Thousands of Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott Hotel Workers Go on Strike — What to Know

Thousands of hotel workers are on strike across the country, demanding better wages and workloads and a reversal of COVID-19-era cuts.

The striking workers, which include housekeepers and other employees represented by the UNITE HERE union, walked off the job at 25 hotels in nine cities across the country, including in Baltimore, Boston, Greenwich, Honolulu, Kauai, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle. The workers are employees at major hotel chains like Hilton , Hyatt , and Marriott .

“Ten thousand hotel workers across the U.S. are on strike because the hotel industry has gotten off track,” Gwen Mills, the international president of UNITE HERE, said in a statement . “During COVID, everyone suffered, but now the hotel industry is making record profits while workers and guests are left behind. Too many hotels still haven’t restored standard services that guests deserve, like automatic daily housekeeping and room service… We won’t accept a ‘new normal’ where hotel companies profit by cutting their offerings to guests and abandoning their commitments to workers.”

Each city’s strike is expected to last up to three days. Additional strikes have been authorized in New Haven, Oakland, and Providence, according to the union .

While affected hotels will still be open, UNITE HERE warned potential hotel guests that picket lines would run outside affected hotels for up to 24 hours a day.

Michael D’Angelo, the head of labor relations for Hyatt in the Americas, told Travel + Leisure the hotel group had “contingency plans in place to minimize impact on hotel operations related to strike activity.”

“Our colleagues are the heart of our business, and Hyatt has a long history of cooperation with the unions that represent our employees, including UNITE HERE,” D’Angelo said. “We are disappointed that UNITE HERE has chosen to strike while Hyatt remains willing to continue bargaining in good faith.”

A Hilton spokesperson shared with T+L that the company is cooperating with the unions that represent their team members.

"We remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach fair and reasonable agreements that are beneficial to both our valued Team Members and to our hotels," the spokesperson said.

A representative and Marriott did not immediately respond to requests for comment from T+L. According to The Associated Press, UNITE HERE has a proven track record of hotel strikes. A previously organized strike in Southern California resulted in significant wage hikes, increased employer contributions to pensions, and fair workload guarantees with 34 hotels, according to the AP.

ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels dropped from DirecTV in contract dispute

Walt Disney Co.-owned channels, including ESPN and ABC stations, were knocked off DirecTV platforms Sunday after talks to reach a new distribution deal collapsed.

The blackout — which affects DirecTV’s nearly 11 million customer homes — hit before the kickoff of Sunday’s highly anticipated University of Southern California -Louisiana State University college football game and in the middle of ESPN’s coverage of the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York. The impasse came at the deadline for a new distribution deal after weeks of haggling between the two companies over contract terms and fees that Disney charges to carry its programming.

Without an agreement, DirecTV and its U-Verse service lost the rights to carry Disney channels.

“They want to continue to chase maximum profits and dominant control at the expense of consumers — making it harder for them to select the shows and sports they want at a reasonable price,” Rob Thun, chief content officer at DirecTV, said in a statement shortly after the channels went dark at 4 p.m. PST.

Sports fans will quickly feel the pinch. In addition to college football on ESPN and ABC, the new NFL season begins later this week. ESPN is set to start its season with a “Monday Night Football” game Sept. 9 between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets, in which Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is expected to return after suffering an injury a year ago.

Disney’s eight ABC stations, including KABC-TV Channel 7 in Los Angeles, are no longer available on DirecTV. That means viewers of local news and “Jeopardy,” “Wheel of Fortune,” “Good Morning America” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will be without some of their favorite shows. Customers in Fresno, San Francisco, Chicago and New York also lost access to their local ABC station.

Other Disney-owned channels, including Freeform, FX and National Geographic , are included in the outage.

“While we’re open to offering DirecTV flexibility and terms which we’ve extended to other distributors, we will not enter into an agreement that undervalues our portfolio of television channels and programs,” read a statement from Disney Entertainment heads Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro. “We urge DirecTV to do what’s in the best interest of their customers and finalize a deal that would immediately restore our programming.”

It’s not clear how long the blackout will last. A year ago, a similar tussle between Disney and Charter Communications , which operates the Spectrum TV service, resulted in a 12-day blackout of Disney channels .

The Labor Day Weekend clash reflects the television industry’s economic strain .

The shift to streaming and resulting cord-cutting has devastated pay-TV companies . DirecTV has lost more than half of its subscribers in the last decade. The El Segundo company now has about 11 million subscribers, according to industry estimates.

This year marked the worse-ever industry drop in pay-TV subscribers, according to the MoffettNathanson financial research firm. During the first quarter, the industry lost nearly 2.4 million pay-TV homes in the U.S. — a 12% year-over-year decline, the firm said in a recent report.

The entrance to Walt Disney Co. in Burbank

Subscriber declines have squeezed Disney .

The Burbank entertainment company has long relied on billions of dollars in programming fees that it receives annually from DirecTV and other providers. The fees are calculated, in part, by the number of subscribers that receive the channels.

In addition, Disney’s ESPN has historically been the most expensive basic cable channel, costing distributors nearly $10 per month per subscriber home. Disney has sought to maintain those premiums to help pay for its pricey sports rights contracts, including long-term NFL and NBA deals.

Disney and Charter end fight. But how long will the cable bundle survive?

There are actually things to talk about in Hollywood other than the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes — such as the Disney-Charter deal to end the blackout.

Sept. 12, 2023

The challenges set the stage for contentious contract talks at DirecTV’s El Segundo headquarters.

The environment has changed dramatically since the last time the two companies hammered out an accord. That was in 2019 when DirecTV was wholly owned by AT&T. Since then, the phone giant has spun its television distribution group into a separate entity and taken on a private equity partner, TPG, to manage the business.

For the past year, DirecTV executives have been working on plans to increase its offerings to consumers.

DirecTV wants to offer genre-themed packages — think sports or general entertainment — to provide cheaper plans for customers who refuse to pay $100 or more each month for a traditional bundle with more than 100 television channels. Executives want to appeal to customers who have long pined for a way to sign up for only the channels they actually watch.

But, according to DirecTV, existing contracts with programmers prevent it from widely offering customers curated packages.

“Instead of allowing distributors like DirecTV to also develop smaller, more tailored packages at prices that reflect the value they get from the content, programmers have continued to impose and enforce strict bundling requirements,” DirecTV said in a position paper in late August.

Can ESPN survive while cable TV dies?

Long known as the ‘Worldwide Leader in Sports,’ ESPN is grappling with cord-cutting, rising rights fees and skepticism from Wall Street.

Sept. 2, 2023

The expiration of the 2019 distribution deal with Disney has given DirecTV an opening to try to change contract terms.

The satellite TV company said it has asked Disney to ease a key distribution requirement — minimum penetration rates. For example, Disney’s deals require that DirecTV and other distributors provide ESPN to a minimum of nearly 80% of its customer base.

DirecTV maintains that such “antiquated” penetration rates “force pay TV customers to subscribe to many channels they may not watch,” and the contracts limit DirecTV’s ability to offer smaller and less-expensive packages. During the negotiations, Disney said it offered DirecTV with more flexibility to tailor “skinny” genre-themed packages that it wanted for its customers.

The Burbank company also agreed to work with DirecTV on the minimum penetration rates, Thun said.

“But not enough to really change the game for us,” Thun said in an interview. “We moved much further than they have [during the negotiations], and what they put on the table in terms of skinny bundles was not the total amount that we had asked for.”

Making a wholesale switch could reduce revenue flowing to Disney at a critical time.

Disney’s stock has been under pressure amid softness at its theme parks and resorts and shares have been trading near five-year lows. On Friday, Disney closed up nearly 1% to $90.38.

Last year’s outage of ESPN and other Disney channels on Charter’s Spectrum ended with an agreement that saw several smaller Disney channels, including Freeform and Disney Jr., dropped from Spectrum’s lineup.

In the end, both companies said they came away with a win.

Charter didn’t force the issue of penetration rates. Instead, Disney and Charter agreed to widen the reach of the Burbank company’s streaming services, including Disney+ into Spectrum homes.

Disney executives had been hoping last year’s Charter agreement can provide a template for a pact with DirecTV.

In the end, the weekend talks broke down over economics, executives said.

“We continue to invest in really high-quality content — scripted entertainment, ABC News and sports rights,” Justin Connolly, Disney’s president of platform distribution, said in an interview last week.” All of those things continue to increase in cost for us and ... the rates that we are asking for are in-line with what we have with other providers in the marketplace.”

Where are hotel workers striking right now? From Honolulu to Boston — what to know

R olling hotel worker strikes affected hotels in major cities across the U.S. over the Labor Day holiday weekend and into this week.

While most of those strikes are winding down — more on that below — travelers to several major U.S. cities, including Honolulu, Boston and San Francisco, should still be prepared for possible disruptions to hotel stays as thousands of hotel workers look for new labor contracts with their employers. Workers at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront have even decided to remain on strike until a deal is struck.

Around the country, labor unions representing hotel workers have been negotiating for higher wages, better working conditions and more employee protections. After many hotel labor contracts expired Aug. 31, local chapters of Unite Here, a major hospitality industry-focused union, voted to authorize strikes and approved walkouts until a new agreement is reached.

"People who come to Hawaii save up for months, if not years, to come on vacation and have a certain kind of experience, and I think our short-term strike gave our guests a taste of not just what it feels like when there's a labor issue, but more importantly, the value of the contributions we make every day to make our hotel successful," said Cade Watanabe, president of Unite Here Local 5, the labor union representing striking hotel workers in Honolulu.

What hotels are considering striking?

Over the Labor Day holiday weekend, more than 10,000 hotel workers went on strike in 23 hotels across eight U.S. cities.

Unite Here 2 (a union that represents over 15,000 hospitality workers in San Francisco, San Mateo County and the East and North Bay Area in California) has provided the list below of hotels where strikes are currently underway.

The specific details of each walkout usually differ depending on the specific property or group of workers taking strike action.

It's also worth noting that the details of the strike are subject to change at any time, and more strikes may also be announced in due course. The national Unite Here organization noted Monday that the strikes have been authorized and "could begin at any time in New Haven, [Connecticut], Oakland, [California] and Providence, [Rhode Island]."

The Fair Hotel website has a tool where you can put in your destination and see a list of hotels that are "at risk" of striking, as shown in the image of Honolulu below.

This is an evolving list, and it's highly recommended that you check the Fair Hotel website if you have upcoming stays in any of these areas.

If you're worried your hotel might be affected by the strikes, consider reaching out to the hotel directly to confirm what's happening and determine your options for canceling or rebooking. The hotel can also mention any arranged contingency plans that are in place for guests who do have to stay at the property.

Just note that even though strikes may be imminent, hotels are not necessarily required to inform guests of the disruptions, even if they seriously alter the overall hotel experience (i.e., no housekeeping or closed restaurants).

What if my hotel is on strike?

Hotel workers going on strike during your trip or vacation can throw a wrench into your plans. As such, there are a few things you should know about the situation.

First, while a hotel experiencing a strike might technically be open, it will likely run with an extremely scaled-back staff and bare-bones operations that will significantly impact your stay — especially at full-service resorts with multiple restaurants, beach services and the like. At the hotel, striking workers will likely be outside picketing rather than inside doing their usual day-to-day work.

Back in 2018, during a major strike at Marriott hotels around the U.S., TPG readers who stayed at striking Hawaii hotels told TPG that they experienced "terrible service," received no compensation and felt that the situation "ruined" their Hawaiian vacation. Others reported changing hotels after experiencing firsthand how derelict the service was.

Michael D'Angelo, vice president of labor relations at Hyatt, Americas, told TPG via email that "Hyatt hotels have contingency plans in place to minimize [the] impact on hotel operations related to potential strike activity."

"Hilton makes every effort to maintain a cooperative and productive relationship with the unions that represent some of our Team Members, and we remain committed to negotiating in good faith to reach fair and reasonable agreements that are beneficial to both our valued Team Members and to our hotels," a Hilton spokesperson told TPG.

The Hilton spokesperson added that the company is "fully committed to providing guests with our signature hospitality" and that its "hotels have contingency plans in place to ensure operations continue to run as smoothly as possible."

Representatives with Marriott and Accor did not respond to a request for comment before the time of publication.

Though it's not absolutely necessary, if your hotel is striking, it's highly advisable to consider rebooking at a hotel that's not in the middle of a labor dispute. This can help preserve your trip or vacation by ensuring access to all the amenities and services you'd expect from a hotel while preventing you from being accused by striking workers of crossing picket lines.

For travelers who might be affected, Unite Here has created a guide for preparing for hotel strikes :

"A strike means that the workers who would normally be cleaning your room, scrubbing your toilet, changing your sheets, cooking your food, and helping with your bags are instead picketing outside the hotel," according to the guide. "Hotels could suspend services while trying to operate with skeleton staffing, and picket lines will run outside the hotel for up to 24 hours a day. Do not eat, meet, or sleep at a hotel that's on strike."

If you booked a hotel directly, call your hotel as soon as possible and see if you can cancel your stay. Even if you booked a nonrefundable reservation, let the hotel know you've heard about the situation and would like a refund out of good faith without a cancellation fee or any penalty.

Before rebooking, research what other hotels in the area might also be on strike to avoid a similar situation.

If all else fails and it feels like your trip is falling apart, it might be time to turn to your travel insurance policy , whether booked independently, through a hotel or as part of your credit card, to determine if a hotel strike is covered through your specific policy.

Why most hotel strikes are ending — for now

While the current batch of strikes is winding down, it's impossible to say how long the threat of future strikes will loom over the U.S. travel orbit. Unite Here's local unions will hold out as long as necessary for a contract that makes sense for the employees who are "calling for higher wages, fair staffing and workloads, and the reversal of COVID-era cuts."

But, for now, the strikes are significantly less disruptive to hotel operations — save for the open-ended strike at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront — than a 2018 hotel worker strike where more than 7,700 workers across 23 U.S. Marriott-affiliated hotels from October through early December of that year went on strike.

"We will see what happens, but we wanted to make every effort to be able to call out the systemic issues that we deal with all over the place, with limited staffing and the Covid era cuts," Watanabe said. "But more importantly, we're in the business of hospitality. We want our guests to return.

"Our strikes are also about the guests, and we need our employers to respect us and respect our guests," he continued. "We're ready to do whatever it takes to win, obviously, and we'll see what comes during the coming days and months in terms of what that needs to look like."

This means that, with expired contracts and the threat of future strikes, potential hotel disruptions could pop up during the busy fall travel season. But there's still time to reach a deal before a worst-case scenario emerges.

"Our colleagues are the heart of our business, and Hyatt has a long history of cooperation with the unions that represent our employees, including Unite Here," D'Angelo said. "We remain optimistic that mutually beneficial agreements can be reached without strikes, and we look forward to continuing to negotiate fair contracts and recognize the contributions of Hyatt employees."

Hilton Honors Experiences: My VIP Formula 1 experience at the British Grand Prix

Nicky Kelvin

Editor's Note

I've always used points and miles as a tool to enjoy travel experiences that I could typically never otherwise afford to purchase. Over time, this has often meant maximizing my rewards to book first-class flights and fancy hotel rooms. But aside from staying in Waldorf Astoria hotels and booking first-class flights on Japan Airlines' newest A350-1000 aircraft , your points can also be used to book special events and exclusive experiences.

Specifically, you can use Hilton Honors Experiences to redeem your points for activities, VIP events, concerts and so much more — plus, these experiences aren't exclusively hotel-related. While some experiences can be "purchased" outright using Hilton Honors points , others are auctioned off. For the ones that require you to bid, there is an expiration time, at which point the person who bid the highest number of points will win the experience.

In July, Hilton Honors Experiences auctioned off a VIP opportunity to attend the British Grand Prix. I was incredibly privileged to be invited by Hilton to get inside access to the McLaren F1 Team VIP Experience in Silverstone to see what winning one of these auctions is really like.

You can book Hilton Honors Experiences using points

As a Hilton Honors member, you have access to an array of bookable VIP experiences on the website. In July, Hilton auctioned off a VIP weekend experience to attend the British Grand Prix 2024. This experience for two included VIP access to the race, entry to the VIP McLaren F1 Experience, access to the Pit Lane Walk, various McLaren F1 Team-hosted activities, access to Hilton's "Stay on the Grid" rooftop experience and a two-night stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Silverstone, which included breakfast.

The bid for this specific event started at 150,000 Hilton Honors points and eventually sold for 1,075,000 points. According to TPG's September 2024 valuations , Hilton Honors points are worth 0.6 cents per point, meaning we value 1,075,000 points at $6,450.

So, was this luxury experience worth it?

Hilton Honors Experiences: My experience at the British Grand Prix

Hilton has been the global hotel partner of the McLaren Formula 1 team for almost 20 years. While Hilton provides hotels for McLaren Racing around the world, this notable partnership is much more exciting for fans.

When I attended the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, I got a first look at a VIP McLaren and Hilton experience. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Silverstone, which sits right on the racetrack and is at the heart of the activities. Rooms are exactly what you would expect from this brand in the Hilton portfolio: clean, very comfortable and functional. You can expect a slightly higher-end, business travel-style hotel.

My fourth-floor room included a balcony with fabulous views of the racetrack, the pits and the starting grid.

The experience also included access to the box, which had similar race views as my balcony; plus, the VIP box also provided meals, snacks and premium drinks throughout the day.

On the night before the race, Hilton threw a huge "Stay on the Grid" rooftop bash at the hotel, which included complimentary food and drinks. There were also musical performances from U.K. artist Jess Glynne and a DJ set from Wilkinson.

my trips hilton

Other notable events throughout the night included interviews with the team's drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. It was particularly electric as the two drivers had just driven very well in the qualifying sessions, securing the third and fifth positions on the starting grid.

my trips hilton

But most importantly, much to my delight, the night also included an interview with longtime F1 and Hilton partner Paris Hilton, who mingled and hung around at the rooftop party.

my trips hilton

Since breakfast was included in this VIP package, on race day, I enjoyed a delicious morning meal on the roof of the hotel. When I commented to the waiter that the omelet was potentially the best I had ever eaten, I was told the chef preparing it in the kitchen had received two Michelin stars.

my trips hilton

Since I had VIP access to the race, thanks to Hilton Honors Experiences, I got to watch all of the race-day excitement unfold in a suite, which included drinks and food. I had a great view of the prerace entertainment happening on the Red Bull stage, including a flight display by the Red Arrows, the British Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, and a rendition of "God Save the King" by Hannah Waddingham of "Ted Lasso" fame.

Being in the VIP suite, I had the perfect spot to not only watch the race but also see celebrities crawl around the starting grid as the cars lined up.

There is nothing quite like experiencing a Grand Prix as a VIP guest. For many, enjoying this experience with this sort of exclusivity and perks would cost several thousand dollars. Therefore, being able to access unique experiences such as this one with points gives me another reason to continue earning Hilton Honors points.

Bottom line

This luxury VIP experience was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So, if you have a stash of Hilton points, using your rewards to book a dream experience could be worthwhile.

Plus, keep a close eye out for Hilton and McLaren's "Join the Team" experiences, which will take things to the next level, putting guests in a team kit and giving them access to the garage for a race weekend.
