Overview of Bhutan

Bhutan

Bhutan is a landlocked South Asian country nestled in the foothills of the fabled Himalayas. This small country is sandwiched between India and Tibet, just east of Nepal and north of Bangladesh, with a total coverage of around 38,400 km2.

Due to its unique location, Bhutan’s terrain mostly consists of mountainous slopes, valleys, and hills.

Best Time For A Trip To Bhutan

The best time for a trip to Bhutan is in the fall (from the end of September to the end of November), when the weather is pleasant, with clear blue skies and dry, sunny days ideal for sightseeing excursions, outdoor activities, and exceptional photographic opportunities.

Autumn, particularly in October, is also a festive season in Bhutan, with numerous traditional festivals celebrated in most parts of the country, allowing tourist to immerse themselves in the world of Bhutanese essences.

Bhutan is enchanting throughout the year, and the country invites tourists with other captivating festivals and each season.

Spring in Bhutan may be rainier than autumn, but it is an excellent time to admire the wild beauty of magnolias, rhododendrons, and other wildflowers in the valleys.

Summer is a good time to visit major cities such as Paro, Punakha, Thimphu’s capital, and other areas in the west. If you enjoy snow activities, a winter trip to Bhutan is a truly thrilling adventure that awaits you.

Spirituality

Bhutan is frequently referred to as the world’s last fortress of traditional Himalayan Buddhist culture.

Bhutan’s official religion is Vajrayana Buddhism. As a result, Buddhism is central to Bhutanese customs and culture, and most residents are followers of the religion.

Buddhism impacts many aspects of a country, such as traditions, government, national regulations, administrative work, and even education.

Bhutan houses a wide variety of cultural attractions, most of which are Buddhist sites or influenced by Buddhist architectural art, which can be seen in traditional Bhutanese houses and monasteries during your trip to Bhutan.

Bhutanese tourism infrastructure has greatly improved in recent years, with more options for services and amenities for tourists on their trip to Bhutan.

While Bhutan has opened up to the world, it still adheres to valuable principles that contribute significantly to local culture, environmental preservation, and sustainable tourism development.

Fun fact: Despite opening its borders in early 70s, Bhutan has managed to remain untouched and hidden from the rest of the world.

Travel Advice For Bhutan Trip

Bhutan

Prior to starting your Bhutan trip, tourists traveling from abroad must to get a travel visa . You cannot apply Visa on arrival on the airport, as in many other countries, nor will tourists be able to locate a Bhutanese embassy, as Bhutan maintains only a few official diplomatic relations worldwide.

The procedures for obtaining a visa to enter Bhutan can be challenging, therefore you should seek assistance from travel agencies for a smooth and swift procedure.

At Norbu Bhutan Travel, we collect necessary documents from our guests to assist them in obtaining a travel visa and email the copy of the travel visa before departure.

Note: To enter the enchanting country, you must print the copy and bring it to the airport.

Common Etiquettes

  • You should wear decent clothes when visiting formal and or sacred places in Bhutan. Visitors are not allowed to take pictures inside certain attractions.
  • Refusing food for the first time is a custom in Bhutan, in fact, it’s seen as a sign of respect. Cover your mouth and say “Mezhu,” as done by Bhutanese people.
  • Tobacco use in public places such as restaurants, streets, and halls is prohibited in Bhutan. You must not smoke in public places, or you will be fined or even imprisoned by the police.
  • Because Buddhism is Bhutan’s national religion, it is illegal to kill any living organism. This law is based on Buddhist philosophies’ traditional values.

Bhutan announces new tourism incentives - click here to read more

Welcome to Bhutan

In a world that is always on the go, Bhutan provides sanctuary. Here, you can find earthly pleasures: archery and age-old crafts, dishes of home-made cheese and fearsomely hot chillies, breathtaking treks and restorative hot-stone baths.

But there’s another Bhutan, too – the one hinted at by the prayer flags strung across gorges and fluttering on every hillside. It’s where irreverent humour meets deeply held beliefs, and epic landscapes and slow journeys create room for quiet awe. In this Bhutan, you can enhance your well-being, immerse yourself in wonder and embark on exhilarating adventures.

More than 70% forested, and the first carbon-negative country in the world, we’re also planting the seeds of science and tech innovation.

There isn't just one Bhutan to discover; there are many. From storied cities to soaring mountains, the door to the kingdom is open once again to old and new friends.

norbu bhutan travel

This kingdom is steeped in history, but our gaze is fixed on the future. This is our moment of evolution.

Guardians of some of the world’s most pristine, wild and sacred places – and of a rich, deeply rooted culture – we are steadfast as the cypress in our commitment to conservation., our future requires us to protect our heritage and to forge fresh pathways for forthcoming generations., those who seek us out are called here. arriving as guests, you become our partners in this transformative moment and make a meaningful contribution towards preserving what is priceless., we see a bright future. and we believe in our ability and responsibility to realise it together, and shine as a beacon of possibility in the world., elevated values, bhutan believes.

From our reopening on September 23rd, visitors to Bhutan will make an active contribution to Bhutan’s economic, social and cultural development. The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) enables investment in transformative programmes that preserve our traditions, protect our heritage and environment, upgrade infrastructure, create opportunities for our young people, and build resilience.

Bhutan has recently announced incentives for longer stays in Bhutan. Click here to read more.

One of the world’s most sought-after, and expensive, mushrooms, the matsutake draws fungi fans from around the globe to Ura and Genekha. These tranquil villages are now the unlikely epicentre of a mushroom-powered transformation, attracting visitors from far and wide keen to try their hands at finding the matsutake on our forested mountains, and to sample their rich culture and gentle pace. The Matsutake festivals in August are a perfect time to visit, giving you the chance to pick and taste these marvellous mushrooms, as well as a rare opportunity to enjoy mask dances and local food.

norbu bhutan travel

Hey everyone,

I've been meaning to travel to Bhutan in a few days but I still haven't been able to decide on the tour operator to deal with.

I've read through a lot of posts here on this forum but I haven't seen anything about Norbu Bhutan Travel Pvt Ltd or Eco Expeditions & Tours Pvt Ltd.

Eco Expeditions is a representative of Norbu Bhutan Travel.

They are giving me a good overall package price and I really need to book as quickly as possible.

I also got a quote from Yetis & Dragons and Nirvana Expeditions. Nirvana's cost is about 30000 INR more than Norbu Bhutan's cost.

I have three questions:

1) Anyone has dealt with Norbu Bhutan Travel/Eco Expeditions and can describe their experience?

2) Neither Norbu Bhutan or Nirvana Expeditions are listed on the official Bhutan Tourism site. Will that pose a problem?

3) I've been turned off from going ahead with Yetis and Dragons because of the negative reviews here. Is that a correct decision?

Thank you for any help. Bhutan looks like a beautiful country and I can't wait to travel there!

Norbu Bhutan is a very famous name inside Bhutan. They have a good reputation and was recommended widely on Fodors. My friend travelled with them and did satisfy for what they arranged. Enjoy your trip!

' class=

Dear Mr. Kuenzang & others, just finished my tour with NBT so can give a unbiased opinion. Frankly speaking, the only reason I chose NBT was the fact that they had an Indian agent as I faced a lot of issues remitting the funds to the Bhutanese banks. The trip was one of the most amazing I have had, but that had little to do with NBT for reasons I will explain.

The guide & driver appointed were the most caring and professional people I have met in my years of travelling globally. Sadly that's were it ended as probably any agency would gave arranged hotel bookings (you can,do the same online as well) and hire a certified guide for as little as Rs. 1200 a day.

My suggestion is to use a more professional agency like Etho Metho, Nirvana etc. or plan a trip directly as you would save at least 30%-40% on their price with EXACTLY the same experience. The crass behavior of one staff spoiled what would have been an experience of a lifetime for all of us.

We travelled for 1 week in April 2014 with the company Norbu Bhutan (recommended and arranged through out tour operator Cox and Kings). We had a superb trip, well organised and with a knowledgeable & friendly guide called Phub Tenzin and excellent driver - Yangley.

Greetings. Read your review about Norbu Bhutan. We are also planning to travel to Bhutan through Norbu Bhutan December'2014. Would like to know your views and experience about the trip and the travel agency.

Waiting for your reply.

NORBU BHUTAN TRAVEL TVT. LTD.

Today, when the world is vying to conceive reform and implement eco-friendly tourism, Bhutan has established itself as a distinct island in the Himalaya region where the society, the culture, the economy, polity and the environment are truly maintaining a most harmonious relationship.

Bhutan is the only country where the progress is not measured by the popular idea of Gross Domestic Product but only through Gross National Happiness.

The world argues that the key to happiness is obtaining and enjoying material development, but we believe that true development of human society takes place when material and spiritual development occur side by side to complement and reinforce each other. A mountainous country like Bhutan which consciously preserves its pristine natural and cultural heritage needs tourism that harmonizes and sustains the environment and acts synergistically to protect, preserve and conserve both nature and culture.

Guided by this premise,  Norbu Bhutan Travel Pvt. Ltd. (NBT)  is a well established travel company. We offer tourism services promoting the principle of “value, responsible and sustainable tourism” through reliable, personalized and professional services to all its esteemed clientele. We want to build a company that focuses exclusively to provide a memorable “Travel experience in Bhutan” with the help of its dedicated well trained and highly professional team of experienced staff and its access to quality facilities.
