Natalie Merchant sings onstage.

If you’re in need of a dose of ’90s nostalgia, we’ve got just the concert for you.

10,000 Maniacs lead singer turned solo artist Natalie Merchant is midway through her ongoing ‘Keep Your Courage Tour’ in support of her 2023 album that shares a name with the tour.

However, if you want to hear Merchant’s rich vocals live in the Big Apple , you better act fast.

The Jamestown, NY native has two concerts at New York City’s Alice Tully Hall on Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3 .

In the event that those shows are a bit too last-minute, you can catch Merchant live at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center on June 25.

And should you wait to see the “Kind and Generous” singer in the Garden State, you can save big time.

At the time of publication, ticket prices to see her live at NJPAC start at $58 before fees on Vivid Seats.

$116 before fees is the lowest price for the Alice Tully Hall gigs.

She’ll also perform at Chautauqua, NY’s Chautauqua Amphitheater on July 8.

Not in NYC or NJ and want to catch the ’90s icon live this year?

No need to worry — we’ve got all the information you’ll need about all remaining tour dates on Natalie Merchant’s ‘Keep Your Courage Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Natalie Merchant 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all Natalie Merchant tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Natalie Merchant new music

In 2023, Merchant released her first album in six years.

“Keep Your Courage,” comprised of ten tracks, demonstrates the singer’s evolution as a vocalist. Her voice is deeper, more assured, contemplative and mature than ever before.

If you’re a fan of Merchant’s earlier work, this record may seem like a departure but after multiple listens, you’ll hear the playful tone and wistful lyrics within the music that make Merchant such a singular artist.

For our money, we suggest starting with the spellbinding “Sister Tilly” which surprised us with a tempo change halfway through — it’s almost like a singer-songwriter dropping a beat.

We’re also quite fond of the quietly bombastic “Hunting The Wren” as well.

You can hear the 54-minute record in its entirety here .

Female singer-songwriters on tour in 2023

Many world-class singers are out and about on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

•  Tori Amos

•  Liz Phair

•  Erykah Badu

•  Stevie Nicks

•  Brandi Carlile

Nonesuch Records will release Natalie Merchant’s Keep Your Courage , her ninth solo studio album and first of new material since 2014’s self-titled record, on April 14, 2023. An eclectic album, produced by Merchant, it features two duets sung with vocalist Abena Koomson-Davis (Resistance Revival Chorus), contributions from the Celtic folk group Lúnasa and Syrian virtuoso clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, and horn arrangements by jazz trombonist Steve Davis. There are lush orchestrations throughout by seven composers including: Gabriel Kahane, Stephen Barber, Colin Jacobson, and Megan Gould. Keep Your Courage comprises nine original songs by Merchant as well as an interpretation of “Hunting the Wren” by Ian Lynch of the Irish band Lankum. The vinyl LP edition of Keep Your Courage includes four bonus tracks from earlier albums, previously unreleased on vinyl.

In celebration of the release, Merchant will embark upon a US tour this spring, going into the fall (schedule below); European dates will be announced shortly. Keep Your Courage is available to preorder here .

Merchant writes in her album’s liner notes, “The songs contained within this album were written and recorded during the global pandemic that began in the winter of 2019 and is in its fifth wave as I write, in the autumn of 2022. It has been, and continues to be, a period of great flux and fear on every level: global, national, communal, familial, personal. But this is not an album about the coronavirus or the chaos it caused. For the most part, this is an album about the human heart.” She continues, “The word ‘courage’ has its root in the Latin word for heart, cor, and we see it over and over in many languages: le coeur, il cuore, o coração, el corazón. This is a song cycle that maps the journey of a courageous heart.”

Over her forty-year career Natalie Merchant has attained a place among America’s most respected recording artists. She has earned a reputation for being a songwriter of quality and a captivating stage performer and has distinguished herself as a social justice and environmental activist. Merchant began her musical career as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the pop music band 10,000 Maniacs and released one platinum, two double-platinum, and one triple-platinum records with the group: The Wishing Chair (1985), In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man’s Zoo (1989), Hope Chest (1990), Our Time in Eden (1992), and 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged (1993). Merchant left the group in 1994 and has subsequently released nine albums as a solo artist with combined sales of seven million copies: Tigerlily (1995), Ophelia (1998), Natalie Merchant Live (1999), Motherland (2001), The House Carpenter’s Daughter (2003), Leave Your Sleep (2010), Natalie Merchant (2014), Paradise Is There (2015), and Butterfly (2017).

Merchant has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Billy Bragg, Gavin Bryars, David Byrne, The Chieftains, Cowboy Junkies, Philip Glass, Kronos Quartet, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mavis Staples, REM, and Wilco. She served on the New York State Council on the Arts from 2007–2011 at the appointment of Governor Elliot Spitzer and was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Library of Congress’ American Folklife Center by New York State Senator and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Merchant’s awards include: The Library Lion Award from the New York Public Library (2011), The American Society of Authors Composers & Publishers (ASCAP) Champion Award (2019), and The John Lennon Real Love Award (2019). natalie merchant concert tour 2023

Natalie Merchant had the voice of the ‘90s. Its honeyed, autumnal melancholy was tougher than Sarah McLachlan, less affected than Dolores O’Riordan, more soaring than the earthbound Indigo Girls. Just listen to her duet with Michael Stipe on the chilling “Photograph.” It’s the perfect union for every moody young person who wore a flannel or flowing skirts and drove around at night with their friends listening to Automatic for the People or Our Time in Eden , going nowhere but in exciting circles.

Hearing that voice today brings back the memories. Over the course of nearly three hours at Portland’s Keller Auditorium, Merchant played a 24-song set that touched on all aspects of her post-10,000 Maniacs career. In front of a sold-out crowd, Merchant balanced the set with songs from her beloved debut album, Tigerlily (1995) to this year’s Keep Your Courage , her first full collection of original songs since her self-titled 2014 record.

Merchant’s mercurial personality became apparent the moment she took the stage. Preceded by the eight musicians (including a string section) who backed her, Merchant walked out to rapturous applause. But some strange lighting choice made it appear as if heatwaves shimmered around her. Merchant halted the music, made a joke about having lift-off and then walked off to start again. Then she launched into a gorgeous rendition of “Lulu.”

On her Wikipedia page, there is a caption that reads, “Merchant became known for her swirling style of dancing and her simple dress while performing with 10,000 Maniacs.” Well, swirl she did, moving with vigor and grace that belied her nearly 60 years. She began the show in a flowing red shirt and skirt, shrouded in a diaphanous white shawl. Merchant swayed and moved like a ballet dancer, oftentimes turning towards the drummer and clutching her skirt like Stevie Nicks. Even though she made a comment about no longer exercising, Merchant appears to have embraced middle-age head-on. She wore her hair long, letting it go naturally gray. Little to no makeup adorned her face. Merchant owns her years. Doesn’t deny the passage of time.

And then there is that voice. A bit huskier than the ‘90s, Merchant sings with the same startling clarity. She can still hit the high notes, the ones that shimmy through your bones, attack the pit of your stomach. “Beloved Wife” induced chills when she reached for its bittersweet heights while the cabaret restraint of “Motherland” demonstrated Merchant’s range.

What has happened to Merchant since the peak of her popularity in ‘90s? Many still confuse “Because the Night” with being her song after the 10,000 Maniacs’ Unplugged version broke into the national consciousness in 1993. But after the acclaimed debut of Tigerlily , Merchant’s audience became more niche – mainly 10,000 Maniacs refugees and middle-aged folks who frequent coffee shops. She hasn’t crossed over to new fans like many of her peers. Despite releasing multiple albums since the mid-‘90s, Pitchfork – a website currently announcing the 25th anniversary re-release of R.E.M.’s Up – has never reviewed one.

The songs on Keep Your Courage beg to be heard. Merchant said that she is very proud of the album but warned that the songs were quite sad. But still she totally nailed “Big Girls” and “Come On, Aphrodite” got audience members up and dancing before the intermission. Meanwhile, Merchant said that God would be pissed off after she played “The Feast of Saint Valentine” since that rendition had reached perfection that evening.

The appreciation in the room felt mutual. At one point, Merchant exclaimed, “I’m moving to Portland!” She also recognized her “favorite fan” in the front and embraced the young girl before instructing someone offstage to give her a backstage pass. At times, Merchant got emotional, breaking into tears during “King of May,” the song she wrote for Allen Ginsberg’s memorial and then crying again through a devastatingly good version of “Life Is Sweet.”

Merchant admitted that most of her time is committed to mundane acts like parenting, sending emails and dusting her credenza. However, she is still able to “run away with the circus” at times and play concerts. At one point, she said that people seeing her for the first time and could now say, “at least I saw her before she died.” But Merchant seemed full of vigor. She must have a new lease on life after a spinal surgery in 2020 robbed her of her voice for some time.

Merchant claimed that she “brutalized” the audience in Spokane by playing a three-and-a-half hours and wouldn’t do that to us (she played 27 songs there vs. 24 here). But after finishing the second set with “Kind & Generous,” she returned with just her core band for a slinky encore featuring favorites, “Carnival” and “These Are Days.” Bursting with kinetic energy, these quicker renditions provided a celebratory coda to an evening fraught with emotional ballads. And for those young people who dreamed big with open hearts in the ‘90s with Merchant’s voice as the soundtrack, they are now grown up and have a mortgage and a job and kids. For them, there is a kneejerk reaction of nostalgia when hearing Merchant sing now. She can transport us back to a time of innocence and terror and uncertainty, a time when broken angels like Narcissus and Ophelia and Pandora are given another chance. A time when River Phoenix broke hearts on the screen and the future unfolded in waves of mystery, swirling tides of possibility.

Event Details

Nonesuch Records will release Natalie Merchant’s Keep Your Courage , her ninth solo studio album and first of new material since 2014’s self-titled record, on April 14, 2023. An eclectic album, produced by Merchant, it features two duets sung with vocalist Abena Koomson-Davis (Resistance Revival Chorus), contributions from the Celtic folk group Lúnasa and Syrian virtuoso clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, and horn arrangements by jazz trombonist Steve Davis. The vinyl LP edition of Keep Your Courage includes four bonus tracks from earlier albums, previously unreleased on vinyl. In celebration of the release, Merchant will embark upon a US tour this spring, including a stop at The St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Friday, April 28, 2023.

Over her forty-year career Natalie Merchant has attained a place among America’s most respected recording artists. She has earned a reputation for being a songwriter of quality and a captivating stage performer and has distinguished herself as a social justice and environmental activist. Merchant began her musical career as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the pop music band 10,000 Maniacs and released one platinum, two double-platinum, and one triple-platinum records with the group: The Wishing Chair (1985), In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man's Zoo (1989), Hope Chest (1990), Our Time in Eden (1992), and 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged (1993).

Merchant’s awards include: The Library Lion Award from the New York Public Library (2011), The American Society of Authors Composers & Publishers (ASCAP) Champion Award, and The John Lennon Real Love Award.

Your Guide to 2023 Summer Concerts Sponsored by ICCU

May 5, 2023

People at a concert

Find out how to get tickets and info on concerts in your area.

We survived another northwest winter (with snowpack  120 percent  above average!) and there’s no better way to celebrate this newfound sun than with a lineup of concerts and music festivals.

Because no two concerts are alike, we can’t give you one catch-all hub to buy tickets and ask questions. But we can do the next best thing — we’ll show you exactly what we know and where you can learn more. Use this guide to get an overview of each concert sponsored in your area.

Idaho Central Credit Union partners with music venues throughout Idaho and Eastern Washington to bring together communities and local businesses. Our role in each partnership varies. The venues themselves deserve the credit for making these shows a reality!

Summer Concerts in Treasure Valley

Idaho central arena

Idaho Central Arena (Boise)

We don’t know how they do it, but the Idaho Central Arena in Boise is both a jack of all trades and a master of, well, almost everything. Whether you’re in the mood for a Billboard Hot 100 artist, a dance performance, or even a flower show, you won’t be disappointed. The arena announces new acts all the time, so be sure to check their site often for an updated list. Idaho Central Credit Union has naming rights to the arena.

More Information

Tickets:  Idaho Central Arena Contact: 208-424-2200 Location: 233 S Capitol Blvd, Boise, ID 83702

Idaho Botanical Garden – Outlaw Field (Boise)

If you’re looking to experience a unique concert venue, Outlaw Field is the one for you. Before it took its place as one of Western Idaho’s most popular venues, Outlaw Field operated as a prison yard  for over 100 years . Now it’s part of the Idaho Botanical Garden, a nonprofit situated next to the Greenbelt River in the heart of downtown Boise. As the presenting stage sponsor, we’re excited to announce big names like The Avett Brothers, Modest Mouse, and Kelsea Ballerini. Concerts run all summer long but be warned — tickets sell out fast. See a full list of performers and dates on the Idaho Botanical Garden’s website.

Tickets:  Idaho Botanical Garden Contact: 208-343-8649 Location: 2355 Old Penitentiary Rd. Boise, Idaho 83712

Stoney’s Road House (Emmett)

Stoney’s Road House is a country music lover’s dream come true. Though it may be in an old Boise Cascade laminate plant, don’t let the factory façade fool you. Boasting a 2,300 sq ft dance floor and a massive, elevated stage, Stoney’s expertly combines urbanity with a classic country vibe to give you an unforgettable concert experience. Stay tuned to see 2023’s lineup! Idaho Central Credit Union is a concert sponsor of Stoney’s Road House.

Tickets:  Stoney’s Road House Contact: 702-435-2855 Location: 1050 Cascade Rd, Emmett, ID 83617

Ford Idaho Center (Nampa)

The Ford Idaho Center doesn’t mess around. With 25+ artists already confirmed, this arena has a little something for everyone. Country, rock, alternative, you name it. Since 1997, the center has housed countless memories for locals and visitors alike — and given 2023’s all-star lineup, it doesn’t show signs of slowing down anytime soon. Check out their site to get more information on artists like Luke Bryan, Young the Giant, and Lindsey Stirling. Idaho Central Credit Union is a sponsor at the Ford Idaho Center Arena.

Tickets:  Ford Idaho Center Contact: 208-442-3232 Location: 16114 N Idaho Center Blvd, Nampa, ID 83687

Boise Music Festival (Garden City)

Every year, concert goers flock to the Boise Music Fest, a 12-hour event complete with nationally acclaimed artists, carnival rides, and more. As one of the Treasure Valley’s biggest annual music events, it’s known for its one-of-a-kind shows and genre-diverse lineups. June 24 is coming quickly, though, so be sure to get tickets ASAP. Idaho Central Credit Union is a supporting sponsor of the Boise Music Festival.

Tickets:  Boise Music Festival Contact: 208-344-6363 Location: 5610 Glenwood St., Garden City, ID 83714

Eastern Idaho State Fair (Blackfoot)

The Eastern Idaho State Fair is bringing back old-fashioned fun, and trust us, it’s not something you want to miss. Dating back to 1902 (almost 125 years!), this week-long event brings together nearly a quarter-million visitors annually, and just a glance at the scheduled entertainment will show you why. Catch ICCU-sponsored livestock competitions, award-winning fair food, demolition derbies, and incredible performances from artists like Walker Hayes — all from September 1 to 9, 2023. In-depth schedules for each fair day will be released on the State Fair’s website in the early summer.

Tickets:  Fun at the Fair Contact: 208-785-2480 Location: 97 Park Street, Blackfoot, ID 83221

Summer Concerts in North Idaho and Eastern Washington

Outside concert by a lake

Idaho Central Credit Union Amphitheater at Riverstone Park (Coeur d’Alene)

North Idaho State Fair (Coeur d’Alene)

Musicians, watermelon eating contests, monster truck rallies — the North Idaho Fair has it all. Join us, a co-presenting sponsor, on August 18–27 to celebrate Idaho’s agriculture and community. Stick around on August 21–23 for the annual Party in the Dirt Concert, featuring artists like Carly Pearce and Chase Rice. Tickets for each concert day are on sale now.

More information will become available on the Spokane County’s website as the dates get closer.

Tickets:  Spokane County Interstate Fair Contact: 509-477-2787 (pre-recorded line) Location: 404 N Havana St, Suite 1, Spokane Valley, WA 99202

2023 Summer Country Showdown (Moscow)

Get ready for two days of music, food, and fun in the ICCU Arena at the University of Idaho. The arena itself is brand-spanking-new; built in 2021, it boasts  67,000 square feet , seating for over 1,000, and a premium club area. On August 25 and 26, you’ll get the chance to see hit country artists and independent artists who were born and raised in North Idaho. Check their website regularly — a full lineup will be announced soon! Idaho Central Credit Union has naming rights to the arena and is a sponsor of the festival.
