We’ve broken them down into five categories based on aesthetic and feel, so you know exactly which one to choose depending on the vacation vibe you want.

A Touch of Tropical Nails

Whether you want beach holiday nails or wish to bring a touch of the tropics on your travels, these fun tropical vacation nails are a fantastic choice.

Pink Seascape

Tropical nails aren’t limited to blue, yellow, and orange. A nice pop of pink with a stunning seascape is an excellent choice for a sexy and trendy vacation mani.

Pearly Shells

This shell-inspired manicure is the perfect choice for lounging on the beach with a delicious tiki cocktail! Use 3D accents like pearls to make this mani really stand out.

Multicolored Mix and Match

Combine many bright colors to achieve the best summer nails for your vacation! Plus, mixing designs like swirly tips, clouds, and hibiscus flowers can amp up your nails even more.

Glitter and Dusk

Bright daylight colors are great for vacation nails, but don’t underestimate the colors of dusk. Pair baby blue and light coral with glittery accent nails and palm tree nail art for softer, dreamier nails.

Neon Sunset

Go bright and bold with a shocking neon mani in the colors of the sunset! Add a tropical touch to it with a palm tree silhouette on the accent nails.

Sunlight and Flamingos

Heading down the coast? Give yourself a fun glossy orange-and-pink manicure with palm tree, flamingo, and marbly swirl designs.

Tropical French Tips

Give your deep French mani a vacation vibe with a fun pastiche of different nail art styles used to create palm trees, dolphins, birds, and hearts .

Neon and Nail Art

Neon colors like orange and yellow look fabulous, especially when paired with beach silhouettes on the accent nails — the perfect nail design for tropical vacations!

Tropical manis don’t necessarily have to have lots of colors. A full pink palette looks beautiful with glittery accent nails and palm tree nail art.

Create gorgeous Riviera-inspired French-tip nails by combining blue , teal, and orange tips to achieve a unique design on a smooth white base.

Sun and Sand

Coral and yellow nails are a dazzling contrast to the bright beach sand of your vacay destination. Amp up your manicure further with vacation nail art of palm trees, which you can draw on with pens like the Kalolary Nail Polish Pens .

Music Festivals and Desert Love

Desert music festivals like Coachella and Burning Man are always full of gorgeous bohemian fashion and artistic styles.

Take inspiration from these iconic annual events and create a manicure that can give you chic, festival-inspired looks wherever you go.

70s Glam and Gloss

Everything about this mani screams boho chic! It combines fun ‘70s vibes with music-fest styles by creating funky nail art of flowers, smiley faces , cherries, and more in a matching pastel palette.

Flower Power

You can never have too many flowers in your mani — or too many colors, for that matter. This nail design proves it! Go all out by creating standout florals on clear glossy nails.

Abstract French Tips

Abstract French tips are an artistic way to sport a unique manicure. This mani uses bright, vibrant colors to create swirly French tips in assorted colors with a bold accent nail in bright pink and cow print.

Pastel Tie-Dye

Tie-dye is always an excellent choice for summer vacations. This sweet pastel-colored tie-dye mani is perfect for going to concerts or just laying out in the sun by the pool.

Pearls and Swirls

Want a combination of striking and sweet? This bold manicure uses bright and vibrant colors to create swirls on each nail, sweetened with pearl accents.

Stylish Desert Nails

These vacation acrylic nails showcase a dazzling desert landscape in a gorgeous Southwestern-inspired color palette. They’re so beautiful and stylish you can’t stop looking at them.

Gorgeous Neon Swirls

Use a lot of bright and bold neon colors to create abstract nail art on a clear glossy base. This particular design perfectly combines hints of seven bright and eye-catching colors for a quirky yet chic mani.

Half-Dipped and Leaf Art

Half-dipped nails are a good alternative to French tips if you want to try something new and unique. Pair these with abstract leaf art for some stunning and classy vacation nails.

Sea Inspired Nails

Do you love the ocean as much as we do? Use your love for the sea as an inspiration to create gorgeous nails, just like these vacation manicures did.

Wave-Crest French Tips

Create breathtakingly unique French tips by taking inspiration from the stunning crests of breaking waves. Swirl together shades of blue and white to recreate the movement of beautiful ocean currents.

Shining Shimmering Splendid

These beautiful iridescent nails are perfect for a glimmering under-the-sea-inspired manicure. Confetti nail stickers mimic seaweed, while glitter polish and rhinestone accents provide underwater shine.

Turquoise and Gold

Create a sleek, sophisticated, ocean-inspired manicure by decorating soft cashmere-colored nails with turquoise ocean swirls and glimmering flecks of gold foil.

Mermaid Tails

Glam up a sea blue manicure with mermaid accent nails. You can paint a tail on one nail and a close-up of beautiful mermaid scales on another.

This ocean-inspired manicure is more abstract than literal; it combines several shades of ocean blue instead of typical ocean-inspired nail art elements.

Mix and match this plain mani with swirly French tips and beautiful accent nails with blue swirls.

Kanagawa Waves

Make your nails a literal work of art! Recreate this glossy manicure with blue-and-gold ocean wave tips inspired by the famous Japanese artwork “The Wave of Kanagawa.”

Under the Sea

These fun vacation nails showcase a stunning under-the-sea story by combining shades of blue and purple and featuring nail art of turtles and seaweed, along with an octopus stretching across several nails.

Breaking Waves

Pay tribute to turbulent but beautiful ocean waves with this manicure that showcases stunning break waves and seagulls flying over the sea.

Blue, Purple, and Pink

Add feminine flair to these pretty watercolor sea swirls with a pale pink base color. And finish the gorgeous look with touches of purple and gold accents.

Nails Perfect For Stylish Sunny Days

Get inspiration from sunny days and blooming flowers to create cute nails for vacations, no matter where you go.

These vibrant nail designs and floral manis are some of our faves!

Minimal Florals

Sunny summer vacations call for fabulous florals. This stylish minimalist manicure features burnt orange and hunter-green flowers and leaves.

Orange Sunrise

Bright, vibrant orange and pink make the perfect color combination for a refreshing summer mani. This one looks extra special with the addition of glittery gold outlines.

Flowers and Leaves

You can never get enough florals. These rainbow-colored matte floral nails combine several colors, flowers, and leaves in one bright and beautiful manicure.

Sunny Yellow Landscape

Sweet sunny yellow is always a good choice for a vacation manicure. Elevate your soft yellow nails further with a landscape silhouette on the accent nails.

Fruity Orange Nails

Try this fun twist on refreshing orange nails. Surround them with leaves and accents in unexpected colors like blue and gold.

Colorful Nail Art

While nail art can work with matte or glitter finishes, there’s just something super classy about a glossy mani. This multicolored manicure looks beautiful with colorful nail art and a shiny finish.

Bright Red and Pointillism

Make red polish work for your summer vacation manicure by option for a bright and vibrant shade. You can pair it with multicolored pointillism-inspired flowers with gold centers.

This combination of pink nails and black leaf nail art is both sweet and stylish. If you want a vacay mani that’s good for both day and night, these beautiful nails can make the perfect accessories for strolls on the beach to cocktails at the hotel.

Sunset Swirls

This gorgeous and sophisticated manicure features a golden sunset’s orange and yellow colors in watercolor-inspired swirls with gold flakes. A super stylish and glam choice.

Feminine Florals

Create stunning feminine floral nails on a minimal glossy manicure. It’s stylish and sweet, and you can switch it up by alternating between painting the flowers and leaves at the top and bottom of your nails.

Pink Sunset

Break up a full pink mani by adding a stunning accent like this soft gradient nail with a sunset silhouette. It’s pretty, sweet, and stylish.

Sweet Strawberries

Combine bright red and pink to create a summer strawberry mani. Instead of painting full strawberries on each nail, mix it up with pink and red nails and berry-inspired French tips. The result is playful and vibrant.

White Vacation Nails

Who can say no to a stunning white manicure? It’s sleek and stylish. You can add some floral fun to your nails by painting beautiful summer blooms on the tips and cuticles.

Frequently  Asked Questions

What’s the best polish for vacation nails.

Generally, gel polish is the most ideal choice since they last longer than other nail products, giving you worry-free vacation nails.

The Beetles 20 Gel Nail Polish Kit is a good option for this. The kit has several fun colors for you to choose from.

How Can I Make Sure My Vacay Mani Lasts?

If you aren’t going for a gel or acrylic manicure , you’re generally looking at a manicure that lasts roughly five to seven days, depending on your nail polish. Here are tips on how to make your mani last longer:

  • Swab your nails with alcohol before your manicure. This removes oil build-up that can create a barrier between your choice of polish and the surface of your nails.
  • File nails to keep them neat. Whether your nails are short or long, keeping your nails filed neatly prevents breaking and chipping.
  • Use a base coat. This helps your polish adhere to your nails longer. A good base coat you can use is the OPI Natural Nail Base Coat .
  • Dry your nail polish with cool air. If you’re using your hair dryer, use the cool setting, as cool air helps nail polish firm up faster. As they dry, you can also dip them quickly in ice water.
  • Reapply clear top coat. You can apply a top coat to your nails every two to three days to maintain shine and prevent chipping. One of our favorite top coat products is the Sally Hansen Dries Instantly Top Coat , which is formulated for ultimate color protection.
  • Keep hands and nails moisturized. Avoid alcohol that can dry your nails. You can also apply nail/cuticle oil to keep your nails hydrated.

The Perfect Vacation Nail-Fie

When planning the ultimate vacay, you want everything to be perfect, from your outfits to your hairstyles to your accessories, and yes, your nails too!

16 Vacation Nail Ideas to Get You Ready For Your Trip

Updated on 3/28/2024 at 4:45 PM

nails for trip to italy

Sometimes, the beauty prep for a vacation can take almost as long as the trip itself. Depending on where you're going (and how high maintenance you like to be beforehand in order to be low maintenance while you're there), you may want to get a spray tan , wax, and, of course, manicure. Picking out your vacation nails can often set the mood for your entire trip. Nothing pops against a tropical backdrop like a bright, mood-boosting color or wearing a trendy nail design to a new city of your choice.

When searching for vacation nail ideas, Instagram is your bible. Whether you're a maximalist or a minimalist with your beauty choices, you'll find no shortage of inspiration. The design you choose largely depends on where you're going and the time of year. Your typical beach vacation nails may include seashells or fun vacation nail colors of neons and pastels.

If you want something a little less on the nose and classy vacation nail designs are more your vibe, there are plenty of options for you outside of your stereotypical choices. French manicures , for example, are super popular right now and make for great vacation nail art depending on the color you use, and "aura nails" basically scream holiday. "Digital lavender" nails and chrome are also great for anyone who doesn't like nail art.

For extra-long trips, you may want to consider picking a design with a neutral base — this will help disguise new growth and keep your manicure looking fresh for longer. Most varieties of french tips are great for this (minus the "inverted" french , which has color along the cuticle), as are ombré gradients and negative-space designs.

No matter where and when you're going, ahead you'll find a variety of vacation nail ideas to inspire your pick at the salon.

Mismatched Vacation Nails

If you can't make up your mind on what design to get, consider opting for a mismatched manicure that showcases your personality.

Seashell Vacation Nails

For beach vacation nails but with a twist, try seashell nail art. Nature provides the best beauty inspiration, and this set proves that. Each fingertip mirrors the unique shape and texture of a shell.

Neon Vacation Nails

Neon hues practically make any manicure feel vacation-worthy. This set is reminiscent of the ocean, with designs that mimic coral and seaweed.

Desert Vacation Nails

Not every vacation is at the beach — if you're headed somewhere like the desert, this set may be perfect for you. Using pastel colors, it has pictures of the sun, cactus, and landscapes.

Tropical Vacation Nails

Remember those tropical flowers you used to get on a single accent nail in the early aughts? Add them to a full set for a fun, nostalgic manicure.

Rainbow Vacation Nails

Incorporating rainbow colors into any nail-art design of your choice is an easy way to make a manicure feel vacation-ready.

Flower Vacation Nails

Flower nails can be worn in a variety of ways. This manicure combines the delicate design with french tips.

Aura Vacation Nails

Aura nails scream vacation, between the bright colors and the effortlessly cool design.

Digital Lavender Vacation Nails

Digital lavender nails are a great option for anyone looking for a fun manicure without going too heavy on nail art.

Cherry Vacation Nails

Cherry nails are so sweet for vacation. Pairing the design with a neutral base allows you to wear it for weeks.

Chrome Vacation Nails

French manicures are always a good choice, no matter the time of year or occasion. To dress up the design even more for vacation, opt for a chrome finish on the tips.

Geometric Vacation Nails

If you're not vacationing on the beach, geometric nail designs may be more fitting for your trip.

Abstract Vacation Nails

You don't need to have a clear idea of what you want your vacation nails to be. Sometimes, abstract shapes in complementary colors make for the best manicures.

Glazed-Doughnut Vacation Nails

Not a big fan of eye-catching nail art? Take a cue from the queen of minimal nails herself, Hailey Bieber, and get a glazed-doughnut manicure (in the color of your choice) for your vacation nails.

Jade Vacation Nails

Jade nails are a cool, effortless choice for anyone looking for a vacation manicure that's not too on theme.

Swirl Vacation Nails

Swirl nails are one of those designs that are what you make of them — you can combine your favorite colors or switch with a theme, like neons or pastels.

The 23 Nail Art Trends That Are Taking Off in Europe This Summer

nails for trip to italy

@amy_lawrenson

In This Article

I've got into a rather expensive habit of twice-monthly gel mani appointments with nail art—the sort of nail art I usually just save to my Instagram boards but don't actually do anything with. What I have noticed from spending time in my local nail salon, Lakwerk in Amsterdam, is that there isn't really one overriding mani trend in the Netherlands right now. I wondered whether this was a specific Amsterdam-specific trend for, well, shunning the trends or whether it is happening all over Europe? So, I called on the team at Pinterest to get some insights on the nail trends that are booming across the European continent. And, it turns out, they are pretty varied within each country and cross-border too.

The team at Pinterest told me that they're seeing women using Pinterest to search for nail shape inspiration, with long pointed stiletto nails big news in Spain and ballerina nails long but with a flat end trending over the border in Portugal.

Pinners in Europe seem to be going back to basics, with natural nails trending in France and simple nail designs being searched for in Germany.

When it comes to specific colors, Europeans are, on the whole, keeping it classic, with red trending in France, pink in Italy, milky white in Portugal and nude in the UK. Breaking free from the classic looks, however, is Sweden, where neon nails are the top search.

Keep scrolling to see the top nail trends in eight European countries and click the search terms for endless Pinterest inspiration.

Ombre Nails = 108% increase in searches

Nude Nails = 37% increase in searches

Marble Nails = 46% increase in searches

Baby Boomer Nails = 339% increase in searches

It's All About Italy

DOs and DON’Ts for Italian Summertime Style

With summer almost here and your next Italian vacation right around the corner, its time to talk fashion. This sunny season in Italy can call for a quiet beach vacation to a week in Rome exploring mounds of history. Whatever the reason for your next trip to Italy it’s important to look great and experience fashion- the Italian way.

We have previously told you how to dress in Italy during the summer, now its time to explain how to avoid those fashion faux pas.

For all you ladies out there…The rumor is true: Italians treasure their appearance and la bella figura . So this summer in Italy is finally the time to channel your inner fashionista and try your best hand at becoming a real Italian.

So take notes and enjoy our  DOs and DON’Ts for Italian Summertime Style :

italian summertime

DOs & DON’Ts For Her

  • Do Bring a Fun, Summer Dress. Dresses are perfect for day and night and ideal to wear during the hot summer months. Put on a pair of heels or ballet flats to add to your look while keeping it classy the Italian way. If you’ll be spending the day touring, remember a light cardigan to cover your shoulders for entrance into churches or air-conditioned restaurants.
  • Do Accessorize. Italians love to accessorize, with one of their favorites being scarves. Scarves can be seen and sold year-round all over Italy. Bring your favorite cotton scarf from home or purchase many more at various vintage stores and vendors to add a pop of color to your wardrobe. Perfectly painted nails are a must and throw on those much-loved earrings to complete any look.
  • Don’t Wear Shorts. Although summer in Italy can be rather hot, you’ll rarely see Italian women wearing shorts. The best way to fit in would be to stay away from revealing too much skin, but still look stylish at the same time- try a flowy skirt instead. But if you just can’t part with your shorts, save them as a beach cover up.
  • Don’t Bring Flip-Flops.  Italians can spot an American from a mile away; because, well, they are wearing flip-flops. And yes, this is a real thing, Italian’s just don’t wear flip-flops. While in Italy it is important to steer away from these types of shoes, especially if you will be in a big city like, Florence or Milan visiting churches or museums all day. A better way to “keep it classy” would be to wear a strappy, or classier pair of sandals that won’t make you feel out-of-place in those sacred sanctuaries.

DOs & DON’Ts For Him

Ok boys…Now is your time to shine, and Italian men know how to dress. Time to step up the competition, and no, this doesn’t mean you need to step off the plane wearing a suit, although that would look nice.

italian summertime

  • Do Wear Jeans (and the tighter the better) . Italian men are known to rock a nice pair of jeans for almost any occasion. Jeans are perfect from day to night and can be easily worn with a t-shirt or sport coat. But if you’re really looking to become a authentic Italian man- time to get your hands on a pair of manpris (man capris).
  • Do Remember a Collared Shirt.  You will most often find Italian men wearing a collared or button down shirt, usually with a v-neck sweater tied around their shoulders. This is a great look for an evening out on the town, dinner, or touring. Don’t forget to add a great pair of sunglasses swoon all those ladies out there.
  • Don’t Bring Athletic Shorts. If you’re looking to adapt to the Italian dress code, athletic shorts won’t make the cut. Italian men would prefer to dress fairly business casual for their day-to-day activities. But if you can’t live without the comfort of your favorite shorts, bring them to the beach instead.
  • Don’t Pack Shirts With Writing.  When traveling to Italy its important to leave behind those beloved sports t-shirts, your favorite college hoodie, or even those shirts with designs on it. You will scream “tourist” and stick out in any crowd (but not in a good way). If you truly can’t skip a day without the relaxed laid back look of your t-shirt collection, purchase a few v-neck shirts instead, which will be great for your day-to-day travels and can easily be dressed up at night.

Dressing to impress in Italy really can make a difference. Respecting the customs and traditions while you become immersed in the Italian culture allows you to jump right in to feel and act like a real Italian. Plus you’ll look great in all those pictures!

16 travel-inspired nail art designs to try before your next holiday

By Kelsey Kissane

Image may contain Human Person Manicure and Nail

Gearing up for a holiday is always exciting, but it involves extra prep for all the beauty lovers out there. For them, getting ready also means packing the most-used makeup and skincare products in travel sizes, last minute blow-dries and hair colour jobs and, of course—a salon trip to get your nails ready with a holiday-themed nail art. Whether you get a fresh manicures all year long or save it for special occasions—like for when you're traveling—holiday nail art designs are the best way to get excited for your upcoming vacation. From beaches and cities to flags, there is no limit to the varieties available out there. Say au revoir to boring paint jobs and browse through our selection of cheerful Instagram nail art designs that will make your digits picture-perfect for all those Instagram posts you plan to put up under the Eiffel Tower, or on a sunny, sandy beach.

Nail art designs based on your type of destination

When it comes to choosing your travel nail art design, focusing on the type of destination is your easiest and safest bet. If you are headed to a cruise, try a nautical-themed nail art design. From anchors and navy stripes to sailboats and whales, there's a plethora of options to choose from. You can take a preppy theme, or stick to a feminine look with pastel blues and purples, and elevate it with mermaid scales and gems. Beach-goers can try muted-forest green palm trees or seashells to showcase their love for the sun and sand, while those headed to a golfing trip can say fore to painted grass-green and white nails . Headed to a ski trip in Switzerland? Embrace the winters with gorgeous cold weather nail art designs—they can feature simple snowflakes, or even elaborate glitter snow drawings. Safari lovers can look to dessert or safari animals drawn on the nails in vibrant colours, or black and white with green glitter  to complement their travel wardrobe.

Location-specific nail art designs

Should you choose to, you can even flaunt your next destination with your  nail art design . If you're headed to Paris, get the Eiffel tower painted on your nails, and couple it with a pink floral design. And nothing says New York City like a nail art design of a silhouette of the city. Or choose Hello Kitty for a Japan trip, since you will see the cute character everywhere while walking around the most popular cities. For a place like Hawaii, go with pineapples and the word Aloha, for a fun take on the tropical island vibes.

Nail art designs with the country flag

Nothing shows the place you're headed to as boldly as a nail art design of the country's flag. The British flag in particular has bold colours of red and blue, and when paired with glitter, it really pops out on the hands. Or try the Italian flag in a nail art design of colour-blocked stripes of white, green and red for a week of love in the wine country.

What Do People Wear in Italy?

Fashion in Italy is the same as other parts of the world. There are a variety of Italian attire style preferences to reflect the tastes of different personalities.

With the popularity of athleisure, over the years Italian fashion along with that of other European countries , has become more “casual”, not to be confused with gym clothing.

However, casual or any other clothing in Italy generally tends to differ from some countries in the sense that people wear items that are fitted to their bodies. A tailored look is the true secret to the Italian everyday fashion observed by visitors.

As with most destinations, practical sense applies. Leave the beachwear for the beach because it doesn’t translate well to streetwear in a city. Unless you’re actually headed to the gym, you may want to consider not wearing gym attire.

While it’s not uncommon to wonder what do Italians wear , it’s also important to remember that the best clothing to pack on any trip is what makes you feel most comfortable, both physically and emotionally.

What’s important is that you choose clothing when you travel that makes you feel good when you look in the mirror because confidence is key to style in Italy and everywhere else.

Insiders do note that Italy’s clothing style may vary from the north to the south and between generations.

  • Rome and the south may be considered to be more traditional with local trends.
  • In Venice , the weather might dictate the clothing over trends, especially when it rains.
  • Milan and the north, locals may have a very fashionable and sometimes over-the-top style, particularly when it comes to fashion week.
  • Overly-revealing clothing isn’t recommended when entering religious buildings.

What are the best shoes for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets. They’re BRUTAL when you’re on your feet sightseeing all day. Choose form and function over fashion!

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Popular shoe options include (click each item below for suggested styles):

  • Ankle Boots for spring and autumn
  • Ballet Flats and Loafers to dress up or for warm weather
  • Waterproof Boots for rain and snow
  • Comfortable Sightseeing shoes for year round visits
  • Cute Comfortable Summer Sandals
Read this post about how to choose the best walking shoes for Europe .

Popular cities like Venice or Rome are made for walking, so be sure to choose comfortable shoes . Consider waterproof leather boots for the colder months and simple, comfortable, canvas shoes for the warmer months.

Locals like to dine out with style and elegance so you may want to consider bringing some slightly dressier shoes if that suits your style. When deciding what to wear when traveling to Italy, avoid heels because they’ll leave you feeling uncomfortable.

What Should I Wear in Italy?

The most important factors in planning what you should and shouldn’t wear to Italy are your activities and the weather .

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Nothing will ruin your trip faster than being unprepared with the wrong clothing for the weather.

Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a capsule travel wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Below you’ll find helpful seasonal clothing tips and suggested packing lists with capsule wardrobe ideas that you can use as a guideline to prepare for a trip to Italy:

What to Wear in Italy in Spring

What is the weather in italy in spring (march, april, may).

Italian spring is beautiful–you can spot flowers and green everywhere. Spring may be considered the best season to plan a trip to Italy, as the temperatures are more moderate and the crowds lighter when compared to summer.

Spring in Italy can be unpredictable. The temperatures can vary from chilly to warm and sometimes even hot, from a minimum of 15°C/59°F to a maximum of 28°C/82°F. When it rains, and during early morning hours, the temperature can go down to 10°C/50°F. Checking the weather forecast before any trip is always recommended.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in Spring?

With fluctuating weather in the months of spring, layers are an absolute must! For example, what to wear in Italy in May will be different from what to wear in Italy in April.

Always choose 10 to 15 items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested spring Italy packing list below.)

Look for bright and light colors during this finicky season; when it’s sunny, it’s very warm. Jeans are a good choice or skirts in light fabrics.

Match your bottoms with a quality tee or pretty blouse, and don’t forget a sweater and light jacket for layering on cold days and evenings. Bring a waterproof outerwear item, such as a light trench coat, for unexpected rainstorms.

Choose one of these stylish travel raincoats for women to keep you dry!

Accessories always make an outfit but some may choose to avoid expensive jewelry or sunglasses. Consider bringing a sunhat for hot days.

What shoes should I wear in Italy in spring?

As with your clothes, plan your shoes based on the weather and your planned activities. Choose no more than two to three pairs of shoe in neutral colors that can mix and match with all your clothing. We suggest comfortable sightseeing shoes , activity shoes, and a second pair of sightseeing shoes if you’ll be experiencing mixed weather.

Make sure your sightseeing shoes are broken-in properly. Opt for a pair that is comfortable and you can wear it for hours without discomfort.

Popular sightseeing styles include sneakers ( Supergas tend to be a popular option) or waterproof shoes. Note that the best waterproof shoes are not made out of rubber; instead choose leather ankle boots , which are the best shoe option for travel to Europe in spring.

While not recommended for all day sightseeing, ballet flats , loafers , or boots can be good options should you want a dressier pair of shoes on your trip. Alternatively, bring closed toe wedges if you prefer a shoe with a heel.

What to Wear in Italy in Summer

What is the weather in italy in summer (june, july, august).

Summer in Italy is insanely hot: temperatures can reach 35°C/ 95°F or higher. Not only is the heat strong but the air can feel muggy and humid. Tropical-type showers may occur in some areas such as Venice . For example, what to wear in Italy in June will be pretty similar to your July and August wardrobe.

Be careful to protect yourself during the hottest hours of the day by wearing sunblock and a sun hat .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in summer?

When deciding how to dress in Italy in the summer, dress comfortably with loose and light clothes. Light dresses might be the most comfortable this time of year, particularly in places such as Rome where the heat can feel unbearable.

Skirts , cropped trousers , (dressy) shorts with a nice top or a dressy blouse and a hat will complete the look.

Choose light colored clothing to avoid scorching in the blaring heat. Cotton, linen , and rayon fabrics are best.

Make sure you’re not wearing revealing clothing when you visit religious sites. Covered shoulders and below the knee clothing is recommended but not enforced. While you may not be stopped from entering the Vatican or St Mark’s

Basilica, it’s respectful to follow local traditions. Opt for a midi or maxi dress below your knees and a light wrap that you can place around your shoulders if wearing a sleeveless top.

Planning to visit religious sites? Find out what to wear to the Vatican and other religious buildings!

Always choose ten-fifteen items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. (See suggested summer Italy packing list below.)

What to Wear in Italy in Fall

What is the weather in italy in fall (september, october, november).

Autumn does not differ much from spring. Temperatures fluctuate from 15°C/59°F to 24°C/75°F and it rains quite a lot, so what to wear in Italy in September will be different than what to wear in Italy in October. In the plains in the north of Italy, you can experience foggy days, which are quite fascinating in cities like Venice or Milan .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in fall?

In September and autumn, you should pack the same items mentioned in the spring section above. These two seasons are similar and the only variations may be an umbrella and trench coat . Layers are essential especially as the weather begins to cool.

The key colors of the season are brown, purple, gray, and black, but you can always choose lighter colors to provide relief from warmer weather.

When in doubt, plan a monochrome travel wardrobe consisting of mostly black, a stunning handbag, and silk printed scarf.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Rather than Google search “dress Italy,” follow our guide on how to choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested fall Italy packing list below.)

What to Wear in Italy in Winter

What is the weather in italy in winter (december, january, february).

As mentioned before, winters can be quite cold. In the north, it snows a lot and sometimes it’s difficult to move around the city without slipping. The south is warmer but it snows at least once a year. Temperatures range from 10°C/50°F down to -8°C/18°F. And where the climate is humid, it’s colder–you can feel it in your bones.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in winter?

Pack a pair of warm gloves , a thick scarf , and a hat . If you are planning to go to the north, I suggest a padded winter coat and layer of merino wool thermals , too.

In the south, you can take a winter coat or a quilted jacket. The rule in winter is to dress in layers as temperatures might change during the day, so pack some long-sleeve tops, warm sweaters , and cardigans .

A waterproof rain jacket can be useful, but I would suggest taking an umbrella, as it is more handy and fashionable.

The secret to packing light in winter is thermal underwear for women – these are a must!

What is the Best Luggage for Italy?

So the hard part’s out of the way; after much turmoil you’ve finally perfected your travel wardrobe and created a chic capsule collection – now it’s time to get packing! Which luggage will work best for you?

what-to-wear-in-italy

Travelpro Maxlite 5 19″ Softside Expandable Luggage | Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage

There are various things to consider when choosing the best luggage for Europe including a difference in carry on size, strict weight restrictions, mobility on the cobblestone streets, and long flights of stairs.

The best suitcase to have when traveling Italy can be a personal choice. Some prefer a hardside suitcase or softsuide suitcase , but it’s best to choose something between 19” to 20” for most European airlines, and ideally with four castors. The suitcase should be divided into two compartments (not just one big compartment) for easy packing. These are easy to travel with on bumpy terrain.

what-to-wear-in-italy

Tumi Voyageur Celina Laptop Backpack | Baggallini Avenue Tote Top Handle Bag

The best international carry on luggage can also entail your personal onboard item. The allowed personal item carry on size is generally 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. When choosing a personal item , ensure it has sufficient organizational compartments for your flight essentials, including an area for your devices, like a tablet or laptop.

For a European carry on size bag, a backpack is always a safe option. It’s also the perfect fit for those of us who prefer to travel hands-free.

Compass Rose Compression Packing Cubes

Depending on how many days or weeks you’re traveling, you may want to use luggage organizers such as packing cubes , which allow optimum use of the space in your luggage, keeping everything organized and in place during your travels, and making the task of unpacking and repacking simple and stress-free.

As you’re headed to fashionable Europe, use an equally stylish carry-on , such as the Osprey Ozone , which is a personal favorite. Keep in mind that most of Europe’s budget airlines have a carry-on bag allowance of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Always check your airlines individual baggage rules and regulations in advance.

A last thing to remember about luggage is that moving from plane to train or bus means there will be moments you won’t be with your suitcase. A wise security measure is to use a luggage tracking device . The Apple Airtags are highly popular for iPhone users and can be monitored through your Find My app, while Android users swear by the Galaxy SmartTag . Another popular one is the TilePro luggage tracker which works with both iOS and Android.

When traveling to Italy, you’ll need some of the standard, essential toiletries, including:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Moisturizer (face and body)
  • Makeup (we recommend keeping it simple: mascara, concealer, and a lip tint that doubles as a blush)
  • Hair ties and bobby pins
  • Dry shampoo

Worried that all your toiletries, makeup, skincare, and hair styling tools won’t fit into your suitcase? Read these tips on how to travel size toiletries to learn how to make the most of limited space without sacrificing your routine!

We recommend you take the most important products in travel containers like these and try to either buy basics like shampoo and shower gel in Europe or use the items provided by hotels.

Also, consider your makeup–in many European cities, women opt for natural makeup focusing on a well groomed but not over-the-top appearance.

While a daily salon blow out isn’t necessary, be mindful of your hair and makeup. Find out if it’s necessary to bring a travel blow dryer here .

When choosing your styling tools, choose items that have dual voltage and bring along a travel adapter for all your electronics. Just make sure to add all these items to your backpacking packing list for Europe so you don’t forget them.

Check out our guide to toiletries for more tips!

What Should I NOT Pack for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets.

In addition, there is an Italian dress code in churches and other religious centers. You should cover your shoulders with a shawl or scarf, and wear bottoms that cover your knees.

Are jeans appropriate to wear in Italy?

While Europeans tend to dress up more than Americans, you still can wear jeans in Italy. However, avoid acid wash and extremely distressed denim and opt for medium-dark blues and blacks. Black skinny jeans always look chic in Europe!

Are leggings okay to wear in Italy?

Some travelers love wearing leggings for comfort, but they’re often too casual looking as pants for Italy. If you’re a big fan of leggings, consider pairing a black pair with long tunics during the spring, or wearing them under dresses and skirts in fall and winter.

What are the Best Shoes to Wear in Italy?

Based on reader recommendations, we suggest tall boots for winter and wedges for summer; other styles can be used interchangeably throughout the year.

Depending on the weather, flat ankle boots , boat shoes, or driving mocs are other top recommendations amongst our readers. They’re classic options and make the perfect alternative to ballet flats , especially if you need a little more room for soft insoles.

Italy Travel Tips

Before you head on your tour of Italy , check out these frequently asked questions on traveling to Italy.

What’s the best time of year to visit Italy?

Italy is a wonderful destination to visit year round but many agree that Spring is the best time to visit Italy. You’ll experience less crowds and moderate weather in comparison to summer when it’s scorching hot and busy.

Note that some places close in August for the local vacation period.

Weather in Italy

As you plan your packing list for Italy, keep in mind that the north is normally cold in winter and warm and humid in summer. Cities located on a higher altitude are more windy and cold, but you can enjoy a summer heat, thanks to the sun.

The south is characterized for being warmer, year-round. In some areas, it doesn’t even snow! Rome and the south are very hot in the summer 35°C/95°F (May-September), but it can be enjoyable thanks to the sea breeze. Winters are warmer and not as cold, with better weather than in the north.

Never travel without checking the weather forecast as this will be your ultimate packing guide for Italy. Remember that each city will have its own weather pattern so check the forecast for all the destinations you plan to visit.

Use websites such as Accuweather or Holiday Weather for advanced forecasts and don’t forget to check the weather one week and three days before your trip as mother nature doesn’t run on a tight schedule.

Sunglasses are a must every season; the sun seemingly never stops shining on the Italian peninsula.

What are the best accommodations in Italy?

We love Airbnb for accommodation in Italy. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these Airbnb tips for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel? Read this.

Transportation

For flights, I like booking through Travelocity or Cheapoair (whichever one’s cheapest). Although I prefer Travelocity because they have a 24 hour money back guarantee.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

How do I get around Italy?

Italy has several great transportation options that make it easy for you to get around Italy and hop from city to city. Train is one of the most popular options for traveling from one region to another. Seat61 is an excellent website offering extensive train travel tips for destinations around the world including Italy train travel.

Trenitalia operates three different high-speed rail options, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa, and you can easily book tickets or look at schedules online at Trenitalia . You can also use ItaliaRail if booking for more than one person as the multiple booking option seems to give better rates than Trenitalia.

In Venice and when traveling to Sardinia or Sicily, you can take a water taxi or boat, which run regularly and are affordable.

You can also rent a car or vespa to travel within cities. Just keep in mind that the streets are very narrow and traffic can be intense, so if you’re not used to driving in Europe, you’re better off opting for a bus, metro, train, or boat.

Things to Do in Italy

Italy is one of the most amazing countries to visit because there are so many beautiful cities to see and sites to take in. Follow our recommendations before you travel to Italy .

What are the best sites in Italy to see?

  • Trevi Fountain
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa
  • St Mark’s Square
  • Florence Duomo
  • Amalfi Coast
  • Cinque Terre

What are the best tours in Italy?

Some travelers prefer the guidance of professionals for planning their trip. If you’re a fan of tours, check out these top tours for Italy.

Where’s the best shopping in Italy?

If you find you have left behind an essential, or need to add to add classic Italy clothes to your travel wardrobe, don’t panic. Italy is the cradle of fashion and all of the biggest brands are located in every city. Stores like H&M and Zara are highly fashionable, with a wide range of clothes.

Italian department stores such as Coin and La Rinascente can be handy when looking for quality items. You can also find designer outlet stores in major shopping destinations, too! Before shopping, see what others are wearing on the streets to capture Italian street fashion.

Safety is a big concern whenever you travel, and in busy, touristy areas like major cities in Italy, pickpocketing can be a common occurrence. Taking a few safety precautions can help you feel less stressed during your travels.

How can I stay safe while traveling in Italy?

Be cautious about where you stash your cash so you don’t fall prey to muggings and pickpocketing. Make your clothing theft-proof and choose items with strong zippers. Jeans are handy for this reason: you can put important items, like your wallet and phone, in your front pockets, where it’s very difficult for a wandering hand to snatch it. Add items like the Secret Bra Pocket and Underwear with Pockets to your packing list.

And be mindful of purse snatchers! They either slash the bottom of your bag so the content fall out or slash the strap. Wear your purse strap across your body and the zipper towards the front. For extra security, check out the “theft-proof” bags featured in this post about crossbody purses .

Remember, the safest place for your passport is locked in your accommodation. Carry a photocopy or other ID when you’re sightseeing or are out at night.

Read these tips on how to keep your passport safe when you travel!

Suggested Anti-Theft Accessories for Italy

  • Bra stash , neck pouch , or money belt with RFID protection
  • Anti-theft crossbody bag
  • Passport case
  • TSA-approved luggage lock
  • Clothing with hidden pockets (like underwear , tops , and scarves )

Key Takeaways:

  • In general day-to-day European style is more dressy than American style, but this does not mean business clothing. A nice blouse and well-tailored denim is a timeless uniform that can work in Italy just as well as any other part of Europe.
  • Ultimately, choose comfortable, classic clothing that will transcend trends so you can look back at the pictures from your trip with fond memories.
  • With shoes, always choose comfort over fashion as you’ll spend long hours on your feet – don’t forget to break them in!
  • Elevators are not prevalent in local accommodation; be prepared to lift your own luggage up many flights of stairs and steep cobblestone hills.
  • Avoid oversized, heavy luggage if you plan to use trains, buses, or budget flights as storage space is limited. You should be able to maneuver through train stations (and trains) with ease.
  • Pickpockets are prevalent in all tourist cities, be aware of your surroundings and be practical about your belongings.
  • ALWAYS check the weather before you travel.

This packing list was my EVERYTHING for my September 2021 4-week trip to Italy for which I successfully packed carryon only!! I followed these recommendations to a T and even purchased many of the recommended items (sandals, sneakers, tops, Anatomie pants) and they worked wonderfully!! Thank you for such comprehensive and helpful guide!!

Jenn D.

Thank you so much for this list!!! We are planning on going to Italy for 10 days this coming year and I am planning on just packing a carry-on!

Alex

Have an amazing time Jenn!

Dear Alex, I could really use your expert help! I’m a 60 year old fashion forward man, well traveled in Italy and typically for a month, and only take carry-on luggage. All of your advice to others above is spot on! My upcoming 2-month trip (mid-Mar to Mid-May’22 – half by car/half trains) is creating a clothing dilemma for me as I’m traveling from cold to warm, early spring to late spring, formal to informal and multi-country. Month 1: Milan-Verona-Bologna/Emilia Romagna region; Month 2: Menton FR-Aix-Bordeaux-Bilboa, SP-Barcelona-home/USA. I like to blend in and I’ve always been able to stay in the gray/black color scheme so everything goes with everything. But other than Milan/Verona, this trip feels more like lighter colors (mid-blues/blacks/whites) are in order. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Hi Jim, thank you for reaching out!

For tips to help you pack for the mixed weather, check out this guide: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-guide-to-packing-for-different-climates/

We always recommend that for any destination, so long as you’re dressed appropriately for the weather, the culture, and your planned activities, your aim should always be to dress for your personal comfort level vs trying to blend in. For help with your packing also check out this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Hope this helps. Have the most amazing time in Italy! ?

It will be me, my husband, mother in law and uncle and aunt in law travelling this year in late July 18 days. Super excited but it has been many years since I traveled in Europe. Your tips are so helpful and appreciated. We are also going to be on a 7 day cruise from Rome to Venice so we must pack for both

Any tips you can provide are appreciated. I have read through about 20 different articles you have on your site. SUPER helpful

I didn’t see a lot of mention on shorts. In places like sightseeing in Pompeii is it acceptable? On shorts are the shorter denim with the appearance of wear or tears appropriate?

Hi Samantha, thank you for reaching out! Our 10 step guide to Europe may be a good place to start planning your packing: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ For dressing appropriately for sightseeing, particularly when visiting churches, have a read of this: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-to-the-vatican/ For the best advice, I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions, like wearing shorts around Pompeii, there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and travel tips and Italy is a popular destination so they will be able to help you with your questions. Deejay

We are going to Athens, Santorini start of September then the across to Italy for 3 weeks from 9th September. I have downloaded your packing list to help me get started. I closer to 60 so just trying to work out suitable clothing for both destinations. I think I will just need light clothing for Greece and most of Italy.

Hi Deejay, the best place to start planning your packing may be to have a look at our 10 step guide to Europe: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guide-europe/ Light clothes are fantastic especially if the weather will be particularly warm. The best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Also have a look at our articles which are written for people of an older generation: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/over-40-fashion/ You may find some ideas and suggestions you like! Have the most incredible time on your trip!! 🙂

Jessica

Just came across your post and plan to go to Italy in spring 2019. Your packing list looks great. I am going for 12 days, how many days is your list for?

Hi Jessica, here is a helpful guide that explains more about how to use our packing lists: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-the-travel-fashion-girl-packing-lists-and-guides/ The vacation packing lists are for indefinite travel. Generally speaking, you can pack enough for one week then do laundry and/or replenish toiletries once a week for the duration of your trip. You can also adapt it as needed. Hope that helps. Have a wonderful trip!!

Rachel

A scarf was a MUST for me. I could throw it over my shoulders when visiting churches and then toss it in my bag afterwards.

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your travel essential for Italy with us! 🙂

Anne

I was just in Northern Italy last week. Polo shirts are very popular with Italian men. Guys 30 and under wear shorts but those older do not in the cities. Metallic or beaded sneakers were popular with women and in store windows.

Hi Anne, thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us! Hope you had an amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

Sylwia

I am going to Italy in April for the first time and your blog helps me a lot! It looks like my shopping won’t be too much of stress as Italian style is quite casual yet smart which I like. Besides that, I won’t stand out in the crowd! Thanks a lot! 🙂

Liz

Visiting Italy in May and basically fell in love with “Dress 1” on your list for spring packing, but the link isn’t right for SheIn and I can’t find it on their website. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean they’re not selling it! I have been looking for something relaxed and comfortable like that!

Hi Liz, thank you for reaching out! Dress 1 on the spring packing list is the Missufe Women’s Runched Casual Sundress which you can find here: https://amzn.to/2HTAVoK If you were referring to another dress, please let me know? Hope this helps. Have the most amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

I am off to Italy next summer for a foodie tour and your packing list will be a great help as i will be moving from place to place everyday.

This is an awesome website that I stumbled upon!!! My daughter and I will be taking a trip to Italy from July 10-20, 2017. We will be with a group of 64 from her school in Michigan, USA, and traveling from Milan to Capri, Italy. Six out of the ten nights we will be in a different city. Is there any advice you can give us so we get the most out of our packing and travels…What to bring, what not to bring…What types of clothing we will be most comfortable in? We are thinking a lot of maxi dresses/sundresses or skirts. What types of shoes for hiking and walking (plus they have to look stylish)? We know we will need a light cover for shoulders in holy places. We will be toting our luggage each day so I’d like to pack as little as I can and get the most out of our space and wardrobe. ANY advice you can give us would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Maureen Mansoor

Hi there. My sister and I are going to be in Italy from May 26 to June 12, 2017 starting in Venice then going to Florence, Rome and lastly Sorrento to take in the Amalfi Coast. Since this is kind of on the cusp of Spring and Summer we are unsure of what to take. Also I have read that shorts are not widely worn in Italy; what about a white denim skirt which is mid thigh? Also I am wondering if it is appropriate to wear distressed jeans i.e. with factory tears in the fabric in Italy? What about white denim pants or capris at that time of the year? Is it too early? Thanks so much for your help!!

I forgot to mention that we are two women in our 60’s.

Marian Fornieles

Very interesting article and very original. I went last weekend with my husband to Rome and this article was very useful!

Lauren W.

Your articles are helping me so much to “pack smart!” We are headed to Venice, Rome, and Florence in early March. Should I try to combine the winter and spring wardrobes for predicted weather in the 40-50 degree Fahrenheit range? Do you have any new items you would add to the Spring recommendations? Thanks!!

alex

Hi Lauren, the best way to plan is to keep an eye on the extended weather forecast closer to your trip. Here is a post that can offer you more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/

After having been in Bologna for around 4 months now, since August (summer), I can’t say I’ve really paid attention to what people are wearing. Contrary to (probably popular) belief, I wouldn’t say Italians dress over-the-top / always-in-fashion — or if they have, I just didn’t notice it? I felt like everyone dresses pretty “normally”, i.e., I’ve never really had a problem with what I’ve worn. EXCEPT:

I do recall feeling a taaaaad out-of-place during the summer, with my sleeveless top and shorts (not even that short, mind you). I could totally tell that those who were in shorts were almost all tourists. (Then again, it was Ferragosto, which is basically a month-long holiday during August, so there weren’t many locals around to begin with.) But, at the same time, I think there were those of the younger (i.e., my) generation Italians who would wear shorts too. Although, if you want to visit any of the churches, I’m saying it now: No shorts / sleeveless. 😛

Thanks for the feedback Dominique! Very helpful! Thanks for reading!

Annie

Hi I am from the Caribbean and will be traveling to Venice for a business conference next week. What should I pack for this trip is it ok to pack business skirt suits?

Absolutely! Whatever makes you comfortable! Especially in Venice you can be as stylish or simple as you’d like! Wear what makes you feel great! Enjoy your trip!

Marlene Cavagnuolo

We are going to Naples, tour of Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, and Capri last week of April; Sicily, tours of Siracusa and Mt Etna (not hiking) first week of May. We are staying in four star hotels and using private drivers for transportation and tours. My questions: Jacket – leather and/or lined waterproof rain jacket? Shoes for evening – booties or chunky heeled sandals? Thanks!

It can be quite rainy in that region at that time of year, so if you choose a leather jacket, I would definitely pack an umbrella! And booties may be better for the temperature! Thanks for the comment!

Amy RC

This is so helpful! I’ve been stressing over what to wear in the fall. Thanks for covering all seasons!

Jill

I’m going to central Italy in 4 weeks, and this is very helpful. Shoes are the hardest thing to find! I can’t wear flats for lack of proper support, so I think I’ve finally found some clog-type shoes that are really comfy to wear for excursions – though not very pretty. Still looking for something light that doesn’t make me look dowdy. And something I can actually afford.

Glad we could help Jill! Sounds like an awesome trip! Enjoy!

mildred

Hello! Need advise on what to pack for honeymoon to Italy in November, thanks.

There are some great options in this post Mildred! Hope you found it helpful!

Hi Alex going to Sorrento on the 30th of September , should I follow summer packing ? .

The best thing would be to check the weather forecast prior to traveling in order to determine the corresponding clothing to bring. You might also like this article: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Have a great trip!

Taylor

Hi there! I will be going to Florence, Venice, and Rome from December 23-Jan 3 and I am trying to figure out what shoes to bring. I am leaning towards booties/heels for night time and a pair of oxfords for day time exploring the cities, but I’m not sure if oxfords will be warm enough. Also I will be celebrating my 21st birthday while I am there and was wondering what people would usually where when going out for drinks at night?

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Taylor, thanks for your question! The most important thing to remember is to find something that you feel comfortable in that makes you feel special for your birthday! I am actually going to post your question on our Facebook Page to get you more insight, so make sure to check back there so you don’t miss your questions! https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl

LOVE your posts! We’re traveling to Sorrento in mid October. I’ve planned an 8 day wardrobe around navy, white, red & gray. My shoe choices are strappy tan wedge sandals & top siders. Any other suggestions?

This sounds great 🙂 Nice work – For more ideas have a look at this post https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/

Thank you, these lists are so helpful!

You’re welcome 🙂 Glad you find them helpful!

Brittany

Is it still common in Italy (specifically, Venice or Cinque Terre) that restaurants don’t let you in without heels?

There are a few restaurants that have this rule, however many touristy places will let you in without heels. As with other places in Europe, comfortable shoes are always a must! Take a look at this article about shoes in Italy and what other readers think of heels http://bit.ly/28aU1LI

Faith

I’m leaving for Italy in a couple of days and will be there for a few weeks and would like to know if you recommend any good, yet fashionable, walking shoes. I’m not one who usually wears a canvas-type shoe and the one pair I do own no longer fits. Thank you!

Hi Faith 🙂 It depends what kind of activities you’ll be doing i.e. hiking or city walks but this guide could point you in the right direction – http://bit.ly/1rOuabK – Have a great time in Italy and good luck with the shoe hunt!

Julia

Absolutely awesome post. I only wish it came out sooner and that some items could be purchased from Canada

Hi Julia 🙂 Glad you liked the post! We’re posting daily on the site so keep checking back in to see if there is anything helpful to you 🙂

Verbana

I agree with another poster, shorts don’t belong on this list. You will never see Italians wear shorts unless they are children. Skirts, or capris.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for the tips, I used this for packing for Italy in the March, it helped so much.

That’s awesome Demra! We’re happy to help 🙂

king

what about for men?what to wear? we will be there on the second week of april. thanks

Hi King, we do have some tips in this post for men in summer but unfortunately, we don’t offer too many tips for men since it’s a website for women. Here are a few more packing tips for Europe (for men): https://travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Claire

I going to an outdoor wedding in June and its in Sorrento. What should I wear.

Thank you Claire

Hi Claire! This article gives you good insight on the vibe of Sorrento: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Plan to dress to impress 🙂

Kristina

Hi! I am going to Florence in mid March to visit friends studying abroad. What they have told me so far is that people in Florence dress in very neutral colors and kind of simple clothes. Is this true? I want to make sure I pack accordingly and don’t stand out as an American touristy looking person lol

Hi Kristina, sounds like an awesome study abroad experience. Europeans tend to dress in more classic styles choosing quality over quantity. The main difference is that women look great in even the most basic of outfit because they maintain a well-groomed appearance, wear tailored clothing that fits their body (not too big or too tight), and focus adding accents to a strong capsule wardrobe of versatile, neutral pieces. It’s not boring but more sophisticated – casual chic.

Take a look at these posts for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-to-live-or-work-abroad/

Have a great trip!

Cindi

I have not been to Italy in 15 years! There is no rule on having to wear dress/skirt or hair coverings when going in to churches any more ? Thx

I’ve been advised that you do still have to cover your shoulders and cover your knees when visiting a church.

jill

Hi im going to tuscany in october any help on what the weathef is likely to be and what to pack would be really helpful …im comfortable in flat pumps skinny jeans loose blouses silk scarfs and blazer will these be to warm any help appreciated x

Hi Jill, the best advice is to keep an eye on the weather on http://www.bbc.com/weather/ and for extended forecasts check out http://weather.com/

Your outfit sounds great so perhaps you can start off with that as a base and work around it: add a coat, scarf, and boots if the weather’s colder or don’t wear the blazer if it’s warm. Be prepared to layer during this time of year. These tips could also help: http://goo.gl/GjjCaY I’ll also post your question on our facebook page to get more feedback for you. https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Hope this helps!

T. French

I haven’t been to Milan since 2104, but will be there next month. Sounds like skinny jeans are still the way to go, correct?

It doesn’t seem that they’re going anywhere any time soon 😉

Bushor

Hi.. We are planning to visit Italy (milan) in the Christmas holiday.. What clothes and shoes shall i bring specially we are from warm country and coming with my little kids.

Hi Bushor, you can find out best tips on packing for Italy here http://goo.gl/IaDMDl We don’t have a specific guide for Milan so I’ll also share your question on Facebook this weekend. Keep an eye out for replies from other readers: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Thanks for posting!

I was in Rome 2 weeks ago , and I have searched every website looking for a paticular Italian clothing store on ether Via Frattina ViaVia Borgognona Walking down either street from the Spanish steps it is on the left hand side of the street near the top . It is a high end store only found in Italy with women clothing. Do you happen to know the name of it?

thank you for your help.

Hi Karen, have you tried using Google Maps? Here’s is what I found:

So excited to finally go overseas and Italy has been my dream. Will be in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and even Lugano, Switzerland. Do you think it will be better to pack boots, sneakers, loafers or sandals? I’m not sure how cold my feet will be.

very informative blog!love your website..just in time!have plans to go to rome italy with my friends by first week of november. should i follow autumn packing coz im not very sure what type of clothes to wear..we also have plans in visiting venice and milan..also, need your advice on what shoes to wear!do i need to bring extra?well be there for only 8 days..thanks so much for this article!

Hi there! Check out this guide for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ The best thing would be to check weather.com before your trip to determine the weather forecast and best packing list to follow. Hope you have fun!

Valentina Wurth

Great informative article on what to wear. I would absolutely caution not to wear flip flops unless you’re at the beach since you’ll immediately stand out as a tourist. As a far as revealing clothing, just make sure you always have a light jacket and I would avoid short shorts. Italians are bit more modest in their dress but they always layer and accessories. As long at you throw on a light blazer and a scarf you’ll look great.

Diana

My husband and I are planning on spending a few weeks in Italy late Sept/early October, these lists are wonderful! Also, thanks for posting a list for men, that’s very helpful. If we are doing a lot of sightseeing, would flat-soled leather boots be appropriate? I don’t want to wear tennis shoes everyday. Amazing blog, having fun getting ideas for my shopping list!

You got it right! That seems to be the best way to go in Europe especially as the weather starts turning. Have fun!

Debbie

I had the same question about going to several cities from Venice to Rome leaving the first of May. The last time I was there in May I got cold at night and was wondering if I could wear my flat black “riding” boots. They are so comfy to walk in but I don’t want to look out of place. I am also taking ballet flats for warmer days. Should I leave the boots or take them?

Hi Debbie. Great question! Ballet flats, boots (ankle, mid, or tall), and one additional pair sound like just the right type of shoes for Italy. I’ll also post your question on Facebook too. Check out this post on what shoes to wear in Italy: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-shoes-for-travel-to-italy-should-you-pack-your-heels/

Julie K

So happy I found your website! My dream vacation has been Italy for almost 30 years and I’m finally getting the chance to go next end of March/beginning of April! I’ll be hitting Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples over a 17 day period and I don’t know if I should pack for Spring with some warmth for Winter? And what kind of overcoat or coverup would you recommend? Will it rain a lot then?

I have so many questions and I’m so excited!!

Thanks again! Julie

Hi Julie, congrats on your dream vacation becoming a reality! These are some tips from the TFG readers on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/posts/670907509599587

Stephanie

Such a blessing that I found your blog! Going to Italy (Florence, Venice and Rome) for my 1 year wedding anniversary this upcoming December. I always overpack, and am really worried about fitting everything I need for 8 days in a carry-on luggage during the winter in Italy. Can I do it? Also, hearing about all the pickpocketing, what do you recommend for holding my money/cards, and my cell phone? Just trying to make sure I’m prepared! Thank you so much!

Hi Stephanie, Thanks for your comment and congrats on your wedding anniversary! This post will give you tips on theft proofing your gear: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-money-belts-and-anti-theft-travel-accessories/

I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get your more reader feedback 🙂

Thanks so much, Alex! I really, really appreciate it. I need all the help I can get! haha 🙂 I’ll definitely be checking back on your blog for any additional comments or help for any of my travels!

Hope you’re enjoying your current travels!

There’s tons of tips already! Check them out 🙂

Mimi

Love your website, follow you on instagram and facebook! 🙂 In two weeks I’m leaving for a 20 day trip that starts in Venice,Florence,Rome, Sicily (Palermo) and ends with four days in Paris. I tend to over pack always! (even for weekend trips!) Not sure if I should include more summer than Fall clothes? Thank you 🙂

Thank you Mimi for your compliments and following TFG 🙂 I’d say pack for Fall with a variety of clothing that you can layer. Always check the weather reports to your destinations first so you can plan as accurately as possible. I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get more feedback for you. Thanks for reading!

Cindy

Hi Alex, I didn’t see Mimi’s question on Facebook. Also, is it ok to wear a white capri in October in Italy? Thanks

Rachelle

Super helpful! I am leaving for Italy this week for a ten day trip (Rome, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Amalfi Coast) and I think I’ll lean more toward the summer wardrobe but will add a few fall pieces just incase! I wasn’t planning to pack a pair of heels (and I am a huge heel girl)…so now I am rethinking my no heel decision. Perhaps wedges can suffice?

Hi Rachelle, I’ll post your question on FB to see what everyone thinks 🙂 Thanks!

ricki

Thank you for “What to Wear in Italy” it helped so much 😉 My suit case is packed and ready for Rome next week! I love this Travel Blog!!!!!!

Thanks Ricki! Hope you have a great trip 🙂

Christina

Love that you put this together. Doing a 17 day tour of Italy starting mid-September – should I follow more of the summer or autumn list?

Maybe a bit of both since the weather will vary based on your location.

Thank you so much fo putting these lists together – super helpful in determining what’s acceptable by geography. Traveling to Italy mid-September for just over two weeks – should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn if our itinerary includes Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Como?

You should plan for both since the weather will vary based on your location – just plan to layer 🙂

Thank you so much for putting these together. I always struggle with what to pack based on culture and geography. Headed to Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice, Como and Milan) on the 10th of September – any packing suggestions? Should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn at that point?

Michelle

Incredibly stylish! Will there also be a Scotland series?

Yes, it’s a little delayed but it’s coming 🙂

Penny Sadler

Great job! Thank you for confirming too, in the south, don’t show too much skin. I often see tourists in short shorts, tank tops, too much skin. I don’t even pack shorts for the south. Can’t wait to return to Italy this fall!

Happy that Jacopo was able to give us info straight from the source 🙂

Clare

Top tips for packing for Italy

Italy packing list essentials, items for your transit or flight to italy, what to wear in italy, italy clothes packing list, toiletries and make up, technology items, items for kids, what not to bring to italy.

You need to think about four major things to consider when packing for your trip to Italy

  • the time of year you are visiting and the weather
  • how much walking you will do
  • how much luggage you want to take
  • your style (this needs attention in Italy!)

The weather in Italy

Italy has four distinct seasons and temperatures vary by region. In the south and Sicily, the temperatures are very hot in summer and they experience much milder winters.

As you would expect, in the north and alpine regions it is very cold in winter. You can even see snow in Venice!

Check the weather forecast a week before your trip to see what is in store. Here is a guide to the average conditions – do check the forecast for the different regions you are visiting.

Summer [June/July/August]  – Italian summers are warm to very hot and humidity is high. Expect temperatures between 77°F and 86°F (25°C and 30°C)

Fall/Autumn [September/October/November]  – temperatures in fall are ideal for sightseeing with generally warm sunny days and cooler nights. Top temperatures range between 65°F and 75°F (18°C and 24°C)

Winter [December/January/February]  – Italy has cool to cold days and nights in winter with snow and sub-zero temperatures in the Alpine regions. You will get some rainy days. High temperatures range between 50°F and 55°F (10°C and 13°C)

Spring – [March/April/May] – Spring in Italy is lovely Temperatures at this time of year average between 60°F and 75°F (16°C and 24°C). It is also the season when you are most likely to experience rain

It’s important to note that buildings are generally well heated so in the middle of winter it can be stiflingly hot when you are indoors. Air conditioning is a bit of a luxury in summer and not as common as you might expect.

The key to having a great trip to Italy is making sure you are prepared for the elements and to not overpack. I find that the best approach is to find pieces that layer and don’t add bulk.

Walking on cobbled streets

When you walk around the picturesque streets of Italy’s cities , villages and towns there are 1,000 photo opportunities around every corner.

But, here’s the thing.

Visiting sights, walking the cobbled streets and climbing up and down stairs to get those incredible views means you need to be practical about clothing and footwear.

Style is important but you need to think about comfort too. No one wants to spend their well-deserved trip with sore feet or cold hands feeling miserable.

In Italy,  you need comfortable, sturdy and water-resistant footwear for winter. As well as a hat, scarf and gloves.

Summertime calls for sandals you can walk miles in and light clothing you can layer.

Luggage: to check or not?

Personally, I prefer to check a bag.

This is because I like to be prepared and get annoyed if I need to chase around a new destination looking for things I have at home. That eats into my trip and vacation time.

I also like to shop and bring home some treasured souvenirs. There are so many wonderful things to buy in Italy that you cannot get at home. Gorgeous scarves, shoes and leather goods as well as specialty food items like cheese which can be vacuum sealed.

Trust me, the cheese souvenir is a very good idea.

Our top rated luggage for a trip to Italy

Our favorite luggage is a medium hard-cover lightweight suitcase from Samsonite . While many people recommend taking carry on luggage only, I think a medium case is the right size for a 7-10 day trip. It’s big enough to hold all your necessary items but can also be stored in the overhead racks on most trains.

This luggage is stylish, durable and the four double-spinner wheels make it easy to move around. I like that it has a TSA security-approved lock and a zippered internal compartment so your loose belongings don’t fly around.

You can also buy this case as part of a nested set which is great if, like me, you’re short on storage and like things that match.

Italian style – La Bella Figura

Bella Figura translates literally as the beautiful figure and it is a concept of great importance to Italians. It refers to presentation and how you show yourself to the world.

Italians are always wonderfully turned out in the best that they can afford. Clothes are ironed, hair and nails are groomed and outfits are accessorized. You can see bella figura every day but particularly on Sundays as Italians enjoy passegiata – their afternoon stroll.

One thing you will not see many Italians wearing, if any, are gym clothes or flip-flops on the street. They are just not seen as refined.

It’s also important to note that shoulders and knees should be covered when entering churches – yes, that means the Vatican, San Marco in Venice and Santa Croce in Florence – all of them. For both men and women. That means no shorts, crop or spaghetti strap tops.

When you are in Italy, at the very least you should make some effort with your style. Yoga pants, crop tops and flip-flops might be comfortable or in fashion where you are from but in Italy you will stand out a mile.

Men should wear collared shirts and jackets and belted pants. I have only ever seen Italian men wear shorts on the beach.

When in doubt, opt for smart casual outfits with a little tailoring. You can always add great sunglasses and a scarf for maximum impact.

These items are the ones you absolutely must pack for your trip to Italy.

✔︎ Passport – this varies depending on your nationality but it is good practice to have at least 6 months validity on your passport. I always save an image in a secure cloud service like Dropbox and carry a printed copy too

✔︎ Visa(s) – make sure you have read and understood the visa requirements for your nationality. Italy is part of the Schengen visa zone . 3 month (90 days) visitor visas are issued on arrival to nationals of the USA, Canada, Australia  New Zealand and UK.

Nationals of China and India will need visas confirmed before arrival. Do check the visa requirements for your country of nationality before departing.

✔︎ Insurance – do not forget to organize insurance for your trip. It’s one of those things that you probably won’t use but is essential if something goes wrong on your travels.

READ: Why you should organize travel insurance for your trip to Italy .

✔︎ Tickets and documents – I like to keep as much travel information as I can online. I map out my itinerary and save copies of documents on Evernote . Because I can be a bit paranoid, I also save them on Dropbox and have a separate folder for the trip in my email account. Don’t forget copies of your medical prescriptions. I keep hard copies in an organizer like this one .

Did you book your train tickets and tours? It’s not too late! Book train tickets on Omio here and find tours on GetYourGuide here .

✔︎ Money: I like to size down my wallet when I travel so I only carry the essentials. I travel with a small amount of cash and my Wise debit Mastercard . This is the best travel money card on the market thanks to its low and transparent transaction fees and competitive conversion rates – there is no profit margin built-in >> more information here . I also have a backup credit card in case of emergencies.

✔︎ Portable wifi or International SIM:  If you use a lot of data daily like I do, consider buying or renting a portable wifi device like this one from  Solis – unlimited data from $US 10 per day for up to 10 devices. It can even charge your phone and is small and lightweight. 10% off Solis with our code: UNTOLDM – > click here to check prices .

Another option is to preorder an international SIM before you go. OneSIM offers savings of 85% or more on international roaming charges. Personally, I find moving SIMs around to be a bit of a pain though – especially as many apps require 2 factor authentication using your main phone number.

✔︎ Smartphone: travel is so much easier now we all have cameras and our documents in a palm-sized package. I did love my iPhone, but having seen some of the photos they produce, I invested in a Samsung Galaxy .

✔︎ Umbrella: don’t get caught out in a rain shower! Apart from frizzy hair, I get so annoyed at having to pay ridiculously high prices for an emergency (and bound to break in 10 minutes) umbrella from the side of the road. I have this travel umbrella  and it has never let me down.

✔︎ Crossbody bag: a medium-sized crossbody bag  is the perfect bag for travel. Choose wisely and they will fit your wallet, phone, camera and other essential items leaving your hands free to take photos but at the same time not weighing you down.

✔︎ Camera: don’t forget to capture those amazing travel moments. While phone cameras are getting better every day, I love my Olympus Pen mirrorless camera for getting those wow shots. As an added bonus it fits inside my crossbody bag.

If you’re thinking about adding a new camera to your Italy packing list, check out our guide to the best compact and lightweight travel cameras

✔︎ Packing cubes: these miracle items have been a revelation for me and our family. They make packing and unpacking a breeze. With packing cubes, you can organize your items and have a color for each person in your party.

Having tried a few brands I prefer these packing cubes   for their strong and durable design and finish.

There’s a fine balance between having things you need to keep you comfortable, and not having too much stuff to manage. I like to fit everything I need into a tote that I can pop under the seat in front for easy access. That’s one advantage of short legs!

✔︎ Large tote: I carry a large tote (like this one by Longchamp ) on board and find it is the most practical way to hold all of my things for the flight neatly. It’s great to have zip closures and internal pockets – both essential features. You don’t want your valuables rolling around the plane floor but you do want easy access to the essentials like your passport and phone. If that’s a bit pricey, try this one instead.

Inside the tote, I have pouches for my tech items, toiletries and passports. Don’t forget you need a security approved clear bag for the toiletries in your carryon.

✔︎ Scarf/pashmina:  why are planes so cold? I don’t know but because I usually feel a little chilly on any flight I bring a light wool scarf or pashmina   to keep me warm

✔︎ Pen(s): you will need them to fill in your arrivals card. I always keep a couple handy

✔︎ Hydration: for your skin – lip balm (this is the best ) and your favorite moisturizer, and for your body – a collapsible water bottle   – this will come in handy in Rome. Did you know they have fountains where you can fill up your bottle with drinking water all over the city?

✔︎ Health: I always carry hand sanitizer when I travel. Don’t forget your medication and travel/motion sickness and sleeping tablets if you need them

✔︎ Comfort:   Make your traveling space as comfortable as possible with a travel pillow ( this one is fantastic), eye mask and earplugs

✔︎ Tech: Don’t rely on inflight entertainment systems. An iPad loaded with movies, TV series and reading material is the best way to get through the long flight.

As I mentioned earlier, style is everything in Italy. If you don’t want to stand out in a sea of stylish Italians, make sure you pack items that look pulled together and a little refined.

There is no need to be a fashionista. Despite some of the incredible styles on show during Milan Fashion Week, Italians are generally conservative dressers and don’t like to stand out from the crowd. Everyone seems to have a navy blue puffer jacket for the cooler months – as an example.

Aim for smart casual and you will be fine. Although it is always nice to look a little glamorous for dinner.. ladies, bring a dress!

Very casual attire such as tiny shorts, yoga pants, flip-flops and ripped clothes are NOT recommended.

If you want to wear sports shoes then go for something classic like Superga low tops or Vega white sneakers .

What to wear in Rome and the big cities

Visiting the sights of Rome, Florence and Venice will involve some waiting time. Make sure you are suitably dressed for the weather and local culture whatever the season.

In the summer months, the weather is hot and sunny so you need to stay cool but remember you cannot enter the magnificent churches unless your shoulders and knees are covered. So tank tops and tiny shorts are not advised.

At a pinch, you could wear a scarf over your shoulders.

Italians dress more formally in the cities and you might feel uncomfortable in higher end restaurants and hotels if you are dressed very casually.

What to wear on the Amalfi Coast in summer

At the coastal resorts, the dress code is more relaxed but I still think it is stylish and glamorous.

Think cool linens and straw hats, floaty maxi dresses, statement earrings and bejeweled sandals.

Tip – You can buy yourself a pair of these finely made shoes all along the coastline but the ones you find in the boutiques of Capri are the best. The shoemakers of Capri are famous for their craftsmanship.

Italy dress code: Simple and stylish layers

Keep it simple and stylish – that’s your ‘what to wear in Italy’ mantra.

As well as these rules of 3

✔︎  Choose a 3 hued color scheme and stick to it. I like to keep things neutral for my main pieces and add a bit of interest with accessories. Black, navy, light grey and white are my go-to colors with pops of red, pink and/or light blue depending on my mood

✔︎ Only take 3 pairs of shoes . I know this is hard but shoes add weight. I like to take a pair of ankle boots in winter, sandals in summer, and ballet flats in all seasons. Avoid heels if you can, but if you must, wedges are a much better choice for walking on cobblestones.

Click links for prices: Sandals  | Flats | Sneakers | Boots

✔︎ Bring 3 statement accessories you love to brighten up your outfits – a scarf, pair of earrings or a fun hat can make all the difference. For Italy, you must also pack sunglasses

✔︎ Aim to use each item in at least  3 outfits

Over the years I have learned the hard (overpacking) way that if you pack 4 pairs of pants, you will only wear two of them. I use a week-long trip as a baseline for how many items to pack.

If I am traveling for longer then I will need to do some washing. If it’s a shorter trip I take some items out.

Here are the clothing items I recommend that you pack for your Italy trip. I have started from a basic capsule collection that can be adjusted depending on the season or special activities you have in mind.

I like to think of the activities I will be doing each day and build outfits from there.

Clothes for winter

Winter calls for a warm wool coat. Temperatures are cool to cold and freezing in the northern Alpine regions.

You need lightweight warm layers that can take you from taking in the views and splendor of the Coliseum in Rome to museum-hopping in Florence.

Click links for prices: Sweater | Coat | Scarf | Hat

I swear by Uniqlo’s thermals because they are warm and thin enough to layer but if you can’t get them where you live, these thermals also look good.

You could also swap a pair of ballet flats for long boots or a second pair of ankle boots.

Spring and Fall clothes for Italy

In spring and fall/autumn you need a lighter jacket – a classic trench coat is ideal. You might also like to take a bag in a lighter hue.

Click links for prices: Bag | Cardigan | Scarf | Jacket

You won’t need your chunkiest scarf but a warm lightweight wool or silk scarf is a good idea.

You can buy beautiful scarves in Italy if you can wait until you get there. They are such a wonderful souvenir of your trip.

Summer clothes for Italy

If you are in Italy during the summer months, try to get to the seaside at least once.

Whether it is the glamor of Capri and the Amalfi Coast or the rustic beauty of the Cinque Terre and surrounds, the Italian coast is iconic and should not be missed.

Click links for prices: Sunglasses | Skirt | Dress | Swimsuit

No matter where you go, you will need a swimsuit, sandals (and a pedicure!), a hat and of course sunglasses.

✔︎  Swap ankle boots for sandals

✔︎  Add a jaunty summer hat and some sunglasses

✔︎  Pack a pretty summer dress

✔︎  Swap a pair of pants for tailored shorts

✔︎  Add a statement skirt

✔︎  Pack your swimsuit!

If you are planning to swim or lounge on the beach, a lightweight, quick dry towel   is a useful item to pack.

Click links for prices: Dress | Skirt | Top | Foldable Hat

Try your hardest to find travel-sized versions of your favorite products. I find shampoos and conditioners take up the most space so I like to use dry shampoo ( this one is the best) to extend the time between washes. Some people swear by solid shampoo but I’m yet to try it.

One thing you must pack is a decent conditioner. When traveling your hair will need some extra care and attention. As the conditions are humid (especially in summer), I also found I need my straightener to keep my locks under control.

  Travel shampoo + conditioner

Be realistic about how much make up you need. You really can survive with only one or two eyeshadows. I like these cream eyeshadow sticks   as they have a lovely finish and the shape means they are easy to pack.

I also avoid pressed powders and shadows due to the potential for mess.

Don’t forget to pack some laundry detergent sheets . We choose them instead of pods or powder because they are light, easy to pack and mess-free.

Make sure you have enough medication for your trip plus some extra days in case you are hit with delays or other unforeseen circumstances.

Replacing medication abroad can be difficult, especially without your prescriptions. So bring copies of the scripts with you.

✔︎ First aid kit: you could try to make one yourself but this one  is small, lightweight and has everything you could think of

✔︎ Pain relief: you know what works best for you, bring your favorite products from home for headaches, joint and muscle pain

✔︎ Contraception:  always important

✔︎ Face masks and hand sanitizer: face masks are required indoors and in crowded outdoor areas. You will find hand sanitizer at most venues but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared with your own

Travel first aid kit details – click here

✔︎ iPad/laptop:  I always travel with my MacBook Pro as I am often working but I’d prefer to go just with my iPad

✔︎ Camera accessories:  don’t forget your battery charger and an extra battery. A tripod is useful too.

✔︎ Power pack: make sure your phone stays charged while you are out and about with a portable battery  Note – make sure to take this in your carry on as they are often confiscated from checked bags.

Click on links for prices: Portable battery | Compact power strip | Power strip + adapter

✔︎ Power strip:  keep all your devices powered up with this compact power strip – it even has USB ports

✔︎ Converter: so everything works as it should. If you plan to travel more frequently or are heading over to Europe, this power strip and adapter combination  looks like a great buy

✔︎ Selfie stick/tripod:  I’m a late convert to the selfie stick but I have to admit they are so handy for getting the perfect solo or group shot. Don’t buy a dodgy one from a street corner. You will be disappointed.

We recommend this one that will hold your phone and camera, has a tripod and wireless remote.

Our kids have done many long-haul flights into Italy and around Europe. We have got this down to a fine art now so I’m happy to share this with you.

Click on links for prices: Water bottle | Headphones | Backpack

Their main entertainment is an iPad loaded with games, puzzles and favorite shows. I would not fly 24 hours (even 3) with kids without one.

Keep the toys to a minimum. After many travels with our kids, we realized that they just did not play with most of them. And that means there is room for a few special souvenirs.

Kids can follow the main clothing advice but I would throw in a few extra pants, tops and underwear for whatever kids do that always makes them get so messy.

We also like our children to carry some of their things while we are sightseeing so a mini backpack is a good idea

✔︎ 2 x extra tops, pants and underwear

✔︎ mini back pack

✔︎ toys and books

✔︎ extra snacks for the plane

✔︎ water bottle

Obviously, if you are traveling with a baby you will need a whole host of things. Check out this list  of items for flying with a baby.

I would not describe myself as a light traveler but over the years I have learned to leave some things behind. These are items that I rarely use, are heavy or can be found easily at your destination.

✘ Full sized shampoo and conditioner – too heavy and take up lots of room

✘ Guidebooks – read them before you go and take notes or photos of key pages with your phone. Even better, download Lonely Planet’s Best of Italy  as an ebook

✘ Valuable jewelry – a security risk and hassle if lost

✘ Hairdryer – most hotels/AirBnBs provide one and you can always finish off with your straightener

✘ Novels – again, too heavy – invest in a Kindle or download to your iPad or phone

✘ Kids toys – as above

The Ultimate Italy Packing List: What to Bring and How to Pack Light

When it comes to packing for a trip to Italy, it’s important to strike the right balance between bringing all the essentials and not overpacking.

After all, who wants to lug around heavy suitcases while trying to explore the beautiful streets of Rome or enjoy a leisurely gondola ride in Venice?

Start by choosing versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, focusing on neutral colors to create various outfits.

Consider the season and weather conditions and which part of Itay you will be visiting but generally, lightweight layers work well.

I always pack breathable fabrics like cotton and linen to stay comfortable i n the Mediterranean climate. Pack more comfortable walking shoes for exploring cobblestone streets and historical sites vs. heels and wedges that will never be worn.

Toiletries can be downsized by using travel-sized containers or purchasing essentials upon arrival.

Leave room in your suitcase for some beautiful Italian linens pants, dresses, and souvenirs because trust you will always find something you want to buy.

Pack a compact travel adapter and a universal charger to keep your devices powered while exploring Italy.

By packing light and efficiently, you’ll be able to fully enjoy the beauty of Italy without being weighed down by unnecessary luggage.

Here are some of my top suggestions for what to pack when vacationing in Italy.

What to Pack for Italy Basics

I have divided this Italy packing list into categories: travel documents/cash, luggage, inflight essentials, clothes, shoes, toiletries, makeup, bags, gadgets, and accessories.

You need to consider all these things when considering packing for your trip to Italy.

  • The time of year you are visiting Italy and the weather
  • How much walking will you do ?
  • How much luggage do you want to take ?

“Must-Pack” Essentials Before You Depart for Italy

These items are the ones you absolutely must pack for your trip to Italy.

Passport—It is a good practice to have a passport with at least 6 months of validity. Make sure you make copies of your passport. I also suggest taking a picture of your passport, storing the image on your phone, and purchasing a sturdy passport holder .

Visa – Ensure you have read and understood the visa requirements for your nationality.

Insurance—Do not forget to organize insurance for your trip. It’s one of those things that you probably won’t use but is essential if something goes wrong on your travels. For example, I got extremely sick in the Czech Republic, which was the one time I didn’t purchase insurance.

Lesson learned! From that point on, I used and recommended Allianz Travel Insurance because it is easy to organize and file a claim online.

Allianz Travel Insurance offers both a basic package and a prime package

Alltrips basic.

The AllTrips Basic plan is perfect if you know for sure you are not going to cancel your trip but you want to be covered for emergency medical care and emergency medical transportation protection while you are traveling.

Additional benefits of the primary insurance plan include trip delay protection, baggage coverage, rental car insurance, and a 24/7 assistance hotline for travel-related emergencies.

Rates start at around $130 for the basic plan.

The AllTrips Premier plan

If you are planning a trip to Italy with your entire family, I suggest the Premier Insurance plan. This plan covers everyone in your household just in case you need to cancel, someone needs emergency medical care, or your luggage is lost or stolen.

Rates for the AllTrips Premier plan start around $450.00 which is cheaper than the deductible with my current insurance through my employer.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but if you are going on excursions in Italy, I really suggest purchasing Allianz Travel Insurance because you just never know what might happen.

You must be prepared, so Click here for the AllTrips Premier plan!

Money — I recommend bringing two credit card s (one to use, and one to keep as a backup ), and your debit card.

Make sure you use credit cards with no foreign transaction fees.

For the life of GAWD do not exchange money in the airport.

I withdrew money from the ATM when we arrived, but you can purchase euros at your bank if it makes you feel more comfortable.

What to Pack for Italy: The Suitcase

Reyleo Hard luggage with USB Port : This carry-on suitcase, thanks to its size and material, is perfect for a trip to Italy.

It has some give for extra souvenirs, and most importantly, it has two USB ports for charging your iPhone or Macbook.

What to Pack for Italy: In-Flight Essentials

When preparing for a flight to Italy, your in-flight essentials should strike a balance between comfort and entertainment for your holiday to Italy.

Start with the basics: a neck pillow , eye mask , and earplugs to help you rest during the flight.

Don’t forget to pack a cozy, lightweight blanket for added comfort. Staying hydrated is crucial, so carry a reusable water bottle that you can fill up after security.

In your personal bag, have your passport, travel documents, and any necessary visas easily accessible.

Entertainment-wise, load up your tablet or e-reader with books, movies, or TV shows, and bring noise-canceling headphones to drown out any crying babies.

It’s wise to pack some snacks like granola bars, nuts, or dried fruits for those mid-flight cravings.

Lastly, include a toiletry pouch with essentials like a toothbrush , t oothpaste , facial wipes, and lip balm to freshen up before landing.

Packaging these in-flight essentials will prepare you for a comfortable and enjoyable flight to Italy.

Italy Packing List: Clothing

I don’t know about y’all but comfort is of utmost importance to me on vacation but that doesn’t mean I can or should ignore the cultural norms of the destination.

When deciding what to wear in Italy, it’s important to consider both style and practicality.

Whether you’re strolling through the charming streets of Florence or sipping a cappuccino in a café in Rome, you’ll want to ensure your outfits are appropriate and comfortable.

First and foremost, it’s important to remember that Italians take pride in their appearance and tend to dress more formally than in many other countries.

You won’t need a full formal dress but I highly suggest dressing slightly more polished than you would for a casual outing back home. Leave the baggy jogging pants at home.

Opt for well-fitted clothing and avoid anything too revealing or casual. A good rule of thumb is to avoid wearing shorts or flip-flops unless you’re at the beach.

The weather in Italy can vary depending on the region and the time of year, so it’s important to check the forecast before packing.

The summers are hot and the winters are mild. During the summer months, lightweight and breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk are your best bet.

I suggest a cute sundress, a pair of tailored shorts , and a few breezy blouses should be at the top of your Italy packing must-haves.

In the cooler months, layering is key. A lightweight sweater or cardigan paired with a jacket or coat will keep you warm while still looking chic.

Don’t forget to bring a scarf, as it can be a practical accessory for warmth and a fashionable addition to your outfit.

I prefer neutral colors and classic patterns that can easily mix and match my wardrobe.

Lastly, when it comes to footwear, choose comfortable yet stylish options that will allow you to easily navigate the cobblestone streets of Italy.

A pair of ankle boots, loafers , or designer sneakers are versatile choices that can be dressed up or down. Avoid wearing heels unless necessary, as they can be highly uncomfortable walking on those cobblestones.

By dressing appropriately for Italian culture and weather, you’ll fit in with the locals and feel confident and comfortable while exploring Italy.

Both churches and museums require you to cover your shoulders and there will be signs outside many churches detailing which clothes are not permitted and which are not.

Clothing items that are usually not permitted are shorts, bare arms, low-cut dresses, short skirts for women and shorts, bare arms, and tank tops for men.

Men should remove their hats when they enter a church.

Please Make sure you address appropriately when visiting churches.

Basic Clothing Packing List

  • 3 Basic  Tank Tops
  • 3 Basic T-Shirts
  • 3 Blouses — Nice Dress up blouses for dinner
  • 3  Dresses — You need sleeves to go into churches.
  • 2 Pairs of Skinny Jeans
  • 1  Lightweight Jacket — For spring, summer, or fall.
  • 5 Pairs of Panties — You can wash out easily.
  • 2  Yoga Pants  —  hiking or lounging around.
  • 2 Swimsuit — The Amalfi Coast is amazing!
  • 1 travel wrap —  Double as a wrap for churches and when it gets cool at night.
  • 3 Sweaters — For early spring or late fall. (Gets pretty chilly in the spring)

Italy Packing List: Shoes

Flats or Low-heeled, stylish, leather walking shoes and casual sneakers are great options. They can easily transition from exploring the Roman ruins to a lovely Italian restaurant.

Leave the boots at home. They are too heavy to pack, and the cobblestones in Italy are brutal on your feet.

Please don’t try to wear boots, high heels, or flip-flops while exploring the ruins.

Italians produce some of the world’s most fashionable shoes, so leave room in your luggage to purchase shoes from a local leather shop. And don’t forget to negotiate!

  • Tory Burch Napa Leather Sandal : Great for dinner or casually strolling through Italian towns
  • Women’s Gazelle sneakers : Comfortable sneakers are a must if you’re packing for a trip to Italy, between snorkeling. You’ll need a sturdy and comfortable pair for hiking or walking on cobblestones at Pompeii.
  • Calvin Klein Ballet Flats : These casual yet stylish ballet flats are perfect for dinner or a night out on the town.
  • Tory Burch Espadrilles : Pack your favorite pair of flip-flops for the beach.
  • New Balance Sneaker: These breathable sneakers are great for day excursions and days when you’ll be walking a lot.

Italy Packing List: Beach Essentials

If you’re traveling to Italy during summer, you might want to spend time in Amalfi,   Capri , or one of the other amazing towns off the coast lounging at a beach.

Italy’s beaches are very crowded in the summer, so make sure you have all the beach essentials when packing for Italy .

If you plan on staying near Amalfi or Cinque Terre in July or August, you should know the beaches and hotels are packed, so please book your hotel well in advance because rooms fill up quickly.

Swim Cover-Up or Caftan

A swimsuit cover is perfect for the beach or a yacht tour to explore the grottos.  While the Italians are not shy about their bodies, I need mine covered up because I am not that one!

Water Shoes

The beaches on the coast can have a ton of rocks and coral so make sure you pack a pair of slip-on mesh beach shoes that will protect your feet if they are sensitive.

These shoes come in a range of great colors – click here for more information .

Beach Towel

I recommend packing a light beach towel that will not take up much space and dries fast. Check out this cute and chic beach towel .

 Snorkel Set

My husband loves to go snorkeling, and if you are on the coast, the Grottos are a must, so don’t forget you will need a good quality snorkel kit.

We have our own, and it packs perfectly in our luggage. Check out these bestseller snorkel sets from Amazon here.

Floating Device

Who doesn’t want to be Instagram famous?  Bring along one of these super cute gold Pegasus Float. Check out this one from Amazon here.

Beach Bag

You will need a beach bag to store your sunscreen, shades, beach towels, and other items. Check out the KEHO Canvas Beach Bag here.

Underwater Camera

If you’re heading to the coast, take an underwater camera for those underwater shots, especially if you are going snorkeling or visiting the Grottos. Click here to check out the GoPro Hero 7 Camera.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

  • GoPro Hero 7 : This camera is great to take on your travels, as it’s small, durable, and allows you to capture pictures and videos of your entire journey, both in the water and out.
  • Anker Portable Phone Charger : Pack a portable charger to keep your phone charged after taking all those amazing Italy Instagramable photos.

  • Fedora Hat : This is essential for sun protection. A crushable style means you don’t have to worry about it when stuffing it into your suitcase.
  • Zippered Canvas Reusable Tote : I was happy to have a reusable tote on my Italy packing list for the beach to store my things.

What Not To Forget To Pack For Italy

  • Pain Relief : you know what works best for you? Bring your favorite products from home for headaches, joint, and muscle pain
  • Constipation Relief : Travelers’ constipation is natural, and you don’t want to be uncomfortable while on vacation.
  • Pancho : Any sort of thin layering piece is ideal for mild nights in Italy.
  • Laundry detergent Sheets – Keep your clothes smelling fresh and you will be able to wear certain items more than once.

nails for trip to italy

  • Take some Non-Drowsy Dramamine and wear the sea band to avoid becoming seasick.

What to leave at home

I am not one of those people who can pack for two weeks in a carry-on but after years of traveling, I have learned to leave a few things behind.

Leave items you will probably not use, items that will be extra heavy or can be found easily at your destination.

  • Valuables: Leave anything that’s flashy at home to avoid being a pickpocket target.
  • Warm Clothing: This one’s a given, but you don’t need any warm clothing items for Italy unless you are traveling in the winter months.
  • Full-sized shampoo and conditioner – too heavy, take up too much room, and will weigh your luggage down.
  • Guidebooks—You don’t need to carry a guidebook around. Read it before downloading Rick Steves’s Best of Italy ebook.
  • Hairdryer – most hotels provide hair dryers.
  • Books– I am on the fence about books because I am old school and I love to hold books or magazines in my hand but some are extremely heavy so you can invest in a Kindle or download the books to your iPad or phone.

Packing For Italy – Weather

Always, always check the weather forecast a week before your trip to see what is in store when planning what to wear in Italy.

Nothing will ruin your trip quicker than not being prepared for rain in Florence or the blistering heat of Pompeii.

After you have researched the weather, you can begin to create an I nstagram-worthy travel wardrobe that will fit easily in your suitcase.

I suggest using packing cubes to store outfits by the day of the week.

Here is a guide to the average conditions – Check the forecast for the regions you visit.

Summer [June/July/August] – Italy Weather

Summers in Italy tend to be warm to very hot and extremely high humidity. Expect temperatures between 77°F and 86°F.

August is typically Italy’s hottest month, coupled with high humidity in many parts of the country.

You might think hot weather is no big deal, but remember that even on hot days in the U.S. you usually sit inside an air-conditioned house instead of trying to ensure you have not missed important historical sites.

Always check the current extended forecast for where you’re going just before you leave so you can find out in advance if it’s unseasonably cold and you will need a light jacket or a trench coat.

Fall/Autumn [September/October/November] – Italy Weather

Fall temperatures are ideal for sightseeing, with generally warm sunny days and cooler nights. Top temperatures range between 65°F and 75°F.

I’m defining fall as the months of September, October, and November in Italy, but that doesn’t mean that temperatures cool off and leaves will start turning on September 1.

September is often as warm as August, though the evenings tend to begin to cool off just a little.

By October, it’s starting to feel like fall in Italy, and November is Italy’s rainiest month, so make sure to pack an umbrella.

Like spring, fall is a transitional season, which means you’ve got to be prepared for some weather variations. So, make sure you check and double-check the weather the week before your departure.

Autumn temperatures will differ depending on what month you’re visiting and where in the country you’ll be (the northern parts are nearly always much more relaxed than the southern parts).

Winter [December/January/February] – Italy Weather

Italy has cool to cold days and nights in winter, with snow and sub-zero temperatures in the Alpine regions. There are also some rainy days. High temperatures range between 50°F and 55°F.

December isn’t always Italy’s coldest month, but it’s close. Snow is common in many parts of the country, particularly in the mountains, higher elevations, and even sometimes at sea level.

Snow falling in Venice is one of the most beautiful winter scenes you’ll see in Italy and where it’s not snowing, it’s likely to be raining.

December/January/February is an odd mix of travelers because of the thin crowds and many visitors want to spend Christmas in Italy to see Vatican City specifically.

Just remember that while the crowds are not as congested as in the summer months, many people worldwide have the same lifelong dream of spending Christmas in Italy.

You should plan and book your trip well in advance to get the best deal on a hotel room.

Spring  –  [March/April/May] – Italy Weather

Spring in Italy is lovely. The temperatures at this time of year average between 60°F and 75°F. It is also the season when you are most likely to experience rain.

Early May tends to be more temperate, though remember that the weather gets warmer as you go south.

In May, the Mediterranean was still too cold for me, but I saw plenty of people jumping right in. If you can stand cooler temperatures, make sure you pack a swimsuit just in case you decide to hit the beach.

Remember that even if the days are warm, the nights might cool off enough that you’ll want a light layer for your walk back from your late-night dinner.

Rain isn’t unheard of, either, so check the forecast to see whether you’ll need to pack a small umbrella or rain jacket.

May is the start of the high season in Italy, and with the high season comes higher prices and bigger crowds.

Crowds in the main tourist cities still seem to get larger in June and July, so make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes.

Safety tips while traveling to Italy

Take extra precautions while traveling in Rome, as pickpocketers and scammers are at an all-time high.

Professional thieves can pick tourists out in their sleep.

If you don’t want to look like a tourist, I suggest packing a sturdy leather purse that hangs on the front of your body rather than on the sides or back.

I wasn’t a big fan of cross bodies initially, but they are starting to grow on me, so cross bodies and travel scarfs are an option to keep your money and credit cards safe.

Keep important documents like passports, visas, money, and credit cards in a money belt, or try an anti-theft diversion kit.

Keep thieves at bay with hairbrushes , deodorant , coke can , or other items that look like the real deal!

Italy is a dream vacation of mine! This info was very helpful. I hadn’t thought about the crossbody bag – will definitely start carrying those anytime I travel now.

I love a good crossbody. I just purchased a new one yesterday. I no longer carry big bulky bags

books weigh your luggage down girl!

Now this list is quite comprehensive. I need this for every place I travel to. I also pinned the list to my travel board.

you can use it for more than just italy.. Its really a comprehensive packing list for any destination.

10 Summer Nail Colors That Are Smoking Hot

By Audrey Noble

With everyone’s current obsession with color analysis , it can be easy to chalk up summer nail colors to whatever shades are most flattering for your skin tone. But if you’re not the biggest fan of the season that’s been assigned to you or you just prefer to wear whatever color you please, you’re in luck. When it comes to our manicures and pedicures, you can throw out the rule book—anything goes.

Summertime, after all, is meant for adventures. This season’s summer colors are all about experimenting and having fun with new colors and nail designs. We’re talking bright and vibrant shades like bubble gum pink, bright reds , neon orange, or baby blues. For minimalists and creatures of habit, you’ll find rich creamy neutrals and classic colors that will still make your nails pop. And as an added bonus, there will be some winter faves that you can carry on over if you’re particularly attached to those darker shades. There’s truly a nail polish shade for everyone.

Below are ten summer nail colors that the pros predict will be huge as the temps start to rise. Read on to learn more.

Jelly Coded

With their bright shades and translucent finish, jelly colors are some of the most fun options you can have for your manis this summer. Betina R. Goldstein , celebrity and Chanel nail artist, says you’ll want to mix a few sheer shades together to get that milky feel (her picks are the Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Skieuse , Diva , and Sundrop if you want to recreate one of her favorite sheer pink nail looks for Margot Robbie at this year’s SAG Awards) and finish it off with a top coat to give it an extra shiny gloss.

Longwear Nail Colour

Vintage Green

Goldstein says if you’re feeling inspired by Apple TV+’s hit show Palm Royale , opt for a 60s deep olive green. She loves the CND Vinylux Nail Polish in Crisp Green to add a pop of color to contrast a pink or orange fit. We’re also loving Gucci’s 712 Melinda Green or the Color Dept Kiwi Juice Nail Polish to get that vintage-inspired green nail shade.

Vinylux Crisp Green #363

Are we gearing up for another tomato girl summer ? According to celebrity nail artist and founder of her eponymous nail polish brand Jin Soon Choi , we just might be. “I adore the hot orange-red shade with a translucent finish,” Choi says. “It’s vibrant and lively, capturing the essence of summer like anything else.” She created this very look for Brandon Maxwell’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection at New York Fashion Week, using the JINSoon in Crush . We also like the Hermès Les Mains Nail Polish in Orange Poppy or the Dazzle Dry in Red Hot Chili for a very bright red with orange tint or the Addiction Tokyo The Nail Polish in Tokyo Vibe for a deeper shade.

Latte Beige

For mani minimalists, neutral nails will be your north star. Goldstein loves the Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour Légende , which she describes as a “latte beige,” with its rich creamy tan color that will go with any look. If you want something a bit deeper with warm undertones, we like the Olive & June Long Lasting Polish in Caramel Budino . For something cooler or more neutral, try the Dior Vernis Gel Shine Long Wear Nail Lacquer in 402 Cashmere or the Côte No. 122 Caramel Clay Brown Nail Polish .

Another great neutral to turn to is a classic white. “[It’s] perfect to rock from winter to summer as they go with everything and still feel so minimal, yet fresh,” says celebrity nail artist Queenie Nguyen . She recommends going towards an off-white shade for something a bit more unexpected. We like this Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab Pro in Tenderness which has deep mauve undertones or the Sundays No. 48 which is warm and creamy with a tint of pink.

Yellow Taxi

Fellow New Yorkers know how magical the city can be in the summertime and what better way to evoke the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple than with the iconic taxi cab yellow. Choi created this very look for the Helmut Lang Spring/Summer 2024 collection at NYFW. “This refreshing hue adds a playful yet chic element to the runway, perfectly reflecting the contemporary style,” she says. “[It] demonstrates a keen understanding of the pulse of New York fashion, injecting a burst of energy into the fashion landscape. I adore it as a bold statement.” You can get this exact shade using the JINSoon’s Tweety or opt for something similar like Londontown Lakur in Mango and the Hermès Les Mains Nail Polish in Jaune Impérial . We also like the Habit Cosmetics Nail Polish in Yellow which is a deep mustard shade that’s super pretty.

Fiery Orange

Bold and bright are just par for the course when it comes to hot weather. And nothing screams summer quite like a neon orange. Goldstein loves a fiery shade, like the Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Incendiaire , which gives you a bright red with orange undertones. You can also try ILNP’s Turbocharged Orange to get that neon shade or Essie’s To DIY For something a bit more muted but still just as bold.

ULTA BEAUTY

Nguyen loves taking inspo from Pantone’s fashion color trend report palette for all summer nail looks. There’s a fresh mix of soft pastels and earthy tones, but we especially love Capri. Aptly named, it is described as a “bright blue hue reminiscent of the azure colored waters of the blue grotto.” We like Nails Inc.’s Seabright Street Neon Light Nail Polish and Zoya’s in Breezi for a very bright blue or Essie’s Offbeat Chic and Aprés Nail in Posei Donna for that ocean-like feel.

Silver Chrome

Who says silver shimmer is only a winter shade? Choi argues that it makes for a great summer mani. “Silver chrome and silver [shimmer] bring chicness and a modern look to your nails, especially when paired with pasted colors and vibrant shades for nail art,” she says. “[It] creates a great summer ensemble.” She recommends using something like JINsoon Halo , which is a sheer silver with glitter finish. You can also use Nail Inc.’s Wherever I May Chrome and OPI’s Go Big or Go Chome for a more shimmery metallic look or Sally Hansen’s Color Foil to get that chrome effect.

Deep Bordeaux

While we love a classic red nail, we say go for a dark and romantic with a deep Bordeaux. Goldstein especially loves bringing this popular winter shade over to the summer season and recommends pairing it when wearing your neutral linens or clothes with a pop of color like red or lilac for an unexpected contrast. She likes the classic Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour in Rouge Noir . But you can also try PLA’s Most Wine-derful Time of the Year or Essie Couture’s Spiked With Style for a dark wine-colored shade.

Copy My Trip: A grand rail tour of Italy from Rome to Venice

Ann Douglas Lott

Apr 19, 2024 • 7 min read

nails for trip to italy

Rolling through the Italian countryside on a restored 1960s train? A once-in-a-lifetime experience © Sina Hotels

Lonely Planet associate editor Ann Douglas Lott recently traveled through Italy aboard a vintage train, regional trains and bus. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

When I told people I had a trip planned to Italy , the joy with which they talked about their own travels there was endless – the dreamy landscapes, the fascinating ruins, the life-changing slice of pizza they had, how their daily cup of coffee just hasn't compared since – but I knew I wouldn't truly understand that joy until I experienced it for myself.

Yes, I was recently a first-timer in one of the planet's most-visited destinations, so my expectations were exceedingly lofty. The plan was a grand rail (and occasional bus) tour stopping in Rome , Perugia , Florence and Venice – all in just one week. Initially, the pressure to cram in as much as I could that week was at the front of my mind, but thanks to the Italian art of slow living, I learned to appreciate pacing myself as I journeyed (and ate) my way through this incredible country.

Also a first-timer in Italy? Here's what you should know

L: holding a hotel room key in front of the bed; R: A view of the hotel pool from a room balcony

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

Four fabulous destinations meant four fabulous, centrally-located hotels to match. I was invited to stay at a different five-star Sina hotel in each city: the 150-year-old Bernini Bristol in Rome, the hilltop Sina Brufani in Perugia, the classy Villa Medici in Florence and the canal-side Centurion Palace in Venice.

The brand has been owned and operated by the same family for over 60 years, so that classic Italian charm is undeniable. I also just adore a hotel that  feels  like the destination it's in, so details like the Brufani's elegant, classical decor and the Villa Medici's grand, early 19th-century lobby enhanced the whole experience. While considered luxury hotels, don't dismiss these if you like to stick to a tighter travel budget ; nightly rates at these properties cover a broad spectrum, typically depending on the popularity of the destination. Perugia, for example, would suit a budget traveler more than Florence (Perugia was my favorite stop – more on that later).

Left: A view of the town of Perugia framed by a window; Middle: a swimming pool with glass on its floor that looks over ruins; Right: a view of the Grand Canal in Venice

Some highlights:

  • Sipping Aperol spritzes on the hotel's panoramic rooftop at sunset in Rome
  • The Perugia hotel's pool with a glass bottom that peers into an ancient ruin, plus the view of Umbria's rolling hills from my room
  • The vintage keys and private garden with its own pool at the Florence hotel
  • Enjoying views of the Grand Canal from the Venice property's front porch

Left: a row of green velvet train seats; Top right: a retro, symmetrical viewing cabin at the rear of the train; Bottom right: a view of the mountains through the train window

Favorite activity from the trip?

Let's talk about the ultimate train ride. It's always a good idea to roll through the Italian countryside, but on a beautifully restored 1960s masterpiece? That's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Arlecchino is the stuff of Wes Anderson films, with its roomy, brightly colored velvet seats, massive windows, vintage bar car and a chic, retro viewing cabin at either end of the train. Departing from Rome, we crawled through Lazio and into the Umbrian countryside, between green hills, through mountain tunnels and past lovely medieval towns like Assisi .

I count myself lucky to have scored a seat on this journey to Perugia – the Arlecchino doesn't run daily like the Trenitalia lines. But the operator of this line, Fondazione FS Italiene , runs similar journeys throughout the country almost daily, so you can still experience the magic of riding on a vintage Italian train. Tickets can be booked on the website , where you can also learn about each of their historic lines. Prices vary depending on the journey, but most hover around €50 per adult. If you prefer a speedier ride and choose to go the Trenitalia route, staggering views are guaranteed no matter which service you board.

Top left: a whole pizza and a beer; Bottom left: gelato with a view of a canal in Venice; Right: walking while holding a sandwich

Best thing you ate?

The aforementioned life-changing slice of pizza? It was a mozzarella and guanciale slice from Zizzi Pizza in Rome. But the best thing I ate was a ridiculously fresh sandwich from I' Bacaro De Bischeri in Venice: warm focaccia, prosciutto, arugula, caramelized onions and burrata.

Honorable mention: the amaretto mousse and tiramisu from Osteria Al Bacareto in Venice, ham and parmesan fettuccine from Harry's Bar The Garden in Florence (conveniently located inside the Villa Medici hotel) and a simple bite of burrata – so fresh it was still warm – in Perugia. Oh, and the whole gelato spread at Gelateria Nico in Venice, though I'm partial to stracciatella  (chocolate chip).

Want more Italian restaurant recs? Here's where you should eat in Florence right now

Right: a wall of Murano glass cups; Left: a gallery of glass chandeliers, plants, animals and more

What was the most touristy thing you did?

When in Venice, book a glass factory tour! Our hotel arranged for a water taxi to deliver us to Murano for a factory and gallery tour of Schiavon Art Team's headquarters, one of the island's many glassblowers. The taxi ride across the lagoon was a glamorous experience in itself – a private, classy wooden boat with leather seats – but you can also take a vaporetto to Murano for a fraction of the cost.

We entered a vast gallery of vibrant glass chandeliers, plants, abstract faces and even a mural of the Avengers (they can do it all). But the highlight was observing the glass masters at work – a team of five almost dancing to keep the glass hot while also perfecting the movements and timing of sculpting the given subject, in this case, a beautiful blue marlin. I could've sat there all day, but the canals were calling.

Left: the last few minutes of light over the town of Perugia; Right: looking up in an underground fortress

What was the most under-the-radar activity you enjoyed?

If you need a place to stop between Rome and Florence, this is it. Umbria is everything you love about Italy without the crowds (except during Perugia's annual chocolate and jazz festivals in March and July, respectively), and the one night I spent in Perugia's medieval center wasn't nearly long enough.

While there was still daylight, I toured the underground fortress Rocca Paolina . You can enter the fortress via escalator from a small park called Giardini Carducci , which happens to be a fabulous spot to watch the sunset over the rolling hills of Umbria's countryside. The next morning, head to Sandri for a coffee and pastry – this is Perugia's most famous cafe. It's been a family-run business since 1860, and multiple locals told me it sells the best pastries around.

Right: a pair of red Mary Janes; Middle: a red neck scarf with illustrations of Capri; Right: a glass bead necklace and marbled notebook

Did you bring home a souvenir?

Oh, did I shop. Here's the haul: in Florence, I snagged a pair of red and pink velvet Mary Janes at Bramada . It was a love-at-first-sight-through-the-window kind of moment. The rest of my shopping was in Venice: a marble-covered notebook of watercolor paper from Il Papiro (and regular notebooks for my family), a Murano glass charm necklace from The M Venezia (just €20–25 each) and a vintage red scarf with illustrations of Capri from Vintageria for just €5 – perhaps a sign that Capri should be my next Italian destination?

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

The timing of this trip was simply marvelous: March shoulder season, specifically the week before Easter. The weather was decently warm as highs hovered around 15°C (60°F), the sun was mostly shining, and the Easter crowds hadn't yet made their way to the more popular cities. I packed a short, thin coat for the cooler nights and occasional wind.

Also, when you book a regional train ticket (aka, not the stylish Arlecchino), you have to validate it before you board your train. Otherwise, you'll face a hefty fine when ticket inspectors come to scan your ticket on board. Look for one of the green machines at the head of the platform, and insert your ticket to get it stamped. This isn't required on high-speed trains, though – those tickets are valid for a specific train service and seat.

Want to work remotely in Italy? The country just launched its new digital nomad visa.

nails for trip to italy

Remote workers with dreams of working from the rolling hills of Tuscany or the cliffs of Positano are now one step closer to making that reality. Italy launched a new digital nomad visa.

Two years after its announcement, the highly anticipated digital nomad visa officially became available for those eligible on April 4.

“Italian-style, everything happens slowly,” said Nick Metta, a lawyer for the law firm Studio Legale Metta , which has helped Americans relocate to Italy for decades. “Now there is a pipeline of people waiting just to file the application. It's been a long-awaited visa.”

Most of Metta’s clients would previously apply for a student visa, which allowed them to work part time in Italy.

Under the new visa, people will be able to work from Italy for one year, with the option to renew once their visa is due for expiration. Without a visa, U.S. travelers could only stay in Italy for up to 90 days without the ability to work.

The launch makes Italy the latest European country to offer a digital nomad visa , which has already been available in Greece and Hungary.

Here’s everything we know about the digital nomad visa for Italy:

Destinations behind a paywall? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

Who can apply for a digital nomad visa in Italy?

According to the official decree , the visa is meant for those who “carry out a highly qualified work activity through the use of technological tools that allow you to work remotely.”

The regulations define eligible applicants as “digital nomads,” self-employed freelancers, “remote workers,” or those employed by a company outside of Italy and can work from anywhere, according to Studio Legale Metta.

To qualify for the visa, the applicant has to meet certain requirements:

◾ A university or college degree or an accredited professional license.

◾ Six months of work experience in the industry, or five years for applicants without a university degree.

◾ An existing employment contract.

◾ A criminal record check.

◾ Proof of an annual income of 28,000 euros (about $29,880.06).

◾ Evidence of housing in Italy.

◾ Evidence of health insurance coverage.

Applicants can also apply to have family members join them on their Italian move, but the government has to give the final approval.

How do I apply for the digital nomad visa in Italy?

Thankfully, Metta said the paperwork for the digital nomad visa isn’t “too complicated.”

The first stop for interested applicants will be the Italian Consulate for their area. “Consulates are basically the front of the government to receive the applications,” Metta said. Interested applicants can book an appointment with the consulate and start gathering their necessary documents. People can also apply by mailing in their application. (However, Metta did mention consulate websites are often confusing and outdated, so working with a relocation service can make things easier.)

To apply, applicants will also need a passport with an expiration date at least three months after the end of the visa period and two passport-sized photos.

Relocation services can also help people navigate the sometimes complicated process of applying for a visa, such as negotiating early termination penalties with landlords in Italy.

These services also help people with state and tax planning, especially if people own assets in the U.S., like a house. Once in Italy, people need to register their residency with the town hall, which will determine what sort of taxes they’ll pay. People can speak to an international tax specialist to figure out their future taxes as well.

How much will the visa cost?

According to Studio Legale Metta, the application fee is 116 euros (about $123.78) per person.

How long will the application process take?

Not too long, actually. Metta estimates the process could take just three weeks if applicants are “well-organized and have all your tax documents filed.”

Vince McMahon's life after WWE: Kittens, vacations and staying in touch with Trump

Photo Illustration: Vince McMahon and WWE Headquarters

As he faces a mountain of legal woes, former WWE leader Vince McMahon is traveling, eating out and keeping in touch with friends and associates — including former President Donald Trump.

McMahon resigned as executive chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment’s parent company almost three months ago after a former employee, Janel Grant, accused him in a bombshell lawsuit of sexual abuse and trafficking. He denied the allegations. McMahon, 78, is also facing a federal criminal investigation , although he hasn’t been charged.

NBC News and CNBC talked to 11 people familiar with McMahon and WWE about how he’s been spending his time — and how the global brand he built over more than four decades is moving on without him. These people, including close personal associates and company insiders, declined to be named, citing ongoing legal cases and the confidential nature of internal corporate communications.

Multiple WWE insiders said he hasn’t had any contact with company leaders and figureheads since he resigned. Mark Shapiro, the operating chief of WWE parent company TKO Group Holdings, said in March that McMahon “doesn’t work for the company, doesn’t come into the office, and he’s not coming back to the company.”

That also means McMahon hasn’t talked to his son-in-law, WWE creative chief and former superstar Paul “Triple H” Levesque, or daughter, Stephanie McMahon-Levesque, regarding company matters, sources said. While she introduced WWE’s WrestleMania event earlier this month, McMahon-Levesque, who worked beside her father for more than 20 years and played roles in storylines, currently has no involvement with the company, according to people familiar with the matter. Levesque and McMahon-Levesque declined to comment through a spokesperson, as did a WWE representative.

UFC 276: Adesanya v Cannonier

McMahon is nonetheless indelibly linked with the wrestling outfit, which he bought from his father 42 years ago. Still, he seems to have moved on, according to multiple sources. McMahon has kept up his other routines, and it’s as if he’s unfazed by his legal fights, two sources said. For instance, on an afternoon in late March, McMahon returned on a private plane to the United States from the sunny Turks and Caicos Islands -- but he wasn’t alone, according to a person close to him. He had with him seven kittens and a puppy, all of which he brought back to be adopted by his friends, this person added.

“If anything, he’s enjoying life,” said the person, who added that McMahon had also taken a trip to Italy.

Jessica Rosenberg, an attorney for McMahon, declined to comment regarding the aspects of the former WWE chief’s life reported in this article. In an emailed statement Tuesday, however, she criticized Grant’s suit: “The lawsuit’s claims are false, defamatory and entirely without merit. We intend to vigorously defend Mr. McMahon and are confident that he will be vindicated.”

Life amid litigation

The details of McMahon’s life after his WWE reign present a stark contrast to Grant’s accusations, which paint a graphic portrait of a violent and controlling man. In the federal lawsuit, filed Jan. 25, Grant’s attorneys said that she was “the victim of physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault and trafficking at WWE,” naming McMahon and former WWE executive John Laurinaitis. Both men have denied the accusations in the suit. The lawsuit also named WWE as a defendant. WWE and its parent company, TKO, have said that they take Grant’s allegations “very seriously.”

“Vince McMahon raped, trafficked and physically assaulted Janel Grant as part of his decades-long normalization of treating women within the WWE as objects. He might have thought that Janel would just walk away, but that wishful thinking couldn’t be further from the case,” Ann Callis, an attorney for Grant, said in a statement Wednesday. “Every day we are focused on adding to our mountain of evidence, speaking with other victims, hiring renowned experts on sex trafficking/coercive control and preparing to vociferously litigate this case.”

Federal investigators seized a phone from McMahon and have been trying to determine whether federal law was broken in the conduct surrounding Grant’s allegations, NBC News reported in February . WWE had disclosed last summer that investigators served McMahon with a federal grand jury subpoena and executed a search warrant in July.McMahon is cooperating with authorities, according to one of the people close to him. McMahon believes officials won’t bring any charges against him and that Grant’s civil case will be settled out of court, said a person close to the former wrestling executive.

Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Grant’s attorneys said that there have been absolutely no settlement talks with McMahon.

Vince McMahon speaks to an audience during a WWE fan appreciation event in Hartford, Conn. on Oct. 30, 2010.

While his legal battles persist, McMahon is often ferried by a private driver from his posh Connecticut home to Manhattan, according to one of the sources close to him. There, he eats with friends at restaurants such as the old-school Italian spot Il Tinello East on 46th Street, sees his longtime barber for biweekly haircuts and works with his personal trainer multiple times a week, the source said.  Two other sources, however, say McMahon has otherwise been “quite guarded” and often on the phone with his lawyers to map out plans since Grant’s lawsuit was made public.

Staying in touch

McMahon has also talked to Trump, according to two of the people close to the wrestling impresario. The two billionaires have been in touch regularly, according to a person close to McMahon, although it isn’t clear what they’ve discussed.

Trump and the McMahon family go way back: The former president hosted two WrestleMania events in Atlantic City in the late 1980s, engaged in a wrestling “feud” with McMahon in 2007 and is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame. Linda McMahon, McMahon’s wife, served as the Small Business Administration’s head in Trump’s Cabinet, led a pro-Trump super PAC and is now on the board of the publicly traded Trump Media and Technology Group.

In 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported that McMahon paid $5 million in previously unrecorded expenses to the since-dissolved Donald J. Trump Foundation during two of the years Trump appeared on WWE programming.

Vince McMahon gets more than he bargained for when Donald Trump got physical after signing the contract for Wrestlemania XXIII's \"Hair vs Hair\" match at Monday Night RAW in Washington on March 12, 2007.

Trump, who’s running for a second term as president, has also been accused of sexual assault and is facing his own costly pile of civil and criminal legal troubles, including four separate indictments. Trump has denied wrongdoing in his various cases, pleading not guilty in each criminal proceeding, including a New York trial that started Monday. Another person close to McMahon said that the two men don’t discuss their legal problems and that Trump doesn’t provide legal advice.

Hours after the publication of this story, a spokesperson for McMahon pushed back.

“Mr. McMahon has not been ‘staying in touch’ or ‘been in touch regularly’ with former President Trump. He has spoken with Mr. Trump once in the past several years and that was for about a minute or so after Mr. McMahon’s back surgery. Other than that, there have been no communications between the two,” the spokesperson said.

A representative for Trump declined to comment.

Since he resigned, McMahon has been in touch with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena, sources said. Johnson and Cena, both Hollywood superstars, are two of WWE’s biggest success stories.

Publicly, Johnson has thanked TKO and WWE executives regarding his addition to the TKO board earlier this year. In February, Cena told the radio host Howard Stern that “the whole thing is super unfortunate and it sucks,” while noting that he loves McMahon and has a “great relationship” with him. “But in the same breath,” he added at the time, “I’m also a big advocate of accountability.”

WrestleMania 29 Press Conference

Cena and Johnson are both represented by the William Morris Endeavor agency, which is part of Endeavor Group — the majority owner of TKO.A spokesperson for Johnson declined to comment. A representative for Cena didn’t respond to requests for comment.

WWE in transition

This isn’t the first time WWE has had to contend with controversy stemming from its former longtime leader. McMahon was acquitted of federal criminal charges in the early 1990s related to the steroid scandal that engulfed the wrestling world at the time.

In 2022, he briefly stepped down as WWE’s leader after the Journal reported that he paid millions of dollars to multiple women to cover up his alleged extramarital affairs. The Journal also reported that other women had come forward with sexual misconduct allegations . WWE amended its financial reports to reflect the payments. McMahon denied all wrongdoing.

His daughter helped take over leadership of the company in the interim, but McMahon-Levesque resigned when her father, who owned a controlling stake in WWE, returned in early 2023 . McMahon then engineered a deal to merge the company with Endeavor Group’s UFC to form TKO. Longtime Hollywood super agent Ari Emanuel is the CEO of both Endeavor and TKO.

That deal, announced in April 2023 , made McMahon the executive chairman of the new company, and he gave up majority control of WWE. At the time, he told CNBC he wouldn’t be “in the weeds” with creative decisions but he would weigh in on big decisions. That marked a big shift for McMahon. His family has been in the business dating back to the early 20th century. After buying the company from his father, who was known as “Vince Sr.,” the younger McMahon then employed flamboyant superstars such as Hulk Hogan and the Rock, staging glitzy pay-per-view events like WrestleMania, to build it into an international sensation. And while WWE is still defined in part by the family, McMahon’s daughter and son-in-law are publicly attempting to push the brand into the future.

WrestleMania 40

At WrestleMania 40, held earlier this month in Philadelphia, McMahon-Levesque surprised the crowd with an appearance and hailed her husband’s leadership. “Every Wrestlemania is special for its own reason, but I think WrestleMania 40 might be the one I’m most proud of, because this is the first WrestleMania of the Paul Levesque era,” she said . (Linda McMahon joined her daughter backstage, according to an Instagram photo posted by wrestling star Charlotte Flair.) Levesque himself proclaimed a “new era” for WWE.

It was a significant moment for the brand, coming during the first WrestleMania since the Grant lawsuit -- and it’s the first one under TKO’s management. Still, some rank-and-file WWE employees have griped that the company hasn’t done more to address the situation, according to an insider. After McMahon quit, Shapiro told a global town hall for both TKO and Endeavor employees “in no uncertain terms” that the former wrestling boss wouldn’t return, according to another insider. Shapiro also assured employees that Levesque and WWE President Nick Khan have his support, this person said.

Otherwise, WWE is more relaxed since McMahon resigned in January, sources said. When McMahon was still running things, he would come in late in the afternoon and often stay until around midnight or beyond, two current employees said. (His office at WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, is unoccupied but otherwise intact, according to an executive, who called it “spooky.”) He had a reputation for being capricious and quick to fire employees, which generated fear and created a chilling effect, according to sources.

Now there’s more levity and freedom to make a mistake or suggest an idea, some employees said.

The current leadership operates more conventionally, giving underperforming employees a standard progress report and opportunities to improve before taking action, they added.

World Wrestling Entertainment Headquarters

Some McMahon loyalists remain, but one employee said: “WWE is actually a really great place to work, and Vince distracted from that. It’s been much better since he left.” Another said: “People feel like they’re on steadier ground.”The company, meanwhile, is charting its post-McMahon course with the help of lucrative media rights deals. In September, WWE signed a $1.4 billion deal with NBC News’ parent company, NBCUniversal, for domestic rights to “Friday Night SmackDown.” In January, it inked a 10-year, $5 billion pact with Netflix to move its flagship “Raw” show and other programs to the streaming giant next year. WWE announced both agreements after it became part of TKO and McMahon ceded much of his official control over the brand.

There’s yet another sign suggesting that McMahon’s distance from WWE is more than temporary: He has sold hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of shares in TKO since November, a sizable chunk of those sales coming after he resigned in January. That’s different from when he briefly stepped down in 2022.

“This time, it’s like, OK, now, it’s over -over,” one of the insiders said.
