If golf is your game, New South Wales has some sweet spots for golf getaways, from wine country to the mighty Murray , from the Blue Mountains to the Southern Highlands . The good news is that just because your round ends, doesn’t mean your holiday has to — many of the state’s most scenic courses come with (or are in easy reach of) extremely comfortable accommodation with all the trimmings. So tee off, then check in, at these seven stay-and-play courses around NSW.
Bonville Golf Resort, Coffs Coast
Located a five-hour drive north on Sydney on the Coffs Coast, Bonville Golf Resort deserves its reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful courses. The 18-hole, par-72 championship course is hemmed by soaring gum trees (look out for koalas and black cockatoos), its secluded fairways dipping and rising over the countryside. Finished your round? Check in to one of the 30 contemporary rooms, take a dip in the lagoon-style pool, stroll through the rainforest or dine on-site at the Flooded Gums Restaurant.
Gibraltar Country Club, Southern Highlands
The 18-hole, par-69 course at Gibraltar Country Club is like a slice of the Southern Highlands, its setting just outside Bowral (115km southwest of Sydney) offering postcard-worthy views over the town and Mount Gibraltar. Fairways are lined with mature native and European trees, with holes providing surprises and challenges for golfers of all experience levels. The 76 rooms in the on-site hotel overlook course lakes and forest — some come with living areas, and all feature large marbled bathrooms. There’s no need to leave, thanks to the bar, restaurant and spa. Also in Bowral is Peppers Craigieburn Bowral , which has its own short but challenging nine-hole course.
Howlong Golf Resort, Murray River
The Murray region has its fair share of golf courses. Highly rated for its relaxed country swagger is Howlong Golf Resort , its namesake town located right on the river that acts as NSW’s southern border. The 18-hole, par-70 course is compact but challenging, with flat, firm greens enveloped by Australian forest — it’s particularly pretty in spring when the bush begins to bloom. Spacious rooms come with plenty of colour, and are complemented by non-golf diversions including a saltwater pool, sauna, kids’ playground and tennis court.
Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club, Central Coast
A 90-minute drive north of Sydney, tucked between the Pacific Ocean and Tuggerah Lake on the Central Coast, the 18-hole, par-72 Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club is one of Australia’s great links courses, its manicured greens spread along the coastline, with many holes offering water views. It’s a private club, but guests of the on-course Pullman Magenta Shores Resort Hotel are permitted to play — reason alone to check in. When you’re not teeing off, unwind in one- to three-bedroom villas, dive into the pools or bliss out in the spa.
The Lakes, Sydney
A regular host of the Emirates Australian Open, The Lakes is one of the state’s most preeminent private golf clubs. The 18-hole, par-72 course is split by the airport-to-city freeway, with natural water hazards, rolling dunes and seaside winds all part of the challenges of play. There’s no dedicated on-site accommodation, but it’s just a 10-minute drive to the funky Citadines Connect hotel at Sydney airport, which comes replete with views over runways (not fairways) as well as a rooftop cinema.
The Vintage Golf Club, Hunter Valley
Golfing legend Greg Norman designed the 18-hole, par-71 course at The Vintage Golf Club , surrounded by vineyards in one of the state’s premier wine regions. Set 250km north of Sydney in the Hunter Valley, the superbly manicured, well-bunkered greens come with plenty of challenges, including unexpected water hazards; there’s a driving range and golf pro on call, should you wish to fine-tune your game. Don’t spend all your time on the course — the on-site Château Élan at The Vintage hotel offers an indulgent country escape, its luxuriously appointed villas just a few steps from the day spa and lauded restaurant.
Leura Golf Club, Blue Mountains
With dramatic sandstone escarpments and deep valleys, the Blue Mountains is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, whether hikers, bikers or golfers. It’s here, just 100km west of Sydney, you’ll find the Fairmont Resort & Spa Blue Mountains , MGallery by Sofitel, its resort-style rooms overlooking the Jamison Valley and expansive hotel facilities, including a maze, pool, multiple restaurants, spa and cinema. Many check in here for easy access to neighbouring Leura Golf Club , the 18-hole, par-69 course the oldest of its kind in the region. Look forward to undulating greens with panoramic vistas over the World Heritage-listed national park — much the same outlook is enjoyed from the 19th hole (the clubhouse bistro).

Sierra Escape, Piambong Credit: Destination NSW
Couple enjoying a morning coffee from their luxury glamping tent at Sierra Escape, Piambong near Mudgee.
#feelnsw #newsouthwales
Make your downtime as memorable as your gastronomic experiences in the Mudgee wine region, a 3.5-hour drive or 45-minute flight from Sydney , by choosing one of these unique places to stay. Nest in repurposed heritage buildings in the pretty namesake town, pamper yourself with a luxury escape, or relax at a winery stay in the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Lap up subtle luxury
After a glorious day of wine tastings, retreat to the urban oasis of Perry Street Hotel , in the heart of town, to recharge before a night of more gourmet reveries. Revitalise with a soak in the bathtub in your suite in the beautifully renovated 19th-century Mechanics Institute building and feel yourself unwind amid the serene and textured interiors.
After a great night’s sleep, take the five-minute drive to The Cellar by Gilbert , where you’ll be inspired by the passion of fifth-generation winemaker Simon Gilbert and his son Will to create beautifully crafted modern wines with a nod to their heritage. Book ahead to indulge in a wine flight in the elegant tasting room or settle in for a leisurely afternoon in the backyard with some tasty snacks.
Travel back in time
Soak up the atmosphere in the centre of town at the 160-year-old Cobb & Co Court Boutique Hotel , a surviving treasure from Mudgee’s early settlement. Picture the arrival of a stagecoach as you glance down from your balcony at the cobbled courtyard, before admiring the vintage fixtures adorning your room. Cobb & Co is mere steps away from some of the town’s excellent dining options, from breakfast pastries at Market Street Café to dinner at Eltons wine bar.
Rest up in a worker’s cottage
Imagine town life in the late 1850s at The Tannery , a two-bedroom bungalow in the heart of Mudgee. The early Victorian home retains much of the natural charm of its former life as cosy accommodation for local workers. Stoke the open fire, take a seat on the back verandah with a cup of tea and admire the garden, or head straight to Alby & Esthers to mingle with locals over breakfast. Tucked down a laneway in a welcoming courtyard, this popular cafe is renowned for its tasty jaffles.
Hide away in a vineyard
Rekindle your romance just steps away from a cellar door in the quaint two-bedroom Winemaker’s Cottage , which was the Burnbrae winemaking family’s home in the 1960s and has been carefully restored in country minimalist style. Revel in the peaceful surroundings with your loved one before strolling over to the Burnbrae Wines cellar door to maintain the magical spell with the winery’s storybook-inspired labels and glorious blends. Vinestay by Yeats Wines is another local accommodation, set among the Yeates Wines vines.
Take over a big country home
Reconnect with family and friends in the comfort of a renovated 1916 stone house at Leaning Oak , on the fringes of Mudgee. The restoration has stayed true to the soul of the building while adding modern luxury across four bedrooms and a study sleeping up to 12 guests. Kids will love the outdoor saltwater pool and pizza oven, while creative cooks will adore the large French-style kitchen of this authentic country home – time your visit with the Mudgee Farmers’ Market to stock up on fresh produce.
Combine luxury with a farm stay
Light the wood fire and snuggle up in a welcoming cottage with stylish interiors and local art on the walls or step out of your oversized homestead to meet fellow travellers around communal fire pits at Peppertree Hill , a collection of self-contained luxury accommodation options on the outskirts of Mudgee.
You won’t have to travel far to feast on seasonal local dishes. At nearby Pipeclay Pumphouse , on the estate of family-run Robert Stein Vineyard & Farm , treat yourself to a delicious lunch or dinner that places local meat, herbs and vegetables front and centre.
Indulge in an ultra-glamping experience
Lose yourself in the views of rolling hills deep in Mudgee wine country at the adults-only Sierra Escape , a breathtaking property on 280 acres with five-star tents to help you escape from the world for a while. Soak up the serenity in your glamping hut’s freestanding bathtub and be sure to order a local meats and cheese platter ahead of your booking – it’ll be waiting for you in your tent when you arrive.
Savour a five-star country estate
Celebrate your big family event — a wedding, perhaps? — at Evanslea , located along the Cudgegong River. Surround yourself with pretty, landscaped gardens as you gather your favourite people in a four-bedroom house with a shared swimming pool and fire pit. Or hide away from the world in one of Evanslea’s romantic cottages, after picking up some organic and biodynamic wine and delicious takeaway platters from the nearby Lowe Family Wine Co.
Take your time heading home
On your way back to Sydney, stop in at the heritage village of Rylstone , a 45-minute drive east of Mudgee, to feast on dumplings and sip Chinese tea at 29 Nine 99 yum cha restaurant, or taste French-style wines at De Beaurepaire Wines while soaking up sweeping vineyard views. Linger at The Little Lady at Naked Lady Wines , an minimalist tiny cabin for two on a boutique vineyard, or gather a group of friends for a memory-making reunion at Wollemi Retreat , a thoughtfully designed haven that sleeps up to 10 in luxury across a house and two cabins.

An expert’s guide to golf in NSW
With more than 350 courses dotted across the state, there are plenty of places to tee off in nsw. if you’ve never played before and are looking for some tips or you’re in search of your new favourite course, our expert’s guide has you covered..
Tahnia Ravnjak
Professional golfer Tahnia Ravnjak grew up in Wollongong and has been playing on the world’s best golf courses since her teens. A WPGA tournament winner, she played in her first Australian Open in 2020. Here, she shares her expert advice and favourite courses in NSW.
What NSW courses do you recommend for a first-time golfer?
If you have never played golf before but are keen to have a go, I would recommend Bondi Golf Club . It is a short nine-hole course with straight forward holes, has amazing views and it won’t break the bank. Bondi Golf Club is a great place to start when you’re getting into the game, because it won’t take hours to play – which can be daunting for some.
North Bondi Golf and Diggers Club
Russell Vale Golf Club , just north of Wollongong, is also a great place to start. It is predominantly a Par 3 course, which makes it beginner-friendly, and it’s publicly owned by the council so is open to anyone. Plus the views are great!
Which NSW course would be a worthy challenge for an experienced golfer?
Bonville Golf Resort puts you to the test in every way possible. There are a number of different types of shots you are required to hit to give yourself the best chance. The holes are unique and there are plenty of opportunities for risk/reward shots.
Magenta Shores Golf and Country Club, Magenta in the Central Coast
Magenta Shores on the Central Coast is also a great challenge, especially when the wind gets up. It will test your shot shaping skills into tight pins.
Do you have a favourite course in NSW?
My favourite courses in NSW are The Australian in Sydney, Bonville Golf Club and Port Kembla Golf Club .
The Australian Golf Course
What resorts or hotels do you recommend where I can stay and play?
Definitely Duntryleague Golf Club in Orange or Bonville Golf Club outside Coffs Harbour. Both have accommodation on site, the facilities are great and there’s lots of sightseeing in the area, making them great options for a weekend away.
Duntryleague Golf Club in Orange, Country NSW
I also like Rydges Resort Hunter Valley , which is home to the Hunter Valley Golf Club . It’s a great golf course with accommodation on the grounds, good dining options in golf club, and plenty of wineries and activities in the area.
Which region has the best courses if I want to plan a golf trip?
The Central Coast is a great place to visit to play some awesome golf with 10 courses close together. Magenta Shores would have to be one of the toughest golf courses I’ve played – especially when the wind gets up… And make sure you bring lots of golf balls. Kooindah Waters is just a short drive from Magenta and is also a great course to play. Wyong, Shelly Beach, Tuggerah Lakes and Toukley are all great places to enjoy a round with your friends.
Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club, Magenta
Do I need to be a member of a club to play?
It depends. For private 'members only' clubs - you can only play there if you are a member or as a guest of a member. But there are plenty of public courses all around NSW where you you don’t need to be a member to play a social round of golf. Check the website or give them a call before you go.
Do I need to buy my own equipment or can I hire it?
You don’t need to have your own gear; you can hire golf clubs and even golf buggies from the pro shop when you arrive. You will need to buy golf balls and maybe a few tees, but everything you need to set out for your round can be organised through the pro shop.
Hunter Valley Golf and Country Club Pokolbin , Hunter Valley
I’m new to golf – are there any unspoken rules or special phrases that I need to know?
- Always call the pro shop to book in before you go, don’t just turn up. There could be a competition on that day or the course could be booked out and you won’t be able to get a game.
- Golf etiquette is important – respect the players in your group, especially if you don’t know them, and don’t talk when they are taking their shot (though a bit of banter among friends is fine).
- Be careful where you are walking on the green – you don’t want to step on the “line” of someone’s putt.
- When you are teeing off, make sure you don’t tee up your ball in front of the tee markers.
- If you hit your shot “on the dance floor” that means you have hit it onto the green.
- Playing “army golf” is when you hit the ball all over the course, going left, right, left and into the trees.
- “Birdie” means your score is one shot less than par (eg: scoring 3 on a Par 4).
- “Fix your divot” – when you hit a shot and take a clump of grass with it, you need to repair it with sand. You should always carry a small sand bucket, which are available at the golf club
- "FORE" – this is what you shout if it looks like your ball might hit someone. Or if you're playing and you hear someone shout "fore", it might be a good idea to put your arms over your head and check that there aren't any golf balls flying in your direction!

The door lock of the bathroom was malfunction and eventually taken away. The air con is in good working condition and very quiet. The staff was friendly and helpful. The motel is in a quiet area but just next to a beautiful golf course, we enjoyed a beautiful lunch in the golf club.

NSW Hunter Valley & Central Coast Golf Holidays
The drive to the NSW Central Coast and 2 of Australia's Top 100 Golf Courses - Magenta Shores Golf & Country Club and Kooindah Waters Golf Club - is only about 1 ½ hours from Sydney's CBD, but as they are both adjoined by luxury resorts, you'll feel like you're a world away from the city's hustle & bustle!
Just a short 1 hour drive further north, is the highly-respected Newcastle Golf Club - a private top tier course that you will never hear a bad word spoken about. Pair this with a game at a modern classic, Pacific Dunes, and you’ve got a great stopover before heading West in to the Hunter Valley for yet more golfing delights!
The Hunter Valley is that enticing mix of great golf and great wine! Surrounded by some of the regions best wineries, you will find The Vintage Golf Club, Cypress Lakes Golf & Country Club and Hunter Valley Golf Club which all offer quality golf in unique surroundings, with many holes playing right alongside the vines. A winery tour in the region is a must-do, and is something we would be happy to help organise for you.
Any of these NSW golf locations can be booked as a standalone trip or you can take a bit of extra time and combine two or three destinations to create an unforgettable golf road-trip.
Following are a few suggested itineraries for your next Hunter Valley and New South Wales coastal golf holiday. These are unescorted, private travel packages and can be booked for any time of year based on availability.
Please note that we specialise in groups of 8 and above, so the prices below are based on 8 people travelling together, however if your group is larger than 8, we can tailor a package to suit.
Kindly note that these are indicative starting prices only. Prices may be higher depending on the time of year you wish to travel, and when hotels increase their prices due to high occupancy levels at busy times of year.
Generally, flights are not included however we can certainly include flights with your booking, should you wish, once we know where you are travelling from.
If you don't find exactly what you want here, please let us know by giving us a call on (02) 9555 5311, or email us here and we can provide a custom quote to suit.

“ Wa rren organised a great golf weekend a way for the Lost Boys Social Golf Club. The courses (Hilltop, Gerringong and Shoalhaven Heads) were in great condition, the weather was good and the club staff looked after us. Warren also organised accomodation at Quest Nowra. This accomodation was very good. Warren dealt with all the little adjustments that dealing with a bunch of old blokes may require. A great weekend away. Thanks very much Warren.” – Ken Wiggins, Lost Boys Social Golf Group
Warren at Classic Capital Golf Tours pulled together a great weekend Illawarra golf package for our weekend away. The golf courses; Port Kembla and Links Shell Cove, were fantastic and accomodating courses to play and the accomodation; Belmore Apartments Hotel in Wollongong, was a great place to stay. Warren was respectful and patient in dealing with our ever-changing requests and made the whole weekend feel so easy, we barely had to lift a finger, just show-up, play and stay! We look forward to booking our next golf trip with Classic Capital Golf Tours.- Jimmy Braithwaite, Melbourne

Nelson Bay Golf Tours
Nelson Bay Golf Club is located near the CBD of Nelson Bay and stunning waterways of Port Stephens just 40 minutes north of Newcastle and 2.5hrs north of Sydney. It is an impressive 27 hole golf course on 175 acres of challenging tree lined fairways. It is an idyllic setting and home to kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, native birds and the occasional goanna.
The course is maintained to an extremely high standard to showcase its beauty and challenging layout. The variable tee positions and undulating holes will test the keenest of golfers.
With demanding par 3’s, daring par 4’s and long par 5’s that can out drive the strongest of “grip it & rippers”; the 22nd is particularly challenging at 535m. The serene lakes and deceiving bunkers make the 13th and 14th holes pretty to watch but can be a punishment if not navigated well. Our most picturesque hole, the 18th is surrounded by blooming Christmas bush in the summer months and if there is a hole that could make anyone’s day with a hole in one it would be the 20th. It’s a hold your breath tee shot straight down a tree lined hill to a green at the base of it.
With no traffic noise, the only distractions to your day will be the occasional bird call or native audience.
Accommodation:
2 nights 2 rounds from $340pp
2 nights 3 rounds from $420pp

Course Review : NSW Golf Club
When Australian golf destinations are ranked, New South Wales often does not get the plaudits of the likes of Melbourne and now Tasmania. But more reviewers in the know do agree that the New South Wales Golf Club is the one shining light positioned at the very end of the La Perouse peninsula. I, for one, can testify that no course I have played called for more imagination off the tee!
In a minute …
Alistair McKenzie ( Augusta anyone ? ) designed New South Wales Golf Club and opened it in 1926. Like many of Australia and New Zealand’s best courses, New South Wales is not truly public but allows for a small number of visitors during select midweek slots. Men must be below a 27 handicap and females a 36. It’s not an easy course, and the wind can blow! The course will often rank in the top 50 worldwide and sometimes even in the top 10 outside the USA.
First impressions …
In two words, classically elegant. The day I visited NSW with my friend Justin we took a public bus to the course. It would be fair to assume not that many people probably arrive in that manner ( side note: during the bus ride, I was dealing with a pregnancy scare with my then-new girlfriend who has since become my wife whom I have two lovely children with …. so my mind was in other places )
The benefit of walking into the course was that we got to savor the visual feast bestowed upon us fully. The clubhouse is positioned at the top of the course, with the holes falling away down to the sea below. You certainly get a feel for everything you are about to attack.
My other lasting memory was needing to buy socks in the pro shop as the set I had on that day was too short. That may give you an impression of what you are dealing with at NSW. Amazing golf but traditional in a word.
There were three main takeaways from my round at NSW
- I dont recall ever having so many blind tee shots in a round. Creativity and trust is a must and as a player that struggles with visualising shots full stop it was even tougher to trust so many blind shots.
- NSW can be a brute. The wind blew the day we played. I would estimate that a 5-7 shot wind would not be uncommon for the course
- As per every other McKenzie course I have been lucky to play every club and shot in your bag is tested. All four par threes at NSW face different directions as an example so you never really get into a comfortable groove.
The course is immaculately maintained as you would expect, and it plays hard and fast. Given the slopes over the property, there were a few balls that ended up a long way from where they first landed,
The holes down by the water are something special. Hole 5 is when you first get a close-up look at the sea. If you can drive the ball 230m, you fall over a ridge, and your ball and easily travel another 100m leaving a concise pitch into a par 5 down at the water’s edge.
Hole 6 is probably the most photographed hole on the course. A medium par three over rocks and sea will test your club selection and confidence levels.
There are plenty of other amazing holes on the course, and regardless of your ability, you will leave the 18th green feeling like you have been tested.
Hacker notes
Book early. Simple as that. There are spots for outsiders but don’t expect you can rock into Sydney and play the next day. You may also need a letter from your home course.
I was lucky enough to get some heavily discounted rates the day we played due to some reciprocal rates, but I believe the standard feeds for a nonmembers guest are around $300.
As per all Australian courses, respect the bush areas as creatures can kill you lurking, most notably snakes.
Lasting thoughts
As a younger guy playing NSW with my equally casual friend, I remember feeling a bit out of place on the course. Like we did not really belong. But I think going back a second time, I would learn from this and force myself to soak up the course for all it was worth.
The truly tricky thing about NSW is the blind shots. You really need to play the course a handful of times to understand it, and for the occasional visitor, this is unlikely to happen.
NSW is not a resort course by any means, so don’t expect to play fun and easy golf. But bring your ‘A’ game, and you will know you have beaten a very tough course.
8.3 out of 10 – In terms of course design, I am sure NSW deserves a much higher score. However, as someone that puts fun at the top of my golf priority tree, this was a tough day out. The course is truly amazing, but you come off feeling very beaten up.

Crowds clash with police after bishop allegedly stabbed during mass in Sydney
Riot police called in to disperse angry locals after 15-year-old arrested over suspected attack on Mar Mari Emmanuel at Assyrian church in Wakeley
- LATEST NEWS: Police treating alleged Sydney church stabbing as terrorist attack
- Get our morning and afternoon news emails , free app or daily news podcast
Hundreds of people clashed with police in western Sydney on Monday night after a prominent Orthodox Christian leader was allegedly stabbed at the altar of his church.
The New South Wales premier, Chris Minns, called for calm after the alleged attack took place while Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was saying mass at the Assyrian Christ the Good Shepherd church in Wakeley just after 7pm.
A live stream of the mass on the church’s website showed a person approaching the altar who then appeared to stab toward the bishop’s head multiple times. Three other people were also injured in the alleged attack.
The footage of the mass then showed the congregation swarm forward toward Emmanuel before the stream was cut off.

Police said that they had arrested a 15-year-old at the scene and were forced to hold him at the church for his own safety as a large crowd of several hundred people gathered outside the church.
Riot police were called in to forcibly move the crowd on after police cars were smashed.
A helicopter flew overhead urging the crowd to leave the area.
“Those violent pictures [from the live stream] are probably what caused the uproar in the community – people saw that, responded and unfortunately we ended up with a public order incident,” the NSW acting assistant commissioner, Andrew Holland, told reporters.
He said the 15-year-old suspect, who was held down by parishioners of the church until police arrived, “sustained injuries to his hand as a result of his actions”.
Holland said police were “in the process of taking the teenager from the church” when they realised that a large group had gathered outside and decided to keep the suspect in the church “for his safety”.
Two police officers were taken to hospital after being injured by members of the crowd who broke into “a number of houses to gain weapons to throw at the police”.
Holland said some in the group also threw items at the church in a bid to get access to the suspect.
“They need to let police to do their jobs and let us do the investigation,” he said, promising more arrests over the public order incident.
Minns urged the community to remain calm.
“Disturbing scenes tonight in Wakeley tonight,” he said in a post to X. “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and first responders who are working to keep us safe.
“It’s important that the community remain calm and continue to listen and act to the directions of police and emergency services.”
Emmanuel, who gained a large online following during the Covid pandemic, was taken to hospital along with another priest. Both were in a stable condition on Monday night, the church said in a statement posted on social media last night.
“We ask for your prayers at this time. We also kindly ask anyone at the church to leave in peace as our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, teaches us.”
Amid tensions in western Sydney, Inamul Haq Kauser, national president and grand imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, said the community unequivocally condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms”.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to all those injured in the attack and wish them a speedy and complete recovery.”
The injured people suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated by NSW ambulance paramedics.
NSW Ambulance said they were called to the church about 7.15pm and sent paramedic teams to the scene.
A spokesperson said they had treated a man in his 50s for multiple cuts before taking him to Liverpool hospital.
A man his 30s was also treated for lacerations and taken to hospital.
A man in his 20s was being treated for a cut to his hand and a man in his 60s treated for a laceration to his arm at the scene.
The incident comes with Sydney still reeling from the shocking killings of six people at Bondi Junction Westfield on Saturday.
