranean, or Alaska . Ships that visit other exotic destinations may require a visa for entry . Additionally, certain locations require independent travelers to have a visa, while those traveling on a cruise ship are not required to have a visa.

How do you know which countries require a visa? You may think you can call the cruise line; however, they may not be helpful. Many cruise lines will have the information posted on their website. Check your cruise documents to help you determine if you need a visa for your cruise.

If you read the fine print, you will see that the cruise line indicates that it is not their responsibility to provide passengers with visa information, even if it is posted on their website. Essentially, cruise ships give tips but acknowledge that you are responsible for obtaining information about whether you need a visa.

Make sure you verify if it is necessary to obtain a visa long before the departure of your cruise. You can find visa requirements at Travel.State.gov if you are a U.S. citizen , under the tab “International Travel.”

Begin by searching the country or countries you will visit on your cruise. The visa requirements are under “Quick Facts” at the top of the page. Scroll further and check out the Entry, Exit, and Visa Requirements. This will provide you with details, including information for cruise passengers. If you are a Canadian citizen, visit Travel.gc.ca for similar information.

You must obtain a valid visa for each port that requires a visa, even if you are not planning on disembarking. Emergencies, either the ship’s or your own, can create a situation that could make a visa unexpectedly necessary.

How Do You Obtain a Cruise Visa?

Once you have determined that you need one or more visas for your cruise, you must work on obtaining them. The cruise line will only help passengers obtain visas in a few countries before the cruise line’s arrival. You can find more information about this by visiting the cruise line’s website and searching for the country’s name and visa, or you can contact the cruise line directly for more information.

There are two main ways to get a visa. You can apply directly with the country you visit through the consulate or a third-party service. The United States government and Canadian government websites have links to direct you to the appropriate websites for applying for visas. You can also ask your travel agent to help with the application process.

Tips for Obtaining a Cruise Visa

1. read all the information.

You can save time and trouble by reading the information on the cruise line’s website about the ports you will visit on your cruise. Then, visit your home country’s website for more information about visa requirements. Putting all of this information together will help you have a clear understanding of the rules and visa regulations for those who are cruising.

Russia is an example of a country that offers exceptions to visas for cruise passengers. You can find detailed information about visiting Russia on the State Department’s page, including a link to the visa application. In the first paragraph, you will see that Russia strictly enforces immigration and visa laws. When you read that stern admonition, you may be tempted to click the link and begin filling out the visa application on the Russian site; however, if you continue to read, you will see those cruise passengers who are staying less than 72 hours in either St. Petersburg or Vladivostok are not required to have a visa if a licensed tour operator accompanies them . If you will be touring with a cruise ship or a licensed guide, you are not required to have a tourist visa. If you plan on exploring the country alone , you will need a visa.

2. Talk With Your Travel Agent

A  good travel agent will have experience booking and traveling on cruise ships, which means they will have the information needed to determine which countries require a Visa, the average cost of obtaining a visa, and how to apply for those required visas. Some travel agents can also help you get a visa for a fee.

3. Compare Services

You can use a commercial visa; however, never do so without checking the official country’s website. This will help you determine if you should apply for a visa or use a commercial visa service. You can also find the cost of obtaining a visa through the country’s consulate versus a third-party Visa service.

One example is Brazil. Applying for a tourist visa to Brazil can be challenging; therefore, a visa service is recommended. Additionally, U.S. citizens can now apply for an e-visa, which helps to simplify the application process. The fees associated with using a consulate are often half the cost of using a visa service.

4. Plan Ahead

Most visas for cruises can be obtained relatively quickly (often in less than a week); however, you should begin your visa application as soon as you book your cruise. Some countries have photo requirements, even for e-visas. Other countries will only send their visas through the mail. To avoid fast expedited services and excess fees, you should begin researching and applying for the necessary visas right after you book your cruise.

princess world cruise visa requirements

Passport books are required for all travelers, including citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the U.S. by air, land or sea .

There are a few notable exceptions pertaining to land and sea border crossings:

  • U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.

A valid passport book is required  for all international Princess itineraries including:

  • Australia & New Zealand
  • Central and South America
  • Panama Canal (partial and full transit)
  • Caribbean (any sailings that visit Martinique or Guadeloupe)
  • South Pacific & Tahiti
  • World Cruises

On select U.S. roundtrip (sometimes called “closed-loop”) voyages, U.S. citizens ages 16 and above may also travel with an original or certified copy U.S. birth certificate (or U.S. Certificate of Naturalization if foreign born) presented together with a valid U.S. government-issued photo identification. U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 15 and younger may travel with a birth certificate.

  • Alaska roundtrip from San Francisco, Los Angeles or Seattle (roundtrip Seattle cruisetours excluded)
  • Canada/New England roundtrip from New York
  • Caribbean roundtrip from Ft. Lauderdale^, Galveston^ or New York (voyages that do  not  call to Martinque or Guadeloupe only)
  • Hawaii roundtrip from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, or Seattle
  • Mexico roundtrip from Los Angeles, San Francisco or San Diego

^Voyages that call to Central or South America are excluded and only passports are accepted. All voyages that call to Martinique or Guadeloupe require a passport.

  • When minors are traveling with only one adult, Princess requires that all passengers have a valid passport.
  • A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea from Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico or within the United States. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Vacations To Go has partnered with CIBT, the largest and most well-established travel visa and passport company in the world, to offer you a fast, easy and reliable way to obtain a passport or other document for travel anywhere in the world. For information about obtaining a passport or passport card for the first time, or about renewing a passport or passport card, click here to visit the CIBT Web site.

Legal U.S. Residents (Non-Citizens)

Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must have a valid passport from their country of citizenship and a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) to enter or re-enter the U.S.

Non-U.S., Non-Canada Citizens

The following countries participate in a visa waiver program with the U.S., and citizens of these countries must have a machine-readable passport for entry into the U.S.:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

Citizens of the countries listed above who do not possess machine-readable passports, and citizens of countries not listed above must present a valid passport and a valid United States visa upon entry into the U.S. For those whose travel plans include multiple entries into the U.S., such as a cruise that begins and ends in a U.S. port, a multiple-entry visa is required.

All travelers, including U.S. and Canada citizens , are responsible for verifying visa requirements with consular officials, and obtaining visas where required, for every country visited during their trip, including countries visited via connecting flights.

Always check with your Vacations To Go cruise counselor at the time of booking to verify the documentation requirements for your vacation.

Visa Requirements

Cool Cruiser

Ok, now I'm confused. DW and I are booked on Med cruise on the Royal this September. We are both US passport holders. Today I get an email advising us of visa requirements and multiple entry visa requirements for Schengen and non Schengen countries. I didn't think any visa requirements applied to US passport holders, but the wording in the email was a bit confusing. My question is, do we need to be concerned about visas or not? Since we're less than 90 days until sail away, if visas are necessary I need to get busy policing them up.

Thanks, Don

For the Med, your US passport is good, no visas required. Enjoy your cruise, the Med is awesome!

Hope this link will help https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/go/schengen-fact-sheet.html

You say the area you would be visiting would be the Med. OK a lot of the countries would be covered by schengen but if you are going to say Turkey or Israel then use your search engine to check it out. Enjoy.:)

We have never had to get a visa for the Med. Our US passports were all we needed

10,000+ Club

Read the information carefully again. I think you will find that no visas are required for U.S. Passport holders.

Just finished 21days on the Med including turkey, you do not need a visa except to charge your purchases. Oh that's a different kind of Visa. LOL.

When we cruised in the Med, we were not responsible for any visas. Princess took care of getting short term visas for Turkey, maybe Egypt as well. We were given a 'ticket stub' that we had to keep in our possession (could have been asked to produce it at any time), and then turn back in when we returned to the ship. Extremely easy.

We got the same email. As noted earlier by sknight this does not apply to US passport holders. See bolded part below:

As a reminder, you will be visiting countries which are member of the Schengen Agreement. Schengen Agreement countries require passport holders from various countries to obtain a visa in advance. This requirement does not apply to Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, UK, or U.S. passport holders. A multiple entry visa will be required if a non-Schengen country is visited between visits to Schengen countries (Example: depart from Italy, visit Turkey, arrive in Greece). Schengen Agreement countries include: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Thanks all! I appreciate your responses!

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.
